FROM THE PUBLISHER Happy holidays, Alexandria! It's hard to believe another year has come and gone. It's time to deck the halls, jingle bell rock and... shop local! I challenge you all to shop with intention this holiday season by selecting meaningful gifts that will give back to our local community.

HOLIDAY 2021

The unique character of Alexandria has always been defined, in large part by the businesses that reside here... and I do mean, always. Be sure to read about a historical Alexandria apothecary that still makes a huge impact on our city through its museum tours and education programs on page 54. Then, dive headfirst into our 3rd Annual Shop Local Holiday Gift Guide, which begins on page 20. You'll find that several of our curated gifts this year give back through donations to select charities. It's a fact that non-profits receive greater support from local business owners, who donate significantly more to local charities than non-local owners. Bottom line: shopping local plays a huge factor in our overall satisfaction with where we live, and the best part: local goods aren't trapped on ships and deliveries will never be carelessly thrown onto your front porch or delayed! Within The Holiday Issue, you will also find more events, holiday fashion trends, information on First Night Alexandria and much, much more! Be sure to share your favorite features with us by connecting with @vipalxmag on Facebook and Instagram! We always love receiving feedback from our dedicated readers. I'd like to end with a big thank you to all of our readers, advertising partners, contributors and staff for another magical year of VIP Alexandria Magazine. Without you, the stories we shared throughout 2021 would have been lost to an unprecedented pandemic. Your support is the most generous gift we could have ever hoped for and we want you to know... the best is yet to come! Until 2022, Alexandria, have a safe and joyous holiday season!

new mom anxiety courtesy of healthy minds therapy story by shelton pland

Have you recently had a baby and are struggling with new mom anxiety? You are not alone. 85% of new moms develop some form of sadness and anxiety during the postpartum period. Hypochondria and OCD are common anxiety-related mental-health conditions that can develop. Hypochondria is defined as atypical levels of anxiety regarding one’s health or the health of loved ones, often with the unwarranted fear that one has a serious disease. This type of anxiety can trigger OCD symptoms, resulting in obsessive compulsive behaviors such as frequent doctor visits, Googling symptoms and avoiding places or situations that could pose as dangerous or unsanitary. This can become problematic for you, your family members and your baby, as children need to interact with their environments to build up their immune systems. Mothers should not be isolated for too long and should interact with environments outside of the home with their children. If this feels like something you are going through, here are two tips I provide my clients: Externalize the anxiety and OCD This is the most important step. Remind yourself that you are not anxiety and OCD. They are not parts of you that you cannot get rid of. These are external things that you have the power to dismiss. Just because you think and feel anxious does not mean that this is the reality. For example, just because you feel like the food you just washed is not clean does not mean that it is not clean. You just watched yourself clean them. This is the anxiety trying to trick you, not the reality of the situation.

Get out of the house and socialize Studies have shown that isolation can cause anxiety and paranoia. New moms often find themselves at home more than they used to be. New moms avoid going out due to stress, time and exhaustion. It is not uncommon to begin cancelling plans regularly and, before you know it, your anxiety and OCD tell you to keep staying inside because the outside world is scary, unpredictable and dirty. Make it a goal to leave your house at least once a day. It is fine to stay in the neighborhood every now and then, but really try to go outside your comfort zone as much as possible. Head to the store, the coffee shop or the park. These are just a few tips I provide new moms who come to see me due to hypochondria and/or OCD symptoms. Keep in mind that we may not be able to use these tools successfully every time we try and that is fine! Consistency is key. If we attempt to practice a little each day, eventually it will feel easier and more natural. It is also important to keep in mind that if you feel as though these symptoms are not going away or continuing to get worse despite your best efforts, it may be time to reach out for extra help. Therapy, combined with medication, is proven to be the most effective way to combat longterm anxiety. Whatever you decide, remember there is no shame in self-care!

T G N I T T SE A Q&A with Loren Yates on the dramatic, seasonal transformation of the Loft at Lena's VIP Alexandria: What gave you the inspiration to create themed experiences at the Loft at Lena’s? Loren Yates: The past couple of years with COVID have been extremely hard on everyone. We wanted to create seasonal themed experiences for our guests to enjoy since nobody was really traveling anywhere. We started with the Oasis, our tropical-themed tent out back, and then we built up here.

entire team. It’s actually done in under five days. We close the restaurant at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday as soon as the last customer leaves. There is a truck outside waiting with people to start taking everything out of the space. Everything goes, including everything behind the bar. While they are unloading, painters are entering to begin the two-day process of removing vinyl, spackling, sanding and painting before anything else can be brought in. We had teams of people all working at the same time— electricians installing chandeliers, vinyl being installed, tables and chairs being unpacked and put together. Not only does the look of the space change, but each new experience also features an exclusive menu and specialty cocktails. New logos and menus must be designed as well as signage and social media pages.

VIP: How do you approach the scene change? LY: Choosing the theme is a total collaboration between myself, my husband and son and Katie Kirby of REVOLUTION. When we decided to build out this space last December, we approached REVOLUTION with the concept of doing four seasonal theme changes over the course of a year. Just like the restaurant business, the event industry was decimated by COVID, so it turned out to be good for all of us to work together. Last year, we went with the Winter Lodge theme, so we wanted to do something completely different for this year. Ultimately, we created what we called Velvet & Rye, this kind of glamorous concept harkening back to 1920s Hollywood. We really felt that more and more people wanted to get out and wanted to dress up again. We wanted to wrap our guests in opulence and sophistication and give them a huge WOW factor when they walk in. It starts downstairs in the lobby and continues up the elevator.

VIP: Do you take any COVID precautions? LY: We have state of the art disinfection technology: Haiku fans that kill 99.99% of airborne pathogens including the virus that causes COVID-19.

VIP: How long does it take to complete the change, and how do you accomplish such a massive undertaking? LY: It is an impressive and massive undertaking by an

VIP: Is it expensive to change it so often? LY: It is expensive, but we view it more as an investment in our community and giving back to our guests that have supported us the past two years. After all, on Open Table, our guests voted us one of the Top 100 Neighborhood Gem Restaurants in the US, and we really appreciate it.

WAYS TO KICK-START YOUR WEIGHT LOSS BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS brought to you by your cbd store -alexandria words by liesel schmidt

H

ere it is… you’re staring down the barrel of 2022, and you’re thinking, “Great. Here comes the New Year’s resolution to lose weight.”

If you’re like most people, you put waaay too much pressure on your resolution, which makes it hard to actually start your ambitious weight loss goal. How much? How fast? How? And all those questions and ambiguities make you give up a few days later (if you ever get started at all). Why not change it up this year? Why not give yourself the gift of hitting your weight loss goals without having them attached to some New Year’s resolution that you have never been able to keep? Just take small, attainable steps to an achievable goal. Set your sights on a number and a date, then stick to your plan. We’ve got some tips that will make it less stressful and more doable. 28 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

HOLIDAY 2021 • 29

1

EAT BREAKFAST It’s the most important meal of the day for a reason. Eating a filling, balanced meal in the morning helps keep you from being ravenous later, which will sabotage your goals of eating healthily.

2

EAT REGULARLY Eating at regular times during the day keeps you from feeling the urge to snack. The big kicker: Studies show that it helps you burn calories more quickly. Who doesn’t want that?

3

TRIM IT OUT Incorporate TRIM into your regimen. TRIM by SunMed features a THC compound that naturally suppresses the appetite, turning off the CB1 receptor in the brain that, when activated, leads to the “munchies” and intoxication. As a result, people taking TRIM have been shown to lose as much as 18 lbs. over the course of three months, decreasing their waistline an average of three inches with an average drop in BMI of three points.

4

MOVE IT This is probably obvious, but it still bears repeating. The more you move, the more you lose. That’s not just in dedicated gym time. Your sweat session is all well and good (and we definitely applaud that), but adding ordinary movement throughout your day is also important. Use the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther away, get up from the desk and move around a few minutes every hour throughout your workday.

An oenophile since her early 20s, Katic has also worked in the food service and wine industries most of her adult life. “I had a long career in the nutrition arena, working in food policy and communications. When I was in college, I funded my tuition by working in various restaurants, country clubs and hotels in numerous capacities,” she says. “Once I acquired this useful skill set in food service and hospitality, I never completely walked away from it. The wine and food part of the business became a lifelong pursuit on a long and winding road, which landed me at 108 North Patrick Street in Old Town.” Hence the "108" in Wine Gallery 108, which also includes an art aspect that gives it a gallery-like feel. “I think this is what makes us unique,” Katic says. “I started painting unexpectedly later in my life and connected with an inner creative energy that ignited so many dreams and passions of mine. The name of the shop was chosen to feature a gallery consisting of all things artistic, including wine, food and various forms of art itself.” Personally, Katic leans toward Old World wines with depth and character. “I am a seasonal wine drinker and will choose my wines based on the situation where I am enjoying the wine. I don’t overthink it, but I do like to pair wines with food if I am eating or for a special occasion. I have a sixth sense about flavors and matching wines with the whole host of flavors one can encounter when dining.” Built around the art of wine, craft beer and gourmet foods, Wine Gallery 108 was created to showcase the beauty of handcrafted and one-of-a-kind products whose quality make them masterpieces. “Our mission is to introduce our consumers to our passion for wine and food and help them develop that passion for themselves,” says owner Lisa Katic.

For those whose interest in wine is more than just a passing fancy, the shop has a monthly wine club called Palate 108. Offering two levels of membership, the Pioneer level costs $40 per month for a red and white wine, while the Artisanal level costs $60 per month for a red and white wine paired with gourmet food items. Wine club members receive shopping discounts and access to private tasting events in the shop.

Since opening in October 2017, Wine Gallery 108 is a small space that packs quite a punch. It has a warm and inviting atmosphere that inspires people to come in and explore the unique items in stock. What makes the shop different from run-of-the-mill wine stores is, of course, the expertise of the staff and the collection of wines. “We have a special selection of high-quality wines and offer focused, personalized customer service,” says Katic. “We specialize in finding wines that are artistically made with minimal intervention in the winemaking process and our selection is well-curated with attention to classic wines that are true to their varietal character. We use our expertise to match our customers’ tastes with our curated selection of wines and gourmet foods.”

In preparation for the holidays, Katic suggests pairings for traditional dinners. “A lot of people serve things like standing rib roast for Christmas, which would pair well with a Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon or Barolo. Leg of lamb is another popular dish, which would pair well with Rhone wines like Cote du Rhone, Cabernet Franc or Chateauneuf du Pape,” says Katic. “I grew up in an Italian family, so we featured a seven fishes style meal with seafood and pasta, which would pair well with Loire Valley whites like Sancerre or Muscadet, and the pasta pairs with traditional Italian wines like Chianti or Montepulciano or reds from Piedmonte like Barolo. And New Year’s Eve would be a great time to break out the Champagne and sample a couple side by side!”

A HOLIDAY COCKTAIL RECIPE BY AMY EGGERS One of the main reasons I get so excited about the holidays is because I get to entertain. Creating an atmosphere that's welcoming, relaxing and interesting extends to your home as well as what's served in your bar and kitchen. Whether it's a small get-together for four or a party for 30, this cocktail delivers sweet, savory and bubbly. It's my take on one of my favorite classic cocktails, the French 75. My version combines the bubbles of sparkling wine with cranberry rosemary simple syrup and citrus. If you're not a fan of rosemary, you can easily omit this ingredient. Do not shy away from making your own simple syrup. It's one of the easiest and most flavorful elements you can add to your cocktail game or even to iced teas and mocktails. It's uncomplicated, yet interesting and easy to make for a crowd. Enjoy!

Cranberry Rosemary Simple Syrup (can be done in advance): 1/2 cup fresh or frozen cranberries 1/4 cup rosemary leaves 1 cup sugar 1 cup water In a medium saucepan, bring cranberries, rosemary leaves, sugar and water to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let cook for about 10 minutes, then remove from heat and let steep for about 20 minutes. Strain into vessel, leaving cranberries and rosemary leaves out. This can be refrigerated for up to one month. VIP75 RECIPE VIP Spritz 1 oz gin 1/2 oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed is best (can be done in advance) 1/2 oz cranberry rosemary simple syrup 3 oz Champagne or other sparkling wine Add gin, lemon juice and simple syrup into cocktail shaker with ice and shake until chilled Strain into a flute or coupe glass and top with Champagne Garnish with lemon twist, rosemary sprig or fresh pomegranate arils HOLIDAY 2021 • 39

Cathy Bradford words by liesel schmidt

Along with their reputation for excellent service and selection, King’s Jewelry has become synonymous with family. After beginning to work at King's Jewelry in 1962 and then buying the business in 1978, Norman “Brad” Bradford brought his daughter, Tari, to work at the store in 1983. In 1986, his wife Cathy began handling accounting and day-to-day operations along with Tari. Their two sons, Andrew and Gregory, have more recently joined the team, lending their respective expertise in purchasing inventory and social media. The family feel also extends to the employees, many of whom have been there for decades. “We all work together as a tight-knit team,” says Cathy of the staff's relationship, noting that sales are all non-commission. “Our main priority isn’t just making a sale—it’s working with our customers and providing them with jewelry that is high quality and long-lasting.” “Lasting” is something of a buzzword for King’s. It refers to the jewelry they sell, the store itself and the employees. But it also is apt when it comes to their clientele. Those are lasting relationships, often built over years from the first purchase—most notably engagement rings. “We’ll build a relationship with a customer who comes to us for an engagement ring and that trust is there for the future: wedding bands, anniversary and special occasion jewelry, heirloom baby gifts. That kind of relationship is something we strive for,” Cathy says. With so much changing over the past 66 years, King’s has naturally moved with the times in some ways, but

stayed unchanged in others. While they have an active presence on social media and online, they don’t currently sell jewelry online. “Jewelry needs to be held and admired. You need to be able to feel the weight of it, see how it’s made, admire how the facets of a diamond catch the light. That’s not something you can do online,” says Cathy. “We also try to focus on explaining the different quality aspects so the customer can make an educated choice,” adds Andrew. Along with a large selection of engagement and wedding rings in a variety of styles and sizes, King’s also carries an extensive collection of gemstone and fashion jewelry, luxury watches and estate pieces. For customers with a unique vision that falls outside of the scope of what’s in the case, they also specialize in designing custom rings. Additionally, the repair department handles expert jewelry and watch repair. As a member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, King’s Jewelry utilizes the resources that come from having such a strong network. “The Chamber has helped us build professional and personal relationships in our community, and attending Chamber meetings keeps us informed as to the constant changes in our city, which also helps to grow and improve our business,” says Cathy. King’s Jewelry is located at 609 King Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. For more information, call 703.549.0011 or visit www.KingsJewelry.NET HOLIDAY 2021 • 43

There’s so much more than meets the eye with Kristen Moore, owner of Twist Boutique. A lover of fashion from a young age, she found treasures in consignment and thrift stores that elevated her style and gave her wardrobe a notable uniqueness that caught people’s eyes. After years of working in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as the Federal Aviation Administration and later lobbying on behalf of aerospace and defense, Moore left the high stress for high fashion—with a twist. “Twist Boutique is a twist on classic American fashion, combining vintage with high to medium-end brands—as we like to say, 'Prada to Puma' and everything in between,” says Moore, who opened Twist in 2017. “In addition, we also carry a range of sizes from 00 to 3X. We want to ensure we have something for everyone. We also strive to ensure the best customer service experience for our consignors and customers. We view the relationship as Win-Win and want everyone to be well taken care of, as there is a lot of trust that goes involved with consignment between the shop and consignors." With her finger on the pulse of fashion trends, Moore has some great advice for the upcoming holiday season. “Rediscover the joy of dressing up this season and embrace the power of a transformative party look as you spend time with friends and loved ones,” she says. “Whether you have a jam-packed social calendar or you're looking to dress up for yourself, there are many styles you can incorporate with your existing wardrobe or pieces to include to complete your holiday look.”

Kristen's Holiday Fashioni Tips VIVID HUES

Add bright colors, prints and textures as you plan your holiday attire. It doesn’t take much to up the ante this season.

SATIN, SILK AND LACE

Slip dresses in satin or silk paired with a blazer, faux fur or a fur wrap are glamorous. Not into slip dresses? Wear a satin, silk or lace top under a blazer or sweater that gives color and texture to your outfit.

LEATHER

Any color will do. Pants, skirts or dresses can be paired with a sequin top or velvet (even monochromatic looks fantastic) and add statement jewelry to top it off.

METALLICS

Who doesn’t love a metallic blazer, pant, skirt or dress to stand out this season?

FAUX OR REAL FUR

Cropped faux fur over-the-shoulder wraps or jackets can complete any look, whether you’re wearing a sequin dress, jeans or leather. The texture and color add a lot of dimension to your look.

STATEMENT JEWELRY & HAIR CLIPS

Include jewelry that complements your look, whether you’re going classic or edgy. Put on either colorful beaded earrings or necklaces if you need to add or complement color, or go minimal if your pieces are bright and have a lot of texture like sequins or metallics.

EMBELLISHED SHOES

Best bets are suede embellished heels or flats and satin or brocade if you need added color and texture. Never underestimate the power of a sleek ankle boot to add to any outfit. 48• •VIP VIPALEXANDRIA ALEXANDRIAMAGAZINE MAGAZINE 48

A PERFECTLY-PRESERVED APOTHECARY IN ALEXANDRIA PROVIDES EXCITING INSIGHT TO THE OUTLANDER BOOK SERIES "Apothecary" is the historical term for a person or location that made and sold drugs and herbal remedies for medicinal purposes. Not only does Alexandria still have one, but it’s perfectly preserved and still serving the community. The Stabler-Leadbetter Apothecary was founded in Alexandria by Edward Stabler in 1792. It remained a family business until it closed its doors in 1933. Today, it stands in the very same spot and operates as a museum. As if time has stopped, the building and all of its contents are original, down to the contents of medicinal bottles. This kind of preservation provides a time capsule-like experience for visitors. It is a detailed demonstration of the role the apothecary played within both medicinal history and the community of Alexandria. 54 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

After apprenticing under his brother in Leesburg, Virginia, Edward Stabler opened the Alexandria apothecary in 1792. He first rented space near the corner of S. Fairfax and Prince Streets, but later purchased land in 1805 at 107 S. Fairfax and built the existing three story brick building that stands today. In 1829, he purchased 105 S. Fairfax and further expanded. In addition to medicine, Stabler sold farm and garden equipment, surgical and dental instruments, soap, perfume, cigars, paint supplies and toiletry items. The business was one of the most successful medicine and retail businesses in Alexandria. Ledgers on display in the museum show customers including Robert E. Lee, Martha Washington and Nelly Custis. The apothecary was a family affair. Stabler’s eldest son, William, apprenticed under his father and ultimately took over the business after Edward’s death in 1831. William’s brother-in-law, John Leadbeater, joined the business in 1844. The two kept the thriving business in operation until William’s death in 1852. The Leadbeater family continued to operate the apothecary until 1933, when it was forced into bankruptcy during the Great Depression.

Shortly after, a small group of Alexandrians bought the building at auction and turned it into a museum by 1939. Of the 20,000 items archived, items such as hand-blown glass bottles, herbal botanicals, letters, invoices and ledgers are all on display. OUTLANDER AND THE STABLER-LEADBEATER APOTHECARY: WHAT’S THE CONNECTION? Many people are familiar with the popular Outlander books, a historical fiction fantasy series by Diana Gabaldon. The stories have it all; romance, time travel, fiction, science fiction, non-fiction, mystery and more! A television series based on the books was developed in 2014, and each season largely follows each book. The main character and heroine, Claire Randall, is a 20th-century post-WWII combatnurse/midwife/healer who briefly reunites with her husband in the Scottish Highlands. One moment she is taking a casual stroll around a standing stone circle and in the next moment, she abruptly catapults back in time 200 years to the exact same spot. HOLIDAY 2021 • 55

From there, she is thrusted upon historical adventure after adventure, including evading her husband’s unsavory family lineage (think great-great-great-greatgreat-great grandfather). To save her from the grips of her patriarchal in-law, she is married off to a Scottish Klansman who becomes her mainstay love interest throughout the series.

as claire travels back and forth between her original time period and other eras throughout the series, she wields her advanced knowledge of healing and medicine, particularly the use of herbs. This storyline has positioned the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum as a natural destination for Outlander fans. “Over the years, many fans of the novels have visited the museum and made mention of the clear ties between the museum and the series,” said Lauren Gleason, program coordinator for the Office of Historic Alexandria. Seeing a great opportunity to capture audiences and celebrate the history of the apothecary, Gleason created a series of tours so visitors can tour the museum and learn more about the herbal medicines and themes mentioned in the series. The most recent “Outlandish Tour of the Apothecary Museum” was held on November 21st in honor of the release of Gabaldon’s ninth book in the Outlander series. If you missed this event, don’t despair! The museum is open for self-guided tours of the first floor or guided tours of the first and second floors. BY WAY OF HISTORY: THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN MEDICINE IN THE 18TH CENTURY Claire’s adventure in time-travel highlights the nuanced role of women in medicine during the 18th Century. 56 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

Claire’s adventure in time-travel highlights the nuanced role of women in medicine during the 18th Century. Like many examples of the infancy of professions, the early female experience is full of demonstration and experience but diminished in acknowledgement.

Like many examples of the infancy of professions, the early female experience is full of demonstration and experience but diminished in acknowledgement. While women were expected to have a high baseline knowledge of healing treatments (lavender and chamomile for sleep or ginger for upset stomachs) for their households and communities, there is hardly any evidence historians can reference because most were paid in trade instead of money. Women with more

extensive experience and knowledge were often known as midwives, not only delivering babies, but also providing medical care to women and children. Today, it would be seen more as a nurse practitioner. Like apothecaries, midwives were apprenticeship-trained. In the book and television series, characters like Claire Fraser and Mrs. Fitz could be identified as midwives or nurses.

OUTLANDISH OR ACCURATE? MYTH BUSTING THE OUTLANDER HERBAL MEDICINES Herbal medicines featured throughout the Outlander series can be found in the museum. Are they accurate? Do they even exist? Let’s take a closer look: Cascara: In the book series, cascara is used several times to “poison” adversaries. In smaller doses, it is even used to fake illness. Outlandish or Accurate? Probably more dramatic than anything. Cascara dates back to Native Americans as a laxative. In fact, up until 2002, it was an ingredient in over-the-counter drugs that treated constipation. However, because manufacturers were not compelled to address safety and effectiveness concerns of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with costly studies, it was removed from HOLIDAY 2021 • 57

over-the-counter laxative formulas. You can still find it available as a dietary supplement, but it’s not recommended for long-term use (more than a week) due to dehydration and potential liver damage. Dauco Seeds: Also known as Queen Anne’s Lace and Wild Carrot, Outlander depicts its use as birth control. Outlandish or Accurate? Although not used in the past 100 years, this is accurate. While tea made from the root has been used to prevent kidney stones, it was also used for centuries as a contraceptive (sort of a “morning after” pill). Leeches and Maggots: These tools in Claire's medical toolbox are frequently used during the series to remove blood from under the skin after an injury. Outlandish or Accurate? Squeamish and accurate. The practice goes back to Aboriginals and Native Mayan tribes. Today, it even has the blessing of the FDA. Maggots (now medical maggots) are used to remove necrotic (dead) tissue from wounds and leeches are used for a variety of purposes including blood thinning, circulation improvement and clot prevention. The apothecary sold leaches to physicians for bleeding treatments. Gallberries: Claire uses these to treat malaria, a serious parasitic disease.

Outlandish or Accurate? Potentially accurate. Today, malaria is prevented and treated with harsh medications. However, gallberries contain quinine, a chemical found in plants that have treated malaria historically. While malaria is not endemic to Virginia, it could be brought over by travelers and immigrants unknowingly. The apothecary has numerous containers that hold the bark of the tree that was a common source of quinine, which indicates it was frequently used.

What's in her bag? FEATURING MARIA ELIZABETH, OWNER OF SALON DEZEN words by liesel schmidt

SPIRAL HAIR TIES: These spiral hair ties look cute on your wrist and in your hair! Grab yours at Salon deZEN. BLINC EYELINER: This eyeliner has staying power and I keep it in my bag to transition my eyes from day to night when I’m on the go. I equally adore Blinc’s mascara as it is water-resistant with tube technology for maximum hold. Both of these are available at Salon deZEN. KM SESSION SPRAY FLEX: This hairspray is a goto finishing spray that provides light hold with eternal flexibility. This spray is made up of natural extracts that help give your hair moisture, strength, and smoothness. Travel size and full-sized product available at Salon deZEN.

BLING “DREAM” HAIR PIN: Who doesn’t love a little bling? Salon deZEN has these sparkly hair pins with a variety of words on them like, “PEACE, LOVE, HOPE” etc. You can literally wear your heart on your hair with these stylish accessories. TORCHE LUMIERE HIGHLIGHTER BY SURRATT: This is my go-to fave for that dewy, warm, glow. This “glow stick” is a richly pigmented highlighter that leaves my complexion looking radiant with a subtle shimmery glow. My color shade is “D Or” and I bought this locally at Bellacara.

KITSCH SCALP EXFOLIATOR: This is more than a brush. It is also a scalp exfoliator that you can use in the shower to stimulate the health of your scalp. However, I carry this circular brush in my purse because it is perfect for untangling my extensions and helps keep them looking their best. Get yours at Salon deZEN. KM FRESH HAIR: Dry shampoo and repeat with this dreamy spray that helps you fake a legendary blowout. The scent is intoxicating and will make you forget that you might be overdue for a wash. It soaks up excess dirt, oil, and product from the hair. This spray transforms your hair back to fresh, bouncy locks. Plus, you’ll save on your water bill. ;) Pick up yours at Salon deZEN. TRANSLUCENT HAIR STICKS: I love having these in my bag as they are a stylish and easy way to twist my hair into a messy bun with translucent hues of color. Available at Salon deZEN. HOLIDAY 2021 • 67

INNERSENSE HARMONIC HEALING OIL: This oil is everything. It can be used on your hair, scalp, face, or hands. I especially love to use it on my hands in the winter months as well as my lips for extra potent hydration. This treatment oil helps to balance hair, skin, and scalp with a fragrant lavender scent. Salon deZEN is so thrilled to now be caring the INNERSENSE line. HAUTE PROTECTION HIGH PROTECT6ION SPF 50: I’m a sunscreen advocate and this mineral cream-topowder makes my skin happy. It’s the perfect on-the-go item as it comes in a convenient compact with a mirror for easy application and reapplication through the day. I snagged mine at McLean Dermatology Center. EMBELLISHED PEARL HEADBAND: I’m obsessed with the pearl trend right now and this ivory headband goes with everything. I leave it in my bag because you never know when your hair is going to need an update during a hectic day. Find this headband and other crush-worthy accessories at Salon deZEN. H & M SUNGLASSES: Even when there is no sun, I wear sunglasses when outside. It is so important to protect your eyes from ultraviolet light . Not only do sunglasses help prevent sun damage to your eyes, but they also protect your eyes from premature wrinkles.

PEARL HAIR CLIPS: Like I said, I love the current pearl trend and these multi-strand pearl clips do not disappoint. After a long day, I like to pull my hair back and these create a romantic statement in my locks. I truly love adding accessories to my hair to embellish a look. Find lots of pearl options at Salon deZEN. PURPLE HEART STONE: I love to carry something in my bag that is healing. This heart fits perfectly in my hand and gives a cooling sensation. Purple represents spirituality, creativity, , devotion, peace, pride, independence, and magic. To me, it also represents my best friend’s Mom who passed away from pancreatic cancer. APPLE IPHONE: As with just about everyone, my bag is also a home to a smartphone. Mine is embellished with a butterfly PopSocket and Salon deZEN decals. Butterflies represent change, hope, and life. Whereas ZEN represents a calming peace within one’s self. I love blending these two symbols together.

She's Got The Look THE SUBTLE ARTISTRY OF PERMANENT MAKEUP & MICROBLADING words by liesel schmidt

Read about any of the latest beauty trends and, chances are, they started in Asia. People pay a great deal for the innovative beauty trends coming out of Asia, and Jiba Elemanova has created a business to offer those amenities to the community of Alexandria.

you’ll feel stunning without the need for all the makeup. Regardless of the beauty treatment you choose, Elemanova offers this advice: “The best way to look for [the] holiday season is to be yourself, to be at your best and be who you want to be.”

Since opening in March of 2020, DMV Beauty Clinic provides beauty treatments and services including permanent makeup, microblading, lip blushing, eyelash extensions, lash lifts and brow lamination. “Our permanent makeup and beauty clinic caters to people who value quality in beauty,” says Elemanova. “We’re unlike other spas and beauty companies in that we bring all the advances and developments in beauty from Central Asia and offer them to our clients, who leave feeling like the best version of themselves.”

Offering discounts on all treatments over the holiday season, DMV Beauty Clinic is a must for your to-do list and a great gift idea. DMV Beauty Clinic is located at 2161 Jamieson Ave, Alexandria, VA 22314. For more information, call 571.565.1467 or visit www.dmvbeautyclinic.com

With a staff highly trained by Russian professionals, the Russian-speaking company prides themselves on the quality of their services and their professionalism, as well as their attention to detail and customer service. “We are here to enhance our customers’ natural beauty and give them more confidence for their best moments,” Elemanova says. For the upcoming holiday season, popular trends include lash lifts and brow laminations. Both services enhance the eyes, making the eyelashes and eyebrows look fuller by lifting the hairs of the brows or the lashes, separating them and moving them into a preferred position. Once they look perfect, a setting serum is applied to keep them in place, giving you a polished look with killer brows and lashes that will make your eyes pop. Dear Old Town, Men's Fashion has arrived. FEATURING YELLOW JACKET BOUTIQUE words by alice swan | photography courtesy of yellow jacket

Look what’s ‘popped up’ on the Alexandria retail scene, just in time for the holidays! Successful retailer Elizabeth Todd has expanded her Hive brand into menswear, with a new store at 301 Cameron Street in Old Town Alexandria, aptly named Yellow Jacket. The move was inspired by customer requests she’d been hearing for years and her own experience shopping for the men in her life, Todd admitted. “Shopping for my son or my husband, it was so hard to find them quality jeans, or a sweater or a button-down, and hearing the same from customers there seemed to be a market for a men’s store,” Todd said. “When I had the opportunity to expand The Hive into a larger space, I thought 301 Cameron was the perfect place to try a men’s store.”

either shipped or delivered locally. Customers can even sign up to receive more boxes through the year, with the option to keep or return the items. Through December, Yellow Jacket will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 10am-6pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. You can also shop online at https:// theshoehive.com. While Todd opened Yellow Jacket quickly as a pop-up for the holiday season, she has big plans for the store in 2022. Yellow Jacket will be closed briefly in January for renovations, she explained, to make room for all the new men’s clothing items she will be bringing in for Spring and Summer. An official Grand Opening event is also being planned for Winter 2022.

Todd explained that the trend for more relaxed dressing was the buying guide for the store, which is filled with casual yet stylish clothing and accessories for men. Among the brands to be found at Yellow Jacket are AG Denim, Tasc, Johnnie-O, and other popular lines. “We want to have clothes for people’s lives, and I think men, just like women, want to look put together and good when they get dressed. That is what the store is aiming for,” she added. Yellow Jacket is also making holiday shopping easier for the special guy in your life by offering the Yellow Jacket Box service. After completing a short questionnaire in the shop or online, and providing a suggested dollar amount, the store team will create a curated gift box for you, to be HOLIDAY HOLIDAY2021 2021 • • 7373

THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME FOR CAR ENTHUSIASTS words by liesel schmidt

Since opening in 2016, Dominion Raceway & Entertainment has been the east coast’s premier destination for motorsports and entertainment, featuring three motorsports tracks, both outdoor and indoor concert venues, ten acres of retail space and a 33acre commercial center. The main 36,600 square foot complex includes a restaurant and is ideal for hosting corporate events, commercial product releases and live music.

officially open before the end of 2021. “The idea for a garage condominium has been a part of the plan for Dominion Raceway & Entertainment since it opened; and when I became a member of the Driver’s Club several years ago, I expressed an interest in helping make the garages a reality when the time was right,” says Stewart Bartley of Y-12 Investments, LLC, one of the investing partners of Dominion Lux, the newly-built structure housing the garage condominium.

In partnership with the racetrack, a garage condominium concept has been in the works since late 2018 and will

but it’s about so much more than just having a secure place to house luxury and performance cars—it’s about creating a community. “Car enthusiasts love to gather and discuss their shared passion,” Bartley explains. “Dominion Lux offers several common spaces to gather such as the Chrome Lounge, the Pit Stop service bay with a lift and the Suds Wash Bay for indoor car washing. We also hold Cars & Coffee periodically, which brings everyone together and gives them a great chance to socialize with a cup of coffee in hand.”

A perfect gift option for your car-collecting friends or family members, Dominion Racetrack & Entertainment offers several different ways to access the racetrack experience for a minimal price, from beginners to experts. Located at 6701 Dominion Garage Ave., Thornburg, VA 22580. For more information, call 703.361.7223 or visit dominionraceway.com.

While perhaps not a novel concept, Dominion Lux offers something that, until now, has not been available to the area. “The idea of a garage condominium has been successfully implemented in many other locations around the country, and it will be here,” says Bartley. “Storage space is often the limiting factor for many car collectors and enthusiasts, especially in dense urban areas where land prices are high. Our idea is to provide relatively affordable storage space adjacent to an excellent racetrack environment as well as many scenic Virginia byways. There are many opportunities to use the two-mile racetrack and there are many miles of scenic roadways throughout the neighboring counties that afford a much more relaxed driving environment for classic and highperformance cars, than does, for example, the Capitol Beltway, which is what true car enthusiasts are looking for.”
