PUBLISHER'S LETTER Welcome to The Holiday Issue, Alexandria! There is no doubt that everyone's holiday story will look a bit different this year, but we hope you find comfort within these pages. I am so proud of my team here at VIP Alexandria for curating such a beautiful holiday issue with care. It was always our hope that we would end such a difficult year on a positive note by sharing more of the inspiring stories we have become so well known for, in addition to supporting our local small businesses. Our feature story is one that is very near and dear to all of our hearts. The cancellation of The Alexandria Scottish Walk Weekend did not come as a surprise to anyone, but it was difficult to hear all the same. Alexandria's soul seems to shine a bit brighter each holiday season as the bagpipes roar to life and our community comes together to support those in need. We are so thrilled that, despite this cancellation, we were able to bring this 50-year tradition to life within this publication. We hope you enjoy exploring its history and mission, as well as learning more about Scottish holiday traditions and Alexandria's sister city in Scotland. Speaking of exploring, our Creative Director ventured out into Alexandria this month in search of the most creative cocktail and dessert pairings that our local restaurants had to offer. Her findings are included in the pages ahead, as well as delicious recipes for hosting a Hannukah dinner celebration at home. Of course, no holiday issue of VIP would be complete without pages and pages of local holiday gifts! We had such a wonderful time working with these fantastic local businesses and cannot wait to check all of their wonderful gifts off of our own, personal shopping lists this season. From fashion and custom jewelry to craft beer memberships and teas of the season, there is bound to be something for everyone! I'd like to end this month's letter with a friendly reminder to shop and dine local this holiday season -- even if that means ordering curbside or placing orders with your favorite boutiques online. Shopping local has always been such an important part of our community, but never more so than it became in 2020. As we embark into the unknown over the next several weeks, please be sure to keep our local businesses in your thoughts. After all, they are the heartbeat of our beloved Old Town. Peace and joy to you all, dear readers. Wishing you and your loved ones good health and happiness this holiday season. Until 2021, Alexandria!

the gift of boundaries Story by Dr. Eleni Boosalis of Del Ray Psych

The holidays are upon us, along with all the associated stressors—the socially distanced holiday parties, gift giving, card sending, homeschooling and cookie making—all while trying to maintain some sanity amidst a persistent pandemic. Additionally, this time of year presents us with numerous opportunities to set boundaries for ourselves and for the loved ones in our lives. This year more than ever, setting boundaries with others is imperative. In a world where we crave both safety and social connection, we are faced with the challenge of balancing both. We desire to connect with others, yet want to stay socially distant. We often look forward to seeing certain people every holiday, but this year we may experience a heightened sense of stress as the holidays approach.

This month, take inventory of who and what feeds your soul. Notice if you are feeling pressured to say “yes” to social and family gatherings. Ask yourself if you really want to go to certain events or if you are simply saying “yes” out of guilt. In order to truly practice self love and decrease stress this holiday season, notice if you are making yourself a priority or if you are putting everyone else’s needs before your own. Do you find that you avoid expressing your opinion for fear of creating conflict? Is it easier to “keep the peace” and not “rock the boat?” These are all great questions to consider as you take inventory of where to create emotional boundaries and set verbal and non-verbal expectations for what you are comfortable with. Here are five tips on how you can start setting emotional boundaries for yourself. Although it may initially seem daunting, taking small steps toward

creating these new behaviors will get easier, and they will be met with less resistance as they become your new norm.

friend’s bruised ego isn’t your responsibility. In general, if saying “no” causes a rift in a relationship, it is likely not a healthy relationship.

Five emotional boundaries you can start using right now:

5. Become comfortable with ALL your feelings. There are no negative or positive feelings. These are just labels. All feelings are important, and all feelings are informative and valuable. Anger can let you know something is wrong and a boundary is being violated. Fear can protect you

1. Make a planfor what you are comfortable with before responding to an invitation. You can buy some time by saying you will think about it. First, decide what

you are comfortable with. Second, mentally and verbally rehearse your response. Lastly, commit to executing your plan. Expect possible pushback and plan for that as well. 2.Learn that it is OK to say “no.” Sometimes the only way to say “yes” to self care is to say “no” to requests that come at you. Ask yourself why you feel inclined to readily say “yes” to requests for a zoom happy hour, outdoor play date or a work responsibility that doesn’t belong to you. Is it because this brings joy to your life or because you fear rejection? Is it because you feel energized by that group of people or because you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings? Notice if you are truly taking your needs into consideration or if you tend to put your needs last on the list. Sometimes saying “no” is the first step to making yourself a priority. Protect your time— it has value, and you can’t buy more time on Amazon. Spend it wisely—on whatever feeds your soul or that which is absolutely necessary. 3. Replenish your emotional bank account . If you cannot get out of an “obligation,” make time to replenish yourself. Make yourself a priority when you feel depleted. Replenishing could be alone time, a long bath, reading a book, dancing, taking a walk, creating, cooking, vegging on the couch or doing anything that feeds your energy and your soul. 4. Practice assertive communication.Read up about communication styles. There are generally four styles of communication. They include passive aggressive, avoidant, aggressive, or assertive communication. Assertive communication is the goal. A good way to remember assertive communication is by using the acronym HARD: honest, assertive, respectful and direct. Be honest and direct about what your expectations are in a respectful manner. Then follow through. Use “I” statements instead of “you” statements. Instead of saying, “YOU are so pushy,” you can say, “I don’t feel comfortable with that.” You are not responsible for protecting other people’s feelings by avoiding your own. As long as you are respectful in your communication, a

from poor choices. Happiness can let you know you are doing an activity that feeds your soul. Fatigue can let you know you’re depleted and need some time to replenish. Acknowledge your feelings. Don’t avoid them. If you do, they will come back to bite you. They can manifest as a back ache, a headache, anxiety, sleep issues, depression and a whole host of other symptoms. Emotions serve to inform you. They’re energy in motion, and are meant to rise and fall. Allow them to move and examine them with curiosity. This holiday season, make a commitment to protect your physical and emotional boundaries. No more saying “yes” to something you are actually feeling uncomfortable with. You are your own advocate. As cliche as it sounds, you have to love yourself first. Be kind, patient and nurturing with yourself. Peace and love come from within. Building your resources within will benefit both you and those around you. Fill your well, so that you may give from a place of abundance rather than a place of depletion. Del Ray Psych and Wellness wishes you a Happy Holiday season and most abundant New Year filled with love and hope, and growth!

VIP MAN CAVE IS PRESENTED BY

NOTHING IS TRULY DEFINED.

All things change with time. THE AKEEL L. ALI STORY Story by E. Brocky McKnight of Whiskey & Kicks

As a true believer in the Law of Attraction, when I have that gut feeling that tells me, “this person is dope,” I typically trust that instinct. This was certainly the case when I met Akeel L. Ali, AKA, Black Frontiersmen. To say this gentleman is a Renaissance man would be the understatement of the decade. He can be found partaking in anything from painting amazing portraits of prominent African-American figures—such as Sade, Harriet Tubman or Angela Davis—to cycling 100 miles on his hard-working road bike. “It just depends on the day. As you can see, I am an ‘in the moment’ kind of guy. Cycling and backcountry snowboarding are my escapes.” I was first introduced to Akeel while he was working as a DJ at a bar in his native Washington, DC—yes, he does that, too. To quote the man himself, “On any given day you can catch me grooving to some Blue Eyed Soul or Yacht Rock—I listen to anything from Ravi Shankar to The Mighty Sparrow and everything in between.” The day we met, I remember hearing J Dilla and maybe a bit of Nas, as well. Two of my absolute favorite hip hop

Artists of all time. At that moment, something told me, “you must know this human.” Upon following Black Frontiersmen on Instagram, I found out that he is also an incredible artist. As a lover of abstract art, I became an instant fan. Not only of his work, but of something inspirational inside this human being that manifested itself on the canvas.

[My uncle] Andrew was shot and killed when I was 20, and I felt he handed me the paintbrush and said ‘go.’ “[My uncle] Andrew was shot and killed when I was 20, and I felt he handed me the paintbrush and said ‘go.’ My bedroom at the time was his old room—the place where he had created for years—so I couldn’t escape his energy. [Before that] I had never even picked up a paintbrush, except in basic art classes in school.”

interruption. Now, I could go on about Akeel. From him traveling to Alaska to film the Iditarod and meeting the great explorer Col. Norman Vaughan, to him sneaking into Billie Dee Williams’ private gallery showing in Georgetown, DC—and actually forming a relationship with the man—to him working as a filmmaker on the Tribeca Film Festival featured documentary, “Time Is Illmatic,” based on the aforementioned hip hop artist Nas. Yes, I could go on. However, as I said, time and space are both limited. So, I will leave with some words from the man himself:

Filmmaker, photographer, painter, DJ, activist, cycling fanatic, snowboarder, hiker…is there anything else you’d like to share, sir? “Most people do not know that I drove a Zamboni for several years at an ice rink in Maryland.” I must buy this guy a whiskey. Here’s your key to the Man Cave, my friend! What is the concept of a man cave? It’s typically a limited amount of space where a man can be himself without

“Without art in all of its forms and mediums, the world would certainly be a much darker place. Respect artists. I didn’t ask to be an artist, it’s just who I am. The creator bestowed some skills upon me and shined the light, so I ran with it. This is how I support myself 24/7. Working artists deserve to be paid, just like any skilled professional that provides a service. All art ain’t free! Art is a lifestyle for some, a job for others and a hobby for many.” Keep pushing, brother Akeel. FIRST NIGHT ALEXANDRIA

NEW YEAR'S EVE... REIMAGINED Story by Liesel Schmidt

By all accounts, 2020 was…a lot. As a nation, we faced a health crisis unlike anything we’ve experienced in modern society; and it had a fall-out that affected everything, including social gatherings. The entire country went into lock-down, forcing us all apart and wishing for the day when we could all come back together. Fortunately, we’ve begun the recovery process; and as the last seconds of 2020 tick down to the first moments of 2021, we have great hopes that the new year will be one worthy of celebration. With that in mind, the 26th year of First Night Alexandria is a highly anticipated event, and one that the local community desperately needs. “Music and humor are therapeutic!” says Marilyn Patterson, Executive Director of First Night Alexandria, Inc. “2020 has been quite a year for everyone, and the consensus is that it’s time to

hit the reset button. FNA is an opportunity to enjoy an evening of fun favorites to dance to, sing along with, and laugh at in the new year.” A showcase of the performing and lively arts, FNA is an event that supports culture while providing an alternative to traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations that is familyfriendly and affordable. The festive event was established by First Night Alexandria, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the appreciation of cultural diversity in the performing arts. A portion of the ticket proceeds supports young musicians studying choral, band and orchestra in Alexandria city middle and high schools; and over the years, FNA has donated over $35K through the generosity of local businesses, residents and visitors who attend the event. “This is such an important way to support the arts, and we are excited

WWW.VIPALEXANDRIAMAG.COM • 13

to reach an expanding community this year and earn the opportunity to become part of their holiday tradition as we have done for so many in years past,” says Patterson. Unlike years past, however, there will be some noticeable differences. In keeping with the new health mandates surrounding gatherings and the need for social distancing, the celebration will be held at 5001 Eisenhower Avenue in the West End of Alexandria (formerly known as the Victory Center). Themed “A Night of Nostalgia,” this year’s event will also feature a new drive-in destination and a virtual entertainment experience—perfect for all those who want to get in on the fun from the safety of their homes. “We needed a way to produce the celebration in a way that enables families and friends to gather together safely, either virtually or in the socially distanced drive-in venue,” Patterson explains of the changes. Two shows will premier during the event, first at 6:30 p.m. and then at 9:30 p.m., both on the Big Screen at the drivein and streamed virtually. Performances include concerts by the Earth Wind & Fire Tribute Band as they cover the hits of the iconic group; vintage rock & roll and rockabilly favorites presented by Rock-A-Sonics; top 40s favorites covered by the high energy dance band JukeBoxx; and rock, pop and R&B hits presented by local star JWX: The Jarreau Williams Experience. Rounding out the night with some laughter, the comedy troupe Clean AF Comedy will perform family-friendly routines that everyone can appreciate.

“Great anticipation surrounding this year’s holiday tradition has already begun, and we expect an overwhelming response to the drive-in and virtual concerts,” says Patterson. That said, the drive-in concert will be a premium event with a limited capacity as a result of the governor’s orders for outdoor gatherings. Each of the two shows will be restricted to approximately 100 cars, though anyone can log in online to enjoy the streaming experience. In-Person General Admission tickets (per vehicle) are $60 or $75 for VIP tickets; access to the streaming performance costs $20 per link. Unfortunately, the order of the Governor of Virginia concerning large crowd gatherings and Public Safety will not allow FNA to host a live fireworks display over the Potomac River. In continuing the long-held tradition of the celebration, however, there will be a grand finale fireworks display set to music at the end of the show. “Despite the changes, we’ve created a spectacular event,” says Patterson. “It’s family-friendly, safe and affordable, with diverse entertainment options that include popular fan-favorite entertainers and comedic acts. This year, we will expand our reach virtually and bring an entertainment experience that no one will want to miss.” For more information on ticket sales, sponsorship, donation, and volunteer opportunities, visit http://www. firstnightalexandria.org/. Missed the show or want to see it again? Log on January 1 to 31, 2021, to stream FNA on demand on your smart devices.

The First Night Alexandria Board of Directors & everyone at VIP Alexandria Magazine would like to extend a very special thank you to the Presenting Sponsors. Without their generous donations, this annual event would be in jeopardy, especially this year.

Keeping the Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk Alive... EVEN IF ONLY IN PRINT Story by Len Likas

Alexandria is home to a very special annual tradition. On the first Saturday of December for the past 50 years, the Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk has brought people together with a festive family-focused parade across the heart of Old Town. Cheerful folks of all ages coming from far and wide make their way street side to take part in the merriment and good tidings that come only once a year. Feelings of warmth and goodwill toward our fellow man quickly dispel the sometimes frigid weather. For many, the Christmas Walk has become the perfect tradition to start the holiday season and honor the city’s great Scottish heritage. Of course, you don’t need to be of Scottish, Irish, Welsh, or English descent to enjoy yourself here – All are welcome. So don your warmest wool sweater and don’t forget the knit hat because this is a winter parade and you’re really going to savor that thermos of hot cocoa. The air is brisk as early daylight streaks in over adjacent rooflines and past brick facades. The sidewalks are teeming with people and the excitement and expectation are palpable. Then all at once you hear it: the rousing melody and harmonic drone of dozens of bagpipes playing in unison with cracking snares and bass drum beating a steady thump. The stately Scottish military-styled band makes its way down the block, echoing through the streets as it goes. They’re followed by a steady stream of authentically dressed historical reenactment groups, Scottish clans, fife and drum corps, Scottish and Irish dance schools, and assorted color guards. Fire engines come roaring past. You’ll see more Scottish terriers wearing Christmas sweaters than you ever thought possible. Oldetyme English cars putter along with amusing sounding horns and the occasional comic backfire. Local politicians

"For many of us Alexandrians, the Scottish Walk ushers in the holiday season. It’s become a tradition for us all, something we all look forward to. It is a time for us to get together for a good cause, while celebrating our city’s rich history and beauty during the holidays." - Kaitlyn Likas

toss out heaps of penny candy for the kids. Even esteemed dignitaries from far afield are known to fly in for the occasion, notably none other than Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus themselves! And who would’ve known Santa could play the bagpipes? Though it’s quite the spectacle today, the parade has quite humble roots. The Walk was established in 1969 by the St. Andrew’s Society of Greater Washington, D.C., when a lone piper led a congregation to the Old Presbyterian Meeting House to lay a wreath in honor of the original group’s founder, William Hunter. Today, the Walk is an immensely popular annual institution in the city as well as a valuable fundraiser for charity. The weekend draws in more than just Old Towners, too. One parade regular, Ralph Wallace of Clan Wallace and the ScottishAmerican Military Society confirms “I know folks that come to this event from around the world, and as they are able, choose to return time and again because of the camaraderie.” It’s not uncommon to see pipe bands from

as far away as upstate New York and Pennsylvania make the pilgrimage to this legendary event. One pipe band in particular plays a key role in the proceedings: City of Alexandria Pipes & Drums, led by a true virtuoso of the instrument, Pipe Major John Sprague. Every year, City of Alexandria Pipes & Drums formally opens the parade with a grand display of pomp and circumstance. Clad in blazing scarlet Cameron tartans and topped with traditional Scottish military bearskin caps, the band marches in perfect unison through the streets to the powerful sound of perfectly tuned instruments and precise playing. Tunes typically include favorite marching standards like “Highland Laddie,” “Green Hills of Tyrol,” and the requisite “Scotland the Brave.” And lest we forget the bagpipe renditions of traditional Christmas carols that are always a crowd highlight. Former City of Alexandria Pipes & Drums member Ben Williams has been attending the Walk since 1973. A retired high school history teacher, Williams remains

a local fixture in Celtic folk music and living history reenactment circles. He’s marshalled a steady stream of students dressed in traditional Scottish garb to the parade over the years, either as part of the school pipe band he founded but more often serving as color guard for the Celtic Society of Southern Maryland and Clan MacFarlane. Williams reminisces about those parade days fondly: “Come 10:30am and everywhere, I mean everywhere, it’s all kilts – people parking, getting out of cars –everyone’s wearing a kilt! After the massed bands at the end of the parade we’d set up a concert in Market Square with folk instruments and Scottish country dancing. We’d get a crowd going and encourage the public to join in. It was a lot of fun.” Williams also seems to recall two sisters when they were very young, both promising Scottish Highland dancers, who danced with the group as they made their way along the parade route. Featured on the cover of this issue are two lovely young Alexandria ladies with a true passion for Celtic music and dancing, Jessica and Kaitlyn Likas. Both began dance lessons at a young age, starting with traditional Scottish Highland dancing. At the time, Scottish dancing was the closest they could get to the Irish step dancing their

musical ornamentation and flourishes that mark the Irish style, and make it distinct from the precise snap and measured style that marks fine Scottish fiddling. Kaitlyn has shared stages with countless notable musicians, played the Kennedy Center, and even fiddled on tour in Ireland. Alexandria locals can often catch Kaitlyn sitting in on sessions at pubs like Murphy’s and O’Connell’s. The Likas sisters have been participants in Alexandria’s Scottish Christmas Walk since the mid-1990s and both have been residents of Old Town for the last decade. “We’ve participated in the Christmas Walk for nearly 30 years, ever since we moved to the DMV area,” says Jessica. “It’s an annual tradition for our family. We like to support the local community. Cultural events like this that bring people together are a great way to do that. So many people come together from all around the region. No matter what your heritage, it’s like a really big extended family on parade day.” In Kaitlyn’s view, “For many of us Alexandrians, the Scottish Walk ushers in the holiday season. It’s become a tradition for us all, something we all look forward to. It is a time for us to get together for a good cause, while celebrating our city’s rich history and beauty during the holidays. I like to stop at the Heather and Greens sale run by the Campagna Center before the Scottish Walk weekend. I always buy some heather to decorate my home. It’s so symbolic of Scottish culture, and it’s hard to come by in this area.”

mother, Margaret, had learned as a young girl in Boston after emigrating with her parents from Ireland. They each found success in Scottish dance, competing at Celtic festivals and Highland games across the country before entering a prominent school of Irish step dancing. All the while, the sisters studied the violin in school, but it was Kaitlyn who took her love of Celtic music one step further. She began chasing her passion for traditional Irish fiddling and hasn’t looked back since. Her richly emotive and dynamic fiddle playing is adorned with the delicate

Kaitlyn continues: “Currently, I’m serving as the Public Relations Coordinator for the Ballyshaners organization. ‘Ballyshaners’ means ‘Old Towners’ in the Irish language.” This group of proud Alexandrians with Celtic roots is a mainstay at the Christmas Walk. They also help organize the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Alexandria. “For the past few years, I’ve hosted the Ballyshaners along with other friends and family for a breakfast at my place in Old Town before the Christmas Walk. All the members bring something to share. Authentic Scottish breakfast fare is served. Impromptu Celtic jam sessions break out

But the Christmas Walk on Saturday morning is not the only great event during this weekend. Everything kicks off with the sponsored benefit event Taste of Scotland on Friday – an expertly curated tasting of some of the finest Scotch spirits and ales. And we can’t forget the utterly charming Holiday Homes Tour, a guided walk through historic Old Town properties beautifully appointed with festive holiday decorations designed by acclaimed interior designers and florists. Charming events like these go a long way helping maintain the city’s longstanding reputation as a rich cultural and historical cache. It’s no wonder that Alexandria was recently recognized by Southern Living Magazine as “the perfect southern town for a Hallmark Christmas movie!” With such quaint and picturesque settings, elegant dining and shopping options, and exciting culture on offer, it’s easy to see why.

and lots of shenanigans. It’s been a great way for all of us to warm-up and get energized before the big, brisk walk through Old Town. I can’t think of a Walk when it wasn’t bone-chilling cold.” Indeed, held in the first weeks of December, the Walk can test the will of parade goers with gusty winds and even snowflakes. “With our Irish coffees to keep us warm we’d all meet up at the parade staging area, rain or shine,” Jessica reminisces. Along the parade route families huddle under tartan blankets, angora and corded wool sweaters abound, as do the traditional Scottish kilts woven in the many clan tartans of unique and colorful plaid patterns that help lend Scottish culture such distinct charm. ‘Tis true – Scots and Celts in general are known to place a high value on their long-standing traditions. One Christmas tradition well known in Scotland is wassailing. You may be familiar with the term from the Christmas carol ‘Here We Come A-wassailing,’ and that’s a big clue about the meaning of this unusual sounding word: wassailing means caroling. The Ballyshaners in particular are well known for singing Christmas carols as they walk the parade route, spreading good cheer to all as they go. Ralph Wallace and his troop love “Getting the separate sides of the street competing back and forth on who can say ‘Ho, Ho, Ho!’ the loudest, then closing it with a loud ‘Merry Christmas!’”

Did you know Alexandria has a sister city? Surely in a nod to the Scottish origin of its founders, Alexandria has paired up with Dundee, Scotland in the sister cities program to promote mutual appreciation and encourage tourism and commerce. Situated on the north bank of the effluent Firth of Tay, Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city and home to just under 150,000 inhabitants. It’s got a whole lot to offer in the way of culture. So much so that The Wall Street Journal placed it at number five on its ‘Worldwide Hot Destinations’ list and GQ named it the ‘Coolest Little City in Britain.’ When we finally overcome our current viral malaise, Alexandrians with a penchant for all things Scottish may consider a visit to this outstanding destination. Unfortunately but probably not unexpected given the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic afflicting us, the 50th anniversary of Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk has been cancelled in 2020. Considering the weekend’s events serve as the cornerstone of the Campagna Center’s annual fundraising efforts, this was a difficult but necessary decision based on public safety. Founded in 1991, the Campagna Center is a non-profit community outreach organization that sprouted from the independent Alexandria YMCA and YWCA. The organization provides critical social services in the city. “Many people don’t know that the Campagna Center is the official host of the parade,” says Jessica Likas. “The proceeds of the weekend’s festivities are their largest fundraiser of the year, generating around a quarter of a million dollars which directly benefits Alexandrians in need.” Through this time of challenges we will look forward to better times ahead and be grateful for our blessings – blessings of health, the health of our families and friends, the health of our communities and our nation. We will remember those who we’ve lost. The spirit of the season is giving. Please give to your local charities or volunteer and help those less fortunate than you. Seasons blessings to you and yours from the staff at VIP Alexandria.

Avoid Gaining 5 Pounds This Holiday Season W/ KRISTEN'S 12 DAYS OF WELLNESS Story by Kristen Coffield of The Culinary Cure

The average American packs on five to seven pounds over the holidays, and most of us will hang on to at least one of those pounds for the foreseeable future. That is in an average year! 2020 might be a year for the record books! YIKES! Instead of dealing with those pounds as New Year's resolutions, start now with 12 days of wellness and avoid the weight gain altogether. It is easy to avoid the holiday tsunami of calories in sugar, sodium, refined carbohydrates, and processed fats with smarter habits that serve us better. I love simple swaps that seamlessly make our lives healthier and our waistlines happier. In other words, we can actually have a little bit of cake and eat it too! December is the sweetest month of the year. Treats show up everywhere; and quarantine has inspired even the worst cooks and bakers to double down on their culinary offerings. Which means December is a neverending month of bad calories. Not only do all those

calories pile on the pounds, they significantly contribute to inflammation -- and inflammation is linked to every horrible lifestyle disease we want to avoid. In the spirit of making the 2020 holiday season fun in spite all the COVID-19 restrictions and global insanity, here are twelve tips that can actually help you lose weight and feel great.

it as fat. Artificial sweeteners are worse for us than refined sugar. They skew our ability to taste natural sweetness, interfere with our digestive system's functioning, and create inflammation in the body. I lump Stevia in here because it is super-sweet, and the more we eat or drink sweet, the more we crave it!

You can simply adopt one tip and stick with it or add a daily tip and make it more of a mini detox. Either way, adopting any or all, turning these tips into habits will serve you well over the holidays -- and be a gift that keeps on giving all year long. 1. Drink before you drink. Hydration is key to staying healthy over the holidays. Dehydration is linked to overeating, over-drinking, and horrible hangovers. Proper hydration means consuming 8-10oz of water an hour for 10 hours each day. At a minimum, drink one glass of water for every caffeinated and alcoholic beverage consumed. Staying hydrated is a significant health habit.

5. Drink cleaner wines. The average mass-produced bottle of wine can contain up to 16 grams of added sugar. Grapes are on the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list -meaning they are grown with excessive amounts of pesticides, fungicides, and chemical fertilizers. All that ends up in our glass of wine. Wine can also contain any of 250 FDA approved additives, including sulfites and added sugar. We can still enjoy wine if we choose wine better for us and better for the planet—more information at The Culinary Cure.

2. Drink Less Sugar. Sugar is the most addictive substance on the planet. Skip that gingerbread latte and have an espresso instead. Steer clear of fancy holiday drinks that are just sugar bombs; we do not need that pumpkin spiced hot chocolate or sugarplum cosmopolitan. Added sugar triggers sweet cravings, testing our willpower and making it harder to navigate the holiday barrage of sugary treats. 3. Sip Sparkling Wine. Champagne and sparkling wine have fewer calories per ounce than wine, beer, and cocktails. Champagne is packed with health-boosting polyphenols – antioxidants found in the 2 red grapes commonly used to make champagne. Antioxidants have a beneficial effect on the walls of blood vessels, helping to lower blood pressure and prevent heart problems. Moderate consumption of champagne has also been linked to improved cognitive function. Cheers to that! 4. Avoid Artificial Sweeteners. Nothing is worse for gut health than artificial sweeteners. They signal your body to extract more calories from the food you eat and store

6. Eat fiber, fat, and protein before safe social holiday gatherings or Zoom happy hours. The only thing worse than being a thirsty drinker is the untamed snacking it can trigger. Avoid the risk of calorie-overload by pre-gaming with healthy snacks. A handful of raw nuts, an apple, or nut milk yogurt can fill us up enough to prevent binging on 2000 calories of cheese or a dozen holiday cookies. 7. Add more fiber to your diet. Fiber helps us feel fuller longer and improves gut function. One of the easiest ways to add more fiber to our diet is with ground raw flax seed. Simply add 2 heaping teaspoons to a glass of water in the morning and evening. I love this simple trick -- it has so many benefits. Flax seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, controlling both blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Staying fuller longer helps us make better holiday food choices too! 8. Chew your food. Chew every single bite 20 times to avoid over-eating and improve digestion. Holiday foods are notorious for being fatty, salty, and sweet. Slow down and enjoy them. This will minimize over-eating, maximize flavor enjoyment, and increase nutrient absorption. 9. Stop eating when you are 80% full. Once you create the habit of chewing your food 20 times, it becomes easier to detect when you are about 80% satiated. Stopping at 80% means less unnecessary calorie consumption, and it gives our bodies time to register fullness. 10. Don't skip meals. It can be tempting to skip a meal when there is a special indulgence on the agenda. The worst possible situation is to face the cookies with low blood sugar and a ravenous appetite. Skipping meals sets us up for failure and justifies a lack of self-control. Instead, practice proper hydration and use fiber, healthy fat, and protein as your superpowers for indulging in moderation. 11. Rehydrate before going to bed. Have one last glass of water or herbal tea before bed. Eating fatty, sugary, and salty foods and sipping alcohol is hard on our bodies. Before you turn out the lights, drink another glass of water and have one handy in case you wake up thirsty in the night. Your body will thank you in the morning. 12. Eat the cake. …, or the crab dip, or whatever it is that makes you happy. Moderation, not restriction, is the key to creating better habits. By practicing the eleven habits above, you make space to enjoy your favorite indulgences and savor them in a manageable way. No, you cannot eat the cake every day until it's gone; but you can enjoy a piece and make peace with yourself when you do. Then it's time to have a glass of water and get back on track! LET'S ROW! Story by Jeanette Wages Photography Courtesty of Row House - Old Town Alexandria

Sometimes finding the urge to work out can be draining. When you are going it alone at a gym, it can be easy to stop at 20 minutes when you promised yourself you would make it to 45. At The Row House, Old Town Alexandria, working out feels a little different. In this fitness studio, rowing machines are set up 10 feet or more apart, each station has its own equipment—because sharing isn’t caring, these days—and 45 minutes whip by in a flash. After you’re finished, you realize you actually had fun and did something good for your body. “Row House has brought the workout to life with a fun atmosphere. People always say erging is a slog when it's just you on the machine trying to pull out some cardio. When you're in a room with 10 people, all in swing, lights low, music blasting and a coach motivating you, the tone changes and suddenly 45 minutes go by in a flash,” says manager Cynthia Svendsen The benefits of rowing—on the water or on a machine— are astronomical. It is a true, full body workout, incorporating both upper and lower body, as well as cardio and endurance benefits, with little or no impact

for those who cannot handle weight bearing activities. At The Row House, they take it up a notch by breaking up your rowing time with some off-machine activities, including stretches and other strength building exercises, with the option to modify the workout for your body. Making sure everyone feels comfortable, welcome and like they are doing what is right for their body, there are workouts for every fitness level—from experienced rowers to people who have been stuck at a desk—or on their couch—since March. Rowing becomes a group activity where you can work at your own pace. For those looking for fun and unique holiday party ideas or team building events, The Row House will be renting out space for private parties of up to 10 people, with snacks and drinks provided after the session. Row for a Cause is also a fun way to raise money this season and all year long, with donation based classes where proceeds go to the charity chosen for each event. If you’re kickstarting your new years resolutions, or if you have a friend looking to start theirs, gift cards and memberships are also available. Catch. Push. Pull. Let’s Row!

Relieve Holiday Anxiety w/ CBD Story by Jeanette Wages Photography by Your CBD Store - Alexandria

32 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

The holiday season can bring joy and excitement, but it can also bring stress and anxiety. For some, this time of year is a reminder of those who are no longer with us, family arguments that never seem to go away, stress over finances or seasonal affective disorder (SAD) from the darker days. This year, even more anxiety is brought on from feelings of isolation or uncertainty over the future. There is no reason to suck it up and suffer through without help!

even more problems with fatigue. Managing sleep schedules and making sure you get an adequate amount of sleep helps mitigate symptoms of SAD and holiday depression. CBD can have a calming effect, allowing one to turn their mind off and get adequate sleep. Full or Broad Spectrum CBN+ Tincture helps calm your mind and body to drift off into a peaceful sleep.

Meditate for Zen:

Taking the time to be mindful and taking time for selfcare are important year round, but especially during the holiday season when life can be focused on gift giving and entertaining. Finding your routine and putting time in your schedule to focus on relaxation can be a sanity saver. CBD can be a very effective tool in helping one stay focused while engaging in relaxation techniques— such as meditation, yoga or exercise. Try adding Simple Honey 100mg to your pre-zen tea and kick start your balance.

Time to Celebrate

The Holiday Blues

Holiday depression is considered situational depression. Social anxiety, lack of enjoyment of holiday activities, difficulties sleeping, trouble with focusing and feelings of apathy are all common symptoms of holiday depression. Studies show CBD can help with some of the more severe symptoms by working with the body’s human endocannabinoid system (ECS) by managing blood flow to parts of the brain associated with these conditions. Broad Spectrum Water Soluble 30 mg/ml Neuro can be added to your beverage daily to help you get back to feeling like yourself.

CBD can also help bring joy to your holiday parties. When attending holiday events, CBD can be invaluable in helping one stay calm while attending stressful holiday parties. Also, adding CBD to an alcoholic drink or consuming a CBD-infused beverage in lieu of a cocktail can prevent one from consuming too much alcohol. Furthermore, anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that consuming CBD with alcohol can reduce hangovers! Full Spectrum Cinnamon 500 can help spice up your holiday cocktail or mocktail—there are also a variety of other flavors for you to try!

Don’t Forget the Pets

With more people in the house and more commotion, pets can easily get stressed, too. Bacon and cheese strips for your dogs and cat treats for your cats will keep your fur family happy and carefree, while enjoying quality time with your human loved ones.

Sleep and Seasonal Affective Disorder

RECIPES

Hosting Hanukkah Dinner If you are going to host a Hanukkah Dinner, the first thing you need to know is that Hanukkah is a family affair. It’s an opportunity to come together, share food, and celebrate blessings, while passing on and creating new traditions. During the eight days of Hanukkah, communal meals are shared as family and friends reconcile their differences of the year past. The Festival of Lights is a testament to the long-lasting light that came from such a small amount of oil. Those candles burned for eight straight days, which is why most traditional Hanukkah dishes are fried in oil. These recipes, fried or not, are all a sentiment to the miracle that took place during the rededication of the Holy Temple of Jerusalem.

POTATO LATKES 32 MINUTES

2 cups peeled and shredded potatoes • 1 tablespoon grated onion • 3 eggs, beaten • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 ½ teaspoons salt • ½ cup peanut oil for frying

Place the potatoes in a cheesecloth and wring, extracting as much moisture as possible. In a medium bowl stir the potatoes, onion, eggs, flour and salt together. In a large heavy-bottomed skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat the oil until hot. Place large spoonfuls of the potato mixture into the hot oil, pressing down on them to form 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick patties. Brown on one side, turn and brown on the other. Let drain on paper towels. Serve hot. Makes 12.

Though Manischewitz is the traditional drink of choice for a Hanukkah celebration, many prefer a crisp, kosher wine wine to start the evening off right!

SUFGANIYOT 45 MINUTES

2 tablespoons active dry yeast • 1/2 cup warm water (100 degrees to 110 degrees) • 1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar, plus more for rolling • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting • 2 large eggs • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 2 teaspoons salt • 3 cups vegetable oil, plus more for bowl • 1 cup seedless raspberry jam

In a small bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Set aside until foamy, about 10 minutes. Place flour in a large bowl. Make a well in the center; add eggs, yeast mixture, 1/4 cup sugar, butter, nutmeg, and salt. Using a wooden spoon, stir until a sticky dough forms. On a well-floured work surface, knead until dough is smooth, soft, and bounces back when poked with a finger, about 8 minutes (add more flour, if necessary). Place in an oiled bowl; cover with plastic wrap. Set in a warm place to rise until doubled, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. On a lightly floured work surface, roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a 2 1/2-inch-round cutter or drinking glass, cut 20 rounds. Cover with plastic wrap; let rise 15 minutes. In medium saucepan over medium heat, heat oil until a deep-frying thermometer registers 370 degrees. Using a slotted spoon, carefully slip 4 rounds into oil. Fry until golden, about 40 seconds. Turn doughnuts over; fry until golden on other side, another 40 seconds. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to a papertowel-lined baking sheet. Roll in sugar while warm. Fry all dough, and roll in sugar. Fill a pastry bag fitted with a #4 tip with jam. Using a wooden skewer or toothpick, make a hole in the side of each doughnut. Fit the pastry tip into a hole, pipe about 2 teaspoons jam into doughnut. Repeat with remaining doughnuts. MAKES 12.

L O CA L H O L I D AY CO C KTA I L + D E S S E R T PA I R I N G S Story & Photography by Jeanette Wages

‘Tis the season to be indulgent. Yes, New Year’s Resolutions are around the corner, but this is the time of year to enjoy life and be festive. Celebrate with a little decadence, courtesy of our favorite local restaurants!

1. Smoked Cinnamon Old Fashioned + Bourbon Pecan Pie

apple brandy, vanilla, bitters and a spiced pumpkin cream foam. So much pumpkin, so far from basic.

VOLA’S DOCKSIDE GRILL AND HI-TIDE LOUNGE

4. Caramel Apple Mulled Wine + Nutella Swirled Pumpkin Cheesecake

The smoked-cinnamon old fashioned with delicious tiki bitters gives you the warm feeling of the holidays while letting us pretend we are on a beach somewhere. This drink pairs perfectly with Vola’s somewhat non-traditional bourbon pecan pie. Don’t mind me humming, “All I Want for Christmas Is a Real Good Tan” while sipping this delicious beverage.

2. Naughty or Nice Martini + Thin Mint Ice Cream Pie MASON SOCIAL

Who doesn’t want ice cream pie all year round? It’s cozy enough inside Mason Social to savor every bite of their Thin Mint ice cream pie—with crushed candy canes for that truly festive feel. If you are feeling even the tiniest bit naughty, the “Naughty or Nice” martini—vodka, Baileys, chocolate sauce, peppermint schnapps and a candy cane—will put you right in the spirit. Just enough childhood reminiscence in a drink that’s definitely for adults only.

3. Where's My Head + Muscavado Spice Cake BASTILLE

Let’s face it, the French have always known how to do desserts right—and Bastille is the place to find them! We ordered a pairing of the roulade de noisettes à la citrouille and muscavado spice cake alongside a “Where’s My Head,” a magical drink creation with a clove infused

HOPS N SHINE

Sit me by the fire-pit with these treats and I’ll forget it’s cold outside. Nutella swirled pumpkin cheesecake? I didn’t have to read past “Nutella” to know I needed this dessert in my life—and I wasn’t wrong. Pair with a caramel apple mulled wine, that I’m told will knock your socks off and warm your soul—there’s whiskey in it, so I’ll believe it’s true.

5. Tis The Season + Apple & Ricotta Donuts VIRTUE FEED & GRAIN

‘Tis the Season—yes, I’m using the cliché twice, but it’s only because it’s the name of this cocktail, which uses local MurLarkey cinnamon whiskey, amaretto and a hint of house-made sour mix. Pair this up with the apple and ricotta donut and you’re sure to have a better day.

6. Scotchtail + Chocolate Peanut Butter Bacon Bar KING & RYE

If you are a fan of sweet and salty, this is the dessert for you—chocolate and peanut butter topped with bacon… what else could you possibly need in life? Paired with the house scotchtail, which is featured in the Old Town Business Association’s “LaPhroaig Shop, Stroll and Sip” event, which will run until December 18th. Side bonus: the amazing winter wonderland igloo set up in the courtyard!

Story by Jeanette Wages Photography by Charles Butler, Union 206 Studio

When passing by Augie’s Mussel House on most evenings, you will hear the sound of Mike Richards on the guitar, singing songs we all know and love. Most would never guess that he started out in music as a shy kid, recording in his room without an audience. Growing up, Mike recalls how all he would ask for Christmas every year were stacks of blank cassette tapes to record songs on. Around the age of 14, his friend asked for some help singing “Hotel California,” as well as having Mike play the guitar on stage with him—this was his first taste of performing for others. From there, he and his friends began busking on King Street as a way of spreading their art and making some extra money until he turned 18. This led to his life as a full time singer-songwriter and performer.

While we normally see Mike performing solo with his guitar, he also plays the bass, violin, piano, clarinet, saxophone, harmonica, drums and a mean kazoo. He says his musical style has been heavily influenced by John Mayer and Incubus—a singer and a band not commonly put together in the same sentence. You can find Mike playing in Old Town most nights, but he is also available for private parties. Coming up next is the release of his new single, “Love Drunk,” from his album “XYO.”Personally, I have a love for “When You Sing,” which is a song he wrote specifically about his hometown of Alexandria. Next time you see him, make a request with a shot of Jameson! To know when and where Mike will be playing or to book him for a private event, visit www.ANoteTwoSelf.com
