Research is the strength of UWS ‘The strength of this University is in its research, being a mechanism for engagement with the region. The University continues to analyse the real issues of real people, enhancing the social equity advocacy of Western Sydney that I initiated. I specified that the goal of this concept was not equality of incomes, but greater equality of services. I am very proud to have a longstanding association with the University of Western Sydney.’

Hon E.G. Whitlam AC QC Australian Prime Minister from 5 December 1972 to 11 November 1975, Gough Whitlam AC QC has maintained strong ties with the people of Western Sydney. INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SUCCESS

Aaron McKie CEO, Hungry Jack’s Australia Master of Commerce (Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations) “Having a qualification with a major in human resources is definitely guiding the steps that I’m taking in the business. Having the opportunity to associate with international students brought out a lot of different perspectives and points of view, so it really helped me become a lot more commercial. I’ve still got notes from the downtime conversations. I’ve used some of the students’ ideas, especially with certain programs within the business.

Have you ever imagined yourself as the Chief Executive of Hungry Jacks Australia? Perhaps you have dreamt of being a radio and television presenter on a major network or earning an Order of Australia for your services to the community and making a difference in the lives of others?

“I always knew I had the capacity and skill [to lead the business], but it was good to align it through the academic work I was doing. It was quite reassuring on a weekly basis to know that what I was doing was right.”

UWS graduates have achieved this success. As you read each success story, imagine yourself in their shoes. Think about your own career possibilities and all you could achieve with your UWS degree of success. Remember, success is making your mark!

They have provided the opportunity to develop skills to enable me to be more effective in my role. Their commitment has engendered in me a love of learning for which I will always be grateful. David Elliott MP Member of Parliament for Baulkham Hills Bachelor of Arts “Growing up in Bankstown, university wasn’t necessarily an option for a lot of people in that demographic. For me to be able to sit for the regional entrance test because I lived in Western Sydney was a wonderful opportunity. My fouryear degree was fantastic preparation for my professional life, which has taken me from Duntroon, to peacekeeping as an Australian Army officer, to chief executive of a multi-million dollar organisation to being a Member of Parliament. I doubt very much whether I would have been in a position to undertake roles in business and in the community if I hadn’t got that headstart from UWS.”

Paul Murray Radio and TV presenter (Mornings on 2UE Radio and host of Paul Murray Live on Sky News Australia) Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) “My girlfriend and her wonderfully inspiring mum convinced me to go to a UWS Open Day. By the end of the afternoon, I was in love with the campus and intrigued by the course. My years at UWS, the people I learnt from and the students I learnt with brought, without doubt, the turning point in my life. The course broadened every possible horizon and informed my way of thinking about virtually everything to this day.”

Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment

Growing more food and fibre for an expanding population is a major challenge for Australia as we face a changing climate and competition for land and water resources. The Hawkesbury Institute’s team of scientists are meeting this challenge by discovering how crops, grasslands and forests and the animals that live in them are responding to environmental and land use change.

êêêêê

Equipped with leading-edge field and laboratory facilities, the Hawkesbury Institute is the ideal environment for research on our managed and natural ecosystems. For example, an ‘ecological time machine’ that uses a gigantic structure over an intact mature forest ecosystem is providing a look into a future, high CO2 world. This EucFACE experiment allows scientists to study the response to high CO2 of the entire forest ecosystem, from microscopic soil bacteria to tall trees and the insects that live in them. Research at the Hawkesbury Institute is having a global impact and our scientists are renowned for their work in ecology, forestry, and plant, animal and soil sciences. The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation ranked the Institute’s research well above world standard (highest possible score of 5) in Plant Biology and Forestry, and above world standard (score of 4) in Soil Sciences and Ecology. Other programs BACHELOR OF MEDICINE/ BACHELOR OF SURGERY Students with an interest in completing the Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery are strongly encouraged to apply. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants should have successfully completed at least the equivalent of the NSW HSC. It is desirable, but not essential, to sit the UMAT (Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test). INDIGENOUS SCHOOL STUDENT MENTORING PROGRAM UWS students have the opportunity to mentor Indigenous high school students, helping their mentees to broaden their horizons, feel more confident, and achieve educational, personal and career goals. As well as mentoring sessions, mentees take part in academic and cultural enrichment workshops at UWS and the cohort at each school devises and implements a group project, with mentors facilitating that process. Mentors can be Indigenous or non-Indigenous, and studying for any UWS degree. The program gives them the chance to develop their own personal and professional skills, as well as raising their awareness of Indigenous culture and the educational barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Former mentor and UWS graduate Amy Appleton said, ‘My involvement was a highlight of my year ... it was such a pleasure to interact with a terrific group of students and mentors. The training I received in mentoring combined with education surrounding Aboriginal culture has greatly enhanced the overall value of my degree.’ Revadhi Chelvarajah said, ‘With this initial experience, I am inspired to continue working with the Indigenous community both as a volunteer and in my professional career ... (it) instilled the belief I could make an impact on and help someone else as I could see the results of my mentoring first hand.’ Other mentors have said, ‘Being a mentor in this program gives you a happy feeling that you are contributing to a positive change in your local community’, ‘Great program for developing negotiation and communication skills’, ‘It is very rewarding’ and ‘It was such a positive experience’.

Helping you PASS Peer Assisted Study Sessions Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is a student-centred learning program. In PASS you will work with other students to understand the content of your unit/s and develop various study strategies to help you improve your academic performance. Through actively working together with other students, you will find that you are more engaged with the content and that your understanding deepens. You will also get to meet other people in your course. Each PASS group is run by a facilitator who has successfully studied the unit previously. PASS is free and voluntary. PASS is open to

all students studying in the unit who want to improve their understanding of course material and their academic performance. It is highly recommended for all students whether you are striving for a high distinction or a pass. Attendance at PASS does not replace tutorials or lectures. Rather, it supplements them through providing the opportunity to review, consolidate and clarify the course content.

MATES@UWS MATES@UWS is a peer-mentoring program for students just starting their university study, or returning to study after some time. New students are matched with students in later years of study. This helps new students make friends, network with other students and gain knowledge and skills to settle into life at university. For more information visit www.uws.edu.au/mates or email mates@uws.edu.au

PASS sessions run for an hour each week throughout the semester. Multiple sessions are offered in larger units and students can attend as many sessions as they wish. If you have any further enquiries please email pass@uws.edu.au
