“I am about to do a thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” I S A I A H 4 3 : 1 9 ( N R SV )

In the midst of hard times—the Great Depression of the 1930s—a Sunday school teacher in San Antonio, Texas, planted seeds for what would become The Upper Room daily devotional guide. Frances Craig saw the need for resources that would help people turn to a practice of daily prayer. She shared her vision with Travis Park Methodist Episcopal Church and leaders of the MEC Board of Home Missions. And in 1935, something new came to life; 100,000 copies of the first issue of The Upper Room were printed and quickly sold out. Francis Craig

Today, that little magazine is distributed around the world in over 30 languages. And in its 85 years, it has planted seeds for many other ministries and resources, including Upper Room Books. We pray that the books featured in this catalog—like all ministries of The Upper Room—invite you to create and enrich your daily life with God in times of peace and struggle.

Lent & Easter

We Are Beloved

NEW

A Lenten Journey with Protestant Prayer Beads Kristen E. Vincent As Christians, we often have the head knowledge that we are beloved—but deep in our hearts, do we truly believe it? In this 6-week study, you will follow biblical stories of Jesus as he learns that he is the beloved Son of God. Kristen Vincent points out that because the Son of God was fully human, he had to mature to understand that he was beloved. Just as Jesus learned of his belovedness, we too can discover that we are deeply loved. Each week contains a scripture reading, a devotion, reflection questions, an optional prayer bead experience, and a listening meditation. The book includes a Leader’s Guide for small groups. It also includes Good Friday and Easter readings for individuals. Explore what it means to be deeply loved by God. Quiet your mind so you can hear God calling you beloved. Five Loaves, Two Fish, Twelve Volunteers

AVA I L A B L E M A R C H 2 0 2 0

Growing a Relational Food Ministry Elizabeth Mae Magill

Sixty-two percent of food pantries and meal programs in the United States are faith-based. Most of these ministries are transactional; people needing food interact with church volunteers to earn access to direct service. Elizabeth Magill advocates relational ministry as a better model for food ministry. People donating food or money eat with the people who need food and get to know them as they serve alongside them. Those needing food share all aspects of the ministry, including planning, setting up, leading, serving, and cleaning. As volunteers become better acquainted with those they serve, they can form deep, meaningful relationships, creating a new way to be the church. Five Loaves, Two Fish, Twelve Volunteers tells the stories of eight churches that share food ministry with people who need their services. Full of practical advice, this book emphasizes that building relationships and offering radical welcome is more important work for churches than efficiency or order. It helps congregations evaluate their outreach and advises them on how to do it differently. PAPERBACK $13.99 978-0-8358-1915-2

A Family Like Mine

AVA I L A B L E A P R I L 2 0 2 0

Biblical Stories of Love, Loss, and Longing Rosalind C. Hughes Families are complicated, and they always have been. A Family Like Mine explores the surprising variety of family stories and relationships reflected in the Bible, emphasizing God’s grace, reconciliation, and renewal. The book tells the family stories of our spiritual ancestors in ways that resonate with our own family stories. Author Rosalind Hughes weaves accounts of familiar and less well-known biblical characters with stories of family formation, estrangement, adoption, and more. She imaginatively retells biblical stories, inviting the reader to dig deeper into the motivations, disappointments, faith, and fulfillment we hold in common with our biblical ancestors. Story-based and biblically informed, A Family Like Mine combines spiritual autobiography with Bible study to provide a gentle but probing look at the many “mansions” of God’s household, where Jesus has prepared a place for all God’s children. Reflection questions encourage readers to examine and compare their own family history and spiritual journey with the stories of families found in the Bible. PAPERBACK $13.99 978-0-8358-1921-3

Extraordinary Ministry in Ordinary Time An Invitation to Renewal for Pastors James A. Harnish

What energizes someone in pastoral ministry for the long haul? Holy days like Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost are the exception. Ordinary Time, the longest season of the Christian year, is where pastors spend most of their ministry. James Harnish invites pastors and other ministers to see Ordinary Time as a metaphor for the ordinary days of ministry. “Whether we thrive or merely survive depends on what we do with the ordinary days,” he writes. Harnish encourages ministers to develop spiritual disciplines and personal relationships to nourish their souls for long-term ministry. He highlights the importance of reflection on scripture, spiritual reading, journaling, prayer, and spiritual conversation with trusted friends. This 6-week study focuses on themes Harnish found crucial in over four decades of ministry: power, people, places, proclamation, perseverance, and promise. Daily readings help readers develop their own customized practices of spiritual formation to sustain and strengthen their life and ministry.

A Beginner’s Guide to Practicing Scriptural Imagination Kenneth H. Carter Jr. What is scriptural imagination? The word imagination does not mean the Bible is fantasy or untrue. A scriptural imagination allows us to look at the world through the stories and images of the Bible. As we view our world with scriptural imagination, we enter a continuous process of becoming more Christlike. In A Beginner’s Guide to Practicing Scriptural Imagination, Kenneth Carter focuses on four scripture passages to give readers an easy entry into the practice of scriptural imagination. Carter advocates reading and reflecting on the biblical texts with a group. Carter says that almost every situation and problem we face can be addressed by men and women sitting with biblical texts, listening for what God might be saying through those passages. Equally important is taking time to listen attentively to people who are marginalized. As readers practice the spiritual exercises in this book, they will grow as disciples of Jesus who can then transform their world. PAPERBACK $9.99 978-0-8358-1918-3 8 • BOOKSTORE.UPPERROOM.ORG

Beach Calling

A Devotional Journal for the Middle Years and Beyond Missy Buchanan Aging doesn’t take much effort—all you have to do is breathe. Aging faithfully is different. It requires intentional effort to stay focused on God as you make your way through a world of chaos and change. Many women dread aging and resist thinking about it. Yet God designed the human body to change over time, and growing older is part of God’s plan. How we handle the changes that accompany aging reveals much about our spiritual maturity. Beach Calling takes a fresh approach to aging. Missy Buchanan uses comforting imagery from the beach and ocean to engage readers in spiritual reflection. In this devotional journal for women, she guides readers to explore and embrace God’s plan for growing older. Each devotion focuses on a familiar aspect of beach life and offers a parallel lesson on aging. Each reading contains prompts that invite readers to capture their thoughts in the journaling space provided. Beach Calling helps women accept and prepare for life transitions, including the challenges of loss and decline. Soul Reset

Breakdown, Breakthrough, and the Journey to Wholeness Junius B. Dotson Everything was going fine . . . until it wasn’t. For Reverend Junius B. Dotson it took an actual breakdown during a funeral to realize he needed a reset. As he recalls his own journey through grief, depression, burnout, and emotional breakdown, Dotson is passionate about calling for a soul reset for pastors, church leaders, and all disciples of Jesus Christ. This 6-week churchwide study is for everyone who moves at breakneck speed through their daily lives, often relying only on their own strength to bring God’s kingdom on earth. Jesus shows us a different way—an easier, unforced rhythm of what kingdom work looks like. It’s a balance of work, rest, play, worship, exercise, and eating well—spiritual practices that keep our souls hydrated and healthy as we do the work of the church in the world. Soul Reset is a call for the church and all of Jesus’ disciples to reset and reorder their lives around spiritual practices, to learn to walk through difficult seasons with our souls connected to the source of Living Water so that we don’t burn out or break down. And if we do burn out or break down, we learn to lift one another up and point one another back to Jesus. PAPERBACK $14.99 978-0-8358-1896-4
