I wrote Beach Calling for you, and I wrote it for me. Perhaps you are lucky enough to be reading this book on a pristine beach. But even if you are reading it at a cluttered kitchen table with a cup of lukewarm coffee, I hope the lyrical language of the sea will transport you to a beachside retreat and draw you gently into the deep water of each spiritual lesson.

If you want to ponder what aging faithfully means, you will want to read this book. If you find accepting or acknowledging your own aging journey to be difficult, you desperately need to read this book.

It’s time to kick off your flip-flops. Feel the sand between your toes. Let’s walk together toward the open sea. The beach is calling.

Deeply personal reflection on life and faith is precisely what the devotionals in this book invite you to explore for yourself. Starting with a scripture text, continuing with the author’s meditation, and concluding with a brief prayer, each page invites you to reflect and integrate your daily reality with your life in Christ. This practice is a variation on the classic, time-honored tradition of lectio divina or “spiritual reading.”

—Marjorie Thompson, in the Foreword to Disciplines 2020
