WHERE ICE CREAM MEETS FITNESS

W

e all know the saying, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream,” and we’re at it again! July 27th marks the third annual Atlanta Ice Cream Festival, AICF, to be held at Piedmont Park.

A TRUE FITNESS FRIEND

A

few things we know for sure is that the season for getting physically fit is in full swing and that overall good health and fitness is a necessary component of a beneficial lifestyle.

Atlanta has no shortage of awesome nightlife and adult entertainment options, but what about family fun? Sure, there are amusement parks and fairy lands in other states but America’s economic woes have put a crunch on budgets and created a lapse in household integrity nationwide. AICF founder and proud family man Kevin James created this family-friendly experience with that and his two daughters in mind. Georgia grown and supported, the AICF has something for everyone in your clan—and everyone’s taste buds. Festival goers can count on having dozens of traditional ice cream choices, innovatively infused flavors to savor, chipped ice, frozen slushies and many other iced treats on tap. With vendors like Yogurberry, Rita’s Frozen Ice, Bruster’s (hosting the ice cream eating contest) and Kilwins, this will no doubt be the highlight of the week! It doesn’t end with a cone or a spoon either! There will also be live musical entertainment, wellness agencies on-site providing free health screenings and you guessed it—YOGA hour! With a culinary background and a career in hospitality, Kevin— with his “glass half full” point of view set out to enhance Atlanta’s child-sensitive, positive entertainment options and we think he’s accomplished just that. Save the date! July 27th from 11am to 6pm. Entry and entertainment are free, just patronize the vendors while you enjoy. Not only does it record your habits—it also reports analytics back to you and makes recommendations to help you get closer to your goals With a company tagline like, “Fitness isn’t fun when you’re doing it by yourself,” this little fitness buddy makes getting and staying healthier simpler than a walk in the park. It’s also a major component of his organization, the Give Back Unite Campaign. He says that giving back needs no explanation, JUST DO IT! One can expect to hear inspirational music, love ballads and songs with fresh melodies when they press play on a Xavier Lewis record. He does not do it all alone either, he is backed by the distinguished band Whiskey Peach. In his words, “they are hands down, one the hottest ensembles in the state of Georgia.” When asked about the state of the music industry, he shares the thought that, “all artists have the same goal—to be relevant. You have to be different to be relevant and to have a lasting career. You have to be a visionary to last in this game. I pride myself on having a plan.”

In addition to his wonderful talents, Xavier is the CEO of his own label, Millennium Soul Music Group. His true passion for good music exudes in every song written and every performance completed. usic is an eternal art form that can evoke emotion, joy, healing and comfort. And some would venture to say that music today needs a refresher. “The Antidote to R&B”, by composer and singer Xavier Lewis and his renowned band Whiskey Peach, may just be the right potion. Born in New York and raised in Miami, this R&B marvel made his transition to Atlanta in 2005. Earning his first major opportunity as a background singer for R&B artist Urban Mystic, he made it his business to make it a learning opportunity for himself. Instead of following the other background artists, going straight to their rooms after the shows, he chose to follow the schedule of the main act, he tagged along for all press rounds and gained priceless lessons that are attributed to his success today. Triumph stayed within grasp and in 2011 Xavier was named the Grand Prize winner of the Georgia Lottery All-Access Music Search for Pop and R&B artists. His hit single, “Georgia Clay“ debuting statewide on WSB was a rewarding experience that poured into his motivation to spread his gift. This self-proclaimed “crazy about philanthropy” artist penned a song aptly titled, “Give Back.” It’s an inspirational song, endorsed by the McDonald’s Corporation that means to inspire. With 70% of lifetime royalties going back to charities that will bring benefits to schools, churches and the community, it carries on his vision to make a worldwide impact.

EVEN HOTELS The New Healthy Balance for Travelers

A

s an international traveler for over two decades, I have gone to great lengths to maintain my exercise regime and to eat healthy meals while on the road. When the hotel gym is no larger than a converted guest room containing two treadmills, I have taken my routine to the streets and fast-walked city blocks. But if it’s dark outside or I’m in sub-zero weather, I might be forced to stretch out on the hard guest room floor to perform a set of crunches or use the edge of the bed for tricep dips. Then there’s the food. As a corporate meeting planner I am lucky that my job includes planning the menus and I choose healthy selections to meet attendee requests and dietary restrictions. But as a leisure traveler, this option does not always exist. Enter EVEN Hotels, InterContinental Hotels Group’s (IHG) newest brand specifically focused on wellness. A medium priced hotel, EVEN offers a focus on exercise, healthy eating and a restful sleep, all key requests for business travelers. IHG conducted extensive consumer research and found that Americans need and want to lead a healthier lifestyle and do not want sacrifice work/life balance while on the road. IHG’s focus for the brand revolves around four priority areas: Keep Active, Rest Easy, Eat Well and Accomplish More. Instead of the gym hidden on the basement floor, EVEN Hotels’ gym is a focal point of the entrance and can be seen off the lobby. In addition to the newest in cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, the area offers plenty of mats, crunch balls and room to stretch. IHG says their “wellness savvy” staff leads routines and offers exercise tips to give a personal training touch. If you would rather exercise in the privacy of your own room, you can use the coat rack, which also functions as a pull-up bar, and the luggage rack, which alternates as a workout bench. Every room is spacious enough to offer a workout area at the bottom of the bed and a longer space beside the bed, complete with your own personal exercise mat and foam rollers to give your back a massage after strenuous exercise. There is also a circuit– training guide offering a quick workout plan without ever leaving the room. At the end of the day, a restful sleep is all important, and EVEN Hotels makes comfort a priority. THE ULTIMATE HEALING ICE MACHINE Redefining what it means to ’Chill Out’

A

tall metal chamber that looks like a tanning bed on steroids with space age gases rising from within — it’s a sight that might send many running for the door. So why are people ranging from pro athletes to urban professionals clamoring to get in the door of Atlanta’s Icebox Cryotherapy?

The therapy involves standing in a cryosauna for two-and-a-half to three minutes, surrounded by nitrogen gas (don’t worry, it’s nontoxic) that feels a bit like an ice bath — without the ice. Immediately after the session, clients are encouraged to do a two- to three-minute warm-up on an exercise bike to help boost circulation.

“The great thing about cryotherapy is that it doesn’t matter if you are a stay-athome mom recovering from a 10K or an athlete recovering from a serious injury, there is a health benefit for you,” says Alia Alston, who co-owns Icebox with her brother, Ethan Whitfield.

So what keeps Atlanta’s fittest coming back? The benefits, which include decreased muscle soreness, improved circulation, decreased fatigue and inflammation, a boost to the metabolism (each treatment burns between 500-800 calories), and healthier skin. URBANLUX

CULTURE

“People love cryotherapy because it’s like hitting the reset button for your body,” Alston says. “Think of the benefits of icing an injured knee. Now think of what the benefits would be if you were able to cool your entire body, but instead of it being topical, it’s systemic. Whole body Cryotherapy does what an ice bath wishes it could do.” Then there are the pain management benefits that Alston has experienced first- hand. “After being hit by a drunk driver years ago, I was left with a neck and back injury that lead to pain and numbness as I got older, ” Alston says. “So I ended up trying cryotherapy as a means to keep me off of the operating table, and it worked! A year and a half later, I feel amazing.” According to Alston, the cold therapy was developed in Japan in the late 1970s and has been popular in Europe for many years. Alston and her brother, who is a special operations medic for the U.S. Army, came across their first cryotherapy machine with a little help from their father who is a chiropractor in Tallahassee, Fla. They piloted the business in his office and were pleasantly surprised when athletes from across North Florida started flocking to Icebox. Flash forward two years, and the duo are reaping the rewards of owning the first cryotherapy spa in Georgia, with a new Icebox location in Buckhead off Roswell Road. Regular clients include former Olympians, members of the Atlanta Hawks and Falcons teams, weekend warriors, active adults with joint pain, and others seeking the benefits of this cold therapy. There are some people who should avoid cryotherapy, such as those who are pregnant or have heart or blood pressure conditions that aren’t controlled. But for most, the more frequently they can take the therapy, the better. For example, Alston recommends three treatments in close succession to maximize results the first week, then as needed after. Also, the therapy is often more effective when paired with other treatments such as chiropractic adjustments and physical or massage therapy for injuries. Dr. Lauren Polivka is Icebox’s in-house physical therapist who often works with clients to develop plans specific to their needs using treatments like Astym, dry needling, and nutritional counseling. “The goal is to provide an amazing therapy experience in a nonmedical, healthy environment — we want to be Atlanta’s first therapeutic spa,” Alston says. PIEDMONT PARK IS BRAND NEW ALL OVER AGAIN!

T

he Piedmont Park Conservancy, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1989 to assist the city of Atlanta in maintaining and enhancing Piedmont Park, a public gathering space for more than 100 years. The historic portion of Piedmont Park was restored by the Conservancy, adding beautification to the park, increased maintenance and security, various Park Programs and Workshops, and a 53-acre expansion of green space. The Conservancy mission is to enhance and preserve Piedmont Park as a vital urban green space and as a cultural and recreational resource that enhances the quality of life for all Atlantans. Finding ways to improve Piedmont Park, the Conservancy formed an Advisory Committee, comprised of representatives from the Park’s many constituencies to oversee each major planning and restoration initiatives. There are several committees on the Piedmont Park Board, and one that is most important is the “Capital Improvements Committee”. Much of what guides the Capital Improvements Committee’s work is the master plan vision for Piedmont Park. “It is not just building new things,” says Yvette Bowden – President/CEO

of Piedmont Park, “but we have to be in the business of taking care of what’s already there at the Park.” The vision to enhance Piedmont Park dates back many years ago, but was revisited in 2005, which drives the enhancements that are seen in the Park today, since the construction in 2008. The Conservancy has successfully restored the historical portion of Piedmont Park since its inception 20 years ago, which includes the Active Oval, the historic Bathhouses and Pools, Lake Clara Meer and Oak Hill; this was part of the phase one $72.5 million restoration and expansion initiative. Phase two will soon be underway, which will cover the northern part of Piedmont Park and will expand the Park by 53-acres, a 40 percent increase in useable green space.

“Great parks are an essential ingredient in great cities. Piedmont Park is the green heart of Atlanta, and our city is blessed to have it. We must commit to being good stewards of its preservation.” — Arthur M. Blank

COMMUNITY

Because the Piedmont Park Conservancy is a non-profit organization, and have paid for a host of new amenities to the Park, they’re continuously in fundraising mode for the 53-acre expansion. The many gifts from their donors, sponsors, Park members and those who pay program fees have been rewarding. The Piedmont Park Conservancy has raised and invested more than $60 million to beautify, secure and expand the Park, as well as add new programs. The Conservancy manages more than 90 percent of the Park’s daily maintenance and security. “Money has to be earned or raised, and we appreciate everyone supporting the Conservancy,” says Bowden. Three unique venues to embellish Piedmont Park have been restored; the Magnolia Hall and Lawn, Dockside, and Greystone, all offer great space to hold personal, corporate, and charitable events. The Conservancy funds and manages off-duty police officers to patrol the Park for added security. In May 2004, the Conservancy also assumed the management of the City’s security contract for the Park. Now, security personnel actively patrol the Park instead of just remaining on the bridge. Piedmont Park networks with other Park conservancies around the Atlanta area through the “Park Pride” organization to help bring forth a solid connectivity of great public spaces. Their partnership has extended to the “City Park Alliance” nationally, where Park conservancy discussions are held to improve great Parks of great States. “It takes a village to make a Park,” says Bowden. Piedmont Park Conservancy implements innovative sustainable practices like Park-wide recycling, rainwater collection, compost tea fertilization program and drought-resistant landscaping to keep the Park clean and green.

programs and Summer Day Camps for the youth, to Green “open-air fresh produce” Markets and free guided tours for adults and seniors. The EnviroVentures Summer Camp gives children between the ages of 5 and 11 the perfect environment for outdoor exploration and nature discovery. The Green Market, which attracts over 90,000 visitors over the course of a year, offers a wide variety of “openair” fresh produce, cut flowers, and chef demonstrations. Lead by program naturalists, these programs and workshops offer hands-on learning adventures! A new camp was recently started at Piedmont Park called “Camp Fit”, which is a boot camp for kids from ages 11 – 15. While these youth and community programs are great, Piedmont Park continues to focus on the evolution of how to use some of the new spaces in the programming for educational experiences and how the community can be healthy in their own spaces. Phase 2 of the Conservancy, which is the northern part of Piedmont Park and the remaining 12.5 acres to complete the 53-acre master plan, will have six new additional in-ground amenities, including an outdoor classroom and community garden space where people can rent garden plots and learn how to garden for themselves. “Parks are living things that can educate and engage people in a million ways, from the fitness components, to the arts, or to have a place to decompress,” says Bowden.

Promoting healthy living, wellness and fitness plays a vital part of the Piedmont Park Conservancy. The Park is always active with fitness programs and at the Active Oval. Dozens of fitness Boot Camps for the youth and adults have been put in place for healthy living in the community. Programs like “Love You Healthy”, which is run out of Piedmont Park’s Community Center, allows the community to work out in the Park with trained instructors. One of the most active trails around Piedmont Park is the connection to the Beltline Atlanta. Additionally, tracks have been added around the Active Oval, which was in part funded by the Atlanta Track Club, for running/walking and where the “Boot Camp for a Cause” program is held. New Basketball Courts have been added, and the Park has invested in a public pool – the Piedmont Park Aquatic Center, which offers swim lessons to its visitors. All of the in-ground fitness equipments have been added to Piedmont Park by donors. Various youth and community programs have been put in place at Piedmont Park by the Conservancy from Environmental Educational URBANLUX

COMMUNITY

“Parks are essential to the health of individuals and communities. They offer recreation and renewal, promote exercise, reduce crime, revitalize neighborhoods, protect the environment, and bring communities together.” - Trust for Public Land The Conservancy has brought forth a great change at the Piedmont Park, and some of the exciting new features like basketball courts, 3 acres of hardwood forest, the ability to walk along a creek, the Six Springs wetland areas are all experiences the community did not have three years ago. One of the most popular and well attended areas of Piedmont Park is the 3 acre dog Park, which has an enclosed small and large dog off-leashed area to allow dogs to run freely within the enclosed space. Because the community of dog lovers is so strong in Atlanta, Piedmont Park has dedicated one fundraiser each year to a special pool party just for dogs – “Splish Splash Doggie Bash”; an exciting event and opportunity for dogs to swim in the pool.

Aquatic Center - Before

Aquatic Center - After

Piedmont Park is serving over 3.5 million people each year, and that number is growing. There is a great partnership with the city of Atlanta and Piedmont Park which makes Piedmont Park Conservancy a great service story. Bowden says, “the success story of Piedmont Park since the inception of the Conservancy over 20 years ago is together the community has created and maintained an environment that has turned from a blight to a showpiece, and is being maintained in a high quality way!” “Piedmont Park is brand new, all over again,” says Bowden. Whether you run, bike, skate, picnic or enjoy a festival at Piedmont Park, you are benefiting from the efforts of Piedmont Park Conservancy; 85% of the large events are hosted by Piedmont Park. Volunteers are often recruited by the Conservancy to keep Piedmont Park beautiful as a part of their “Clean and Green” project; keeping Piedmont Park clean and beautifully landscaped is a never-ending job. Volunteers contribute over $100,000 of work each year, and the Park Conservancy could not do what they do without support, enthusiasm, and gifts of talent and time from their Volunteers. o look at Kevin and Keith Hodge, one could make any number of assumptions. Because of their physiques, are they fitness pros? Because of their devilishly handsome looks, are they models? Because of their on-camera chemistry, are they comedians or actors? Yes, yes, and yes again! Because this is our fitness issue, we scoured gyms, overturned dumbbells and ran many miles to find the best experts to discuss with us their views on success, family, fitness—and ultimately health and happiness. Twin towers and fitness gurus, known to millions of their beloved YouTube, FaceBook & Twitter fans as the Hodgetwins, joined us for a candid look into their lives, careers and entertainment & fitness empires. Press pause on your fitness DVD and join the conversation. - Clorissa X. Wright

ULM: Are you the only children, if not, where do you fall in line? Did being a twin have advantages or disadvantages growing up? HODGETWINS: We are the youngest in our family. We have an older brother and sister. We were very shy when we were younger and having a twin helped with that because we always had each other. Looking at us now, people would not believe how shy we were. Some of it remains, though. ULM: Being identical twins comes with the assumption that you have no differences. Keith & Kevin, please tell us one thing about your brother that you don’t possess but also admire. KEITH: Well, Kevin is more laid back and I really admire that about him. KEVIN: That’s funny because Keith is a lot more serious than I am, and I admire that about him. ULM: Do you have children? If so, what are their ages? KEITH: I have 3 kids, Ages 12, 6 and 3. KEVIN: I have 4 kids, Ages 17, 10, 5 and 10 months. ULM: How do you stress the importance of healthy eating habits and exercise to your children? HODGETWINS: We demonstrate it by example. Since health and fitness is such a large part of our lives, our children are exposed to it every day. This is our lifestyle, so it’s normal to them. They see us going to the gym, they hear us discussing nutrition and they understand the impact it has on our physical appearance and well-being. The key is to make it a part of their lifestyle so they make those same great choices on their own. ULM: What advice would you give parents for keeping their kids fit? HODGETWINS: What’s most important is that parents demonstrate a positive, healthy attitude towards fitness and nutritional decisions. That way, children will adopt your positive attitude towards food, fitness and body image. Make it fun and be consistent. Create opportunities to be active as a family and take the time to cook and make snacks together. Parents can make better food and exercise choices for their kids when they plan ahead. ~ continued URBANLUX

ULM: How did you get started in entertainment? HODGETWINS: Well, we took the long route into the entertainment industry. We’ve always been naturally funny, but we worked in the corporate world for a while and even enlisted in the Marine Corps, but none of it made us happy. We had this dream of making people laugh while inspiring them to live healthier lives, but had no idea how to achieve that and earn a living. We started doing YouTube videos on the side and really enjoyed it. One day at work, Keith had the idea that we should quit our jobs, and do YouTube videos full-time, so we did. If someone would have told us back then that we’d be doing this, we would not have believed them.

ULM: You guys have over 2500 videos available for viewing online, how do you keep subject matter fresh? HODGETWINS: We get a lot of help from our fans! They’re great. We receive hundreds of emails per day from all over the world. It is a great source of content for us. People ask us for advice on everything from current events to their most personal issues. We also pay attention to things that are happening in the media and on the internet. So there is no shortage of things for us to talk about. ULM: With over 500,000 subscribers, would you consider yourselves official role models? HODGETWINS: We believe that people pick their role models for different reasons. We didn’t start our YouTube channels to be role models. We did it to share our thoughts and perspectives with the hope that it would help someone. We now know that because of what we do, there are people who have been inspired by us to change their lives or improve their fitness level or just break out of their shells and try something new like we did. That’s what’s important to us. ULM: You have a vast portfolio, dabbling in comedic relief, fitness and reality TV. Which platform has helped you to make the biggest impact on your followers? HODGETWINS: It would definitely be our Twin Muscle Workout channel, which we launched first. It has helped so many people lose weight and improve their fitness and overall well-being. Our followers have told us that it has changed their lives. ULM: What examples do you have that substantiates the Hodge twins credibility/ability to bring peoples fitness goals to fruition? HODGETWINS: My brother and I are both International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) certified personal trainers. We take what we do very seriously, so we are constantly doing research and updating our knowledge on what’s new in fitness. Our credibility really comes from our fans, though. We get emails with before and after pictures from our fans that show us how we’ve impacted their lives and helped them reach their goals. It is life changing for them, so it’s personal for us. It lets us know how important it is to put the time and effort into our fitness channel. ULM: Who inspires you to be fit? HODGETWINS: The mirror. LOL! Years ago before we got in shape, we both felt horrible looking at ourselves in the mirror. Now, we push and inspire each other to work hard and stay fit. ~ continued

ULM: We understand how being physically fit leads to a longer, healthier life…what are the wellness benefits of laughter? HODGETWINS: Laughing has a relaxing effect on the body. It can decrease tension and provide a mental release from stress. It also improves your mood. We believe that people should always try to find humor in your everyday life. You will definitely see a change in your wellness. ULM: Many people are looking for a quick fix to being overweight – what are the top no-nos people should beware of when starting a fitness journey? HODGETWINS: Many people don’t understand that the key to weight loss is calories in vs. calories burned per day. There are obviously several approaches to weight loss and each person must find which combination of options safely works for them. We’d like for people to not focus on trying to find weight loss in a bottle or as a quick fix. It’s all about making it a part of your lifestyle, which means a daily commitment to being healthy is required. ULM: Is there a different approach to training men versus women? HODGETWINS: Not really. Both sexes basically want to lose weight, which means they need to burn fat, and both want to build muscle, which means they need to do some form of strength training. We find that women are more focused on weight loss and men want to build more muscle ULM: Urban Lux Magazine is headquartered in Atlanta, a southern city with soul-food, fast-food and pop-up restaurants everywhere you turn. What advice do you have for people who like dining out but don’t want to blow the buttons off of their healthy lifestyle? HODGETWINS: You can eat pretty much whatever you want. It’s all about moderation, portion sizes and your activity level. It comes down to calories in vs. calories out. We eat out, but we’re physically active. There has to be a balance. ULM: We know you have a guilty food pleasure – share with us! HODGETWINS: Oh, man. We love to eat and we really love good food. Our cheat meals include pizza, barbecue ribs, or Popeye’s chicken and biscuits. But definitely not all at the same time. ~ continued

We’re also doing some commercials. We have an opportunity to do some work on the radio that we’re really excited about. Hopefully you guys will see and hear us in a really big way soon. ULM: Any final words of wisdom for your many fans? HODGETWINS: We want to thank everyone for their support, and are especially grateful to our YouTube fans. We’ve gotten to know them through their posts and emails. We know life can be tough at times but we’d like to encourage everyone to stay positive and find as many opportunities to laugh as possible. ULM: You’re delving into television and film – elaborate a bit. Are you looking to take on roles in front of or behind the camera? HODGETWINS: We definitely want to act in front of the camera, but wanted to take the craft seriously and also be taken seriously. So our manager, Angela Nichelle, is helping us to expand our brand outside of YouTube. We’ve attended some formal classes to get ready. We both really loved doing improv in one of our acting classes. It seemed to suit our natural personalities. We’d welcome roles in comedy, action and commercials but down the line, we could definitely see ourselves producing shows as well.

laser hair removal for him & her

M

en and women alike spend hours every week removing body hair. It’s a necessary chore, but it shouldn’t take obscene amounts of time doing it. There are several ways to remove unwanted hair but none compare to the long-lasting results of laser treatment. The benefits of laser hair removal are endless: • It is the only permanent method on the market as it perpetually reduces the number of hair follicles and their ability to produce hair • It cuts down on maintenance time • It is proven safe for all skin types • It reduces ingrown hair growth and razor bumps • It can be done on almost any area of the body We’ve done some digging and these Metro Atlanta places come highly recommended: WIFH—Dunwoody area | wifh.com Catering to men and women, this aesthetic center has a 5-star Yelp rating, amazing information including before and after photos and high-satisfaction customer testimonials. When sporting solo, begin the application on the outskirts of the face, working inwards toward the center. Avoid over dusting the eye and cheek area. As a contour, this powder works wonders. Unlike other powdered products used to highlight and contour, bronzers deposit minimal color and blend wonderfully giving the illusion of shape and warmth. ALE SHARPTON

want to first say it’s an honor to contribute to the informative and ultra hip Urban Lux Magazine. I am an award-winning journalist; world traveler; beer aficionado under the alias Ale Sharpton; and write about everything from the aforementioned best beverage in the world, to spirits, global attractions, hotels, food, and automobiles to name a few. My goal as your Urban Lux Insider is to keep you cherished readers informed on anything worthy of making your life that much more enjoyable.

O

I am a New Yorker by birth, but for the last 22 years, I have developed a true fondness for Georgia’s capital, and consider myself a proud rep of one of the greatest cities in the world. So with that, let’s kick this off with a toast—beers you should strongly consider sipping this summer— and gawk at the features the 2013 Range Rover boasts for $96,000. Let’s go! Cheers to you! Dennis aka Ale

Beat the heat: Summer Beers

kay, the mercury is definitely rising, but you still want to enjoy the outdoors, maybe hit up a party and, of course, sip something. Well there are beers made particularly for the summer because they are crisp, refreshing, and typically low in alcohol so that you can pound back a few without getting totally obliterated. Below, I feature a few tasty craft ales and a lager packaged specifically in cans because they are easy to transport, discard, and enjoy by the pool or beach. Happy Sippin’! 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon

Mother Earth Brewing Second Wind Pale Ale

4.9% alcohol by volume

5% alcohol by volume

Tasty, refreshing, and delicious, this American wheat beer out of San Francisco is brewed with watermelon. That’s right, watermelon. It is not overly sweet and I especially love introducing beer naysayers to this one!

Hoppy, medium-bodied, and a smooth sipper, the state of North Carolina is kicking much tail in the brew department and Mother is a good reason why!

Westbrook Brewing Company White Thai

Finch’s Secret Stache Stout

5% alcohol by volume

5.3% alcohol by volume

From the inviting can design to the exotic ingredients including ginger root, lemongrass and Sorachi Ace hops, this brew crew out of Mt. Pleasant, SC knows how to pack the essence of Thailand in a can. This is a fun one!

Hands down, when it comes to canned stouts in the 5 percent range, this is my favorite. Coming out of Chicago, this smooth ale packs the bold flavors of espresso, chocolate, and dark fruit, while still maintaining a mere 5.3 percent alcohol by volume. Trust me, that’s one hell of a feat. Delish!

Leinenkugel’s (Various)

Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager

4.2 to 4.9% alcohol by volume

5% alcohol by volume

I couldn’t pick just one because when it comes to folks who say all beer is bitter, Leinenkugel’s Summer Wheat, Summer Shandy, Berry Weiss and Honey Weiss will kill that faulty assumption with the quickness!

We can’t forget the lagers, so this stellar brewery out of Chico, CA does the trick with this crisp, hoppy, and spicy Pilsner-style cold one deserves some love.

here are some beautiful automobiles out there, but the Range Rover has consistently been an extremely popular choice (or at least dream car) for those fond of this SUV’s balancing act of having a posh interior, state-of-the art technology, sexy looks, muscular frame, and ability to take on virtually any outdoor terrain. Well, I had the opportunity to drive the 2013 Range Rover with all the fixings, totaling a mere $96,195 with the HSE package ($82,650 base price). Yep, this is the baller model and besides its powerful engine (5.0L 375 horsepower V8 to be exact), cloud-like ride (Enhanced Electronic Air Suspension), and imposing presence which punks the majority of other vehicles considered “competitors,” there are a number of other features that brought Mr. Rover over the top. Here are some standouts: • The incredible premium Meridian 825-watt, 19-speaker surround sound system. [Can you believe a 1700-watt 29 speaker Meridian sound system ($4,450) is optional? Yep!] • Plush Oxford leather seats with cooling and heating properties, plus front seat massage (Climate Comfort Package) • Front cooler under the middle console • Auto surround camera system on a 12.3-inch screen which is perfect for full driver visibility • Doors closing on their own after a light push (Soft Door Close) • Automatic Load Leveling that enables the truck to rise and lower depending on the driving situation (think hydraulics)

• Triple-Zone automatic climate control system • A heated front windshield (no more scraping ice thanks to the defrosting lines, which are virtually invisible), plus rain-sensing wipers that automatically adjust speed • The signature Terrain Response System built for you to effortlessly conquer snow, mud, sand, and extremely rocky roads • And to remind you what you are driving, the power-folding side mirrors brandish a Range Rover hologram on the ground when the vehicle is remotely unlocked (think Batman signal)

So if your bank account is stacked enough for you to consider an automobile nearing a six-figure price tag, this 2013 Range Rover is certainly worth a test drive. Oh, and to truly get a feel for all the dynamics and driving enhancements the Land Rover collection offers, consider taking the ultimate Land Rover Experience, a multi-landscape drive that tests out the many features and amenities of their vehicles. I did it at the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, and it was unforgettable! Visit LandRover.com/Experience for more information. Until next time, please visit AleSharpton.com and follow me at @alesharpton to see what other brews and fresh autos I am giving props to. 33 SPX Instructor & School Teacher STELLAR BODIES

Tia: What inspired you to build a career in Health and Fitness? Ellie: I have always been active; however, recently I have taken Health and Fitness to another level. I am now teaching at “Stellar Bodies” (this class is Pilates on steroids). In addition, to fitness, I am a pre-school teacher and my teaching schedule allows me the opportunity to focus on creating a career in the area of fitness and health. I am so privileged that I have two careers that I love. It is a great combination. Tia: Where do you mingle in the Atlanta area, and what is the dating scene offering you? Ellie: I live in Brookhaven, and I really like “Noche” in Town Brookhaven it is always a fun environment. I love their outdoor seating. I also like the “Big Ketch” located in Buckhead off Roswell Road. It is a great restaurant with live music. I meet friends for drinks and dinner on a regular basis. For me to accomplish my goals I have released hanging out in clubs and partying. I am currently dating but I am not serious with anyone particularly. I normally meet men in the gym because we are living the same lifestyle. Tia: What are your preferences when dating? Are you drawn to individuals in the profession of Health and Fitness?

Ellie: I have dated the spectrum from musicians to artist of all sorts. However, I have found that I share a commonality with men in Health and Fitness. Commonality is always a starting point in relationships. I want to enter races with the man I date and know that he appreciates the experience. Being active is the most important thing to me. Health and Fitness is my Lifestyle. Tia: Paint me a picture of the perfect date. Ellie: I have been on many great dates. I am simple and I appreciate the small things. My ideal date is starting the day with a workout, brunch, and good conversation. Then we can transition and get dressed up and go out and have a night of drinks, dinner, and dancing. Tia: How does being fit and healthy influence an individual’s dating life? Ellie: An individual has to know what they desire and you cannot be willing to compromise. Confidence is everything when dating. Tia: Urban Lux Magazine believes that Luxury is what you make it, what does Luxury means to you. Ellie: I live a great luxurious life because I have two careers that I absolutely love. I experience luxury every day.

Tia: What inspired you to build a career in Health and Fitness? Sonya: Health and Fitness comes natural for me because I have been an athlete my whole life. Personal training has served as my career since 2005. However, I still feel like a baby in the game, having a lot to learn. I work with clients on an individual basis targeting specific personal needs. I also love conducting group work when I have the opportunity. My clients can expect a high intensity dynamic training when they exercise with me. Tia: Where do you mingle in the Atlanta area, and what is the dating scene offering you? Sonya: When I am out with friends, we are involved in some type of outdoors event or we are having dinner. I am in this season of my life where I am focused on my Cross-Fit career so I am not meeting new individuals. However, there are times that I desire someone special in my life. Tia: What are your preferences when dating? Sonya: I meet men in the Health and Fitness arena but I still have not met that “person yet. I have to share my time with someone who shares the same passion for Cross-fit as I do. I am quite simple, I want a man who is understanding, patient, and funny. I have to be with a man who has fitness goals, is physicaly fit or working on it. URBANLUX

DONELL WILLIAMS 32 Fitness Trainer & Owner ABSOLUT FITNESS PERSONAL TRAINING

Tia: What inspired you to build a career in Health and Fitness? Donell: Health and fitness is a lifestyle for me. Fitness is what I do from the time I wake up until I retire for the evening. Having open-heart surgery at three months and not expected to live definitely served as inspiration. I am 32 still living strong, I am healthy, and I am loving life. In addition, my father worked out on a regular basis and his physical physique served as inspiration as well. This led me to exercising consistently, and now I have a career in Health and Fitness. Tia: Where do you mingle in the Atlanta area, and what is the dating scene offering you? Donell: I am not a club or partying type of person. I love going out to Lake Lanier renting boats and spending time with close friends. I have been spending a lot of time at Stone Mountain lately. I will definitely attend an upscale event if time permits. In addition, Strip in Atlantic Station is a spot that I have frequented lately. Right now, dating is not a priority for me, I live by “handle your business first and everything else will fall in line.” I do not stress out about dating; I meet women on a daily basis. I have noticed that there are many superficial women here in Atlanta and that is quite comical to me. I am intensely specific concerning the type of woman I am looking for. Tia: What are your preferences when dating? Are you drawn to individuals in the profession of Health and Fitness? Donell: I examine everything when considering dating. I review all of the variables. However, because I am a man I definitely see the physical quickly. A woman has to be fit, intelligent professional and driven. She has to be spiritual because this is my foundation. My favorite scripture is “as a man thinketh so is he.” I have created my life through my thoughts and beliefs. The woman I date has to be secure within and have an aggressive personality. I need to know that she is my equal.

Tia: How does being fit and healthy influence an individual’s dating life? Donell: You have to treat your body like the temple that it is. Keeping an active lifestyle keeps the body in shape. When this occurs, confidence is created. Confidence is everything. If you do not have confidence, you will settle for less than you deserve. Consistency always yields results.

Tia: Paint me a picture of the perfect date. Donell: My perfect date would begin downtown in a laid-back environment enjoying drinks and amazing conversation. I love getting mentally intimate. If I am dating someone new, dancing is definitely on the agenda because I want to see the intellectual side as well as the fun free spirited aspect of her. I love reggae music so we would dance the night away. Photos: Brice Esso

ANDRE URQUIZA 29 Crossfit Trainer & Co-Owner CROSSFIT HD

Tia: What inspired you to build a career in Health and Fitness? Andre: I have always been active. Growing up in Brazil I was always swimming or involved in some type of outdoor activity. Later in life, I raced motorcycles and this led to me entering Cross-fit Training in 2008. Tia: Where do you mingle in the Atlanta area, and what is the dating scene offering you? Andre: When I do hang out I am normally with my friends. I always remain conscious of my eating and drinking because Health and Fitness is a lifestyle. I live in Chamblee so when I do go out you can find me in the Dunwoody, Buckhead, or Midtown area. I can have a good time anywhere because it is all about the company that you keep. I like Eclipse De Luna in Dunwoody, Tin Lizzy’s, and the “W” in Buckhead. I love dressing up on an occasion. When it comes to dating, I am always open to meet new people. I separate my business from my social life. I meet women on a regular basis simply being out and through friends. I am all about getting to know someone to see if there is a “click,” if not we can remain friends. I do not close myself off from dating I am keeping myself open. I balance my work life, social life and my vacationing life. Tia: What are your preferences when dating? Are you drawn to individuals in the profession of Health and Fitness? Andre: A woman does not have to be involved with Cross-Fit specifically. However, I do prefer physically fit women. Yes, I do prefer a certain body type but personality is important too. Fitness is a big part of my life and I want someone who understands this. Professional motivated women are attractive. I am not attracted to complacency. I want someone who is educated because good conversation is necessary. Tia: Paint me a picture of the perfect date. Andre: The perfect date is when you glance at your watch and wonder where the time went. Fluid conversation and laughter is necessary. Because I am an outdoor person, any type of outside activity is perfect. I like Après Diem and the Park Tavern when considering a date location; I can go there and listen to nice music enjoying a nice glass of wine with a beautiful woman.

Tia: How does being fit and healthy influence an individual’s dating life? Andre: When you promote behavior to enhance your Health and Fitness a physiological shift occurs which encourages a psychological change. This creates confidence, when you’re happy people perceive you differently. Confidence is attractive. In addition, it is important to know that food and nutrition affects your mood, and this influences your Photos: Brice Esso dating life. Tia: Urban Lux Magazine believes that Luxury is what you make it, what does Luxury means to you. Andre: Luxury fulfills a need yet goes beyond desires.

Healthy Foot Care Habits for Active People

I

n this day and age, people are becoming more active. As society continues to inundate us with more opportunities in the workplace, local community, and the like, it is imperative to realize what’s the most integral part to our mode of transport – our feet. Often times we neglect our feet until we are prompted by a painful stimuli that requires that we give them attention. On a daily basis, we should employ habits that promote healthy, happy feet. There are essentially 7 things that I consider important in maintaining good foot health. These tips are both effective and practical in keeping your feet healthy. - Dr. Rondrick Williamson

1. Inspect your feet daily. Be aware of any areas of redness, blistering, corns or calluses. These are early signs that can forecast problems in the near future. 2. Choose shoes that fit properly and are comfortable. Make sure you choose comfort over fashion. Many foot problems can be caused by tight fitting shoes and shoes that have lost their structural integrity. Tight fitting shoes can lead to common conditions such as blisters, bunions and hammertoes. Know when to replace your shoes. Some obvious signs of needed shoe replacement are excessive wear along the sole and the innersole. 3. Ladies, limit the time spent in high heeled shoes. High heels were never meant to be an everyday shoe. Consequences include corns, calluses, bunion deformities and hammertoes. 4. Keep your feet moisturized. Apply a moisturizer daily to keep feet soft and supple. Poorly moisturized skin can lead to conditions such as xerosis and fissuring. 5. Proper nail care is key. Inspect your nails and take action to ensure that they remain at a healthy length. Toenails should not be cut too short as this can lead to the formation of ingrown toenails. It’s advisable to trim your nails straight across.

ASK DR. RON Q: What exactly are flat feet and is there any type of procedure that can correct this condition? - Cynthia A: Cynthia, “flat feet” is a medical term that describes when the arch of the foot is collapsed allowing the whole sole of the foot to be in contact with the ground. Commons symptoms include pain in the bottom of the foot often times extending into the ankle area. Therapy includes shoe modification, pain medications and arch supports. Surgical correction is typically the last option. Q: What are ways to treat toenail fungus? - Chantell A: Chantell, toenail fungal infection is a common condition. There are several treatment options that range from topical preparations, oral tablets, and laser treatment. All are effective modalities in treating this condition but ultimately depends on the severity of the condition. Q: Hello Doc! I have clients that have lost toenails and would like to add artificial nails. However, what type glue is SAFE and strong enough to hold when directly applied to the nail bed? - Tara A: Hello Tara, most nail glues on the market today are equally effective. For individuals who are considering artificial nails who have a portion of the old nail remaining, Keryflex is a healthy alternative. Contact your local podiatrist or dermatologist if you are interested in Keryflex. Q: Can you get bunions from wearing high heel shoes or is it hereditary. – Ashley A: Ashley, bunions can both be acquired and inherited. Long term wear of high heeled shoes and pointed toed shoes can cause a bunion to develop. Family history of bunion deformity places one at increased risk also. The Mental Health-Friendly Workplace

M

ental illnesses are common and these conditions can affect anyone, regardless of age, culture, race, gender, ethnicity, economic status, or location. Mental illnesses are surprisingly common; they affect almost every family in America. Mental health problems are health conditions involving changes in thinking, mood, or behavior. Mental health and mental illness can be pictured as two points on a continuum with a range of conditions in between. When these conditions are more serious, they are referred to as mental illnesses and include depression, anxiety disorders, childhood and adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and other diagnosable illnesses that most often benefit from treatment and support. The good news is that effective treatments are available and people recover from mental illnesses. Many people with mental illnesses work with therapists, counselors, peers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers, often in combination with some of the most advanced medicines ever developed. They also use self-help strategies and community support groups. It is estimated that about one-third of those with mental illnesses are employed. There is a very good chance that you, and every employee in your business, know someone who has a mental illness. Past studies show, nearly a quarter of the U.S. workforce (28 million workers ages 18-54) experiences a mental or substance abuse disorder. Based on a study from “The Impact of Mental Disorders on Work, Pfizer Facts series” found that the most prevalent illnesses in the workplace are alcohol abuse/dependence (9 percent of workers); major depression (8 percent); and social anxiety disorder (7 percent). Further, 71 percent of workers with mental illnesses have never sought help from a medical or mental health specialist for their symptoms. The good news is that, mental illnesses are manageable with treatment, which in most cases allows people to return to satisfactory, functioning lives.
