on the lux scene

photo:John Stephens | styling: Brian Short

Luxury is a status, a feeling or comfort that is experienced in different ways by many people. It’s something that can’t be determined by monetary, class or race. It’s all about one’s personal interpretation of “LUX”. This issue, THE LUX LIST, celebrates several individuals in the areas of STYLE, CULTURE, CONSCIENCE and BUSINESS. Some of them you may know and some of them you may not. The introduction of THE LUX LIST is an opportunity to learn about the people in your community that are making a difference. These individuals have stretched me in areas that I had no idea I could be stretched and this issue is truly a collaborative effort. All involved played a vital role in bringing its contents to life.

| EDITORS NOTE |

On March 14th I asked 11 people to meet me to be photographed for a magazine that many of them had little knowledge of. Regardless, they arrived one by one in good spirit and ready to do what I asked. They had no idea that hours prior to their arrival, mass chaos had erupted. However, everyone fell into place and followed my lead and I thank you! I dedicate this issue to GOD, Brian Short, John Stephens, Scoobie West, Darcy Harris, Ellen Harden, Shehawnee Prescod, JeNika P Thomas, Stephanie Fleitas, Yoeshi Roberts, Peggy Still, Gino Emanuels, Okeeba Jubalo, Ken Barber, Elisabeth Omilami, and Brenda Massie. Thank you for your patience. Lentheus Chaney - Publisher/Editor - Lentheus@UrbanLuxMagazine.com 8884461269

SCOOBIE WEST

MAKEUP AR T I SAN

Scoobie West has worked for high caliber clients

such as Essence Magazine, WE television network, Badgley Mischka and of course, Urban Lux Magazine. You only get to work for clients such as those when you’ve proven that you are indeed a top make-up artist. Scoobie first showcased his ability to create beautiful looks in college by doing the make-up for models in a campus fashion show. Though the looks he created were a hit on the runway, it wasn’t until a few years later when he did the make-up for a friend’s wedding that he really realized that he had a remarkable eye for make-up artistry. His friend raved about the work he did on TheKnot.com and with the pictures to prove his uncanny ability, brides started calling in droves. “My design style for doing hair and makeup is classically simple, sometimes with an unexpected twist! . . I believe in maximizing the beauty of the person so that they’re memorable in a good way! H. S. West, Hair and Makeup is about being an original, not a reproduction.” Scoobie’s work differs from other makeup artists because of his keen application techniques and attention to detail. ELLEN HARDEN

DESIGN DIVA

Ellen Harden grew up in the tiny town of Eastman,

GA, which at the time had just one stoplight.

Ellen always dreamed of going places, so

in 1999, she left Eastman and headed to Atlanta where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Atlanta

and then on to New York where

she earned a Master’s in Communication Design from the prestigious Pratt Institute. Lucky for Ellen, she was able to return to her first love – the city that was big enough to give her inspiring work and small enough to be southern at heart, Atlanta Georgia. Ellen’s work has been noted and published in Logo Lounge which “selects works of quality, timeliness, and an inspirational nature.” She was also recognized as “design’s best and brightest” by Graphic Design USA for her work with The St. Joe Company’s WindMark Beach series. “I’m about my client not my ego. My worked is focused on the client’s needs and bringing the best creative solutions to that need…This not about conceptual fluff it’s about design that helps drive results and design that speaks to my clients audience… It’s about design that matters.” “My work is simple and smart. It is sophisticated and classic; and there is thought, passion and a smile behind every project I touch.” eldesignfirm.com

Art, music, literature, dance and theatre are the exploration and expression of who we are and how we feel about it. JOHN STEPHENS BEYOND T HE PHOTOGRAPH For over 9 years John Stephens, (JAS Photo), has been photographing Atlanta’s fashion & commercial sectors. JAS Photo’s commitment to push the level of creativity is seen in his attention to detail & relentless pursuit to execute his client’s vision from start to finish. “As an artist, I would describe myself as unconventional! I don’t mind breaking a few rules to push myself to achieve a higher level of creativity. At best, my life resides outside of the box! At the end of the day, the experience that people get when they work with me is just as important as the final product. Going beyond the photograph is my goal!” John believes strongly in giving back to the community by partnering with non-profit organizations to provide a higher level of awareness through visual arts. “I would like for my work to evoke a feeling of curiosity and excitement about what’s beyond the surface. The person viewing my work should seek the hidden essence and beauty that lives behind the image which gives it substance.” jasphotoonline.com

UNCU T /UNEDI TED Straight from the mouth of artist Okeeba Jubalo.

“My work is timeless, honest and direct. I feel like REAL ART is like a swift kick in ass or a slap in the face! Real work should inspire the onlooker to feel something that strikes them at their core. I am not a wordy artist, unless I am writing a book, song or poem. When it comes to my visual art I pretty much let the work speak for itself. Hang an OKEEBA JUBALO painting in your home and you are guaranteed to get more ass . . .” “I have always been an artist. I realized early in life that it was either be an artist or a career criminal. The seedy side of life has always moved my spirit. That is why my art is so edgy and raw…I show the public what they will only see on the wrong side of the tracks.” “As long as my audience is able to walk away with the true sense of freedom and life, my art lives and breathes. There is no fear…just power and strength. It’s like walking down the street and coming face to face with an unchained 175lb Rottweiler…then you will realize how precious life really is. When people witness work by OKEEBA JUBALO…their minds, hearts & souls change. Really I am not conceited…I am just convinced.”

CONSCIENCE

T

here is a story about a monkey that liked bananas. Hold on stay with me now. This monkey would eat bananas all day and all night long. He would even go into the villagers crops and eat so many of their bananas that they were losing entire crops. All this because of the voracious appetite of this gentle monkey!

| CONSCIENCE |

| THE LUX LIST |

After placing the bananas into the hole, cover the hole with just enough drying mud so that he will have to reach into a small hole just big enough for his hand and one banana.” “Make sure he can look into the hole and see all the ripe bananas there. He will reach into the hole to grab a banana and I guarantee, you will catch your monkey.” That night the villagers did just as their elder asked and the next morning they were awakened by the loudest screaming monkey noise they had ever heard. For yes, the monkey had come in the night and found the hole with the sweet smelling bananas and into the hole he stuck his hand grabbing one of the bananas tightly. When he tried to pull out his hand from the hole, it would not come out. The elder knew the monkey well. He could not pull out the banana and be free unless he opened his hand and let the banana go to run to freedom. The monkey refused to release the prize. So, there he was screaming, jumping and fighting to get that banana as the villagers grabbed him and ran him away from their land. What do we hold onto in life that keeps us from being free? Is it money, material things, careers or our relationships? In my job as Executive Director of Hosea Feed The Hungry and Homeless, I have to open my hand each and every day and release something to someone that has a value to me. It may have even been something that I wanted to keep. It is only when you will open your hand children and release what God has blessed you with that He can give you more. It is a law, a natural law, that when you give you will receive. This is not just a cliché. God gives his seed to the sower and it is a life of giving that brings about true peace. By doing all you can to make life better for someone else and putting your own needs second or third, you will find that your own needs will also be met. What legacy will you leave for generations to come? Only what you do for others will last the test of time because you will live on in the hearts and souls of those you helped. So make a life not just about living but give and it will be given to you, pressed down, shaken together and running over. Think generationally and give back for the future. You are building a testimony, a memorial for those who will come after you to say, “Look what she/he has wrought for us, here is a testimony to what love must really mean that they would sacrifice their lives for us.”

The villagers thought long and hard about how they could capture the monkey so he wouldn’t be any more trouble. They went to see the wisest woman in the village, Samna, to tell her of their dilemma. Straightaway, Samna gave them a solution. “Place a stack of bananas into a hole in the tree”, she said. “Make them really ripe so that the monkey, (who had a keen sense of smell) could smell the banana scent all the way Elisabeth Omilami - Executive Director into his home.

GINO EMANUELS SNEAKERHEAD

Gino Emanuels was born in the small third-world country

of Suriname. He grew up in Miramar, Florida and moved to Atlanta after undergrad school to start his career in marketing . A few years later Gino decided to make a career change after waking up everyday hating the direction in which his life was going. Now a second year law student at Georgia State University College of Law, Gino is also the founder of the non-profit organization, Uplifting Soles, which he created with the simple goal of suppying children in need with shoes. Donations of new and gently worn shoes are provided to local families in need and to local shelters that house families with children. With a vision to one day branch out and help children in other parts of the world, Uplifting Soles is starting off by making a difference in Atlanta. Moving from a third-world country, growing up poor, watching his family fall apart, knowing what it feels like to fall asleep with his stomach growling from hunger and never wanting to experience that ever again motivated Gino to get on the track of giving back. “Giving back has given me a greater purpose in life and living to make a difference in the lives of others is rewarding in ways that money could never be... I can only hope to inspire others by the way I live my own life. When I’m gone, I want people to remember me not for me, but rather for the change I’ve made in the lives of others.”

STEPHANIE FLEITAS

GREY GOOSE EVENT MANAGERStephanie Fleitas speaks with ULM. ULM: Tell us a little about Stephanie Fleitas. SF: I’m an independent thinker preferring to go against the grain in a somewhat unconventional quest for knowledge and expression. My favorite past time is contemplating human existence. I seek constant intellectual stimulation, forming new opinions and stubbornly traveling my way regardless of what other people think. I love trying new things and I frequently seek out novelty and change. I want leave my mark on the world where it counts. In the hearts of many. ULM: What professional accomplishments you are proud of? SF: Leaving my family and friends in Miami to move to Atlanta so that I could further my career is something that I feel is a great accomplishment. I moved from a place I lived my whole life to start completely fresh in a city where I didn’t know anyone.

I am especially proud that I’ve always remained focused, true to myself and never lost sight

of where I want to and will be in life. ULM: Would you consider this your “Dream Job”? SF: At this point in my life, I would have to say yes. It allows me to be creative, meet new people and affords me the opportunity to work from home. Most importantly, I have a team that supports and trusts my judgment, which is a big deal for me as I am a true free spirit. ULM: What tips or lessons would share with others pursuing a career in your industry? SF: In any career you pursue, you should learn the industry and do your homework so you are knowledgeable and able to speak effectively. Know your strengths and weakness and work on them consistently. You must have an open mind to learning new things and remember that in order to lead, you must know how to follow. It goes hand in hand. In the industry I’m in, it’s all about building/maintaining relationships.

Being an extrovert is essential.

sugar and salt RAW,REAL, RELATIONSHIP ADVICE FROM ZACH & OKEEBA Z & O, I have a couple of questions! “When are we as men, gonna learn that a simple, but heartfelt compliment to our women will go a long way in the relationship? Stir that with “damn baby, seeing you in that dress makes me want to lift it above your waste for a while” . . . whispered in her ear. Secondly, when will both men and women learn that we are supposed to be each other’s best

|

friends? -G. Bradley, Charleston, SC ZACH Answer-1: G, it’s human nature for us to start to take things for granted once we get use to them. Think about when you were a child how that new toy you got became your favorite for a while and before you knew it, it was tucked away in a toy box or left outside and forgotten. As men, it is easy to understand how we do that to our women. Hopefully, we remember that someone else could be giving our woman those “heartfelt compliments”. What men need to understand is that women like to hear that they are beautiful and sexy from time to time. Keep that in mind before someone else steals your woman’s time. ZACH Answer-2: To answer your second question, I feel if you are dating, then you should be close friends. The both of you need to have other friends. It’s also important to have some healthy time apart to keep your relationship healthy. OKEEBA Answer-1: True...paying attention to the small details is very important. Some dudes are just plain dumb and there is no away around that. Pay attention to the details about your woman and that will take you far. Do something small and honest for her...if she is a GOOD WOMAN she will appreciate it. OKEEBA Answer-2: It’s important for your mate to be your #1 runner. Not to say that you have to hang with your man or woman 24 hours a day, but you need to be able to trust that person with your life. Honestly, smart people realize this and they are fine in their relationships. A fool is going to be a fool... “Is six years too long to date the same man, that is still saying he is not ready for marriage”- Concerned BFF, Louisville, KY ZACH- Answer: CONCERNED, it depends on how long the two of you have been talking about marriage and I you are currently living like you’re married. If you have not been dating long, then he may not be ready to marry YOU. He just needs more time. Marriage is a big step to some men and it makes it hard if we feel we are being force into it with time tables and ultimatums. Try this, sit him down and say. “Look, I love you and I want to marry you, do you want to marry me?”

If his answer is YES, ask him

“When?” and hope he doesn’t say a date that is far into the future. Hopefully you love him enough to wait until he is ready. If you are currently living like you are married, he really does not have any

“Should I purchase a house with my girlfriend?” W. R., Los Angeles, CA ZACH Answer: W.R., that’s a very major step in a relationship. Are you ready to make a thirty year commitment to this person? You obviously are with your mortgage company. Of course I know most people don’t live in a house for that long. Just remember you are making a big investment in more than real estate! OKEEBA Answer: Why the hell are you thinking about making a move as a grown man while thinking like a boy? Grown men do not have girlfriends...if you are a grown man then make grown man moves. If she is wife material then make her your wife. If you are looking to test the waters, just live in an apartment for six months and see how that works. Be a man or be a boy.

rebuttal because all that is missing is a ceremony and a piece of paper. If he still says “he’s not ready” either you leave or enjoy being his “Common-Law Wife”. OKEEBA- Answer: CONFUSED . . . CONCERNED, Hell yeah six years is too long! It doesn’t take a man six years to decide if he wants to be with you on a long term level. When a man is hungry for food he does what he has to for him to eat. The same thing applies when he wants a woman to be his wife. Stop wasting your time and move the hell on!
