Natural Perceptions

A

n “Independent Artist” must retain purpose and vision. When the two are present, the Power to choose is beautiful and priceless. Independent Artist harness and apply their Power in every aspect of Life. When one lives their life as an Independent Artist, they are free of external influences when it comes to creating their masterpiece. Truly, they possess a “Natural Perception” toward their vision and the vision of others. An “Aware Artist” maintains a vision/goal with focused intent. Being an Independent Artist suggest you are an individual who consistently follows their inner guidance. There is a difference in knowing the Path of an “Independent Artist” and walking the Path. When one decides to become an Independent Artist, they are not easily influenced by peer pressure nor do they seek acceptance externally. Certainly, one is an “Independent Artist” when they choose to wear their hair in its natural state. This individual is transcending society’s ideas that are immersed in consciousness through the mass media. They understand that real value dwells within. With this in mind, they choose their hairstyles comprehending that they are investing in “SELF.” Therefore, they make their decisions based from their personal philosophy and simultaneously respect the views and beliefs of others. Alicia is an “Independent Artist” who decided to wear her hair in its natural state nine months ago and prior to her transitioning she could not recall the last time she experienced her hair in its natural state. The journey of being natural revealed to her that she did not retain total acceptance of who she is. Additionally,

she awakened to the truth that she was neglecting an aspect of her being. Surprisingly, her transition stirred up mixed emotions among her family and friends. Indeed, they communicated their disapproval of her choice of hairstyle. However, Alicia decided not to conform to the thoughts of others but rise to the energy of the “Independent Artist.” Thus, she has entered the World of Freedom. Eleanor Pinkney is also an Independent Hair Artist who owns a Natural Hair Studio “Natural Perceptions.” The name for the Hair Studio arose through her journey of acceptance and surrender to “Self.” Wearing her hair in its natural state ushered in a freedom that she declares as “indescribable.” This experience of freedom compels her to educate and assist clients in accepting themselves and others. Countless clients express their concern of external acceptance and fear of job lost. She gently replies, “You have to listen and follow your voice transcending all external voices.” Her vision for humanity is “Accept and Surrender” to who you are. Indeed, by executing this you will rise to the energy of an “Independent Artist.” To rise to the energy of an “Independent Artist” you have to practice self-love. Love does not judge and it is not selective. Love is a state of being. Love is who you are. Love is expressed in innumerable ways so acceptance is key to the Art of Living. Therefore, it does not matter how you wear your hair as long as you make your decision void of the influence of others. It is your Masterpiece to create however, you choose. Remember, Independent Artists maintain a “Natural Perception.’ by: TIA AIKENS july / august 2011 | UrbanLuxMagazine.com | 11

She designed beaded bracelets with a variety of colored stones and accented them with crystals, gold, and silver to make unique designs and started a trend of wearing multiple bracelets to create a SLEEVE of jewelry stacked around the arm. Lena continues to create new designs to embrace mixing a variety of colors and styles together to bring even more attention to your SLEEVE!

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure. ~ Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist)

But, whatever it is, at one time or another, we’ve all dreamed of launching the next multimillion dollar business out of our basement, garage or kitchen. And in today’s unpredictable, roller-coaster economy, having a side hustle might not be such a bad thing to help bridge the gap between paychecks. Seems like a wise person once said: “Always have a hustle!” I take that to heart because what it really means is have a backup plan and don’t put all your eggs in one basket. There’s nothing wrong with supplementing your cash flow with a little extra and often unexpected money on the side. The question is how to be consistent with your hustle without burning your candle at both ends. Answer: it’s hard, but it can be done. Let’s decode the secrets to the successful side hustle.

REMEMBER YOU’VE GOT A FULL-TIME JOB!

Some of us are lucky enough to still have a full-time job in the current economy, so cash flow from a side hustle is really icing on the cake. But you’ve always got to remember to dance with the person that brought you to the party; put your employer first. That’s your bread and butter, so don’t jeopardize your income. Keep your day job and your hustle separate. Make sure there’s not conflict of interest and continue to meet your employer’s expectations.

Plan, Plan, Plan One of the biggest secrets to a successful side hustle is planning. This is definitely not a gig you can wing your way through if you want to see financial results. Use your nights and weekends to develop a business plan, identify your customers, map out a marketing plan and stick to it. Having a roadmap with weekly goals can really eliminate the stress we sometimes feel while sitting at our 9 to 5, feeling like our hustle is suffering. There’s no better feeling than putting a check mark next to a task you’ve accomplished.

BUILD A TEAM Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it certainly wasn’t built by one man. In order to keep your hustle successful, you have to surround yourself with people willing to help you meet your goals. These are often family members or close friends who have the same interests and passions as you do. Building a team also means learning how to delegate tasks that complement everyone’s strengths.

|

e all have an entrepreneurial streak in us. How many of us have made a few extra bucks offering brownies, sweet potato pies or chocolate chip cookies for sale at work or after church? Some of us are selling makeup, scented candles and jewelry on the side, keeping some extra dollars flowing into that checking account.

So many times I see people who have had a side hustle for years and years and years and don’t ever seem to improve their financial situation. They’re stuck in a rut. Part of the issue is they get so comfortable serving the same customers who only purchase one or two items a month, that it becomes a habit. The most successful entrepreneurs know how to take strategic risks. You have to think outside the box and you have to strategize about taking your hustle to the next level. Who are your next 10 customers? How can you establish minimum monthly revenues? What is your competitor doing that you’re not?

PERSONALIZE YOUR BRAND The one thing that a customer might like about your product is that personal touch you offer. Everyone wants to feel special and everyone wants to feel like they’re purchasing something made especially for them. Because we side hustlers are often working on a small scale, we have the ability to brand and personalize everything we create. Take advantage of that, and give your customers something to remember.

IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD

Building a multi-million dollar business out of your garage is a lofty goal, and there are people that have achieved that goal. We’ve all seen them on TV shopping channels, talk shows or even the news. But remember, success comes in small steps. Set smaller, measurable goals for yourself along the way and celebrate them. Something as simple as finding two new customers this week is worth celebrating. Don’t be so hard on yourself, and be ready to take the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s all part of the package.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AVAILABLE RESOURCES

Tapping into your rainy day account to fund your side hustle isn’t always a good look. So do your research and find out what financial programs you can qualify for to take your hustle to the next level. President Barack Obama recently announced the launch of the “Startup America Partnership” aimed at increasing national investments in start-up and small businesses. Get details about this program and tons of information on small business startups, business plans and financial resources at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s website at http://www.sba.gov. So, keep perfecting that secret recipe, keep pushing those candles and keep selling that makeup. The side hustle is definitely in style. And, who knows, you could be the next big thing just waiting to happen. by: IAN SMITH july / august 2011 | UrbanLuxMagazine.com | 29

Breathing heavily into the phone receiver after an afternoon run (her body is amazing), D. Woods sounds more excited than she did when she screeched in sheer joy from “Making The Band.” This time, it’s from an altogether alternate place. A perfect combination of excited entertainer, frustrated artist and femme fatale, she’s now daring anybody to go against the grain – “WoodGrane” that is.

cover

First introduced nationally as one fifth of Bad Boy Records’ quintet, Danity Kane, the stage-stealing prima donna is on a one-woman mission to reintroduce herself. Classically trained in dance, stage performance, and music with impressive credentials from NYU’s “Tisch School of the Arts” to match, this around the way girl refuses to create another backup plan. She’s now playing for keeps.

|

D

on’t call it a comeback; she’s been here for years, and though she doesn’t consider herself an industry veteran, per se, D. Woods undoubtedly knows that she’s a loaded gun, ready to shoot.

“I am tired of playing by the rules” WoodGrane Entertainment is D. Woods’ newest and dearest project to date. A self-started and directed record label, and Woods’ answer to the humdrum hex that she feels she’s been forced into, simultaneously, the label is no temporary fix, but more like a twelve-step program. “I’m tired of waiting on people to allow me to be the “great” that I have trained to be all my life. Protocol hasn’t served me well and I am tired of playing by the rules.” With this declaration has come her first self-supporting project and the labels premiere presentation, “The Gray Area”, a ten song EP. Explaining that the concept of the “gray area” was born out of hearing the phrase so many times in regards to situations where she could find no clarity, in true D. Woods style, she made the idea work for herself. The project, that has admittingly taken her several years and experiences to complete, is an agglomeration of lessons in love, life and liberty. From the starry-eyed anthem for believers “Foolish Dreamer”, to the inspiring “Wonder Woman”, the girl has guts and tells her story, gloriously. All things given, D. Woods is on the brink of her independence and she loves the thought of it. What she loves even more is that no box has ever been able or will be able to hold her, thus not even having a definition for the powerful word of the month. “What is independence,” she asks, rhetorically. “I haven’t figured it out yet. I’m still defining it, but at the very root of it, it’s just being happy.” A girly giggle ends the interview. She’s excited because she just had an epiphany. “I have to go create. Ciao!”

The fully-stocked bar can be the happy hour start to your evening and the nightcap conclusion to your day. The hotel’s Tudor House restaurant keeps the theme of historical re-invention. The Art Deco bars which once served as the checkin and concierge counters in the 1930s, are modernized with a Miami feel. Chef Geoffrey Zakarian presides over the culinary concept bringing his experience as chef of two New York hot spots – The Lambs Club and The National – and his recognition as a cookbook author and Food Network personality. The Tudor House offers modern-American fare in a casual beach café setting. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant also offers take-away meals for the quick jaunt to the beach just one block away. South Beach is famous for nightlife and Collins Avenue is the heart of it. Dream South Beach fulfills the image at Highbar, its ‘70s-inspired lounge on top of the Tudor Hotel building. ts location has stylish significance. Its foundation is built on 1930s glamour. Seeped in history, yet modern in design, Dream South Beach is much more than Miami’s newest hotel. It’s a chic hideaway with worldly appeal. Poised behind the former Versace Mansion, Dream South Beach is a merging of two Art Deco hotels originally designed in 1939 – the Palmer House and Tudor Hotel. A multi-million dollar renovation joined these historic icons on Collins Avenue to create a “new golden age of Miami sophistication.” The design and the vibe is an eclectic mix – Art Deco meets French-Moroccan, the glamour of the ‘30s marries the ‘70s scene. But through this seemingly unorthodox relationship there is one common thread – a serenity that gave the hotel its dream of a name. From the guestrooms to the common areas, hotelier Vikram Chatwal wanted to create a “dream state” for his guests and at the same time maintain the spirit of the hotel’s location. In quintessential Chatwal style, from his Manhattan boutique properties to an exotic Bangkok retreat, Chatwal’s hotels invoke the atmosphere of a city, all the while focusing on world-class accommodations. Dream South Beach is no exception. Serenity can begin in the hotel’s Ayurvedic spa and continue in the guestrooms outfitted with furniture and lighting fixtures to create this dream state. Q. My girl feels like we have to be in constant contact. She text me constantly at work and when I go out I cannot enjoy myself because she’s calling non-stop with the “who, what, where, and how.” She hates that I will not answer and will reply by text only, but it is embarrassing in front of my friends. What do I do? - Overcalled

Luv is the Answer to All your Relationship Questions. Luv Advice from Real People by: ZACHARY DAVIS & TIA AIKENS

Q. Why is it hard for me to stay faithful in my relationship even if there are not any “major” issues? - Lisa Thomas - Brooklyn, Ny TIA: This is such a delicious question. Let us establish the fact that you are always the one common denominator in all your relationships. You have to explore “Self ” when evaluating your current results. With this is mind, investigate why you are being unfaithful to yourself. Probe and see if you are being loyal and non-judgmental. Most likely you can become more faithful and loyal thus shifting your approach to your relationships. When this occurs, you will begin to mirror faithfulness and loyalty in your encounters. If the other party is not demonstrating loyalty, one of these two will occur: (1) They will drift away from the relationship and release you naturally and easily or (2) You decide that you are worthy of more and move on. You can only control your thoughts, words, and actions. Begin to declare impeccable thoughts and words and I promise you that your actions will be impeccable too. Affirm daily “You are Faithful.” This simple technique will shift your consciousness and you will become more faithful. Remember that thoughts become things. Therefore, it is essential that you gain greater awareness of your thoughts, words, and actions because you are contributing these three to every relationship you enter.

ZACH: First off your too old to worry about what your friends think, but I understand how you feel. There are obviously some trust issues, and you need to figure out where they are coming from. Did you do anything to cause her to be suspicious? If not she may be the one not to be trusted. Many times guilt shows in how the guilty treat you, she may be worried about what you are doing because of what she does. This could be because of her past too, so you need to let her know you are her future. You need to set boundaries of how many times she can call, and what the calls/text should be in regards to. Let her know if she keeps calling, the two of you could soon be disconnected. TIA: Establishing boundaries is imperative if you yearn for this behavior to cease. Let us not focus on your friend who is consistently calling you. We have to address why you are allowing this to occur in “Your Life.” Are you a people pleaser? Do you avoid confrontation regularly? The “Truth” is people can only do to you what you allow them to do. You have the power to change the situation in an instant by taking your Power back. You are the main character in creating your life so release the supporting role you have been playing. Become the “Star” in your experiences by establishing boundaries for your life. “If you find your hear and now intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options: remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it totally.” –Eckhart Tolle. Whatever you decide release all negativity and make your decision from a state of greater awareness and insight. Become aware of your Creation. Q. How does one find/capture and sustains “True Love”? What steps do you suggest? - Marcella O’Neal- Atlanta, Ga TIA: Inside earthen vessels are beautiful treasures. There is never a need to look outside of you to experience unconditional love. If one is attempting to capture love externally, they will discover it is impossible. Finding love is an inside job. External love will never sustain you. However, Eternal love will because this is who you are “Love” and its located within you. Truly, you have to fall in love with yourself unconditionally. Experience the totality of your being, experience your wholeness, and share this with another with no expectations. Begin to affirm: “I Love Myself ”; “I Truly Like Myself.” Affirming this is front of a mirror or recording it on a voice recorder will benefit you greatly. There are countless books/audios targeted for Personal Growth Development these resources will assist you in your journey of learning to Love Self. As you become unconditional love, you will attract it. “Love is a state of Being. Your Love is not outside; it is deep within you. You can never lose it, and it cannot leave you” Eckhart Tolle.

ZACH: To put it simple, monogamy is not for everyone and a committed relationship is not what you really want. You may enjoy the comfort of an established relationship, but obviously one person cannot keep you in your comfort zone. You first need to answer why you cannot be faithful. Is it sexual, emotional, or fear of commitment? Determine “what” causes you to want to be unfaithful, and then you will know “why.” The one thing I do suggest is honesty with everyone ZACH: True love is happiness. You must be happy with who you are and you deal with and give them the option of moving forward. who you are becoming, before searching for “true love” from another. If a committed role is not for you, then do not play the part. Honestly, there is no such thing as “true love” to me, instead search for “unconditional love.” That love does not change regardless of your faults. Someone who always believes that your “good outweighs your bad.” Submit your LUX luv questions to Now once you have found this person the best way to sustain a healthy LuxLuv@urbanluxmagazine.com relationship is to give 110% and hope the other person gives that in return.
