PORTRAIT, ON THE COVER: BRIE WILLIAMS.

Having lived in a city where it would sometimes snow into the month of May, I am a big fan of warm weather. I used to take Charlotte’s climate for granted. Never again. It’s pretty amazing to experience all four seasons like we do. And here we are now: seventy-degree temperatures, sunshine, and plenty of verdant greenery and blooms. With spring in the air, al fresco leisure has begun. For me, this means evening meals out on the loggia. From florals and flatware to table linens and more, dreaming up an exquisite tablescape is no longer a figment of my imagination but a design I can put into action. And don’t forget about trips to the flower market. They may not live long, but fresh-cut flowers make a lasting impression. It’s all about creating an ambiance, which our annual outdoor living issue celebrates. Even though Charlotte’s spring game is pretty idyllic, it’s nice to escape to other exotic landscapes. Whether it’s a thirty-minute drive north to Lake Norman or a short flight to West Palm Beach, Florida, a change of scenery is always revitalizing. From spring breaker to perennial vacation goer, take a deep breath and relax, because here comes the sun!

ORGANIC MATTER

Founded in 1986, American design-house favorite Arhaus has been producing sustainable, highly crafted, and heirloom quality furnishings for more than two decades. Whether it’s lighting or case goods, furniture or decor, quality is its number one priority. Inspired by the Greek Isles, the new Malawi Outdoor Lighting Collection features a vertical-weave design crafted from all-weather wicker and a stainless-steel frame. The results are organic yet sophisticated, elegant yet dimensional. arhaus.com.

THE RESISTANCE

New York–based textile design studio Eskayel has debuted a new collection of fabrics that marks its first-ever performance and outdoor line. Water repellant and stain-resistant weaves are available in some of Eskayel’s most popular patterns, including Dynasty in Indigo, Domenica in Notte and Bamboo Stripe, Up for Anything, and Bali Stripe. Dedicated to sustainable innovation and lasting beauty, all fabrics are digitally printed in Italy in small batches to reduce waste. eskayel.com.

STACKING the DECK

In an homage to esteemed designer Gabriella Crespi, Copenhagen furniture designer Gubi has released the Bohemian 72 Collection. Inspired by Crespi’s drawings and pieces designed for private clients, the collection brings together Crespi’s interest in natural materials, her fascination with stacked, sculptural forms, and her curiosity about Eastern cultures and philosophies. Designers at Gubi have used Crespi’s drawings from 1972 to create an extraordinary line of rattan furnishings that includes a lounge chair, a three-seater sofa, an ottoman, and a floor lamp. By deciding to use repeating layers of vertically coiled rattan vines, which was visionary for the time, Crespi created a distinctive interpretation on lounge furniture that proves to be timeless. dwr.com.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

The Spring and Summer Collection from Designers Guild is brimming with dynamic and vibrant modern prints and weaves, resulting in a truly sophisticated but practical outdoor collection. Savine includes original marbleized and textured prints that are new to Designers Guild, as well as iconic favorites that are familiar and treasured. Dotted with stripes and florals, offerings range from deep and bold hues to go-with-everything neutrals in calming patterns that help relax the mind and body while sitting poolside or catching a cool breeze on the patio. thebakerloocollection.com.

UNDER MY UMBRELLA

Photographs by Slim Aarons contain vivid colors so brilliantly captured in their mundane existence that they stop viewers in their tracks. For the second year, Santa Barbara Designs will be honoring Aarons’ work with a capsule collection of umbrellas inspired by three of his lesser-known works: St. Tropez Beach, Poolside In Sotogrande, and Scone Madam. Made with high-performance, marine-grade, weather-tested materials intended to withstand the most extreme weather, Santa Barbara umbrellas are not just another pretty face— though that they are, as well. The American Icon Collection Part II features bright colors, fanciful scallops, classic combinations, and a few simple forms. santabarbaradesigns.com.

MAUI WOWIE

Founded in 2006 by two childhood friends, outdoor furniture house Kannoa set out to build a company based on four pillars: design, functionality, durability, and harmony. Offering all their products in twenty brilliant colors that seem at-home in the Miami-based design house, Kannoa’s creative vision puts people first. The new ergonomically designed Maui Leisure Chair is a statement in its form but delivers on comfort as well. On its own or paired with the cleverly designed ottoman that slips underneath when not in use, the Maui features modern lines with a clean look and offers the durability of all-weather material and a powder-coated aluminum frame. casualtrade.com.

Progress Lighting’s Design Series has debuted a new collection by designer Jeffrey Alan Marks called the Point Dume Collection. Hailing from Southern California, Marks infuses his designs with casual livability and a cool sense of tailored design, which is evident in the new collection. “Lighting is the ultimate marriage of form and function and the most transformative element in a design project,” he says. The Point Dume Collection weaves both industrial and artisanal styles in a range of forms from coastal to urban and is inspired by his two favorite places: Point Dume, California, and East Hampton, New York. Mixing metal reminiscent of corrugated rooflines with traditional lines and natural materials, the collection is simultaneously original and comfortingly familiar. progresslighting.com.

GARDEN PARTY

After opening its first retail store in the United States last year, British homewares brand OKA will be launching its first outdoor line stateside this spring. The company was founded by three women, Annabel Astor, Sue Jones, and Lucinda Waterhouse, and based on a mission to make the worldwide treasure trove of home goods more accessible to the masses. The aesthetic is rich in textures and patterns with timeless profiles that are elegant yet easygoing. OKA’s newest outdoor collection is inspired by verdant blooming English gardens that beckon us to stay awhile and enjoy nature. With twisted metal in the shape of vines and featuring a distressed finish, pieces from the Viticcio Metal Garden Collection speak directly to the garden inspiration. oka.com.

FULL BLOOM

A child of the South, designer Deborah Rhodes knows the ins and outs of gracious entertaining and the welcoming effect of a beautifully set tabletop. After achieving major success in the New York fashion scene in the ’80s and ’90s, Rhodes’ straw hat lines shifted sharply to hand-crafted straw placemat and tabletop decor, where she found a deep passion. In her new spring collection, Rhodes explores the embellished side of nature, taking natural forms and adding depth and dimension with design. Careful attention is paid to every detail in the new line, ensuring a final look that is pulled together and thoughtful. deborahrhodes.com.

STONE-FACED

BEES KNEES

Home accessories designer Joanna Buchanan’s passion for luxe decor began when she was a child sifting through her great-grandmother’s vintage ornament collections. Today, she produces elegant, one-of-akind accessories, ornaments, decor, and gifts with chic graphic patterns and modern colors. Her butterfly and bees melamine dinnerware collection is designed to bring the garden into your home. The hand-painted design is replicated on every piece and made to withstand years of use. Buchanan loved the idea of a super elevated melamine offering. “Inspired by our butterfly and bee napkin rings, this beautiful watercolor effect reminds me of a vintage plate that my mother had. It has so many colors in the pattern, so you can really pick out any color and emphasize that when you are tablescaping.” circainteriors.com

Synonymous with its namesake, this richly joyous yellow tone with notes of mustard and marmalade is the embodiment of delight. A bright burst of optimism bathing all it touches in a golden warmth, it is auspiciously cheerful, carefree, and contented. Multifaceted in its congeniality, it adds an earthy comfort to chic modernity, a playful polish to bohemian flair, and a fresh novelty to traditional layers and antiquities. Incandescent with a range of pairings from navy and neutrals to periwinkle and pastels to earthy sage and jewel-toned emerald, marigold is surprisingly versatile in its vivacity.

DE SIGN BOARD

Charlotte native Eric Ennis believes a solid foundation for interior design begins with the details. “It can start with the architecture of the room and making sure there is something visually interesting that creates structure to the space,” says the designer. “Or it can be as simple as a wallpaper or molding detail to give the room some depth.” But what he loves most about designing homes for his clients is incorporating details and accents that not only provide interest but also meaning to a home. “I like when clients have items that have meaning or purpose to them. I feel like rooms should reflect the person who lives there and have a nice balance between new and old.” For Ennis, many times that means incorporating artwork, family heirlooms, or antiques into the interior design. The coupling of collected items with new, more modern pieces results in a curated aesthetic overall, which is precisely Ennis’ calling card. 1. Tenbrooke Candleholders / $545 / arteriorshome.com 2. ESCAPE SET ON MEXICO’S SUN-SOAKED RIVIERA MAYA, ROSEWOOD MAYAKOBA BLENDS LOCAL CULTURE AND THE REGION’S LUSH ECOSYSTEM INTO EVERY EXPERIENCE.

The Rosewood features a mile of white-sand beach, but most of the luxe resort is set back in a forest of mangroves. Its suites are steps away from world-class restaurants and bars, but their subtle limestone and wood exteriors are tucked quietly into the verdant landscape. This destination is designed to be the ultimate secluded getaway without sacrificing a single amenity. Upon arrival at Rosewood Mayakoba, guests are escorted in electric boats to spacious suites, where they’re given a chilled mezcal cocktail and introduced to their personal butlers. The property’s 129 rooms are all simply decorated with warm wood tones and floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto private docks featuring plunge pools overlooking the clear freshwater lagoon or the sparkling Caribbean. After a $20 million redesign by New York–based studio Bando x Seidel Meersseman, handcrafted furnishings and ceramics made by local artisans were incorporated throughout the resort. From the suites’ open-air rain showers and oversized garden tubs to the colonial hacienda-inspired decor of Zapote, the resort’s most popular restaurant, every aspect of Rosewood Mayakoba is designed to highlight the region’s culture—both past and present. There’s no better place to see that blend than at its Sense spa, which was built into an island around a turquoise cenote. Paths wind through the jungle to tranquil treatment rooms and an authentic Mayan sweat lodge. Guests can request an energy healing session with the resort’s resident shaman at this relaxing enclave or simply meditate by the palm-lined serenity pool. With its eight restaurants, six pools, and hammockdotted beach, there’s plenty to explore at Rosewood Mayakoba, and each guest is provided a bicycle that’s ideal for easy rides down the resort’s 2.5 miles of trails and boardwalks. 32

HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM

Be sure to take at least one ride over to the adults-only beachside area, where three pools are surrounded by plush lounge chairs. Here, a vintage food truck serves impossibly fresh ceviche, and there’s a daily Champagne O’Clock celebration featuring complimentary glasses for everyone. The truck is called Aquí Me Quedo—Spanish for “I’m Staying Here”—which is the perfect name because, after any time at Rosewood Mayakoba, that’s exactly what you’ll want to do. u

WATER'S CALLING AFTER SELLING HER HOME ON BALD HEAD ISLAND, DESIGNER LISA SHERRY WANTED ANOTHER GETAWAY HOME, BUT THIS TIME HER JOURNEY TOOK HER TO THE LAKE. TEXT BY BLAKE MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIE WILLIAMS

The original front door featured stained glass and scrolled iron details, all of which Sherry removed and replaced with clean glass doors. She styled the entryway with a Moroccan runner, a vintage metal bookshelf, and a coat rack full of her favorite hats. LISA SHERRY LOVED HER HOME ON BALD HEAD Island. Tucked away underneath large oak trees strewn with Spanish moss and situated by a small waterway on the interior of the North Carolina island, the home was quiet, relaxing, and the ultimate escape. But after twelve years on the island, the designer decided to sell the home in hopes of streamlining her life. It wasn’t long, though, before Sherry desired another escape from the city that wasn't a four-hour drive and ferry ride away. “I’d spent some time

on Lake Norman and thought to myself, ‘What if I found something on the lake instead of the beach,’” she says. “I also thought, ‘How cool would it be to have something only thirty minutes away from my house?’” The wheels were set in motion, and Sherry began hunting for the perfect lakefront home, a task that came with its own set of challenges. Lack of inventory for waterfront lots meant she would either need to raze an existing home or renovate it. But having renovated hundreds of homes, HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 41

LEFT: The former kitchen featured dark cherry cabinetry and was completely closed off from the rest of the living room. Sherry removed the walls, opened up the space, and then remodeled the kitchen with white cabinetry accented with reclaimed wood shelving and a plaster backsplash.

Sherry was not fazed by the idea. “I started looking and found this property on the water,” says Sherry of the stereotypical circa-1990s home with dark, dated finishes and a closed-off floor plan. “I knew I would want to renovate whatever I bought, so I was really looking for the right style of home and the right color roof and just the right location. I wanted to emulate Bald Head Island as much as possible.” She closed on the home in late 2020 and started renovating in February 2021, which first meant tearing down several interior walls to open up the living spaces. “The kitchen was so small and closed off, so I removed the walls separating it from the living area,” she says. As well, Sherry transformed the fourth bedroom into an adjacent breakfast nook. The arches that framed the windows in the living room and essentially impaired the views of the lake were removed and replaced with ten-foot slider doors that immediately brightened and opened up the living spaces and allowed for a seamless transition from inside to out. Comfortable, casual, and ultimately relaxing were the tenets of Sherry’s design for the home. “I call my primary residence my city house, and this is my lake house,” she says. “The thread between the two is HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 43

that I wanted this to be sophisticated but also a place you want to put your feet up and relax and unwind. A little looser, a little more free feeling here.” That casual, cozy vibe began with a neutral color palette on the main living space and a darker, new neutral in the downstairs entertainment and lounge area. The yin and yang of the home’s design is modern and elevated, giving visitors a unique experience in each space of the home. Sherry’s calling card of bringing interest to a home by way of various textures and materials is woven throughout. The entire home was originally outfitted with plantation shutters, thus closing off the interior from the stunning water views. After removing the shutters throughout the home, Sherry installed an all-white neutral color palette layered with textured linen, chunky Moroccan rugs, and organic driftwood, all of which are balanced with more modern elements in the lighting and found objects and accessories. The Arteriors light fixture to the left of the newly remodeled and contemporary plaster fireplace doubles as a sculptural piece of art. Sherry designed a built-in floating bench, which she outfitted with a plush cushion and custom pillows for a quiet place to read with a lake view. “I love sitting there with a cup of coffee and a good book,” she says. Downstairs, the vibe is decidedly different but ultimately the same in its

sophisticated and comfortable approach, a hallmark of Sherry’s design. The dark, moody aesthetic complements the sleek, modern custom bar that she added and features black open shelving layered with vintage pieces and bottles of alcohol, which glimmer when the dim lighting hits. Though Sherry misses her quiet Bald Head Island beach home, she’s found the change from Carolina coast to lakefront invigorating. “I need water in my life; it’s very calming to me,” she says of the move. “It’s so healing, and at this time in my life, I needed the simplicity of something close, something easy, something cozy and welcoming. This has been life-changing for me.” u

KEN PURSLEY AND BRONWYN FORD HAD BEEN IN THIS position countless times before: A client comes to them with an existing, dated house desperately in need of a renovation. In this case, the home was located in Wellington, Florida, a well-known equestrian community just west of West Palm Beach. And the homeowners were Charlotte residents who had worked with Pursley and Ford on three of their previous residences. “There was never a question about who we’d want to do this renovation,” says the homeowner. “Ken has had a hand in everything we’ve ever done with all of our homes. He gets what I want without me having to tell him, and then he’s able to put that into beautiful drawings.”

The homeowner had been patiently looking for a home in the equestrian community for nearly three years, never quite finding a property that worked. “I wanted a courtyard home that’s centered around a pool,” she says. As luck would have it, the homeowner’s friend caught wind of a home going on the market just two doors down from her. The house was a watered-down Spanish colonial with a classic red clay roof, a complementary stucco facade, oversized cornices, and faux ornamentation. “It was so dated and beige, and it had absolutely no character,” Ford says. “There was a lot of ridiculous exterior detail work that had been added to make it look like it had integrity, but inside it was very vanilla.” Despite its obvious HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 53

flaws, the homeowner was smitten with the layout. “I knew that I could bring this home to Ken and that he would be able to make this the home I wanted,” she says. “We wanted to humanize the architecture a bit,” Pursley says, “so we started by taking away and cleaning things up so that we could rebuild it.” The ornate exterior architectural details were stripped away, leaving behind a blank slate. A concrete stain on the roof tile, new bronze windows, and a fresh coat of white paint completely transformed the facade. “We wanted to soften the palette and make it not so jarring,” Pursley explains. Inside, much of the same transformation took place with the removal of tray ceilings, crown molding, and other architectural elements that didn’t align with the more modern interior design the homeowner 54

desired. “We basically gutted the entire house,” Pursley says. “We took the shell and reconfigured it inside to make it make more sense from a floor plan, flow, and spatial sequence.” Originally, all of the rooms blended together, so there was little delineation between spaces. “We wanted to create more definition of rooms to have a more logical layout that’s livable but also functional.” Interior ceiling heights were dropped to nine feet in many spaces to soften the rooms. Some living areas were reimagined and given new life, such as a screened-in porch that morphed into a home office. The original formal dining room was open to the living room, so Pursley closed it off with stunning upholstered sliding doors, dropped the ceiling height, and turned it into a quiet sitting room. “We

were trying to make spaces within spaces, which makes it a little bit cozier,” Pursley explains. The one-time living room was transformed into a modern, open kitchen with a beautiful view to the outside courtyard and pool area. “If a home isn’t working well, it’s oftentimes the kitchen that’s the issue,” says the architect of taking the former kitchen and turning it into a support space that houses the scullery, pantry, laundry, and a dog wash. “The original living room

had a sightline into this beautiful backyard. I find it more powerful to pull back from the view and look across the room. We took advantage of what was there and let the kitchen morph to the architecture.” Ford took cues from the streamlined architecture to create a relaxed, contemporary interior design that feels comfortable yet elegant. “We wanted to simplify everything,” Ford says. “We wanted the interiors to feel soft and serene. house feels like sand and beach glass and driftwood. That’s what gives it warmth. Even though it’s not on the beach, it feels very natural and has that vibe to it.” The home is a departure from the homeowners’ conventional Colonial farmhouse in Charlotte, which features more traditional furnishings and antiques. “When you do a second home, there’s a relaxation of expectations,” Pursley says. “For them, it was this idea of a resort storyline—they wanted to stay somewhere that was kind of cool and a little crisp but still comfortable when they weren’t in Charlotte. It’s more like a vacation with the way they wanted us to approach the interiors.” The outdoor living did not go untouched either. While the pool shape did not change, Pursley and Ford replaced the pool tile and plaster and refinished the surrounding 60

hardscape with a more soothing, complementary palette. Like the interior, the team redesigned the outdoor living area with spaces within spaces, such as a hedged alcove that features an intimate sitting area with a fireplace. While the homeowner patiently waited for several years before finally finding a home that fit her family’s needs, she admits it was worth the wait. “The arrangement of this home was pretty perfect and exactly what we wanted,” she says. “Ken and Bronwyn are just so talented. I never thought about using someone else to do this project. They’re really good at interpreting and understanding a client’s needs. And they just knew that we wanted this home to be comfortable and relaxing, like a resort getaway, and they achieved that throughout.” u

Pursley reimagined the front entry by installing a custom-designed door that pivots to enter. “I think the entry is an opportunity to set the tone and leave a mental impression on guests.” OPPOSITE: To accommodate large gatherings, Ford installed an eleven-footlong reclaimed wood dining table by Clubcu. DEBORDIEU COLONY IS ONE OF the oldest beachside communities on the East Coast. With more than 800 acres of wildlife preserve cradling portions of South Carolina’s most quiet and beautiful beaches, it’s a gem of a vacation spot for many in the South and beyond. Adele Dillon grew up summering in DeBordieu and has continued the tradition with her husband and children, visiting the family home inherited from her parents. On one such trip, the Dillons discovered that a long-admired home nearby was on the market, and they jumped at the chance to purchase it and create their own home away from home. “Beautifully located, the property overlooks the golf course and adjacent wildlife preserve, with proximity to the ocean as well as the family home Adele and her sisters inherited,” explains designer Heather Smith of Circa Interiors & Antiques, who, alongside MK Boykin, was hired to update the newly purchased home. “The home’s modern design and appealing open floor plan was perfectly suited for the homeowners’ vision of larger-scaled furnishings and minimal decor.” But the home had become a rental in 2006 and needed some significant updating. A longtime

client of Circa and feeling a bit overwhelmed at the prospect, Dillon decided that enlisting their help would be key to creating the California-modern vibe they envisioned. “After reaching out to Circa and speaking to Heather, we were introduced to MK, and it felt like the perfect fit,” Dillon says. “We liked the way MK was not pushy, and it became a collaborative effort. Our style is very similar, so it felt like I was working with a good friend.” “Adele was definitely capable of furnishing the home on her own, but it did need some updating, and she wanted our help coming up with a cohesive plan,” Smith adds. “Our aesthetics are so well aligned; it was a perfect fit for us to take this on and help her streamline the process.” Wanting to steer clear of overly beachy aesthetics and traditional coastal decor, the group agreed that a casual, comfortable, and modern look was easily achievable in combination with a bright and airy foundation. So stained cypress ceilings, pine doors, oak floors, and dark poplar casings were swapped out for bleached wood and driftwood-hued natural materials. Peach walls were whitewashed, and windows were blown out and opened up. “The house looked like it hadn’t been touched since the ’70s, and it almost had a Miami Vice vibe,” Boykin recalls. “However, there is a circular motif that was repeated throughout the home that we decided to keep and use to our advantage when designing. I try to retain as much charm and character to older homes as possible, and I’m glad we worked with the quirks instead of taking them out.”

Over the next eighteen months, Smith and Boykin worked closely with Dillon to transform the home with texture, natural elements, and an abundance of light. “As designers, it is our job to push clients a little outside of their comfort zone and hopefully come together to create something that feels like home to them but also embodies a well-thought-out design,” Smith says. “Harmonious design starts with communication between designer and homeowner; it is the whole foundation to success.” With Covid causing unprecedented delays in materials and labor, and his own office closed, Dillon’s husband, Mark, “an artist, athlete, musician, woodworker, and true renaissance man,” according to Smith, had the unique opportunity to move into the house and work on all the renovations himself. Never having to wait or rely on outside trades, the house came together quickly, with Mark Dillon working on projects like painting,

refinishing floors, plumbing, lighting, ceiling treatments in several of the rooms, and a brand-new kitchen. “Mark was incredible about taking measurements and sending photographs and sketches,” Boykin says. “But to achieve proper scale and proportions without being on-site was still tricky. It took a little bit of extra communication and a little more teamwork and trust. In the end, it turned out exactly as we envisioned, and everyone was thrilled.” “We double and triple checked measurements and specifications throughout the process, but the whole effect never translates completely through drawings or photos,” Smith adds. “I was blown away by the overall scale of the space—she has palm trees in the family room that are at least fourteen feet tall—and loved the way the oversized custom pieces we designed filled it up.” HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM 69

The furniture drove the scale of the space, and a white Verellen sectional led the way. “We found an amazing white sectional at the Verellen after-market attic sale,” Smith explains. “The scale and style of that piece really set the tone for the rest of the interior, which is all open to that room.” While in High Point, they found an over-scaled piece of art for the foyer, along with the perfect bench. Huge palm pots were added for plants, and a few of Dillon’s favorite antiques from Circa rounded out the scheme: a bleached pine table for the entry and a painted Dutch chest for the powder room. “After visiting Verellen with MK, we knew the direction we wanted to go in for the home,” Dillon says. “Since the rooms are so large, we needed very large pieces. Otherwise, things would get lost or look too busy. Each piece needed to make an impact.” As the big pieces came together, accessories took their cues from laid-back but cohesive California-style homes with pareddown decor and minimal frills. “Everything has a function or purpose, is low-maintenance, and can easily be moved around throughout the home,” Smith says. “Pillows and throws are washable, ottomans and side tables are layered for functionality,

and sculptural pots can stand on their own or graciously hold a variety of cuttings from the tropical landscape.” Dillon is particularly fond of her husband’s office. “We designed Mark’s desk ourselves, and then Mark built the desk and bench seat. It’s a cozy, quiet space to retreat to. The breakfast room is a close second, as Mark built the kitchen table, and the chandelier is a showstopper!” Smith adds that her favorite is the dining room. “I love the simplicity and drama of the room. Each item is like a piece of sculpture: the fluted table base fabricated by Mark, the curvaceous chairs, the sinuous Parisian light fixture, the chiseled Belgian clay pot, and the hand-spun brass charger mounted over the fireplace. Mark painstakingly planked the cathedral ceiling for more texture and recessed light behind the crown molding, which enhances the dimension at night with a moody glow.” The transformation is nothing short of stunning. The whole home is a study in seeing past what’s right in front of you and, with vision, a little sweat equity, and ingenuity, creating spaces that fit your lifestyle and allow for plenty of room to breathe. u

renovations, embracing a holistic inspiration of well-being that merges chic style with timeless serenity. This mantra guided her well as she embarked on a personal transformation, moving from North Carolina to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “Moving was a leap of faith, and the journey reminded me of the experience my clients go through as we design new spaces together,” Buresh says. “Blank canvases can be challenging, but an open heart and mind along with the ability to go with the flow can create joy and lead to a design that is the best reflection of you.”

Anne Buresh has always seen the world through a creative lens. She first discovered her love of design from her grandmother, an interior designer from eastern North Carolina. And her fascination only flourished as she learned more about the craft behind creating beautiful interiors. Since she launched her firm, Anne Buresh Interior Design, in 2008, she’s collaborated with clients, vendors, and tradespeople and has developed a keen attention to detail built around an eye for artistic culture and a love of travel. For more than a decade, Buresh has focused on collaborations for a wide range of projects, from new builds to large-scale

When Buresh was invited to decorate a space for the Western Design Conference, she was eager to marry her Southern roots with the outdoorsy flair of the West. “The relationships I’ve formed working from the East Coast to Jackson have opened my eyes to many new perspectives that I incorporate into my designs. I design for a well-traveled life that celebrates a global perspective, community, and the outdoors. I wanted to take a different direction than what is traditionally seen in Jackson. With many years of experience designing for Southern elegance, I formed a design that would have a fresh take on the Western environment at the Western Design Conference,” Buresh says. Buresh’s initial inspiration for the room began with the scenic hand-painted wallpaper of delicate, airy trees designed by Colette Cosentino in partnership with Schumacher. “The wallpaper was not only a nod to my Southern heritage but was also reminiscent of the vastness of the environment in Wyoming’s Teton Mountains and the grounding sensation of Jackson.” Working with a blank canvas and ten-foot walls, Buresh covered the entire surface with the mural. Her intention was to immerse people in the space, the scale encouraging guests to relax, escape, and take root in the beauty of the outdoors. from Paris, were added to the room. A custom-designed coffee table by Kauffman & Co. brought a touch of Charlotte craftsmanship to the aesthetic. Anne Buresh Interior Design partnered with Anne Neilson Fine Art out of Charlotte on a sixty-by-sixty-inch black-and-white photo of a jet taking flight by world-renowned Austrian photographer Josef Hoflehner, which was placed over the sofa to celebrate the unifying concept of world travel. “We intended a conscious design of a relaxing, worldly traveled space that felt comfortable and lived in,” Buresh says. “We love blending our Charlotte Southern roots with the West.” u

Most real estate markets across the country witnessed highly motivated buyer demand over the past year; Charlotte and the surrounding areas were no exception. The Carolinas are ranked among the top destinations for homebuyers relocating from higher-cost markets in the Northeast and West Coast who are searching for affordability, accessibility, and quality of life. But Charlotte’s desirability is nothing new; it was what motivated Helen Adams to establish her namesake company in 1975. Adams was born with a knack for real estate in her blood, passed on from her father and great grandfather. 2021. They’re poised to carry that same momentum into 2022. While the numbers are impressive, the firm is most pleased with one figure: 76 percent of last year’s business conducted with repeat and referral clients is a testament to their dedication to serving with integrity and a hallmark of their reputation of client care. “Steady growth over time has given us the footprint and backing to serve our clients across the greater Charlotte area while supporting our agents with robust staffing and technology,” says Chief Marketing Officer Rebecca Adams Starrs. “And the vote of confidence from established clients and their referrals is a high and humbling honor.” In their newest effort to best serve clients, Helen Adams Realty introduced its HOMEsolutions platform in February, an all-in-one program offering clients easy access to all buying and selling options in one convenient location. “With the help of an agent, HOMEsolutions enables clients to buy and sell on their terms,” Starrs says. “Our goal is to simplify the process while giving our clients options best suited to their particular needs.” For buyers, HOMEsolutions includes an in-house mortgage marketplace to compare terms and rates, a cash-offer solution to help clients retain a competitive edge in stiff competition, and a Homeownership Accelerator for those without access to large down payments. For sellers, established programs help owners finance projects to get homes in top market-ready shape, allow them to cash in on instant offers from iBuyers, and maximize offers to receive highest market value. “Our innovation and cutting-edge technology enable us to stay ahead of the rapidly changing needs of the real estate market, helping our agents deliver on our promise of total client satisfaction,” Starrs says. “We’re proud to be family owned, local, and small, but still able to offer the extensive resources of a big firm.” u

Exceptional Outdoor EXPERIENCES THE STONE MAN DETAILS 2022’S HOTTEST OUTDOOR LIVING TRENDS.

As the weather warms and Covid-related restrictions begin to ease, people are looking to reconnect with friends and family in a place safe for entertaining where they can disconnect from technology and stress and tune in to the outdoors. Alan Lochridge, owner of The Stone Man, has seen a recent uptick in the construction and installation of covered outdoor areas, fireplaces, and kitchens in many of Charlotte’s best neighborhoods. “Our company inherently understands the benefits of spending quality time with loved ones, and we help our clients fully utilize their outdoor spaces to gather with family and friends,” Lochridge says. “With a keen eye to detail and by staying abreast of the current trends, we transform natural spaces into exceptional outdoor experiences.” 80

Hardscape project trends in 2022 are focused on creating tranquil and comfortable outdoor living spaces, providing the utmost in sustainability, functionality, and year-long accessibility. Aesthetically, trends are leaning toward natural earth tones, although cool, soothing grays remain a popular choice. Monochromatic color schemes in stone selections and larger square or rectangular cuts create a modern, streamlined look. Fire pits and fire troughs are in high demand, with gas-burning options outpacing traditional ones. These fire features lend a coziness to outdoor spaces while also serving as a focal point in the comprehensive design, enticing guests to gather and enjoy extended seasons on the patio.

Covered structures and outdoor kitchens remain popular choices for homeowners looking to expand and enhance the livable square footage of their homes. Whether installing a pergola, a cabana, a porch, or a patio, covered structures as part of a total backyard makeover add definition and privacy to the space. They also provide protection from the elements, significantly expanding the functionality and accessibility to outdoor living despite fluctuations in temperature or weather. Likewise, climate control options, such as heaters and fans, are readily available for covered structures, allowing families to enjoy these outdoor spaces year-round. Outdoor kitchens, varying in size from simple grill areas to fully functional and outfitted cooking hubs with stainless grills, pizza ovens, refrigerators, and sinks, allow homeowners to customize their culinary experiences and entertaining options to best suit their needs. Natural stone caps are trending, replacing more traditional granite countertops, and integrated seating bars provide guests ample space to sit, eat, and congregate in the natural serenity of the outdoors. When it comes to return on investment, outdoor home improvements are second only to kitchen and bath remodels, and homeowners in the current environment are eager to invest, spending anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of their home value on outdoor living projects. Real estate trends prove that homes sell faster when outdoor living is done well. Owners can expect to recoup at least 70 percent of their investment on firepits, and expertly crafted, fully functional outdoor kitchens can significantly increase overall home values. “Clearly, outdoor living renovations are more than an investment in the home—they are also an investment in the future and in the homeowner’s lifestyle,” Lochridge says. “This year’s biggest trends are all about maximizing and modernizing outdoor spaces.” u

IN-HOUSE CAMPOUT BY BETH CONANT-KEIM

WHEN DESIGNING A HOME, THE GUEST ROOM IS OFTEN THE VERY LAST SPACE TO TACKLE.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEKENZIE LOLI.

Sometimes it’s used as an oversized closet full of items you think you may need someday. It might be a home for mismatched pieces. Perhaps it’s where you put that treadmill. But, no matter how it’s used, the guest room probably needs some love. When I had my first home, my very stylish and very particular grandmother paid me a visit. She wrote a sweet thank-you note at the end of her stay, expressing how beautiful everything

was, but she also left me a list of the things she felt the guest room needed. I never forgot her advice. This job was meant to be a phase-two project, but with the holidays approaching, it was put on the front burner. When designing this space, we needed to be creative with the budget, as we had not held back on the rest of the house. Paint does wonders. It took a bit of convincing, but we chose a dark wall color for a dramatic effect. With all of the delicate, dappled light filtering in, the finished look won her over. Don’t be afraid of a dark color.

84

HOMEDESIGNDECORMAG.COM

I was off to a good start. My next selections were an accent chair and a very cool (and inexpensive) bed. And because we had saved a bit on those pieces, I ordered a size-appropriate leather-bound upholstered side table. A room should always have that one special piece. We were still on budget. I then visited two of my favorite local shops, Slate Interiors and Cotswold Marketplace, to find the remaining items to fill the room: a small, framed butterfly art piece, a long vintage bed pillow, a simple rug to ground the space, accent bedding, and lighting. A day of shopping locally is always an adventure, as I am creating and designing on the fly, but I find outstanding pieces. I think I inherited this knack from my grandmother. She was the very best at the hunt. This space is now a cohesive, interesting room that is pulled together beautifully and complements the entire home’s collected feel. Your guests may camp out and never leave! u

YOUR KITCHEN SINK: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

IT’S EASY TO IMAGINE ADDING A NEW STYLISH SINK TO YOUR KITCHEN—PERHAPS A MODERN STAINLESS BEAUTY OR THE APRON-FRONT FARMHOUSE SINK OF YOUR DREAMS. But style is only one of six factors you should consider when choosing a new sink. Would it cross your mind to think about how you’ll use your sink or the importance of selecting the right material? To help narrow the field of hundreds of possible sink options, read on for a definitive guide to choosing the right product for your needs. 88

SIZE: The size you want may not be the size your cabinet can handle. Selecting a sink starts with measuring the base cabinet. If you have a thirty-six-inch cabinet, you must install a thirtysix-inch sink or smaller. Also, give some thought to how you use the area around your sink. A wider sink is great for washing a high volume of dishes, but it takes up valuable countertop space. You’ll also need to determine whether a six-, eight-, nine-, or ten-inch depth works within your setup. SHAPE: Consider how you use the sink. Do you wash large

pans? Do you often need to share the sink with someone else? Thinking through how the space is used enables you to choose

a single or double bowl and determine the size of the bowls needed to accommodate your task list. STRUCTURE: Maybe you want an apron-front farmhouse sink, but your cabinet structure or countertop cannot support it. Whether you choose an undermount, drop-in, farmhouse, or dual-mount sink, you’ll need to understand a variety of nuanced structural support features for each choice. SUBSTANCE: One of the most enjoyable aspects of choosing a sink is selecting the material: stainless steel, quartz, or fireclay. There are advantages to each and factors to consider. Looking for an ultramodern statement? Stainless steel may be right for you. Worried about burn marks from hot pots or scratches and dents? Then consider quartz, which offers unbelievable impermeability, hardness, and stain resistance. Most interested in a traditional farmhouse look? Then fireclay may be right for you. STRENGTH: Materials offer differing levels of sturdiness. Even within certain material choices, there are variations. For example, stainless steel comes in different gauges; the lower the gauge, the thicker the metal. Both fireclay and quartz are tough options perfect for busy families.

“STYLE IS ONLY ONE OF SIX FACTORS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A NEW SINK.”

SOUND: Who knew sound was a component to consider when purchasing a sink? If you would like to control the clang and clatter of flatware as you wash it, consider a quartz or fireclay sink, or seek out a sink supplier like ELKAY, which adds sound-deadening pads under its stainless-steel sinks.

The kitchen sink is one of the most used and abused pieces of equipment in your home. Educate yourself and choose wisely. Visit elkay.com/Learning Center/Sink Selection Tool to help narrow the choices and find the ideal sink for you. u

SPOTLIGHT IN CONVERSATION: ASHLYNN BROWNING + KATY MIXON HODGES TAYLOR Through June 10 hodgestaylor.com This series of exhibitions is about starting a conversation between two artists and the viewer. Hodges Taylor invited an artist partner to ask another artist who inspires them to exhibit their work together. In Conversation captures the exchange between two practicing artists and illuminates the parallels they recognize in their work and beyond. An opening reception with the artists will be held on April 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit can be viewed online or Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment.

HARVEY B. GANTT CENTER Through June 26 ganttcenter.org The Harvey B. Gantt Center has primarily built its collection through works gifted to the institution. Over the decades, John and Vivian Hewitt collected works from artists near and far, culminating in an array of artwork by nineteenth- and twentieth-century masters. FuturePresent embodies this legacy through the presentation of works that are pioneering in their concept. Featured artists push the boundaries of the traditional canvas and explore landscapes and societal themes through a contemporary lens. This exhibition visualizes the future of art.

AT THE ROOT SOZO GALLERY April 13–May 28 sozogallery.net At the Root is a group exhibition featuring the work of four contemporary artists: Jill Hotchkiss, Ana Maria Mariani, Michela Martello, and Kristen van Diggelen Sloan. This exhibition will act as a visual investigation into spirituality and intimacy, with emphasis on nature, transcendence, and introspection. Opening reception on Wednesday, April 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
