Towards Sustainable Renewable Energy Investment and Deployment Trade-offs and Opportunities With Water Resources and the Environment United Nations This toolkit aims at increasing renewable energy investments and improving cross-sectoral planning in decision-making processes. The Renewable Energy “Hard Talk” events held in Bosnia and Herzegovina (2018) and Serbia (2019) included a Nexus component for this purpose. Substantively, the approach used drew from the nexus assessment work under the ECE Water Convention and evolved into a list of criteria for sustainable renewable energy policies and investment initiatives that bring multiple benefits across sectors and countries while minimizing trade-offs, including with other water uses and environment protection.

This publication responds to challenges and aims to elucidate the status of implementation of energy efficiency standards in buildings and deployment of appropriate technologies, and to identify good policy practices and replicable solutions together with general recommendations and priority actions.

Best Practice Guidance for Effective Methane Management in the Oil and Gas Sector Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and Mitigation United Nations This publication provides guidance for developing and implementing effective monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) practices, as well as for mitigating methane emissions, from the oil and gas sector. In its discussion on MRV and mitigation opportunities, it is meant to serve as a resource for a broad audience, including owners and operators of oil and gas facilities and policymakers at all levels of government. It is intentionally “principles-based”, recognizing that conditions vary greatly across oil and gas facilities, and that legal, political and institutional aspects differ by jurisdictions.

The Least Developed Countries Report 2019

The Present and Future of External Development Finance Old Dependence, New Challenges United Nations This report provides a comprehensive source of socio-economic analysis and data on the world’s most impoverished countries. It calls for least developed countries to ensure that external finance from all sources is directed to national development priorities, and urges the international community to scale up its support toward this goal. Persistent shortfalls in domestic savings in these countries make them heavily dependent on external finance. They are most dependent on official development assistance. Such assistance is essential for them to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and escape dependence.

Human Development Report 2019

Beyond Income, Beyond Averages, Beyond Today Inequalities in Human Development in the 21st Century United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Inequalities in human development are not just about disparities in income and wealth. They cannot be accounted for simply by using summary measures of inequality that focus on a single dimension. And they will shape the prospects of people in the next century. This report explores inequalities by going beyond income, beyond averages and beyond today. It asks what forms of inequality matter and what drives them, recognizing that pernicious inequalities are generally better thought of as a symptom of broader problems in a society and economy. It focuses on policies that can simultaneously help nations to grow their economies, improve human development and reduce inequality.

Industrial Development Report 2020 Industrializing in the Digital Age

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) The emergence and diffusion of advanced digital production (ADP) technologies clustered around the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is radically altering the nature of manufacturing production, and increasingly blurring the boundaries between physical and digital production systems. The significant requirements of ADP technologies are raising questions on whether industrialization is still a feasible or even a desirable strategy to achieve economic development. This publication contributes to this debate by presenting fresh analytical and empirical evidence on the future of industrialization in the context of a technological paradigm shift.

Findings and Lessons Learned from the Work on Equitable Access to Water and Sanitation under the Protocol on Water and Health in the Pan-European Region United Nations This publication capitalizes on the findings and lessons learned so far from the work on equitable access to water and sanitation under the UNECE/ WHO Regional Office for Europe Protocol on Water and Health. It features the experiences of 11 countries from the pan-European region that established baseline measures of their situation with regard to equitable access to water and sanitation. This was achieved through multi-stakeholders’ self-assessment processes by looking at geographical disparities, specific barriers faced by vulnerable and marginalized groups, affordability concerns, and the governance framework.

Generation Equality

Women’s Rights in Review 2020 UN-Women 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action. It also marks the first time that progress on the implementation of the Platform is reviewed in light of the 2030 Agenda. This report therefore takes an integrated approach to reporting on progress, gaps and challenges related to the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights across six dimensions that link the Platform’s critical areas of concern and the Sustainable Development Goals. It finds that there have been important gains since Beijing in 1995, but that progress towards gender equality has stalled and even reversed in some areas. Across the globe women’s movements, energized by young feminists work to advance the rights of women and girls that are linked to the achievement of economic, social and environmental justice for all. World Survey on the Role of Women in Development 2019 Why Addressing Women’s Income and Time Poverty Matters for Sustainable Development UN-Women This edition focuses on the ways in which the nexus of time and income poverty shapes or constraints the lives of women. It argues that addressing this double bind is critical to achieve sustainable development, particularly in low-income contexts, and presents an integrated policy agenda for doing so. The report finds large gender gaps in extreme poverty rates especially between the ages of 25 and 34, coinciding with the phase in the life course of family formation and child-rearing, during which women and their households face increased expenses associated with having children, while also experiencing constraints on the time they have available for engaging in paid work. Foreign Direct Investment and Sustainable Development in International Investment Governance United Nations Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a principal means of financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. FDI’s potential contributions to sustainable development can only be realized if the right conditions and policies are in place and if both the quantity and quality of FDI to, from, and within the region increase. This requires not only identifying and prioritizing FDI projects in key sustainable development sectors - such as renewable energy, education, health, water and sanitation, etc. - but also developing and operationalizing FDI policies and legal and regulatory frameworks at national and international levels that maximize the sustainable development potential of FDI in local economies. This publication explores the latter.

United Nations Framework Classification for Resources: Case Studies United Nations The UNFC is a project-based classification and management system applicable to all energy and mineral resource projects including renewable energy, anthropogenic resource projects as well as injection projects for geological storage. Managing energy and raw material resources sustainably is paramount to all stakeholders such as governments, companies and investors. This has to be viewed along with the Paris Climate Accord, which seeks low-carbon pathways in the appropriate developmental strategies. Resource management requires information on the resource base, understanding factors that are responsible for progressing the resources to production, adequate framework conditions set by regulators and society and the enterprising capacity. Case studies demonstrate how UNFC can be used for sustainable resource management.
