Books Report of the Secretary-General on the Work of the Organization

Report of the UN Economist Network for the UN 75th Anniversary

It highlights how the UN Secretariat translates resources into impact. It covers nine sections: (i) promotion of sustained economic growth and sustainable development; (ii) maintenance of international peace and security; (iii) development in Africa; (iv) RE A D N O promotion of human rights; ONLINE W (v) effective coordination of humanitarian assistance; (vi) promotion of international justice and law; (vii) disarmament; (viii) drug control, crime prevention and combating international terrorism; and (ix) effective functioning of the Organization. It also includes information on the UN response to COVID-19 (coronavirus).

The devastating impacts of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) crisis have further diminished prospects for achieving the SDGs, with the greatest adverse impacts falling on countries and people least able to protect themselves, and already at greatest risk of being left behind. Consideration is RE A D N given to the interlinkages among O ONLINE W trends and how these trends can be fundamentally shaped by policy so that their individual and collective impacts support sustainable development in its various dimensions. It concludes by identifying a range of policies that could effectively shift the megatrends’ evolution and establish the principles that should guide countries’ choice of systems.

Trade and Development Report 2020 This year’s report analyses the economic impact of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) global pandemic and responses that could be effective and inclusive. It examines different recovery scenarios and highlights the danger of a lost decade, addresses immediate RE A D N difficulties facing developing O ONLINE W countries, as well as some of the underlying conditions that, if left unaddressed, will prevent a better recovery.

Protecting Children from Violence in the Time of COVID-19 As COVID-19 upends daily lives and communities, the concern is mounting that violence against children may increase. Children with a history of RE A D N abuse may find themselves O ONLINE W even more vulnerable, both at home and online and may experience more frequent and severe acts of violence. The pandemic could result in loss of parental care due to death, illness, or separation, thereby placing children at heightened risk for violence, neglect, and exploitation.
