THE GIVE ISSUE ON OUR COVER

Model | Peppi | Photog | Woof Creative Photography |

Welcome to the last issue of the year—GIVE. Shew, thank gherkins! I can take a vacay now, right? We’ve got some fantastic examples of people who don’t know how to do anything but give in this one. They’re awesome (check pages 6 and 8). We also have our very first thoughtful gift guide—because why give anything if it’s not full of thoughts. Some people (understandably) don’t know where to start, so we wanted to help! I’d love be able to give, I’m all about it! However, things get taken from me before I get a chance to make the gesture. Bones, beds, treats (direct from mom’s hand to my mouth—intercepted!), even my gosh darned food allotment for the day—everything—gets taken, stolen, swiped from under my nose. It happens so fast, sometimes it literally makes me dizzy. Living with two spry, sneaky, stinky sisters doesn’t give this ‘ol guy much of a chance to be a gentleman or offer anyone anything. “Hey, do you want the last few ... Oh. They’re already gone, oh okay.” It’s actually really about survival for me at this point. At least now I have a man friend in the house who gets it. See that handsome chap at the bottom of the page, Blue? Yah, he’s interning with us for a minute. He’s not old and wonkish like I am, but worse! He has a broken back and can’t move very well. The two sneaks I was talking about earlier ... they take advantage of both of us now with our sludge-like reflexes, and they take whatever they want (when the boss isn’t looking). The boss got us all bones the other day and Lulu (Head of Grounds Security here at Unleash) somehow ended up with three out of four of them in her bed. She looked very happy, however Blue didn’t. What I wouldn’t do to help that guy out. I’d give him the back off my back if I could. I just wish the sisters would learn to think about others a smidge. I shouldn’t complain. It’s been a great year. I’m still here and I still have control of my bowels—that’s truly the best gift I could ask for at my age. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday filled with delicious foods, lots of good people, and the ability to give—what you’d like when you’d like. Please wish that for me, too. Hoscokal, (that’s Turkish) GEORGE

The 2017 THOUGHTFUL GIFT GUIDE for People and Pets IS HERE! People seem to be seeking more authenticity in their lives lately. It feels good to be mindful of that and to help each other out by not adding to the emotional and physical crud we exchange—it bogs and clogs and makes life feel heavy at times. We wanted to help you with some out-of-the box ideas for creative and thoughtful giving for the upcoming season! Maybe you know a true animal lover who doesn’t need more stuff? Donating to a rescue in their name will touch them way more than orthopedic slippers. Check out pages 18-24. We highlight awesome local items, rescues, items that benefit great causes, and cool ideas that will help make this season of giving truly personal and heart warming. It doesn’t have to be expensive and it doesn’t have to be difficult to give good. It just takes a little more thought—and we’ve given you a lot of great ideas that light your creative spark!

Page to Watch BLUE’S MIRACLE Blue was surrendered, paralyzed with a broken back. He had surgery and will go through rehab. Cheer him on his road to being able to walk again on Facebook! Oh! ...and Blue is also looking for a forever family. Contact Blue’s Miracle on FB to meet him!

DRs. DAN & KAREN BROWN

Two people instantly come to mind when I hear the word “awesome”— husband and wife, Dr. Dan Brown of Animal Eye Clinics and Dr. Karen Brown of Clay County Animal Hospital. Their warmth is the first thing you notice. Their concern and generosity follow right behind. I’ve never met two kinder individuals. I’ve seen Dan and Karen take care of animals while sacrificing time and financial gain for themselves. These two never turn away an opportunity to help and I cannot imagine the lives they have impacted in the years— as veterinarians, friends, and as parents. The craziest part to me is how they think nothing of it—it’s innate. They’re caretakers and givers!

WE ASKED Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) volunteer coordinator Cristhel Lewis to let us know about some of their awesome helpers. We learned ACPS couldn’t function without its amazing volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer: friendsofjaxanimals.com/volunteerapplication

PR ISCILLA

Our cat expert! priscilla is one of the few volunteers entrusted with

caring for cats that may not be ready for adoption. she helps provide enrichment and socialization needed for the cats to move to the adoption floor. she volunteered an astounding 1,742 hours during the 2016-2017 fiscal year! her love and dedication to the cats is beyond words.

Another one of our fierce cat volunteers! kelly helps provide enrichment and socialization needed for the cats to move to the adoption floor. she has played a huge supporting role helping cats that came from “not ideal” homes, and with patience and love she has helped them blossom into amazing adoptable cats!

A true friend to our dogs! since joining our volunteer program in the summer, mike has visited the shelter multiple times a day to ensure all our adoptable dogs get walks, play time, and human interaction. we’ve seen many positive changes in the dogs’ behaviors, thanks to his dedication. we’re lucky to have mike in the team. His dedication and compassion for the dogs is admirable.

She’s like a machine! michelle is very hands on and not scared of hard work. she

helps with whatever the animals need—from cleaning kennels to socializing cats. without michelle’s help, many of the cats that come from confiscation cases would have a rough time getting adopted.

Our “Laundry Queen!” brenda’s dedication to our laundry room ensures the shelter’s animals have clean blankets and bedding. she also supports our behavior team and also helps dogs in need of medicated baths. without brenda’s help and dedication our kennel staff couldn’t do their jobs successfully. brenda is also a foster parent and amazing asset to our foster program! Meet the angels

and their new families

There isn’t enough ink in the world to fully describe how wonderful and loving my mother, Barbara D’Andrea, was. If you knew her—I need not explain. Whether you were family, friend, or stanger, it didn’t take long to see that she was a beautiful soul; full of kindness, acceptance, and love. On June 30 of this year, she left us unexpectedly. I miss her every moment of every day. Growing up we always had animals. Cats, dogs, birds, bunnies, a snake—my mom even adopted a goat and fostered a potbelly pig! She always rescued animals and opened her home to all. She showed anyone who listened that animals are angels that only want our love ... and food. She would say that animals didn’t judge or care about money or material things—they just wanted to love PEPPI

Peppi (the cover model) and I got on from the start. We’re about the same age in dog years, and we both have creaky bones! Peppi just loves being together. We were looking for an older rescue that could use some quality of life and Peppi appeared like magic. Perfect fit. ~ Jim Alabiso

us and for us to love them. They accepted us for who we are—no judgements. In many ways, my mom was like that, too. Our pets were always part of our family—they were our equals. My mom loved them just as much as she loved us. Her heart was so full of love and compassion. She would help everyone and anyone. Always putting others before herself. She had a way of making you feel important and loved when she spoke to you. If you needed help—she wouldn’t hesitate, and would be by your side helping as much as she could. Even if it was just her being able to give you her ear. She was the definition of selfless. I’m so grateful that in this world, she was my mom. I miss her so much. After her passing, an amazing community came

Pet Doctors of America Works to Give Patients a

Fear-Free Veterinary Experience JenniFer LeGranGe, dVM Fear Free Certified Professional

As a veterinarian, I’ve always been interested in behavioral medicine. Over the years as a general practice doctor, I noticed that many patients display fear, anxiety, and stress during their appointments or while boarding. While attending a veterinary conference earlier this year, I learned about the Fear Free Initiative, which is a training program for veterinarians and their staff that teaches low-stress handling techniques and ways to alleviate patient fear at the veterinary hospital. Upon completion of this training program, I was awarded the title of Fear Free Certified Professional. I was elated to learn that implementing these fear-free protocols throughout the clinic at Pet Doctors of America improved my patients’ veterinary experience and helped them get the care they needed without having to experience fear, anxiety, or stress! The emotional well-being of your pet is such an important part of their overall health. Since invoking these new fear-free protocols at Pet Doctors of America, we’ve been able to truly make strides in making our patients’ visits actually pleasant for them! It all starts when you call to book your appointment. You’re asked about past veterinary experiences that may have caused your pet to be scared or nervous. By knowing more about your pet’s individual preferences, we’re better able to customize the veterinary visit to relieve angst. This may entail waiting in the comfort of your car with your pet prior to the appointment if he or she gets nervous in the lobby around other pets, or even having your dog examined outside if they become anxious upon entering the hospital! For pets that show excessive signs of stress during visits, one of our veterinarians may prescribe anti-anxiety medications or calming supplements to administer prior to the appointment to ensure a safer, more relaxed visit.

In addition to personalizing your pet’s veterinary experience, Pet Doctors of America has reevaluated how our hospitals are perceived by our patients. Because dogs and cats can be more sensitive to environmental stimuli than humans, our staff utilizes gentle control when working with patients which allows for the safe, comfortable administration of veterinary care. Our staff members bring the procedure to the pet in the examination room whenever possible, so that your pet can stay with you where he or she likely feels the most relaxed. We create a calming environment in our examination rooms, treatment areas, and boarding facilities by playing classical music, using species-specific pheromone diffusers and aromatherapy, and we minimize frightening stimuli to promote relaxation. Cozy hiding spots are provided in examination rooms and boarding facilities for our feline patients, non-slip surface options are available throughout the hospital, and water bowls are provided for all of our patients during appointments. Our patients are also offered a variety of yummy treats—if medically appropriate—during appointments to help condition a positive emotional response with our hospital. I’d love to personally invite you to bring your pet in for a “happy pet” visit to ask us more about our Fear Free practices and how we can reduce your pet’s stress level during your next veterinary visit—we’d love to meet you! • You can make your appointment at one of Pet Doctors of America’s two locations: 14471 Beach Blvd., Jax (904) 223-5700 1103 3rd Street S., Jax Beach (904) 853-6223

Silent Night

Leo, cozy in his Silent Night home

Lindsay Layendecker

Imagine a silent night—where all is calm and

bright—at an animal shelter! It happens every year at the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) during the holiday season. Community members line up for the chance to bring home a shelter dog or cat for a few days over Christmas to experience the holiday in a home. Families love to spoil their Silent Night pets with stockings, presents, and of course—cookies! The process is simple. Bring your family to JHS and visit the adoptable animals during the designated dates. Once you see a pet you like, the adoption Alfred was the last pet available for counselors can help you Silent Night 2016, he went home meet the pet and learn with a little boy. more about them. Then head home to start the celebration! Silent Night is an excellent program for any family—whether it is a family with five children or just one person. Participants are often looking for unique Gumby leaving for Silent Night way of giving back for the holiday season. Some are considering adoption while others are just looking for companionship. Some are even members of the armed forces who cannot go home for the holidays and want to spend time with a pet. No matter the motivation, there are plenty of pets waiting at JHS—and they’d love a silent night! • Join in the fun this year with JHS Silent Night! the Truth about the Christmas Puppy karen caMerLenGO

raiser OF Many dOGs, a FeW HUMans, and JasPer THe Bird

So you have the romantic vision of a puppy

under the Christmas tree, and the shiny happy kids in awe of your magical gift, huh? Stop, drop, and roll. Now get up and look me in the eyes. Please don’t do it. In the interest of full disclosure, I have given a dog as a Christmas present to my children. This makes me a complete hypocrite in writing an article about why you should not give a puppy as a Christmas present. Yet here I am. Every January, two things happen without fail. One, people go to they gym for the first three days and, two, Craigslist, shelters, and rescues will be inundated with unwanted “Christmas presents.” These puppies will absolutely crush an already saturated system. I’m seriously not trying to be bah-humbuggy here. I’m a parent, too. I want nothing more than to make my children’s eyes light up and dreams come true on Christmas morning. Christmas is magical and there’s nothing like making that magic happen. But! There is another side of being a parent and that involves teaching kids about responsibility and common sense. Puppies are super cute, but they can also be horribly unpleasant if you’re not prepared.

They need a lot of attention, they pee and poop everywhere, eat stuff, and whine. You can just stick them back in the box and carry on with your Christmas plans. They make the normal life of a parent who is already on the go all the time nearly impossible. You can’t always arrange school pickup, soccer, dance, and birthday parties around a puppy’s needy schedule. In addition to the general time-consuming nature of puppies, far too many people elect to buy a puppy from a pet store, a flea market, off an ad, or from someone whose dog had a litter. So now your impulse Christmas present is not only annoying, but you have one with a good chance of having some significant health problems. Nothing crushes holiday magic like a puppy with parvo (which has been happening from certain pet stores in our area recently). So what to do when your little one has a puppy on his list? First, the adults need to have a discussion about the realities of life with a dog—truly research what this means for your family. While you may tell Sammy the dog will be his responsibility, the adults also have to know he is going to fail at this at times, and it will not be a reason to get rid of the dog (or Sammy). You are the adult, just go ahead and assume this responsibility.

16 | Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love. / Lao Tzu

You can still make magic happen... Once the adults in the home have decided that they can live life with a puppy, go ahead and get your child a toy or a collar for Christmas with a note that this is for his new dog! Include a certificate or note telling him a dog will be adopted after the holidays. I can nearly guarantee there will be a HUGE smile and squeals, just the same. Let your child know that holidays are very dangerous times for a puppy to be in the home and it will be best for him to arrive after the decorations are away and the craziness is over. Then get to work together!

The moment you bring him home, he is family. You can teach your child that, too! One final note—the Christmas “puppy” given to my kids was actually a two-and-a-half-year-old stray who had been our foster for six months— we were keeping her. My girls screamed and cried and were just as excited than if we had given them 100 puppies. Sometimes when kids say puppy, all they really want is a dog. Think about that, too!

Sure, there’ve been successful “puppies under the tree” moments that have turned into life-long amazing family moments. The problem is that Perhaps you’ve already eyeballed some puppies the numbers that have gone horribly wrong (or older dogs that may already be trained) on rescue sites and have been talking to the fosters or far overshadow the happy stories. If you’re thoughtful with this decision and rescues. Arrange time for the family to meet prepare, you can save a lot of the dogs. Research together. Make a decision heartache and make the magic last and lifetime commitment together. At the an entire lifetime. • end of the day, you will have given your child not only a furry friend for Christmas, but a Karen Camerlengo is an animal advocate valuable lesson in research and responsibility. and raiser of many dogs, a few humans, This puppy or dog will be with you until he is and Jasper the bird. Karen lives in Jacksonville, Fla. old and gray and needs a little help walking.

7-Year-old Twins Write a Book to Help Rescue Dogs

Too Licky JOdy GiLes Proud Mom

It began as soon as we announced,

“We’re moving ... we can get a dog!” My twin daughters, Gigi and Ryan, began naming characteristics that might not be a good fit … too small, too big, too serious, too … They wrote it all down in a book, but their “manuscript” settled in among other books they’d written and was forgotten as our family began our new life in Jacksonville. When we were finally settled, we felt the time was right to add a forever friend to our family, our search for the “perfect” rescue dog began. It was a little overhwelming at first, but thankfully, we met Cynthia Inks. She became our rescue dog advocate and educator. She guided us on the rescue journey. After multiple visits to shelters and meeting lots of dogs, we met Sugar. As soon as we met her, we had the ending to the story! She was our dog. We’ve said Sugar was the perfect fit because she is “too perfect.” Gigi and Ryan say it’s because she’s so sweet, loves to love and be loved. When we discovered Cynthia was also an amazing artist, the idea of this book actually becoming a reality was solidified. Cynthia created beautiful illustrations of the twentyone rescue dogs featured. Too Licky is truly a gorgeous masterpiece, thanks to Cynthia. Not only did she create the fun and colorful

illustrations, she’s also the reason their book has a happy ending! Throughout our journey to find the just right rescue for our family, we learned about the organizations that work tirelessly to support the shelters. Cynthia also helped to education and raise our awareness of the discrimination certain breeds face. Because of what we learned, Gigi and Ryan will be donating proceeds from their published book to rescue and bully breed advocacy organizations. I’m so grateful for what Too Licky has become—a labor of love for the entire rescue community and a resource for families looking to adopt their forever friend. With each book, we hope Too Licky will continue to raise awareness for the amazing work of rescue and bully breed advocacy organizations. I am certainly biased, but is there’s a children’s book that more perfect than Too Licky? A fun story, amazing illustrations, awesome cause, and great gift idea! • To purchase: toolicky.com/Amazon Illustrator Cynthia Inks is a local artist who paints murals, pop art, pet portraits, paw print art, funky beach art, faces, and prenatal bellies. facehooked face danny niBLOck

cOMedian + FOsTer FaiLUre

Okay Facebook, you got me. I didn’t want to like you but now I must admit, I’m hooked. I’ve been a card-carrying member since 2010 and have well over 200 friends; I actually know less than half of them. The only reason I got a Facebook account in the first place was to spy on my kids. They’re all grown and living busy lives so I thought it’d be an easy way to find out what they’re really up to. Turns out that had consequences I hadn’t planned on. When my son bought a motorcycle—seemingly on a whim—I was concerned for his safety. He assured me that he was very cautious, and took a three-day safety course so, “No need to worry, dad.” A few weeks later, what did I see during one of my spy sessions? Multiple photos of him doing wheelies and cruising down I-95 with the classic “look mom, no hands” pose. So I commented “Who taught your safety class, the ghost of Evil Knievel?” I don’t think were Facebook friends anymore, but I’ll always be his dad in real life. Another day, as I was minding my own business snooping on my daughter, I read this post: Hey friends with tats, how did you tell your conservative parents you’re getting a tattoo?

I was shocked and called her immediately. I told her I had read her post and couldn’t believe she’d called me conservative. I am a libertarian at best. I tried to talk her out of getting the tattoo, but she wasn’t having any of it. She said she’d put lots of thought into the design and the artist and if I didn’t like it she could always keep it covered with clothing and I would never see it. So I said “I don’t want there to be a part of your body that I can’t see.” You know what I mean. Okay, enjoy your tattoo. In all the years that I’ve been on Facebook, I almost never post anything. Politics are too divisive, my lunches are boring, and my cats are just not that funny. At this point I should just wait for a post of something that will scare my kids— like me getting a tattoo of Donald Trump riding a motorcycle across my chest. Calm down, I’ve put a lot of thought into the design. • Danny Niblock is a comedian, TriviaGuy, craft beer drinker, catdad, proud grampa, and dogdad to Koda.
