Generous gift allows Center for Innovation to create Runway Student Start-Up Showcase.

Together, we made 2022 a year to remember!

A standout moment was the grand opening of the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration, a project that demonstrates the collective power of UND’s alumni and friends.

The lead gift from Werner, ’68, and Colleen Nistler was the catalyst for the project. Additionally, a $20 million state investment and the generosity of more than 65 additional major donors made it possible to open this important new building.

If you haven’t been to campus recently, I highly recommend the trip! Nistler Hall is just the latest in a long list of new and renovated buildings on campus.

Other notable achievements in 2022:

• Donors contributed $72.5 million in the fiscal year that ended in June, the second-highest total ever.

• Nearly 1,300 alumni and friends made their first gift ever to UND through the UND Alumni Association & Foundation, a 45% increase over last year.

• We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Gorecki Alumni Center. More than a half-billion dollars has been raised to benefit UND students while working out of this building! On top of that, 120,000 people have taken Admissions tours that start from the Gorecki. Turn to page 10 to read about our building’s namesakes.

We strive to help our donors find their philanthropic purpose and become part of the collective “We” making profound impact on the lives of our students.

The new year is off to a great start! With the North Dakota Legislature in session, we have been busy showcasing the power of higher education and the impact UND has on the state.

In addition, we eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring, which is a time of renewal – a great metaphor for the renewal we have seen on campus, with new and renovated buildings, growing programs and opportunities for campus members to contribute to our future.

As we look forward to this year, I also reflect on the past year. I have referred to this academic year as “The Year of Gratitude,” and indeed I feel a deep sense of gratitude for all that has been accomplished, and to those who have achieved so much.

• Eighteen UND students have won or been finalists in national and international scholarships, including Sydney Menne, a senior who was awarded the Marshall Scholarship, a first for a UND student. I am deeply grateful to Sydney for her tremendous academic efforts and to our faculty and staff who supported her.

• UND is at a five-year high for enrollment, and there are more Presidential Scholars on campus than ever. I am grateful these new students chose to further their education at UND.

• I am grateful for the thousands of people across campus who worked to develop our new Strategic Plan, called UND Leads – Today, Tomorrow, and Forever. This plan will guide us as we create experiences on campus and online that promote a sense of discovery, a sense of wonder, a sense of belonging, and a sense of community.

“The Year of Gratitude” never really ends. Everyone in the UND community can show gratitude, and we must make it a habit. Being grateful for the things we do daily creates a community of respect and the necessary environment for shaping future leaders.

I look forward to another year of interacting with our dedicated alumni, students, faculty and staff.

SOCIETY Eternal Flame

The UND Alumni Association & Foundation established the Eternal Flame Society to recognize our most generous donors.

The name was carefully chosen as a reminder of the forward thinkers who have passed the torch of knowledge to the next generation through their financial contributions.

Within these pages, you’ll see the collective impact each Circle within the Eternal Flame Society has made this past year. You’ll read how members have supported the four pillars of fundraising at the University of North Dakota: students, faculty, programs, and facilities. The purpose of the Gratitude Edition of the UND Alumni Magazine is to honor longstanding members who’ve taken part in our tradition of giving back and new members who will keep the flame glowing.

’62, ’63, & DOROTHY GORECKI ‘IT’S A GOOD FEELING’

Fall 2022 marked 10 years that the Gorecki Alumni Center has served as home to the UND Alumni Association & Foundation (UNDAAF) and more than 125,000 UND alumni. UNDAAF staff have raised more than a half-billion dollars working from the building. That work was make possible by a $5 million lead gift from Dorothy and the late Ben, ’62, ’63, Gorecki.

Ben loved that the building represents the “home” for our alumni and friends who return to campus, yet Dorothy said she’d rather not have her name on the building. “We don’t give for recognition,” Dorothy said. “I give where I see a need; where I see I can do good; that’s where I give.”

The Goreckis have done a lot of good over the years. When Ben started at UND in the late 1950s, the family already had three children. While Ben earned two degrees and worked part-time, Dorothy took care of the family and worked various jobs.

“We had a good life in Grand Forks. Ben was so dedicated to UND. He got two degrees and did so well after college using the knowledge he gained. He felt he owed the university; he felt he needed to give back.

“My husband just wanted to give, give, give!” Dorothy said.

After Ben graduated, the Goreckis started Gorecki Manufacturing, Inc., in Milaca, Minnesota, and ran the company for 40 years. At one time, they employed 450 people at three facilities.

The Goreckis focused their charitable giving on education, health and special needs of their communities, hoping to inspire others to give. In addition to his love of UND, one of Ben’s favorite projects was the Gorecki Guest House, which has 28 rooms available for families of patients at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Unlike Ben, Dorothy doesn’t have a favorite project. “They are all my favorites because they all filled a need.” \\\

NEW YEAR, NEW LAWS. NEW WAYS TO GIVE.

New legislation in 2023 includes retirement changes widely known as Secure 2.0. Here’s what it does for charitable giving:

• Increases the required minimum distribution age to 73.

• Adjusts annual limit on direct gifts to qualified charities for inflation (starting in 2024).

• It does not increase the age at which an IRA owner can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). That remains at 70½ years.

• Allows for a distribution from your IRA to fund a life income gift.

• If you are 70½ or older, you can make a one-time QCD, up to $50,000, from your IRA to create a life income gift – without being taxed on the IRA distribution.*

• Life income gifts include charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable remainder annuity trusts.

• This new gift strategy may allow you to make a gift to UND through the UND Alumni Association & Foundation AND receive lifetime payments.

UND freshman Ethan Mathews is the first recipient of the Seymour “Si” Robin Foundation Aviation Scholarship. Si and Ethan met last fall, when Si was on campus to announce his gift.

NO MISSED CONNECTIONS

Connected to UND by friends and fueled by his passion for aviation and students, aviator and inventor Seymour “Si” Robin donates millions to UND Aerospace, including an important match for a new Flight Operations Center.

Aviator and inventor Seymour “Si” Robin first visited UND in 2005 when his friend and long-time UND supporter Clay Lacy introduced him to the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. Si was impressed. He immediately recognized and appreciated the work ethic and vision of the Odegard School’s staff, faculty and students and its inventory of aircraft and military equipment. Since then, Si has donated millions of dollars to the school.

Though not a UND grad, Si – a lifelong pilot with multiple airplane antenna patents – is grateful for the ways UND is advancing aviation. “UND is an important source of support to the airline industry in terms of pilots, mechanics and other transportation needs,” he said. “I look at the talent and the great people at UND. I never met John (Odegard) but I look up and I say ‘thank you.’ Thank you for making this school.”

Robert Kraus, Dean of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, explained the legacy of UND Aerospace founder John Odegard. “John would find people and introduce people, and he would sell the program. Several people came to Grand Forks and were blown away by what was going on in North Dakota. As they learned about the program, they said UND was doing exactly what needs to be done to train professional pilots for the airlines, for business aviation and for the whole aviation industry.”

To support Odegard’s vision, Si and his late wife Betty have provided lead funding for several projects. Most recently, he pledged a $5 million matching gift for the Flight Operations Center, which – when constructed – will be the centerpiece for UND Aerospace students and flight instructors.

THE FLIGHT OPERATIONS CENTER

For more than 30 years, UND Flight Operations has been housed in the school’s maintenance building. The building is busy 18 hours a day, seven days a week, with more than 400 student flights each day.

When Kraus started as dean two years ago, one of his first objectives was to find a way for the school to build a new flight operations center. After JLG Architects completed the required formal design study, school officials considered financing options, either from the state legislature or philanthropic sources, and decided to go with the latter.

Enter Si Robin, who – at the fall 2022 UND Aerospace Alumni Advisory Board meeting – pledged $5 million to the $35 million capital project. Robin’s pledge is a two-for-one match. To unlock Robin’s $5 million, the school needs to get $10 million from other donors.

“Not many people contribute those kinds of dollars to projects here on campus, certainly not someone who didn’t go through our program and isn’t an alum,” said Chuck Pineo, ’94, ’97, CEO of the UND Aerospace Foundation. “He’s so supportive because of his passion for these young aviation people and our organization.”

“The Flight Ops building is a way for Si to give the students a physical space that is commensurate with the reputation of their flight training program,” Kraus said.

The Flight Operations Center will be a three-story, 28,500-square-foot building that will accommodate 21 new and 15 renovated huddle rooms for flight instructors and students to meet. Plans include a state-of-theart dispatch center, a large kitchen, offices for staff, an aviation bookstore and a 2,000-square-foot lounge.

The hangar will serve a dual purpose – a place to store aircraft and a venue to host events, which, according to Kraus, will enable UND to better “advertise our students to the airlines and advertise our university to prospective students.” Unlike the current building that operates like a dispatch center where students are in and out, the new building “becomes a destination for students to study and meet with their instructors,” Kraus said, and added, “These improvements will benefit the image of the entire airport.”

The funding model is similar to UND’s recently completed Nistler College of Business & Public Administration building, with numerous opportunities for naming sponsors.

SEYMOUR “SI” ROBIN FOUNDATION AVIATION SCHOLARSHIP

“The things that resonate with Si are things that impact the students,” Kraus said.

Si donated $1 million to establish the Seymour “Si” Robin Foundation Aviation Scholarship. The scholarship covers expenses related to tuition and flight training for an incoming UND student and follows the student through their four-year degree program.

“Si Robin’s $1 million gift will generate a full-ride scholarship, renewable for four years, for seven aviation students over 10 years,” Kraus summarized.

UND freshman Ethan Mathews is the first Robin Scholarship recipient. The Colorado Springs native said planes constantly flying over his city fueled his interest, but it was listening to family stories that led him to pursue it as a career. “My great-grandfather was deployed to Vietnam as part of the Army where he flew helicopters and planes. Having somebody like that to look up to, to tell me what he’s done; I always looked forward to hearing his stories,” Mathews said.

Mathews, who participated in the Robin Scholarship interview process last spring, was “speechless” when he received the news that he’d been awarded the scholarship. He did, however, find the words to thank Si when they met last fall. when Si announced the scholarship at a UND Aerospace Foundation board meeting. “It was amazing to meet Si Robin,” Mathews said. “I got to thank him in person for such a generous gift. I loved that personal touch.”

Si, noting that aviation is a highly paid and rewarding field, offered, “My advice to all aviation students is to work hard on your studies.”

During the same visit, Si again recognized the connections made through aviation. “I’m really honored to be here,” he said, speaking in Robin Hall, where UND runs its unmanned aircraft systems education and research. The Robins were lead donors on the building, completed in 2016. According to UND Today, Si pointed to the building’s Legacy Wall of benefactors, which includes a photo of him and Betty. “I’m especially honored because of all these other people who are here on the wall, too,” he said. “And all of us hoped that the aviation program would be around for a long, long time.”

“It doesn’t take long if you’re looking around the campus to see the impact the Robins have made on the university and specifically on the Odegard School,” Pineo said. “One of the first things you see when you drive up to the campus or are passing by Grand Forks is Robin Hall. Now one of the first things you’ll see when you land here will be our new dispatch building. It’s appropriate that Si Robin is kicking that off as well.” \\\

WHO IS SI ROBIN?

Si Robin is a giant in the aviation industry.

He graduated from McGill in Montreal, Quebec, and moved to California in 1948 where he began developing aircraft antennae. He holds more than 80 patents for antenna-related products. Together with his wife Betty, Si led Sensor Systems Inc., a small company in Chatsworth, Calif., that designs and manufactures antennas for commercial, business and military aircraft.

After visiting UND and contributing to numerous aviation initiatives, both Si and Betty were awarded honorary doctorate degrees in 2018. This is one of Si’s many awards and honors, which includes the Living Legends of Aviation Inventor Award for his lifelong accomplishments in aircraft antennae design and development.

HARVEY, ’71, & MELANIE NOTEBOOM VALUE OF AN EDUCATION

Harvey, ’71, and Melanie Noteboom know the value of education and want to provide an opportunity for today’s students to “get a little bit further” in their lives.

The couple met as first-year teachers in East Grand Forks. Melanie went on to be a business education teacher in the district for 35 years. After that first year, Harvey moved on to a career in sales.

Melanie said the couple’s financial position provides the “opportunity to give money to young people.” Harvey elaborated: “If you’ve acquired any excess money and you don’t have kids, you have to decide where you’re going to go with it. We both have our degrees, so this is a case of putting our money where it’s going to be of some value to a number of people.”

The Harvey and Melanie Noteboom Education Scholarship Endowment provides scholarships to students enrolled in the UND College of Education & Human Development. The couple set up similar scholarships for students at Mayville (N.D.) State University, Melanie’s alma mater.

The scholarships are awarded to one or more junior or senior students each year. Melanie learned while working with high school seniors that “their plans often change during their first semester of college. Therefore, the Noteboom scholarships go to upperclassmen “who have a better idea of where they are going,” Melanie said.

The Notebooms also gave to the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration Building and designated UND as the primary benefactor in their trust. “We’ve enjoyed the benefits from our finances and always want to share them,” Harvey said.

The Notebooms have found other ways to share, taking advantage of their early retirement as a chance to give back. After moving to Phoenix, Arizona, in the late 1990s, the couple started a fruit-gleaning business. Over 14 years, the group led by Harvey and Melanie donated 1.5 million pounds of fruit to a local food pantry.

Melanie says that she and Harvey have a well-defined giving philosophy: “We wanted to help both of our universities and other organizations that help others.” \\\

DAKOTA MEDICAL FOUNDATION A DRIVING FORCE

Every February, people in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota receive several messages from local charities in their inbox, mailbox and social media platforms, all asking a simple question: Will you be a Giving Heart?

Those who answer the call participate in Giving Hearts Day, a 24-hour giving event that is now the longest-running giving day in the country.

15 years ago, Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF) spearheaded the event in collaboration with the Alex Stern Family Foundation and the Impact Foundation, which DMF created to help area nonprofits. Just 40 charities participated in that first Giving Hearts Day. Today, that number has exploded to 570 charities, who together have raised more than $164 million on Giving Hearts Day since 2008. It is the longestrunning giving day in the country.

“It’s grown beyond our wildest dreams,” Executive Director Pat Traynor, ’88, ’91, said. “But it’s because we live in a generous place where thousands more people help every year.”

For years, the UND Alumni Association & Foundation has partnered with DMF on Giving Hearts Day, together asking donors to provide life-changing support to students at the University of North Dakota.

While Giving Hearts Day is its most public initiative, DMF supports UND in other ways: It has generously given to scholarships and priority needs across campus, with a special focus on the School of Medicine & Health Sciences and the College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines. Additionally, it has supported Women for Philanthropy, which brings women together to embrace philanthropy while strengthening their connection to each other and UND.

DMF is well on its way of carrying out its vision to create the “healthiest, most generous region on the planet,” and Traynor credits the organization’s “dynamite” board of directors.

“I like to call them multipliers who have great ideas for us to always aim much, much higher than we ever thought possible,” he said. “And that’s been a key to our success.”

MY HEART’

John Solberg, ’76, wasn’t the most athletically gifted person, but that didn’t stop him from developing a passion for UND Athletics. His best memories of being a UND student are centered around the friendships he made on the football team.

“I just had so many great friends that were football players, so that program will always have a special place in my heart,” John said. He joined the team as a walk-on for the 1976 season and enjoyed the camaraderie that came with the experience.

Motivated by his great passion for UND Athletics, John is one of the instrumental donors toward Phase II of the Frederick “Fritz” D. Pollard Jr. Athletic Center project. He wants to see UND reach the next level in college athletics and help student-athletes gain the confidence they need to accomplish great things long after their time at UND.

Growing up on a farm just outside of Bismarck, John learned the value of hard work from an early age. “If you have the drive and ability to work hard, there’s no limit on what you can achieve,” he said. John believes that this mindset can lead anyone to success regardless of their background, skills, or athletic ability.

Outside of managing his expansive real estate company, Onward Investors, John loves to travel to UND games with his wife, Lisa – an equally avid fan.

His favorite trip was in 2016 when they ventured to New York City for their wedding anniversary and watched the UND Men’s Hockey team defeat Boston College at Madison Square Garden. The couple continues to make multiple trips every year to support UND Athletics.

John hopes that their gifts to UND provide opportunities for students like him who come from humble beginnings and aren’t quite sure if they have what it takes to be successful in the world. “I was able to stand on the shoulders of giants who went to UND and created an opportunity for me,” he said. \\\

INSIDE THE HOUSE THAT RALPH BUILT

21 years after the Ralph Engelstad Arena opened its doors, the Engelstad Foundation continues to make a difference at UND and far beyond.

On Friday and Saturday nights October through March, 12,000 University of North Dakota faithful gather on the north side of campus to watch Old Time Hockey. Inside the palatial Ralph Engelstad Arena, fans cheer on some of the most elite collegiate athletes in the world. They’re part of a tradition, an experience like no other, inside a shrine to North Dakota hockey, built brick by brick by the arena’s namesake, Ralph Engelstad.

Kris Engelstad recalls attending opening night of the arena on Oct. 5, 2001, with her parents. Some time before, during the planning and building of the arena, Ralph had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Rather than make the news public, he chose to keep it within his family.

“When he walked out on that ice, he was crying, and I’ve only seen him cry twice in my life,” Kris said. “He knew standing there was the first time – and the last time – he would stand on that ice. And nobody else who was giving him a standing ovation knew it, but we knew it.”

Ralph Engelstad died on Nov. 26, 2002, leaving behind a legacy that’s become a household name for anyone associated with UND. In the past two decades, the arena now known as “the Ralph” has served as home to UND hockey, hosted weddings, and welcomed big-name concerts, boosting the region’s economy.

FULL SPEED AHEAD

The Engelstad Foundation – created in 2002 by Ralph and his wife, Betty –continues to give, and give again.

In addition to the $104 million+ originally donated to build the Ralph, the Foundation has given more than $12 million in recent years for fan experience enhancements and locker room and weight room improvements at the arena, often dubbed the Palace on the Prairie or the Taj Mahal of Hockey.

“The Engelstad Foundation never takes their foot off the gas,” said Jody Hodgson, the arena’s general manager. “The impact of the Engelstad family and Engelstad Foundation on our campus, community, region, and quality of life cannot be overstated. I can’t imagine what we would do, or who we would be, without their support.”

That support isn’t limited to the facility. Myriad areas across campus benefit from the generosity of the Engelstad Foundation, ranging from academic scholarships to student-athlete mental health programs to summer school support for UND Football student-athletes.

“My dad felt that if you could help somebody have an education, then you could open the world for them,” said Kris, now Trustee and CEO of the Foundation.

Headquartered in Las Vegas, the Engelstad Foundation also has given to the Community Violence Intervention Center in Grand Forks, Sacred Heart School in East Grand Forks, and Farm Rescue in Horace, North Dakota. A generous gift in 2002 built a second, smaller Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, where Ralph grew up.

More recently, Kris points to philanthropic wins in the Las Vegas area.

Thanks to the Engelstad Foundation, 780 previously untested DNA kits on cold homicide and sexual assault cases across Nevada have now been tested. A new medical school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has been built. The project that Kris is perhaps most proud of is Betty’s Village, a housing facility for people with disabilities, named for her mother.

As her children have grown, so has their involvement in the Engelstad Foundation. “What we do is generational, and I’m happy to say that includes my children,” Kris said. “We’re not a spend-down Foundation; we’re going to be around for perpetuity.”

Her son, Sean, is a Trustee and Investment Director, while daughter Erin serves as Chief Granting Officer. The presence of Betty, who still serves the Board as Trustee Emeritus, looms large. Upon entering the Engelstad Foundation headquarters, there she is, pictured alongside her late husband, with the words “Do not underestimate small humble beginnings because sometimes they can turn out to be the greatest success stories.”

UPHOLDING A LEGACY

Kris thinks back to the flood of 1997 that devastated Grand Forks and several other communities along the Red River. Shortly after, her father announced his gift to build Ralph Engelstad Arena – still the largest philanthropic gift ever to be given to the University of North Dakota.

“He wanted to do something in his community,” Kris said. “The whole point of having it after the 100-year flood was to bring back jobs, bring back some building, and try to boost that economy. I think it was right on the tipping point of ‘Which way will this community go?’ This was a way to help that along.”

The late Earl Strinden once called Engelstad “the most outstanding and successful entrepreneur to graduate from UND in its entire history.” Known for his direct, focused, and no-nonsense approach to business, Ralph purchased the Thunderbird Private Airport in Las Vegas and co-developed the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He owned the Imperial Palace hotel and casino, one of the largest privately owned hotels in the world. With a second location in Biloxi, Mississippi, his business empire and property ownership extended across the nation.

“He’s had good fortune across the country,” Kris said. “But he always remembered where he came from.”

He came from the prairie of Northern Minnesota and grew into adulthood at the University of North Dakota. Here, as we file into the Ralph Engelstad Arena on cold winter nights, greeted by the sight of Kelly green, the smell of Bavarian almonds and the sound of the Pride of the North band, we remember him with gratitude. \\\

OWEN, ’71, ’74, & KATHIE ANDERSON, ’72, ’81 SHARING A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE

Owen Anderson, ’71, ’74, has taught on six continents, but for a week nearly every summer, he comes back to Grand Forks to teach a short course at the UND School of Law.

Anderson, who taught at UND from 197988, is one of the world’s foremost experts in oil, gas and natural resources law. Currently a Professor and Distinguished Oil and Gas Scholar at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, he has lectured all over the world.

“I’m thankful for my undergrad and law school professors. I was very well prepared for practicing law,” Anderson said of his UND education. “So, I’ve tried to give something back to UND over the years.” Anderson gives to the UND School of Law Excellence Fund through the gift of his time teaching these short law courses, considered “in-kind” donations. “I come back because of my loyalty to UND,” he said, recognizing North Dakota as the place

he honed his teaching skills. He became a full professor and published his first journal articles during his UND teaching tenure. “I got a very good education at UND. It was small enough that you got to know fellow students and faculty, but it was large enough that it could give you a choice of the kinds of classes and disciplines you’d like to study.”

Owen enjoyed his classes and student life, and most importantly, he said, “I met my wife.”

Kathie (Ryckman) Anderson, ’72, ’81, is a former teacher with two UND degrees and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas. “Owen’s short course at UND gives students the opportunity to study with one of the premier professors in the area,” she said. Owen credited Kathie with helping him master the art of teaching; she had several years of teaching experience when he started working at the UND Law School. \\\

STUDENT START-UP SHOWCASE PROJECT RUNWAY

Thanks to a generous alum, students at the Center for Innovation are on their way to turning their ideas into reality. An aviation podcast. An intervention gadget for geothermal pipelines. A dronecentered thermal imaging inspection process. A mobile aircraft detailing service. A correction system for electric motors. Five UND students pitched these ideas to a panel of local business leaders at the Runway Student Start-up Showcase in early December. The two-phase initiative was launched in fall 2022 by the Center for Innovation (CFI) in partnership with the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration. The program offers start-

up training, staff and faculty mentorship, networking with peers and industry experts, and up to $10,000 in minigrant funding to support UND student business ventures.

Phase I is all about market fit; 16 teams built products based on customer needs. Five projects moved on to Phase II. Teams, ranging from solo entrepreneurs to multiple members, each were awarded a $10,000 mini-grant and will meet weekly with CFI staff, Nistler faculty and industry mentors as they further hone their ideas.

A GOLDEN TICKET

Jim Scoular, a 1968 UND accounting graduate, gave the initial gift to create the Runway Student Start-up Showcase.

An Air Force veteran, Jim became president of the largest manufactured housing company in the Midwest and later founded Jimsco, Inc., which builds and sells affordable, nonsubsidized manufactured housing communities. He recently sold the business to his son and now serves as a consultant.

Jim and his wife, Ann, gave to the Runway program hoping to eliminate barriers for young entrepreneurs launching their business ideas.

“It’s about having the resources to do what you want to do. And the barriers become harder as the economy changes,” Jim said. He remembers his own setbacks, like when home mortgage interest rates hit 21% in the 1980s. “We thought there was no way we could move forward, but an entrepreneur can figure out a way to do it, and we did. Not everyone’s going to be successful the first time, but you have to just keep pushing forward and believe in what you’re trying to do.”

Jim said opportunity is the golden ticket for young people today, recalling that his father gave him an opportunity by teaching him how to manage retail, manufacturing, financing and insurance. He also stressed the importance of giving others a leg up –yet another valuable tool that taught him how to do business the “right way.”

“UND has always done it the right way,” said Jim, who has full confidence his investment is worthwhile. When UND leadership approached him with this idea, he knew the investment would make a real impact on students. He saw the promise of providing space for mentorship and collaboration as invaluable, recalling how beneficial roundtable discussions were to him and his colleagues when starting out.

“We would sit down and everybody argued their viewpoint. At the end of the day, because of the arguments and discussions, we’d come up with the best plan. And I think that entrepreneurs who are successful have that.”

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Landon Paurus, a sophomore in Commercial Aviation, capitalized on his industry knowledge to present a solution to a common problem for aircraft owners. He pitched a mobile detailing business with an emphasis on cleaning aircraft. Hawk’s Eye Mobile Detailing brings a detailing service to the customers; they no longer have to travel for the service.

“Most of the aircraft detailing that is done right now is out of personal hangars, so people have to fly their airplanes into the airport, which is going to cost them a bunch of money and brings a lot of hassle for the owner,” said Landon. He currently does detail work part-time at a local car dealership. This experience helped him determine the exact types of equipment and chemicals needed to do everything on his own. With the Runway grant money, Landon plans to buy his own trailer and equipment.

Landon would eventually like to hire more employees to increase the range of his services and take on a managerial role. He hopes to create what he calls “legacy potential” for the business by drawing in aviation students from UND and providing them with another outlet to use their industry knowledge.

Jim Scoular found it interesting to learn that Landon’s project involved detailing planes, as this was one of his roles while based in UND’s ROTC program at Grand Forks Air Force Base. To Jim, every skill is valuable. “I see value in anything that can have potential to help people,” he said.

OFF THE RUNWAY

The Runway program provides mentors for students who want to see their business ideas come to life. “This program is designed to give students the bare fundamental understanding of solving problems that truly exist in the market and the customers that it requires you to interact with,” explained Tyler Sletten, the Runway Phase One Coach. He said it’s common for only one out of 10 business ideas to make it in the real world. No matter the outcome of each Runway project, he thinks this program offers the essentials to teach what’s involved in making a business idea successful – like the fact that it might take more than one try.

“We want them to understand that the process is about finding the right time for your idea, and if now isn’t the time, that’s perfectly fine,” he said. “Instead

of giving up, you’ll learn to pivot into a new approach that’s more prepared for success.”

CFI’s vision for the future of the program is to scale up by adding more students and allowing young alumni and faculty to participate. Sletten hopes more donors, like Jim, will sign up to support the program.

“I don’t think it’s ever a waste of money for anybody who makes it or doesn’t make it,” Jim said. “This gives them the opportunity to not only realize their dreams but to do something of importance for the university, state and country.” \\\

LYN BURTON, ’70 EXPANDING THEIR WORLDVIEW

A small-town girl from Grafton, N.D., Lyn Burton, ’70, says one of her first international experiences was in high school when she befriended a foreign exchange student from Costa Rica. That experience multiplied when she got to UND and chose to major in English and History with an emphasis in Latin American studies.

UND leaders Dean Bernard O’Kelly and President George Starcher took notice of her talent and her international interests and provided the means to further her education outside of North Dakota.

In 1968, they cobbled together funds to pay for an airplane ticket to Washington, D.C., for a summer internship with the Peace Corps where she was assigned to the Latin America/Africa desk. The following year, they did the same for her trip to Colombia where she was a community ambassador with the Experiment in International Living, a program that offers crosscultural education for students through international homestays.

“Those piggybacked experiences have become foundational to who I’ve become as a human being,” Lyn said. “My worldview would have been very narrow – extremely narrow – but for UND. It gave me keys to the kingdom. So, paying it back is impossible but paying it forward is possible.”

At the start of her longtime career in government, private sector lending, nonprofit management and education in the affordable housing industry, Lyn began saving money. Her savings grew and in

2018, she established the Lyn Burton Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment in the College of Arts & Sciences. To date, it has provided scholarships for three students to take their education overseas. That same year, Lyn added the endowment to her will hoping to expand the worldview of generations after her.

“This fund is for other young people from small towns with limited academic and financial means who also have that need, that hunger, to have a bigger worldview and to become part of shaping a worldview that reflects their lived experiences in collaboration with others,” Lyn said. \\\

Lyn’s generosity can also be felt on our campus. She is a lead donor on the project to renovate Merrifield Hall.
