And Noteworthy... Alberta Mathematics 30-1/30-2 The High School Mathematics curriculum changed effective Fall 2010. The first Mathematics 30-1 diploma exams will be administered in January 2013. Mathematics 30-1 replaces Pure Mathematics 30. Mathematics 30-1 will be a prerequisite for all U of L courses that currently specify Pure Mathematics 30 or equivalent—with the exception of Computer Science 1620, Computer Science 1820, and Statistics 1770, which will require either Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2. Students are strongly encouraged to complete Mathematics 30-1. Instead of Mathematics 30-1, students may use U of L’s Mathematics 0500.

Faculty of Management Direct Entry There is no longer a requirement of one year of studies in pre-Management before entry into the Faculty of Management. Students will be admitted directly into the Faculty of Management. Students will also be directly admitted to the B.A./B.Mgt., B.Sc./B.Mgt., B.F.A./B.Mgt., and B.H.Sc./B.Mgt. Combined Degrees programs. See p. 18 for admission requirements to the Faculty of Management.

ApplyAlberta Alberta Post Secondary Application System The U of L uses ApplyAlberta, which is a secure online application system that allows students to apply to one or more of Alberta’s public colleges, universities and technical institutes through a common starting point and to authorize the transfer of their Alberta high school or postsecondary transcripts. See p. 30 for details.

TIPS FOR COUNSELLORS Admission Requirements v.s. Prerequisite Requirements

Required v.s. Recommended Courses

The courses given for each program (with the exception of programs in the Faculty of Health Sciences) are NOT required for admission purposes but are necessary to meet prerequisite requirements for courses in the program. Some programs do not require high school courses to meet prerequisites in the program. However, students are still required to present high school courses for admission purposes. See also Programs that DO NOT Require Prior Mathematics and Programs that DO Require Mathematics After Admission at www.uleth.ca/ross/hs_prereqs/math/math_requirements.html.

Certain high school courses, although not specifically required, are recommended either because the high school course is recommended background for one or more courses required in the major or because completion of the high school course will allow students more options when choosing major requirements. See the online version of this chart at www.uleth.ca/ross/hs_prereqs/program/all.html to access specific information regarding why a particular high school course is recommended.

NEW TRANSFER (COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY) ADMISSION Applicants who have completed three or more transferable semester courses at one or more post-secondary institutions will be considered as New Transfer applicants. To qualify for general admission, New Transfer applicants must have an admission average of at least 2.00 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale, calculated on all transferable courses. Admission requirements vary depending on the number of transferable, post-secondary courses completed as indicated below: eight or more transferable courses

 Admission GPA of at least 2.00 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale, calculated on all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses.  High school credentials are not required.

five or more (but fewer than eight) transferable courses

 Basic high school admission average of at least 60%, calculated on five appropriate 30-level high school courses (see p. 6).

at least three (but fewer than five) transferable courses

 Basic high school admission average of at least 60%, calculated on five appropriate 30-level high school courses (see p. 6).

 Admission GPA of at least 2.00 on the U of L 4.0 GPA scale, calculated on all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses.

 Admission average is determined using a weighted average of the high school admission average and all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses.

Admission Priority of New Transfer Students All transferable post-secondary work completed by New Transfer applicants will be used in determining admission priority. The admission average for New Transfer applicants presenting five or more transferable courses is calculated on all completed, transferable, post-secondary courses. For New Transfer applicants presenting only three to five courses, the admission average is a weighted average of the high school admission average and the post-secondary admission average. Subject to individual Faculty policies, admission priority is assigned to New Transfer applicants on the basis of GPA on all transferable courses.

Upon admission, students are assigned transfer credit on a course-by-course basis for eligible post-secondary work. Transfer of credit serves to reduce the number of courses which must be completed at the U of L in order to complete a program of studies. Applicants to programs leading to any Combined Degrees may be admitted directly to these programs, or may need to seek admission to programs in the Faculty of Arts and Science (for Combined Degrees programs including the B.A. or B.Sc.), the Faculty of Fine Arts (for Combined Degrees programs including the B.F.A. or B.Mus.), or the Faculty of Management (for Combined Degrees programs with B.Mgt.) in order to complete admission requirements. The University may offer admission to highly qualified transfer students prior to the application deadline. Applicants are encouraged to apply well ahead of the deadline. Refer to the Programs Available to New Transfer Students online (www.uleth.ca/ross/admissions/nt_prog.html). Also, see Part 1 - Admissions in the current U of L Calendar available online (www.uleth.ca/ross/calendar/part01.pdf).

Official Documents

Home School Applicants

Through ApplyAlberta (Alberta Post-Secondary Application System), applicants authorize the University of Lethbridge to request transcripts on their behalf from Alberta Education and/or publicly funded post-secondary institutions in Alberta. Applicants attending private institutions within Alberta or any educational institution outof-province must arrange to have official transcripts sent directly to the Registrar’s Office and Student Services (ROSS). Where possible, transcripts for out-of-province secondary schools should be issued from the appropriate provincial Department of Education.

Regardless of their citizenship or residency, Home School applicants will be considered according to the curriculum they followed. For example: A high school applicant who studied Alberta curriculum is expected to meet the requirements of an Alberta high school applicant (see p. 6). The applicant should challenge the departmental examinations in courses where such examinations exist to provide grades in the subjects challenged. By this means, an applicant will be considered for admission who presents final grades in five distinct subjects (see p. 6). A high school applicant from British Columbia should challenge the provincial examinations in courses where such examinations exist to provide grades in the subjects challenged. An applicant will be considered for admission who presents final grades in five distinct subjects (see p. 6). An applicant who presents both a high school diploma and appropriate, satisfactory standardized test scores, either ACT, or both SAT I and II will be considered for general admission (see p. 29).

Applicants currently studying at privately funded institutions within Alberta or any educational institution out-of-province are strongly advised to arrange, at the time of application, for the submission of interim transcripts if necessary final transcripts are not yet available. Final, official transcripts must be submitted on or before the document deadline.

Conditional Admission Conditional admission decisions may be made on the basis of interim/unofficial transcripts and mid-term mark statements (for courses in progress) received by the U of L by the Admission Decision Document deadline.

TIPS FOR COUNSELLORS ApplyAlberta Alberta Post Secondary Application System The U of L uses ApplyAlberta, which is a secure online application system that allows students to apply to one or more of Alberta’s public colleges, universities and technical institutes through a common starting point and to authorize the transfer of their Alberta high school or post-secondary transcripts.

Online Application This is the simplest and most straightforward way to apply. To apply to the U of L, you must first create an account on the ApplyAlberta website and then complete your U of L application. Students can access our application form from our DISCOVER website (discover.ulethbridge.ca/apply/applynow.ezc) as well as applyalberta.ca.

Education Combined Degree Programs Applicants may not apply directly into the Faculty of Education from high school. Interested students should initially apply to a pre-Bachelor of Education Combined Degrees program (pre-B.A./B.Ed., pre-B.Sc./B.Ed., preB.F.A./B.Ed., pre-B.Mus./B.Ed., pre-B.Mgt./B. Ed.).

ApplyAlberta: • Makes it easy for students to apply to one or more post-secondary institutions. The first time students use ApplyAlberta they will create a profile with their personal and academic history. This information is filled in automatically on each of the Alberta post-secondary applications they complete. • Facilitates the transfer of academic transcripts. Through ApplyAlberta, students authorize institution(s) to request the transfer of their Alberta Education high school and/or post-secondary transcripts. Students will not be charged a fee for transcripts transferred through ApplyAlberta. • Speeds up the application process. The ability to apply to multiple institutions without having to re-enter basic information and to authorize transcript transfers will save students time. See www.applyalberta.ca for more information.

TIPS FOR COUNSELLORS COURSE REGISTRATION PROCESS

OFFER OF ADMISSION

Timeframe

Expiry Date

Registration for the Fall semester typically starts around the end of April. Students who have been offered admission will normally receive their registration package from us in the mail in mid-April. A student can register on or after their assigned date, but the earlier the better for course selection.

We encourage students to send us their Confirmation of Admission form by the expiry date. If more time is needed, students may contact the Admissions Office for an extension (403-320-5700 | inquiries@uleth.ca) (see p. 39 for detailed contact information).

Program Planning Guide (PPGs)

Confirmation of Admission

The Program Planning Guide lists all required courses and includes a suggested sequence plan. This guide is included in their registration package and is also available online (discover.ulethbridge.ca/counsellor and www.uleth.ca/ross/ppgs/ppg.html).

Students need to send this form back to us (signed and dated) to let us know whether or not they plan to attend the U of L. If they plan to attend, a tuition deposit ($80) MUST accompany this form. Note this deposit is in addition to the $100 application fee that has already been paid.

General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER)

Registration Date

All U of L students must complete the General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER). This involves taking at least four courses from three different areas: Fine Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. The required courses in a student’s program typically fulfill some of the GLER requirement, so the Program Planning Guide,Timetable, and U of L Calendar should be used to determine which additional GLER courses should be taken. Refer to the current U of L Calendar at the end of Part 4, Academic Regulations for more information. The Calendar is available online (discover.ulethbridge.ca/counsellor and www.uleth.ca/ross/calendar/calendar.html).

This is the first day students can log on to the Bridge to add courses to their class schedule. U of L ID Number Students need this nine-digit number to log on to the Bridge for the first time and set up their U of L username and password.
