Marketing

“ A lthough I did not necessarily realize it at the time, my experience as a Marketing major at the University of Lethbridge prepared me to take on a variety of opportunities and careers as my interests have changed over the years. Upon graduation I took my first job with Canadian Pacific Railway and used some marketing-specific skills as well as the general management skills I gained with my degree. Five years later, when I decided that the corporate world was no longer for me, I was fully prepared to open my own business. My marketing degree gave me the confidence to deal with all aspects of running a business. I also take it as a compliment when other businesses in my community ‘borrow’ my marketing ideas and use them to help their businesses grow.” Jessica Williamson BMgt 2002

Are you creative? Persuasive? A planner? A ‘people person’? An idea person?

If you’re creative, practical, like both people and numbers, show strong analytical abilities and have good communications skills (including listening skills), one of the many careers in marketing may interest you. While different types of marketing jobs require different skill sets, marketing people generally need to communicate effectively and work independently, and they must be self-motivated and willing to show initiative. Almost one-third of North Americans are employed in marketing or marketing-related positions. Marketing’s role in organizations is becoming increasingly important, and Chief Marketing Officer has become a crucial position in many organizations. As a marketing professional, you can work in a wide range of industries across the globe. Salaries for marketers are among the top in business. Although new marketing hires may start with slightly lower salaries than some other fields, salaries often increase at a much faster rate and continue to grow after other fields have leveled off. Further, more senior executives started out in marketing than in any other field.

“No field in business offers a greater variety of career choices than marketing!”

What you’ll study Marketers are the crucial link between an organization and its customers/end-users and suppliers, building relationships that benefit all parties. Consequently, marketing is rooted in a strong understanding of the customer (whether an individual consumer or another organization). Identifying consumer needs, developing new products/services, developing communications strategies, ensuring products and services are available where and when consumers want them, determining prices, and adjusting all of these to international markets and different cultures – that’s the job of marketing.

As a Marketing major, you’ll balance practical project experience with the latest theoretical concepts. You’ll take courses in basic marketing theories, marketing research and consumer behaviour; and to suit your own career goals, you’ll choose electives in advertising, retailing, sales management, socially responsible marketing and international marketing. Whatever your focus, you’ll gain practical skills in designing marketing strategies for real products and services.
