INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUCCESS CERTIFICATE

The Indigenous Student Success Certificate (ISSC) is a uniquely designed program to enable First Nations, Metis and Inuit students to obtain a first-year university certificate as an academic starting point. This certificate can be used to enter into programs of their choice at ULethbridge or gain entrance into other work integrated learning or employment opportunities. We encourage you to apply early to meet specific external funding deadlines.

What is the ISSC?

The ISSC is a uniquely designed first-year credited university c ertificate that provides Indigenous students with a solid founda tion of academic and core skills in a culturally supportive environment that attends to Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Learning (IWKL). In addition to a strong ac ademic foundation, students are provided with cultural, social, and emotional supports, peer me ntorship, academic advising and skills development to create a positive first-year experience that positions them for success in whatever avenue they pursue. Upon successful academic completion, students will receive a first-y ear university certificate that will enable them to transfer into year two of the program of their c hoice at ULethbridge, or provide a foundation to gain entrance into other post-secondary programs, work-integrated learning or employment opportunities. Students in the ISSC may qualify for loans or other sources of funding t o meet their individual needs.

How to integrate health and well-being into your life and potential career

How to bridge cultures and build interdisciplinary knowledge

How to integrate Indigenous culture, wisdom and ways of knowing into your university experience

The inclusion of IWKL within the sciences, social sciences, humanities and fine arts

What do I need to apply?

We encourage any Indigenous student who would like to begin the ir academic journey in a culturally supportive environment and who would like the tangible outcome of a certificate to apply. If you do not meet admission requirements for other ULethbridge programs, are a new high school graduate, or have been out of school for some time and would like a supportive first year experience, the ISSC has been designed to support you.

What are the admission requirements?

• English Language Arts 20-1 or English Language

Arts 30-2

• Any three of:

- Aboriginal Studies 20

- Biology 20

- Chemistry 20

- One Fine Arts course: (Art 30 or Art 31, Dance 35, Drama 30, Choral Music 30, General Music 30, or Instrumental Music 30)

- Mathematics 20-1 or Mathematics 20-2

Students not meeting these requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What can I do after the ISSC?

- Physics 20

- Science 20

- Social Studies 20-1 or Social Studies 30-2

- A 20-level language

Students who complete all the ISSC requirements in good academic standing will receive a 1st year university certificate and are eligible to attend convocation to officially receive this. This certificate can then be used to apply to programs in the Faculties of Arts & Science, Fine Arts, Health Sciences, and the Dhillon School of Business. While students will enter their chosen program at year two, some programs may have additional admission requirements, or higher standards for entry before admission will be considered. Some students may want to pursue work opportunities, other academic avenues outside the Ulethbridge, or they may wish to take some time away from their studies. Obtaining the ISSC provides them with a competitive edge to pursue these avenues.

The ISSC Learning Facilitator and ULethbridge academic advisors will help you consider options for future study or employment.
