The company’s right to pollute the atmosphere or water table no longer exists. The real costs of production are starting to include the cost of befouling the environment.” Dr. Oz Palasvirta Associate Professor

What You’ll Study Finance grads typically follow one of two career paths: corporate finance or investments. Both use mathematical models and sound ethical judgment to integrate forecasts, past trends, the impact of historic and current events, and financial analysis. As a Finance major, you’ll study the essential elements of corporate finance and investments and then choose options such as global finance, portfolio management, financial institutions and markets, derivatives, and financial modeling. The Canadian Securities Course is another step recommended for investment advisors. You can complete the CSC while in the program or after you graduate. Professional Designations The Finance major prepares you for entry into professional designations: • A

Chartered Financial Analyst focuses on asset valuation and is typically employed by a corporation or mutual fund company. • A

Certified Financial Planner is typically involved in personal financial planning.

Additional Areas of Study Many financial professionals also study accounting to deepen their understanding of financial information. While you don’t need an accounting designation to be a financial professional, the joint study of finance and accounting is extremely beneficial. Similarly, more in-depth knowledge of economics is strongly recommended, as corporate finance and investments are firmly grounded in economic theory.
