We are entrepreneurial, innovative, socially responsible, inclusive and diverse, a place to belong, experiential and accredited.

Entrepreneurial

Our benefactor, Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon, CM, exemplifies entrepreneurism. A firstgeneration Sikh immigrant to Canada, he launched his storied career in real estate while still a teenager, buying a pair of houses in Calgary, renovating them and selling them for a profit. Today, he is the founder, president and CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corporation. He currently owns and manages almost 16,000 units in 17 cities across Canada with $2.8 billion in assets. It all started with that entrepreneurial spirit.

At the Dhillon School of Business, our courses will teach you the essentials to start or run businesses from small to large, plus there are specific paths you can take to grow and nurture that entrepreneurial spirit that already burns bright in you.

Family and Small Business Management minor

The entrepreneurial-focused courses in this minor give you hands-on experience to grow or start your own business. You’ll be taken outside your comfort zone but come out with solid skills, a serious business plan and real market data to back it up.

Test your entrepreneurial ideas in a safe environment

Have innovative ideas you want to put to the test? Agility is a campuswide program available to all uLethbridge students. The program supports student projects in areas including social innovation, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.

Recently Agility helped Dhillon student Peter HurdWatler create a secure virtual voting platform called

Veras Technologies INC. The project won him $10,000 at 150Startups’ Innovation Rodeo student pitch competition and the opportunity to go to Draper University in Silicon Valley for a five-week entrepreneurial accelerator program.

From our early trailblazing predecessors to present-day visionaries, we know what it’s like to be ignited with an entrepreneurial spirit. It embodies creativity, risk-taking, perseverance and passion.

My most memorable experience at the University of Lethbridge was co-founding a business with my friend in the New Venture Start-Ups course. Together [my business partner] and I interviewed over three-hundred people to develop a business model and product that would resonate with consumers. We are still running that business and plan to continue growing the business after graduation.”

Select students have the opportunity to work with ICSW conducting research.

Responsible management courses

10
The Dhillon School of Business believes in helping you become a responsible citizen and an ethical leader.

Students making a difference in research

Marketing student in the Dhillon School of Business, Zandria Bates is working with Dhillon faculty member Dr. Rhiannon Mesler on a project that aims to understand how consumer mindsets influence food consumption and food waste.

Zandria’s research first identifies the extent to which a scarcity mindset influences a person’s food preferences. It then explores how that perception of scarcity impacts food waste behaviours and investigates how an intervention may adjust food consumption behaviours.

“Each day’s work has purpose both for myself and a greater good. Further, I am working in the lab over the summer as a co-op work term as well, which helps in my working towards a co-op designated degree.”

11

Academically, my most memorable experiences are the Indigenous Studies and World History courses I had the opportunity to take. They were captivating and enriching in ways I never expected and they left me with a changed view of the world.”

I appreciate that I can access supports from Indigenous professors and staff members. I feel comfortable at the university because there are many strong Blackfoot people working here. There are vast opportunities for students who want to get more out of their university experience. With its focus on students, I don’t think there are many schools that have programs as effective and value-adding as Student Professional Development.”

Because of my co-op I now have an interest in the data sciences and would like to pursue a Masters in that field. I believe the best thing about coop is the competitive advantage it gives you as a student.”

Experiential

Two-thirds of our students participate in one of our many professionally linked programs because they better prepare you for the business world after graduation. You have many options for experiential learning in and out of the classroom including through the Student Managed Investment Fund (p. 9), international opportunities (p. 13) and Integrated Management Experience (p. 10). The following ways are more options that will get you valuable real-world experience before you graduate.

DSB Link

This program links in-class learning to real organizational problems. You’ll have opportunities to participate in a variety of short-term projects with organizations to gain experience; some for credit and some paid. Student Professional Development

This student-recommended program delivers free industry networking events, interactive workshops, online training, case competitions and more. These opportunities will further help you to develop work-ready skills beyond the classroom.
