2017 We shine brighter together

The University o Lethbridge exist thanks to yo

of ts ou.

When the southern Alberta community rallied together to establish a university in Lethbridge in the 1960s, their vision was bold: to create a unique liberal education-based institution that would serve the needs of southern Alberta students and enhance the economic and cultural diversity of our community. With unwavering determination, they took bold steps forward together. Their unshakable tenacity and remarkable ability to unite made their vision a reality, and in 1967, the University of Lethbridge welcomed its first 825 students.

In 2017, more than 2,500 donors made more than 6,500 gifts to the U of L. Your support enables us to ignite the minds of tomorrow’s leaders; to shine new light on problems and solutions through world-renowned research; to illuminate opportunities for students and community members; and to build opportunities on our ever-evolving Lethbridge and Calgary campuses. The University of Lethbridge is a magnificent example of what can be accomplished when individuals work together. The future for all of southern Alberta is bright because of your ongoing belief in education and research. On behalf of our students, alumni, faculty and staff, thank you for your vision and generosity. We truly shine brighter together.

Thanks to you — five decades of dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, community partners and generous supporters — the U of L has evolved into one of Canada’s top-ranked universities and leading research institutions, far exceeding our founders’ most ambitious expectations.

Sincerely,

Your gifts continue to transform the University. This is evident as we watch the new Science and Academic Building take shape on the north end of campus. We also saw a significant advancement earlier this spring as we launched the Dhillon School of Business thanks to a transformational gift from Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon.

The Future of Finance and Business Innovation The business school landscape is set to advance as the University of Lethbridge launches the Dhillon School of Business, thanks to a transformational gift and a unique partnership with Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon.

Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon embodies the immigrant success story: a Sikh, born in Japan, he spent his early years in Liberia where his family lost everything after the coup; today, he’s a respected community and business leader, a generous philanthropist and the founder, president and CEO of Mainstreet Equity Corporation.

Dhillon is now channeling that same innovative and transformative spirit into the University of Lethbridge, specifically the newlynamed Dhillon School of Business. Earlier this year, the University announced the transformation of its Faculty of Management in recognition of a $10-million gift from the entrepreneur.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, he’s amassed awards, accolades and sought-after appointments. And while some would see these as career pinnacles, for Dhillon they’re all part of the experience.

“Education is what drives successful global nations and Canada is unique in that there is so much opportunity here,” says Dhillon, who holds an MBA from the Ivey School of Business at Western University. “The U of L is a world-class university that the world needs to discover.”

“If you enjoy the journey, you’ll never reach the finish line,” he says, making it clear he likes what he does. Considering he’s on the job more than 70 hours a week, that’s important. “It’s not work for me.” But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been hard. “The day I went public, the real-estate index crashed; seven, eight months later, the tech bubble happened; in 2009, they pulled a large portion of our debt — all our mortgages got pulled; then oil dropped,” he explains. It was Dhillon’s unparalleled work ethic and dogged determination that ensured Mainstreet not only survived but thrived in the midst of these economic setbacks. “We are countercyclical investors: we bought back shares, we refinanced at a lower interest rate and we doubled down because we are believers.”

Along with a new name, the business school will focus on education for today and tomorrow, building on its current curriculum by expanding its focus on finance and business innovation, entrepreneurism and internationalization. It will provide new and exciting opportunities for faculty, students and community partners including Fintech, Blockchain and Crowdfunding. “What separates us from other business programs is the ability to pursue new trends and marry them to existing strengths, including liberal education and experiential learning. Putting all that together is powerful,” says Dr. Bob Boudreau, dean of the Dhillon School of Business. “Institutions around the world are going to have to pay attention because the Dhillon School of Business is on the move.”

For Dhillon, giving back is an important part of his journey. “I wouldn’t have achieved the success I’ve had if it wasn’t for education. I’m a first-generation Sikh immigrant and I’m very fortunate that I’m in a position to make this contribution. This is my way of giving back to Canada. Supporting innovative education is key to launching Canadian talent in today’s connected world.” And while he’s keenly aware of his position as an industry leader and similarly a pioneer for his community, he shakes off any formal application of the title. “Canada is a country of pioneers — the Scottish immigrants in the Maritimes, the Chinese railway workers, the Ukrainian farmers in northern Alberta, the Sikh lumberjacks in British Columbia — those were pioneers,” he says. “They paved the road and I just learned how to drive.”

“The future of Canada depends on education. I wouldn’t have achieved the success I’ve had if it wasn’t for education. I’m a first-generation immigrant and I’m very fortunate that I’m in a position to make this contribution. This is my way of giving back to Canada. Supporting innovative education is key to launching Canadian talent in today’s connected world.” Navjeet (Bob) Dhillon

Igniting Minds By fostering free inquiry and the critical interpretation of ideas, our unique approach to liberal education creates a better understanding of experiences and empathy for those around us. This helps our students become global citizens who think critically, communicate thoughtfully, respect creativity and act in ways that better the world around them.

Majoring in neuroscience and psychology, U of L student Imogen Pohl was awarded the Governor General of Canada’s Sovereign Medal for Volunteers in April 2018, and she was one of six Albertans awarded the 2017 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award for her passion and commitment to volunteering. Leaving a Legacy The Muthada Boora Family Award embodies life-long commitment to education With a slow sweep of his hand, Baljinder (Bal) Singh Boora exclaims how he is sitting in the house he built in just 100 days. His proclamation, however, is about so much more than the walls, windows and doors he erected, but rather the family, life and legacy that has been created by a selfmade immigrant who is proud of the path he’s walked. Boora is now eager to share his story and his success by supporting University of Lethbridge students through the Muthada Boora Family Award, a scholarship program that will support four $1,000 scholarships for entering or continuing students in any undergraduate degree program each year. “We’re very excited to receive Mr. Boora’s contribution,” says Dr. Shelly Wismath, dean of the School of Liberal Education. “The application process for the awards will include submission of an essay on liberal education, and Mr. Boora certainly exemplifies the values of liberal education in his own life-long commitment to accessible education and to giving back to his community.”

Boora first came to Canada in September 1972, originally settling in Toronto. After just five months, he boarded a train to Western Canada and hopped off the line in Brooks, Alta. There, he put his civil engineering skills to work. Over the next 30 years, Boora designed and analyzed water management systems throughout southern Alberta. It certainly wasn’t easy. He was laid off twice and unexpectedly lost his first wife, Jasvir Kaur Boora, when his sons Navraj (Raj) Singh and Parveen (Par) Singh were just 13- and 11-years-old, respectively. He tried and fell short seven times to run for office at the city and provincial levels of government. All the while, he continued to pick himself up, relying on his work ethic and sense of civic responsibility to lead the way. After remarrying Jaswant Kaur Boora and having a third son, Naveenjyote (Jyote) Singh, Boora started his own financial services firm. His three boys, instilled with their father’s values, attended and graduated from the U of L. Raj (BSc

Boora describes himself as a ‘go-getter’ and you’d be best to take him at his word. Born and raised in Punjab, India, the father of three used education as a pathway out of his homeland and to Canada. Growing up in a region where village leaders banded together to raise funds and build schools, he learned early the value of education and the strength of community. “If it wasn’t for their vision, farmer boys like me would not have had a place to go to school,” says Boora, who earned a civil engineering diploma. “We couldn’t afford to go to other institutions that were far away.”

Bal Boora and his wife Jaswant Kaur Boora 6

’99) now works for the Alberta Government, Par (BSc ’01) is a general surgeon and Jyote (BSc ’16) is at medical school. With his boys looked after, Boora started thinking about an old RRSP he started when he first arrived in Lethbridge, some 35-plus years ago. He also thought of the pioneering men who made education a community priority in his homeland and how they mirrored the maverick attitudes of those who pushed for the establishment of the U of L so many years before. “We were sitting one night and I told my sons I don’t think my wife needs the money and I don’t think they need that money in inheritance, so why don’t we give this to the University,” says Boora. “This country has given us so much. This community was here, I didn’t build it, I just came and started working. I think I’m going to leave a legacy here.”

Paying it Forward U of L alumna Sherry Davis (BMgt ’01) is making university life easier for students who are also parents You wouldn’t know it to talk to her now — a woman who is clearly confident and brimming with positive energy — but Sherry Davis (BMgt ’01) felt rather shy and intimidated at one point in her life.

“I have a great career, and it’s all because of the decision I made to return to university,” Davis says. “It was a real challenge, but one of the best choices I ever made. Thinking about that, it was clear to me that the way I should give back would be to support students who are in the same position I was in.”

She was a young mother on leave from her job as bank teller, a position she loved in an industry she found incredibly interesting and full of promise in terms of where it could take her in her career. But at 26, Davis knew she would have to go back to university for a second degree and specialize in business in order to advance in the world of wealth management, and at the time, she wasn’t sure it was such a great idea.

The idea sparked inspiration, and Davis created the Sherry Davis Academic Award, an annual award for a full-time continuing undergraduate student at U of L who is also a parent of at least one dependent child. The first award will be granted this fall.

“It seems silly now, but back then I felt too old to be a university student,” Davis says. “The whole thing was a daunting prospect. I was married, we had a mortgage, a baby to look after, we were struggling financially — going back to school didn’t just seem difficult, it almost seemed selfish. Of course, now I’m very glad I made the decision to go.” Davis began her journey at the University of Lethbridge in the late 1990s, pursuing a Bachelor of Management while juggling the demands of school, motherhood and life. In 2001, she graduated and went on to reach her goal and become a senior financial advisor with ATB Securities Inc. After 15 successful and rewarding years consulting and educating clients on financial planning and philanthropic giving, Davis began to think about the sort of legacy she wanted to create.

“When you’re a mature student and a parent, every dollar counts,” Davis says. “If $1,000 can help cover someone’s bills, pay for groceries for the term, or even make it possible for parents to take their kids out for dinner and a movie once a week, that’s fantastic to me.” Davis’s son, Nicholas, is now following in in his mom’s footsteps and currently attends the Dhillon School of Business at U of L. “He is certainly a motivator behind the gift as well,” she says. Both Davis and her husband, Bruce Thurber, are involved in the community as Rotarians, and Davis is a member of the U of L Senate. “I believe in service,” Davis says. “When we help others, we help our community at large. It’s a win for everyone. I challenge anyone who’s in a position to give back to really consider what you can do and what causes are important to you. Most importantly, I encourage you to do it now, so you can see the benefit as it happens.”

Is Canada on the verge of a brain health crisis? U of L neuroscience researcher Dr. Majid Mohajerani is one of the trailblazers behind research identifying the mechanisms at work in Alzheimer’s disease to allow for the advancement of effective treatments. He and Dr. Bruce McNaughton will investigate brain neurobiology related to Alzheimer’s disease thanks to two grants worth nearly $2 million over five years from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR). 8

Advancing Knowledge Reading Room established through historical contribution A voracious love of the written word and a lifelong pursuit to quench this thirst for knowledge has led to a historic gift to the University of Lethbridge’s Library. Dr. Robert Lampard, a physician who practised in Red Deer, Alta., for 26 years, donated his 6,774-item Western Canadian book collection to the U of L Library in 2017, where a large portion of the gift will be added to Special Collections and housed in the newly renovated rare book room, the Dr. Dorothy Lampard Reading Room. Named in honour of Lampard’s aunt, a founding U of L faculty member and senator, the room is a celebration of her lifelong commitment to reading. “The broad scope of the collection will provide Western Canadian researchers with a wealth of information about early Canadian exploration, the Arctic, mountaineering, early Canadian railway development (especially Sandford Fleming), Western Canadian banking and business history, the political and religious history of the prairie provinces, Indigenous studies, the HBC, railways, ranching, the fur trade, local history, the Canadian military and policing, natural history, geology and Canadian art,” appraises Barbara Ellis, owner of The Edmonton Book Store and a member of the National Archives Appraisal Board of Canada. The gift includes a complete series of the Champlain Historical Society publications, all the volumes of the Hudson’s Bay Record Society, and many seminal primary narratives of the exploration of the Canadian Arctic. Approximately 50 monographs have been signed by their authors. Other materials of note include those from John Palliser, Henry Youle Hind, Paul Kane, George Dawson, George Gladman, Alexander Begg and George Simpson. The extensive, formerly private collection is now accessible to a wide audience of researchers at all levels. Members of the University’s Department of History are particularly captivated by the opportunities that this unique collection will afford in the furtherance of Canadian historical research, particularly from the perspective of graduate education at the University.

U of L history professor Dr. Sheila McManus says the significance of the collection is in its scope and accessibility. “As a historian of the broader North American West, I am incredibly excited to have this collection housed at the U of L. It’s an important collection for my research and our students will be able to conduct amazing primary research in our own archives,” she says. “Having original primary sources on campus is an enormous boon for the University of Lethbridge and will certainly make us a destination for graduate- and faculty-level researchers.” For Lampard, the gift gives him comfort, knowing that it honours his remarkable aunt all while continuing a legacy of reading and literacy.

Dr. Robert Lampard’s collection has found a new home at the U of L “I am pleased and honoured that now other researchers will have access to the key historical prairie books dating back to the first one by the British Parliament in 1749,” he says. “The ‘chase’ is now over and my avocation now has a new and welcoming home.”

Funding Potential Breakthroughs A new fellowship award at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience could help crack the code on addiction The Tom and Lillian Beswick Fellowship Award in Addictions Research was founded earlier this year — a $100,000 donation that has been dedicated toward research that will help discover why some people appear to be prone to addictive or pathological behaviour, while others are not. Talking with Bette Beswick about the award, you quickly get a sense of how hard working her parents must have been, and how much this gift would mean to them.

Tom and Lillian Beswick (1989) Tom and Lillian Beswick lived their entire lives in Alberta. Both were born on their family farms in rural Alberta communities — Tom in 1911, Lillian in 1915. They married in 1940, built a home on a farm in Spring Coulee and raised a family of six children there. All three of the Beswick daughters attended the University of Lethbridge, and Tom and Lillian, after retiring from farming, sold their land and lived out the rest of their days in Lethbridge. The Beswick name is deeply rooted in the region, and recently it has garnered even more respect — particularly at the U of L’s Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN), thanks to a donation made by Tom and Lillian’s daughter, Bette Beswick (BASc (BSc) ’76).

10

“When my mom and dad sold the farm, they distributed the money among their kids,” Beswick explains. “I’ve been very fortunate in my life, so I thought it would be good to see the money go to something that could help others. I decided to support the CCBN because it’s one of the best research centres in Canada, and I wanted the money to stay close to where my parents always lived.” Beswick studied biology and psychology at U of L and has always been fascinated by how the human brain works. “I believe there must be some physiological reason behind addiction,” Beswick says. “What makes one person an alcoholic and keeps another person from becoming one? I don’t think I know anybody who hasn’t been affected by some form of addiction — whether it’s a family member, a friend or maybe themselves. My hope is that this award gives us some clues as to what drives that behaviour.” Dr. Robert Sutherland, the director and Chair of CCBN, says the research and training the Beswick award will fund has the potential to provide a lot more than just clues.

“My hope is that this award gives us some clues as to what drives that behaviour.” Bette Beswick

“The fellowship will enable us to conduct research that traces the decision-making circuits in non-human animals. We can then use that information comparatively in humans with pathological decision making of various sorts,” Sutherland says. “This work may be able to help us identify people who are at risk for addiction, which is valuable in terms of precautions or preventative measures that might be taken, rather than trying to treat addiction after it takes hold.” The Tom and Lillian Beswick Fellowship will fund training and research for a post-doctoral fellow at the U of L over a period of five years. The training and research the selected candidate will engage in is under the mentorship of neuroscientist Dr. Aaron Gruber. “The fellowship is enabling me to recruit a great trainee who will study how drug abuse affects the brain,” explains Gruber. “The objective is to be able to identify how activity patterns become abnormal so that we have an objective measure to assess treatments and preventions. The project is not funded by a grant, and so would not happen without the support of the Beswick Fellowship.”

The fall 2018 semester will be an experience of a lifetime for University of Lethbridge students Amanda Sakundiak and Mackenzie Salmon, thanks to the generosity of the Brawn Family Foundation and the Semester at Sea program. Established in 1963, Semester at Sea consists of 100-to-110-day international passenger ship voyages where students visit up to 15 countries in one semester. They learn from leading faculty and international experts, engage in hands-on field experiences and service projects at each destination and earn academic credit. “The whole goal of our foundation is to give back and create a bigger, better community,” says Kelley Buckley (BASc (BA) ’84), one of Dr. Robert Brawn’s (LLD ’16) daughters and director of the Brawn Family Foundation. “My father realized what a powerful program Semester at Sea was. Both of my kids, my sister’s kids, my sister and I have all sailed and he just felt it made a dramatic difference in our lives. As well, since four of our family are U of L alums, this was a great way to combine two programs that have impacted our lives.” Each year, more than 2,000 participants circumnavigate the globe aboard the MV World Odyssey. Sponsored by Colorado State University, the program champions a global comparative experiential learning model as it connects students to world challenges and fosters global awareness through profound international learning experiences.

(L-R) Kelley Buckley and her parents Carole and Robert Brawn

“I am so incredibly grateful and very humbled to receive a generous scholarship from the Brawn Family Foundation,” says Mackenzie Salmon. “Along with my on-ship studies, I will gain global

knowledge while experiencing India, Vietnam, Ghana, South Africa, Mauritius, Myanmar, China, Japan and Hawaii through their in-country programs. My involvement at the U of L has been incredible in regards to my academics and Pronghorn soccer experience, and now having the opportunity to study abroad will provide me with a global experience that will be unmeasurable.” Providing students with educational abroad experiences such as the Semester at Sea program is vital in providing graduates with global perspectives, international and intercultural skills and knowledge to succeed in an increasingly interdependent world. Amanda Sakundiak agrees. “Through this experience, I will be able to enhance my crosscultural awareness through travel and exposure, which for me is the best form of education,” she says. “I am honoured to participate in the program and am so incredibly grateful to the Brawn family.” For Buckley, the experience was transformative and she’s excited for her family to be able to share it with the next generation. “You realize how impactful your footprint can be in the big picture,” she says. “It’s changed all of our lives and we just feel that everyone needs an opportunity to go outside their comfort zone and look at the big global picture. Everything you do can make a difference.”

“Everything you do can make a difference.” Kelley Buckley

Creating Opportunities Gift to stimulate a more inclusive campus an opportunity to attend courses at the University. We had been thinking about establishing a scholarship for some time and our son’s participation in that course affirmed our decision.” “Randy had an outstanding experience,” says Nadine. “He very much enjoyed the whole process. He enjoyed being involved in the university classroom; he received a mark and was very proud of his accomplishments. It was a positive, rewarding experience all around.” Many of the people who could be involved in the university experience at some level can’t participate because of the tuition costs.

Nadine and Don Chandler are creating opportunities for a more inclusive campus Nadine and Don Chandler have advocated for inclusiveness ever since their son Randy was born with an intellectual disability more than 40 years ago, and now they’ve established an award that will help provide inclusive learning opportunities at the University of Lethbridge. “Three or four years ago, our son was one of eight individuals with disabilities involved in a drama and dance course at the U of L through former drama professor Lisa Doolittle,” says Don (BASc (BA) ’73). “As a result of this very successful program, we wanted to do something to enable future intellectually disabled individuals to have

“We wanted to create opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be there,” says Don, past president of the U of L Alumni Association (2009-2011) and a 2005 inductee into the Alumni Honour Society.

The Chandler Family Award is a two-part endowment. The Chandler Family Inclusion Fund will assist students with developmental or intellectual disabilities or an academic staff member who enables the participation of these individuals in the University community. If there are no applicants to the Fund, the annual proceeds go to support the Chandler Family Inclusion Award, which is given to an undergraduate or graduate student

who has shown outstanding leadership in the areas of developmental or intellectual disability or who has shown initiative to improve the lives of these individuals. Maggie MacKay, 20, was the first recipient of the award. She has audited several courses, with an assistant, in the Faculty of Fine Arts, including a drama course in movement and a stagecraft course about the technical side of theatre productions. “I liked making masks and I drew a Snow-White set design,” says Maggie. “I enjoyed it.” Her parents, Bruce (BASc (BA) ’84) and Flora (BASc (BA) ’85) MacKay, say her participation in university life is about much more than earning credits. “Maggie is an intelligent young woman and she’s continuing to learn academically,” says Flora. “We don’t expect she will get a university degree; it’s more the experience of interacting and socializing with her peers, navigating around campus and developing confidence. She’s learned a lot.” “The gift is a wonderful way for the Chandler family to support people like Maggie and others to have this experience at university but it’s also an encouragement for the University to implement programming or a system to make it possible,” says Bruce. When asked if she’d like to take more classes, Maggie says simply, “Yes, I’d love to.”

BuildING Opportunities Our continued campus development provides sustainable, state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Destination Project, bringing students, faculty and community together to create, inquire and discover in a transdisciplinary learning environment.

Now more than 75 per cent complete, the new Science and Academic Building will be open for classes for the fall 2019 semester. It is the largest construction project to take place on campus since the original construction of University Hall. Demonstrating Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the Destination Project is on track to earn LEED gold certification. The facility will be one of the most advanced facilities for science and research in Canada, expanding opportunities for students, faculty and community.

Igniting a Spark For retired University of Lethbridge faculty member, Dr. Douglas Dolman, seeing the progress of the new Science and Academic Building has been quite thrilling. Dolman and his wife Teresa met at the University and both worked on campus in the sciences for a number of years. They’re amoung a group of individuals who have contributed toward an interactive periodic table that will put science on display and inspire future scientists in the area. “The Science and Academic Building will be such a wonderful investment for the future of science in southern Alberta,” says Dolman. “I hope that by seeing the many extraordinary elements on display in the periodic table, it sparks something special in the young minds of those who visit the building.” The periodic table, sized at approximately 10 feet across by 6 feet high, will contain museum-grade samples of the elements themselves that are individually illuminated in cubes. Some elements and cubes can be made to be interactive and others are shown with examples of how it is used in everyday life. Evelyn Wigham and her late husband Darol Wigham, who were both geologists and have supported children’s education at the U of L previously with their outstanding children’s literature collection in the University Library, have also helped put science on display through their generous support of the project. The periodic table project has also gained support on campus, particularly in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, who first proposed the project. Drs. Peter Dibble, Marc Roussel, Michael Gerken, Bo Wang and Ying Zheng, as well as retired instructor Robert (Bob)McKay and a number of anonymous donors were early supporters. “The display will become a regular stop for elementary and high school classes and I intend to develop programs, such as element days, that will feed into such visits and offer members of the public and students opportunities to learn about specific elements, how they are used and why they are so important,” says Dibble. 15

“Education is our future. We are investing in the U of L because it is an institution that invests in others. Janice Varzari

16

Investing in the Future More than 50 years ago, the University of Lethbridge changed the landscape of southern Alberta – both physically and culturally. As the new Science and Academic Building takes shape on the north end of campus, it’s about to happen again.

“This facility will lead to new scientific discoveries for the benefit of humanity,” explains Dr. Matthew Letts, associate dean, Faculty of Arts & Science, highlighting the impact the building will have not only on our campus but on the broader community and even globally. “It will allow us to augment research productivity, improve our research funding success, forge new partnerships with industry, develop the regional economy, serve as a science centre for southern Alberta and inspire proud U of L students to embark on scientific careers.”

Sustainably designed with the local climate in mind, students, faculty and community will come together under one roof to create, inquire and discover like never before.

The building — and its positive impact — is more than the sum of its parts. Years of planning, consultation and collaboration, combined with the leadership and support of individuals and organizations who share the Universtiy’s vision for the collective future of the region, have ensured the project’s success.

“It’s more than supporting a building. It’s an investment in the University, its students and our community,” he says. “It’s creating a legacy that goes beyond our own region, province and even lifetime.”

“We feel it’s important to make a donation to this phase of the Destination Project because we want to contribute as best as we can to the generations who follow us,” says Janice Varzari (BN ’90, MEd ’02), the U of L’s 13th chancellor, a long-time Senate and Board of Governors member and a proud alumna. Janice and her husband Glenn have stepped forward with a significant gift towards the project. When the new building opens in fall 2019, it will be one of the most advanced facilities for science and research in Canada. A home for innovation and discovery, the open and flexible laboratory environments will encourage and foster research between the sciences, and with an abundance of transparent walls, science will truly be on display for the public to see.

“Education is our future,” Janice explains. “We are investing in the U of L because it is an institution that invests in others.” Glenn echoes Janice’s statements emphasizing their family’s commitment to tomorrow.

Truly a U of L family, the Varzaris have a longstanding connection to the University and began their support as a show of gratitude. They are now leading by example and have seen the charge taken up by the next generation. “We’re grateful to see that philanthropic spirit emerging in our grandkids now,” says Glenn. “We hope to see it grow in our own family, but also the community at large.” As Janice gets ready to wrap up her term as chancellor next spring, she is looking forward to watching the impact of her work and her family’s contributions to the University continue to take root. “It makes you feel like as small as we are, our tiny little efforts will reach across the world in some way through the thousands of graduates doing their work,” she says.

Community of Inspiring Lights Proudly located on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot people, Indigenous culture is woven into the fabric of our university. These strong local roots ground us but our community is truly global, and we continue to expand our reach. Each year, more than 8,700 students from approximately 100 countries call our campuses in Lethbridge and Calgary home, and our more than 43,000 alumni are making important contributions in communities around the world. U of L alumna Maria Livingston (BA ’15) is creating bright futures by celebrating the past. She is applying her knowledge and research by blending her artistic talent, desire to support Indigenous youth and passion for building community and cultural awareness. As a First Nations, MÊtis and Inuit high school career facilitator, she mentors students, helping them navigate career and skill development while they learn about their heritage and culture. As hoop dancer and visual artist, she teaches the importance of Indigenous cultural expression and the significance of dance, regalia, storytelling and art to the wider community, increasing awareness and inclusivity.

Shine On! “We have reached an all-time high for donor participation,” says Lukas Neamtu (BSc ’08), 2017-2018 Supporting Our Students (SOS) campaign co-Chair. “As part of the campaign, an impressive 464 donors contributed more than $160,000. I am so proud to be a part of this amazing community where so many people go above and beyond to help our students succeed!”

Campus Community Comes Together to Support Students The Supporting Our Students 500 at 50 Campaign wrapped up at the end of 2017 and the co-Chairs, Asheley Cowie, Lukas Neamtu and Dr. Olu Awosoga, are grateful to each and every individual who came forward to support students.

SOS is an annual campaign where faculty, staff and retirees come together to raise money for student awards and on-campus student-focused initiatives. For some students, like Madison Gerbrandt, a 2017 SOS scholarship recipient, scholarships make postsecondary education a possibility. “I am able to continue my education this year thanks to your assistance. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she says. The co-Chairs agree the success of the campaign is significant as it demonstrates what can be accomplished when individuals work towards a common goal. By putting students first, donor support helps foster a community of giving on campus and shows students we believe in them. It’s a sentiment that’s echoed by Lashonda Mitchell, another 2017 SOS scholarship recipient. “I am ever so grateful to have people who believe in my education as much as I do,” she says. “Thank you for choosing me.”

As the University of Lethbridge wrapped the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2017, the recipients of the Shine On 50th Anniversary Fund scholarships were awarded. Established to celebrate the U of L’s golden anniversary, the scholarships exemplify alumni, staff, faculty and community coming together to help students shine brighter. More than 650 donors raised $65,000. “We are so excited to award the Shine On 50th Anniversary Fund scholarships to very deserving students and are so grateful to each and every donor who helped make these scholarships possible,” says Barry Knapp, director of development. “Thank you for helping us celebrate the U of L’s golden anniversary and creating this incredible legacy.” The first 10 students were awarded scholarships in 2017, including Gavin Broadhead. “I am very thankful to be a recipient of the Shine On scholarship,” he says. “I have worked extremely hard over the past three years in my post-secondary education and it’s nice to see it start to pay off. This scholarship money takes some of the stress away from my unavoidable financial payments; it will allow me to focus more energy and attention on my schooling. Thank you to all the donors who made this possible.”

The Difference One Scholarship Can Make The University of Lethbridge Senate kicked off 2017, the U of L’s 50th anniversary year, with the goal to raise enough funds to add a new, fully endowed scholarship to the Senate Award. As part of the campaign, a number of Senate members gathered at the U of L Call Centre to reach out to former members of Senate and raise funds for the award. One of those Senate members was retired chemistry instructor, Robert (Bob) McKay. “Early in the evening, I was on a call with a U of L alumnus and former Senate member,” McKay recalls. “We had a great chat about his time as a student and serving as SU president, and my time as one of the original members of the chemistry department in ’67 and my 37 years working with students.” They chatted about how much the University has changed over the years and how much McKay enjoyed seeing students progress into talented and educated individuals. When it was time to ask for a donation, McKay recited the standard lines, but says he couldn’t believe the response. “He asked me what the goal was. When I told him it was $35,000, he told me he would donate $37,000 — $1,000 for every year I taught at the U of L!” The alumnus on the other end of the call was Dan Laplante (BMgt ’88), a retired senator, former Board of Governors member and generous benefactor of the University. “I was moved by Senator McKay’s ongoing commitment to the U of L,” Laplante says. “After 37 wonderful years working at the University, he remains engaged as an active volunteer by serving on the Senate. Somehow our

20

paths have not crossed over the years; I do look forward to meeting with him someday to personally thank him for his continued commitment to our University.” The Senate wrapped up the year raising more than $63,000 — funds that directly support deserving students. “Students are at the heart of the University,” says U of L Chancellor Janice Varzari (BN ’90, MEd ’02). “I extend my sincere gratitude to all my colleagues on Senate, past and present, for the significant role they have played in making the U of L what it is today and for making a difference in the lives of many students through their support of the Senate Award. I also thank Dan for his early leadership and his very significant gift to kick start our campaign.”

U of L student, Solomon Ip, is one of the recipients of the Senate Award. The award, he says, is especially meaningful, and he shares these words: “I grew up in a lower-middle class family. We were never in poverty, but until my father found stable, year-round employment when I was nine, things were more difficult than my parents would have hoped for. As a result of these years, my parents were always searching to create a cushion of financial comfort in the event that something went horribly wrong for our family.

Today, receiving a scholarship always carries a feeling of grateful relief. I can rest easy, knowing that I do not have to agonize over how I will feed, clothe and house myself, a luxury that some of my peers do not have. I can focus completely on my academic work, instead of having academics come second to survival. Scholarships have meant different things to me over the years. When I was initially introduced to the concept, I was told that it was money that people give you for being a good student. A rather banal answer, but it convinced me to strive for excellence in academics, hoping I would be noticed as a “good student.” However, as I have matured, this perception has changed significantly. After a difficult fall 2017 semester, I came to understand that a scholarship is a representation of one’s trust. This is not simply the trust that the money be spent wisely, but it also represents the trust that the donor has in the recipient’s ability to make a difference in the world, the trust that the recipient will work against all disappointments and failures and emerge triumphant. As someone who struggles with self-doubt, this is a huge encouragement. Someone thinks highly enough of little old me that they want to place their trust in me; all I can do is express my gratitude. Thank you so very much for placing your trust in me and encouraging me at a time when I desperately needed it.

I will do my best — you can trust me on that.”

“Thank you so very much for placing your trust in me and encouraging me at a time when I desperately needed it.” Solomon Ip | Scholarship Recipient
