English Language and Speaking Requirements

English Language Proficiency

English is the primary language of instruction and communication at uLethbridge. Prior to registration, all undergraduate students must demonstrate English language proficiency sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction, written assignments and participation in tutorials and discussions, regardless of their citizenship status or country of origin. There are two types of English requirements that apply to applicants to uLethbridge:

1. English Language Proficiency (ELP): Admission requirement for all applicants to undergraduate programs 2. Spoken English Language Proficiency (SELP):

Admission requirement for applicants to programs offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences

English Language Proficiency (ELP) must be presented prior to admission and may be shown in a number of ways, including:

Alberta English Language Arts 30-1 or equivalent, with a minimum final (blended) grade of 75 per cent; a grade of 5 or higher IB Higher or Standardlevel English; a grade of 4 or higher AP English; a grade of B or higher in GCSE A/S-level or A-level English

Successful completion of a minimum of three consecutive years of full-time academic study in English at a secondary school or post-secondary institution in Canada or another country where English is recognized as the primary language

Successful completion of the Advanced Level of uLethbridge’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program

A score of at least 80 on the iBT, with scores of at least 16 on each of Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and a score of at least 18 on Writing on the most recent official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score, taken within the last two years.

Most recent official Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score, taken within the last two years,with an overall score of at least 6.0 and at least 6.0 in each band Refer to the English Language Proficiency section in Part 1 – Admission of the current Academic Calendar or see our web page at ulethbridge.ca/ross/admissions/elp for additional methods of meeting the ELP requirement, as well as for listings of countries exempt from the ELP requirement.

Spoken English Language Proficiency

In addition to the English Language Proficiency requirement for uLethbridge undergraduate admission, all applicants to the Faculty of Health Sciences must also meet the Spoken English Language Proficiency (SELP) requirement. This additional SELP requirement is essential because students must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues, instructors, health care professionals, and the public in a variety of settings to be successful in these programs.

Evidence of Spoken English Language Proficiency (SELP) must be presented prior to admission and may be shown in a number of ways, including:

Acceptable evidence of at least six consecutive years of full-time studies in a country and institution in which the primary language is English, including the successful completion of English Language Arts 30-1 or equivalent A score of at least 26 on the International Benchmark Test (iBT) Speaking section A score of at least 7.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Speaking band A score of at least 70 on the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Speaking sub-test A score of at least 3 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) Speaking section Current registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) or College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)
