Drs. Morlet (auditory neurophysiologist) and O’Reilly (pediatric neurotologist) are part of the Center for Pediatric Auditory and Speech Sciences, a consortium of labs in the Biomedical Research Department. Dr. Morlet directs the Auditory Psychoacoustics Lab and has many clinical translational research projects in cooperation with Dr. O’Reilly. 5

Schiller Grounds Care has a number of other brands in its portfolio which produce consumer and commercial landscaping, gardening & ground care equipment. The company has established its reputation for product innovation, quality, design, and value. Little Wonder is one of the oldest and most reputable brands in the landscaping industry, creating the first hand-cranked hedge trimmers in the 1920’s. The system involves a paddle-wheel propulsion unit that eliminates the need for hand and arm control of the oar, opening up the sport of rowing to those with more advanced disabilities.

The lack of access to the buried tribological interface is one of the primary barriers to progress in this area. This research group specializes in the development of in-situ methods to gain more direct access to interfacial processes and phenomena. Their research activities involve instrument design, software developments, materials synthesis, materials characterization, and surface analysis, in areas of interest such as healthcare, national security, and energy sustainability.

SimUCare develops technology worn by actors to simulate patients with complex imparements. SimUCare was founded 1 year ago by Amy Cowperthwait, a nursing instructor from the University of Delaware. All of SimUCare’s products in development and on the market have been created through the University of Delaware Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Senior Design.

The group works with people with a range of physical and mental impairments and provides custom support solutions and workshops that allow individuals to express themselves artistically. Their clinical program provides medical and surgical care to children and their families with OI, which can begin prenatally and continue into adulthood. The Program’s directing physicians are Drs. Michael Bober (Medical Genetics) and Richard Kruse (Orthopaedics).

Rabeet Ahmad, Grace McIlvain Faculty Advisor: Prof. Sujata Bhatia Sponsor: UD Physical Therapy The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy is to advance physical therapist practice by providing outstanding entry-level and post-graduate education, translating science to deliver quality clinical services, leading federally funded rehabilitation research, and training the next generation of rehabilitation researchers and leaders of our profession. This project was conceived by Dr. Sam Lee in UD PT, whose research focuses on the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) to improve functional ability in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). and is funded by a grant through the VentureWell Network to UD Mechanical Engineering. The emphasis of Dr. Lee’s work is on evaluating both the neuroprosthetic (short-term) and neurotherapeutic (long-term) effects of FES training interventions on children with CP.

The Perry Inititiave is a non-profit organization that inspire women to pursue careers in underrepresented areas of engineering and medicine. The Perry Initiative runs extracurricular workshops across the country for women high school and medical school students, reaching over 2,000 women annually. The organization has developed unique hands-on curriculum related to engineering, biomechanics, surgical skills, and medical diagnostics.

The Materials Science Department at University of Delaware has several strong focus areas, including polymers and composites, photovoltaics, and thin film materials, among others. This project was conceived and funded by Dr. Bob Opila in UD Materials Science.

Target markets include interventional cardiologists, interventional radiologists, and vascular surgeons. Leveraging the multi-disciplinary specialties at Penn Vet, PSC-CORL provides a refined platform of successful translation using experimental and naturally-occurring disease models. They partner with pharmaceutical and medical-device companies, government agencies, and academic institutions to meet a broad range of R&D needs.

Wergelis-Isaacson, Gnanadesikan Somasundaram Faculty Advisor: Sarah Rooney Sponsor: Go Get ‘Dem Wheelchair Racing Club Go Ge ‘Dem Wheelchair Racing Club was established in 2012 to improve the lives of disabled persons in Ghana, with a specific focus on disabled youth in rural parts of the country. The club uses sport as a tool to empower youth and adults from beginners to elite racers to set goals, build a social network, travel, train, compete and live fulfilling lives. Secondary aims include changing the public perception about disabled persons and developing internationally competitive wheelchair racing athletes from Ghana. As such, the club often collaborates with the National Paralympic Committee to promote Paralympic sports in the country and the West African sub-region. The club has also been introduced to the International Paralympic Committee and will continue to develop a strong working relationship with this important group.

Lab co-director Dr. Michele Lobo also directs the Super Suits Functional Fashion & Wearable Technology Program at The University of Delaware. This program aims to develop a range of low- to high-tech clothing to increase independence, self-confidence, function, and participation for users.

The goal of Formula SAE is to take the Engineering curriculum and apply it to a real-world industrial problem by building a prototype race car for a fictional single entry series. Student’s cars are not only judged based on their performance, but also the Engineering decisions the students have made in their design, weighing performance versus cost and reliability. Formula SAE challenges students to design a car that is quick, reliable, fuel efficient, and cost effective. Formula SAE was established at the University of Delaware in 1996. The team has competed in over 10 Formula SAE competitions and dozens of local autocrosses sanctioned by the SCCA. 17
