100,000 AT 100th

RED BULL FLUGTAG AN AMAZING 100,000 spectators packed the pier in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, to see 34 teams from all over Ireland enjoy the sunshine and take to the skies in their homemade flying machines as they competed in the 100th Red Bull Flugtag,. For the teams it’s a labour of love and lunacy; most of the crafts take around 1,000 hours to produce made from all sorts of materials, objects and even an old toilet was used! It’s the fifth time the event has landed on Ireland’s shores, having arrived here for the first time in 1999, and this year’s antics certainly didn’t disappoint the lively crowd, who roared encouragement for their favourite teams - everything from Air Force One to ‘Cake for a Queen’ who danced to Freddie Mercury’s ‘I want to Break Free’. Since its debut in Austria in 1991, Red Bull Flugtag has travelled the globe, from Miami to Marseille and Sao Paolo to Sydney. The distance record, set last year in the US at a Red Bull Flugtag in St Paul, Minnesota, stands at an impressive 63m. However, victory also rests on the flight crew’s look and feel. In addi-

tion, teams have 30 seconds atop the 30 meter ramp to impress the judging panel with a ‘performance’, before launching off the ramp for flight and the inevitable six meter drop into the water. A host of celebrity judges from the world of sport, entertainment and local dignitaries like Bernard Brogan, Síle and Gráinne Seoige and the

Cathaoirleach of Dun Laoghaire, Lettie McCarthy watched the efforts of these fantastic “men/women” and their flying machines. Presenters for the day were Aidan Power and Daniella Moyles of RTE’s ‘Bulletin TV’ who were also joined by Claire Solan Aidan’s radio co-host. For more details go to www.redbull.ie
