2011AnnualSession &ScientificAssembly

On behalf of the Commission on Continuing Professional Development and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians officers and staff, welcome to TAFP’s 2011 Annual Session and Scientific Assembly. We are pleased to have you at what is sure to be another successful conference. Based on your educational needs, the planning committee has developed a quality CME program with you in mind. The Annual Session schedule is filled with the latest topics from today’s medical headlines including “Pediatrics in Pictures: Something Swollen, Something Grew, Something Bumpy, Something Blue” with Paul Berman, M.D.; “5 Things I Wish I Knew Last Year” with Louis Kuritzky, M.D.; “An Evidence-Based Approach to Stroke Risk and Prevention” with Alan Gradman, M.D.; “Demystifying Accountable Care Organizations” with Patrick Carter, M.D.; “Common Thyroid Disorders in Primary Care” with Simona Scumpia, M.D.; and “Prevention, Identification, and Treatment of Osteoporosis” with Jay Cohen, M.D. To complement the educational experience, the Annual Session and Scientific Assembly will include an exciting array of exhibits and special events. The Exhibit Hall is open Friday and Saturday with exhibitors ready to meet your practice needs. Visit them to learn more about new services and products in the field, develop business relationships, and hear valuable information to improve your practice. While in the hall, stop by the research poster displays on Friday, and play the Treasure Hunt game to win a $100 gift certificate. Join your colleagues from across the state for TAFP’s special events including attendee favorites like Thursday’s Town Hall Legislative Meeting and the Members’ Reception. The star of the special events will surely be Saturday night’s casino-themed President’s Party held in the Chaparral Club on the 38th floor of the Sheraton Dallas Hotel when we’ll welcome incoming TAFP president I. L. Balkcom, IV, M.D., to his office. This year’s Annual Session and Scientific Assembly is designed just for you and we hope you have a wonderful time with your family medicine “family” in Dallas. Thank you for being a part of our program.

SAM Group Study Workshop on Health Behavior

Lonestar A1

As a part owner and the managing partner of the National Procedures Institute, TAFP is proud to bring the popular NPI Orthopedics for the Office 1 workshop to the 2011 Annual Session and Scientific Assembly. This CME workshop is an intensive, evidence-based review of examination and treatment techniques for musculoskeletal problems encountered in daily practice. Numerous studies demonstrate that more than 20 percent of all visits to primary care providers deal with these complaints. The pertinent history and physical examination techniques are reviewed. The functional anatomy of the joint as well as common mechanisms of injuries is stressed. After an initial review of the basics of clinical examination and a general approach to the evaluation and treatment of injuries are completed, a broad review of the benefits of joint aspiration and injection will occur. Why use a shotgun approach with medications that affect the entire body when a focused injection can take care of the problem?
