WINTER LANDSCAPING Mary Hill

Getting your yard ready for summer is easy; plant scads of flowers, aerate the lawn, fertilize, and mow. You are set! But, how do you make your yard standout during the winter months? Making your winter landscape shine can be easy as well. Here are few ways to increase your curb appeal during dreary snowy months.

Because Mary has moved many times throughout the country, she knows first hand that providing outstanding customer service and having great communication are essential to pleasing clients and helping them achieve their goals. With Mary’s engineering background and love of numbers she will ascertain your home is priced correctly to realize the maximum return on this, your largest investment. In addition to assisting her clients with buying and selling homes Mary also offers the additional perk of overseeing remodels to assist her clients with maximizing their return on this, their largest investment. Attention to detail and knowledge of the market are cornerstones of how Mary serves affluent clients with their Boulder area real estate needs.

Winter Landscaping Add a small tree. Place an extra Christmas tree wrapped in burlap or in a basket near the front door. Make certain your exterior lights are working properly and are clear of ice and snow. Keep the driveway and front walkway clear of ice and snow. Add some cold weather plants to your front entryway. Evergreens or plants with colorful berries will add interest. Clear the clutter. Put away all shovels, lawn equipment and toys after use. This will keep your yard looking its best. A lantern can give your entryway a charming, welcoming look. You can put one on the steps or hang one on a post. Use either a battery operated or a hard-wired one. A little paint goes a long way. Just painting your front door can transform the look of your house. Update your house numbers. Match the new numbers to the finish of your light fixtures and door hardware. You can buy either individual numbers or custom plaques. Hang a wreath on your front door. Think understated elegance. Bigger isn’t always better! Add a bird feeder to attract birds to your front yard. It will add color and life to an otherwise drab landscape. Line your walkway with bricks or pavers. This will add color, texture and width to your existing walkway. You can choose from stone, clay and concrete pavers. Replace the exterior light fixtures. These are just a few simple ways to add interest to your winter landscape. None of them will break the bank but each one will have a welcoming impact on the curb appeal of your home.

DON’T Forget the Hands

E LIF E m ag azine

The hands are one of the body parts that show ones true age as they are exposed to the elements.

DON’T FORGET THE HANDS TIAJA PIERRE When we are born, we have the prefect skin. As we age hormones change and we experience different things that affect our skin. For example one might think that they are helping by ensuring they have enough sunlight exposure to ensure they have enough Vitamin D. Unfortunately it is a double-edge sword as too much sun exposure without sunblock can lead to sun damage. Even though skin is the largest organ of the body, each area of skin is different. Some skin is thinner than others. Many times people think to only put sunblock on the face and body and forget the hands. The hands are one of the body parts that show ones true age as they are exposed to the elements. There are not currently many modalities to reverse the aging process of the hands. Knowing this, it is vital to not only use sunblock for the hands during the day but to moisturize them as well. There are several types of sunblocks and moisturizers that work differently depending on what one is looking to achieve. Here are several suggestions for various issues when it comes to ones hands; ELIFE m agazine

Photos by: Nati Melnychuk on Unsplash

Sunblock:

Supergoop Hand Screen This product is not only rated as a SPF 40 but is specifically for ones hands. The product if quickly absorbed and does not leave a film.

Age Spots:

Strivectin Volumizing Hand Treatment This cream is formulated with a brightening complex that helps to minimize age spots while hyaluronic acid and volumizing spheres work together to nourish the skin and prevent the loss of elasticity.

Crepey Skin:

Medix 5.5Retinaol + Ferulic Acid This richly formulated cream works to shrink the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots while improving skin tone and elasticity.

Anti-aging:

Goldfaden MD, Hands to Heart This cream has the ability to even out skin, diminish age spots and the appearance of wrinkles using Retinol.

Of course there are other issues that people experience with damage to their hands, but if one starts when they are younger and makes good habits, damage to the fragile skin of the hands can be minimized.

How to Support Your New Teen Driver

E LIF E m ag azine

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR NEW TEEN DRIVER Cheryl Maguire

“You’re going to hit the car in front of us!” I shouted at my 16-year-old son as I tried to slam on the imaginary brake from the passenger side of the car. As the parent of twin teens, my fear of my kids being in an accident is justified. According to the CDC, almost 2,400 teens were killed in 2019 and around 258,000 were treated in emergency rooms that year for injuries sustained in car accidents. In fact, automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for teenagers and one study reports that teens are most likely to get in an accident during the first three months after getting their driver’s license. It’s hard not to have these scary statistics in your head when you have a young driver behind the wheel. I don’t like roller coasters, or any other type of thrill ride, so teaching two teenagers how to drive has been a challenging experience. The pandemic has also made it difficult for new drivers to schedule drive time in driving schools—which leaves most of the teaching to parents who may not be ready for the challenge

ELIFE m agazine

So how should parents handle this daunting responsibility, especially when parentteen relationships are often fraught with conflict? “Parents need to meditate first and then cover their mouth with their hand while in the car with their teen,” says Dr. Laura Markham, clinical psychologist and author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids. Even though she was joking, there is some truth to the fact that parents are often too critical of their teens while driving—myself included. Since Markham offered this advice, I’ve actually physically put my hand over my mouth to remind myself that I don’t always need to voice my feedback. Before your teen gets behind the wheel for a driving lesson, Dr. Markham recommends the following suggestions:

1. Remember how it feels to be a new driver

Markham offers this reminder: You learned to drive and so will your child. You may not remember much about the experience, but try to recall how it felt and what you found helpful (or not).

2. Stay calm “The calmest parent should be the one who teaches the child,” says Markham. If you are anxious or stressed, you will be more likely to yell—which will only make your teen more anxious about the experience. If you are calm, it will help your teen feel calmer and increase their self-confidence, which means they will be more focused on driving.

3. Review the rules “Before you get in the car, review basic safety guidelines with your child,” says Markham. Instead of lecturing, highlight why the rules exist and ask questions to reinforce what they already know. This quick review will help build their confidence for the driving lesson ahead.

But even with the best intentions, there still might be times when you slam on the imaginary brake, grab the side of the car or even yell. “If you aren’t able to stay calm, no shame, no blame, it’s understandable,” says Markham. But, if this does happen, do you best to calm yourself down and apologize to your teen for your behavior. I’m happy to say that my teens got their driver’s licenses last week. And even though I’m no longer sitting in the passenger seat teaching them to drive, I still check in with them to answer any questions and support their newfound freedom. There were times with the road was bumpier than I would have liked, but I’m grateful we made the best of the journey!

4. Save the advice for later “Do not give your child feedback while they are driving a moving vehicle,” Markham recommends. Before your teen gets behind the wheel, let them know that you will wait to discuss their driving experience until the car is parked. This will reassure your teen that they can focus on driving without interruptions. Of course, if it’s a matter of safety, speak up—calmly.

5. Keep your eye on the horizon You don’t want your teen to think you don’t have confidence in their ability to drive, so the less you say in the moment, the better.

THE MARSHALL FIRE JOHN SMALL

pho to c re d it: G er r y M or rel l

E L IFE m agazine

For the past several weeks from the New York Times to the Denver Post, and I would imagine every other professional newspaper in between, the crucial debate has raged - who is responsible for the origin of the fire that cost over 520 million dollars, destroyed over 990 structures and possibly has taken two human lives?

A Little About The Author John Small

has taught High School English and History courses for 40 years and College Education and English courses for the past 25. He has been the copy editor for ELIFE and Denver Colorado Luxury magazines, contributing multiple articles for the past four and two years respectively. John lives with his wife and son in New York. ELIFE m agazine

Two Augusts ago, a close friend of mine who lived in Boulder for 45 years passed away from chronic heart disease, whose business was in Louisville, as was his girlfriend’s business and house. As from what the media accounts have revealed, those business areas and the home, as well as the entire neighborhood (and others surrounding it) are all gone - completely engulfed by the fire’s path. Along with more than three Louisville neighborhoods, 6,000 more acres, many in Superior, were also destroyed. Many businesses owners in Louisville and in Superior have publicly lamented their losses, but were collectively thankful that their lives and the lives of their patrons were spared. Boulder County Sheriff, Joe Pelle stated that it was a miracle, due to the vast damage there wasn’t over 100 missing [sic]. As for the cause of the most devastating fire in the state’s history, it is commonly believed that the origin stems from a property along Colorado 93 and Marshall Road’s intersection in unincorporated Boulder County upon the property of a religious sect, whose own origin is not “Coloradan” per se. The sect is originally from Tennessee, beginning as a Youth Bible Study Group in the 70’s, whose residency (one of two) in the state has been established for over a decade. Now, it is an international religious sectarian group with self-governing communes in both North and South America, Europe, Australia and as far away as Japan. The Yellow Deli, on Pearl Street in Boulder is one of several businesses run by the sect. Another possiblity, some say is an underground coal fire sparked the Marshall fire. The Marshall Coal Mine is located just south of the Marshall Mesa trailhead off Highway 93. It is one of 38 abandoned coal mines in the state that are listed to have some level of fire activity. Either way, the shed (or small barn) fire and its billowing smoke, desperately being fought by local firefighters, that several neighbors and other passerby witnesses claim they saw has all but been confirmed as the point of origin, an “accident” conflagration, blown by freakish 100 mile per hour winds causing the mass destruction and the taking of possibly two lives as of this time. Still, two lives are “two too many” - accident or otherwise! Luckily, one person has surfaced from the three unfortunates, originally missing, who lost everything. The human remains of one of the last two missing have just been discovered. The remains of the 91 year-old grandmother, however have yet to be uncovered. Those, are by far the most important losses, for the inanimate ones can certainly be rebuilt in time, the extreme cost and labor, notwithstanding. So, the question still remains - was the catastrophic conflagration an accident? I believe that the experts in The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and now, The F.B.I. (who has also been called to action) will find the origin, the loss of human life, however can never be “solved”, making this Holiday Season Fire quite a shame. Thoughts and prayers are with all who lost something or everything, especially the surviving members of the deceased.

Winterize Your Pets: Staying Safe in Cold Weather

E LIF E m ag azine

WINTERIZE YOUR PETS:

STAYING SAFE IN COLD WEATHER JAIME BESSKO

ELIFE m agazine

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS WINTER: •

Instead of extended walks in cold temperatures, take your dog on shorter, more frequent walks.

If you must buy ice melt, be sure it is pet safe.

If you walk your dog near storefronts or roads that use rock salt, do not allow your dog to lick their paws clean. Instead, clean their paws for them.

Clumps of snow can be painful in a dog’s paw. Help them out by scooping packed snow out of their paw when they seem distressed or if they’re standing on 3 legs. You may need to trim the fur on your dog’s paws in the winter months to reduce painful ice clumps.

Very young, old or wet animals are at greater risk of hypothermia and frostbite.

Provide dog jackets or sweaters (and sometimes boots).

Senior pets need close monitoring and careful consideration in the colder weather. Arthritis worsens, joints stiffen and they are less nimble to recover from slips on ice.

Parked cars get very cold quickly.

Some dog breeds, like the Alaskan Klee-Kai, have a very dense coat which insulates heat to give them a higher tolerance for cold temperatures. Most dog breeds (AND CATS!) are not equipped to withstand very cold weather. So if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pets. Bring them inside.

If you’re concerned about the welfare an animal, PLEASE SPEAK UP! Attempt to have a polite conversation with the animal’s owner first. If need be, contact local law enforcement agencies to follow through. Jaime Bessko lives in Erie with her husband, 2 boys, 2 dogs and 2 cats. She is the owner of ERIE DOG CO, LLC, specializing in behavior modification for dogs through immersive overnight board and train programs. She has always had a way with animals and made a great impact training service dogs at International Hearing Dog in Henderson, Colorado. Jaime’s philosophy on working with dogs is to communicate clearly, be consistent, praise your dog and HAVE FUN! If you want help enjoying your dog more, reach out at eriedogco.com and follow @ErieDogCo online.
