SENIOR PASTOR’S MESSAGE

g n i n o i s i v n of E e c a l AP FOR e n o y r e Ev 0 9

DEAR TRINITARIANS, Last month, I traveled with several Hosting Pastors and Board Members to be part of Trinity@Jakarta’s first anniversary celebrations. From the dinner on Saturday night to service the following day, the atmosphere pulsated with joy as every milestone, victory, and breakthrough was celebrated (pg 28). Getting Trinity@Jakarta off the ground was a brand-new venture for us, and God has been faithful to provide everything we needed to take this fledgling church to where she is now. When we chose to enter this open door, He provided the places, people, and finances needed to make a great impact in this city. Trinity@Jakarta is not the only place where our impact has grown and accelerated. From one service in July of last year, Trinity@Bukit Batok now includes DiscoveryLand and Chinese services (pg 24). When Risen Christian Assembly held their inaugural service on August 5, Pastor Sabrina Chow and 80 Trinitarians celebrated the new things that God will do through this church plant (pg 42). From being a nomadic congregation to having a place of our own, our journey of faith continues with the ongoing redevelopment of Trinity@Adam (pg 12). Currently, piling works are in progress and the interior design is being finalized. I am so grateful for the dedication of our Building Committee who has worked tirelessly with our architects and designers to refine the look and feel of our expanded storehouse. As I see the proposed designs for

the rooms and façade, it excites me to share them with you in the days to come. Every victory that we have experienced so far testifies of a faithful God who has been with us every step of the way. What’s exciting is that He’s not done with us yet. In this Decade of Expansion, God will continue to open doors for us to include more people to this spiritual family – to make Trinity a place for everyone. Soon, additional worship centers will be launched in Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and beyond. Without God, we cannot. Without us, God will not. Trinitarians, we must recognize that God needs us to be His conduit for blessings (pg 54). If we are to move forward into the things of God, we must allow God to captivate us with His vision – to allow the power of our imagination to take us from the natural and into the supernatural (pg 64). It’s time to make a fresh commitment to His expansive plans, confident that He goes before us. As we head into Vision Rally and Vision Weekend, dare to dream big dreams for God. It’s time to see further, look deeper, and imagine all the possibilities. Get ready, get set, and get going!

ENVISION

Since the 1970s, Trinity has evolved from nomads to becoming owners of three freehold properties. Here’s the journey of faith we took for our very first home.

1 1

1970-1980

Wayfarers We began our journey as nomads in the 1970s. Always on the move, we rented various premises for our services and programs – Hillcrest, Hotel Equatorial, RELC, American School, NTUC Conference Hall, and World Trade Centre, to name a few. When these rented premises had other functions, we scrambled to find other locations for service. Sometimes, these premises would be too small for the congregation.

What’s more, Trinitarians had to carry, set up, and bring down musical instruments, audio visual equipment, projectors, tables, and chairs. It was a tedious process that took place every single week. Despite all these inconveniences, Trinitarians served heartily and the church continued to grow. With a vision for church growth and a place to call our own, the search for a land began!

A clarion call to purchase the land

Our own land at last!

For the past 11 years, Trinity was constantly on the move. Would this be our Promised Land?

Trinitarians rose to the call to give to the building of God’s house. The young congregation gave sacrificially. People gave hard cash, their savings, and even mortgaged their homes.

The choice piece of land more than one acre was freehold and centrally located at 21 and 23 Adam Road. Yet, the cost of the land was over two million dollars, a very large amount in those days, and had to be paid in full by March 31.

1984

God diverts the drain Trinity gets approval from the relevant authorities to divert the drain separating 21 and 23 Adam Road – shifting it to the right side of 21 Adam Road so that the two plots of land would not be divided.

1 3

On March 6, we paid off the first lot of land at 21 Adam Road. It was a victorious day. After years of nomadic experience, God has finally enabled us to find a place we could call our very own. Three weeks later on March 31, payment for the second lot of land at 23 Adam Road was made!

1988

Woes aplenty but God made all things possible Bank woes – With no bank wanting to finance churches in those days, securing a loan for the construction of Trinity@Adam was a challenge. When it seemed like all banks had closed its doors on us, God provided a bank to finance us, one that gave us very good rates too! Construction woes – Construction works finally began at 21 Adam Road. The land at the Adam Road site comprised mainly of marine clay making it a difficult site to build on. The leadership’s vision for Trinity@Adam was to accommodate as many people as possible. We wanted a balcony to be added to pack in more people. Together with our team of consultants, we managed to design and build a mezzanine level in the Auditorium!

1990

21 Adam Road completed We finally had our very own church building! A dedication service for 21 Adam Road and a series of celebrations were held.

We symbolically burned the mortgage papers on stage to show that we would soon pay for the building. The following Sunday, Trinitarians showed a tremendous display of unity and vision as we gave over one million dollars for the building of 23 Adam Road.

2016

Double celebrations It was a significant year as we celebrated our 25th anniversary with the dedication of Trinity@Adam on July 30 in our new 1000-seat Auditorium.

Closing for redevelopment 26 years after moving into our first home, it was time for us to move once more. On August 3, Trinity@Adam closed her doors for a season of redevelopment and on August 20, Trinitarians came together to worship as one church in Trinity@Paya Lebar.

Construction works begin! To build as big a storehouse as we possibly could for a future harvest, many considerations were looked into. After many rounds of negotiations, and countless returns to the drawing board, Trinity begins construction of Trinity@Adam with a ground breaking ceremony on April 25 and the signing of contract with the main contractor on May 9.

Just as good people leave an inheritance for their children (Proverbs 13:22), our buildings represent a spiritual inheritance for our children and our children’s children, building storehouses for the future harvest of souls. In July 2017, Trinity followed God’s call to expansion by starting Trinity@Bukit Batok. Led by Pastors Melvin Lim and Wendy Ong, this lighthouse in the West has grown tremendously over the past year.

2 3

July 9,

2017 332 people came for Trinity@Bukit Batok’s first service, hosting 15 first-time visitors and leading two people to make decisions for Christ.

I work in NTU and I have been sharing Christ with my colleagues, students and family members for many years. When Trinity@Bukit Batok opened, the Lord inspired me to invite them since it is in the West and very near to many of their homes. At the inaugural service, one of my students attended the first service with me. As an international student, she was homesick and lonely. She really enjoyed the worship and felt God’s love for her. She wants to find out more about Jesus and has

even come for my carecell a few times. I am very encouraged God used me to be a vessel of blessing to her. As I continue to honor God by being His messenger, I hold on to His promise found in Acts 16:31: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household.” Recently, my sister and her daughters accepted my invitation for service. I believe that Trinity@Bukit Batok will be a place where my family will encounter the love of God and make decisions to follow Jesus!

Eunice Chua North District

July 30,

2017 Just three weeks after the start of the first service, Trinity@Bukit Batok expands to include an 11am service.

Since I live in Bukit Gombak, Trinity@Bukit Batok has made coming to church very convenient. I used to take up to an hour to reach Trinity@Paya Lebar. Now my commute is only 20 minutes.

I don’t have much experience in evangelism, my carecell has helped so much by giving me advice and connecting with my oikos. Indeed, Trinity is a place where we never walk alone!

Beyond that, having a worship center in the West makes it easier to invite my oikos for service. From customers to neighbors, I’ve asked many to come. I thank God two of them have agreed to join me. Since

I am so excited to see God do more through Trinity@Bukit Batok. As we continue to shine our light in the West, I believe that many lives will be touched and transformed for His glory!

I thank God for the divine encounter with Trinitarians at a coffee shop in our neighborhood. Since we live in Hillview, going to Trinity@Bukit Batok is very convenient for us. While my husband and I attend the main service, our son Owen can

attend DiscoveryLand in the next hall and our daughter Rachel (age 15) can be part of IGNYTE in Trinity@Paya Lebar. I am so grateful that Trinity is a place where our entire family can worship God together.

Pauline Siow West District Throughout DiscoveryLand, I learn about God’s Word with my friends and try to share about

God with my oikos at school. I’m glad to serve in God’s house and trust Him at all my heart!

Trinity@Bukit Batok expands once again with the start of a Chinese service. Led by Pastor Christina Onn, 158 people (including seven first-time visitors) filled the movie hall to worship God and hear His Word.

2 5

The launch of the Chinese service at Trinity@Bukit Batok means that we can take the Gospel into the heartland. Carecell members who could

not attend Trinity@Paya Lebar have been faithfully coming for service here. We also have many Mandarin-speaking oikos coming for service!

Kwok Shou Vien On the morning of the first Chinese service, a group of faithful brothers and sisters came as early as 7:15 am to help with the setup. By 7:45 am, everything was put in place,

RGB and the worship team was practicing, and the Celebration Hosts had been briefed. It was an incredible demonstration of unity as we embark on this new venture together.

Many Trinitarians faithfully carry, set up, and take down equipment week in and week out at Trinity@Bukit Batok. We thank God for their passion to serve this house! When Pastor Dominic called for 150 Trinitarians to pioneer Trinity@Bukit Batok, my wife Cindy and I felt a conviction to give of ourselves to serve God in this new worship center. On hindsight, we saw how God had been preparing us for Trinity@Bukit Batok. In December 2015, we moved to Jurong so that we could take care of Cindy’s mother. In 2016, my storage warehouse also moved from Toh Guan to Tuas, making my trips to the warehouse much more convenient. Our family has been blessed to be a part of Trinity@Bukit Batok’s

early days. It has been exciting to see God move in the West with services at full capacity and services expanding to include DiscoveryLand and Chinese Ministry. We are greatly awed and humbled that the little things we do have come together to make a big impact for God. We are believing that God will open up a parcel of land in the West so that Trinity@Bukit Batok can become an even bigger lighthouse and storehouse for the harvest. All glory to our God whose presence is with us, who sustains and guides us, who protects and provides for us wherever He has called us to.

Alex Loo South District When Pastor Dominic first made the call to open a center in the West, we were eager to be part of the pioneering team and offer our support wherever we could. Serving alongside other Trinitarians has established a “kampong spirit,” especially when we see the DiscoveryLand children helping to strike set. We are also very encouraged by our pastors who will roll up their sleeves and serve alongside us!

It has been so heartening to see such exponential growth in Trinity@Bukit Batok. In the very early days, we saw many FTVs come each week and it was encouraging to see some of them commit to Trinity@Bukit Batok. As we offered the little that we had to serve God, He has used it for His big purpose. Our desire is to see Trinity@Bukit Batok become a place we can call our own!

Robin Soo and Audrey Koh South District (Testimonies have been edited for clarity and length.)

The growth we’ve seen at Trinity@Bukit Batok is just a preview of what He wants to do in the West. As we continue our search for land, keep praying and believing that God will open the doors for us to expand into a permanent storehouse — a place where even more lives can be transformed and empowered for His glory.

Birthed Out of Prayer

Every mighty move of God is birthed from prayer. Whenever God gets ready to do a great work, He sets His people praying. And that was exactly how Trinity@Jakarta started — as a prayer meeting. My husband and I were living in Singapore for 15 years. In 2016, God began to direct us to return to Jakarta. It ran against every fiber of our being as we lost our business in Jakarta before. It would also be hard to find another church like Trinity in Jakarta. In our struggle, God assured us of His plans. It was at this time that Pastor Dominic shared about Trinity’s expansion plans into Jakarta.

As I heard it, I was so excited! I came to understand what God was wanting to do in and through us for this expansion. As various pastors approached us to help start the church, we sought the Lord. He showed us, like a GPS directing our paths, He was directing every step of the way. In obedience, we stepped out in faith to serve as a Carecell Leader and a member of the Board. We were amazed how Trinitarians came, wave after wave. We joined the Trinity Wave teams in prayerdrives and prayer meetings. God showed us many visions and promises about Trinity@Jakarta being a place of transformation. The birthing process wasn’t easy but we continued to persevere in prayer. We saw lives being transformed and a new community being formed! We are very blessed to be part of God’s pioneering work here! — Rose Merry Maruli, Director

Since the launch of Pastor Dominic’s six-week Potential to Fulfillment Seminars at Gedung Metro Pasar Baru, the venue has been packed with people eager to live the transformed life.

Launch of Potential to Fulfillment Weekly Seminars

After hearing that Trinity was starting a church in Jakarta, I decided to visit one of the Potential to Fulfillment seminars. At the seminar, Pastor Dominic shared from Isaiah 43:19. ‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.’ With that prophetic revelation, something leaped within me. I felt God renewing my life’s purpose. I was energized and saw a divine shift taking place in my marketplace ministry.

I am humbled by how God has used me, enabling me to thrive in all that I do. Today, I serve as a Spiritual Parent and have even gone on our first missions trip to Bogor. Care and Connect Events to Reach Young Adults

Trinity@Jakarta began with a handful of young adults, who looked around and believed for Trinity@Jakarta to be a place where many other young adults can discover their God-given destinies and be a part of something bigger than themselves. Our first event was an exciting one when Trinity’s Ministry Interns from Singapore partnered with us to reach out to the young adults in Jakarta. There was such a vibrant atmosphere as we shared about life. These events should be a norm so that young adults from all over Jakarta can continue to gather together and have meaningful conversations! Since then, we have had regular events and seen many more young adults joining the Trinity@Jakarta family. — Edward Welton, Sales

Celebration Services Begin

With first time visitors joining us at our weekly seminars, and a growing hunger for more of God, we started our Celebration Services. In these weekly services, more people can encounter God and experience His transforming power. Over 10 years ago, my family and I were based in Singapore. Those were difficult times as I struggled financially. There were days where I could hardly put food on the table for my wife and four children, aged eight, seven, three, and two then. In my family’s darkest moments, the pastors and carecell members from Trinity were a beacon of light for us. Through them, God provided a roof over our heads, food, a job for me, and education for my children.

When we came back to Jakarta, we attended different churches but could not find a church that we could call home. When we heard that Trinity was starting a church in Jakarta, my family and I remembered how Trinity walked with us, and committed to be part of this house! God has since prospered my family and placed me in positions of influence in my business. I thank God for His provision and restoration. I’m so grateful for His faithfulness in leading me to a home church, into which I can tithe! — Johannes Waleleng, Entrepreneur

Yet 25 Faith Promise cards were collected and a total of IDR 705,950,000 was committed to the Lord to build a house so that many more people can encounter God through Trinity@Jakarta! Beyond attending church and enjoying the spiritual food of this house, the decision to walk up to the front of the hall to drop my Faith Promise card into the box was a declaration of my commitment to God. It is a privilege to be a pioneer here at Trinity@Jakarta and I know this offering will impact many lives in Indonesia. As I looked around, I was deeply impacted as I witnessed every person in that room rise from their seats to drop in their Vision Faith Promise card. Official Launch of Trinity@Jakarta

God provided a new place for Trinity@Jakarta, signifying a new beginning and open doors to a new season! We officially launched Trinity@Jakarta as we celebrated the move to Hotel Aryaduta, Jakarta. I started visiting Trinity@Jakarta in December 2017 after a season of looking for a home church. Coming here felt like an answered prayer because I felt the presence of God and I have learned a lot from different ones in this community.

It’s amazing being a part of this expansion. I found my renewed purpose in God and serve as a Celebration Host. I’ve also discovered a new joy in encouraging my friend to know God more and sharing what I have learned about God from my church family. I pray that we will continue to grow and be ready to step into all that God has for us in this Decade of Expansion. — Ronny Hartawan, Investment Product Specialist

2018 Expanding Our Tent ─ Fellowship Carecell Multiplication

A miraculous planting of the Lord happened as 10 people came together in incredible unity and our second fellowship carecell was formed. My business was going through a rough patch and in need of a miraculous turnaround. It was then that Pastor Dominic preached about the Dawn of a New Day. Even though service was being streamed live in our hall, the presence of God was so strong throughout the service and my wife and I responded to the altar call to receive a breakthrough. Beyond the service, we experienced the ministry of the community as Pastor Janice and Grace came to visit my wife and I in our home and prayed with us.

Thereafter, we experienced tremendous breakthroughs! Miracles after miracles manifested in our business and in our lives! We decided to join a carecell. It is a place where we are able to share our lives deeply and freely. We also received a new-found joy to share the goodness of God. From the very start of Trinity@Jakarta, God has provided everything we needed. Over the past year, we have seen God’s miraculous provision of place, people, and finances.

A Journey of

The congregation has been growing steadily both in number and in faith. God has faithfully provided us with new and larger worship locations so that we can accommodate the increasing numbers and have room for expansion.

God’s Provision The Provision of

Our first place of meeting at Pasar Baru came about the moment Senior Pastor Dominic declared we were expanding into Jakarta. The second location, Hotel Aryaduta, materialized just as we were searching for a more central location to hold our services. Our new, bigger service location at Everbest Tower came into being just as we needed more physical space to accommodate new expressions of ministry.

The Provision of

Trinitarians from Singapore with a passionate heartbeat for Jakarta committed to serve through the Waves teams. Various Trinitarians from Jakarta availed their homes and office spaces for God’s kingdom purposes. People with the right connections also came alongside to make headway in establishing Trinity@Jakarta.

God also provided miraculously in the area of finances. When we entered into God’s covenant with us for Trinity@Jakarta, His blessings overflowed in the lives of our congregation! Many testified about the breakthroughs which empowered generous giving so that the church can be positioned on strong foundations to do greater things for the kingdom.

rinitarians are blessed to be a blessing and we want to be able to bless the community around us. With a vision to do more to meet the societal and humanitarian needs of various communities, we raised more than IDR 25,000,000 through the sale of our first anniversary limited edition batik for Yayasan Peduli Pelayanan Masyarakat. Trinity@Jakarta is committed to fulfilling the Great Commission – to win souls, disciple our community of faith, and raise impactful strategic leaders for the kingdom. With Pastor Larry Lee and his wife Pauline seeded to Trinity@Jakarta, we see greater continuity of discipleship taking place. I believe more Spiritual Parents and leaders will be raised for this house! While Trinity@Jakarta began with a vision to reach and empower the English-speaking community, we recognize the need to be a blessing to two more major language groups in Jakarta – Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia. In the near future, we will be launching our services that include Bahasa Indonesia and Mandarin language translations. God has mighty plans for Trinity@Jakarta! I believe God is calling Trinity@Jakarta to plant many more worship centers in Indonesia. Can you envision having multiple worship centers? This vision may seem large, but it’s not impossible! We must never be afraid of failing. The biggest failure is when we don’t even try or attempt anything! What God has done in Trinity@Jakarta’s first year is an unyielding testimony of His power and provision. As we branch out into new arenas of ministry, know that God will certainly bring it to fulfillment!

Get ready! Get set! Get going!

TODAY IS A DAY OF HISTORYMAKING. THERE IS A FRESH OIL ANOINTING AND NEW WINESKIN, FORMING THE VERY INGREDIENTS FOR REVIVAL AND AN OVERFLOWING POWER IN THE HOLY SPIRIT. Pastor Dominic Yeo In this Decade of Expansion, God is calling Trinity to start new ministries, reach out to new people, begin new associations and collaborations, and make a new impact for His Kingdom. Every move towards expansion requires us to step out in faith. Following Pastor Dominic’s call to establish new communities of faith, four ministers and 80 members would embark on a new adventure with God as part of Trinity’s first church plant. Its first base of operations will be in Trinity@Lavender – a property now set aside for all future church plants.

Led by Pastor Sabrina Chow, the vision and values of Risen Christian Assembly (RCA) was birthed from a season of praying, fasting, and prophetic journaling. While separate and distinct, the DNA of Trinity lives on through RCA’s pioneering spirit, with its emphasis on community life, and a commitment to evangelism. For two months, every Risenite worked tirelessly to get RCA ready. We gave our time, talents, and treasures, and each of us took on at least three roles in this fledgling community. When RCA finally opened its doors for the inaugural service on August 5, it was a time of great celebration. In this atmosphere of excitement and expectancy, 250 people filled the Sanctuary, eager to see what God had in store for this new church. Led by a worship team and choir, service started with songs of praise. “Jesus be the centre of our church,” the congregation declared as God’s presence filled the room.

GOD CALLS US TO SEE WITH EYES OF FAITH AND TRUST THAT HIS PROMISES WILL BLOSSOM IN OUR LIVES.

We were honored to have Apostle Naomi Dowdy and Pastor Dominic Yeo in our midst, their words encouraging us to persevere in leaving behind a legacy of faith for the generations to come. Reading from Isaiah 43:18-21, Pastor Sabrina’s first message to the congregation, A New Season in a New Day, exhorted us to claim God’s new promises by shaking off the past, seeing the vision God has for us, and stepping up in faith to claim it. Just as seedlings spring up from the ground, the Lord is moving and doing new things in our midst. Though our physical eyes cannot perceive what is happening, God calls us to see with eyes of faith and trust that His promises will blossom in our lives. The celebration of new beginnings continued as everyone adjourned downstairs for Food & Fellowship, a lunch feast prepared by Risenites for all attendees. Amidst the laughter and conversations, testimonies of God’s goodness could be heard throughout the hall and one visitor even made a decision for Christ! We are excited to see more of the new things God has in store for RCA! Indeed, if God has led us this far, He will lead us all the way!

After my Cambodia missions trip in June 2017, I asked God for a ministry where I could serve. When Pastor Dominic shared about the church plant during Watchnight, I felt that this was God’s calling but still wrestled with Him during Time Alone With God. “Are you sure this is what You want?” I asked Him many times. It was on Missions Weekend that God affirmed this new direction for my life. “Listen to God’s voice and not others.” Those were the prophetic word prayed over me during the altar call. In subsequent Times Alone with God, every reading was about stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. I knew God was stretching me in this new season to do His Kingdom work. Flora Loh

As I was doing my Time Alone With God in April 2017, the message of Genesis 12:1– God calling Abraham to leave his country to a land that God will show him – spoke to me. A few days later, Dr Goetz shared the same verse at service. Initially, I thought God meant a job change but things started to become clearer when Pastor Dominic announced the inception of Risen Christian Assembly in 2018. Could this be the answer that I was looking for? I prayed for God’s guidance and asked for a sign – that Pastor Sabrina would invite me to join the church plant. When she did, I was completely assured that RCA is where God wants me to be. Tan Soon Ann

Trinity has been my home church for a number of years. It was the place where I met my wife Qiuru and where we both grew in the Lord. Our spiritual family was at Trinity and we felt very comfortable being here. Yet, we have been thinking about a change in our ministry and asked God to lead us in the right direction. Initially, we didn’t consider RCA because we never thought to move out from Trinity. That changed when we found out that some of our leaders and carecell members had decided to join the church plant. After hearing about RCA’s vision, we felt this was something we wanted to be a part of. We knew this would mean stepping out of our comfort zone and serving God in a greater capacity. After a season of praying and seeking God, we felt strongly that this was what God has prepared us for, and we made the decision to take that step of faith and join RCA. Ronald Chao

I was led by the Spirit to join RCA when Pastor Sabrina shared about the values and mission of the new church. I’ve always loved being in a smaller church because it feels more like a family to me. “Move over to RCA!” God told me. Honestly, I was taken aback by this. After sharing this prompting with my husband Jonathan, he didn’t feel that this was the right move until God spoke to him during his quiet time. We are involved in a number of ministries in RCA. He’s in Sound and Photography while I’m in Corporate Communications and Videography. As we stepped up to serve and be part of this church plant, we have seen God’s faithfulness in our lives. His streams of blessings flowed in ways we did not expect! Gloria Boo

Trinitarians since their secondary and university school days respectively, board members Khong Yew Cheong and Phillip Choo are men who have seen Trinity grow to be the church that she is now.

Read on as they share their journey with Trinity and find out what inspires them to be living testimonies in their various spheres of influence.

P

What is your Trinity story? Y When I was in Secondary One, my aunt asked my mom if I could join the Royal Rangers on Saturdays at Trinity@Adam. Over time, I started attending Sunday classes at Trinity@Adam. I am so grateful for that time because it was through people like Sister Theresa that I became anchored in the Word of God. However, I didn’t get serious with God until I was in university. In Chi Alpha (the predecessor of Campus Ministry), we were challenged to think

about what we wanted from life. It was a place of decision where we had to choose to either be hot or cold for God. After working in Melbourne for a few years, my wife Michelle and I came back to Singapore and joined the West District where I became a Carecell Leader in 2012. Two years later, I became a Section Leader, a role I continue to serve today.

P I accepted Christ in Secondary Four through my CCA (co-curricular activity) schoolmates. A few years later in 1987, together with my girlfriend (now wife Siong Yu), we visited Trinity when services were held at the World Trade Centre. Besides the worship and preaching, what attracted us to Trinity was its focus on missions and evangelism – it was a church that looked outward. After making Trinity our home church, the first thing we did was get involved in the home cells

(the predecessor to carecells). We saw the value of this community of faith in helping us build our relationship with God. Moreover, we believed it was the most direct way to touch lives, help people walk through issues and grow in their relationship with Christ. Even after spending some time overseas, we came back to Trinity to serve in the carecells. Today, we both serve as Section Leaders in the South District.

Tell us more about what you do in the marketplace. How has your marketplace experience translated into your role as a leader in Trinity and vice versa? Y After graduating from NTU with a degree in finance, I started my career as an auditor in one of the big-four accounting firms. Since auditing is a skill set that transcends industries, I’ve had opportunities to work in various sectors. Currently, I work as the Corporate Controller of a global luxury travel company. While there are aspects of my marketplace experience that are useful in ministry, I find that my experience as a Carecell Leader and Section Leader has shaped how I lead in the marketplace. When I meet with my members or lead portions of the carecell, these are the times where I learned the values and ethos of leadership.

My relationship with God also helped me balance the many aspects of life. When I first started working, I struggled a lot in serving God while pursuing my career. Many of my peers focused on their career to the detriment of everything else in their life. A wise person shared this piece of advice with me: that there is a season for everything – a season to focus on your career, a season to build your family, a season for ministry. There is also a season where we can manage everything. What’s important is identifying what season we’re in – to be in complete alignment with what God wants us to do.

P After graduating from NTU with a degree in accounting, one of the first things I knew was that I would not become an auditor, deciding instead to pursue in-house accounting roles. I spent many years in finance and took on CFO roles for various companies (including listed ones) before moving into my current role as the Managing Director of a specialty chemical company. As we grow and prosper in the marketplace, I believe that we should also grow in serving God’s Kingdom. Many of the skills I have learned, such as managing complexities and organizationbuilding, can be applied in the Board and ministry

context. Conversely, being a leader in Trinity has provided valuable experience for the marketplace because it is the place I learned to develop and live by Christian values and principles. When faced with complex situations in the marketplace, it’s important to know the values and principles by which certain decisions are made so that we can stand by them. When people see that we are consistent in living out godly values and principles, it develops credibility because they don’t need to second-guess our motives or intentions.

Describe your role in the Board and how it has changed over the years. Y

I was brought into Trinity’s Board in 2005 because of my knowledge and experience in finance. Though I’m not an expert in Human Resources, my various marketplace roles have given me exposure to these matters.

Since then, I have served as the Head of either the Finance or the Human Resources Committee. In both committees, my role is to ensure the welfare of our finances and our people. We ensure that the right checks and balances are in place so that there is assurance that the church is wisely stewarding the resources it has been entrusted with.

When Trinitarians give their treasures to this house, the church has a responsibility to use and steward these assets for Kingdom ventures.

I have been part of the Board since 2010, using my marketplace experience in the Finance Committee either as a member or its Chair. This year, I’ve taken on a new role as the Chair of the Estate Management Committee. While it may seem like something entirely new, I’ve been in several Committees in the past eight years – giving me exposure to many aspects of the church operations. This is true for most members of the Board, making us flexible to serve in whatever Committee we are placed in for the year.

P

After talking to Pastor Dominic and a few members of the Board, I put my name up for election because I saw the need for strong governance and expertise regarding the church’s finances.

How have you seen Trinity become the church she is now? What has changed and what remains the same? Y So much has changed since the days of the Trinity@Adam bungalows. The church has gotten bigger in size, space, and influence. Many pastors and ministerial staff have come in and moved on to new seasons outside of Trinity.

Yet, the thing that has not changed about Trinity is the faithfulness of her people. There are many Trinitarians who have been in this church for decades and have raised their children in this house. Our values have remained the same and Trinitarians remain focused on pursuing our God-given vision.

As a forward-looking church, the only constant is change.

This “change of guard” has been sucessfully carried out in Trinity and it is something I am really proud of. We have a church that is generous to bless others through releasing ministers into other areas of Kingdom-building. It demonstrates the humility of our leadership to recognize and support individual callings by adapting to each new season.

P

It has been exciting to see new and younger leaders and pastors rise up in Trinity. In the 1990’s the church was led by an anointed group of pastors headed by Pastor Dowdy. Today, Trintiy moves forward under the strong leadership of another team headed by Pastor Dominic. 5 1

Complete this sentence: I am proud to be a Trinitarian because… Y …we are people who love God and serve Him. When my wife and I came back from Melbourne in 1998, we considered finding another home church. Yet, we came back to Trinity because of the people in our carecell that connected and nurtured us. Back then, the vision and values of the church had not been arranged into VIPS and PARC. Yet, the carecell was a place that already exhibited all these

things. Through this community of faith, we saw how Trinity remained the place where our family could continue to grow in our relationship with God. Our leaders exercised relentless belief in us and encouraged us to demonstrate a passionate heartbeat by reaching out to our oikos. Indeed, my entire family (including our children Alicia, Audriana, and Barnabas) are faithfully attending Trinity and serving God in our own ways.

P …it is family and a church that cares. My wife and I always tell our children that if anything were to happen to us, there are a few people they are to call – all of them Trinitarians. These are men and women that hold a special

place in our lives. If ever there was a crisis in our family, our children know that we trust these ones to guide them to the right decisions. Though we don’t keep in touch with them all the time, they are a spiritual family who will always be there for us.

Why is it important for Trinitarians to continue belonging, envisioning, and committing to her God-given vision? Y In this journey of faith, we need to keep challenging ourselves to go to the next level. The only way that happens is when we step out of our comfort zone.

the shade”). We give to this house because we believe in what Trinity stands for. We give because we want future generations to benefit from our sacrifice and build upon strong foundations.

When we fill out a Vision Faith Promise Card, we demonstrate a willingness to do our part so that the plans of God can come to pass.

To be strong and mature Christians, our lives must be balanced on three fronts: strong knowledge of God (through His Word), constant personal encounters with God, and a commitment to serve God.

forward and nurturing the next generation of Trinitarians.

P

All of us want to enjoy the fruits of our labor. At the same time, we must balance it with a commitment to building for the future, paying it

Beyond leaving a physical legacy, I believe that every Christian desires to leave a spiritual legacy. As first-generation Christians, my wife and I desire to see our children and grandchildren carry on this tradition of loving God and pursuing His Kingdom agenda.

ENVISION

GOD NEEDS Y U By Senior Pastor Dominic Yeo

IT’S EASY TO SEE THAT WE NEED GOD. BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT GOD NEEDS US? IN THIS DECADE OF EXPANSION, GOD IS OPENING THE DOORS FOR US TO PLANT REGIONAL WORSHIP CENTERS AND ENTER INTO NEW PLACES OF MINISTRY. HE NEEDS US TO ARISE IN FAITH AND PARTNER WITH HIM TO ENTER THESE OPEN DOORS.

5 3

GOD NEEDS YOU AND I TO BUILD HIS HOUSE — TO MAKE TRINITY A PLACE FOR EVERYONE. HE NEEDS US TO ESTABLISH HIS KINGDOM AND TO BRING THE GOOD NEWS TO EVERY NATION, TRIBE, AND TONGUE.

TO FIND OUT, LET’S TURN TO A VERY FAMILIAR PORTION OF SCRIPTURE — THE MIRACLE FEEDING OF THOUSANDS IN MATTHEW 14. “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick. 14

As evening approached, the disciples came to Him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.’ 15

Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’ 16

Matthew 14:15-16 When Jesus arrived at His destination, there were crowds of people waiting for Him at the shore. Compassion filled His heart and upon disembarking, He started ministering to their many needs – physical healing, spiritual restoration, emotional healing, and the forgiveness of sins. The Bible doesn’t tell us how long He spent doing this but it was long enough for the day to become late and the people to be in need of food. At that moment, Jesus also had a need. He needed His disciples to “give them something to eat.” As a member of the Godhead, Jesus had the power to create food for the masses and, yet, He told His disciples to do something about it.

As the creator of heaven and earth, it is incredulous for God to need us. In Psalm 8:3, David writes that it is the fingers of God that set the moon and stars in their place. If you consider that the radius of the sun is 864,000 miles (109 times the size of Earth),1 those are some big fingers! Just as Jesus needed the disciples, God needs you. God needs us. It’s an amazing concept given that He is all powerful, all knowing, and ever-present. He is a God without lack, owning the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10). Yet, the feeding of thousands shows us that He wants to use us as channels for miracles, provision, and blessings.

1. https://www.nasa.gov/sun

When I read verse 16, God dropped three words into my mind: “I need you.”

5 4

ENVISION

GOD NEEDS YOU REGARDLESS

As evening approached, the disciples came to Him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 15

Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Matthew 14:15 I can understand why the disciples wanted Jesus to send them away. Faced with a sea of humanity, feeding the multitudes is a daunting task made even more daunting when you consider that it was just 5,000 men. If you assume that every man brought his wife and two children, that means there were 20,000 mouths to feed! Overwhelmed by the crowd and the responsibility of running this massive feeding program, the disciples were intimidated, their faith was impacted and shrank. While Jesus was fully engaged in ministering to the people, their response demonstrated a lack of spiritual engagement with what was happening in their midst. Asking Jesus to send them away demonstrated how little faith they had at that point in time. Worse still, it revealed the condition of their heart.

5 5

Beyond impacted faith, the disciples were a group of men who were self-serving. When you read through the Gospels, you’ll discover they didn’t serve because of a heart for the people. The disciples served because they aspired for places of power and title. A few chapters later in Matthew

20:20-28, we read that James and John petitioned to Jesus to sit at His right and left, causing tension among the disciples over the issue of position. Despite their weakness, Jesus still wanted to use them. Despite not being spiritually engaged, Jesus wanted to engage them in the miraculous. Despite being selfserving, God wanted to use their hands to serve the multitudes. The same is true for us today. Your faith might be impacted or misaligned. You might have made some mistakes and bad decisions. You might be riding on someone else’s faith. All these things don’t change the fact that God loves you. It does not change the fact that He needs and wants to use you for greater things. When God looks at you and I, He doesn’t focus on our flaws and mistakes. Rather, He sees us as men and women whom He has endowed with a unique personality, a combination of spiritual gifts, and specific spheres of influence. He wants to take all that we are and to realign us so that He can work His miracles through us.

GOD NEEDS YOU TO BE AVAILABLE

“Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’ 16

‘We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,’ they answered.” 17

Matthew 14:16-17 In these two verses, the Bible doesn’t tell us that the disciples engaged in a theological or philosophical discourse about the impossibility of feeding the multitudes. Nor did they refuse to act. Instead, they availed themselves to find out what was available for the task at hand – five loaves and two fish.

Availability has nothing to do with our ability.

Availability has nothing to do with our achievements. In this world, many will boast about their academic qualifications. The truth is that degrees mean nothing if we do not have a temperature. God wants men and women who are on fire for Him and His agenda.

Many discount themselves from serving God because of a perception that serving God requires certain talents and abilities. The truth is that God is more interested in our heart. He is more interested in men and women who choose to avail of their time and talents to serve Him.

5 6

ENVISION

Availability has nothing to do with our experience. Some can boast to do things for God because they have prior experience with various things. The truth is that yesterday’s experience may be irrelevant for today’s assignments. Every experience happens in a specific setting, environment, and set of variables. In this fast-paced and technologically driven world, many of the variables have changed. Things are advancing so fast that prior knowledge, while it may count for something, isn’t everything.

Availability has everything to do with our willingness. Though the disciples didn’t have much to work with, their willingness to be used enabled Jesus to feed thousands. Their words demonstrated a posture of openness where they surrendered their will, including their doubts, to the Lord. Despite our lack of ability, achievements, and experience, the truth is that God can anoint us for every good work. He can supernaturally impart spiritual gifts into our lives. He can unlock abilities that lay dormant in our being. There are testimonies of people whom the Holy Spirit empowered to speak local languages while on an overseas overseas missions trip, myself included. Most importantly, God can impart to us the spirit of love. 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 reminds us to do everything in love or else labor in vain. Serving is a powerful way to reach out to people around us because our actions speak louder than our words. When we choose to avail ourselves for the tasks at hand, lives are impacted because people can feel the sincerity of our motives. Therefore, let’s choose to avail ourselves, willing to be used by God, so that His life can flow from our hands into people’s hearts.

5 7

GOD NEEDS YOU TO RESPOND IN FAITH

“’We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,’ [the disciples] answered. 17

18

‘Bring them here to me,’ [Jesus] said.

And He directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.” 19

Matthew 14:17-19

Faith is the master key that unlocks heaven’s blessings. When we read this passage, we see how the disciples took this master key and responded by giving the bread and fish to Jesus. Their faith wasn’t based on faith. Instead, their faith was faith was based on Jesus. He had asked them to feed the multitudes. They responded by trusting that He would enable them to do so. For you and I, our faith must be built upon the Word of God. That’s why it’s so important for us to build up our Word life in this year of going back to basics. We need to soak ourselves in the Word – to study and meditate upon it – so that when we are called to activate faith, we do so on a firm foundation of God’s truth.

Faith releases God’s grace into our lives. When we exercise faith, we don’t just do it based on God’s Word. We also do it based on God’s character. For the disciples, the extended time they had with Jesus – listening to His teachings and witnessing His ministry – were times where their faith in Him was fortified. When Jesus asked them to feed the multitudes, they knew that He was not setting them up for failure. Sometimes, we fail to exercise faith because of bad experiences in the past. Perhaps we had put our high hopes in people or things only to be disappointed when they fail to deliver or collapse under pressure. God is different. When He deposits a promise into your 5 8

ENVISION heart, He will ensure that it comes to pass. When He reveals a way forward, He will empower you to reach the final destination. Lamentations 3:22-24 is a wonderful reminder of who God is and how much He is committed to us: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies

never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in Him.’” As a result, we can entrust our entire lives to Him because of a deep understanding that God will never shortchange or abandon us – God will be with us.

Faith helps you overcome. When God needs us, He may require us to act in times of great opposition and against all odds.

As evening approached, the disciples came to Him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 15

Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Matthew 14:15

With evening approaching, the disciples recognized that they were about to face an overwhelming situation. There were thousands of hungry bellies and it was imperative that they receive something to eat. Even if the disciples had the money to purchase food for everyone, time was not on their side – it was a remote place and it would soon be dark. By exercising faith

5 9

in Jesus, the disciples overcame the odds because Jesus enabled them to overcome the obstacles of resources and time. Exercising the master key of faith allows God to move in the supernatural. Remote places can become refreshing and replenishing places. He can turn lack into plenty and nothing into something.

They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 20

Matthew 15:20 God can also extend time. When the Israelites exercised faith in Joshua 10:13, we read of how God responded by causing the sun to stay in the middle of the sky for an entire day.

God can also shorten time, making it qualitative instead of quantitative. Things that take weeks, months, or years to accomplish can be done in a fraction of that time if the favor and wisdom of God are with us.

GOD NEEDS YOU TO RESPOND IN OBEDIENCE Simply put, obedience is action. However, it involves more than doing. Obedience is also about doing things completely and with conviction.

It’s easy to tell when someone is doing something out of conviction versus out of compulsion. When something comes to us halfcomplete, full of mistakes, or not thought through, it shows a person who wants to check off a box or get something over and done with. When something comes to us complete, error-free, and thought through, it shows a person who has given their 150 percent because they operate with a strong conviction to achieve a goal.

Some of us may have served in the past or have come into Trinity from other churches. Some things happened that impacted our faith and, as a result, we have gone into hiding. What was supposed to be a short break has become a vacation, so much so that we have vacated our relationship with God, in a season of dryness in the Lord. Friends, it’s time to come back because He needs you. While there’s fear in coming back, I believe that as you step up in obedience, He will begin to fill you with newfound vitality. As you step up to serve the Lord, He will begin to refresh and renew your spirit.

In the same way, God expects us to be on fire for Him and His agenda. That’s why He loves a cheerful

In the feeding of the multitudes, we see a miracle of breakthrough for the people because thousands were fed. What’s more, the disciples had a breakthrough in their faith. EXERCISING THE MASTER KEY OF FAITH ALLOWS GOD TO MOVE IN THE SUPERNATURAL. REMOTE PLACES CAN BECOME REFRESHING AND REPLENISHING PLACES. HE CAN TURN LACK INTO PLENTY AND NOTHING INTO SOMETHING. There is a shift that’s taking place in the spiritual atmosphere of our nation. Many church leaders I’ve spoken to affirm this season of open heavens where we are seeing an outpouring of miracles and many salvations taking place. Last year, we stepped out with center plants in Bukit Batok and Jakarta. This year, Trinity is stepping into something that has never been done before – church planting. With the start of Risen Christian Assembly in August (pg 42), we have begun a journey of releasing members and ministerial staff to be part of new Assemblies of God churches – each one with distinct visions, values, and cultures so that many in Singapore can experience the love and power of God.

The harvest is coming and God needs every one of us to rise and do our part in Kingdom-building. Don’t let impacted faith, past experiences, or bad decisions stop you from being part of God’s agenda. If personal motives for stepping up are self-seeking and self-validating, it’s time to shift perspectives because you and I are called to live for something greater than ourselves.

IMAGINATION By Rev Alan Hewitt

Have you ever thought about how powerful your imagination is? Famous figures throughout history have much to say about the power of imagination. “Reality can be beaten with enough imagination.”

“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”

Mark Twain

Lewis Carroll

“Imagination rules the world.” Napoleon Bonaparte

Through Matthew 14:22-33, I want to illustrate three truths that we can learn about the power of our imagination.

“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowd. 23After He had dismissed them, He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray.

22

Later that night, He was there alone, 24and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. ‘It’s a ghost,’ they said, and cried out in fear. 25 26

But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ 27

28

‘Lord, if it’s You,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to You on the water.’

29

‘Come,’ He said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,” He said, ‘why did you doubt?’ 31

And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, ‘Truly You are the Son of God.’”

Your IMAGINATION can make your

REALITY REDUNDANT

As we enter into the world of Matthew 14:22-33, we find the disciples in a boat in the dead of night. They had spent hours battling strong winds and choppy waters around to get themselves at “a considerable distance from land.” John’s account tells us that “they had rowed about three or four miles” (6:19) before Jesus approached them. Yet, instead of drawing comfort from Jesus’ presence, the Bible tells us that they cried out in fear, believing that they had seen a ghost. Immediately, Jesus reassures them with these words: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” When they were making no progress, Jesus was progressing.

lives. When the storms of life blur our image and view of Him, our inability to see His face means that we must pay attention to His voice. If we cannot see the Word, we must be sure to hear the Word. Reading on, we come to verse 28 where Peter responds with one of the craziest lines in the entire Bible: “Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water.” He didn’t say “Let me help You into the boat.” He didn’t say “Why did You let this storm rise up all around us?” He didn’t say “Get us out of here!” or even “Stop the storm!”

When they were going nowhere, Jesus was going somewhere. He was progressing towards them.

He said, “Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water.”

There will be times where situations and circumstances will try to throw us off course. No matter how strong the winds and waves may be, they can do nothing to slow Jesus down – what we see as storms are actually pathways for Him to move in our

In the Old Testament, the people of God passed through the waters of the Red Sea and the Jordan River. Nobody had ever walked on water. What Peter was asking was something that had never been done before, something that was entirely of his imagination.

IMAGINATION sets us apart from those who are stuck in their REALITY

The other disciples never thought of walking on water as a possibility – they were still stuck in the reality of the storm. While they were imagining protection, Peter imagined the possibilities. That lone voice coming from the water was making Peter’s reality redundant. The storm wasn’t relevant anymore because Jesus was right there on the water. At that

moment, Peter saw an opportunity to move out of the natural into the supernatural. We need to do more than remind ourselves that God is with us. We have to go beyond talking about God’s presence, beyond knowing the theology, and start imagining all the possibilities.

IMAGINATION can CHANGE THE WORLD It was imagination that changed Peter’s life that day and it is imagination that changes our world today. Many things we take for granted are the product of someone’s imagination. TVs used to be big boxes that were perched on a cabinet until one day someone thought to hang it on a wall. From horse-drawn carriages to driverless vehicles, modes of transportation continue to evolve because there are people who dare to dream big. “Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water.” Why did Peter dare to utter these words? Luke 6:45 tells us that “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Along with James and John, Peter was part of the inner circle of disciples who were especially close to Jesus. It was this frequency and proximity that enabled Peter’s heart to take on more and more of his master’s heart – to feel more of what He feels,

to think the way He thinks, and to want more of what He wants.

‘‘

IF WE CANNOT SEE THE WORD, WE MUST BE SURE TO

HEAR

THE WORD.

Albert Einstein once said that “Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions.” That is how powerful our imagination can be. When Peter asked the Lord to call him into the water, he was previewing the coming attraction! His reality of being in a dark, stormy place lost its fear-gripping power over his life as imagination took over. What’s more, the response of Jesus was one word: “Come.” It is imagination which distinguishes churches from churches, leaders from leaders, and people from people. Dreamers need a rhema word from God and Psalm 37:4 tells us that when we take delight in the Lord, He will give us the desires, the imaginations, of our heart.

ENVISION

IMAGINATION can attract the empowerment of HEAVEN In Mark’s account, we read that Jesus was “about to pass by them.” (6:48) Do you know why He didn’t keep going? Peter’s imagination stopped Him (“tell me to come to You on the water”). For Peter, the reality of being in a dark, stormy place lost its power and his imagination took the driving seat! How many times does Jesus pass us by because we are so obsessed with our current reality? How many times does Jesus pass us by because we don’t dare to imagine the divine possibilities? Peter saw himself walking on water before he stepped out of the boat. We, too, must imagine the miracle before we see it come to pass. The woman with the issue of blood

‘‘

imagined her healing before the bleeding stopped (“…she thought, ‘If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.’” – Mark 5:28). She touched Jesus with her mind before she touched Him with her hand! You and I live in a world that needs the church to rise with imaginations that attract the empowerment of heaven. Yes, the world we live in is bad but cursing the darkness will never bring in the light. The world needs us to imagine a church where believers work together to be the salt of our communities and nations. It’s time to imagine a church that is the center of hope – a place where the light of the Gospel grows and burns bright wherever we are placed.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME

PRAYED FROM YOUR IMAGINATION? YOU

6 7

Your IMAGINATION can clothe you in defeat and failure 29

‘Come,’ [Jesus] said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on water and came toward Jesus.30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’

In verse 29, we read that Peter got out of the boat and started walking toward Jesus. Peter achieved exactly what he imagined because Jesus said, “Come.” In other words, Jesus said “yes” to Peter’s imagination. What follows was also a part of Peter’s imagination – a different aspect of it. In verse 30, he saw the wind and became afraid. Why? It’s not as if the wind was new. It had been violently striking and battering the boat this entire time! The wind was not a problem until Peter focused on it and gave it power. While his imagination initially took him beyond his reality, the irony was that it also brought him back to his reality. It wasn’t the wind that sunk him. It wasn‘t the waves that sunk him. Peter sank himself! There’s no mention of fear when Peter got out of the boat but fear came when he focused on what was against him and lost sight of the One who was for him. The moment he fixed his eyes on the wind, the power of his negative imagination took over and he started to see himself sinking. It was his negative imagination that took him under the water.

While our imagination can take us to incredible places in God, our imagination can empower the things that weaken our faith. That is why our enemy seeks to focus our eyes on what’s against us so that we take our eyes off the One who is for us. Do we build the foundation of our imagination on the Word or on the wind? The wind represents anything and everything that seek to bring us down: distractions, criticism, doubt, opposition, challenges, sicknesses. Many things come against us on a daily basis. This is why Paul calls us to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). That includes our imagination.

‘‘

DO WE BUILD THE FOUNDATION OF OUR IMAGINATION ON THE

WORD

OR ON THE

WIND?

There are some imaginations in our lives that are empowering and there are some that need eradicating. It’s interesting to observe that many Christians believe in casting out demons but fail to see the importance of casting out negative imagination. Casting out negative imagination is a much-needed selfdeliverance ministry because if we don’t do it, our negative imagination will cast us down.

6 8

ENVISION How many times do we come together for prayer meetings and get charged up for the things of God only to start rationalizing them away once we leave? How many times have we imagined being a conduit for divine healing but failed to act because we are worried that nothing will happen? How many times have we been challenged to give generously toward a particular cause but stop because we worry that we might need the money later?

You and I will face many winds that seek to take us under. The Bible tells us that we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers in the spirit realm (Ephesians 6:12). Although we have an enemy who seeks to defeat us, the Bible tells us that Christ has already defeated him! That’s why we must be careful not to give him more power than he actually has. Let the One who is for you paint the imaginations of your mind. Never forget that Jesus always walks on top of the things that come against you.

Your IMAGINATION can frame your GREATEST PRAYERS “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us...” – Ephesians 3:20 While God will not say “yes” to everything we ask for, what we see happening with Peter demonstrates the power of Ephesians 3:20. Peter imagined walking on water, asked for it, and God made it possible. That shows us that no prayer we can ever pray can be too big for God to answer. The town where I come from, Newtown in Wales, is a small

6 9

town of about 10,000 people. For many years, it didn’t have a nursing home so those with Alzheimer’s or dementia had to go many, many miles for care. Some even had to cross over to England to seek placement in the right facilities. One day, our church started to imagine ways to solve this problem: What if we could be the ones to provide care for our elderly? Six years later, the doors of Bethshan Nursing Home opened to the public in 2001. This church of 300 worked together to raise £2.5 million to build a 40-bed facility. For the last

17 years, we have been living out Matthew 25:40 by caring for the elderly in our community – whom Jesus called the “least of these.” As a major employer of the town, our dedicated staff ensures that each of our residents has a clean and safe place to live. Many elderly live out their final months and years at Bethshan with dignity and respect. We have even had the privilege of hosting His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, in our church where he listened to our dreams for this nursing home. How does all that happen? Imagination! We saw the needs of our town, had a desire to meet them, and dared to ask largely. “God, can we make this possible?” “God, can we be Your agents?” “God, we know You can make it happen!” Very often, our approach to God is for the small things in life. The truth is that we don’t have to ask God for things that are within our ability. We don’t have to approach God like a child who wants to be polite, fearful of asking for too much. Growing up, my parents drilled into our heads that we could only take one biscuit whenever we were at someone’s house for tea. So, whenever the biscuit plate was passed, my brothers and I would politely take one piece. While our parents were pleased with our manners, my brothers and I would always leave hungry.

I want you to know that God doesn’t want us to be one-biscuit kids. God wants us to be five-biscuit kids, ten biscuit kids, twenty-biscuit kids! Good manners are not required at the great banquet table of God. God says, “Come, it’s all yours! Anything on the table is yours and anything you can imagine, it’s yours!” How often do we insult Him with our small desires, low ambitions, low expectations, and mediocre dreams! God’s Word says that He is able to do immeasurably, exceedingly, abundantly more than we can ask or imagine. He is waiting for us to ask largely so that He has the opportunity to show us what He’s capable of! When was the last time you prayed from your imagination? I’m sure many of us have loved ones who reject the Gospel. Don’t keep imagining that they’ll never come to Christ. Start imagining that they are all in service praising God with you! Your prayer is directed to a God who can save anybody! If you have prodigals in your family and you’ve given up on them returning to God, it’s time to start imagining hearts turn back to the Father and living for His glory! Let your prayers be shaped by your imagination. It’s time to stop asking “what if?” and start declaring that all things are possible because God can do exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ask or imagine!

After Peter cried out to the Lord to save him, the narrative could have ended with, “and Peter drowned.” Instead, it went on to say that, “Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him.” Immediately! Sinking was not the last thing that happened to Peter. Beyond lifting him out of the water, what do you think Jesus did to bring Peter back to the boat? Give him a piggyback ride? Tell him to swim back? I believe that Jesus walked with Peter back to the boat because they both climbed back in. Peter’s faith in Jesus enabled him to successfully walk on water! I want you to know that God is a great catcher. God’s will is always for you to have victory after failure. I want you to know that God permits you to dream your biggest dreams.

You don’t have to be a big person to have big dreams for God. There is a God who is waiting to save you, to restore you, and to help you move forward. If you’ve lost your dreams, it’s time to dream again. If you’ve lost all hope, it’s time to hope again. It’s time to stop focusing on the wind and start fixing our eyes on the One who is for us. It’s time to dare to believe that all things are possible! GOD With Our TREASURES Trusting

A FAMILY’S JOURNEY OF FAITH IN GIVING By Loh Dan Lin

In a season of tremendous financial strain, God challenged Joseph Chelliah’s Family to exercise faith by committing to a Vision Faith Promise. Read about their journey of faith and how they experienced God’s abundant blessings as a family.

Rachel’s journey My family joined Trinity in 2005 – the year after we migrated we immigrated to Singapore from Chennai, India. We made Trinity our home church because of its strong emphasis on the Bible. Everything this church did – its vision, values, and practices – stood on the foundation of God’s Word. Trinity was also a place where our family could grow together. Through DiscoveryLand and IGNYTE, my children Abhishek (age 19) and Aashish (age 12) learned godly values and are growing to become strong, God-honoring young men.

7 3

Since our family benefited so much from Trinity’s ministry, my husband Joseph and I wanted to serve in any way that God had called us to. Starting with Spiritual Parenting

classes, we embarked on a journey of equipping ourselves for service. We started serving as Celebration Hosts. Over time, Joseph also became a member of the Communion preparation core team. We also serve at church events whenever help was needed. In 2009, we were commissioned as Spiritual Parents. Just one year later, we were entrusted with a flock of our own when we rose to become Carecell Leaders. Over the past 13 years, Joseph and I have experienced tremendous spiritual growth. As we dared to step out in faith, God transformed us from shy individuals who didn’t dare to speak in front of people to strategic

leaders wherever God has placed us in. Our family learned to live out Trinity’s vision of Vibrant Atmosphere, Incredible Unity, Passionate Heartbeat, and Strategic Leadership beyond the four walls of the church; they were very much a part of our carecell, family, and school/work life. As Trinitarians, participating in Vision Month is an important tradition to our family. Everyone, including our children, has committed Faith Promises since we joined Trinity more than a decade ago. What’s more, we always fulfilled our Faith Promises because we know that God is the One who has first given us what we have. 2017 was the first time I struggled with my Vision Faith Promise. In May, Joseph lost his job. Since he was the sole breadwinner in our family, we had no income but still had major expenses to pay. What’s more, Abhishek was going to start his tertiary education at the University of Waterloo in September. After helping Abhishek settle in Toronto and paying for his first semester of school fees, we could only leave him with SGD 400 for his living expenses. Our entire savings account had been wiped out and Joseph was still unemployed. On September 24, I attended the Vision Weekend with a burdened heart. When it was time to ask God for an amount to put on my Visions Faith Promise Card, I struggled. Financially, we were depleted. I was worried about how we were going to continue meeting our everyday expenses.

DESPITE ALL MY WORRIES AND DOUBTS, I DECIDED TO EXERCISE FAITH AND OBEY THE HOLY SPIRIT. The Holy Spirit prompted me to write “My son’s first month salary.” I paused. “Do You really want me to write that?” I asked God, “We don’t have any income now – neither Joseph nor Abhishek have a job!” Though Abhishek was enrolled in a program where he would work and study at the same time, he had not even started going for job interviews. Despite all my worries and doubts, I decided to exercise faith and obey the Holy Spirit. When Pastor Dominic read out the “special” Faith Promise cards, he picked up a card and said this: “I like this card. This mother has just committed her son’s first-month salary.” As he prayed over my card, I started to tear uncontrollably. Through Pastor Dominic’s prayer, God assured me that what I had committed would come to pass despite our current financial situation. That night, I called Abhishek to let him know about my Vision Faith Promise. I was concerned about his reaction. Would he be upset? Apprehensive? Doubtful? After all, I had just committed treasures that were not entrusted to me! His response brought tears to my eyes. “Mummy, I also made the same

7 4

UP CLOSE pledge to God, to give my firstmonth salary to build His Kingdom. I want others to be able to enjoy the presence of God in Trinity just as I have benefited from it.” Though a cash-strapped university student, he understood the importance of stewardship and of giving his first fruits to God. We can never out give God! In December, God opened doors for both Joseph and Abhishek to find employment. On January 2, 2018 both father and son started on their new jobs. Loving, serving, and giving to God is something we can do as a family.

Parents, do not shy away from sharing about the challenges of life with your children. When Joseph and I lived out our faith during this extremely tough season, our children saw what it meant to trust God in all seasons and circumstances. When God provided jobs for Joseph and Abhishek, our family saw how God faithfully provided for all our needs. I encourage every family to live out Joshua 24:15: “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Allow God to expand your faith and use your family as a testimony of His goodness and faithfulness.

Joseph’s journey Our financial challenges started in March 2015 when I was dismissed from a venture I helped to build into a multi-million dollar business. While I was able to take on a few ad-hoc consulting assignments between April 2015 and July 2016, being without a full-time job was a big blow to our family finances. After many interviews, I managed to find a full-time job in August 2016 but was dismissed after 10 months. I’ve been through many career ups and downs but 2017 was hard because we had many large expenses such as Abhishek’s university fees. In these

7 5

challenging times, I honestly found it difficult to pray. There were times when negative thoughts would come into my mind, filling me with anxiety and fear. What kept me going was my belief in a faithful God. When Pastor Dominic released Isaiah 54:2 during Watchnight Service, the verse resonated with me: “Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.” I sensed that God was using this season to bring me to another level of faith and breakthrough.

I SENSED THAT GOD WAS USINGTHIS SEASON TO BRING ME TO ANOTHER LEVEL OF FAITH AND BREAKTHROUGH.

Holding this verse close to my heart, I proclaimed that God’s promises will come to pass for our family. I even put up a painting with the verse in our living room as a visual reminder. I knew that God would strengthen me through this trial as I choose to trust in Him. Though our circumstances looked bleak, our family chose to fix our eyes on God. For a season, we went to East Coast Park every Saturday to fast, meditate, and pray. As we pressed into His presence, God gave us peace and encouragement to weather this storm. Despite our difficulties, our family continued to serve God. In my previous workplace, my colleagues knew that Friday evenings were set aside for carecell. At 5:45, they could see me packing up even when the work was coming in. “You think your God will provide for you?” my boss would ask, taunting and challenging my faith. Yet, fulfilling my role as a Carecell Leader was non-negotiable. I know that God would not shortchange His people when we choose to honor Him with our time. In the midst of our trials, Rachel and I continued to serve as Carecell Leaders on Fridays, worship God on the weekends, and serve in our Ministry Expressions when assigned. When Vision Weekend came around in 2017, our family still wanted to be part of the Faith Promise tradition. Over the years, we learned that a Faith Promise was not dependent on our current circumstances or how well we can plan our finances. Rather, a Faith Promise is about trusting that God would provide. We desired to give even when we had nothing. We desired to be part

of what God was doing in and through the church. When Rachel shared about committing Abhishek’s first month salary and Abhishek affirmed his desire to do the same, we knew it was a confirmation from God that He will provide. God started to move soon after that fateful day. He led me to study robotics and machine learning, an area that is completely new for me. He opened doors for interviews in that industry. In December, I was offered a robotics-consulting job in a reputable company. At the start of the year, I had zero knowledge of technology and robotics. At the end of the year, I was offered a job in the robotics field! What’s more, the salary goes beyond covering our expenses and allows us to start replenishing our savings. If you are experiencing challenges in your life right now, I leave you with a verse that brought me great comfort during this trying season:

urageous. “Be strong and co do not be Do not be afraid; the Lord your discouraged, for you wherever God will be with you go.” – Joshua 1:9

When there’s nothing left to hold on to, hold on to God and His promises. Keep the faith. Believe that when you honor Him with all you have – your time, talents, and treasures – He will surely honor and keep you. 7 6

Abhishek’s journey I have been a Trinitarian since I was five years old, growing through DiscoveryLand, Pre-Teens, and IGNYTE. Being in Trinity has helped our family grow stronger in our walk with God and grow closer to one another. My parents modeled for my brother and I what it meant to place God first in everything. That instilled in me a desire to model their faith. Just as they served as leaders in the carecell, I also served as a Spiritual Parent in IGNYTE. When they committed and fulfilled their Faith Promises, I also committed and fulfilled my Missions and Vision Faith Promises – a tradition I started in my DiscoveryLand days. In my heart, I made a promise to honor God with my treasures by giving the first month’s salary of my first job to Him.

Through the financial difficulties our family went through in 2017, I saw how my parents kept the faith. On Saturdays, our family devote half a day to fasting and praying at East Coast Park, seeking God and waiting upon Him. I also saw how my parents continued to praise and serve God faithfully amidst our financial hardship. When I started my degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo in September, I knew that it was a tremendous sacrifice for my parents. With only SGD 400 to cover my living expenses until I received my first paycheck, I had to save and live as frugally as possible. I knew the financial challenges we faced at home so I didn’t ask them for more money. When my mother called me to share about her Vision Faith Promise, I was amazed because I had not told anyone about my first-month salary pledge. At that moment, I took it as God’s affirmation that He would take care of us and provide for our needs. In December, God provided me with an amazing job offer as an analyst in the Toronto Transit Commission. The pay was beyond my expectations and qualifications. Given how popular this position was, I knew that it was God who provided this job for me. Besides covering all of my living expenses, I was able to save money because the

7 7

GOD’S PLANS ARE ALWAYS BETTER THAN OUR PLANS AND HE WILL NEVER SHORTCHANGE YOU! job entitled me to free rides on public transportation across the city. When my first paycheck came in, I started to have second thoughts about fulfilling my promise. With no savings then, I really needed the funds for my daily expenses. “Could I wait until my second paycheck to fulfill my Vision Faith Promise?” “Should I give my gross salary or net?” Though these questions swirled in my head, I quickly banished these thoughts because I knew that everything that I have belongs to God – I am merely a steward of His money. After having a heart-to-heart talk with my father, he supported my decision and reminded me of Pastor Beatrice’s sermon on giving and tithing. Affirmed that God wanted me to give Him my first fruits, I transferred my first month’s gross salary back to Singapore. Indeed, God is our Provider. Even though I only had the SGD 400 my parents left me when I first arrived in Toronto, God provided for all my needs as I waited for my second paycheck. He would send friends over with food, groceries, and other items I needed for my dormitory.

After completing my time at the Toronto Transit Commission (from January to April), I started applying for positions for my second work semester (from September to November). By His grace and favor, I received four offers from wellrespected companies – something that is unheard of for first-year students like me. I am so grateful that the salary continues to cover for all of my living expenses so that I do not have to ask my parents for any more money. Praise the Lord for His amazing provision! To my peers, know that we are merely stewards of God’s blessings. Even if you are going through tough times, trust in God, focus your eyes on Him, and honor Him with all that you have. God’s plans are always better than our plans and He will never shortchange you!

Testimonies of Transformation at our Language Ministry’s Water Baptisms In some cultures, the decision to go through water baptism is not taken lightly. A declaration of commitment to Christ, it can mean severing ties with families and communities. Yet, members of four language ministries developed the strength and conviction to go through the waters in the second quarter of this year. Be inspired by these stories of life transformation. Read how the language ministries connected, nurtured, and discipled our baptism candidates. Be encouraged to invite your oikos to join these vibrant and caring communities of faith.

On the afternoon of May 27, 250 people (including 10 firsttime visitors) attended the water baptism of 11 members of the Filipino Ministry. During the service, Pastor Michelle Dolendo and Sister Christine Villaroman shared about the forgiving and transforming love of God. We praise God that five people gave their lives to Jesus at this event!

“Before Jesus, my life was a mess. I was in and out of relationships and made many bad decisions. That started to change when I came to Trinity. I started with the Life Skills Courses in 2014. Over time, I started attending carecell and was nurtured by my Spiritual Parents. Through the Filipino Ministry, I started to feel God’s true and unconditional love for me. He has changed my life. I now move forward toward His destiny for me. I want to continue following and serving Jesus!” Jeneffer Ganancial

282 people (including 15 first-time visitors) heard 15 incredible testimonies at the Chinese Ministry’s water baptism ceremony on June 3. One first-time visitor shared how she was touched by the authenticity and transforming power of a relationship with God.

“When I was eight, I followed my grandmother to church and got to know the Lord. As I grew up, I resorted to using my own wisdom and left God. When life took a turn for the worse, I am thankful that He never left me. Last year, I was invited by my neighbor to Trinity and it was here that I re-dedicated my life to the Lord. Even though my problems have not gone away, I now have peace and joy in my heart to face the challenges in my life. I have just completed both Spiritual Parenting classes because I want to be used by God to be a blessing to others, just as my neighbor was a blessing to me.” Kelly Chan

“Last year, my children brought me to attend the Li Nanxing evangelistic event. I was touched and opened my heart to the Lord. Following that, I attended the 8:30am service where a Trinitarian asked if I had any prayer requests. I requested for a prayer for my back because I had forgotten to take my painkillers. Later, at 10am, I realized that my back did not hurt anymore. I thank God for healing me of this pain that had been tormenting me for 46 years. All glory to Him!” Cynthia Yew

11 members of the Indonesian Ministry testified of the Lord’s work in their lives before being baptized on April 1 and May 6. There were 14 firsttime visitors, including employers and other oikos invited by the baptism candidates. We are grateful for the opportunity to lead nine people to make decisions for Jesus through this two-part celebration.

“Before I became a Christian, my life was full of bitterness. Because of my sins, I felt worthless. That all started to change when a friend Cristin invited me to attend the Indonesian Ministry. That’s when God began to touch and change my life. In one sermon, Pastor Steven Tay took out a $50 note, crushed it in his hand, threw it on the ground, and stepped on it. Through that, God revealed that the unchanged value of the note was the same as my life. I remain precious in the eyes of God no matter what has happened in my past. After I received Jesus into my heart, I was set free from my bitterness and condemnation. I was able to release forgiveness to those who hurt me. Today, I know that I am loved by God and am precious to Him. I have a passion for knowing God and for building a deeper relationship with Him. I am ready to be used as a tool for His glory!” Veronika Linda Malo

On Pentecost Sunday (May 20), Pastor Kim Chong Pae led four members of the Thai Ministry to follow Christ by going into the waters of baptism. Though the day was dark and cloudy, God held the rain back so that all 49 attendees (including three firsttime visitors) could hear the testimonies of the baptism candidates.

“When I first came to Trinity, I was warmly welcomed by the people and felt their love. I accepted Jesus and started growing through the New Beginnings book. Because of Jesus, I have new life and joy in my heart. I regularly pray and spend time with Him. I have also stopped working on Sunday so that I can come to church and worship Him. Khampew Thontang

Though the rain came during the lunch fellowship, the event ended with a bright and clear sky, a perfect reminder of the new life and hope we all have in Jesus.

APAGF 2018

Building foundations for Kingdom-building By Jessie Chew

The Asia Pacific Assemblies of God Fellowship (APAGF) serves as a platform for the region’s General Superintendents to consider strategic engagements and initiatives between nations. Amid local and national responsibilities, members endeavor to come

together annually for a time of update and collaboration. Hosted by Rev Wayne Alcorn and the Australian Christian Churches, 20 General Superintendents came together from July 24-26 for this year’s APAGF meetings in Brisbane.

“Friendships are the bedrock for Kingdom ministry.” – Rev Wayne Alcorn during the first morning devotion

As Chairman of the APAGF, Pastor Dominic Yeo facilitated the discussions and challenged every member to continue motivating local congregations to be missions-minded beyond their own people and outside of their own lands.

With the establishment of the World Assemblies of God’s Next Generation (NextGen) Commission in 2017, Pastor Dominic Yeo reiterated this global emphasis by calling for regional NextGen representatives to hold concurrent discussions during APAGF 2018 – establishing a point of contact for the region’s children, youth, and young adult ministries. Facilitated by Rev Gerald Tan (Member of World Assemblies of God NextGen Executive Committee), 16 representatives met to consider how each nation could increase its emphasis and effectiveness in reaching, assimilating, discipling, and empowering the next generation.

As we continue to release our Senior Pastor to serve the nations, we thank God that his ministry is doing much to build and strengthen the global Church – enabling ministers and ministries to effect national change and fulfill the Great Commission in their spheres of influence.

Training AND Consultation

BUILDING UP GODLY LEADERS IN THE AMERICAS

A local church with global impact, Trinity is committed to empowering and equipping churches and ministries through training and consultation trips. With up to 24 hours of travel time and two connecting flights, our pastors traveled to the Americas (Columbia and the USA) in this past quarter to help three churches grow in raising leaders. Read on to find out how our recent training and consultation trips have blessed them.

My relationship with Trinity started in 2008 when Apostle Naomi Dowdy came to Barranquilla for a time of training. In 2012, I had the privilege of coming to Singapore to serve as a pastoral staff in Trinity. After five years of first-hand experience with the TCC Cell Church Model I returned in 2017 to begin it in our church. We are also partnering with Trinity to help other churches in Columbia and the US implement the TCC Cell Church Model. In April 2018, pastors from Trinity came to conduct Section Leaders’ Training and provide consultation on different aspects of the TCC Cell Church Model. The teaching was helpful in changing mindsets about leadership

9 1

development, discipleship, and teamwork. As an immediate application of what we learned, we commissioned 10 new Section Leaders and started eight leadership cells. Trinity, thank you for answering the call to come all the way across the world to support our pastors and our church. Thank you for each word of wisdom, and for all that you have sown into our community and nation. God bless you! Frank Smit Caballero Associate Pastor International Bible Centre Barranquilla, Colombia

Our relationship with Trinity started in 2015 after attending the Cell Church Conference. The seminars about carecells really impacted me because we had small groups but felt that the current model didn’t provide a means of discipleship. Given that the TCC Cell Church Model was intentional about raising leaders, I felt it was God’s way of telling us that this was how we could grow the church and nurture the congregation. Our relationship with Trinity started in 2013 after my brother, Pastor Frank Smit, moved to Singapore. Since we implemented the TCC Cell Church Model, we have seen spiritual growth in the leaders and ministers. The unity between members, Spiritual Parents, and leaders has also increased. We have learned how to be more effective in connecting with newcomers, nurturing them, and helping them become disciples in Christ. In May 2018, pastors from Trinity came to conduct two courses – Nurturing to Transform Lives (Spiritual Parenting 1) and Section Leaders’ Training. There was a need among our leaders to improve their nurturing and discipleship skills. We also wanted our next generation of Section Leaders to be equipped for a new level of leadership.

When Pastor Dominic and the leadership team had a session with our leaders in 2017, his insight had such an impact in our lives and ministry. Through the teaching of the various Trinity pastors, we began to focus on developing leaders and using the Book of Life for evangelism. We have also been blessed by this year’s training and consultation to train our leaders on how we could better nurture and disciple those under our care. Trinity, thank you for sowing into our church. It has been impactful and will reap huge rewards for God’s Kingdom. Anggelo Ramirez Associate Pastor Grace Church Español Houston, Texas, USA

We want to thank Pastor Dominic and the leadership team for investing time and knowledge into our church. Our lives have been impacted by the love we have received from you. Thank you for believing in us and teaching us so that transformation can take place. You are an answer and confirmation that we are doing God’s will. EXPANDING ONLINE

REMAINING CULTURALLY RELEVANT IN AN INCREASINGLY DIGITAL WORLD By Rev Lam Ee Lin, TCA College Expansion has taken different forms at TCA College. Besides an increase in new student admissions, class registrations, and course offerings, the College has also expanded in the ways our students can learn. While many wish to deepen their theological roots, time and distance hinder potential students from enrolling in TCA College’s onsite courses. For that reason, the College decided to bring the classroom to them by offering more courses online. This allows students to study at their own time, own space, and own pace. The journey towards digital learning started in 2016 with the offering of one online course through a learning management system. By the

end of 2018, the College would have offered at least 40 online courses across the different schools. Uncompromising in academic standards and rigor, online courses allow students to be more self-directed in their learning, planning their schedule to fulfill assignment requirements. Students are not limited to a set time or space to attend classes – their classroom is anywhere they have access to the internet. As TCA College continues to grow in this Decade of Expansion, we desire to see more believers engage with the Word of God through our various learning platforms – passionate for God and His Great Commission.

Offered by the School of Leadership, the Master of Arts in Christian Leadership (MACL) is a graduate program focused on helping established leaders and ministers develop and sharpen biblically-grounded organizational leadership skills.

PULSE

By King Rachel

That was the statement Senior Pastor Dominic Yeo said as he closed the conference with the last plenary session. That was indeed what happened in the past three days at Trinity@Paya Lebar.

From June 7-9, 2,261 Trinitarians came to seek the Lord and be refreshed at Life Conference 2018. What they took away was a deep impartation from the Holy Spirit. “From the day of Pentecost until the second coming of Christ, we are in the kairos of the Holy Spirit.” This is the hour of anointing, the hour of vision, and the hour of miracle. As Apostle Edwin Alvarez declared throughout our time together, this was God’s kairos moment for Trinity. In this atmosphere of faith, God started a powerful work in many Trinitarians. Lives were touched. Lost dreams were restored. Broken hearts and spirits were mended.

9 7

The sick were healed. Locked doors were opened. God’s kairos moment was evident as individuals, families, and carecells received their breakthroughs and miracles. Through the workshops, many Trinitarians were empowered and equipped to strengthen the stakes of their Word, prayer, and Spirit life. What I loved about this year’s workshops was how practical they were. When we tried out the various methods during the workshop, I was surprised at how quickly God brought revelation to all of us. “For every season and occasion and purpose, the method of God was a man. I’m here to tell you that you are God’s man. You are

God’s woman for this season to proclaim the Gospel to the world.” The impartation of faith continued during the Night Rallies when Apostle Edwin Alvarez exhorted every believer to rise up in the work and mission of Jesus. Many started to step into their God-given destiny, including two individuals installed as pastors (Pastors Allen Loh and Eveleen Ng) and four who received ministerial credentials to serve as ministers of our first church plant – Risen Christian Assembly (Andrew Lee, Jenny Lee, Peter Leong, and Vanessa Yeo).

PULSE

One of the key breakthroughs I received came in Pastor Gerald’s message, Laying Hold of the Abundant Life, illustrated through the story of Jericho in Joshua 6. For six days, the Israelites marched around the city in silence. They might have been disheartened or confused by what God was asking them to do. Yet, at the appointed time, their shouts caused the walls to come crashing down. As I reflected on my walk with Jesus, I admit to being disheartened at times and wanting to give up. Through that message, God checked my heart and broke something within me. At the altar, I allowed God’s refreshing healing waters to flow into my life. In that time, I received a prophetic word of a new spirit that would be imparted within me.

9 9

But the impartation was not just for me. Two days later, my family talked about their God-encounters during the Life Conference. As we shared, I was tremendously blessed by how God moved in each of their lives. It was a kairos moment for every member of my family – breakthroughs over strongholds, answered prayers, and spiritual freedom. God’s rhema word broke through in our lives as individuals and as a family. When every track came together for the last plenary session, it was a beautiful sight and sound of Trinitarians worshipping God with one heart and voice. In seeing the gathering of the young and old, Apostle Edwin Alvarez left us with a prophetic word: that Trinity would be the place where God’s blessings will flow into the nations.

My husband and I were in a car accident on May 30. While my husband was not injured, I suffered whiplash and had to be hospitalized for three days. During Life Conference, the pain got worse and I contacted the hospital to arrange for physiotherapy sessions. Yet, I wanted to trust God for divine healing so I pressed in for a miracle. During one of the morning sessions, I responded to the altar call and asked God for a miracle. Instantly, He touched me and I left the altar without any pain.

Cruse Queck East District

Life Conference was amazing and refreshing. I expected to be spiritually refreshed but I did not expect that I would be physically refreshed as well. It was a good time of focusing on Jesus again and having that posture of waiting upon Him, trusting that His timing is always perfect. The workshop Overcome or Overload was very practical. I am still using the breathing technique taught to calm down and relax. Since the course advised us to exercise in the morning (rather than at night), I’m also trying to exercise at least once a week in the morning so that I can get a better night’s rest!

Celeste Tan IGNYTE adult leader

In 2017, my company went through a major restructuring exercise where nearly twothirds of the office was made redundant, including me. I thought that God would immediately provide me a new job but that wasn’t the case. By mid-2018, I was still without a job despite going through many rounds of interviews. Things started to turn around during Life Conference. At the first worship session, tears flowed as I felt God’s presence and care for me. When Pastor Dominic shared from Isaiah 40:31, I held on to that Word with all my heart. The very next day, I received a call for another interview. To cut a long story short, I was presented with two job offers in that week. What’s more, I was offered a salary increase of nearly 40 percent! After six long months in the desert, I finally understood what God was doing in my life – He was helping me to let go of my pride, work on wrong attitudes, learn to wait on Him, and trust His timing. Looking back, what sustained me was the care I received from my carecell, the encouragement of my leaders, and the many weekend sermons. I kept, remembered, and applied all of God’s truths in my heart even when my circumstances didn’t make sense. I am actually very glad that I was not given a quick-fix solution. I’m grateful that I had no lack during my period of unemployment. As I grew closer to God, I was also able to spend more time with my young son. I greatly appreciate the pulpit ministry of this church and the spiritual family that has walked with me in this season. This is a great church and God is in our midst!

PULSE

Following my company restructuring and integration exercise, I was retrenched in January 2018 after 19 years of service. I did not have any anxiety about it because I knew that my season with them had come to an end. I had faith in my heart that my latter years will be even better than my former. I spent the next few months practicing selfcare, strengthening relationships, and building my spiritual disciplines. At the end of the fifth month, I felt rested enough and aligned to God’s plan for the next season of life. As I started looking for a new job, God gave me a verse to hold on to, Isaiah 41:13: “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear, I will help you.” During Life Conference, I was greatly ministered by Pastor Dominic and Pastor Gerald’s messages of waiting upon the Lord. During the altar call, a brother spoke prophetic words into my spirit – that God was doing something for me even though I could not see it nor comprehend it. One week later, I received an email from a recruitment consultant and met her to discuss my options. Though one of her job opportunities was already in advanced stages of selection, she decided to submit my resume for consideration. Through God’s divine orchestration, the management showed interest in me and I was eventually offered me the position. I am thankful and excited that I can be in a place where I can impact people for His glory. I am also grateful that this journey of faith was something that my family could be a part of. We prayed together and I was open in sharing my concerns with my children – my fears and uncertainties. Life Conference was a good time to re-charge. When Pastor Dominic shared from Isaiah 40:31, the message hit home because it was about waiting upon the Lord and renewing our strength from Him. God was teaching me what it meant to wait and listen to Him, to be still and abandon self.

Before Life Conference, I suffered from lower back pain for three weeks. At the Night Rally, there was such a strong impartation of faith and the supernatural. When Pastor Dominic reminded us to believe and proclaim the greatness of God, I stepped out in faith to stand during the time of ministry.

The workshop Heart-Work Through Prayer gave me greater insight on prayer. The practical segment, where we practiced speaking in tongues and praying with the Word of God, taught me how to strengthen my prayer language. This broadened my perspective on prayer and gave me ways to stop my mental drift.

When I got home to take a bath, I realized that my back was no longer hurting. The pain was gone and I could bend without pain!

Charissa Joy Ng IGNYTE adult leader

In January, I boldly asked God for a double portion of anointing just as Elisha asked Elijah in 2 Kings 2:9. I doubted that God would give me an answer until Pastor Dominic’s sharing on Saturday morning. He even shared from that same passage! God revealed that the key to receiving the anointing is to seek the anointing. Through Apostle Edwin Alvarez’s sharing on prayer and fasting, I know that God is leading me to a season of seeking Him through these two actions.

I’m thankful to my employer for allowing me to attend the Friday Night Rally so that I could pray for healing. Since coming back from the Philippines over three weeks ago, I suffered from cough, back pain, and discomfort in my throat. I felt breathless and tired every day. When the congregation was asked to lift up our hands for healing, I earnestly prayed for God to heal me. After a pastor prayed for me, I was instantly healed!

Faith!

Stronger and stronger!! The voices of the 311 children and 70 adult volunteers echoed in the Summit of Trinity@Paya Lebar as Pastor Kah Fei taught them about faith. Faith is like a muscle that can be exercised through prayer and knowing the Bible. After a satisfying breakfast, the children feasted on the Word of God on the second morning as Sister Lorraine Chee spoke on formation. Preaching from Matthew 7:24-27 about the house on the rock, children learned about the importance of building a firm foundation through the Word of God and prayer in their daily lives.

1 0 3

During the worship time, God spoke to Joshua Lu (age 9) that he should “build his faith stronger and stronger in God’s Word.” It was a heartwarming sight to see the children commit to grow by reading the word of God and praying regularly.

One adult volunteer, Grace Cheong, was also touched and blessed by the children when she lost her voice on the second day of Life Conference. “God worked wonders, not that I was healed, but the kids were unexpectedly extremely cooperative. I am very blessed by how they even prayed for me when I didn’t ask and they even took care of me.” The children also enjoyed outdoor games at East Coast Park Parkland Green and Kovan Sports Centre planned by the passionate and dedicated AlphaTrackers from Batch 50. Giggles and cheers were heard as the children raced to find ice cream sticks, fill a leaking bottle of water while memorizing Bible verses, navigate across a grid map, and work in teams to build a tower of cups that could withstand the winds of a corrugated board literally named “bad times.” Through these engaging games, the children

learned that their Word and Prayer life gives them courage to believe, and helps them grow continuously in both good and bad times! On the final day, the children joined the adults at the main track and led their parents and the adults in a time of worship, declaring that indeed the Lord is over all! It was a beautiful sight to behold as generations worshipped God together in the Sanctuary. Throughout the three days of Children’s Track, the children had immense fun learning about how to build their lives on the Word of God and prayer. We thank God for the seed of truth planted in them – that having a strong Word and Prayer life gives us courage to believe and helps us to keep growing in good and bad times. May this truth guide our children to grow strong in the Lord as they grow up!

I learned that reading the Bible is important and that we must pray often. God can always help us during bad times and also in happy times. Prayer works even when we cannot see God. We must be like the wise man and follow God’s Word. We must also praise God!

Rachel Chia, age 9

It is with much awe that I can say the children were surprisingly warm and welcoming. And nothing feels more precious than a child thanking you for being there to witness their milestones.

Esther Boey, volunteer

I loved all the games, the food, and learning.

It amazes me how the children are so young yet so eager to learn more about God and participate in the games. What was the best about serving was seeing how they grew more in God over the conference.

Youth Track 232 of our youth invested three days of their June holidays to be refreshed and empowered at Life Conference. Besides attending a main workshop of their choice, IGNYTErs attended a special workshop (Defending the Faith) where they were equipped, empowered, and emboldened to stand up for God’s Word.

Through Life Conference, I learned many practical ways to overcome the situations of life. I was also challenged to grow in my walk with God by learning to be sensitive to the Spirit. Now I have an expectation of what He desires to do through me in this kairos season! My piano exam was coming soon and I wasn’t fully prepared for it. As the date came closer, I felt a sense of nervousness and anxiety. I cried out to God on the third day of Life Conference and prayed for my faith to increase. That was when the Lord poured His love upon me, assuring me that He loved me regardless of my results.

Tessa Tan, age 15

During Life Conference, God reminded me that I should not be lukewarm in my faith. Despite the challenges I’m going through now, He wants me to be on fire for Him and to continue serving.

During Life Conference, I chose to go for the workshop Overload or Overcome. I felt that a lot of things have been piling up on me and I wanted to know how to deal with it. At the workshop, I realized how I was overcommitting myself to a lot of things because I wanted to measure up to the people around me. God taught me that I need not be jealous of others because He made everyone for a specific purpose. I was assured of my place and mission in this world. I am perfect just the way I am because I’m fearfully and wonderfully made!

With plenary sessions led by Rev Desmond Tian and workshops conducted by the Chinese Ministry’s pastors, 162 Chinese-speaking attendees of Life Conference were refreshed and empowered for expansion.

Rev Tian’s message during the plenary session had greatly inspired me. I realized that God wants to bless His people with the multiplication anointing and desires that we live out multiplication in our daily life.

On the first day of Life Conference, my life seemed so dim, like a crushed reed. Suddenly, I saw a vision of a beautiful dawn and a big eagle flying in the sky. I thought it was my imagination or a PowerPoint slide.

This is my first time attending the Chinese Track. What stood out in Rev Tian’s sharing was his teaching on multiplication. He used practical examples to explain how multiplication happens.

Since then, I have learned to look at things and problems from God’s perspective. With that, God has been giving me strategies and solutions especially when it comes to ministry. I am now more confident in leading my section, multiplying leaders, and multiplying myself!

Then, Pastor Dominic went up to the stage to share a message on renewal from Isaiah 40:29-31. His message confirmed that what I had seen was really from the Lord. At that moment, my spirit was stirred. I was renewed and connected with God’s will once again.

Rev Tian challenged everyone to believe in the potential of multiplication, despite what we perceive as limited resources. The keys are thankfulness and remembering God’s goodness. His sharing made me reconsider my views on the matter. I began to reexamine my past to see how God has miraculously provided for me and placed different ones around me to experience and witness multiplication.

Joey Kong Ivy Lee

Through Life Conference, God rekindled my hopes. I saw a vision of the power of multiplication and there are new breakthroughs in my spirituality and ministry. Thanks be to God and all glory to Him.

During Life Conference, I was ministered by Rev Tian who reminded me to focus on edifying God in all that I do. We serve God not to please man but to please Him (Matthew 6:1). Indeed, the essence of my Christian walk is to bless others and to let God have my heart. Then, everything will fall into the right perspective.

I am extremely blessed to be part of this Life Conference. The Chinese Track was a deep study on God’s interaction and relationship with His people. I hope to be able to apply these teachings in my daily life and I look forward to next year’s Life Conference.

CAMP OVERFLOW CAMPUS CAMP 2018 By Audrey Tan From July 16-19, 114 campers gathered to embark on a journey to Johor Bahru for Camp Overflow. For over half the campers, this would be their first Campus Camp! Centered on the theme of align, accept, and abound, campers discovered how they could come together to impact their universities for God’s glory. Kick-starting the camp was a powerful time of extended prayer where we aligned our

‘‘

heart to God, preparing ourselves to receive from Him over the next four days. Many of us experienced a breakthrough in our prayer life, praying in tongues much longer than what we were used to. At the first night service, Pastor Wendy Chang shared a message about aligning ourselves to Christ through total obedience. Just as Jesus submitted to the will of God, a call was given for every camper to submit their personal agendas to Him.

God’s presence was so real that night. As I sought Him, He spoke clearly, convicting me of His purpose for my life. I am assured that He who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Brendan Loke (NTU, Year 3)

The highlight of the second day was a workshop titled The Inspiration, Inerrancy and Authority of Scripture. Conducted by Dr Richard Goetz from TCA College, campers were equipped with knowledge regarding the complete authority of the Bible. 1 1 1

On the second day, Sister Phebe Ngan took us through the book of Philippians to help us understand about our citizenship in heaven and submission to God. To enjoy all the privileges of our citizenship, God requires us to submit ourselves ourselves to His Lordship, commit to His commission, and depend on His provision.

‘‘

A common mindset in my generation is the concept of moral relativism. Yet, the Bible tells us that moral codes are not relative but absolute! Through Dr Goetz’s workshop, I am more confident to stand up for God’s truth because I am certain of the authority of the Bible over my life. Hannah Tan (NUS, Year 3)

‘‘

I learned how to claim and believe the authority of the Bible by logic and by faith. Through Dr Goetz, I found a new sense of liberation in the Word – to look beyond minor discrepancies and focus on the sovereignty of the Lord, the author and perfecter of our faith! Chloe Tan (SIM-RMIT, Year 3)

On the third day, Brother Chong Lin Poon shared a message on running the race by abounding in God’s enduring power. As he shared his journey into full-time ministry, many were encouraged to persevere in God’s call to serve. Drawing from the book of Esther, Pastor Wendy’s message, Abounding in God’s Power To Do His Works, was a reminder that each of us is where we are because of God’s divine setup and favor. All these things were not to benefit ourselves but to allow God’s plans to be fulfilled in and through our lives. Many chose to submit to God’s sovereign plans for their lives, believing that the abounding presence and power of God will overflow in their lives. God’s will requires all of us to work together with one heart and mind. After Sister Phebe shared a message about unity, campers stepped out of their seats to forgive fellow Christians who have hurt them in the past. God’s presence overflowed as we worshipped with one voice,

‘‘

Through Camp Overflow, God reaffirmed that my place is to be in this community of believers — to grow, to be nurtured, and to serve. Kristal Ng (NTU, Year 2)

declaring our commitment to be one united Body of Christ, in love and in purpose. Of course, no camp is complete without fun and games! The three days brought us through a series of games with increasing levels of energy and difficulty, bonding us as a ministry as we worked across groups. The end of Camp Overflow is only the beginning. We cannot wait to see what God has in store for our generation as we align, accept, and abound in His power together as a ministry!

I caught a fresh vision of what God wants to do for Campus Ministry and am excited to be His hands and feet in school! Benecia Voon (NTU, Year 1) 1 1 2

TOUGH QUESTIONS

IS TITHING STILL REQUIRED POST-OLD TESTAMENT? By Rev Dr Edwin Perona

How much does God care about our resources? The Bible has much to say about the stewardship of resources. Since the beginning of time, God’s people have been given a mandate as comanagers and developers of His creation (Genesis 1:26-28). Attached to this mandate is a command to honor God with our wealth (Proverbs 3:9; 2 Corinthians 8:1-9; 1 Timothy 6:18). The Bible also gives us numerous warnings about greed and worship of wealth (Joshua 7:20-21; Matthew 6:24; Acts 5:1-11; 1 Timothy 6:10). How does this tie in with the concept of tithing? Is tithing still required for Christians today? To determine whether the Old Testament practice of tithing still applies in our modern context, we start with a look at Old and New Testament narratives.

1 1 3

TOUGH QUESTIONS ANSWERED

TITHING IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

From Genesis to Malachi, the Old Testament is filled with several accounts of tithing. After God delivered Abraham in battle, Abraham gave a tenth of his battle spoils to Melchizedek (Genesis 14:20; Hebrews 7:4). After waking from a divine dream, Jacob promised to give a tenth of all God would provide him (Genesis 28:22). When the Mosaic Law (the “Law”) was given to the Israelites, they were commanded to tithe their physical assets (Leviticus 27:30-33; Numbers 18:20-28; Deuteronomy 14:22-29). The amount they would regularly set aside for God ranged from 10 to 20 percent. This lifestyle of tithing is also observed outside of the Pentateuch (e.g., 2 Chronicles 31:5-6, 12; Nehemiah 10:38-39, 13:5, 12; Amos 4:4; Malachi 3:8). Even in times when the Mosaic covenant was disregarded, prophets like Malachi emphasized the need for the Israelites to continue the practice of tithing (Malachi 3). Why does God require His people to tithe? If God owns everything (Psalm 50:10), why would He need the wealth of His people?

By looking at various portions of Old Testament text, we find five reasons for tithing’s existence, dispelling the perception of a tyrant God who needlessly takes away resources from His people. 1. Tithing is a part of Israel’s

covenantal relationship with God. While tithing was required under Mosaic Law, the act of tithing reveals a posture of loving obedience to His commands, demonstration of one’s loyalties to God (versus loyalty to one’s possessions) (Deuteronomy 14:23).

From Genesis to Malachi, the Old Testament is filled with several accounts of tithing.

2. Tithing is to occur despite one’s

circumstances. In times of plenty and want, tithing a portion of one’s resources demonstrates trust that God would provide for all of His people’s needs (i.e., giving to God does not result in lack) (Deuteronomy 14:29). 3. Tithing is a way of allocating

resources. Tithing ensured the sustenance of the Levites and the priests – a group of people who were responsible for the spiritual well-being of the people (Numbers 18). It also provided resources set aside to care for the socially disadvantaged (i.e., foreigners, orphans, widows) (Deuteronomy 14:29).

1 1 4

TOUGH QUESTIONS 4. Tithing protects God’s people from

the sins of greed, ingratitude, and forgetfulness. By setting apart one’s first fruits for the Lord, tithing was a way of developing a lifestyle of generosity (Leviticus 27:30-33). It was also a reminder of all God had done for the Israelites since freeing them from slavery in Egypt (Deuteronomy 14:23).

5. Tithing is to be managed

according to God’s instructions. When the Levites and priests received tithes, they were to manage these resources according to God-given instructions. The tragedy is that the Israelites would mishandle these resources for selfish purposes (Malachi 3; Leviticus 27:30-34).

TITHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Jesus referred to the concept of tithing on two occasions, evidence that the Jewish people were practicing it during New Testament times. In Matthew 23:23, He rebuked the Pharisees for tithing while neglecting more important matters such as justice, mercy and faithfulness. When sharing a parable of the Pharisee and tax collector (Luke 18:9-14), Jesus criticized a Pharisee who was praising his faithfulness in fasting and giving tithes yet looked down on those he considered unrighteous. Jesus’ ministry also spent a great deal of time talking about wealth. Of His 38 parables, 16 had to do with finances. He often warned His audience about the pitfalls of greed, instructing them to prioritize God’s Kingdom agenda over their lives and possessions (Matthew 6:19-24, 33; Luke 12:13-21).

1 1 5

Beyond the Gospel, many New Testament writers addressed wealth and giving in ways that parallel the principles of Old Testament tithing. 1. Giving is rooted in one’s

relationship with God in Christ (2 Corinthians 8:5). 2. Christians are to demonstrate

generosity in times of plenty and want (Acts 2:45; 4:32-37; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5; 9:6), giving in proportion to what they have received (1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:7). 3. Christians give to support

ministry workers and the socially disadvantaged (Acts 2:45; 4:32-37; Philippians 4:15-16; 1 Corinthians 9:14, 16:1; 2 Corinthians 8-9; 1 Timothy 6:18).

TOUGH 4. A lifestyle of generosity and

contentment guards against greed, ingratitude and forgetfulness of God’s goodness to us (1 Timothy 6:6-10, 17-19, 2 Timothy 3:2).

5. Money collected in the name of

the Lord must be managed with accountability and utmost care. Failure to do so leads to serious consequences (Acts 4:35; 1 Corinthians 16:3; Acts 5:1-11).1

TITHING AND THE LAW

If tithing was under Old Testament covenants and we now live in the age of the new covenant (Luke 22:20), does that cancel out the requirement to tithe? While certain practices in the Law no longer apply to us today, Jesus and Paul’s teachings show us that the principles of the Law remain.2 Jesus declared that He had not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17-19). Just as the Law taught the Israelites how to be a holy people in the Old Testament, the Word of God (revealed in Jesus) teaches Christians how to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation before God (c.f., 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6; 5:10). Jesus’ fulfillment of the Law was also emphasized by Paul when he states that the Gospel concerning Jesus (Romans 3:21, 31), crucified but resurrected on the third day (Romans 1:1-3, 16-17), exists not to

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

render the law void but to uphold it. Moreover, he asserts in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”) (emphasis mine).

As members of the body of Christ, we are commanded to give intentionally and generously.

The practice of the Law must adapt to new situations and circumstances. Put another way, the theological purpose of the Law remains constant with every generation. Read more about this in Rev Joseph Tan’s article, “Are We Still Bound Under the Laws of the Old Testament?” from Issue 01/2016 of the Trinitarian by scanning this QR code.

1. In keeping with this principle, Paul advised Timothy and Titus to appoint church leaders based on, among other characteristics, their ability to steward wealth (e.g., 1 Timothy 3:3, 8; 6:5, 11; Titus 1:7; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12). 2. Examples include Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16 applied in Ephesians 6:2-3; Deuteronomy 25:4 applied in 1 Corinthians 9:8-12.

TOUGH QUESTIONS

TITHING AND GIVING TODAY

The act of giving should be an outward extension of an inward reality.

As members of the body of Christ, we are commanded to give intentionally and generously. Neither Jesus nor New Testament writers leaves us reason to think otherwise. Moreover, no alternative framework for giving was established. On that basis, the framework of tithing remains a wellproven and well-conceived means for Christians to practice generous and planned giving. Tithing acknowledges that everything comes from and belongs to God. Our giving should not come from a posture of begrudging obligation or an attempt to “curry favor” from God. Our giving must come from a sincere desire to worship God and thank Him for everything we have. Tithing acknowledges God as a faithful and caring Provider. Some are fearful of giving because they worry about not having enough for tomorrow. Tithing helps us overcome the spirit of lack by helping us grow to trust God as the Provider for our every need.

3. In receiving the tithes of His people, the church also must demonstrate wisdom, integrity, transparency and accountability in stewarding these resources – ensuring that they are preserved and used for the advancement of His Kingdom.

1 1 7

Tithing is God’s way of cultivating a lifestyle of stewardship. Matthew 6:21 reminds us that “where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” By regularly setting aside 10 percent of our finances to God, tithing is His way of ensuring that money does not gain a stronghold over us.3

Tithing is a matter of the heart and the start of generous giving. While understanding the reason for tithing is important, our motivation for tithing is equally important. Are we required to give to those we love? Must we be asked or told to give to loved ones? While it’s easy to rationalize that giving comes from a place of plenty, the Macedonians demonstrate the response we ought to have to our covenant-keeping God who has given us much. Despite their poverty, the Macedonians “gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability” (2 Corinthians 8:3). They were not forced or emotionally blackmailed since Paul records that “they urgently pleaded…for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints” (8:4). Giving should never come from a place of compulsion, duty, or a self-serving heart as God desires His people to be extravagant givers – men and women who freely and frequently release their wealth as an act of worship. The Macedonians freely gave of their wealth because they learned to “give themselves first of all to the Lord” (8:5). Whether we are in plenty or in want, the act of giving should be an outward extension of an inward reality – an act of pure and simple joy that tells God, “Thank You. I love You. I want to honor You with my wealth through this tithe.”

TOUGH QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Let’s ask once again: Is tithing still required post-Old Testament? As members of the body of Christ, we are commanded to give intentionally and generously. Since no alternative framework for giving was established, the framework of tithing remains a well-proven and well-conceived means for Christians to practice generous and planned giving. Beyond Scriptural evidence, my hope is that this article has provided enough reasoned motivation to go from being worried-tentative with God to confident-generous in Him. When we recognize how gracious, good, and faithful God has been and will continue to

be, our reaction will naturally go from, “Why should I give?” to “Why shouldn’t I give?” We will become people less concerned with calculating our 10 percent to people who dare to give all of our tithes and much, much more. Generosity is one of God’s eternal attributes and a virtue He desires to see in all His people. That is why “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7) for it reflects how cheerfully God gives us all that we need. As God continues to enable us to earn or receive wealth, let us continue to develop godly habits of tithing and managing our resources so that we can constantly honor God and bless others with our wealth.
