As a result, his family life suffered. One day, he finds the HDB flats he helped to build have been demolished and replaced. As he sees his life’s work disappear, Lim begins to contemplate what really matters.To his children, he is a stranger. The relationships with his family appear strained beyond repair. Will Lim be able to mend these damaged relationships? What legacy will he leave for the generations to come?

Dear Pastor Dennis, I attended Sunday service on October 11, 2015 at Trinity@Paya Lebar, the day before I started my new job. Dear Trinitarians and friends, Blessed Christmas to you and your family! Many of us look forward to the Christmas season. After all, Andy Williams sings that it’s “the most wonderful time of the year” and “the happiest season of all!” A time of celebrations and presents, we look forward to feasting with friends and family. However, some may find few reasons to celebrate when we see the turmoil taking place in our world. Events such as the attacks in Paris, the bombings in Beirut, and schools shootings throughout the US have shaken us. Moreover,

some of us also are personally facing trials and tribulations and wonder if it’s possible to be happy. Perhaps happiness is not what God wants us to have. Instead, God wants us to be filled with His joy. Joy in the midst of pain. Peace in the midst of a storm. Find out how you can live a joyfilled life in the focus section “Today I Choose Joy” – p40. With this joy, allow God to bring victory into your life. When we choose to submit our struggles and weaknesses to God, know that He transforms our remote desert

into a refreshing oasis, a broken place into a beautiful place, and an awful valley into an awesome mountaintop. In this issue, read about how Hon Yew overcame his addictions and experienced a new life in Christ in “Out of Control Into His Control” – p34. The joy of the Lord is not something we can keep to ourselves. Each of us carry His presence and we can be agents of transformation in other people’s lives. As the #Jubilee50K Challenge continues to gain momentum, choose to show God’s favor by seeking and “Meeting the Needs of Others” – p30. In fact, the pastoral staff is so thankful for the Trinitarians that chose to meet our need of “daily bread” by blessing us with healthy snacks and hearty meals! PERHAPS HAPPINESS IS NOT WHAT GOD WANTS US TO HAVE. INSTEAD, GOD WANTS US TO BE FILLED WITH HIS JOY. JOY IN THE MIDST OF PAIN. PEACE IN THE MIDST OF A STORM.

Vision Rally and Vision Weekend 2015 This year, Trinitarians were called to remember its roots and charge forward as they gathered for “3 days, 2-gether in 1 PLace.” Trinitarians came – from September 18 to 20 – for Vision Rally and Vision Weekend in eager anticipation to see God’s vision for the church. June Teh shares her experience in this faith-building event.

or many Trinitarians, the words “Trinity Christian Centre” evoke images of our iconic buildings at Trinity@Adam and Trinity@Paya Lebar. Not everyone remembers the humble beginnings of our church – the foundations laid by missionaries, as well as former Senior Pastor Naomi Dowdy: a woman bold enough to lead early Trinitarians into the greater things of God. Over three days Reverend Wilfredo de Jesús (affectionately known as Pastor Choco), Senior Pastor of New Life Covenant Church (Chicago, Illinois (USA)) challenged Trinitarians not to become comfortable and complacent, to constantly stretch their faith by giving and doing more for the Kingdom. Why? Because someone has to pay so that others can be reconciled with God.

VISION RALLY AND VISION WEEKEND 2015

Reverend Wilfredo used characters and parables to illustrate how sacrifice is needed for the lost and hurting to have a relationship with God. In fact, he reminded each of us that God himself paid the ultimate price when He gave His only beloved son so that we could be reconciled with Him. Read his full sermon on p24. Trinitarians were called to catch God’s heartbeat and vision for the church, to stretch their faith and give to building God’s House so that others could have a “home” where they could be reconciled with God. In the moment of truth, Trinitarians responded to the

message by submitting their Vision Faith Promise Cards. Each time the Vision Faith Promise amount increased, and cheers rang out at each SGD50,000 mark, something stirred within me: a realization of how God had worked in the hearts of His people. Huiqi, who attended the Vision Weekend for the first time, shares “the presence of God was so strong and I felt the entire Sanctuary fill with hope and excitement for the greater things to come. Even though I was in the midst of a spiritually dry season, I experienced a restoration of clarity and renewal of my spirit. It was amazing how God refocused my life entirely. I now resolve to live for Him, to embrace His

heartbeat for the lost, and to pay the price so that more people can come to know Jesus.”

Our IGNYTErs also experienced their own breakthroughs in giving as they allowed God to stretch their faith.

I am truly proud to be a Trinitarian, a family of believers who are not just hearers but doers of the word. I am blessed that Trinitarians choose to give not based on what they had but based on faith in His provision.

Building God’s House! In Trinity, we believe that children can learn to build God’s house! Through the September series, Builders Inc., our children and pre-teens learned the heart of giving towards the vision God has for Trinity. Carol Lim shares the interaction she had with her pre-teen daughter and advice on how Trinitarian parents can help their children understand and fulfill the Vision Faith Promise.

“W

hat did you learn at the service today?” Glancing at her sermon notes from last week “Build by Giving”, I was interested to hear what Discovery Land, and its Vision Weekend guest speakers – Pastor Mei Yee, Pastor Wai Wai, Pastor Melanie, and Sister Wendy – were teaching her. My daughter’s little eyes sparkled. Her voice could hardly contain her excitement. “Mum, do you know something? Grandparent’s service is going to be shifted to Paya Lebar, you know? They are upgrading the Adam Road church!” she exclaimed, “I saw the artist’s impression of that place! Oh my! It is beautiful and BIG!” Riding on her excitement, I probed on. “So how are you building by giving?” I asked, “Why do want to give?”

“It is because I want to build God’s house!” she said with confidence, “I will take from my piggy bank! My friends are giving too!” I am so encouraged to see in her a faith that does not question, calculate, or rationalize. Indeed, faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains! I used the remainder of the conversation as an opportunity to deepen her understanding of the Vision Faith Promise. I wanted her to know that, in the days to come, she can look at Trinity Christian Centre and proudly declare that she is “part of Trinity’s legacy!” As a parent, I understand the temptation to “help” our children fulfill their Vision Faith Promise. After all, the amount they promise is small. Instead, let’s help our children to take ownership of their faith promise, to bring them to a point where they can confidently say, “We did our part to build God’s House!”

Parents, here are some simple things you can do to help your children understand and take ownership of their Vision Faith Promise! 1

Ask what they have learned during Builder’s Inc.

Help them understand the meaning of the Vision Faith Promise: • A commitment, made in faith, where we ask God how much He wants us to give and trust that He will provide that amount; and • A commitment made over and above our normal tithes and offerings.

Work with them to determine how they can fulfill their Vision Faith Promise (e.g., calculating how much they need to save for the day/week).

Help them brainstorm ways to fulfill their Vision Faith Promise (e.g., doing housework to earn extra pocket money).

Teach them how to fill out an Offering Envelope and allow them to complete their own Offering Envelope on a regular basis.

Set aside time to pray for the fulfillment of their Vision Faith Promise.

astor Dominic took me on a tour of your facility here at Trinity@Paya Lebar. As I walked through the halls of your church, I’ve learned that you have a rich and powerful history. I’ve learned that you are called “Trinitarians”. I love that because it means you walk with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I’ve also learned of the missionaries that laid of the foundations of this church, that in the course of 45 The purpose of the church is to bring transformation.

years God had brought this church to where it is today. SO, WHY DO YOU EXIST AS A CHURCH, AS TRINITY CHRISTIAN CENTRE? WHAT’S YOUR PURPOSE HERE ON EARTH? WHAT’S YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? The purpose of the church is to bring transformation. Trinity, you are called to do more than occupy a seat; you are called to bring transformation! Many have come before you. They have given sacrificially so this, your current church facilities, can exist. You and I are enjoying the bounty

of someone’s sacrifice. It is easy to forget that someone paid the price in order for us to experience what we have today. Trinity has built this great Sanctuary to the glory of God. God has blessed your congregation with beautiful facilities. Now, God is watching from heaven to see what Trinity does next. Will this church keep on taking or will it be willing to give? I tell you to give. God has no problem working through you, for He “…owns the cattle on a thousand hills” (Psalms 50:10)! The greatest legacy that we can leave on planet is that our children, both biological and spiritual, love

Jesus and choose to impact the destinies of others. I believe that one man’s obedience is can impact the destinies of many. Trinitarians, understand that each of you have been called to impact destinies of many. Early Trinitarians have invested in the church so that she could be established. However, Trinity can never become comfortable with what God has done in this church; there is a danger in becoming complacent as a ministry.

ENVISION

AUDACIOUS FAITH: CROSSING OVER FOR THE DOUBLE PORTION

God expects the older generation to pass on treasures of truth to the next generation so that they would know that this church was built by the hand of God! I believe God has called Trinitarians to do more. I’m here to challenge you to go above and beyond, to do greater things. God’s Kingdom is always advancing from glory to glory. There’s so much more to do in Singapore and around the world.

Church, know that God wants to continue using Trinity to be a blessing! So how does Trinity move forward? To answer this, we look into 2 Kings 2:1-15. At this moment in time, Elijah was preparing to leave the ministry, handing the mantle to his protégé, Elisha. 2 Kings 2:1-15 represents Jesus calling the church into action. He is calling this church to move, to go forward and fulfill her call.

2 Kings 2:1-15 When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. 3 The company of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha and asked, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?” “Yes, I know,” Elisha replied, “so be quiet.” 4 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, Elisha; the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho. 5 The company of the prophets at Jericho went up to Elisha and asked him, “Do you know that the Lord is going to take your master from you today?” “Yes, I know,” he replied, “so be quiet.” 6 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them walked on. 7 Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. 8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to 1

the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” 11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. 15 The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, “The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

Before we go further, let’s take some time to understand the similarities and differences between these two men as well as what their lives represent.

HOW DOES TRINITY MOVE FORWARD TO FULFILL HER CALL?

Second, choose to walk with a double portion of the Holy Spirit.

First, choose to walk together. Elijah and Elisha represent different generations: the old and the young. Sometimes, it’s difficult to bring these two generations together because they are so different! Regardless of their differences, we note Elijah and Elisha always walked together. Similarly, if Trinity is to move forward – to build on the foundations that have been laid – the older generation must bring the next generation along. She cannot take on the mentality that, “You go one way and I’ll go another.” Instead, the young and the old must learn to work together, to take on the mindset that, “You need me and I need you.”

We read that Elisha audaciously asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit in (2 Kings 2:9). Why? Because Elisha recognized that he would need a double portion in order to accomplish his God-given destiny! Scripture records that Elisha did five times more miracles than his mentor. If we use the Bible’s math that means that our generation, and the generations after us, will do greater things for the glory of God! If we are to accomplish even more than the generations before us, we must be like Elisha, hungry for that double portion and willing to pay the price to receive it. HOW FAR WILL TRINITY GO IN HER CALL?

The older generation must show the younger how good God has been to this church. In fact, God expects the older generation to pass on treasures of truth to the next generation so that they would know that this church was built by the hand of God!

Trinity, God is calling this church to action. Will she choose to go all the way or settle for less? Let’s follow Elijah and Elisha’s journey to Gilgal, 27

AUDACIOUS FAITH: CROSSING OVER FOR THE DOUBLE PORTION

Bethal, Jericho, and the Jordan River (2 Kings 2:1-6). Elijah and Elisha didn’t travel to these cities by happenstance; each city has significance for the Israelites as well as for us today. Gilgal – The City of New Beginnings The first stop in the journey was the city of Gilgal, an important place in Israel’s history; the place where Joshua and the Israelites camped before their miraculous crossing of the Jordan River (Joshua 4:19-24). The Hebrew translation for Gilgal is “circle”– something that rolls. In Gilgal, God reminded His people that, “I have rolled away the reproach of the Egyptians from you.” The city represents a place of “new beginnings.” At Gilgal, Elijah tells Elisha to, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to Bethel” (2 Kings 2:2). In its original context, the word “stay” means to “serve judgement” or to “consider the cost.” If Elisha were to continue the journey, it would cost him something. However, Elisha did not stay in Gilgal; he chose to go wherever Elijah went! Similarly, if you need a new beginning in your life, stay in Gilgal. After all, it is the place where God will “roll away the reproach.” However, understand that “Gilgal moments” are seasonal – a set period of time where you experience special refreshment from God. The season will eventually end and if you choose to remain beyond the appointed season, you will see yourself going in circles – going nowhere.

You are not called to get stuck in the mud or stay at the banks of the river; you are called to cross over and move forward!

If you are like Elisha and you are not satisfied with just having a new beginning, then it’s time to go 28

forward! Bethel – The City of Dreams and Calling The second stop in the journey was the city of Bethel, the “house of God.” Bethel was the city where Jacob dreamed of a stairway where angels ascended to heaven and descending to earth (Genesis 28:10-22). It was the place where God confirms Jacob’s calling. Similarly, if you want God to confirm your calling, stay in Bethel. After all, who doesn’t want to stay in the house of God? However, understand that we are required to move forward in our calling, to follow His presence wherever it leads us. If you are like Elisha and you want more than God’s house – you want to be where God’s presence and anointing is – then keep moving! Jericho – The City of Past Victories The third stop in the journey was the city of Jericho, the site of Joshua’s first victory in the Promised Land. In Jericho, the walls came tumbling down! Similarly, if you want to live in past victories, stay in Jericho. However, know that there’s more about being Christian than relishing in past victories – there are even more cities to conquer and larger victories to claim! We are called to continually seek God’s vision and operate in the Holy Spirit! Elisha didn’t want to stay in Jericho. He wanted to continue because he knew that wherever his mentor went, there the blessings and anointing were. If you are not content with past victories – you want to continue to experience the blessings and anointing of God – then keep going! The Jordan River – Crossing Over on Dry Ground The Jordan River was the place where the people of Israel crossed over on dry ground (Joshua 3). We see God’s goodness at work here; He pays attention to even the smallest detail of their lives!

Holy Spirit to active his God-given destiny. God is moving in this church; things are happening and people are getting saved! Don’t miss what He’s doing here. Don’t lose sight of the vision God has for this house! It is much easier for His people to cross on dry ground so that they don’t get stuck in the mud.

If Trinity wants to move to the next level, she needs to be audacious with God! Church, when you choose to cross the Jordan River, to walk in obedience and faith, heaven opens! All resources that are at the disposal of heaven will be ours! We should never come to a place of going around in circles. We should never come to a place of contentment because we are called to do greater things for the glory of God! Trinity, Singapore and the world is watching for your next move. You are standing at the threshold of greater things. What will you do from here? More importantly, what price are you willing to pay to move forward?

Notice how Elijah and Elisha also walked across the Jordan River on dry ground (2 Kings 2:8). After Elijah ascended to heaven, Elisha took up the cloak of his teacher, parted the Jordan River, and crossed over once more. Upon seeing this phenomenon, the prophets of Jericho immediately recognized Elisha as Elijah’s successor (2 Kings 2:14-15). They saw the Spirit of God was now with him and that a new season had begun. Elisha would go on to perform even greater exploits than his mentor, Elijah!

Choose to pay the price, receive a double portion of God’s anointing, and use your lives to impact the destinies of many.

Trinitarians, choose to cross the threshold by committing to: • Hunger for the things of God; • Seek to be aligned for God’s assignment; and • Arise in greater faith for God’s vision and purpose for Trinity Christian Centre.

Trinity, what God has prepared for you – the church and its facilities – is dry ground. The Spirit of God rests upon this place! Like the Israelites, like Elisha, you are not called to get stuck in the mud or stay at the banks of the river; you are called to cross over and move forward! Asking and Receiving the Double Portion At the end of the journey, 2 Kings 2:9 records the final dialogue Elijah had with Elisha, a time when the protégé asks for a double portion of his mentor’s spirit. Elisha asked audaciously in order to continue; he knew that he needed even more of the

So we purchased and blessed them with 2 fans with lights to light up and cool their rooms. Praise the Lord they enjoyed the improved conditions in their house. #jubilee50k

This reminds me of the Great Commission and living with God’s heart and love for His creation. Into His Control Hon Yew’s opponents stared with anticipation at his next move. Slowly, his thumb felt the underside of the tile. “Pong!” he shouted as he flipped over the tile, “I win!” He drew from his cigarette, smug at his latest victory. It was 2.30 in the morning and his bloodshot eyes gave away a habit of late nights. Another throw of the dice and the mahjong tiles cracked once again, the sound echoing into the night. It seemed impossible for Hon Yew to be set free from his destructive lifestyle. However, Daniel Koh Zhiguo shares how God transformed Hon Yew’s life in the most incredible way.

Worldly Addictions

on Yew’s troubles began when he started working at a construction site after O-Levels. After a long day of hard labor, Hon Yew would unwind by hanging out with friends over ice-cold mugs of beer.

Now that he was earning his own money, Hon Yew indulged in his smoking habit. He was rarely seen without a cigarette or a cloud of gray nicotine-laced smoke. “I would smoke close to two packets (40 sticks) of cigarettes a day,” Hon Yew revealed. Soon, he began making “harmless” bets. During football matches, he and his kakis (friends) would wager small amounts at the local kopitiam. Hon Yew enjoyed the fun of earning “instant money” and the relationships built on cigarettes and alcohol. Once he was hooked on gambling, Hon Yew actively searched for any and every form of betting he could get is money in: 4D lottery, horseracing, cards, mahjong, online betting. He enjoyed the rush that came with winning. However, the House always wins. Eventually, Hon Yew found himself borrowing sums of money from his family and close friends to support his gambling habit. Eventually, he had incurred debts of SGD15,000 and started borrowing money from Ah Longs (loan sharks). Hon Yew’s family – his wife Sharon and their two small children (their eldest, Rachel, was in Primary 2 at the time) – also felt the strain of his destructive lifestyle. Although Hon Yew hid his addictions well – neither Rachel, nor his son, Lewis, were aware of his habits – he was rarely home and had a very distant relationship with his wife and children. Sharon constantly worried about Hon Yew. A believer since secondary school, she knew that there was nothing she could do to turn him around; only God would be able to transform her husband. Instead of giving up, she chose to trust God, rallying her carecell to cover Hon Yew and the family in prayer. Godly Intervention Hon Yew’s path to freedom came in the most unlikely way: a chance encounter with Trinity’s church bulletin that Sharon brought home one weekend. In it, Hon Yew read about Trinity’s humanitarian missions trips.

“A pre-believer at the time, I was interested in going for a mission trip because it was charity work. I signed up and even encouraged a friend to join me!” Unbeknownst to Hon Yew, this mission trip would be the first of many in the years to come.

HE WAS RARELY SEEN WITHOUT A CIGARETTE OR A CLOUD OF GRAY NICOTINE-LACED SMOKE. After returning from the missions trip, God continued to lead Hon Yew back to Him. During an overseas assignment, when he was away for over a year, Hon Yew would read the Gospel booklets that Sharon packed for in his bag. Slowly, he found himself drawing to God. “There was one time I visited a temple and started to feel uncomfortable, something in my spirit just didn’t feel right,” Hon Yew shared. “Another time, while traveling to an inspection site by boat, a small voice asked me, ‘Is this the type of life you’re searching for?’ In that moment, I knew that it was God challenging me to make a choice. It was time to make a decision: to stick to my old ways or to pursue a life that only God could give me.“Upon returning, Hon Yew told Sharon he was ready to give his life to God.

After becoming a Christian, Hon Yew began reading the Bible diligently. The more he read, the more life he found in God’s Word. “I think I read more books in my first year as a Christian than I have in my whole life combined!” Hon Yew exclaimed. “I read the Bible because I wanted to know God more. Slowly, God began to reveal Himself. He showed me more of His love and His perfect will. I had a radical change in my heart when I discovered that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.” “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2)

Convicted of the need to live in line with the Word of God, Hon Yew quit his job; he was no longer comfortable with the way the business was run. He also tried to break free from his addictions. “I tried to quit smoking by using fewer cigarettes each month, week, and day. However, I kept smoking. I tried to stop gambling by placing smaller bets or betting less frequently. Nevertheless, the urge remained. I tried to drink less and go to clubs less often but the temptation was always there. It was tough and I was going nowhere,” Hon Yew shared. As he struggled through his addictions, God revealed the following verses during his time alone with God: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

THAT DAY, GOD PERFORMED A MIRACLE IN MY LIFE. FROM THAT MOMENT ON, I DID NOT CRAVE CIGARETTES OR SUFFER FROM WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. MY GAMBLING AND DRINKING HABITS ALSO STOPPED SUDDENLY AND COMPLETELY!

“After reading these verses, I claimed this promise into my life. I immediately stood up, pulled out the pack of cigarettes from my bag, crushed the box, and threw the cigarette pack in the dustbin. That day, God performed a miracle in my life. From that moment on, I did not crave cigarettes or suffer from withdrawal symptoms. My gambling and drinking habits also stopped suddenly and completely! Hallelujah!” Hon Yew exclaimed. In the beginning, his friends were skeptical of the sudden transformation. They assumed the change was temporary, another one of their friend’s failed attempts at quitting. “That was more than 6 years ago,” he exclaimed, “I know His healing is real! In the earlier days, I used my own strength to get rid of these addictions. All I actually needed to do was to be obedient to Him (“…in all your ways submit to

him…”) and claim His promises (“…and he will make your paths straight…”). A Light to the World God continues to be a strong presence in Hon Yew’s life. Since quitting his previous job, he has built a career in a different industry and has paid off all his gambling debts. His family life also has been transformed! Previously a distant father figure, Hon Yew ensures that a family-oriented and Godcentered lifestyle is a top priority in his life. As a result, Hon Yew now enjoys a close relationship with his wife and children, bonds that are continually strengthened over shared mealtimes and family prayer. Hon Yew’s purpose for serving has even changed! Since Christ transformed his life, he gives of his time, talents, and treasures with a grateful heart.

Because Happiness Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Enough

“I deserve to be happy!” “Happiness” was written into the Singapore National Pledge next to “prosperity” and “progress.” Our forefathers believed that the pursuit of happiness was so important that it needed to be inculcated into the national consciousness. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, society believed that happiness revolved around achieving the Singapore Dream, the 5Cs: cash, car, credit card, condominium, and club membership. Decades later, this dream has upgraded to the 5Bs: BMW, bungalow, billionaire, bank, and boss. While Singapore and its people generally have achieved great prosperity and progress, there is a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction all around us. “If only I had a little more of this, then I would be happy.” “If only my life was a certain way, then I would be happy.” Despite living in one of the most modern, clean, and safe cities in the world, there are still many things that can rob our happiness. Why? Because the road of life is never straight; it is filled with many unpleasant bumps and unexpected turns. We come to work one morning to find out we are being retrenched next week. We go into the doctor’s office with a minor ache and find out that we have a life-threatening illness. We discover that someone we have a close relationship with has betrayed our trust. Because life doesn’t always go the way we want it to, happiness seems to be a pursuit with no end in sight, an impossible goal.

If happiness is so elusive, why do we continue to chase it? Does God even want us to be happy? In the Bible (NIV translation), the word “happy” is used 20 times; “happiness” – the state of being happy – is found in only six times. However, the word “joy” is used over 200 times; “rejoice” – the act of displaying joy – over 150 times. In nearly every instance where the word “happy” (or “happiness”) is used, it is connected to circumstances. In contrast, where the words “joy” and “rejoice” are used, it generally relates to an attitude of the heart. Therefore, God seems more concerned that we live in joy rather than bask in happiness. So what exactly is joy? Where does it come from and how do we make it part of our lives? Discover God’s promises for you, to experience a joyfilled life, in this section!

As long as you and I live on Planet Earth, we are subject to the realities of life. The Bible tells us that we are living in the last days â&#x20AC;&#x201C; days of pestilence, famine, and war. Therefore, we cannot live like ostriches putting our heads in the sand and pretending that trials and tribulations do not exist. Isaiah 43 reminds us that there are three certainties that we will encounter in our daily lives.

Isaiah 43:1-5 But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, Jacob,  he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;  I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead.  4 Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. 5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you. 1

THE CERTAINTY OF

TURBULENT TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS No one is exempt from obstacles or painful experiences because these things are a consequence of living in a fallen world.

Isaiah 43:1-5 speaks of times when: “…[we] pass through the waters…” “...[we] pass through the rivers…” and “…[we] walk through the fire…” The Bible does not say “if we pass through,” or “some will pass through,” or “those who are weak pass through,” or “when sinners pass through.” It is a certainty that we will pass through such waters and fire, trials and tribulations! The Hebrew word for “when” has the connotation of “indeed,” a certainty that we will go through periods of trials and tribulations in this life. What are some of these trials and tribulations? Deep and rushing waters = Obstacles The people of Israel experienced major crises on their way to the Promised Land, crises involving deep and rushing waters. One such crisis happened in Exodus 44

14 when the Israelites reached the Red Sea, and Pharaoh’s army was in hot pursuit behind them. The other such instance was recorded in Joshua 3 when, after 40 years in the wilderness, they encountered the Jordan River at flood time. The river was impossible to cross during that season. However, if they chose not to cross, they would have to go back into the wilderness. Just as the Israelites encountered deep and rushing waters to get to the Promised Land, we also will encounter obstacles in our lives: a difficult job situation, financial difficulties, poor/failing health, broken relationships. This list is by no means complete since obstacles come in all shapes and sizes Fire = Painful experiences The book of Isaiah documents how the nation of Israel saw their homeland devastated and its people taken into captivity by the Assyrians and Babylonians. During this time of captivity, Daniel and his three friends — Hananiah,

Mishael and Azariah – faced the lions and the fiery furnace. Like these captive Israelites, some of us might be going through painful experiences right now: betrayal, persecution from family/ friends, or an abusive relationship. We might even wonder why God allows such pain to occur in our lives. The Bible tells us that everyone will go through trials and tribulations, seasons of deep frustration and anguish. No one is exempt from obstacles or painful experiences because these things are a consequence of living in a fallen world. Sometimes, trials and tribulations are the consequence of bad decisions. Other times, it could be a season where God wants to test us. Regardless of the reason, James 1:2 reminds us to, “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials.” Why? Because we have the grace of God to sustain us!

Christians and non-Christians alike will be subject to trials and tribulations. However, when Christians encounter these difficult times, we have the assurance that God is with us! Isaiah 43:2 reminds us that, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.” God promises that He will be with us during trials and tribulations. However, why can we still feel that God is not with us during these times of difficulty? Three reasons: First, the devil wants us to believe that we are all alone. When the devil convinces us that are walking through a dark tunnel all by ourselves, we become defeated and lose the strength to take the next step. We lose the ability to walk victoriously and don’t have the energy, or capacity, to release the Holy Spirit to work out victory in our situations.

Notice how God repeats certain phrases in Isaiah 43:1-5. “I will be with you.” “Do not fear (Fear not).” “Do not be afraid.” It is imperative that we remember God’s tenacious presence in our lives, especially in seasons of trials and tribulations. Second, the devil wants us to remain fearful and anxious. Feelings of fear and anxiousness are very real reactions we have when we face of trials and tribulations. However, if we place our focus on these feelings, we turn our focus away from the Almighty God, crippling our daily thoughts and actions. That’s why the Bible reminds us to: “Fear not.” “Do not be afraid.” Why? Because God did not give us a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7)! Third, the devil wants us to believe that the situation is impossible. Once he has convinced us that we are alone and has trapped us in fear and anxiousness, we will naturally believe that our situation is impossible. However, Matthew 19:26 promises us that, “…with God, all things are possible!”

When we go through trials and tribulations, it’s easy for peace to leave our lives – for us to become physically fatigued, emotionally disjointed, and relationally wrecked. The truth is that God is with us! His presence will keep us walking on dry ground and shield us from the fire! In times of trials and tribulations, it is so important for us to acknowledge and enter into the presence of God, for these are the times when we draw: Comfort from His love for us; • Assurance that He is in control of all things; • Strength and courage to persevere; and • Joy in knowing that He is with us and will lead us to victory. Because God’s presence is so crucial for victory, we must learn to believe and claim it in our lives! We must proclaim the truth of His presence in our lives so that the devil will not defeat us, that “We are not alone!,” “God is with us and our households!,” “God is with us and that’s why this is going to work!” 45

FOCUS THE CERTAINTY OF TURBULENT TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS

TREMENDOUS #3 OUR VALUE TO GOD THE CERTAINTY OF

A 2011 Pew Research Center report on the world’s Christian population documented that over 2.1 billion people identified themselves as Christians. With so many Christians on Planet Earth, it is easy to feel small and insignificant; sometimes we wonder if He hears our prayers or even knows who we are. However, Isaiah 43:1 tells us that He created, formed, and redeemed us. We are so precious to Him that He calls us by name! We are not just a statistic or “another child” in His Kingdom; God knows exactly who we are! Where God is concerned, we are of tremendous value to Him. We are so highly valued that God calls us “precious” (Isaiah 43:4), His “treasured possession” (Deuteronomy 28:18), the “apple of His eye” (Zechariah 2:8), the favored one! In Isaiah 43:4, God says, “I give Egypt for your ransom...” God is willing to trade an entire nation in exchange for us! We are so valuable, so treasured by God that He would come down, hold our hands, and tell us that He will not let us walk through these trials and tribulations alone. He says: “I will keep you. I will shield you. I will make sure that no matter what happens, I will keep you afloat. You will walk through the waters and the fire!” Notice that God does not say walk around, through! Though it is human nature to go around a problem, God know that the shortest distance is between two points. More than it being the shortest distance, it is the journey He brings us on to reveal to us His presence and how much we mean to Him.

There was a great evangelist whose daughter was paralyzed from the leg down. While they were moving house, his daughter – Mini – asked if she could help carry some packages. He responded by asking how she could help; she couldn’t even carry herself! Mini responded by saying this, “Daddy, I just want to carry the package because I know you will carry me.” Immediately the evangelist realized a biblical truth: that we are not alone. Just as his daughter knew that she could carry the package so long as her father was carrying her. Trials and tribulations may paralyze us to a point where we can no longer go through them alone. However, we are so valuable to God that His promise is to carry us through these situations. God has redeemed us through the great exchange: the life of His only begotten Son – Jesus Christ – for our lives (John 3:16). If God is willing do that, there’s nothing to stop God from lavishing His love upon us today! As we go through the certainties of trials and tribulations, God’s presence is with us. However difficult life may get, remember that God has us in His mighty hands. He assures us that, in the end for, “…all things work out for the good of those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) Whether we are going through

deep and rushing waters or fires, learn to claim the presence of God! Claim the truth that we are so precious to Him and that He will not let us go through these times alone. In our pain, remember that God will make a way for us. He will see us through to victory!

It is a masterpiece of dialogue, setting, and screenwriting, but the true genius of the show lies in the depth of the characters, especially the lead, Don Draper.

owns beautiful things. He gets anything he wants but ultimately he is still unresolved. Draper’s plight is representative of the very thing most people spend their lives pursuing, yet not finding…Happiness. Think about it. How many times have you heard someone utter the phrase, “All I want is to be happy?” Yet, how many people do you know who actually seem content? Few, if any.

The reason for this is that “happiness” so many of us search for is not something that will bring our souls rest. See, when you boil it down, happiness is a form of contentment that is the result of circumstances working out in our favor. It is a magical balance of satisfaction and glee that results when life goes the way we want it to. The problem is, happiness is based upon things that are ultimately outside our control.

HAPPINESS IS BASED UPON THINGS THAT ARE ULTIMATELY OUTSIDE OUR CONTROL

FOCUS JOY > HAPPINESS: WHY THESE TWO WORDS ARE ACTUALLY POLAR OPPOSITES

Though we may have seasons of “happiness” in our lives, trying to be “happy” as a destination, as a permanent residence, is a precarious goal, at best. Why? Because circumstance cannot be trusted. As soon as we think life has finally gone our way, a close friend gets into a car accident, or a relative develops cancer. Then what? The happy state we fought so desperately for deserts us again, and we realize we are once again dissatisfied. It’s like investing in friendship with a fun, but ultimately fickle friend. You know the type: When the times are good, you have a blast. You share inside jokes. You party together. You create memories. But when life gets real and you need someone to get in the mud with you, they are nowhere to be found. So it is with happiness. And here is the final truth about happiness: the more we make it

our goal, the less likely we are to find it. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to invest in fickle friendships. I would rather invest in something that I can count on. Joy, however, is something entirely different than happiness, even though the two terms are often used synonymously. Joy is a state of the soul that has nothing to do with circumstance. It is based on the knowledge of a God that does not change. Because He never leaves us hanging, we can count on Him. He never bails on a meet-up, never forgets to return a call, and never bats an eye at getting into the muck and mire with us. He will be there when we need someone to shed a tear with, and He will be there when life works out in our favor as well. That is His character. This simple knowledge, actually produces joy, which is a reaction to unchanging truth. Joy defeats the sorrow we are promised to face in this life, no matter how dark and insurmountable those

moments may seem to be. It is the reminder that although we will wake up one day soon with sagging flesh, aching joints and poor eyesight, there is something beyond this life. It is a reminder that although death may creep at the bedroom door, I know that my soul will pass into a realm of being that far surpasses this one. Therefore, joy is something that is possible to have in every season of life and is greater than even our most pleasant days, even our most perfect circumstances. Happiness is circumstantial. Joy is transcendent, supernatural, and therefore, far superior. Search for happiness and you will not find it. Search for God and you will find joy, a fruit far more satisfying than the temporary bliss that so many are fighting fruitlessly to find.

Sabotage Joy You’d be surprised how many common practices can get in the way of contentment.

’m not sure if it was the scowl on her face or the glare in her eye that gave it away, but this 14-year-old girl was definitely not happy.

She went on and on and on about how her parents just didn’t understand, how life was so unfair, and how all of her friends were doing it. Knowing that she came from a good home, with good health, a great family and a lot of really nice things, made the empathy factor while listening to her story even harder. But as I listened to her gripe

about her life, I was challenged, because often, the voice of that 14-year-old comes out in me, too. It might not be about petty house rules, but the attitude behind my griping can be just as harmful, if not recognized. While it’s true that life comes with its ups and downs up and downs, in my career as a professional counselor, I’ve observed a few things about happy people— people who are truly joyful even if their circumstances aren’t ideal. No matter what life may bring, there are a few things happy people don’t ever do.

Comparing Your mouth is a powerful instrument, so be sure to use it to speak good things.

Living your life always looking out will prevent you from seeing what God is doing in your life. Looking at what others have is a recipe for disaster. Because no matter what, someone will always be smarter, better-looking, richer, more successful or better-liked than you. Living your life always looking out will prevent you from seeing what God is doing in your life.

Complaining No matter what is going on in their lives, happy people don’t complain. They have a realistic awareness of hardships, but they never fixate on those things. They can be honest when they are struggling, but they don’t allow their mouths to utter words of negativity about the world around them, because they know that what comes out of their mouths is always a reflection of what is going on inside their hearts. Your mouth is a powerful instrument, so be sure to use it to speak good things. When the enemy tempts you to dwell on all that you don’t have, defeat him by praising God for all that He’s given.

Happy people don’t live their life with others as their measuring stick. They don’t compete in an effort to get ahead or be the best, because their value is not rooted in how others are doing, but rather on what God says. Those who are in constant competition with others find themselves

on an emotional roller-coaster, sometimes getting ahead, sometimes falling behind. Happy people root their value in Christ. And that is a value unchanging.

Controlling Because of my “control-freak” tendencies, I have a prayer hanging above my sink that reads: “Lord, grant me the peace to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Happy people understand that some things in life cannot be controlled, and they learn to let go of those things. But here’s the thing about letting go: It only becomes a reality when we grasp the truth that the moment we let go, Someone greater takes control.

Criticizing It’s true that the people who put others down the most are the ones who are struggling the most within themselves. Happy people can easily find the good in others and can just as easily find it in themselves. Whether you are 14 or 104, it’s never too late to start transforming the way we think, the things we speak and the way we interact with the world around us. “Happiness” as the world defines it may not always be possible, but no matter where you are in life, you have the ability to choose joy.

SeventoWays to Cultivate Joy Want more joy in your day? Cultivate it! Joy springs from viewing the day’s events from eternity’s perspective. With this intentional focus, you’re sure to see today differently—with more joy and conviction that God is at work in your life.

Tell Him which of His attributes is your favorite right now. Read the praises of Scripture back to Him—begin with Psalm 103. Join with another believer in prayers of thanksgiving, and delight yourself in His character.

Record the reasons you have to rejoice and the reminders of God’s faithfulness that you encounter in your everyday life. In addition, why not press a leaf from your prayer walks into its pages or include a photo of a person that brings you joy each time you remember him or her? Think big—expand your journal into a “joy box” or a “joy drawer” that brings floods of joy each time you open it.

Joy is contagious—so build relationships with friends whose lives exhibit their confidence in God. Pray for each other that your joy in Christ will continue to increase.

God doesn’t waste the difficult circumstances of your life but uses them to develop His character in you. Review Romans 5 and James 1 for help in processing pressure productively. Joy will sneak up on you when you view your hardest lessons as gifts from God.

Has God met a need? Praise Him! Have your challenges given you greater opportunities to see Him work? Thank Him! Joy flows from a grateful and responsive heart. Before you turn in at night, write down three to five blessings in your “joy journal.” Make it a habit, and watch your joyful attitude grow.

Listen to, sing, and meditate on music that draws your heart nearer to God and His Word.

FILL YOUR MIND WITH MUSIC.

TAKE THE LONG VIEW.

Investors advise their clients not to worry about the daily ups and downs of the stock market—what matters is the long view. Does life present incredible challenges today? Are your reserves at a low, or are you enjoying a content plateau? Regardless of today’s events, take the long view. Remember that God remains in charge of your days and will faithfully develop His character in you.

Remember, joy springs from viewing the day’s events from eternity’s perspective. Trust that God controls your life’s details (Romans 8:28), that He hears your every request (Psalm 116:1), and that His joy will be your strength (Nehemiah 8:10).

JULY TO SEPTEMBER 2015 This quarter, a total of 79 Trinitarians participated in eight Mission Impact Teams (MITs) that went to Cambodia, India, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan. We thank God for the opportunity to send our first MIT to Sri Lanka in the month of September. The team partnered with a local church to connect with people in their community. One MIT to India partnered with Project Rescue in Nagpur to minister to children, youth, and women – all victims of sexual slavery. Members of that MIT participated in four instant healings and 24 baptisms in the Holy Spirit. Another MIT to India saw significant breakthroughs with 12 recorded healings (including healing for a hearing-impaired man) and nearly 700 decisions for Christ! Our pastors continued to go on Training and Consultation trips, equipping churches in Colombia, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and the United States. The leaders were strengthened in faith and equipped to implement carecells. We rejoice that many of these churches have seen the fruit of their

labor in their leadership and open carecells. Trinity continues to sponsor close to 1,200 destitute children in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand. We rejoice with the 20 children that graduated from the sponsorship programs! Kaohsiung, Taiwan Jul 27-Aug 3 25 decisions made for Christ Because I have no biological children and have led an adult carecell for years, I don’t know how to relate with children and youth; it is like they are from another planet! Additionally, I didn’t have a happy childhood and didn’t know what it means to be childlike. During this trip, as we played and ministered to the children, I felt God’s restoration of childhood to me. I had so much joy throughout this trip and God had indeed opened my eyes and expanded my heart for the young. He showed me the need to reach out to the next generation and run well for the next lap of my life. For a start, I intend to change my Ministry Expression from Celebration Host to Nursery and find ways to draw close to my goddaughters. – Brigid Pang

Kaohsiung, Taiwan Aug 24-30 34 decisions made for Christ God taught me that He can and will use “unfavorable” circumstances and situations for His Glory. The city experienced very heavy rain on the night of our scheduled street evangelism and evangelistic event. Although we prayed for the rain to stop, the weather did not improve. During the heavy rain, one of my team members approached a lady waiting under a shelter for the rain to stop. The Gospel was shared and the lady accepted Christ! Another woman – an employee at an amusement park – who had originally turned down our invitation due to work commitments, came for the evangelistic event. Her reason? The amusement park had to close because of bad weather. She also made a decision for Christ! Indeed His ways are higher than ours. – Wang Look Keah

In the third quarter of 2015, our pastors went to seven countries: Colombia, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and the United States to equip churches with the TCC Cell Church Model. In Colombia, close to 500 Spiritual Parents and 190 leaders were taught Carecell Leadersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Training. The time of ministry also saw 530 salvations! In Taiwan, our trainers were encouraged to see how the children took what they learned in the Junior Spiritual Parenting course and experienced personal breakthrough in the area of evangelism.

ur church has been around for many years and we recognize the need to adapt as society changes. Doing things the traditional way would not build stronger relationships among members or develop strong disciples. If we wanted to advance and grow, we would need a renewal in our ministry philosophy. We wanted to recalibrate, however, we were not sure how to do so. We wanted to raise strong leaders but we were unable to find a holistic model that would meet our needs. When we came to know of the TCC Cell Church model, we felt that this was the change we needed. What we treasure most about the TCC Cell Church Model is the philosophy that every member can be discipled to live out the Great Commission. Because people are generally resistant to change, it took time for the church leadership to replace old mindsets and be open to this new philosophy for growth. pastors took the time to answer our many questions, giving us confidence to take a step of faith and change our direction in becoming a cell-based church. Since introducing the TCC Cell Church Model, we have witnessed the next generation grow in their zeal for the Lord; they have become more engaged in serving. Their lives have been ignited and they are indeed vibrantly and passionately living out the Great Commission. We have also seen God expanding the vision for our church: our members and leaders continue to grow in numbers in spirituall maturity. One example is a couple that became new parents. Although they had just entered parenthood, they chose to step up and serve as carecell leaders. It was really encouraging to see how our church members live out their faith and serve largely. Over the past three years, CLM has roughly doubled in attendance from 400 to approximately 800 members. Martin and Esther joined the Ministry and Mentoring (“M2”) Program in 2014. Over the past year, Pastor Dominic Yeo has guided them through the dynamics of church growth. Read on to find out how their experience in the M2 Program has been so far.

We are glad that you are able to join us for the Greater Faith Conference and Trinity Christian Centre’s Vision Rally this year! What is your biggest takeaway from your time in Singapore? Coming to Singapore and seeing

how God is working at such a large scale has been truly inspirational. Not many churches in the UK exceed a thousand members so it has been a faithraising experience to witness a church that much further along in maturity and growth. Beyond the sheer size of the congregation, we experienced the Incredible Unity of the church and the Passionate Honor of Trinitarians toward one another

and the works of God. We sensed a culture that has been nurtured and established over many years. The warmth and generosity of the staff at Trinity Christian Centre was outstanding and we were honored to meet and hear from Pastor Wilfredo de Jesús. It also was humbling for us to be a part of Vision Rally and Vision Weekend, to see the Audacious Fervor of the congregation – expressed in the form of Vision Faith Promises. We felt very privileged to witness such a momentous weekend and we share in the excitement of Trinity@Adam’s redevelopment! Our church moved into a new facility in 2012 with finances geared around a 25-year mortgage. The visit to Trinity Christian Centre has lifted our faith to address the debt and see the building debt-free within the next few years. We are now

planning for our first-ever Faith Promise Weekend in 2016. Trinity has inspired us to keep building, with clear vision and direction, and to continue pushing forward without compromise. With God all things are possible! What is one thing Pastor Dominic has done (or shared) that has left a lasting impact on your ministry/church? Pastor Dominic visited our church in April this year. Over the course of his two days with us, we held a number of meetings so that he could understand how our church worked. On the final meeting, the Senior Leadership gathered to hear his thoughts. He identified three areas we needed to address in order to break through to the next level of influence and impact: (1) managing the capacity problem of

our weekend services; (2) increasing the number of staff to handle church growth; and (3) making a clear plan to pay off the mortgage on our building. He then took the time to help us determine a meaningful strategy for these three areas. This single conversation, along with the ongoing M2 relationship, has helped us map out major steps and milestones for the next 18 months. We believe this plan will help us to take significant ground as a church and ministry. We would love to support you in prayer. Share with us some areas we can pray along with you. Thank you! CA College’s 26th Graduation Ceremony started with a grand processional. Dressed in full academic regalia, Chancellor Rev Naomi Dowdy and ViceChancellor Rev Dominic Yeo led President Rev Dr Wilson Teo, the Board of Directors, faculty, and staff of TCA College into the hall. In the welcome address, Rev Naomi Dowdy reminded students of TCA College’s mission: to “…declare the power [of God] to the next generation…” (Psalm 71:18). Just as each faculty and staff member is committed to living out this mission, passing on their knowledge and experience to every student that studies in TCA College, students are called to do the same within their spheres of influence. In recognition of TCA College’s commitment, graduates Wong Wun Chee and Jin Dong Yu gave the Graduates’ Response in English and Chinese, respectively – expressing their appreciation toward the College for making an impact in their theological, spiritual, ministerial, and character formation. Faculty and staff members play an important role

in developing the next generation of theologicallytrained and spirit-led ministers. In recognition of this, we honoured Dr Joy Tsai, Dean of the School of Theology Chinese (SOTC), who will be retiring in June 2016. Dr Joy joined SOTC at its initiation in 1986. Under her leadership, SOTC is now a full-fledged school with accredited programs ranging from Certificate in Ministry to Master of Theology. SOTC also has extended its influence to include Mandarin-speaking students from China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, and Indonesia. Rev Dr Wilson Teo thanked Dr Joy for her contribution to the College, particularly SOTC, over the past two decades. In a video montage, students past and present testified of the remarkable and long-lasting influence Dr Joy had in their lives. Graduates, as you go forward into this new season of ministry, take inspiration from Dr Joy’s life and use every opportunity to “…declare the power of God to the next generation!”

Do you believe in magic? To celebrate Children’s Day, DiscoveryLand welcomed a special guest on October 10 and 11. Uncle Derrick, a Christian illusionist with a big heart for God, captivated the children with his quick hand and larger-than-life personality. The children were glued to their seats, watching his acts with amazement and laughing at his humorous stories. Some even became his assistants on stage! Through the performance, as well as the sharing of God’s Word by Pastors Mei Yee and Kah Fei, the children were reminded that no matter what, we are always precious in God’s eyes. A total of 92 First Time Visitors (FTVs) also shared in this time of games, gifts, and prizes. We also praise God for the 64 decisions made for Christ!

Saya Merdeka! I Am Free! August marks the month of Indonesiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s independence. Trinitarians from our Indonesian Ministry put together a special Care Event for their oikos to celebrate this meaningful occasion. By Jessie Chew

reparations for Saya Merdeka! â&#x20AC;&#x201C; held on August 16, 2015 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; happened weeks in advance. Each cell group was entrusted with two booths: one for food and one for games. Cell members came together, in Incredible Unity, to plan, prepare, and man their booths.

participants were treated to carnival-style games, entertainment (organized dances and karaoke), and home-cooked food. More than 190 people, 140 from the Indonesian ministry and 50 first-time visitors (FTVs), came for the festivities!

The sense of ownership for the event was high. Members spurred one another along in inviting their friends, neighbors, even random strangers, to the event!

After the carnival, everyone was ushered into Lecture Theater 1 for additional games as well as a message by Pastor Steven. Through on John 8:36, he exhorted that Jesus can set everyone free from the bonds of sin and shame. Through Saya Merdeka!, eight FTVs made decisions for Christ!

PULSE SAYA MERDEKA! I AM FREE!

Saya Merdeka! was the first event in the Indonesian Ministry where Spiritual Parents were fully in charge. Personally, it was the biggest event that I have ever organized. We set a target for 200 people to come. For Indonesian Ministry, this requires big faith! During our six weeks of preparation, we really sought God’s presence and intervention. As a ministry, we prayed and fasted for 40 days. We went SALTing in many locations and invited as many people as possible. Through our combined efforts, there were 288 contacts to follow up! On the day itself, some of us came as early as 7.30am to prepare. We even had three oikos come early and help us! Through Saya Merdeka! God really open our eyes to see the harvest; He answered our prayer for souls! The event also taught us to be united in everything we do, to love one another despite our differences. Indeed, God used every gift and talent in the Indonesian Ministry to glorify His name. Thank God for a successful event! - Anna (Spiritual Parent, Coordinator-in-Charge for Saya Merdeka!)

or the average Christian, the thought of devoting three full months to ministry training sounds like an impossible dream. For Trinity Christian Centre’s former Senior Pastor, Rev Naomi Dowdy, AlphaTrack was that dream. Her desire to give God’s people – Trinitarians and people from other churches and nations – a platform to take time out, become equipped, and serve God was finally realized on December 26, 1996 with an inaugural batch of seven. Now, 20 years, 45 batches, and over 500 AlphaTrackers later, the purpose of AlphaTrack remains steadfast: to help men and women discovery their destiny and purpose in Christ, to raise them as Harvest Warriors, and subsequently release each person into the “ministry” – both full-time and within the marketplace. Through the three-month AlphaTrack program, men and women in all seasons of life – students, graduates, those in mid-career, and retirees – learned to hear the voice of God, acquired ministry and leadership skills, discovered their passions and gifts, captured God’s heartbeat for the lost, and grew in boldness to testify of God’s goodness. Toward the end of the program, every AlphaTracker was given the opportunity to put what they learned to practice in an overseas evangelistic mission trip. “Since learning about Trinity’s missions efforts in 2009, I always had a desire to go and impact the nations,” shares Jessie Ng, corporate communications executive, 80

Batch 43. “However, the desire was never strong enough for me to take that next step and sign up for a missions trip. Through AlphaTrack, I finally went on a missions trip to the Philippines. The favor of God was with us and we had the privilege of sharing about the love of Jesus to thousands. My one desire for the trip was to be a channel for healing and God used me to bring sight to a man blinded by a cataract! I am blessed to have been a blessing and look forward to participating on another missions trip!” Eugene Cheng, CFO, Batch 38, shares a similar sentiment. “What amazes me is how a group of people, with very diverse backgrounds – a sophomore student in law school to a 60-year old lady – can perform wonders when they are committed to His purpose to help the lost. The most precious moment of my time in AlphaTrack happened when we were on our mission trip. I preached the gospel in a youth revival meeting in Iloilo, Philippines. After giving an altar call for salvation, I was amazed and overwhelmed by the number of young men and woman that rushed forward to give (or rededicate) their lives to Christ. The tears that flowed on their faces showed me how precious the gift of eternal life, and Jesus, was to them. That moment also reminded me of the need to always be alert for opportunities to share the gospel and to live a life of service the Lord in all forms and at all times.”

During the BIG AlphaTrack Reunion, bonds formed through the three-month program were remembered and AlphaTrackers encouraged one another by sharing how God was working in and through their lives. Pastor Dominic, founder of the AlphaTrack program, also shared a word of encouragement based on Philippians 3. “You are seared and special!” Pastor Dom exhorted, “You have been specially trained, developed, and equipped. Your experience in AlphaTrack is something very few have and a springboard for something greater! By committing three months to seeking God, you have found Him and His purpose for your life. Because you have experienced the power of God in and through your life, you can do great damage to the kingdom of Hell! Remember the passion that AlphaTrack ignited, re-fire that passion, and live to your fullest potential!” The BIG Alpha Track Reunion had an immediate effect on AlphaTrackers. Lily Koh, consultant, Batch 40, shared that, “On the first working day after the reunion, while travelling to Manila for work, I was seated beside a young Filipino lady on the plane. Though I needed time to prepare for work, God prompted me to talk to this lady, that the harvest was ready. We started talking and God gave me the opportunity to share the “bridge illustration.” She was ready and I had the privilege of leading her in the Salvation Prayer. Praise God for His faithfulness!” Indeed, “Once a Tracker, Always a Tracker!”

IGNYTE Ministry’s Combined Leadership Carecell

Transforming our World, One Prayer at a Time

Every month, IGNYTE youth leaders – Spiritual Parents, Associate Leaders, and Leaders – meet on a Friday evening to be refreshed (in spirit), refined (in skill ministry), and released (into the harvest field). Benjamin Voon reports how the meeting held on August 28, 2015 at Trinity@Paya Lebar made a significant impact in the lives of each leader.

P Empowerment is crucial in the lives of the IGNYTE youth leaders. It is a time when the IGNYTE Pastoral Staff bring the youth leaders to alignment with God’s vision and impart the skills necessary to bring about real life-change. For August, Pastor Gary shared about a topic very close to his heart: the importance of developing a culture of prayer in schools and campuses. Starting and maintaining a culture of prayer takes wisdom and grace. Pastor Gary shared the importance of seeking and gathering likeminded peers to come together in prayer. He also highlighted that there could be differences that arise because of denominational beliefs and practices. 83

PULSE TRANSFORMING OUR WORLD, ONE PRAYER GROUP AT A TIME

IGNYTE youth leaders were encouraged to partner with their brothers and sisters in Christ to bring revival into their schools/campuses. To show that all things are possible, Pastor Gary shared the experience of how he started a time of prayer during his secondary school days at the age of 14 that lead to a spiritual revival in his school. IGNYTErs, let’s continue to sow in prayer and see revival take place in our schools and campuses!

It all began when he [Pastor Gary] uttered a simple prayer to God, ‘I would like to see a revival in my school,’ Soon after that prayer, God spoke to him to quit Track and Field and join the Christian Fellowship group. When he turned up for the first meeting, it felt like a funeral: there was no zeal and hardly any sign of life. But things started to change as he gathered the group, as well as 11 youths from Trinity, for prayer. Rain or shine, they prayed for an entire year at the school’s basketball court. After some time, students from other churches started joining! There was a great hunger for God. More prayer groups sprouted around the school and almost every class had a prayer group. Canteens were empty as students devoted time to praying for their generation. The atmosphere of the school changed! Christians were determined to live their lives as a good testimony to their classmates. People wanted to know Jesus! Non-Christians were excited to come for chapel time. At the school Easter presentation, more than half of the students made decisions for Jesus. Lives were transformed, all because of one student’s obedience to prayer. MORNING “Start the day off right!” For some of us, that might mean a hearty breakfast or early morning exercise. For others, there’s nothing better than starting the day off with a dose of God’s presence. Each day of Morning Prayer saw an average attendance of 260 Trinitarians. On Deepavali, attendance almost doubled with 428 Trinitarians gathering in Theaterette 2! We ask some Trinitarians to share about their experience with Morning Prayer, held from November 9 to 13, 2015 from 7 to 8.30am. “I’ve never gone for any prayer meetings before but I felt a real need to go this time. Indeed, it is never too early to pray and starting the day with prayer as it is one of the most energizing and refreshing thing to do!” – Abigail Yeong, Student “It was difficult to wake up because I was still suffering from jetlag and had a lot of work to catch up on. However, I came because I wanted to honor God by being in His House to pray for Trinity and Trinitarians.” – Patrick Koh, COO

At Morning Prayer, God reminded me that I shouldn’t doubt His voice and just step out in faith!” – Odelia Tan, Student “I came because I wanted to encounter God and get back into the discipline of waking early to meet with Him. “Before Morning Prayer, God spoke to me to come back close to Him so that He could use me. I came to stir up a new hunger for God in my spirit. At Morning Prayer, God revealed His heart: how He’s calling me, and each of us, to a deeper and real relationship with Him.” – Tai Lik Xon, Business Developer “My day ends pretty late and coming for Morning Prayer meant that I had to wake up a lot earlier. But I really wanted to begin my day in God’s presence and God provided the perfect platform through Morning Prayer! During that time, God spoke to me about having more discipline, even choosing to wake up earlier to pray for my carecell, school, and church. Garden of Gethsemane When I was at the Garden of Gethsemane, I was deeply moved by Christ’s deep love for humanity. Even though He was in great agony and emotional pain, Jesus submitted His will to the will of God and died on the Cross for us to be saved. HERO Have you ever wanted to know more about the people leading worship during our Celebration Services each week? Discover what they do in Hannah Tan’s interview with members of the Trinity Christian Centre’s worship team – Creative Ministry (CM) and Ministry Expression (ME) Choir!

FIRST, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO OUR READERS. I’m Linda Ong. I serve as the co-leader, sectional leader, choir trainer, and special events coordinator in CM. I’m Patrick Lee. I serve as part of the ME Choir. I’m from South District! I’m Christal Joy Kuna. I serve as a drummer in CM. 92

I’m Kuan Tzyy Yee. I serve as an electric guitarist in CM.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SERVING IN CM/ ME CHOIR?

CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT ME CHOIR? WHO IS IN IT AND WHAT’S THE COMMITMENT LIKE?

Linda: Since 1984. Patrick: Ever since the ME Choir started around four years ago. Tzyy Yee: Since 2004. Christal: A little over four years. I started off in ME on percussion

Linda: T he ME Choir is filled with Trinitarians who love to sing and worship God through songs. T hey have option of serving once a month, on alternate weeks, or weekly.

WHY DO YOU SERVE GOD IN THE WORSHIP TEAM? Linda: When I first joined Trinity, I was very ministered by the worship and songs of ministry from the choir. Patrick: It’s something I’ve always wanted to do! I love to sing, and singing is an expression of my worship unto God. Christal: Prior to joining the adult worship service, I served as a drummer in the IGNYT E worship team. Once I got over my fears of inadequacy – for a while, I didn’t think I was “good enough” to be a worship musician – serving alongside the other musicians to worship God was a very special experience. I missed that a lot so when another opportunity arose for me to serve, I signed up!

Tzyy Yee: I joined because I could play the guitar; it seemed like a pretty natural choice! What keeps me in CM is the sense of fulfillment that comes from seeing God move and touch lives. WHAT WERE SOME SACRIFICES YOU HAVE TO MAKE IN ORDER TO SERVE IN THE WORSHIP TEAM? Linda: Setting aside time from my business in order to honor my commitment to the ministry. Patrick: Changing my habits based on the ME Choir schedule. For instance, if I’m serving at the 5pm Saturday service, I have to leave the house at 3.25pm to reach church for warm-up at 3.45pm. I generally do this by making sure not to commit in activities on Saturday morning/afternoon. Also,

when new songs are introduced, I set aside time to practice these songs on my own. Tzzy Yee: As a self-employed person, I occasionally turn down assignments that stretch into the weekends. Also, during major productions (e.g., Easter/Christmas evangelistic events), we are required to commit additional time – weeknights and weekends – for rehearsals. Christal: For the past few years, I’ve served the Sunday 8.30am service at Trinity@Adam. T his requires me to wake up at 5am on most Sundays – a big sacrifice of sleep if I work the night before (night shift ends around 10pm). T here’s no doubt that serving is physically tiring but I have a

conviction to serve. T hat attitude prepares my spirit each week and has helped me grow in my walk with God. DESPITE THE SACRIFICES, WHAT JOY DO YOU FIND IN BEING A PART OF THE WORSHIP TEAM? Linda: In the past, it was the opportunity to touch lives through the Celebration Services and evangelistic events. Now, I find joy in building the people in the family and imparting what I have learned through my years of serving. Patrick: Being able to spread the joy of the Lord to the congregation. I treasure being able to bring Vibrant Atmosphere into the Celebration Services!

Tzyy Yee: T he privilege of being used by God Most High! Christal: Being on stage to worship God, and lead His people into worship, is a tremendous honor! For me, being part of the team and being able to glorify God through music is the greatest joy in itself. LASTLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT JOINING THE WORSHIP TEAM? Linda: Serving God is a privilege. Serve Him with your talent and He will multiply it! Patrick: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always a joy to serve the Lord through ME Choir. Hallelujah!

Tzyy Yee: First, set the right expectations and perceptions about serving in CM/ME Choir. T here is nothing glamorous about it; many sacrifices are required. Moreover, serving in CM/ME Choir is like serving in other ME (e.g., Traffic Marshal, Celebration Host, DiscoveryLand, Nursery, Sound, RGB). No ME is more important than the other because we are all serving the King and His people! If you know that God has blessed you with musical talents and you want to use these talents for His glory, then CM/ME Choir is the place for you! Christal: Go for it!
