Nicholas Anastasopoulos is an architect, a researcher, activist and academic, with experiences which altogether compose a multi-faceted profile. As a practicing architect he had the privilege of working in a variety of environments both in New York and in Athens and through theory, practice and research he has honed a critical view about the role of architecture in the shaping of the world today and tomorrow. Research interests include sustainability, sustainable architecture and urban futures, manmade and natural environments, public space, alternative communities, ecocommunities and the commons. His ongoing concern for the environment and mankind's impact on nature, as well as his social understanding of architecture, have more recently led him to explore participatory methods, alternative and natural building materials, theories and practices, as well as involvement in various groups and actions defending biodiversity and ecosystems, and promoting human resilience and community building. As a teacher, he has a long experience of teaching in many top institutions and various areas of expertise both in the US and in Greece. He has a natural facility with young people, a passion for transmitting knowledge and an understanding that the best teaching framework is interactive in character. As citizen of the world, he possesses a natural curiosity for other cultures, an ethnographer’s method in approaching them and a compassion for other people. He is a sociable, highly esteemed by his peers and the communities he is a part of, a permaculturist, hiker, biker and yoga practitioner, he promotes and practices self-sufficiency and he is an advocate of local and community resilience. This portfolio contains selected material in an attempt to capture essential elements from a career which spans architectural practice, research and teaching, as well as intense involvement in educational and restorative activities for the environment and the community through various organizations.
