Our goal: The circular economy For Lexmark, sustainability and responsibility are core corporate values. That's why we provide sustainable solutions throughout our product lifecycle: from sustainable design to the long life of devices, efficient use of resources, and responsible recycling. Learn how you can reduce your impact on the environment with Lexmark's three-step approach.

Durable design

Years More than 7 years product lifecycle by design

Metal frames instead of plastic - for durability and the environment

Modern sensors for predictive services

Certified supply chains

Lexmark devices are deliberately designed for a long service - lasting at least seven years and replaced less frequently. This means we use minimal amounts of raw material and energy in the manufacturing and distribution of equipment, and also create less waste. We call this concept 'planned durability.' Planned obsolescence is not compatible with our understanding of sustainability.

Using sturdy metal frames instead of plastic in new generation devices helps us to ensure planned durability, long service life, quieter acoustics and robustness in all printing environments as well as the highest printing precision. Lexmark devices are thus much more robust than competitive devices made of plastic. And most importantly - they reduce plastic waste.

Every Lexmark device gathers over 100 different data points, evaluating and capturing environmental conditions along with highly detailed information about the device's internal operations. These advanced sensors alert you to everything from the need to replace the toner to a service requirement. This means potential failures are detected before they even occur. Troubleshooting is done remotely 70% of the time with Lexmark - that's industry-leading. As a result, on-site technician visits are reduced, saving fuel and money. AI powered calculations of remaining toner levels also avoid early or unnecessary refills.

Lexmark is the only printer manufacturer to date to meet the ISO 20243 standard and receive this certification, recognising our secure supply chains. This standard covers supply chain security from product development to manufacturing and distribution. This certification signals that Lexmark products stand for quality, safety and our environmental promise.

Efficient use

Over 130 Blue Angel certifications

Cloud services to optimise the balance between energy and infrastructure

Over 130 Lexmark devices are Blue Angel certified. This means they deliver high performance but with low energy consumption, low emissions and limited noise. Lexmark is a leading member of multiple CSR organisations and has received award recognition for our commitment to sustainability.

Lexmark Cloud Services not only optimise business processes, but will reduce paper consumption at the same time. Lexmark Cloud Print Management (CPM) offers energy savings by eliminating dedicated site-based print servers and using shared computing power in the cloud. We have found CPM can also reduce the number of pages printed by up to 30%.

Unison printing system ensuring energy savings

The Unison printing system not only maximises component life, but also saves time, costs, service interventions and energy thanks to its reliability and higher speed to first page. In addition, Unison is particularly energy-efficient as printing takes place at a lower temperature. Unison's innovative toner technology not only delivers real energy savings, but also more productive workflows.

Energy efficient design

Built-in power saving modes ensure devices meet EPEAT® Silver and Energy Star® Certified ratings. When in power saving mode, devices can save approximately 70% in energy. In addition, standard settings such as duplex printing, Eco Mode and Print Release can reduce paper and toner consumption and thus reduce a device's impact on the environment.

Sustainability initiatives

25+ years of Lexmark's Print Cartridge Collection Program

90% of the products contain up to 60% PCR plastic

Lexmark's recycling plant with R2 certification

Voice of the Recycling Industry™

2020 Design for Recycling® Award

For 25 years, the Lexmark Cartridge Collection Programme (LCCP) has provided a free and easy way for customers to return cartridges to Lexmark's recycling centres. Currently, 62 percent of all returned cartridges are reused to make new cartridges, making Lexmark an industry leader.

Lexmark offers the industry's largest range of printer models manufactured with a proportion of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics. Using innovative processes, recovered recycled plastic from empty toner cartridges is reprocessed and integrated into new parts. Currently, nearly 60 Lexmark consumable components contain up to 100% PCR plastic.

Lexmark's R2-certified recycling facility in Juarez, Mexico, provides a place to return empty print cartridges to be responsibly reused or recycled. R2 is the electronics industry's leading sustainable certification in standards for tracking and controlling the disposal of electronic equipment, and includes the safety of workers who handle such materials.

This annual award recognises manufacturers that have actively integrated Design for Recycling® principles into their products and production processes. Lexmark received the award specifically for the design of its toner cartridges, 95% of which contain post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics.
