ecently, the Income Tax- IT department has moved the Madras High Court against Academy award-winning music composer AR Rahman. The Income Tax department has alleged that AR Rahman had received an income of around Rs 3.47 Cr from the United Kingdom’s Libra mobiles in the assessment year of 2011-’12 and he had transferred Rs 3.47 Cr to a charitable trust- AR Rahman Foundation, managed by the music composer in order to evade paying the taxes. The counsel of Income tax dept said that the income for work has to be received in AR Rahman' individual account and it is taxable. After the deduction
of income tax, the money can be moved to the charitable trust. The IT department found discrepancies in AR Rahman’ tax filing for the fiscal year 2011-12. Thereafter, a division bench of Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice V Bhavani Subbaroyan issued a notice to the music composer and asked him to explain the charges leveled against him. In the month of February, Madras High Court had granted an interim stay on the order passed by the Commissioner of Goods and Services Tax and Central Excise asking AR Rahman to pay Rs 6.79 Cr as arrear and the additional penalty of Rs 6.79 Cr.
