“Audiences like their blues singers to be miserable.” — Janis Joplin

‘Magic of Christmas’ By Vicki L. Kroll Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer vkroll@toledofreepress.com

Jim Brickman’s sparkling piano playing is as synonymous with the season as softly falling snow. Listen to “The Magic of Christmas.” Released last month, the disc features Brickman’s fine key work on 14 new recordings of holiday favorites and includes two new songs penned by the pianist. Johnny Mathis, Megan Hilty and Sandi Patty are guest vocalists on the CD. “I wanted the whole album to feel beautiful and nostalgic and have a quality to it that was extremely unique and timeless,” Brickman said. “And when I thought about as guests who that would be, I thought when you’re talking about timeless and classic Christmas, I can’t think of anybody more perfect and beautiful than Johnny.” So began the quest. “I was pretty tenacious in my pursuit of [Mathis] singing on the album,” Brickman said and laughed. The iconic crooner performs the pianist’s 2003 original, “Sending You a Little Christmas.” In a rare recorded vocal, Brickman sings “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” “I was going after the nostalgia, and I felt like the tone of what I did with that [song] fit with everything else,” he said. “Although I tease about the fact that it’s probably the only time you’ll ever hear Jim Brickman and Johnny Mathis singing on the same album.” The Cleveland native is bestknown for hits while collaborating with other artists: Martina McBride on “Valentine,” Collin Raye on “Peace” and “The Gift,” Rebecca

Lynn Howard for “Simple Things,” Jane Krakowski on “You” and Lady Antebellum for “Never Alone.” During a call before a show in Bloomington, Ill., the musician talked about being on the road for his 18th holiday tour. “It’s become a tradition to gather not only in a community way to celebrate the antidote of the chaos of the holiday season, which is what I think this is. But also there’s a special quality which is why I call it ‘The Magic of Christmas.’ It’s a really special couple hours; it’s beautiful, but it’s also lighthearted. It’s very honest and it’s very authentic. We are who we are,” he said. “And because [singer] Anne Cochran is there with me, and we have such an organic history of going to high school together and performing for our whole lives together, the audiences come to know there’s a very familial quality to [the show].” Brickman will bring “The Magic of Christmas” to Stranahan Theater at 3 p.m. Dec. 22. Tickets are $28-$48. Taking the stage with the pianist will be electric violinist Tracy Silverman and guitarist Luke McMaster. “If you’re playing music in the background of something, I don’t care if you’re having a baby in the hospital or you use my music for trimming the tree, there has to be moments of silence as much as there has to be moments of sound,” Brickman said. “It gives people a chance to take it in, to breathe a little bit. “And I don’t want it to be intrusive; I just want it to be beautiful. It’s made for the backdrop to moments.” Fans can see Brickman at a meetand-greet from 11 a.m. to noon Dec. 22 at Barnes & Noble, 1430 Secor Road. He and McMaster will play songs, field questions and sign autographs. O

Toledo-based blues-rock band Buck69 recently released an album offering 16 tracks of original material. “No Medicine Like the Blues” is the second album from the seven-piece contemporary bluesrock outfit that formed in 2004. Lead vocalist, and songwriter/ guitarist Tom Clawson said TOM CLAWSON taking the time to write quality songs was key for the second offering. “I started writing new material even before we finished the first CD, so you could say this one took about six years,” Clawson said. “We really took our time with this, compared to the first one. We wanted the first CD to be good, but we rushed it a little due to the excitement. I’m really pleased with the outcome. I feel it’s the best songwriting I’ve done, and the band did a great job of putting down the music.” Buck69’s previous release, “When She Whispers Your Name,” was a 2008 Grammy Award finalist for contemporary blues. The group also contributed a song, “Have a Mighty Fine Christmas,” to the recent MakeA-Wish Foundation benefit CD “Hol-

iday Wishes 3: If You Believe.” Clawson, a longtime musician, was on an extended break from the business when his son, Alex, suggested that they play together in 2002. “The two of us [played] around Toledo doing some acoustic stuff,” Clawson said. “I was only too happy to try it out, if not mainly just to spend time with my son. After a couple years he says, ‘Dad, let’s start a band.’ I was a little hesitant, knowing the baggage that comes with forming and maintaining a band.” But the elder Clawson agreed, and the two set out to handpick Buck69’s lineup. Clawson said it was critical to form a true team of professional musicians and singer/songwriters. The band is a well-rounded lineup of some of Toledo’s most recognizable names in music. Alex plays rhythm and lead guitar, and John Sevilla plays lead and bass guitar. Candice Coleman, a former “American Idol” contestant, sings lead and backup vocals. David Alan plays drums and provides backup vocals, B.J. Love plays keyboards and Randy Paredes plays lead, rhythm and slide guitar. “Each of us [brings] a diverse mixed bag of talent to the band. That’s why you’ll never see us listed as ‘Tom and Buck69,’ or ‘Candice and Buck69,’ or any of the other guys’ names. When you come to see us play or listen to our CDs, you’re not getting one person with some musicians backing him up, you’re

getting seven multitalented people coming together as a team who all could be the frontman/woman of their own band.” Clawson said that, due to the size of the band, it is difficult to play weekly gigs at local bars, so they try to stick to fairs, festivals and fundraisers. Buck69 has played at the Ohio State Fair, the Toledo Speedway Jam, the MS Jam, the Fort Wayne Jazz and Blues Festival and several other festivals. “I’ve found that doing the ‘every week bar thing’ burns out the fans and the musicians,” Clawson said. “Besides, I like the energy that the band brings to a show, and I know some of that would be lost playing cover songs over and over again at the bars. It’s just not what the band is about.” Clawson admitted that “No Medicine Like the Blues,” which was recorded and produced by Sevilla’s New Realm Recording, provided some challenges in trying to organize and arrange music for a large group of songwriters. “Of course, raising the money is always the hardest part, [but] the next hardest thing was writing some of the songs. I wanted to have Candice be lead singer on a couple of the songs, so I had to write accordingly, and she does a great job on ‘Without My Baby,’ which I knew she would. And John Sevilla wrote the music for four songs, and said, ‘Here, write some lyrics.’ That was a totally new experience.”

“The blues and jazz will live forever.” — Jack Nicholson n BUCK69 CONTINUED FROM 4 Clawson said that if he had to choose a favorite song from the album, it would likely be the title track, a progressive rock-influenced blues jam featuring a lead guitar part reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, with a bluesy edge. “It’s not the best radiofriendly song on the CD because it’s eight minutes long, but it really shows the professionalism of the guys in the band,” he said. “[Also], Candice took ‘Without My Baby’ and made it her own, and it was a real treat to have Johnny Neel from the Allman Brothers Band play keyboards on ‘Dead End Road.’” Clawson said keeping things fresh and unique is what helps set Buck69 apart. “At my age now, I’ve listened to a lot of music and my biggest gripe has always been that you put a CD in while cruising down the road, and it really sucks when all the songs start sounding alike. That’s why people listen to the radio and why mixed CDs are so popular — the diversity.

”Whose idea was it to make ‘The Hobbit’ into three films? Most of this movie is unneeded. During a summer taping of a New Year’s Eve special, holiday inspiration struck. Michael S. Miller, Toledo Free Press editor in chief and executive producer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation benefit CD “Holiday Wishes 3: If You Believe,” was serving as emcee for a Johnny Knorr Orchestra television special when he first heard Joel Zmuda sing. “He sang a Bobby Darin song, and even though it was summer, all I could think about was asking him to record Darin’s ‘Christmas Auld Lang Syne’ for the CD,” Miller said. “His voice and phrasing were perfect for the song. I caught up with him as the band was clearing the stage and asked.” Singer and musician Zmuda had never heard the song before Miller asked him to sing it for the CD. “The version he asked me to take a look at was Bobby Darin’s with the symphony orchestra and choir,” Zmuda said. “I decided I would try that with my own style. I wrote an arrangement. ... I performed it and produced it and did all the work on it and it’s all me.”

Zmuda, a big-band singer, created two versions of the song, trying to get as close as possible to the original recording. It took a couple of weeks in the studio to get just the right sound, he said. “I always wonder what people think [of the recording] because you need a sounding board,” said Zmuda, who asked his friends to listen to the finished product. “They were shocked that I was doing that. They thought it turned out really great.” Zmuda, who sings for 17-piece big bands, said he hopes his talents on the CD will bring people together. “It’s all about family,” he said. “We’re doing this as a way for family and the community to join in together. It just seems really positive and brings everyone together.” “Christmas Auld Lang Syne” is an emotional song that should resonate and connect with listeners and help them through good and bad times, Zmuda said. “Hopefully [listeners] can find the heart of it all, and it helps them through whatever times they have,” he said. Zmuda said he has a smooth voice and calls himself the “Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra and Harry Connick Jr.” of the local area, where he sings with

ZMUDA the Monroe Big Band and others. He learned to play the keyboards before preschool and was playing drums by age 10. Later, he joined several bands. “I’ve played in a number of groups around town since the ’80s,” the automotive engineer said. “I have a smoother sounding voice and learned to adapt how I sing into that style of [big-band] music. I do like jazz, too.” Zmuda said he believes everyone has talents and abilities, and he tries to use his to promote music. He is also involved in a Toledo School for the Arts fundraiser. “It’s very humbling to use your talents to help someone,” he said. The CD is available at several locations at Levis Commons and the gift shop at ProMedica Flower Hospital. O

Grateful that Toledo gives back

t’s no surprise to you that the holidays are upon us. We’ve tried to do our part on “The Morning Rush” to remind everyone of what is most important during this time … giving back. For phe last 28 years we’ve done our Toy-A-Thon, where we collect new, unwrapped toys and cash for the Salvation Army. On Dec. 7, we collected more than 2,200 toys and an unofficial amount of money. Sid While I was broadcasting from the Franklin Park Mall, I saw a large number of parents taking the opportunity to explain to their children what we were doing. Some of the children got it … some did not. One thing it did do to me was make me thankful that there are parents out there still teaching this important lesson. I grew up in a very modest home. I had two older brothers and an older sister. My father had a decent job, and my mom worked as a waitress. I can easily say that we did not have the finer things in life. I always had clothes on my back (albeit hand-me-downs), food in my stomach and a roof over my head. Even though I thought I had it hard, my parents did a good job teaching me that others had it worse. It’s that lesson that I, as a father, am trying to pass on to my kids.

I spoke with a woman who had volunteered her children to help take toys from people and stack them during our Toya-thon. Her children were 11, 10 and 9. When I went over to meet them, I learned that when they heard their mom had signed them up to help with our ToyA-Thon, they weren’t happy. They were mad their mom had taken one of their days off from school and made them stack toys that they were never going to get. But I watched them. I saw all three of them take toys from people and put them on the table. I watched them speak to other little kids and other volunteers. I actually noticed something amazing: I saw them get it. I saw the actual moment they understood exactly what was happening, and it was great. I went over to meet their mom and tell her how impressed I was that she took the time to teach her kids about giving back. Even though her kids didn’t have every electronic gadget on the market, the best shoes or nicest clothes, their mom taught them that some kids don’t have anything. Some kids don’t even get one toy for Christmas. But ... because they took time out on their day off from school, some less-fortunate kids are going to get something for Christmas. As far as I’m concerned, that’s one of the greatest gifts we as parents can give to our kids.

PROOF

‘‘

I am proud of you, Toledo. Every year you go out of your way and give to others who don’t have anything ... you make sure your kids see you do that, and for that I am grateful.

’’

I saw their mom well up with pride, and rightfully so! She should be proud to pass on one of the most important lessons we can teach our children. Like it or not, we live in a world where bad things happen and no one can offer an explanation as to why. We see things on the news that make us question the good in people. If you think your kids don’t see that as well, you’re wrong. Do them and the rest of the world a favor. Take some time out of your day and teach them how to give back. You may be surprised by how unbelievable it feels. I am proud of you, Toledo. Every year you go out of your way and give to others who don’t have anything. I see you stand in line with your kids, fight the crowds and drop off a gift. You make sure your kids see you do that, and for that I am grateful. Thank you!
