“Live,” a new disc by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., opens with the couple singing Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” The couple knows something about that. “In the industry that we work in, for us to be married for 44 years, it just knocks me out because in our industry, marriages don’t stay together that long,” Davis said. “In the world!” McCoo added and laughed. During a phone call from their Los Angeles home, the singers reminisced about meeting in 1965 when their group The 5th Dimension formed. “The thing that was special between the two of us was that we both had a passion for music, and that was very clear to us early,” McCoo said. “That was an immediate connection.” “I think that’s one of the main things that started our friendship, too, is that we knew we had that in common,” Davis said. “But as far as falling in love, no, we had no idea that was in the cards,” McCoo said and laughed. “In fact, we didn’t fall in love right away; it became a strong friendship,” Davis said. “The love bug hit a little later.” Thanks to “Up, Up and Away” and “Stoned Soul Picnic,” the group was soaring when it released a landmark album in 1969. “When we got ready to record our fourth album, ‘The Age of Aquarius,’ our producer Bones Howe brought [‘Wedding Bell Blues’] to us and thought it would be fun for me to sing it because Billy and I were going together,” McCoo recalled. Penned by Laura Nyro, the infectious upbeat plea hit No. 1 in 1969, a few months after McCoo and Davis said “I do.” “It’s a fun song and a tribute to our relationship,” McCoo said. “We never thought of

it as being a single.” “Then it took off, which was a real blessing for us. We still enjoy performing it today,” Davis said. In 1975, the two left the group and one year later won a Grammy for “You Don’t Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show).” They won six Grammys with The 5th Dimension, which was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002. Released last month, “Live” features the couple in concert performing The 5th Dimension’s hits, including “One Less Bell to Answer,” as well as covering Alicia Keys, Lady Antebellum and The Beatles. “We try to remain true to the music, like the harmonies that we sang with The 5th Dimension years ago. When we sing those songs, we want the presentation to be as close to what [fans] remember and what we enjoyed so much about doing it the first time,” McCoo said. “And also true to the arrangement because we have the music and the arrangements, and we want to be true to that because that’s what people enjoy so much, and that’s what we enjoy so much,” Davis added. McCoo and Davis will let the sun and the spirit of the season shine when they perform at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Ritz Theatre in Tiffin. Tickets are $20-$40. “We always do [the hits] and then part of our show is going to be a celebration of the holidays, of Christmas music. We’ve been working on material for that, we’re very excited about it. It’s something that we haven’t done,” McCoo said. The stars plan to align in California for the holidays. “We’re just hoping that we can be with the family,” Davis said. “We’ll just be finishing up this brief Christmas tour that we’re doing, and we’ll be ready to get home and celebrate at somebody else’s house,” McCoo said and laughed. “Bah! Humbug!” — Charles Dickens

Meadow Brook Theatre offers 32nd year of ‘A Christmas Carol’ By Matt Liasse Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com

For 32 years, the Meadow Brook Theatre in Rochester, Mich., has performed “A Christmas Carol” annually. Director Jerry Carpenter said the cast never grows tired of it. Carpenter was first introduced to the story with 1962’s “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” an animated musical adaptation with Mr. Magoo. He fell in love with the story right away. “That’s 50 years old now, I think, and I still like the songs from that version,” Carpenter said. Rehearsals for “A Christmas Carol” started before Halloween. By Dec. 1, the cast had done 22 shows. Carpenter said it’s not difficult to get into the holiday spirit in October. “Actually, if you go to the Walmart store, they’ve got their Christmas stuff out before Labor Day these days,” Carpenter said. “It’s Christmas for about three months.” Each show is different, based on the audience, Carpenter said. The many casts the production has seen over the years keep it fresh as well. Casting the role of Ebenezer Scrooge is always a challenge. “You have to find somebody who can be both the hard Scrooge at the beginning but yet you still feel sympathy for as the audience,” Carpenter said. “And he needs to be able to transform, as Scrooge does, to the open, loving, joyful, as he says ‘giddy as a drunken man’ after he’s woken up

on Christmas morning.” Carpenter said he always has to find an actor who has the stamina to keep up with the demands of playing Scrooge. “They’re on stage the entire time,” Carpenter said. “And standing up virtually the entire time.” This season, the role of Scrooge is played by Thomas D. Mahard, a member of the Actors’ Equity Association. Mahard has played Scrooge for the past four years and has filled other roles in the production in the past, including Ghost of Jacob Marley, Old Joe and one of the charity men. He was even the understudy for Scrooge for many years. “He’s been in the show almost from the beginning,” Carpenter said. “We also know that he knew the history of our version of ‘Christmas Carol’ because he had done it so often and played different roles from different perspectives.” Even though the production has been going for so long, Carpenter said he doesn’t sway too far from the original script, which was adapted by Charles Nolte from the Charles Dickens story. “The audience likes the version that we do,” he said. The show will run 8 p.m. Dec. 6, 11-13 and 17-20 and 2 and 6:30 p.m. Dec. 7-8, 14-15 and 21-22. Tickets range from $35 to $40. Carpenter said the show may be too scary for children younger than 5. Meadow Brook Theatre, located on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., is a nonprofit organization serving for 48 years. For more information, visit the website www.mbtheatre.com. O

Youth orchestra plans holiday concerts In November, Yang Kun Song led the Toledo International Youth Orchestra (TIYO) in an inaugural concert. The show at the Westgate Chapel, 2500 Wilford Drive, consisted of 45 teenagers from Northwest Ohio, southeast Michigan, eastern Indiana and an exchange student from Spain. The members range from grade six to 12. “The best way for me to give back to the community is to help others, so I start[ed] this orchestra with no charge; I never charge anything … we’re a nonprofit organization right now,” Song said. TIYO was founded by Song, a native of Beijing, China, who studied at the Beijing Conservatory of Music in 1976. He later became assistant principal cellist of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, according to a news release. In 1988, Song came to Toledo, studying at the University of Toledo and graduating cum laude in 1993. He now maintains a private studio in the area for student instruction of all string instruments. He is a music educator for Toledo Public Schools. “It started when I wanted to teach my daughter traditional Chinese music,” Song said in the release. “Other children in the neighborhood asked if they could play also and of course I said yes.” Just as his daughter was taught the music of her heritage, TIYO represents more than 20 nationalities either directly or through immigrant

Next evolution JUPMODE debuts T-shirt truck. By Danielle Stanton TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR STAFF WRITER star@toledofreepress.com

Local T-shirt mogul John Amato has found a way to do better in Toledo. Amato, owner of T-shirt company JUPMODE, is now selling his, “You will do better in Toledo” shirt and his other popular Toledo pride T-shirts out of a multicolored truck he just bought two months ago. The Perrysburg native said he plans to park the 24-foot-long truck at fairs, festivals and Downtown art walks to sell his wares and spread the “love” of Toledo. “It’s a really creative and unique idea,” Amato said at his company headquarters in Perrysburg. “The whole purpose is to generate excitement, to spread love and Toledo pride, to share in the nostalgia of Toledo. “People really are proud of Toledo because it’s a shared history and culture.” Most of Amato’s business is wholesale and online and he hopes the truck will attract more customers who want his Toledo pride T-shirts, hoodies, drink koozies and stickers.

“You will do better in Toledo” and “We’re strong for Toledo” are Amato’s most popular shirts. He also sells shirts featuring the Tony Packo’s logo and two styles featuring the Buckeye Beer logo — which are so new they aren’t on the website yet — plus Lion Store, Tiedtke’s and Toledo Troopers shirts. “Toledo was a great city and it still is,” Amato said. “There’s a lot more happening in Toledo than people give it credit for and I just want to be a part of the movement.” His shirt “Someone in Toledo loves me” is highly popular with out-of-towners, he said. He fills orders regularly from Chicago and Columbus and has sold shirts as far away as Hawaii. JUPMODE — which stands for “Jupiter” and the word “mode,” meaning fashion in French — is one of the premier Toledo pride T-shirt sellers in the city. The company has been in business for seven years, two at its current location in a strip mall in Perrysburg. Amato got his start when he created a “sweater vest” T-shirt based on the style of Jim Tressel, former head coach of The Ohio State University football team, who wore sweater vests while he coached. n T-shirts CONTINUES ON 7

“Christmas is a poor excuse every 25th of December to pick a man’s pockets.” — Charles Dickens n T-SHIRTS CONTINUED FROM 6 With that success, Amato expanded into University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University shirts and also became licensed in Michigan. His biggest customers are families, schools and businesses that buy wholesale. After a friend recently spotted a T-shirt truck in Chicago and after observing the success of food trucks, Amato decided to go for it. He found his truck on Craigslist and added a window for customer purchases. Maumeebased CGS Imaging did the vinyl wrap. The truck became fully operational the day before Thanksgiving. Amato parked it at The Shops at Fallen Timbers for Thanksgiving weekend and plans to be there every weekend in December. “We think it’s a unique idea that has a wide application,” he said, adding that if the truck idea fails, he’ll at least have a new delivery truck.

More Toledo pride

Another Toledo pride T-shirt vendor, Max Reddish of Reddish Printing, said his goal is to not only promote his company but also to promote the city. He sells his wares every Saturday at the Erie Street Market, at festivals like the Old West End, at various street fairs and online at reddishprinting.com. “My goal is to be at events so that the shirts draw people to the events,” Reddish said. “Selling T-shirts is obviously a goal; I want to make money but [another important] goal is to get people out enjoying Toledo. “It’s mutual promotion,” he said. “I promote

Toledo and Toledo promotes my business.” Reddish’s screen-printing company, located on the East Side, prints his flagship logo “Boring people hate Toledo.” He also prints “Wholly Toledo,” “Proud Toledoan” and simply “I like Toledo.” He has seven or eight Toledo pride designs, he said. Reddish’s Toledo pride runs deep: He grew up in Toledo, lives in Toledo and earns a living in Toledo. “I’m a Toledoan who makes shirts for Toledoans,” he said. Tim Marshall and his wife Becky run Glass Wear, a company that celebrates their love of Toledo. Their Toledo pride T-shirts can be found at street fairs, the Arts Commission’s Art Walks, online at glasswear419.com and most recently at Handmade Toledo’s Maker’s Mart, where they sold 162 shirts — half of what they normally sell each month, Marshall said. For every shirt they sell, they donate 13.6 pounds of food to help fight hunger in Toledo as part of Glass Wear’s partnership with local nonprofit Food for Thought. Glass Wear even has a T-shirt, “This shirt provided 13.6 pounds of food to a Toledo family in need.” Marshall said it’s not a top seller but people do buy it. Glass Wear started donating a portion of each sale to Food for Thought in July. They have averaged 900-1,000 pounds of food donated through their T-shirt sales per month but donated almost 4,500 pounds just in the month of November, Marshall said. n T-SHIRTS CONTINUES ON 8

8 n DEC. 8, 2013 / TOLEDOFREEPRESS.COM n T-SHIRTS CONTINUED FROM 7 “We do it because we believe in Toledo and we want to give back,” Marshall said. “It’s not just a feel-good thing, it’s something we really believe in.” Glass Wear is gearing up for the holiday season. On Black Friday, sales weren’t that great with about six orders as people shopped the mall instead, Marshall said. On Black Friday weekend, Marshall did double the usual giving, donating 27.2 pounds of food per T-shirt sold. On Cyber Monday, they gave a 10 percent discount. “We don’t really run a lot of sales because we give so much,” he said. Glass Wear’s most popular T-shirt, the “Home” shirt with the shape of Ohio as the O, ships out of state every day and has been delivered to at least 40 states, including California, Florida and New York, Marshall said. “It’s just insane,” he said about the out-of-state popularity. The first eight T-shirts listed on his website are new designs, including the “Longitude and Latitude” shirt, the “Love Box” and the “419 Skull and Bones.” “We try to roll out new designs every quarter and keep it fresh,” he said. “Last quarter, we did eight new designs.” Marshall conducts a lot of his business via social media, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. He also provides a delivery service in which he meets customers at local coffee shops, eliminating shipping costs. In one week, he delivered shirts to 15 people, he said. “We want people to love the city as much as we do,” Marshall said. “If you don’t like it, fix it. ... Let’s be a part of the process that makes it better.” O

Estar Cohen Project reimagines ‘River’ By Kevin Moore

TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR STAFF WRITER star@toledofreepress.com

Estar Cohen is a vocalist, composer and jazz musician studying jazz music performance at the University of Toledo. While most of her work centers on jazz, Cohen likes to explore new songs and make them her own by creating different arrangements. Cohen and her band, The Estar Cohen Project, reimagined “River” by Joni Mitchell for the Make-A-Wish Foundation benefit CD, “Holiday Wishes 3.” “I followed the call for artists in the Toledo Free Press, and when I thought about a song for this holiday CD, I didn’t want something that was obviously a Christmas carol. Joni Mitchell’s song ‘River’ is my mother’s favorite song. It’s a great song, and I loved having an opportunity to arrange it in an original way,” Cohen said. Christopher Stoll, an engineer with Audioflare Recording Studio who produced many of the tracks on the past two “Holiday Wishes” CDs, recorded the band’s live performance of “River” for this year’s CD. “As a jazz group, we do so much improvisation that we have to do everything live,” Cohen said. “Stoll made working in the studio really comfortable for us.” This marks Cohen’s first time working on a charity CD. ESTAR COHEN PROJECT wanted to lend her talents. “I think this is a very creative way for local musicians to help raise money for a great organization,” she said. Cohen believes the lyrics of “River” will resonate with listeners. “Mitchell’s words have a depth; that’s why I chose it,” she said. “I hope everyone will get to experience it in their own way.” The CD is a two-disc set with 45 tracks that retails for $10. Brad Holler, owner of The Black Pearl, opened a second restaurant, The Memphis Pearl, on Nov. 15. The menu features “Memphis-style” dishes, like short ribs, spare ribs and pulled pork, in addition to the steaks and seafood patrons enjoy at The Black Pearl, Holler said. Among some of the venue’s more unique dishes are barbecued spaghetti and meatballs and Cajun catfish bites. Happy hour is 3-6 p.m. daily. A lounge area, where Holler plans to feature entertainment, has “a Memphis vibe” and a large banquet hall that can seat up to 150 people and three private dining rooms will be available soon, he said. eing the host of a morning show, one of the questions I get asked a lot is how we come up with the topics we discuss. Some of it is based on the things I overhear in public, but the majority of the ideas come from what happens in my everyday life. One of those everyday moments happened to me recently. When we’re growing up, we’re taught to chase the American Dream. That is, basically, to get a job, get married, have kids and live happily ever after. I have no problem with getting a good job or getting married with kids. It’s the “happily ever after” part that I’m having a conflict with. I have reached every aspect of the so-called American Dream. I have a good job, three kids and a beautiful wife. Yet I find myself asking, “When is Sid the happily ever after part going to start?” Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not saying I’m unhappy. I’m rather happy. What I am saying is that “happily ever after” isn’t something that’s automatic. We’re basically promised in the American Dream that all we have to do is achieve the aforementioned goals and happiness will be bestowed upon us. Well, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that’s nonsense. The truth is, your happily ever after only comes when you work for it, after getting what you worked so hard to get. Think about this for a second. To get a good job, you probably went to college and put in a lot of work. You worked your way up from the bottom and finally landed the job. Counting kindergarten, we’re talking 17 years of schooling and three or four years of working to get to the right spot in your chosen profession. That’s 21 years of work getting one part of your American Dream. For your significant other, you undoubtedly put in time learning how to be comfortable with yourself and dating multiple people before finally

settling down. Starting at your average age of dating (15), and ending at the average age to get married (28), that’s 13 years of work. For your 2.5 kids, well, for some of us it takes longer than others. Without getting into a debate, let’s say they are five years of work. Congratulations. You’ve accomplished all there is in life. You’ll now be happy for the rest of your life. What makes you think that after all the work you put in to get that job, the husband or wife, and those beautiful kids that you’re done? The “work” hasn’t even set in. This is the beginning. I really believe that this is one of the biggest problems plaguing us as a society. We tend to think that if we work hard to get something we want, once we get it, we don’t have to work hard anymore. No. This is why the things you’ve worked so hard to get haven’t lasted. We need to start teaching our kids — and ourselves — that we need to work even harder once we get what we want out of life. We need to continue to impress our boss by coming up with unique ideas. We need to show that without us, they’re lost. We need to be desired by our significant other. We need to impress them by showing them how much we need them. We need to constantly show that we love them. We need to be as excited to see our kids as we were the first time we saw them. We need to show them the love and patience we promised we’d show them when they were first born. Once people start to realize that a goal isn’t accomplished just because you achieved it and it’s something that needs to be pursued forever, we’ll be better people. We’ll have jobs we don’t lose to outsourcing, spouses who don’t leave for lack of attention and kids who grow up knowing that we love them more than life itself. Isn’t that the American Dream? O

Kelly
