LIGHTING THE FUSE

A very good year T F

here are a great many ways to measure a year: personal relationships, professional success, community impact. By any of those standards, we have a lot to be thankful for as we look back on 2012. 2012 saw Toledo Free Press receive its fourth consecutive honor as best weekly newspaper in Ohio from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. But the thing we are perhaps most proud of is the increasing number of philanthropic projects we have been able to sponsor. Some of these events are original and just beginning what should be very long legacies. To name just a few, there is the “Holiday Wishes” series of local music CDs benefiting Make-A-Wish. There is the explosive growth of Restaurant Week Toledo, our partnership with Leadership Toledo. We are humbled to be the media partner for the summer Round Up Hunger campaign for Feed Lucas County Children and the American Red Cross Ready U series. We enjoyed a tremendous night for the Red Cross with our Titanic re-creation dinner and dance on the 100th anniversary of the ship’s April 14 sinking. We were also pleased to assist the first Thomas F. Pounds Ghoulwill Ball for Goodwill Industries, Ken Leslie’s 1Matters and Tent City and the latest Cattle Baron’s Ball for the American Cancer Society. We have been pleased to work with Toledo’s LGBT community for the Toledo Pride Festival and parade, and to have served three years as media sponsor for the Holiday with Heart Charity Gayla. We also sponsored the Jennifer Rockwood-directed play “8” at the University of Toledo, which centered around marriage equality. On the business scene, we saw another successful year as a media sponsor for the Better Business Bureau Torch Awards and the Entrepreneurial & Business Excellence Hall of Fame. On the arts side, we helped with such projects as Grugelfest, the PechaKucha series, 2445 events at the Toledo Museum of Art, the Sur-Saint Clair exhibit of the works of Robert Heindel and the upcoming New Year’s Eve concert by the Johnny Knorr Orchestra. We also had one of the best nights of the year at the Schedel Gardens gala. There were many others, each of which we were proud to be associated with, including Multiple Sclerosis Society (Leadership Class), Junior Achievement, the Owens Community College Foundation (Backpack to the Future and the Alumni Golf Outing) and the ProMedica Advocacy Fund. At this year’s Holiday with Heart event, Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller commented that our partnership with the Gayla was not about Toledo Free Press accepting the gay community; it was about the gay community accepting Toledo Free Press. That sentiment carries through each and every one of our partnerships. Our philanthropic efforts are never about our choosing a cause; they are about the honor of these causes choosing us. Toledo Free Press looks forward to another full slate of events and philanthropy in 2013. O

Yes, Kacee Mae, there is a Santa Claus!

his is the time of the year when parents across the world talk about Santa Claus’ famed Naughty or Nice List. This book carries the names of those boys and girls who have been either really good or, like some in my home, naughty. Because of various connections I have acquired, I have obtained a copy of this year’s Naughty or Nice List from a North Pole insider. Some of the highlights: Nice: President Barack Obama for his re-election and “Obamacare,” which was upheld by the

Nice: Mayor Michael Bell for his charitable work and one-on-one conversational abilities. Although I feel the China trips were misguided, Mayor Bell’s love of our city is not. I have witnessed him make a 12-year old-boy feel like the biggest person in the room with a simple conversation. Bell does this every day. Agree or disagree with his politics, we all can agree he represents Toledoans perfectly. Naughty: Chick-fil-A’s Chief Operating Officer Dan Cathy for his anti-gay marriage comments earlier

in 2012, which spurred a Chick-fil-A customer appreciation day and record sales. Nice: Local Chick-fil-A owner and operator Michael Herrick for handling the controversy with class and dignity. As a former employee of Mr. Herrick’s, I know this man’s heart, as I worked side-by side with gay employees. The two new standalone Chick-fil-A restaurants make Northwest Ohio residents’ days a little better. n BAUMHOWER CONTINUES ON A5

Naughty and nice: Toledo City Council’s Christmas list

D

ue to a postal mix-up, I have been receiving letters originally directed to another overweight guy with a white beard. Unlike “Miracle of 34th Street,” these deliveries do not, however, constitute irrefutable proof that I’m the one, the only … well, you know. I did receive a pleasant note from the real big guy though, after forwarding these efforts on to him. (We often visit near year’s end to compare diet goals and white beard grooming tricks). He said that if any of them seemed amusing, I had permission to use them. I have been looking at a stack of letters I purposely set aside — Santa letters sent by and on behalf of members of Toledo’s government. A membership to Toastmasters was on a list for Councilman Phil Copeland. Evidently an improvement in public speaking skills is seen not only as a gift to Mr. Copeland’s future in politics as Lucas County Recorder, where he will have to speak for an entire agency, but also a gift in time and translation for the local media and his co-workers, no matter what capacity he serves in. Speaking of enhancements, there were requests for Santa to bring Councilman Steve Steel a gift certificate for self-defense lessons. I guess many still feel that if he’s going to insist on fighting outside of his weight class, giving him the gift of some martial arts techniques (maybe even ninja skills) might come in handy. There was likewise no shock over requests for adding the book “Basic Debate, Student Edition” to his stocking. Speaking of books and stockings, there were letters to put a special copy of the Toledo City Charter in Councilman Tyrone Riley’s fireplace-hung footwear. It would be special because

Santa would ensure that areas regarding conflict of interest and abstaining in a vote of council were highlighted.

Tom Waniewski

that Councilwoman Webb has been, at best, substantially compliant. Young Councilman Adam Martinez is also someone who has multiple item requests to Santa. The first is for a really good day planner under his tree. Having missed several Council meetings in 2012 after missing 19 in 2011, I guess he or someone on his behalf figured a better way of tracking his schedule might be of benefit.

There were a number of requests for a gift for Tom Waniewski as well. Santa has been asked to deliver a few more people with math skills and common sense to join him on Council. Apparently the hope in such a gift is to slow down the juggernaut Tim HIGGINS George Sarantou of regulation, taxation and funding allocation that seems to Councilman George Sarantou is be running rampant through Council asking for one of those Charles Atlas these days. The word I heard from the to the North Pole to ask why she had North Pole is that you have to be re- been sent the cloak in the first place, ally nice to get such a special gift, and and if it might be possible for Santa

to take it back without holding it against her. There are rumors (and I’m not saying about who) that certain members of Council sent letters to Santa on her behalf, as they were unwilling to share the limited limelight of Council meetings with her. The letters for Councilman Rob Ludeman were rather unique. He has been on City Council for a long time and was even president for a while, but Mr. Ludeman has seemed inconsistent over the years, sometimes seeming like a Republican and sometimes like a Democrat. This voting record seems to have left the Councilman (much like the local Republican Party that endorses him) stuck on the political Island of Misfit Toys from “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Unlike “Survivor,” this made-for-TV island is one he wouldn’t mind some help from Santa in being voted off.

Mike Craig

I looked for a letter to Santa mentioning Councilman Mike Craig, but couldn’t find one. Apparently when you are a former civil servant and now a public servant who has a strong family and union background, including service as a UAW union steward, there’s nothing that Santa can bring you that unions and the Lucas County Democratic Party can’t. There were rumors that Mr. Craig writes no letters because he found out that the elves refused to organize, but I haven’t been able to confirm that locally or at the North Pole. Santa seems to have found only one request for City Council’s President Joe McNamara in the letters he’s received. While Mr. McNamara’s young political career seems as well-favored as anyone’s, he may be suffering from comparisons to

another local Democratic politician of youthful appearance and legal training who once put his political stamp on Toledo. By now most of you realize that Mr. McNamara might in fact be suffering from “Konop Regional Antipathy Problems.” As it did for the original victim and long-time carrier, this condition can doom even the best political efforts of a candidate, no matter how well-intentioned the ideas or wellconnected the family. Santa tells me that regardless of being on the Nice list (after all, he’s not an evil Republican), there may be problems even Santa can’t fix with a box and a bow. Last, but not least, Mayor Mike Bell didn’t have a lot on his list this year, but there have been a couple of requests on his behalf to get the Ghostbusters in town to service One Government Center. Like Ebenezer in “A Christmas Carol,” the mayor may have been recently haunted by the spirits of former mayors Jack Ford and Carty Finkbeiner (both now asking Santa to put Mr. Ford in Phil Copeland’s soonto-be-vacant Council seat). These efforts are not so much hauntings, as attempted demonic possessions. There’s now concern that the fiscally conservative practices from early in Mr. Bell’s term have been taken over by the spendthrift “three-card monte” spending that his predecessors were famous for. I’m told that such things may be beyond even the ability of Santa, but that he’s at least trying to arrange a visit by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis for the pilot for their new reality show, “Celebrity Exorcism.” O Tim Higgins blogs at justblowingsmoke. blogspot.com.

Opinion

DECEMBER 23, 2012 n BAUMHOWER CONTINUED FROM A4 Naughty: Lucas County GOP Chairman Jon Stainbrook for failing to get highly qualified candidate George Sarantou — or anybody else — elected in the November elections. It appears Santa may still get Jon “Rock Band 3” to help nudge him toward a better career path. Nice: Any teacher who goes above and beyond to make a difference in a child’s life. Although it’s their job, the far-reaching impact of their compassion and commitment will make a difference for decades to come in Northwest Ohio. Naughty: Any adult male who chooses to wear meggings (male leggings) or Crocs. Although Santa can bring many things, a clue isn’t one of them. Nice: The person who invented yoga pants for women and those who choose to wear them. (Thank you.) Naughty: My own 9-year-old daughter Kacee, for spreading a nasty rumor among the fourth grade at her Sylvania elementary school. Fellow parent and Toledo Free Press writer Shannon Szyperski has confirmed that indeed it was my own flesh and blood, spreading “the truth” about St. Nick to the boys and girls in her class and others.

To those of you children who were affected by Kacee’s blatant misinformation, let me say this. Yes, Kacee Mae, there is a Santa Claus! However, you must believe to receive. Time is running out for you to make things right. (Editor’s Note: WSPD morning host Fred LeFebvre reads Ogden Nash’s cautionary tale about children who doubt Santa’s existence and spread that story, “The Boy Who Laughed at Santa Claus,” on this year’s Make-A-Wish benefit CD, “Holiday Wishes 2.”) Nice: Everyone who donated $1 or more to the Hayes family, read a word I penned, maybe even shared it with a friend on Facebook, or went out of their way to say “hello” and share a compliment or comment. Santa has assured me that you are all on the nice list ... and from the bottom of my heart, thank you! From my crazy family to yours, allow me to quote the great Clark W. Griswold, “May You all have the hap-hap,-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny ****ing Kaye.” Peace and Love. O

Profile of Excellence: Chelsey McMillan Owens Community College Alumna

Chelsey McMillan was selected as the Owens Community College class representative and addressed the graduates during the 32nd Fall Commencement Ceremony. McMillan is a graduate from the Registered Nursing Program. She transferred to Owens in January 2011 after working toward a nursing degree at another college. “Right away at Owens, I noticed a supportive environment. I felt like the faculty wanted to see you succeed,” said McMillan. In addition to the honor of being selected to represent her class as Student Speaker, McMillan earned a 4.0 GPA at Owens and runs marathons in her personal time. “If it wasn’t for Owens, I wouldn’t be becoming a registered nurse. Owens did so much more than give me a degree, they gave me a chance to do what I love,” said McMillan. She just completed her clinical rotation at Toledo Hospital in the Obstetrics ward. “Tears filled my eyes witnessing the moment when a baby girl was born and placed on her mother’s chest and compassion filled my heart when I held a sick

patient’s hand. An overwhelming desire burns within every fiber of my body to become a registered nurse,” said McMillan. According to her instructors, she is a student who always goes above and beyond in her studies, has a positive attitude and is outstanding in patient care. She credits her success to the support and love of her family, as well as her boyfriend, Drew, and his family. She would like to thank the nursing faculty for their support, especially Julie Lohse, who was her constant cheerleader. One of McMillan’s favorite quotes is “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Her speech addressed the challenges she and the other graduates encountered on their own personal journeys. After graduation, McMillan would like to work as an Obstetrics nurse and plans on pursuing her bachelor’s degree and eventually would like to become a Certified Nurse Midwife or a Nurse Practitioner.

Toledo Free Press asked several Toledo residents if they would open their homes to share their Christmas trees and decorations. From politicians to media celebrities to collectors, here are some of the scenes we found.

Pete and Polly Gerken

Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken and his wife Polly have been burned by live Christmas trees in the past. This year, they took a risk and decided to try a live one once more. “Last time we had a live tree in our last home, we had just redone the hardwood floors and I decided I was going to do something really cool and put the tree in a pot instead of a tree stand, like this giant clay pot, and it was just beautiful,” Polly said. However, when she took down the tree, “The clay pot had wicked into my newly redone hardwood floors and warped and blistered the floors. So this year I’m keeping my eye on it, but it’s in a proper tree stand,” she said. Although they’ve celebrated three Christmases in their current home, it is the first year they’ve had a tree.

“So with this big tall ceiling, I said, ‘If I’m getting a tree, it’s gotta be a giant tree,” Polly said. The resulting tree towers at more than 10 feet. The commissioner bought it when his wife was out of town in New York. “That’s faith in decision making. She was 600 miles away and said, ‘Go get one.’ So I did,” Pete said. The tree is decorated with a string of lights that change color and ornaments that include several snowmen, presents and handmade items. Polly, who plans to make Italian beef to serve on Christmas Eve, also made an outdoor Christmas tree for the birds. With the family getting older, Christmas traditions are changing, Pete said. “Our tradition on Christmas may be sleeping in and a movie,” he said. “Whatever that year presents to our family we do. It takes some of the pressure off.” One sure thing is the commissioner making his famous Chex Mix recipe, which he only does between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. “It’s the original Chex Mix out of the box and I add my own touches with Worcestershire sauce and some spices,” he said. Polly added, “People beg for it.” “I texted [a picture of Pete creating the mix] to our daughters the morning he was making it and they were like, ‘Yeah!’” O

Rick Kramer said his Old West End home’s tree is trimmed with decorations that reflect the interests of him and his family.

Rick Kramer

Old West End resident Rick Kramer’s tree is full of trinkets and treasures that reflect his interests and those of his family. The live 8-foot-tall tree features a string of popcorn, reminiscent of Kramer’s parents. “My mom and dad came over many years ago and they brought over their hot-air popper and we popped popcorn and we all strung it with dental floss,” he said. There’s also a bird in a nest ornament. “My dad gave me this. He said, ‘You always

have to have a bird in a nest for good luck,’ so I keep it there every year,” said Kramer, who organizes Old West End events like the Glitter & Glo Christmas light competition. Atop Kramer’s tree sits a choirboy ornament that his sister bought him because he was in choir as a kid. In addition to traditional Christmas ball ornaments, “Looney Tunes” and “The Wizard of Oz” characters are represented. Kramer’s tree wasn’t always so put together. “When I first moved out of the (parents’) house, I was so poor. So all my buddies, all

year long, we saved beer tabs in a big shoe box and we got together and we hooked them all together and that was the first thing we hung up on the tree. As you see, we’ve progressed a little,” he said with a laugh. Kramer, who has lived in the Old West End for about 30 years, used to host a candlelit Christmas Eve dinner for his family at his home. At age 4, his youngest niece wanted to help, so Kramer gave her a special task. “I gave her the [dinner] bell and she opens the pocket doors and says, ‘Dinner is served,’” Kramer

said. “Oh, she looked forward to that every year.” Now his family has outgrown the space and his niece is 15. But the family will still gather to celebrate, he said. Having Christmas in an old house like his own adds something to the holidays, Kramer also said. He remembered his own sister being mesmerized by the setting and his tree. “I caught my sister one year laying under the tree. She said, ‘Get down here! Now squint your eyes and look at the lights.’ Just like we did as kids,” Kramer said. ” O

Tara Outten is only 25, but she’s already nearly two decades into a collection of Marilyn Monroe, Barbie and “Gone with the Wind” ornaments, displayed on a Christmas tree in her Old West End apartment. Outten — who fittingly grew up in Monroe, Mich. — is especially enamored with Marilyn. “I’m a little bit of a fan,” Outten said, gesturing at the décor in her apartment, including framed posters, photos, a life-size cardboard cutout and more. “I started collecting long before I moved out [of my parents’ house] and then when I moved out it was like, ‘Oh, I have lots of space.’ And now I don’t have any.” Outten’s ornament collection started in 1993, when her mother gave her a Barbie ornament for Christmas. Outten was named after Tara Plantation, Scarlett O’Hara’s home in “Gone with the Wind.” Her middle name, Belle, also comes from a character in “Gone with the Wind.” Her mother started Outten’s collection of “Gone with the Wind” ornaments, giving her the first one for Christmas in 1997. Her favorite is of leading man Rhett Butler with his and O’Hara’s daughter, Bonnie Blue. Her stepfather started Outten’s Marilyn Monroe ornament collection,

also in 1997. Her first — featuring Monroe in the pink gown she wears while singing “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” in the film “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” — is still her favorite. “He got me my first Marilyn ornament, which was my beautiful pink one from ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ and then after that he started getting them for me every year,” Outten said. Outten still gets a new ornament for each collection every year from her mother and stepfather, always early so they can be displayed on that year’s tree. Outten’s tree also features ornaments made by local glass artists and ceramic candy canes she made herself.

Outten, who majored in ceramics at the University of Toledo and works at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) as lead sales associate in the museum store, was thrilled to learn TMA would be hosting “Made in Hollywood,” an exhibit of golden-era Hollywood portraits, including Monroe’s. The exhibit runs through Jan. 20. “When I found out ‘Made in Hollywood’ was going to happen at the museum, I probably was the most excited person ever,” Outten said. Although it’s quickly filling her apartment, Outten’s collection makes birthday and Christmas shopping easy. “If you don’t know what to get me, just get me Marilyn,” she said. O

Jane Petitjean

Artist Jane Petitjean hasn’t seen many outdoor menorahs like her own. And she definitely hasn’t seen any that are decorated with flamingos like hers is. “I hope [outdoor menorahs become] a trend that people will follow suit with, and maybe even become a little competitive,” she said with a laugh. The flamingos are a symbol of historic preservation, a common theme in the Old West End where Petitjean lives. “I really enjoy the flamingo imagery,” she said, adding she used to have a flamingo image on her business cards. Last year was Petitjean’s first attempt at an outdoor menorah. Made with wood and duct tape, “It was kind of flimsy. It was a nice menorah, turned some heads, but this year I decided I needed to make something that was a little more sturdy, a little more aesthetically pleasing.” Through online research, she learned of people making menorahs with PVC pipes and followed suit. She also spray painted hers. Petitjean grew up in Michigan and received her bachelor’s degree in fine art from the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. “[Art’s] definitely a profession for me and I’ve utilized every aspect of my creativity in every job I’ve ever held from being a graphic designer to when I used to work in displays for Lazarus department stores,” Petitjean said. She recently released a book, “The Artist’s Haggadah,” which she wrote and illustrated. It is available at www.janepetitjean.com/ buythebook.html. The artist has lived in the Old West End for 11 years. For Hanukkah, there are a few traditions she enjoys. “You have your traditional lighting of the menorah, but I think probably the most fun for us is when we get together as a family and we fry latkes, potato pancakes, and we play dreidel and gather around the table. There’s a lot of laughing and a lot of fun,” she said. O

WTOL-11 news anchor Chrys Peterson with husband Tom Runnells and daughter Riley Runnells at home in Sylvania.

Chrys Peterson

Chrys Peterson loves decorating her home from top to bottom for Christmas. The WTOL-11 news anchor has seven trees throughout her Sylvania home and the house is also decorated with her collection of more than 120 Santa Claus figurines. “I love my house at Christmastime because it’s so cheery,” Peterson said. “There’s something in every nook and cranny and I love that. I love to see a little bit of Christmas everywhere.” Peterson has been collecting Santa figurines for 22 years. She has some from as far away as Poland, Russia and Hawaii, and each one is unique. “I started with one and just kept adding. I probably get one or two a

year. They’re from all over the place and they are just special,” Peterson said. “It’s just because I like Santa. If you think of the kindest person in the world, I think that’s Santa. That’s my criteria for collecting. It has to have a kind face. “Santa is kindness, faith and the spirit of giving with a sprinkle of playfulness,” Peterson said. “Santa gives to all of us expecting nothing in return — except maybe a cookie or two.” Peterson’s husband, Tom Runnells, made most of the ornaments on the family’s main tree. The ornaments are made of foam, wood and paper. The family picks out their tree from the Whitehouse Christmas Tree Farm every year. Christmas morning is spent at

home with their daughter, Riley Runnells, 12. They usually open presents, watch a movie and have a spaghetti dinner, Peterson said. “We started having spaghetti a few years ago so I can do it early and don’t have to be cooking ham or turkey all day. I found I was spending the whole day cooking and I didn’t like that,” Peterson said, laughing. Having children around really brings home the spirit of Christmas, Peterson said. “When you have children it’s really easy to have the Christmas spirit because you’re trying to make it special for them,” she said. “When you have kids it’s special, it’s hopeful and you just see all the promise of the year ahead.” O

Richard St. Jean

Hollywood Casino Toledo general manager Richard St. Jean and his wife, Claudia, go all out to make sure their three sons — Richi, 13, Aiden, 8, and Ashton, 5 — feel the magic of Christmas. “The best part is just watching the kids,” said St. Jean, who has been known to dress like Santa Claus, including fake belly and face-painted eyebrows. “It’s that belief. That magic of Christmas and Santa Claus and the kids’ anticipation.” “And Jesus’ birthday,” Aiden said, after whispering to his mom that he had something to add. The family is spending their first Christmas at their new home in Maumee. The property includes a hill perfect for sledding — if only there were snow, St. Jean said. The Fraser fir in their front room features mainly decorative bulbs. There are also ornaments from each child’s first Christmas, from their travels — and, yes, even a few casino-themed adornments, including one shaped like a fanned five-card poker hand. On Christmas Eve, Claudia cooks the traditional German meal of Sauerbraten und Knödel, or pork and dumplings. Afterward, they open presents. “We do the traditional Christmas Eve because I’m German and Czech and that’s how I was brought up,” Claudia said. “Then Santa comes and brings one package in the morning for the boys.” O

Treece family

Running a family business means Dock Treece of Sylvania and his sons Dock David and Ben spend a lot of time working together. Christmas is a chance for them to spend time relaxing together. “With a family business, we’re always living our business day to day and the fact that we get a chance to spend time with each other and just celebrate the holidays is nice and relaxing,” Ben said. Dock is president of Treece Investment Advisory Corp. and his sons are partners. They also write a regular financial column for Toledo Free Press. When the boys were younger, the family opened presents on Christmas morning. Now they celebrate on Christmas Eve with cocktails and hors

d’oeuvres and then spend Christmas Day relaxing as a family, which includes four rescue dogs: Maggie, Molly, Murphy and Olivia. “We all get busy enough that it’s nice to just be able to separate everything else,” Dock David said. Dock David’s hors d’oeuvre of choice is bacon-wrapped water chestnuts while Ben’s favorite are Bagel Bites. Dock and his wife, Cynthia, are grateful their sons live nearby. “It’s nice because so many families have their kids scattered everywhere,” Dock said. “We’re lucky.” “But they weren’t always here, so we do appreciate they are now,” Cynthia added. “It’s a time for us to reflect on the past year and think about our goals for next year. Christmas is family time.” O

Tom Waniewski

This is the first year in several that Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski of District 5 purchased a real tree. “I’ve always had a series of smaller artificial trees for the last seven years, so this year I decided to go back to real,” he said. “So I went with a buddy of mine and cut it down like men do.” He favors simplicity when it comes to decorating his tree. “Every year, I try to do something different, but really it’s a simple approach. I don’t like to put too many ornaments on. A friend came over and said, ‘When are you gonna put the ornaments on?’ I said, ‘The ornaments are on.’” Waniewski said his artificial trees were getting stale before this year. “It was starting to lack spontaneity. To me, a tree is, ‘What do you feel this year? What are you doing this year?’” he said. His tree, which has a nativity scene in front of it, is decorated pri-

— Tom Waniewski marily in red and white in honor of Poland. His Christmas traditions also honor his heritage. “[The family members] try to get together, again around this Polish motif. My brother has this big Polish meal,” he said. “We always did everything around food — my aunt’s coffee cake … my mom’s pierogi, my brother’s kielbasa, so it’s been around food.” O

It’s plain to see that Ray and Betty Heitger’s Christmas tree belongs to musicians — and grandparents. Ray is the leader of the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band, which recently celebrated its 45th anniversary. He and Betty are also grandparents to nine children, ranging from age 3 to 15. “Most of what we’ve got on [the tree] are things our kids did when they were small if we still have them or [things from the] grandchildren,” Betty said. Each grandchild has a Christmas ornament with his or her name on it. There is also a pickle ornament, a nod to the Cakewalkin’ Jass Band’s long tenure playing at Tony Packo’s. Instrument-shaped ornaments also deck the tree. Ray estimates that about half his family is musical. His daughter is a member of his band and his son plays trumpet in New Orleans. “When they were real little, we had a family band,” said Ray, who recently retired from his job as a math teacher. “But they kicked me out because I was so terrible,” Betty quipped. The couple has four children and will spend the holidays with them and their grandchildren. “For over 40 some years, I’ve always had Christmas Eve [at our house], which always includes prime rib and homemade raviolis,” Betty said. But in recent years, her children have started hosting. Still, Betty assured that the ravioli is already in the freezer. The family may also go to a Chinese restaurant during the Holiday “to follow the ‘Christmas Story’ tradition,” Betty said. O

Szyperski family

Ornaments featuring children’s handprints and school photos are among the adornments on Toledo Free Press columnist Shannon Szyperski’s Christmas tree. The Sylvania mother’s family — husband Mike and children Jack, 9, Elaine, 7, and Lucy, 3 — is the focus of her regular columns, which cover anecdotes about life and parenting. “The ornaments are just a collection that range from when my husband and I were little all the way until this year,” Shannon said. “The kids have made a lot of them at school. Our nieces and nephews made some. When we go on vacation we always get an ornament. It’s just a mishmash of everything over the years.” The tree goes up two days after Thanksgiving. Shannon goes shopping on Black Friday and then puts up the tree on Saturday. Her favorite ornaments are five glass bulbs shaped like snowmen heads, one

for each family member, each wearing a different colored hat. She got them at a local craft show. There are also ornaments commemorating the couple’s wedding and each child’s birth. The family has had an “Elf on the Shelf ” for about four years. “Every year he makes his first appearance in the tree right after Thanksgiving,” Shannon said. “Ours got married this year so he has a wife now.” The family celebrates with one side of the family on Christmas Eve and the other side on Christmas Day, but are always home together on Christmas morning. “Christmas morning when the kids come down, that’s my favorite part,” Shannon said. “They usually get us up at 5 o’clock in the morning, but it’s just our most relaxed morning of the year. That’s my favorite thing. “Mainly we just try to get in as many Christmas activities as we can get in at this crazy time of the year. Hopefully there will be snow.” O

Muddy THE mudhen and spike at the toledo club.

Decorated with Swamp Shop souvenirs and game-day snacks and topped with a foam finger, the Mud Hens and Walleye tree in the Toledo Club’s annual Holiday Parade of Trees fundraiser was the inspiration of local artist Jan M. Thomas. “I wanted the tree to represent the experience of attending a Mud Hens/Walleye game, so I focused on using garland and large ornaments in the teams’ colors and hung bags of peanuts, popcorn balls, baseballs and hockey pucks along with lots of fun team souvenirs from the Swamp Shop,” Thomas wrote in an email to Toledo Free Press. “Red balls boinging out of the tree are reminiscent of balls being hit out of the park or fireworks at the end of a game.” The local teams have participated in the fundraiser for several years, said Cheri Pastula, manager of community

relations for the Toledo Mud Hens and Toledo Walleye. “We combine both sports into one tree and just try to have a lot of fun,” Pastula said. Proceeds from each tree are split between the Toledo Club and a charity of the organization’s choice. Half the proceeds from the Mud Hen/Walleye tree will go to the Helping Hens Charitable Fund and Walleye Wishing Well Charitable Fund. Giving back to the community is important to both teams, Pastula said. Earlier this month, the Walleye hosted the annual Teddy Bear Toss, in which fans throw teddy bears onto the ice after the first Toledo score. The stuffed animals are then donated to Lucas County Children Services. The mascots and some of the Walleye players also recently rang bells for Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. O
