L
ife doesn’t stop for anybody, and neither does news, nor the industry that covers it. Things are changing at Toledo Free Press, and while that change may initially seem unnerving, it will ultimately be a chance to reflect, refresh and reinvigorate our publication. After 10 years at the helm, our first and to this point only Editor in Chief is moving on. Michael S. Miller will provide details next week; my job is to introduce our new Editor in Chief, Sarah Ottney. It was great timing that Sarah was named one of Toledo’s 20 Under 40 leaders on Sept. 30. She is a serious journalist with the enthusiasm for Toledo, heart for philanthropy and mind for news that has characterized Toledo Free Press for 10 years. Born in Toledo, Ottney graduated as saluThomas F. Pounds tatorian of Oak Harbor High School and majored in English and journalism at Ohio Wesleyan University. She served as editor of Ohio Wesleyan’s weekly student newspaper and interned at New York City book publisher Soho Press. Ottney worked at the daily South Dakota newspaper Aberdeen American News for three years as a reporter and copy editor. She moved back to Ohio for a year of AmeriCorps VISTA service in Toledo with the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks. Miller hired her at Toledo Free Press in 2010 as a staff writer. She was promoted to Special Sections Editor in 2011 and currently serves as Managing Editor. You have read her work as she reported for Toledo Free Press on assignments from New York City, Washington, D.C., and Germany. Her awards — in addition to 20 Under 40 — include 2014 Public Children Services Association of Ohio Journalist of the Year. She was also recently honored for Best Arts Profile (2013), Special Section (2013) and Newsmaker Profile (2014) by the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, competing against writers from the state’s daily newspapers. She is a graduate of Leadership Toledo’s Class of 2014 and currently serves as volunteer advisory board member for Toledo Streets newspaper. She has previously volunteered with 1Matters, Food for Thought and Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s Read for Literacy. Miller has told me, “The tough job isn’t replacing me; Sarah has that covered. The tough part for Sarah will be replacing Sarah.” We are working on that. n OTTNEY CONTINUED FROM 3 Cleveland’s Ohio City — recently pegged by USA Today as an up-andcoming neighborhood — is known for its food and breweries. In 2011 it was named as one of the world’s best bar hopping destinations, listed alongside places like Dublin, Brooklyn and Portland. Many young people I talked to said they moved back “to be part of the renaissance.” They saw something happening they didn’t want to miss out on. “Cleveland’s like the Brooklyn of the Midwest. There’s an artisan hipster kind of renaissance,” said Mandi Kotynski, marketing coordinator for several Ohio City breweries, including Nano Brew Cleveland, an experimental single-barrel brew house that features a new beer each week. “With lots of breweries [in Ohio City], you’d think it’d be competition, but there’s a sense of community and working together to build Cleveland up.” Nick VanDemark, 27, of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission said he’s amazed at the changes in the four years since he moved back to Northeast Ohio. “People will hate it until they are here. Then they love it,” VanDemark said. “Two years ago, even the locals would be negative about Cleveland. Now they are proud and trying to get you to come here. It’s like, ‘Make your joke. You don’t know what you’re talking about.’” Biking is also a big part of the new
Cleveland. A privately funded bikeshare pilot program launched earlier this month through Zagster with 34 bikes in six locations in Ohio City. The bikes are accessed for a hourly rate via a free app, which supplies a code to unlock a bike. Cleveland’s initiative is the company’s first fully public rental system. Ray’s Indoor Bike Park was jawdropping. It’s 140,000 square feet of ramps, trails and foam pits constructed inside an old factory building, remodeled each season to keep things fresh. Another innovative idea is Merwin’s Wharf, a restaurant owned, operated and staffed by Cleveland Metroparks employees with all proceeds benefiting the Metroparks. A special brew, Fat Head’s Brewery’s Trail Head Pale Ale, is sold throughout the region to fund upkeep on the trails. The restaurant, which opened this summer overlooking the river, was bustling during our visit. Cleveland’s Metroparks, known as the Emerald Necklace, includes 18 park reservations spanning nearly 23,000 acres, including eight golf courses and a zoo. It drew 16 million visitors last year. Nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park features the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, running year-round between Independence and Akron. The railroad offers a discount for bicyclists and well as craft beer and wine rides and a “Polar Express” ride for kids each winter.

Toronto-based “adventure blogger” Red Hunt of Red Hunt Travel enjoyed Cleveland’s “community vibe.” “Whether it was bike co-ops or programs through Cleveland Metroparks, there was a feel-good, educational vibe to enjoying and exploring the great out-
doors in the city,” he said. Denver-based travel blogger Carri Wilbanks of Catch Carri came away with the impression Cleveland was “a city on the rise.” “I am so impressed by a collaborative effort to create community,” she said.
The city hosted the Gay Games this summer — Paris will host the next one — and was selected to host the Republican National Convention in 2016. Plus, “King James” is back and Johnny Manziel’s in town. “I feel like everything’s ramping up,” said Erin Fox, 27, who grew up in Northeast Ohio and works in social media for CBS Radio in Cleveland. “You need infrastructure for events like that. We’re a big city that used to be huge, so we have all those pieces. We just need to freshen them up. All the pieces are in place and we’re running on all cylinders.” I don’t know how our Positively Cleveland hosts arranged for the absolutely perfect fall weather — leaves just starting to turn, birds chirping, sun shining amid the whir of pedals, the occasional squeal of a brake pedal and the soft wooden clatter of boardwalks under the tires — that lasted all weekend, but I know I’ll think back on it fondly as we move into winter. Six months after fatal fishing trip, families have few answers to what happened on lake By Amanda Tindall

At about 2 p.m. April 16, a group of close friends — practically family — left the shores of Lake Erie to begin a fishing trip. Within about four hours, they had caught their limit and started back. None were seen alive again. About all that’s known for sure is Bryan Huff, 31, Amy Santus, 33, Andrew Rose, 33, and Paige Widmer, 16, spent their last hours doing something they all loved: fishing. At 4 p.m., Myranda Gerity texted her cousin Paige and they had a short conversation about what they were doing. At 4:30 p.m., Andy’s boss at Home Slice Pizza in Toledo called him to say he wouldn’t be needed at work that night. Around 6 p.m., the group had caught their maximum allotted number of fish and posted a video of the final catch.
At 6:15 p.m., Bryan called his father to say the group was on its way back. At 6:30 p.m., Andy’s friend Ben DeWit called about dinner plans they’d made. Andy said he’d gone fishing and would probably be late. DeWit was the last person to speak with anyone on the boat. By 9 p.m., family members began to worry and started calling around. The boat was reported overdue at 2 a.m. April 17 and by 3 a.m. the Coast Guard began a search that, for some families, would last weeks. Shortly after 6:30 a.m., the boat, a 21-foot Tracker Tundra, was found empty, sitting bow up but with minimal damage, according to an investigation report from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The search continued throughout the day as family members gathered at Turtle Point Marina in Oak Harbor, waiting for any word about their loved ones. Around 11 a.m., the bodies of Paige and Amy were recovered. Both
women were wearing life jackets; Paige’s was unzipped. It would be almost three more weeks before Bryan’s body was discovered; two days after that, Andy’s body was found.

After 22 days of waiting, Michele Rose planned her son’s funeral around the theme “Gone Fishing.” Approximately 200 people gathered ROSE to eat the fish and venison Andy had saved in his freezers. “Everything came full circle,” Michele wrote to Toledo Free Press. As a child, sandy-haired, blueeyed Andy would waddle down to the nearest pond to fish with his babysitters. As he grew up, he dreamed of

being a game warden. Even as a young boy, he had the patience to pursue fishing all the time, his mother said. “Every once in a while he had a trip that was so special that kept him wanting to go back again and again and again, for the rest of his life,” Michele said. “He was hooked, even when the fish weren’t.” After graduating from Maumee High School, Rose went to college for a bit but decided not to continue and went into modeling instead. He was good-looking and always had women interested in him, DeWit said. “He had his modeling days where he was a model down in Miami and all of that,” DeWit said. “He’d tell me all the stories of all the things he did. ‘I hung out with Pharrell and we went out on his boat.’ And he’d hang out with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. ‘I got picked up from the hotel in a Bentley that was waiting for me.’ Then he’d show all the pictures to back it up.”
But after struggling to maintain a steady income in modeling, Michele said, Andy decided to come home to Ohio. He began working as an interior home remodeler, combining skills learned from his mother, an interior decorator, and his grandfather, a carpenter and tradesman. One of his projects was featured in a Better Homes and Gardens issue on kitchens and baths. DeWit met Andy when they worked together at Don Pablo’s after Andy’s return to Ohio. DeWit said Andy was his best friend and godfather to his 6-year-old son, Kamden. The pair liked to go wakeboarding and skiing on DeWit’s boat. “He was a great guy,” DeWit said. “I have two children. He’d come and take them out to do things. My kids loved and adored him, and they’d drop what they were doing and jump into his arms when he came in the door.” n MYSTERY CONTINUES ON 7

pursuit of health and balance; he worked out regularly.” Matt Brown, Andy’s boss at Home Slice Pizza, said Andy was a people person who was always going on to the next adventure. “It just came as such a shock,” Brown said. “With Andy, he took care of his body, he liked being outdoors. He was always out with his dog or doing something active. “The biggest thing about Andy was that he had a thirst for life. He was al-
ways doing something. He was always looking to help.” Brown had told Andy he might need someone to cover a shift April 16, but called around 4 p.m. to let him know he didn’t need to come in. “He said, ‘Well, that’s great because I’m out fishing, so I wouldn’t have been able to make it in,’” Brown said. DeWit said about every other Wednesday, he and Andy would get sushi from Spicy Tuna in Holland. They had talked about meeting there April 16.

“He wasn’t responding to my texts,” DeWit said. “It was just very odd for him.” “Hey, what time,” DeWit texted. “?” He sent in the next text. Still no response. DeWit called, and Andy answered his phone. “Hey, sorry man,” he told DeWit. “I ended up going fishing last minute. I’m going to be late. I can hit you up when I get back.” DeWit said it wasn’t a problem, that he could do something else. That would be the last time anyone heard from Andy, Bryan, Amy or Paige. Both DeWit and Michele said the waiting process was difficult. “It was just never-ending agony,” DeWit said. “It was scary [wondering] if we were going to find him, when we were going to find him. It wasn’t the normal grieving process. It was so challenging for his mother.” DeWit said pockets of Andy’s friends would have dinners and gettogethers while they waited for news. Many of them still keep in touch with

Bryan Huff was also a fisherman from a young age. His father, Ralph “Butch” Huff, would take him out fishing. It was what they both loved to do, he said. “He would say, ‘Dad, can I fillet it?’ And I said, ‘No, the knife’s too sharp,’” Butch said. “So I took him to the fair and he was maybe 4 or 5 years old and he caught some goldfish. The next morning, I woke up and my wife said, ‘You gotta get down here and see this.’ I go downstairs and he’s at the kitchen table. n MYSTERY CONTINUED FROM 7 Bryan’s sister Kimberly Hawkins said their father taught Bryan a tremendous amount about hunting and fishing. “Bryan dedicated his life to the outdoors since he was a very young child,” Hawkins wrote in an email to Toledo Free Press. “My dad showed him the ropes and guided him through many fishing and hunting trips and experiences, which built my brother to be the amazing outdoorsman he was. It was more than a passion to him.” Bryan was known to be an experienced boater. “That was the hardest part,” Huff said. “He was very experienced out there.” Hawkins said she and Bryan bonded through his passion for boating and her work at Tracker Marine Boat Center at Bass Pro Shops. Bryan would call, text or stop into the shop weekly, if not daily, to talk about boating products. “It usually would start as a prank of him calling my work phone and changing his voice, and I would fall for it every time,” Hawkins said. “That is exactly the person he was. Always joking around and playing pranks, which I truly, 100 percent, believe he picked up from our father. He was the master of pranks. And he had the best poker face you’ve ever seen to back

them up. He could impersonate voices to disguise his own just to get a laugh.” Hawkins said her brother played a big role in her wedding as her husband Ron’s best man. “They shared an everlasting friendship that started in high school, that my husband will forever remember and cherish,” Hawkins said. “Ron was
introduced to many things and experiences because of Bryan. They were fishing and hunting brothers as well as brothers-in-law.” With Amy, his girlfriend, Bryan owned Oak Harbor’s Black Swamp Ohio Outdoors, a hunting and fishing business. Now his father runs the business.
“They got the lease kind of late in the year, and they didn’t have time to plant their marshes like they’re supposed to be,” Huff said. “His and Amy’s dream was to put an addition on the lodge, with the marshes all planted and with new duck blinds. We got the new addition up, we got new showers and the marshes all planted.” The business’ Facebook page is full of commemorations and memories of Amy and Bryan from those who hunt and fish at the lodge. “Bryan knew everybody. Everyone knew Bryan,” Huff said. “At his showing, so many people showed up they couldn’t even get in the place. There was no place to park. People parked at the McDonald’s across the street. I remember the funeral home saying they only printed about 200 of the cards that they’d pass out. They were up to 1,000 of the memorial cards.” “Though my family has faced the severe pain and heartache of losing our brother and son in such a tragic accident, we have also been overwhelmed to learn of all the people Bryan has touched and impacted during his life here on Earth,” Hawkins said. “Every time I drive to or near the lake, I think of Bryan’s life, and all the memories it holds. What a wonderful life he lived in his 31 years.”

Amy and Bryan going out on the boat was a common occurrence, their family and friends said. Hawkins said the two would hunt and fish together, and Bryan taught Amy what he knew. “I don’t know exactly when Bryan met her,” Huff said. “But these guys were two peas in a pod. Amy loved to fish, and Bryan got her into the hunting part of it.” Amy was finishing up her nurse practitioner degree. She and Bryan lived together in Perrysburg and were “inseparable,” Huff said. In August, Mercy St. Charles Hospital installed a memorial for Amy in honor of the work she did on staff there. “It’s been tough on all of us,” said her father Albert Santus. “Employers, family, friends. It’s been really tough. I prefer not to speak about it.” According to friends, Amy and Bryan were a great match. “When Amy came into Bryan’s life romantically, we could all see a change in him,” Hawkins said. “I truly believe that she gave him an outlook on life that had never crossed his mind before. He was happy and it showed. They were perfect for each other. Balanced each other out. They were soul mates.” n MYSTERY CONTINUES ON 9

Sixteen-year-old Paige Widmer, who lived in Leesville, South Carolina, with her mother, looked up to Amy, said Gerity. “She just adored Amy,” Gerity said. “On the way to Ohio, that’s all Paige talked about was going fishing with Amy. She really looked up WIDMER to her.” Paige would often travel to Ohio to visit her father, Troy Widmer, who is married to Amy’s sister. Gerity described Paige as “freespirited” and nonconfrontational. Although the two were cousins, they were more like sisters, Gerity said. Usually, Gerity said, she and Paige would cry when Paige had to leave. This last trip back to Ohio, however, Gerity had the chance to tag along. She almost went with the group on the April 16 fishing trip, but decided to have dinner with her aunt instead. The last time she saw her cousin — her sister, as she referred to Paige — was that day at noon. “She was just so full of life,” Paige’s mother Kelly Wade said. “She was always at the center of attention and loved being around everyone, even as a small child. She was always giving to those in need.” Some of her favorite things to do were playing volleyball and spending time with her family and friends. “She was always making sure her friends were OK,” Gerity said. “She was in sports medicine, and she just

wanted to care for people.” Wade said Paige’s favorite subject was math, and she was heavily involved with volleyball, track, chorus and a club involving medical work. She did sports medicine to get familiarized with the work, Wade said. She was planning to start her clinicals this year. Paige also had a great relationship with her brother, J.J.; the two would often go fishing or play basketball together. “They were very close,” Wade said. “They did everything together growing up. He couldn’t wait for her to drive so she could be his chauffeur. That’s what he’d always say.” Wade said she and her daughter were best friends. “She was my rock,” Wade said. “She was very mature for her age. A lot of people would tell you that. “Even though Paige came from a blended family — mom, dad, stepdad, stepmom — we were all very close and did a lot of things together,” she said. “For our kids, this was important.”
Inconclusive investigation
By the end of the day April 17, two of the boaters had been found dead and two more were still missing. That day, the investigation was handed over to the ODNR Watercraft Division. When search crews found the boat, Vernon Meinke, owner of Meinke Marina in Curtice, went out to secure it. “The boat was partially submerged,” Meinke said in his statement. “Three feet of the bow was sticking out of the water. The engines were banging on the reef bottom.” Yet despite the recovery of the boat and — eventually — all four

bodies, questions still lingered in the families’ minds. In July, the ODNR released its report. The same word is repeated throughout. “Type of Incident: Unknown” “Time of Incident: Unknown” “Contributing Factors: Unknown” “Estimated Speed: Unknown” “Due to the fact that everyone on board died and there were no witnesses to the accident, the circumstances surrounding the accident are unknown,” the report concluded. All four boaters drowned, Ottawa County Coroner Dr. Daniel Cadigan said. There was no trauma to any of the bodies and alcohol was not a factor, according to the report. Rodney Althaas, a member of the Ottawa County Sheriff ’s dive team, said the water temperature at the time of his dive was 47 degrees. “In this instance, their body temperature cooled enough for hypothermia to set in,” Cadigan said. “Even though they died from drowning.” Cadigan said this is a major issue in many drownings, because life jackets that don’t fit properly or support the head cannot protect the wearer. The boat motor’s black box — an event data recorder like the ones found in airplanes — was disabled at the time it capsized so the speed and motion of the boat is unknown. The boat’s GPS showed it was traveling west, then took a 90-degree turn south for 24 feet. The empty boat was recovered about threefourths of a mile west of that last recorded position. One thing in the report is clear: “Activity at Time of Incident: Fishing.” The thing that brought them together, and became their last shared activity on Earth. O

Oregon administrator: Toledo water crisis likely ‘false positive’ By Danielle Stanton

As area residents scrambled for bottled water during the do-not-drink advisory in August, many people wondered why Oregon residents did not experience a similar emergency. Oregon’s treatment facility is fed by the same Lake Erie water. “Why wouldn’t Oregon be affected as well?” area residents asked. According to Oregon City Administrator Mike Beazley, the answer is simple: Toledo suffered from a “false positive.” The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) changed the testing protocol, giving Toledo a reading above the level of 1.0 parts per billion (ppb) considered safe, he said. “Folks at our plant think it’s likely the Toledo problem resulted from a false positive test,” Beazley, a former Lucas County administrator, said Sept. 29 after speaking at a monthly meeting of the Eastern Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce in Oregon. The topic of his talk was the Oregon Water Treatment Plant. The state changed the testing protocol used at the treatment plants the morning of Aug. 2, Beazley said.
That morning a high level of microcystin was detected in the water at Toledo’s Collins Park Water Treatment Plant, which triggered the donot-drink advisory. Microcystin is the toxin released by blue-green algae that forms in Lake Erie. It wasn’t a decrepit Collins Park Water Treatment facility that caused the water crisis, but simply a reading that would have been considered normal had the EPA not changed its testing protocol, Beazley said. Also, water that tests high in pH levels can also give a false positive reading, he said. Oregon Mayor Mike Seferian previously told Toledo Free Press his city has an advantage over Toledo because it handles only about 1/12 the volume of water that Toledo’s water plant does. He compared it to cleaning a MINI Cooper versus cleaning a bus after driving it through mud. “It’s a little more than luck,” he said. “But our job is a little easier than theirs.” Despite coming through Toledo’s water crisis “unscathed,” Oregon has met with faculty at the University of Toledo, members of the Ohio EPA and area legislators since the water crisis to make sure they are doing everything they can
to ensure the best water possible. “We don’t think we can afford to get this wrong long-term,” Beazley said. “Oregon will stay ahead of this.” Oregon adjusts its water treatment process all the time, he said, trying to find the most effective means of killing microcystin and other unwanted substances in the water. Currently, they are looking into three potential technologies to add to their water treatment process: dissolved air flotation, ozone or granulated carbon alternatives. “We might choose some combinations,” Beazley said. “We’re running tests on them right now and we’re looking to make a decision on this in the coming months and will take prompt action.” Depending on which technologies they choose, the city will upgrade its plant accordingly, which will cost millions of dollars, he said. Beazley is concerned that Oregon might be a candidate for a false positive because of the high levels of pH that typically found in the water system, he said. “Treated water in this region has a high pH-level and literature in the field says that when you have a higher pH level that the type of testing we use

Michael Collins, wrote in an Oct. 1 email to Toledo Free Press, “There is no scientific evidence to prove or disprove the existence of a false positive. We worked closely with the EPA throughout the Do Not Drink advisory to ensure that decisions were made with public safety and health in mind. Our current testing and sampling procedures, as agreed upon with the EPA, are now being used statewide
and we are confident in the results.” In the meantime, Oregon has asked the state for consistent testing guidelines. “Oregon’s team is interested in a long-term, consistent testing protocol,” Beazley said. “Getting it right is important to Oregon.” Beazley joined the City of Oregon as administrator in March 2010. He has served for more than 25 years in leadership positions in local government and public policy, most recently as Lucas County administrator. O

Lott Industries expanding into food service industry By Michele Jurek

After 58 years, Lott Industries is expanding into the food service industry. Lott employs individuals with developmental disabilities and is affiliated with the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities (LCBDD). Nearly 500 people currently work at its two facilities on Hill Avenue in Toledo and Holland Road in Maumee. The nonprofit also trains employees to work on-site at businesses throughout the community. Over the years, Lott has placed thousands of workers into jobs in the community in a variety of industries. Its building on Hill Avenue has a kitchen that was originally built as a training center, but Lott employees were too busy working with Ford and other businesses to use the kitchen for training. Instead, it has been used as a regular kitchen by an outside vendor who comes in to prepare lunch for the employees. But in October, Lott will begin training some of its employees to prepare and serve lunch to other employees. “Our goal is to be more of a training facility where we teach individuals different jobs to build their skill sets so we can hopefully find them a job in
the community,” said Tim Menke, Lott Industries’ sales manager. “With the kitchen, we will be training people in things like food preparation, cleaning, doing dishes — everything they would need to know to work at a restaurant so they can be placed there.” Lott has hired a consultant to guide it through the licensing and nutrition aspects and a kitchen manager to oversee the business side of this venture. It is also bringing in habilitation coordinators from the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities to train personnel. “The kitchen was built and opened a decade ago with the intent of training our individuals in the food services,” said Dan Clemens, chief operating officer of Lott Industries. “In-sourcing the entire operation to combine the recently hired Lott food experts with the current LCBDD staff that successfully trains individuals every day at Lott Industries will guarantee success.” Eventually the food service training will branch out to feed outside guests. Lott hosts some community events and small conventions at its facilities, and they would like to train employees to serve the people that attend these events. “We are very excited to initially offer nutritious meals at a competitive price to both our staff and indi-
viduals,” Clemens said. “In the near future, we are hoping to increase our food services to the other Lucas County Board of DD facilities, which will allow us to train and employ even more individuals. Eventually, Lott Industries will be ready to maximize the capacity at the Hill facility kitchen, providing food to local charter schools or boxed lunches at local conferences/venues. Our discussions over the last year with local business leaders and community leaders have been met with optimism. The continuing needs of the community and the mission of Lott Industries will provide a viable future for the individuals that we serve while providing a valuable service to the community.” Another recent endeavor is Lott’s partnership with Mobile Meals of Toledo. Employees pack weekend lunch bags for students in six Toledo Public Schools and two Toledo Catholic Diocese schools. Mobile Meals has been preparing healthy weekend food packages for these schools for several years, and now Lott Industries is providing the employees to pack the meals. Lott already packs shelf-stable meals for school systems in California and Arizona, so employees had prior experience in this area. n LOTT CONTINUES ON 13

n LOTT CONTINUED FROM 12 Lott is also beginning a partnership with Sustainable Local Foods, which utilizes science and technology to grow produce in hydroponic indoor gardens 365 days a year. Hydroponic gardens grow plants in a stream of nutrients and water instead of soil. Lott will start by sending 34 employees to work at Erie Street Market where Sustainable Local Foods is harvesting, and they will help with the cleaning and sanitizing of the hydroponic planting channels. The next step will be for Lott employees to grow basil in a nursery-type setting inside the Hill Avenue facility; from there Sustainable Local Foods will harvest, pack and send it to local stores to be sold. Within the next 30 days, Lott’s goal is to have Sustainable Local Foods construct a 30-foot-by-80-foot hoop house, which is similar to a greenhouse but not quite as hot, on the Hill Avenue property to begin growing lettuce and other vegetables. After they learn the system, Lott will probably buy its own hoop house and eventually grow vegetables to be used in its own kitchen. These initiatives will help create more local jobs and bring more healthy foods into local markets. For most of its existence, Lott Industries has worked in light assembly and document destruction, and until 2008 was also heavily involved with the Ford Motor Co. When the economy took a
downward turn, hitting the auto industry hard, the Maumee Stamping Plant, one of the larger plants Lott Industries worked with, was forced to close. About 80 percent of Lott’s revenue at the time came from the auto industry, so the facility had to reinvent itself in 2008. It began partnering with a variety of other businesses in the community to offer services to increase their productivity and profits. Some of the diverse employment opportunities Lott Industries has taken on over the past few years include sorting hangers for Aramark, making traffic barrels, cones and signs for the construction industry, sorting cardboard for United Container Corporation, sorting pallets for Pepsi, assembling packaging for the pharmaceutical industry, assembling garage door parts for Service Spring Corporation, labeling and sorting fertilizer and lawn care products for The Andersons and many other services for a variety of industries. Lott Industries continues to look for new businesses to partner with in order to find more jobs in the community for individuals with disabilities. The Eastwood Theater is screening movies again. The announcement was made via Facebook on Sept. 18, a post shared and commented on more than 200 times. Josh Harnegie, the theater’s outreach coordinator and one of the people behind the opening, was impressed by the excitement. “It had as many shares as it had likes within the span of 20-something hours,” he said. “Personally, I’ve never seen anything like that.” The opening provides a safe entertainment option for the surrounding communities, Harnegie said. “A lot of people, in my research, don’t really cross the bridge to go to Franklin Park,” he said. “It’s not that far away but it might as well be on the other side of the world.” Framed articles from 1921 hang in the front lobby detailing the theater’s early history. The Eastwood Theater shuffled between different owners and churches over the years, once showing pornography only. The theater is currently shared with Cornerstone Church, which holds services there. “I didn’t really understand the rich history of East Toledo until I started looking into the project,” he said. The theater has been renovated and repainted. Upgrading a single-screen theater like the Eastwood Theater can cost anywhere from $130,000 to $500,000 — “quite a significant investment,” Harnegie said. Able to seat 342 people, Harnegie hopes to sponsor additional events like political debates at the venue, or to rent to local charter schools without access to an auditorium. The venue is currently having a “soft open” with weekend showings for “Maleficent” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” All showings cost $5. Weekday showings will eventually be added for family-friendly films and blockbusters, Harnegie said. A grand opening is also being planned and will take place within the next couple weeks. Be warned: There are moments in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” that will make audiences lose their minds and
grasp their armrests. The best way to describe Fincher’s latest film is as a thrill ride. As soon as audiences anticipate the plot heading in a certain direction, it swerves swiftly the other way. Up and down, over and around.
This is a thrill and a heck of a mystery. And some scenes may not be for the faint of heart. The opening sequence of “Gone Girl” features three-second shots around town as a haunting score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross builds.

The scene of the crime never sounded so eerie. A score from this same Oscarwinning duo helped elevate Fincher’s “The Social Network” to precision and evoked a similar feeling of suspense. But with “Gone Girl,” this is suspense on a whole new level. Telling audiences who plan to see this movie to hold on to their seats may not be enough. They may need a helmet and kneepads. The movie, adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, follows Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) whose wife Amy, played with cunning perfection by Rosamund Pike, comes up missing on the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary. Throughout the 149-minute film, audiences are given glimpses at what may or may not have happened to Amy. As curiosity and attention from neighbors and then the country builds, the details of exactly how Amy disappeared unravel like the layers
of an onion. But what is revealed is something remarkably unpredictable — no spoilers here. Also along for the ride in the film is Detective Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens), who helps drive the drama forward. Attorney Tanner Bolt (Tyler Perry) and Nancy Grace-like anchor Ellen Abbott (Missi Pyle) add life and depraved yet realistic humor to the story. Carrie Coon also delivers a strong performance as Nick’s twin sister Margo. With such a list of impressive performances, “Gone Girl” almost has it all. The story falls short in the denouement however, by attempting to wrap everything up with a nice red bow and unnecessarily speeding up a calculatingly deliberate pace. But the experience along the way is definitely worth the ride. Just grab a helmet. Rated R for a scene of bloody violence, some strong sexual content/nudity and language.
