To the burn

ast Thanksgiving I lost my dear childhood friend Chuck Wilson. He died suddenly with no warning. My sister contacted me, telling me to come see him while he was in the hospital. I boarded a plane to New Jersey but arrived too late. The same thing happened to me when my father passed; I was too late to say goodbye. Chuck’s passing hit me just as hard and when I went back for the funeral I was asked to say a few words. That was the most difficult public speaking appearance I have ever made. After the service I got to spend some quality time with Chuck’s son Kyle. He is 25 years old, as is my daughter Katy. We spoke of the old times and shared some laughs and some tears. While there I told Kyle of my dream golf trip to the Old Course at St. Andrews that would be in June. It was Mark Beier’s (voice of the Rockets) 60th birthday and he invited me, Ed Beczynski and Bill Kline to go to ScotThomas F. Pounds land to play at “the home of golf.” Kyle and I both knew how much Chuck had wanted to play the Old Course. Chuck’s family was Scottish and that was always a dream for him. So Kyle and I decided we would team up and make that happen. Chuck was cremated. Kyle saved some ashes for me to scatter in Scotland. It is one thing to say you are going to do something like this, but the logistics are altogether more difficult. Kyle arranged to have a small container of Chuck’s ashes arrive at St. Andrews. I wanted to pour the ashes into the Swilcan Burn off of the worldfamous Swilcan Bridge. I didn’t think it would be easy. I figured if I wanted to do the same thing on the 18th hole of Inverness that I would be stopped and turned away. I wanted to do it before we played (I didn’t want to burden the caddies), so we headed to the course the first day we were in town. As we approached those hallowed grounds, we found it to be an open park with people just milling around the course and on it. There was even a street that ran right through the 1st and 18th fairways. I had to wait for a couple of foursomes to pass but then I had a break long enough to rest my old friend on the burn. I stood on the bridge and released Chuck’s ashes to the wind, returning him to the Earth. It was a quiet and somber moment. He was my best friend and he was gone. But I felt good that I was able to do that for him and his family. Saying goodbye to Chuck in the midst of a life celebration for another dear friend made me stop to appreciate the great circle of life and the uncharted courses on which all of us travel. O Thomas F. n OTTNEY CONTINUED FROM 3 Shortly after Memorial Day, a letter to the editor came across my desk. Vietnam veteran Daniel Cannode of Waterville was concerned that fewer and fewer members of local veterans groups seem to be honoring the annual ritual of placing flags at veteran headstones in area cemeteries. “The current generation it appears does not deem it necessary

to remember the sacrifices veterans made to keep this great republic free,” Cannode wrote. “How much longer will it be before it is ‘just another Monday holiday’?” I can’t speak for veterans groups, but it does seem too few civilians take time out of their three-day weekend to attend a Memorial Day ceremony. Too few bother on the Fourth of July to think about the true cost of our independence. Too few ever pause to

thank a veteran for his or her service. The service members highlighted in last week’s yearbook represent only a small fraction of those with ties to this area; the issue is our modest effort to thank them all, one we plan to continue for years to come. The room where Elaina Steinfurth was last seen is frozen in time. The dark, cold space offers a glimpse into the turmoil that has enveloped her family during the past month. Overturned mattresses — grungy and stained — and piles of clothes lay scattered across the floor, untouched since the most recent police search. The room is colored by a pink glow from the light filtered by window shades. The eerie silence is broken by the slow, low whir of a ceiling fan. In the corner of the room, a torn bag of diapers sits unused. Eighteen-month-old Elaina was moved from house to house during the weeks before she disappeared. The last night she was seen was spent on Federal Street in an East Toledo neighborhood dotted with boardedup houses and worn-out homes where children run and play with broken toys. Shattered beer bottles and spent firecrackers litter the sidewalks. People crowd front porches. Kids laugh and neighbors yell. Since Elaina’s June 2 disappearance, the routine is broken daily by reporters and news cameras, white-collar workers referred to as “$100,000 kids” by Federal Street residents. The persistent media attention adds tension to the griefstricken street.

Barney and ramen noodles

Despite her surroundings, family members describe Elaina as a curious and playful baby who laughed and brought joy to those around her. “Everyone who was in the house always gravitated toward her,” said Julie King, who has spent decades in the house where Elaina was last seen. “She usually sat up on the couch and watched my grandson and her sister play with the dogs. She would watch Barney, Wiggles. She’d watch SpongeBob with the kids.” Terry Steinfurth Sr. said his granddaughter was always happy and playful when he saw her. “She was just starting to walk. A week before she went missing, I found out she could high-five,” he said. “When she was born, she had her foot turned in, but she had therapy for it and was walking fine. She had blue eyes. A lot of people say she looks like her mom, but when she was a baby, she looked like my son.” Julie said Elaina loved to eat ramen noodles. The night before the baby’s disappearance, Julie remembered

eating noodles with the toddler. “She always ate ramen noodles,” Julie said. When Julie’s grandchildren set down an iPad, Elaina was quick to grab it and begin tapping the screen. “She would go sneaking, quiet as a church mouse, to [the iPads],” King said. “Oh my goodness, she would just press everything. She just liked the different things, you know?” Angela’s stepfather, Richard Schiewe, said Elaina loved macaroni and cheese and playing with ABC magnets on his refrigerator. “I just tickled her a lot and watched her laugh,” he said. “She would climb up the stairs and slide down on her butt. She could run, but she couldn’t run real good. She’d always run over to me and say, ‘Papa! Papa!’ Them babies loved coming over to my house. “She loved the swimming pool. We bought her a floatie thing and life jackets. She loved it. “I’m gonna miss all that. No more Christmases or birthdays, no more Easter egg hunts. There’s no more now. All I got now is memories and pictures.” Those happy moments were apparently rare for Elaina. Witnesses say Elaina’s mother, Angela Steinfurth, would leave Elaina in a playpen for most of the day. At 18 months, she could not complete full sentences and was “jabbering.” Angel Zam, a family friend, said Angela would leave Elaina alone for hours at a time. “That baby was in the playpen for 20 out of 24 hours. I feel so bad because I didn’t do anything. I feel ashamed,” she said. Julie, the mother of Angela’s boyfriend Steven W. King, said she would often take Elaina out of the playpen when she got a chance because she felt sorry for the child. She described a sad Elaina the past few months before she disappeared. “I thought she should be just more full of life,” Julie said.

The disappearance

Terry Steinfurth Jr., Elaina’s father and Angela’s estranged husband, came to pick up Elaina and her 4-year-old sister Kylie between noon and 1 p.m. June 2 at the King home at 704 Federal St. An argument ensued when Angela refused to give Elaina to him, according to several witnesses. “They woke me up with their arguing between noon and 1 p.m. I had been taking a nap,” neighbor Dennis Bolfa said. “They were yelling back and forth, and [Steinfurth Jr.] kept

saying, ‘I want my kid! I want my kid!’” Almost an hour after the start of the argument, Angela went in to get Elaina, but came out “crying and screaming” that Elaina was gone, according to Steinfurth Sr. The family began searching the area for Elaina. They called the police when she could not be found. Bolfa said “something wasn’t right” about Angela’s initial reaction. “She was pacing up and down the street, and then she walked up to me and asked for a cigarette. She went from crying to smiling. How do you go from fake crying to a smile?” he

said. “Something ain’t right there. If I lost my kid, I wouldn’t be asking for a cigarette. That’s a crock of s***. If it was my kid, I’d be going crazy.” Angela was arrested June 12 on a charge of child endangerment. On June 24, she was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of obstruction of justice. She appeared before a grand jury for the child endangerment charge after a preliminary hearing on the morning of June 24. A pretrial date has been set for July 24.

Bond lowered

At Angela’s arraignment June 26,

Judge Gary Cook lowered Angela’s bond from $250,000 to $100,000 with no option to pay 10 percent to the court. This means she must arrange for full payment of the $100,000 rather than paying the court 10 percent of it. In such cases, the incarcerated person can either stay in jail or find a way to get 10 percent of the money to a bail bondsmen as a nonrefundable fee. Once the person pays the fee and gets cosigners and collateral property put up, the bail bondsmen will pay the full bond so the incarcerated person can get out of jail. n ELAINA CONTINUES ON 7

$5,000 and could set up a payment plan for an additional $5,000. “If she has family support, she could be already out,” said Shon Hunter, owner of In and Out 24/7 Bail Bonds. Schiewe told Toledo Free Press on July 3 he was working to get her out of jail within days. The possibility of Angela being back on the street raises questions

concerning her safety, given the national attention her missing child has garnered.

Midnight trip

Weeks of investigation passed with no sign of Elaina. The Toledo Police Department and FBI have shared few details with the public, but Toledo Free Press broke a story June 19 about a tip that revealed new information.

It’s Time!

Angela was seen leaving the Federal Street home between midnight and 1 a.m. the morning of the toddler’s disappearance. Bolfa, who lives across from ANGELA STEINFURTH the King home, said he saw Angela and her boyfriend Steven W. King leave in their van and return 10-15 minutes later. On June 12, police seized the van Bolfa saw the couple leaving in. “I thought they were just going to get cigarettes or something,” he said. “It didn’t dawn on me at the time.” When Bolfa was interviewed by Toledo Free Press on June 18, he had not yet reported this information to authorities, who later questioned him about the incident. “That’s abnormal for that van to leave after 10 [at night]. They don’t usually do that,” Bolfa said on June 20. Bolfa said he believes Angela was involved in the disappearance. “A couple days before, she said, ‘[Steinfurth Jr.] ain’t getting my kid,’” Bolfa said. “She’s got something to do with it, no doubt.”

Cellmate confession

broke the news that a family reported a tip that Angela had confessed to her cellmate about what happened on the early morning of June 2. Jobeth Adams of North Toledo said her sister, Connie Elam, called her June 18 from Lucas County Corrections Center. Elam told Adams that Angela had confessed to helping her boyfriend hide Elaina’s body. “[Elam] called Tuesday night, and she was really upset,” Adams said. “She said, ‘I don’t know why this woman has decided to confide in me.’” According to Elam, Angela’s boyfriend Steven threw Elaina against the wall between the night of June 1 and the morning of June 2, injuring her. King then put the toddler down for a nap and when Angela checked on her later, Elaina was dead. “They wrapped [Elaina] up in a blanket, and took her down by the High-Level Bridge and [Steven] stood behind [Angela] and she threw this baby in the river,” Adams said. “[I said] ‘So what you’re trying to tell me, Connie, is there is no hope for this baby coming home?” Adams said. “And she said, ‘No.’ She said, ‘They’re looking in the right place for this baby. This baby is dead. She’s in the river.’” n ELAINA CONTINUES ON 8

Rowan said she saw no bruises on Elaina, contradicting reports of a source named only as “Frank” on HLN’s “Nancy Grace.” “I didn’t see anything, but I did just glance at the baby,” Rowan said. “But even at a glance you’d notice a black eye.” The store normally records customers coming and going, but Rowan said the cameras were down that morning due to a “wire mishap.” Rowan called the Crime Stoppers tip line June 8, six days after the toddler’s disappearance. Rowan said she men-

So it hurt my sister. It hurt her bad. It is a real messed up situation.” An attorney for Angela did not return calls seeking comment.

Elam called Adams at 9:24 p.m. June 18. Adams’ husband called Toledo Police Department’s Crime Stoppers tip line at 10:50 p.m. “Carl called and gave all the information, and they transferred us over to the FBI,” Adams said. Adams said her sister is only interested in helping the search for Elaina. “The other women [in Angela’s cell] want something. My sister don’t want something,” Adams said. Adams said Elam and Angela became cellmates June 17. “[At first], she felt bad because all the girls in there was wanting to beat the girl up,” Adams said. “Then all of a sudden, the girl comes to her and confided in her and she’s like, ‘You didn’t take your baby to the hospital?’” Elam is incarcerated on child endangerment charges, but has not been convicted. The charges stem from a March 20 incident in which Elam left her 2-year-old daughter with the child’s paternal grandfather, Aubrey Dale Marshall, a convicted sex offender. Adams said Elam did not know of Marshall’s prior conviction. Marshall is charged with raping Elam’s daughter, but has not been convicted. “My sister’s in there for some-

The latest clue in the investigation came when a Toledo-area fisherman gave what he believed to be human hair to the Toledo Police Department on June 23. There have been two reports of possible human hair in the Maumee

Bolfa reports seeing Angela and Steven W. King leave the King house between midnight and 1 a.m. on June 2.

n ELAINA CONTINUED FROM 8 “Well, I was fishing with my granddaughter and we pulled something up and I said, ‘Hey, I think this is human hair,’” Boswell told Toledo Free Press on July 2. Boswell said he handed the sample, which consisted of three strands varying from 3-5 inches long, to police officers stationed on the bank of the river. A detective later approached Boswell about his discovery.

“He said, ‘Hey, I hate to interrupt your fishing trip but I need to get some information,’” Boswell said. Boswell said the police told him they were getting the strands tested and would get back to him. On July 2, he said they haven’t contacted him. On July 3, Toledo police confirmed the hairs were of human origin, but a DNA test matching the strands to Elaina could take weeks. When the second hairs were found, relatives of Elaina petitioned the Toledo Police

A Toledo tradition since 2005 Department to dive the river. On July 3, the Toledo Fire Department sent divers into the river at the spot where the fishermen found the strands. As of presstime July 3, the results of the dive were not known. The discoveries suggest the missing toddler’s body could have been placed in the river under the High-Level Bridge, matching the earlier story reported to the FBI by the sister of Angela’s cellmate. n ELAINA CONTINUES ON 10

Allegations of abuse

A chorus of witnesses in the Federal Street neighborhood said Angela verbally abused Elaina and physically abused her 4-year-old daughter, Kylie. “She would slap the oldest in the face, tore her hair,” Julie said. “She was rough, very rough. She would yank her up by the arm.”

n

Julie Malkin, public information officer for Lucas County Children Services, said the agency responded to a call regarding Angela and Steinfurth Jr. earlier this spring. “We investigated a situation where we were concerned about the children being exposed to domestic violence,” Malkin said. “In this case, the worker felt that the situation had resolved itself.”

July 7, 2013 Angel Zam said she heard Angela screaming at Elaina. “I’ve seen her be abusive, have heard her scream [to Elaina], ‘You little bastard!’ You know, stuff you just don’t say,” she said. “She was really abusive to the kids. She had a lot of issues. I felt sorry for her.” Zak Zam, Angel’s son, said he witnessed similar incidents. n ELAINA CONTINUES ON 11

n ELAINA CONTINUED FROM 10 “She just seemed very violent toward [Kylie]. Slapped her across the face, said, ‘You little b****.’ Those are some of the worse things that I’ve seen,” he said. Ginger Smith, Elaina’s cousin, has helped raise awareness and lead the volunteer search effort. “I know the mother wasn’t a very nice mother. She yelled at them and was always cussing,” she said. Angela’s treatment of the two girls was the final straw in Steinfurth Jr.’s decision to end his relationship with her, according to Steinfurth Sr. “I have seen her smack, yell, scream at [Kylie]. I flat-out told her I don’t agree with it. I was very happy when [Steinfurth Jr.] said he was going to try to take custody,” Steinfurth Sr. said. Julie said she wanted Steinfurth Jr. to take custody of the two girls. “I said to him, ‘You gotta do something,’” Julie said. “‘I’ll help you but something’s gotta be done. I’ll do anything to help you.’” Julie said she had considered calling Lucas County Children Services, but hesitated. “I didn’t want to see the kids go through the system, you know?” she said. Angela had previously lived with Julie for a few months, and that time together “made me hate my house,” Julie said. She also said Angela regularly smoked marijuana. “She’d do it a few times a day, if she could afford it. She’d go to people’s houses,” Julie said. “I think it’s an inside job on the mom, if you ask me,” Federal Street resident Terry Luce said. “She’s all happy and smiling. That mom messed the baby up.” Schiewe denied the allegations. “Both my granddaughters loved their mom,” he said. “It’s bulls***. She loved them girls. None of them neighbors know nothing. Everybody wants the media spotlight.”

Fractured family

The stress and national attention combined with the strain of a missing child pushed the families into a clash witnessed by the nation. Three factions emerged. The Steinfurths composed the largest group. Steinfurth Jr. and his father along with Elaina’s cousin Ginger Smith spend much of their time at a “command post” at the end of Federal Street. Search teams meet there. The area also serves as a gossip hotspot and festers with a simmering discontent that grows daily. Angela’s stepfather Schiewe has publicly defended her from the beginning. The Kings, represented mostly in the media by Julie, have not involved

themselves in public confrontations in front of the media, but repeatedly noted dissension among themselves and the Steinfurths and Schiewe. The conflicts began with the “Nancy Grace” show. Grace had several family members on her nightly primetime show, drawing more attention and publicly displaying the infighting as the rift between family members widened. The fighting hit a boiling point on June 20 with a video from Toledo Free Press showing Steinfurth Jr. and Schiewe shouting in front of multiple

news cameras in front of the Toledo Municipal Courthouse. The video appeared on multiple television stations, including before Grace’s national audience. Despite the different factions’ distaste for each other and the media, each continues to emphasize that they should keep the focus on finding Elaina. “We ain’t here to worry about them guys. We just want to find the baby,” Smith said. At press time, Angela is in Lucas County Correctional Center awaiting

trial for the obstruction of justice charge. Her pretrial is set for July 24. “I don’t feel that she should get out,” Steinfurth Sr. said. “Until that baby is found, I think she should sit. I feel she knows more than what she’s saying.” “I’m happy,” said Smith at the court appearance June 24. “Hopefully, we’re going to get somewhere now.”

Searching

During the week of the July Fourth holiday, under gray and rainy skies, Steinfurth Jr. continued

to troll the bottom of the Maumee River where the fishermen found the hair, searching for his missing daughter. He drops a line with a large hook into the muddy waves, on a mission that seems to have evolved from rescue to recovery. His life is frozen in time, with a dark, cold space where his 18-monthold daughter Elaina used to be. O Anyone with information regarding Elaina Steinfurth’s disappearance is encouraged to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at (419) 255-1111.

The mythical phoenix rose from the ashes of its own destruction. The Canadian lake freighter Phoenix Star will not. Instead, the freighter’s recordbreaking 45-year career will end under a scrapper’s torch in a dry dock on the Maumee River. Workers at Toledo Shipyard, 2245 Front St., just downriver from the Veterans Glass City Skyway, have begun dismantling the 730-foot grain ship and expect to finish the project within 90 days, said Tony LaMantia, president of Ironhead Marine, which operates the shipyard. The freighter was apparently the victim of an economic perfect storm, according to news reports: Inability to compete with newer, cheaper tugbarge combinations, a series of owners with financial troubles and the ship’s own condition. Additionally, said LaMantia, the shipyard needs the dry dock which

Phoenix Star occupies for its other work: inspection and repair of operating lake ships. Phoenix Star has, since the end of the 2012 season, occupied the larger of Ironhead’s two dry docks, its wheelhouse looming over the shipyard’s main gate on Front Street. Freighter-watchers, who go by the nickname “boatnerds,” have witnessed and posted photos of the ship’s equipment being removed and holes cut in its sides. “Basically the vessel has reached the end of its service life,” LaMantia said. Refurbishing the hull or converting the ship to a self-unloading freighter of the type that took over the Great Lakes trade in the last half of the 20th century, is not feasible, he added. Launched in 1968 in Collingwood, Ontario, on Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, once a major shipbuilding center on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes, the freighter sailed for decades as the Algocen, a grain carrier for Algoma Central Railway’s Marine Division. n PHOENIX STAR CONTINUES ON 13

A Toledo tradition since 2005 n PHOENIX STAR CONTINUED FROM 12 According to www.boatnerd.com, Algocen set a number of records for grain cargoes, but also hauled other materials such as iron ore and stone. LaMantia was reluctant to talk about the string of financial difficulties that resulted in the freighter being stranded in his dry dock, but shipwatchers online tell this story: Algocen’s four big diesel engines powered it up and down the Lakes system until 2005, when it was sold to an outfit called Recycling Technologies Inc. and traded its Canadian Maple Leaf for a Panamanian flag before being used as a storage barge in New Jersey. Following that, it was bought by a group of investors in St. Catharines, Ontario, operating as Vanguard Shipping (Great Lakes) Ltd., renamed the J.W. Shelley and sailed back into the Great Lakes under its own power, something the shipwatchers at boatnerd.com say rarely happens. Vanguard’s website identifies the company as “an aggressive, new company which prides itself as being the most costeffective freight option within our market.” No one answered the phone at the number listed on the website. But financial troubles resulted in a court-ordered sale of Vanguard’s assets to a subsidiary of a company called T.F. Warren Group — identified on its website as specializing in “Engineering, Fabrication, Erection, Repair, Maintenance, Coating and Linings to the Tank and Terminal industry.” Calls

placed to the listed phone number of the company’s president, Terry Warren, in Brantford, Ontario, were not returned. The relatively low cost and freedom from environmental regulations in some nations has resulted in many a lake boat being beached and scrapped far from home. More than a few lakers have been towed across the ocean to places like Alang, India, where miles of beaches are lined with the hulks of dead ships being cut to pieces by men with improvised cutting torches and little to no safety equipment — but considering themselves lucky to have the job. Aliaga, Turkey, is also the last port of call for tired and broken ships making their appointment with the torch. Only recently has a combination of outcry about environmental impacts and relatively lower costs meant that some lakers meet their end in the Great Lakes. The freighter Maumee waits her turn at Port Colborne, Ontario, on the Welland Canal, and the tanker Imperial Sarnia is about half demolished. Recently, the venerable Canadian laker James Norris was scrapped at Port Colborne. Other old lakers have seen their sterns and engines cut away, their hulls converted into barges, LaMantia said. Meanwhile, newer freighters entering Great Lakes service, such as those recently bought by Algoma and Canada Steamship Lines on the Canadian side, are built in Chinese shipyards and sailed across the ocean to the Lakes. Great Lakes shipyards on either side of the border, LaMantia said, “can’t compete with those prices.” O

Toledo VA hires ref lect focus on mental health

By Paige Shermis

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer pshermis@toledofreepress.com

The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System has hired one new mental health professional who will be placed in Toledo and is interviewing candidates to serve in two peer support specialist positions. The system made the hires in response to President Barack Obama’s Aug. 31, 2012, Executive Order to Improve Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members and Military Families. Nationwide, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has hired 1,600 mental health professionals for the first hiring initiative. The second hiring initiative involves the acquisition of peer support specialists. “One psychologist in Toledo has been hired at the outpatient center. Veterans who previously wanted to file a service-connected disability claim for a mental health issue [such as] PTSD, depression or any other mental health issue related to their service had to go to Ann Arbor or Cleveland for the compensation and pension exam. Now, with the psychologist that they hired through this initiative, they can go through the Toledo clinic. That will cut down a lot of travel time for veterans,” said Derek D. Atkinson, public affairs officer for the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Psychologist Stephanie Young was hired by the VA in August, and began working at Toledo’s Community Based Outpatient Clinic in November. “I love it here. It’s been a great job. I got interested in working in the VA through my grandfather, who was a

Marine. He was a very persistent advocate for veterans’ rights. … He passed a law or a bill where City Hall [in Buffalo, N.Y.,] has to have a bulletin board for veterans, so they know where to get services,” Young said. Young, who graduated with her Ph.D from the University of Toledo in 2010, currently conducts compensation and pension exams for veterans. These are comprised of a general mental health evaluation to determine if a veteran has a mental health diagnosis, and then a determination if the diagnosis is related to their time in the military. “I love it, just working with different types of veterans, working with different types of things they’re experiencing. The VA is different than other places; it’s an environment built out of respect,” Young said. The candidates for the two peer support specialist positions are currently going through the interview process, Atkinson said. “These are veterans who have been through treatment, through therapy, and they’re there to help other veterans complete their therapy [and] help coach them and guide them throughout the process,” Atkinson said. The VA Toledo Community Based Outpatient Clinic, which is part of the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, celebrated its grand opening in November. “There’s been a lot of praise and support for that clinic. It’s absolutely beautiful. We’ve been adding staff, and able to see the growth down there in Toledo,” Atkinson said. Atkinson said veterans are able to come to the clinic to see if they’re eligible for services, or call (419) 259-2000 to talk to an eligibility professional at the clinic. O

Toledoan Ken Leslie is a funny man — a funny man on a mission. As a former standup comedian, he knows how to brighten a conversation. As a former homeless person, he knows desperation. Last year, Leslie, the founder of 1Mattters and Tent City, launched Veterans Matter. The nonprofit organization LESLIE helps house homeless veterans and their families by raising money for the rental deposits required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program (HUD-VASH). The program provides veterans with vouchers for free housing, but requires a rent deposit up front. “These are people who generally don’t have jobs or income, and so they can’t produce the required deposits,” Leslie said. “They’ve been forced to beg from churches, VFWs and the like.” Leslie said the first year’s effort, which basically served as a pilot program, has generated some tangible results. “It’s pretty incredible. To date, we have housed 136 individuals and 90 veteran families in 22 cities in three states. We have raised more than $100,000, half of which was raised by ZZ Top at the Houston chapter.” Veterans Matter gained momentum with the help of ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill, who was inspired by Leslie’s efforts and opened up a chapter in Houston. Since then, John Mellencamp has joined the effort and the program is finding that other organizations and artists with similar goals are willing to partner up for

strength in numbers. One of those organizations is the American Music Project: Voices for Veterans, which is a collaboration of musicians and music industry executives brought together to raise funds and awareness for housing homeless veterans. John McGah is a senior associate with the National Center on Family Homelessness, and is involved with Voices for Veterans McGah said Voices for Veterans is part of the Give US Your Poor initiative, which in 2007 released a benefit CD featuring talented homeless musicians with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Merchant, Pete Seeger, Jewel, Keb’ Mo’, Michelle Shocked, Buffalo Tom and actors Danny Glover and Tim Robbins. “The CD showed homeless people not merely defined by their housing need,” McGah said. “It showed people with amazing creative talents, and the power to connect with others through music regardless of housing status. Homelessness is about disconnection; music is about connection.” McGah added that collaborative efforts are essential in fighting homelessness, and that Veterans Matter’s focus on one key aspect of housing made an easy choice as a beneficiary of the Voices for Veterans campaign. “Ending veteran homelessness is a daunting task,” he said. “It’s big. But the bipartisan political support and public support exists. And the numbers of veterans experiencing homelessness is something we can wrap our arms around — fewer than 63,000 at last count by HUD. When looking for the most strategic partners to truly move the needle in ending veteran homelessness, Veterans Matter really stuck out.” Leslie echoed McGah’s assertion that Veterans Matter is especially effective in providing housing for veterans. n VETERANS CONTINUES ON 15

n VETERANS CONTINUED FROM 14 When asked how veterans are able to sustain housing after the deposits are met, he explained that housing vouchers and assistance from the VA ensure that long-term housing and pathways to autonomy are provided. Shawn Dowling, a social worker

with the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, said the VA Healthcare for Homeless Veterans, HUD-VASH and HUD’s Section 8 Program collaborate to transition chronically homeless veterans to supported housing through the use of tenet-based vouchers distributed

through the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority. In an email to Toledo Free Press, Dowling wrote that the transition to supported housing is a seamless process, supported by a wide-reaching network of partnerships. She also stressed the need for awareness.

“The public can assist by spreading the word and encouraging all homeless and at risk of homelessness veterans to contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans,” she wrote. “Calling into the hotline will allow our homeless program staff to engage the veteran in VA and community services to assist with their transition.” Leslie praised the legislation that has made the HUD vouchers possible, as well as additional help Veterans Matter has received from all levels of government and other similar nonprofits. “This is probably the most effective program the government has ever created to house veterans who are on the streets, and it’s my hope that Congress will continue to fund the vouchers until every single veteran is

off the streets,” Leslie said. After the success of the pilot program, Leslie and others are working to bring additional Veterans Matter chapters to other cities across the country, including Seattle. New England’s chapter recently opened. The secret to his success is simplicity, Leslie explained, and that focus and precision on a manageable task is what fuels Veterans Matter’s momentum. “This program is one of the few places to which people can donate that has a 100 percent success rate. Their money actually helps people get housed every single time. This is so perfect and simple. The housing is sustainable. All we need to do is help push them over the threshold.” For more information, visit the website veteransmatter.org. O

It was roughly a year ago when funnyman Frank Caliendo found himself at a crossroads. For years he entertained sports fans as a regular contributor to the “FOX NFL Sunday” show. However, it was after the 2011 gridiron season that the master impressionist, who first gained mainstream attention with his impersonation of former NFL head coach and retired television football analyst John Madden, felt he needed a change. “I got tired at FOX,” said Caliendo, calling from his Phoenix, Ariz., home. “They got tired of me. It was so much of the same stuff. It was a spot where you couldn’t experiment because so many people were watching and you only have one shot. When you’re on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ you can do sketches for 90 minutes and throw some weird stuff in the end. When you’re doing that during a football pre-game show, it’s not really about the comedy anyways.” While he was preparing for a fulltime return to touring his standup comedy, Caliendo was contacted by ESPN about contributing material to its football coverage. On the surface it may seem like the same gig, but he said being a part of the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader of Sports isn’t short on the unique type of opportunities he wanted. “The great thing about ESPN, when we knock it out of the park like my Mel Kiper Jr. impersonation, they played it eight times and pieces of it run days after,” Caliendo said. “It used to be when I was on Sunday morning with FOX, that was the only time you saw it, but the Kiper sketch has over 300,000 hits on YouTube.” For sports fans, that sketch is hilarious as Caliendo embodies the en-

ergetic spirit of the perfectly coiffed NFL draft expert. During the past year, Caliendo expanded his repertoire to include new impressions of Jerry Jones and John Gruden. Fans of Caliendo may hear those new voices as the funnyman returns to Ohio for a 7:30 p.m. July 14 show at Toledo Funny Bone, 6140 Levis Commons Blvd., Perrysburg. While the comedian said he enjoys performing in the Buckeye State, he actually has a summer home in Avon Lake outside of Cleveland. His wife is from the area and it’s a great opportunity for his kids to spend time with his in-laws. Also, the vacation time allows Caliendo to mine new stage material. Lately he’s been adding more family jokes into his set in hopes of making a slight change to his material. This move is tied to the one area where Caliendo could see himself return to non-sports-based television. Remember, the funnyman received his television start as a cast member of FOX-TV sketch comedy show “MADtv.” He also received plenty of mainstream attention with his WTBS series “Frank TV,” which only lasted one season but featured Caliendo showing off his mastery of impressions (President George W. Bush, Jay Leno, Robin Williams, et al.) within the sketch comedy program. “I’ve been talking to [comedian] Jim Breuer because I’m trying to develop a family show,” Caliendo said. “We’ve had a couple of conversations. I’m just trying to figure out what I could do. I’m a dad now and starting to get a lot of these experiences with kids and being married. We’ll see where that goes.” Whatever the future holds, you get the sense that Caliendo won’t be giving up his first love. “I know what I do best,” Caliendo laughed. “That’s going on stage and acting like an idiot.” O

Chicks for Charity will host its annual Chicks Mix gala on July 16, with proceeds benefiting Shared Lives Studio. Chicks for Charity is an informal group of 1,900 women in the Toledo area who raise money for a local charity, which changes every two years. The featured charities are chosen through a vote. Chicks Mix will take place from 5:30-9 p.m. at Toledo Botanical Garden. More than 500 women and girls are expected to attend, according to a news release. The event is open to the public. Tickets for the event cost $37 for women 21 and older, and $20 for Junior Chicks aged 20 and younger. Lori Schoen is Shared Lives Studio’s director.

“Shared Lives Studio is a nonprofit studio run by Lott Industries, which provides employment for artists with developmental disabilities. They create and sell their art at the studio and the gallery. That’s how they earn their wages. They can create art and express themselves artistically,” Schoen said. Shared Lives’ two locations, on North Saint Clair Street in Downtown and in Maumee, employ 35 artists. They are partnered with the Lucas County Department of Developmental Disabilities. “The first studio [opened] in Holland in 2008. It was the president of Lott, Joan Uhl Browne, [who] decided to get the studio going to provide employment for people after we lost so many jobs with the automotive plant going bust. There are studios all over the country [like it] and those were

successful,” Schoen said. At Shared Lives, artists explore a variety of artistic mediums, including painting, ceramics, sculpture, glass, garden art, jewelry and even making silk scarves. “Everybody has their own individual interests, so we nurture those interests,” Schoen said. Shared Lives Studio has been able to expand its activities with the money Chicks for Charity has raised so far. “Already, we’ve started children’s classes with some of that money. What’s cool is that we’re letting our artists mentor the program. Some of our artists that have disabilities are helping the class and empowering them to teach. It [also] allows us to continue operations,” Schoen said. “The Chicks money allows us to keep our doors open, and provides these opportunities for these individuals. What this studio does for them is that it allows them to have an equal playing field with anybody. It gives them a voice. Having Chicks allows their voice to reach to so many people.” Artwork done by Shared Lives’ artists is set to be featured at Chicks Mix ‘13. “At Chicks Mix, our artists will be there. We will have their art as their centerpieces. It will give more exposure to what they do. They will be able to come and talk about their work in a public place — something that doesn’t get to happen all the time for people with disabilities. For them, it’s an incredible way to

Depp entertains in ‘Lone Ranger’; Gru and minions bring laughs in ‘Despicable 2’ By James A. Molnar Toledo Free Press Film Editor jmolnar@toledofreepress.com

tures thrills à la “I Am Legend” and provides for a truly enjoyable blockbuster.

‘Man of Steel’

‘Despicable Me 2’

The tiny, yellow minions are back and just as hilarious as they were in the original 2010 film. (They are getting their own movie December 2014.) The kids, whom ex-villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) adopts in the first film, continue as the emotional core. The youngest and cutest kid, Agnes (Elsie Fisher), will bring tears to audiences’ eyes. The story this time around is not quite as creative, but it still provides some enjoyable moments.

This relaunch of the Superman saga is fantastic. Audiences are given a won-

derful origin story for the Man of Steel, à la Christopher Nolan, who is a producer (think “Batman Begins”). Henry Cavill and Amy Adams are the perfect Clark Kent and Lois Lane, while Michael Shannon plays a scary good villain. (The 3-D can be avoided.)

Watch Toledo Free Press Film Editor James A. Molnar discuss movies on “WNWO Today” around 5:50 a.m. on Fridays. Also, listen to him discuss movies on “Eye on Your Weekend” on 1370 WSPD every Friday at 6 p.m. Read more at toledofreepress. com/movies.

‘The Heat’

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star in this female buddy cop comedy. Both play to their strengths and stereotypes. Bullock is the FBI agent and McCarthy is the zany one who steals your heart. While audiences have seen both play these roles before, the chemistry and comedic timing between the two are undeniable. Directed by Paul Feig (Mount Clemens, Mich., native), whose last movie, “Bridesmaids,” was a standout hit, “The Heat” feels lukewarm at times and it underperforms.

‘World War Z’

A surprisingly good take on the zombie genre, this Brad Pitt film fea-

PHOTO bY Peter Mountain / Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer, Inc.

There is a great Western film directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp. However, it is not “The Lone Ranger,” now in theaters. That great movie was “Rango,” a highly stylized and smart, animated feature from 2011. Depp voiced an ordinary chameleon that found himself the sheriff of a small town in need of a hero. “Rango” is 40 minutes shorter than “The Lone Ranger” and more impactful. Plus, younger viewers won’t be as frightened. That’s not to say Verbinski’s relaunch of the classic cowboy adventure series is bad. “The Lone Ranger” features a gallimaufry of great storytelling, acting and visuals. Depp plays sidekick Tonto and ends up stealing the movie. One could wonder why the movie wasn’t titled “Tonto: The Weird One.” Armie Hammer, known for his roles in “The Social Network” and “J. Edgar,” plays the title character and appears to have stronger morals this box office season than the Man of Steel himself. It’s quite a refreshing portrayal, even with the gore and violence that surrounds him. Where this movie really works is in the action sequences and the interaction between the Ranger and Tonto. Oddly though for a Disney film, this is not appropriate for young children. The PG-13 rating is easily earned. William Fichtner plays a convincing and scary villain — the unscrupulous

outlaw Butch Cavendish. Fans of the classic TV series will note sequences edited to the iconic William Tell Overture.

Your Tarotgram and Horoscope

July 7 – 13, 2013

Events: New Moon in Cancer (8th), Mars enters Cancer (13th) Aries (March 21-April 19)

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Think outside the box as you’re considering long-term life patterns. The future is beckoning but memories about the past churn your emotions, evoking ghosts and fears. After Thursday, you can put memories aside and exert greater control over your choices and decisions about the future.

There are obstacles to attaining your greatest hopes for the future. It’s easy to get discouraged. Cash your reality check and review your options after Thursday. It may be that methods, not the goal, are the problem. Saturday brings inspiring conversations.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Others nudge you toward a particular result. Is it what you want? Identity props limit your choices. Possessiveness, pride, vanity, or fears of change hobble your thinking. On Wednesday, a friend helps you understand what’s obsolete. Tackle major projects on Saturday.

If current associations aren’t generating pride or confidence, then “Houston, we have a problem!”The desire to manifest your full potential is compelling. Relationships can distract you from breaking out of a rut. Determination and focus increase sharply on Saturday.

Gemini (May 21-June 21)

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

Critical decisions about money, work, people or possessions seem urgent as the week begins. Fuzzy thinking or distractions can stymie this process. Take your time. Important perspectives are clarified after Wednesday. You can act with more confidence on Saturday.

It’s tough to have champagne tastes on a beer budget, or keep faith when the future is uncertain. Fears/anxieties loom large as the week starts. Leverage your extensive network to find what you’re seeking. A worthy target for your arrows is around the corner; don’t give up.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

The new moon encourages inner reflection: Who are you? And where are you going? Matters connected with work and family can obscure your personal agenda. Reconsider options on Friday afternoon. Moving forward with confidence will be easy on Saturday.

Material realities can hamper emotional imperatives. Relationships and family matters are a primary focus this week, but these situations can be confusing. It’s easier to sort things out after Friday. Saturday brings definite action — you can move mountains.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Events from 14 years ago resurface. You’re older and wiser — the trick is to apply what you’ve learned to current situations. Use your resources carefully and avoid impulsive decisions midweek. The past is important, but it need not dominate the present or the future.

You’re entering a new cycle in the workplace, personal processes, or health concerns. Taking a step forward involves taking a step backward. Egotistical people create roadblocks or impose limitations. Ignore the drama. You’re enormously productive after Friday. Hop to it!

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Careful planning helps you achieve goals, but future results may be vague or uncertain. A thoughtless comment undermines confidence midweek. Don’t fall for that ploy! Retain your power of self-determination. You’ll get a gold stamp on your choices in the near future.

Love and children stir up memories of the past. Someone close to you experiences unavoidable hardships, but outcomes need not be tragic. Exercise free will. Matters improve on Friday through coordinated effort, and a “Monday morning quarterback” arrives on Saturday.

CARLSON’S CRITTERS

A home for Achilles and Lilly Achilles is a 1-year-old male boxer mix. The Toledo Area Humane Society (TAHS) agreed to help him find a home because his owners did not have time to spend with such a young dog. Achilles is a peppy boy with really long legs. He would love an active home with an owner who will take him for long walks every day, and give him the love and attention that a happy dog deserves. When he is excited, he will swing his tail around like a whip, so it is best if you make sure that all of your breakables are put someplace high. Achilles may be too energetic for small children and would fit best in a home with older teenagers and adults. Achilles loves other dogs and will enjoy going to a home with another canine companion. Achilles has been neutered, examined by a TAHS staff veterinarian, is current on his vaccinations and is microchipped. Lilly is a 1-year-old female silver and white shorthaired tiger. TAHS took her in as a stray and offered her safe shelter until she can find a new home. Lilly is a beautiful kitty. She has bright green eyes, which look very striking with her silvery coat. She is timid around new people but in gentle hands she is sure to blossom. She will need a patient owner who will give her the time she needs to become comfortable in her new home. Lilly is a calm kitty searching for a quiet home. She would be perfect for a retired owner in need of a calm companion. Lilly has been spayed, examined by a TAHS staff veterinarian, is current on her vaccinations, and is microchipped. Stop by and visit with Lilly and her other adoptable friends at the TAHS.
