KickStart update

T

here has been a tremendous response to the idea for KickStart Toledo, and we are working on making it a reality. The concept was borrowed from KickStart Columbus, where the Columbus City Council and several community development organizations sponsored a contest and awarded free downtown office space for a year. The call to establish a similar program in Toledo garnered some inspired responses on Facebook and Twitter. We also received calls of support from local Realtors and elected officials such as Toledo City Councilwoman Paula Hicks-Hudson. That led to a meeting between Toledo Free Press and three people very much invested in the idea: Artist, activist and restauranteur Dustin Hostetler, W. Gene Powell, president of Spoke LLC and cofounder of Seed Coworking, and AnThomas F. Pounds neliese Grytafey, manager of Economic and Community Development Institute. It was agreed to pursue available spaces, utilizing our Realtor contacts. But that is where we hit our first stumbling block. We are looking for spaces but do not have definitions as to what those spaces might contain. Our Realtor friends understandably require a definition of need before they can show any property. It was Powell who moved the conversation forward. “I understand the desire to follow a traditional route of property walkthroughs, but this is not a traditional route to kickstarting a business,” he wrote in an email. “Therefore, we need to take a leap of faith, be imaginative, and be willing to waste some time to scout spaces in order to imagine the possibilities (e.g. ‘Hey, Toledo! This would make a great wine bar!’). In order to get buy-in from would-be thought/ financial investors, we have to pre-package the spaces as well as the potential business concepts. “The rule of thumb I’ve subscribed to is that only 5 percent of the population can visualize. We have to do the work for them if this is to go anywhere. “This is a model that’s taking off in Detroit. The difference is that Detroit is creating pop-up shops that may not be sustainable. Our goal is to create ‘clusters of interest,’ populate them with passionate business owners who held back because they thought they couldn’t afford it, and build momentum on their successes.” So, help us drive this and determine what is next. We have thoughtful people and professional resources; we need to bring them together and, as the idea suggests, KickStart Toledo. Email or call us so we can keep the momentum going. O Thomas F. A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com n MILLER CONTINUED FROM 3 She was sturdy, blue, as fast as anything with pedals, and I named her after the fastest vehicle I could think of — The Millennium Falcon. “Star Wars” was barely a year old, and it filled my imagination and playtime. I carefully applied stickers to the bike from the red series of Topps “Star Wars” cards — one of the Falcon soaring through the galaxy, one labeled “Han and Chewbacca” and a third of the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. The stickers were undoubtedly duplicates in my collection, as I prized the full set of cards and stickers I collected from dime purchases at Blanton’s and the Rexall Drugs in “downtown” Walbridge and never would have broken up the set. I must have ridden that bike for thousands of miles, heedless and helmetless, through our Walbridge neighborhood, around the Clinton and Clayton street loop and down S. Main Street. Her bell was a dinky little chime, but to my ears, it sounded like a powerful laser cannon aimed at the Empire’s evil agents. I would pedal faster and faster, expecting the wheels to leave the ground any moment, to propel me through the atmosphere, past the clouds and into deep space. It seems inconceivable now that parents would let a child just take off for the day with no cellphone to check in, for eight hours or more, but it was a different world then, with less awareness of and attention to the dangers of perversion that keep children in virtual backyard prisons today. Most often, my destination was between Wilber and E. Union streets to my best friend John Bleau’s house, where a summer day would be spent playing ball, listening to records and splashing in a backyard pool. The Falcon carried me there, never once failing to transport me through what seemed like a universe of open space and freedom. I would pull into John’s yard and rest the Falcon in the shade, knowing it would be there when it was time to go home. For several summers, I cherished that bike, keeping it clean and oiled and carefully storing it in the shed every winter. Its first damage came from a confrontation with three bullies outside Blanton’s. I do not recall what started the fight but I have a clear memory of scuffling with them, being knocked down, not hurt, but panicking when they grabbed the Falcon and began pounding on her seat to bend it, kicking at the chain guard and laying her on her side to stomp on and bend the rear tire rim. They had not landed any significant punches on me, and as I was never much of a fighter, I certainly had not yet caused them any harm. But I

welled with rage when they attacked my bike, and I know at least one of them left the scene with a bloodied nose and another left large sections of his forearm skin on the sidewalk. I pushed the wobbling Falcon home, crying, grieving at her damage and shaking from the post-adrenaline letdown. The bike was eventually fixed, although she never rode quite the same. The Falcon continued to serve me well, through subsequent moves that accompanied my father’s descent into alcoholism and his eventual abandonment. The rust grew on her visibly and uncontrollably, her deterioration echoing the slow collapse of our family. I insisted on taking that bike with me as our family slipped from Walbridge to a tiny apartment in Northwood to a sudden and culture shockinducing move to Toledo’s South Side. She was sitting in a hallway storage area on the July 5, 1985 night our apartment building caught fire and burned to a husk. The last time I saw her, she was a blackened frame with melted tires. The “Star Wars” stickers had long ago faded and peeled but there was no sign of them at all. Her chain hung loose, her handlebars were charred, her bell was a lump of fused metal, silent forever.

Spokes of freedom

I sat up on the grass, mildly shaken but in one piece. My new bike lay on the sidewalk, unharmed. My sons pedaled over to make sure I was OK, my 4-year-old’s training wheels rattling on the sidewalk. I needed to show the boys the importance of getting right back on the bike after a fall, so I did, knowing I would be sore later but making no accommodation for that at the time. I straightened my helmet and started pedaling. The three of us slowly made our way around the block, watching for cars in driveways and pretending championship racing was at stake. My boys and I rode under a mid-May blue sky, pedaling to nowhere, enjoying the ride. Their bike bells are dinky little chimes, but as my sons rang them, I could see in their eyes that they were imagining far more adventurous sounds. It did not occur to me to name my new bike. But as we rode, I felt like that 12-year-old boy again, expecting the wheels to leave the ground any moment, to propel me through the atmosphere, past the clouds and into deep space. O Michael S. TPS disingenuous with compliance scores

I

was heavily quoted in the May 19 article “TPS special education compliance scores improve,” written by John P. McCartney. After reading the entire article I became incensed that it contained information that should have been released and reported to the public three or more years ago. It is disingenuous for Toledo Public Schools (TPS) to release this information, way after the fact, and not to do it in a public forum. It does not instill security in those concerned about the state of education in Toledo. If TPS was found to be out of compliance three years ago to the point that a state takeover of its special education program was possible, this should have been communicated to the public in language that the public could understand. Being an advocate for children and having had special education experiences and struggles with my own children, I’m not sure what some of the terms mean myself. I attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings with parents. “Child Find,” I thought, was the definition of the process of identifying children in hospital

or homebound situations that involve school-aged chronically ill children. Now I find out “Child Find” is basically finding and identifying students for special education services under Ohio Revised Code 3301-51-03. What is interesting is that “child find” turned into “child lost,” when the district underwent to the K-8 transformation. Many IEPs, evaluations and special education students were Twila lost in the transformation. But because parents aren’t aware of the importance of an IEP (because they haven’t been schooled in the language) and don’t know where to turn when their child is struggling, these losses were pushed under the rug. Other significant terms such as “delivery of services,” “least restrictive environment,” “continuum of services,” “academic coaches” and “embedded” — what do they mean to a parent and the community? A “cheat sheet” was created for teachers, but where is the cheat sheet for par-

ents and the public? How do we know what to look for in an IEP and how do we know if it is being properly implemented? TPS is great for handing out “Whose Idea Is This? A Parent’s Guide to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA),” but not very good at explaining to the parent what this booklet entails and how it should be used. Even those PAGE involved in educating students don’t use this handbook. If they did, they would be compliant with laws governing special education students. What happens to the children who were damaged by this 30 percent effective noncompliance? I worked with many of those parents during this three-year period, whose children have been damaged by this noncompliance situation. These children were put into a whirlwind of noncompliance but the parents didn’t know, nor did I as their rep-

resentative. After reading the May 19 article I feel that I let these parents down because I allowed the district to hoodwink them and myself. Furthermore, there has been no transparency. Absolutely none! What should have been done is that TPS should have held a news conference and announced that they were in a situation of noncompliance and asked the public to support the effort to pull them out of the noncompliance category. After all, the general public had their children involved in this situation. How did this hiding of information help the students? TPS was not alone in this conspiracy because the Ohio Department of Education bears some responsibility in not being transparent also. Just like the “scrubbing” incident, a district being “significantly” below compliance should have been conveyed to the public. What was the “TPS corrective plan”? Who is monitoring the plan? Do not the public and parents, especially parents of special education students, deserve to know what the deficiencies are/were and what the corrective plan was to fix it? I think we

A Different High School for a Different World

Tuition-Free College Preparatory High School

do. We provide the students and the money involved in the experiment. Who pays for this? We all do, in different ways. When the district that you live in has failed its children, the biggest loss is to the public, in the way of lost revenue that creates a domino effect. Property values go down, jobs leave, there is a brain drain where the brightest and the best leave the area, residents are disgruntled and unsatisfied and Toledo is no longer a city with Pride. Even TPS suffers because when you lose students, you lose revenue. Has Karla Spangler stood up to the Toledo Federation of Teachers? I don’t think so. I also don’t think that her hiring is unethical so much as it was a last-ditch effort to right a sinking ship, a ship that will continue to sink until TPS realizes that parents and the public are not the enemy. We are the holders of the prize, whether abled, disabled or gifted. When you mistreat one group, they all feel the pain. O Twila Page is secretary of the AfricanAmerican Parents Association and a longtime advocate for special education students and their parents.

The harsh reality of teenage drinking

for you, you still have the chance to make a difference in your life and in the lives of others. If we could ask you to remember just one thing from this letter, it would be to have fun without drinking. Be a leader and make it cool not to drink. You can do it. We know you can. And lastly, but most importantly, don’t drink and drive or ride with someone who has been drinking. If you could feel for only a brief moment the extreme anguish and pain that we as a family feel over Brian’s death every moment of every day, then you would understand what drinking can cost you and your family. Please think about it. Think about what Brian lost, all his hopes, dreams and ultimately his life, as a result of alcohol. Please stay safe and don’t put your family through what we are going through.

By Brian and Cindy Hoeflinger Special to Toledo Free Press

T

o the graduating class of 2013: Our son Brian Hoeflinger died in a tragic car accident on Feb. 2 at the young age of 18. He was a kid just like you who had hopes and aspirations of going to college and having a full happy life. On the night he died, he was at a party with friends drinking vodka and ended up driving intoxicated. I remember the phone call we received late that night when we learned Brian had been in a car accident. The sickening feeling in the pit of your stomach and the frantic racing of your heart when you don’t know if your child has been hurt or if he is even still alive. When we arrived at the hospital, we were told Brian was dead. The image of our son lying there on a cold gurney dead in trauma room 21 at Toledo Hospital will never leave my mind as long as I live. His lifeless body lying there almost as though he were asleep, wishing he were only asleep but all to well knowing he was dead and never coming back home with us. It is the worst singular feeling we have ever experienced in our lives. The second worst feeling was telling our other three children at home about an hour later that their older brother Brian was dead and gone forever. We took them back to the hospital to see Brian. It was heartbreaking to watch Kevin, Julie and Christie say goodbye to their big brother forever that night. That life we had with Brian is over and an unwelcome new life without Brian has now taken its place. We tell you this story because Brian could be any one of you, if you choose to drink. And we say choose, because it is your choice and nobody else’s. Once you take your first drink of alcohol, you are not making the decisions, the alcohol is. You are putting yourself and others at risk for injury or, even worse, dying like Brian. Now you may say that Brian was stupid and not a responsible person. You would never make that mistake and it could never happen to you. Well, Brian used to say that too and look how it turned out for him. Let us tell you, Brian was not a stupid person.

The Hoeflinger family

Brian Hoeflinger He had a 4.5 GPA, 32 ACT score, was a 5-handicap golfer, and was accepted to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is where he wanted to go to college. Brian always made good decisions until alcohol was involved. You see, you can’t make good decisions when you drink alcohol. No matter how much you think you can, you can’t. Brian proved that. He is now frozen in time at age 18 with no chance to move forward or make a difference. As for you, you are very much alive and able to make your destiny what you want. This is a very defining time in your life because at this moment you are able to choose the path in life you wish to follow. At this moment, you have the chance to change the way others think by taking a stand against drinking, especially drinking and driving. You are able to define who you are and to make a difference now. Be a leader and make it cool not to drink. It is a privilege to be alive and to be able to make a difference in the lives of others. Brian lost that chance with a bad decision but we’re sure he wouldn’t make that same mistake twice. But for Brian, there is no second chance. No chance to redo things. As

Brian would have graduated June 6 from Ottawa Hills High School. He had attended St. John’s Jesuit High School for three years; their commencement was May 23. His elementary school friends from St. Joe’s Sylvania are graduating from schools all over the area. Many of his friends from Toledo Junior Golf are also graduating. You may be one of those friends, or know someone who knew Brian. As you are going through the fun and excitement of these final days, preparing for prom, graduation ceremonies and the parties of all your friends, think of us. There are no prom pictures to take, no corsage to match to a date’s dress. During graduation, we sat in the audience, not the proud parents of a wonderful son accepting his diploma with his classmates, but the parents choking back tears of grief and regret that he was not there. We are the grieving father who will never golf again with his beloved son or be able to watch golf on TV without a hole in his heart. We are the mother suffering over the loss of the opportunity to excitedly plan the graduation party, shop for bedding for the dorm room and cry when she says goodbye in the fall. We are the siblings mourning over the death of the brother they all looked up to. For us, this is the harsh reality of teenage drinking. O

MEDIA WATCH

The Hoeflinger family wants to save your life

M

ay 26, 2013, is the date I never imagined would arrive — the day my oldest daughter and first love, Mackenzie, graduates from high school. I remember doing the math when she was born; I was going to be 37 years old, and how far away that felt. She is graduating exactly 20 years after I did, and thankfully we are two different people. This entire school year has gone by too fast. I saw her cheer on the sidelines for the last time, witnessed her final and best performance as Nancy in “Oliver!” on Genoa High School’s stage and followed the ups and downs of watching her try to get into the BGSU musical theater program to pursue her dreams. The stress, the buildup, the anticipation ... and I have been blessed to have her alive and well through the entire process. I am a lucky one; Brian and Cindy Hoeflinger Jeremy BAUMHOWER were not. Last year, my column “Congratulations ... now don’t be stupid,” was penned for the graduating class of 2012. I used the space Toledo Free Press gave me to ask the senior class to just survive. I encouraged them to not drink and drive, tried to offer solutions for those who did drink and warned them of all those before who had graduated and died tragically a short time later. It is really easy to understand — you just started driving at the age of 16 and maybe you just started drinking, illegally. This inexperienced combination is as deadly as it can get. The key is to simply survive through the graduation season, so all of your hard work is not wasted by one bad choice. On Feb. 2, Brian Hoeflinger, a senior at Ottawa Hills High School, died as a result of drinking and driving. I had never met Brian, but I coach some Ottawa Hills seventh-graders and saw various pictures of the boys honoring his memory at basketball games and on Facebook. The tragedy of his death was apparent on their faces and homemade T-shirts, it hit home. I was one degree from this boy, his family and this tragedy ... until I picked up the phone. I heard Brian and Cindy Hoeflinger were trying to share a message with promgoers about the dangers of making a bad choice and its potentially awful consequences. Just 100 days after they lost their oldest son, they were trying to save others while sharing his dreams and tragic ending. I wanted to offer Brian’s parents my column space for their message, but I wanted it for the classes graduating, not just prom. I wanted my daughter and her friends to read it. My phone conversations with Cindy, gave me an insight into Brian’s life and his family’s life now. I shared my fears of being a parent with a woman who was living my worst nightmare. I heard her voice crack numerous times while describing how troll comments about her son’s death left on various news sites wrecked her day. Her pain is so raw and yet she is so motivated to help others, it is nothing short of heroic. I was inspired by her candidness and her desire to save lives, all while sharing her ongoing pain of losing a child. Brian and Cindy Hoeflinger’s strength and character serves as an inspiration. Their courageous message to others while their hearts are shattered is beyond noble. Their pain is the most relatable suffering any parent could ever feel and they are sharing their sorrow in hopes of saving just one of our children. That is the very definition of a hero. The Hoeflingers are fighting through their personal misery so that Brian’s death does not go in vain, a war I believe they are winning. If you are graduating high school this year or anytime soon, may their letter on this page be your last reading assignment of the 2012-13 school year. It may be the most important thing you ever read. One bad choice stole a family’s dreams ... please don’t let one steal yours. O Find Jeremy Baumhower on Facebook or Twitter @jeremytheproduc.

EDUCATION

TPS investment to generate $500,000 in yearly energy savings By John P. McCartney Toledo Free Press Staff Writer jpmccartney@toledofreepress.com

The Toledo Public Schools (TPS) Board of Education is expected to approve a resolution May 28 that James Gant, TPS chief business manager, said would generate $500,000 a year in energy cost savings. The board is expected to give Gant the authority to spend $3 million to purchase 26 transformers and control systems to replace its current provider, FirstEnGANT ergy Solutions. “We’ve already moved forward with the bidding process,” Gant said May 17. “What the board will approve is the actual bid.” Bids were opened May 22, and Gant said U.S. Utilities “presented the lowest responsible responsive bid. The board will say ‘yea’ or ‘nay’ to that bid.” Gant said he expects the transformers to cost $2 million and the control system to cost $1 million. The cost of each transformer will vary, depending on its size, although Gant said the average price of one transformer is approximately $83,000. Transformers will be custom-built to the specifications of the building they will service. “Not every school building will get a transformer,” Gant said. “Some do not make sense to do, given where it’s at and its size. I would be surprised if Edgewater [Elementary School]

were to get one because it’s a smaller building.” TPS currently purchases its utilities — electricity, gas and water — from the area’s largest sources identified by a consulting firm TPS has under contract, Gant said. The largest energy companies the district does business with are American Electric Power (AEP) Energy, Duke Energy and FirstEnergy, Gant said. “We’ll revisit all that kind of stuff,” he said. “I think that’s a part of this whole process — to look at all aspects our energy and utilities perspective. We need to make sure that we’re doing that effectively.”

Energy conservation

Ohio school districts can be their own energy providers under House Bill (HB) 264, also called the Energy Conservation Program (ECP), passed in 1985. However, the 129th Ohio General Assembly’s revision of HB 264 in 2012 is what has allowed for projects like TPS’ current planned upgrade of its facilities. Gant said he’s enthused when he thinks about the prospective savings TPS will see almost immediately. Board of Education member Bob Vasquez said that decision made common sense. “It’s important to keep that fund funded,” Vasquez said. “We have to be prepared for upkeep. When we build a school, we can’t expect it to last forever. It’s really important to have that fund so we can keep those schools in good repair.” BOE member Lisa Sobecki said board members have an obligation to be “smart cautious” with the district’s nonrenewing money.

“We’re limited with what we can and can’t do with capital dollars like the 034 [fund]. They’re limited dollars, period. So if we extend them, we won’t have money coming back, but we still have buildings we have to maintain through the language that we went into this OSFC project with.”

Three phases

Gant said this energy conservation project will be completed in three phases. “The first phase is getting the infrastructure in place: the transformers, controls, metering and lighting,” he said. “The second phase is being in a position to make the changes necessary within the district to reduce energy [consumption] in a simple way — things like cutting off lights and/or managing how we do our buildings. That’s going to reduce costs in itself. “The third phase is then going out to our staff, our students and our folks and showing them how they can help in the reduction of energy [use]. “It’s cost reduction. But absolutely it could be education. If we have the ability, or we do a good job explaining to our folks that this is a reduction [in cost] or a savings to our general fund that could be utilized for other things, I’m hoping that we can get them inspired.”

Transformers

Gant said the first phase will see transformers installed on each school building’s property. “We’re not talking about the transformers on poles 30 feet up in the air,

but the ones in the green rectangular boxes on the ground,” Gant said. “People won’t see any difference. The transformers will be exactly where they are right now. In the corner of a property, you’ll see a green transformer (large metal box). Right now they’re owned by Toledo Edison. Soon, they’ll be owned by us.” Gant said that during the summer, FirstEnergy will remove its hardware and TPS will install its transformers where FirstEnergy’s previously sat. Doug Colafella, head of external communications for FirstEnergy, said, “We’re helping them. They’re installing their own heavy duty transformers capable of taking the feed directly out of our high voltage system. “When that occurs and you become a primary customer and we’re feeding electricity directly into the customer’s own transformer, they take the transformer equipment out that belongs to Toledo Edison. They put their own in they had to invest in and now they’re getting fed by the high voltage primary circuit of our system, but they’re still our customer. “We’ve worked closely with the school district to allow them to pay a more attractive rate. “This is the type of project that we work collaboratively with our customer. The customer has to make an investment on the front end to install their own transformers, which can be a significant investment, but that investment pays off because the customer takes advantage of a much lower price per kwh for electric distribution service. It puts them on a different rate schedule — a primary rate

schedule. But they remain a customer of Toledo Edison.”

Dramatic change

Gant said he anticipates dramatic change in a relatively short period of time. “I can definitely see, a year from now, that our conversation’s a little different now that we’ve moved on to the second phase. How we utilize it and how we’re able to show taxpayers or the schools some of the things I’m talking about. “It will really happen that quickly. I don’t know what other folks are doing, but from what I can tell, I think we can be a leader in this area — in both schools and the community — for an institution this size. I’m looking forward to it. I see that as a challenge.” O

“C’mon, Grace!” “Good job, Taylor! Keep going!” The encouraging shouts, mixed with plenty of high-fives, rang out recently at a park near Fort Meigs Elementary School in Perrysburg, where a group of girls in the local chapter of Girls on the Run (GOTR) meets twice a week after school. Wearing matching pink shirts — and occasionally donning costume items like boas, capes and masquerade-style face masks — the group worked through several running and team-building games with the guidance of three volunteer coaches. GOTR combines running with an interactive curriculum to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in preteen girls. Topics discussed include bullying, peer pressure and healthy body image with a focus on positive physical, emotional, mental and social development, said Lindsay McKibben, council director

of GOTR of Northwest Ohio. “Women face social pressures at all ages; even elementary-age girls face it. It’s starting at that young of an age,” McKibben said. “The program really spoke to me in teaching girls some key core values at a young age that are really beneficial as they go through seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th grade and even later on as adults.” The nonprofit organization is active in more than 200 cities in the United States and Canada. GOTR of Northwest Ohio started in 2012 and currently has 13 teams of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at 11 sites: Monclova Elementary and Whitehouse Primary Schools, Fort Meigs Elementary, Toth Elementary, Woodland Elementary and St. Rose Catholic School and Parish in Perrysburg, Stranahan Elementary and St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Parish in Sylvania, Gesu Catholic School and Parish in Toledo and McGregor Elementary and Greenwood Elementary in Washington Local Schools. n GIRLS CONTINUES ON 12

12 Community n GIRLS CONTINUED FROM 10 The first few weeks of the 10week program center on building a positive self-image, including speaking positively of yourself and being respectful to yourself, McKibben said. Next, lessons focus on building a positive environment, such as choosing good friends, how to handle social, peer and media pressure and how gossip and bullying can hurt people. The final phase is centered around giving back, with each team planning and executing a community service project. Girls are welcome to repeat the program and girls who came in as shy third-graders will often return the next session as confident leaders, said Heather Hayter, a GOTR coach at Fort Meigs Elementary. Hayter is a kindergarten teacher’s assistant at the school and her daughter is a GOTR participant. “It’s really important for people to understand how sensitive girls of this age group are to the need to develop a healthy self-image,” Hayter said. “Girls on the Run gives them the tools to develop that image in a positive manner because it addresses the whole individual. They have the tools not just to know what it means to be healthy physically and not fall prey to what they see in the media, but also what it means to be healthy emotionally and socially. Those things are huge.” The benefits extend beyond the girls who directly participate in the program, said coach Taylor Newlove, a Bowling Green State University student. “What these girls are learning here doesn’t just affect these 10 girls; it affects these girls’ friends and their friends because they are sharing all these lessons and skills,” Newlove said. GOTR teaches the Stop, Breathe, Listen and Respond (SBLR) method, said Sarah Gabel, program director for GOTR of Northwest Ohio. “It teaches the girls to be thoughtful in their responses and not just say the first thing that’s on their mind,” Gabel said. Courtney Besancon, a 10-year-old fourth-grader at Fort Meigs Elementary, said she uses the SBLR method frequently. “I’ve learned when you talk about someone else you can’t take it back,” Besancon said.

open to the public. Girls on the Run participants will not be timed, but other runners will be. “Each girl has a running buddy, which is someone who will run or walk the whole entire 5K with them so we know every girl is safe and has someone cheering for her and available,” Gabel said. “It’s something to experience. It’s a really neat and emotional day, at least for me. I cry every time.” Ten-year-old Layla Malhas, a fifth-grader at Fort Meigs Elementary, said she didn’t really like running when she joined GOTR last year — but now she’s hoping to join the track team in junior high. “Once I was with my friends and my coaches were very nice to me, it just felt normal and was fun,” Malhas said. “It’s just fun to do because I hang out with all my friends

and it just encourages me to stay fit and taught me a lot about handling tough situations.” Although several friends decided not to repeat the program, Malhas said she wanted to. “Running just gives me time to think and to — I know this sounds weird, but — to reflect on life,” she said. She ran her first 5K last fall and will run again on June 1. “It was tough, but it was fun in the end to have achieved that,” Malhas said. GOTR is funded by grants, donations and participant fees, which are set on a sliding scale based on household income. No one is turned away based on their inability to pay, McKibben said. She said the group is looking to expand into more schools, including Toledo Public Schools.

“It’s a program we want every girl in Northwest Ohio to be able to participate in if they want to,” McKibben said. “We don’t want this to just be a program for girls who live in the suburbs. It’s a program that can benefit every young girl.” Malhas said she’s happy that Girls on the Run is looking to expand into other schools — and possibly even branch out to a program for sixth through eighth-graders called Girls on Track. “That’s good. Every elementary school should have it for girls to get involved,” Malhas said. “I’m going to be really upset about leaving because it’s such a nice experience to have and it taught me a lot.”

The idea was inspired by actresses such as Demi Lovato and “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke, who have posted public photos of themselves without makeup. “The message we’re teaching our girls is to be proud of yourself, respect yourself and you’re beautiful just the way you are, so to showcase some of the successes and awesome impacts adult women are having on the community that have nothing to do with their looks, is great,” McKibben said. “We loved the idea and the message that he is trying to share.” For more information, visit www. girlsontherunnwohio.org. On May 20, someone using an allegedly fake Facebook account shared a post accusing a Toledo man of raping three girls and his son. Two days later, the post had been shared more than 26,000 times — however, Toledo Police say the post isn’t true. Chad Michael Lesko, the accused, said he believes the Nicole Mccarthy account the post originated from actually belongs to the mother of his son. “I got a hold of her and I said, ‘Why are you lying on Facebook? You know I haven’t done this. I haven’t seen my son in two years,’” he said. The post, which includes Lesko’s picture, claims he is wanted by the Toledo Police Department. Sgt. Joe Heffernan said he believes the post is false and there aren’t any active rape or sexual imposition cases in Lucas County against Lesko that he knows of. He said he could not check a nationwide database without probable cause. A Facebook message from Mccarthy’s account to a Toledo Free Press account said police had come to her and others’ doors to say that Lesko was wanted for rape. The message also said that Lesko has seen his son recently. However, the message ended saying, “I did want [sic] I had to do because I thought it was true. I am sorry for the false accusations but I thought it was true.” The account appeared to have been deactivated shortly after the message was sent. Lesko said both he and his adoptive mother have received threats because of the post. “I’ve been recognized a lot. I’ve been threatened, [with people saying], ‘Don’t walk down my street no more,’” he said. Lesko said he has reached out to Facebook and has not heard back. As of noon May 22, the original post had been removed from Facebook. “I reported the picture. I had friends report the picture,” he said. “I keep on reporting the picture.” The post also hurt Lesko for personal reasons, he said. As a child, Lesko was molested by his father, he said. “It hit me pretty hard and I’m all like, ‘Why the heck

would I follow in my father’s footsteps?’” he said. Lesko alleges that the woman he believes is posing as McCarthy is mad because he broke up with a friend of her’s, Lesko said, and also because he couldn’t give her as much money this month as he usually does. “She told me, ‘I’m gonna get you back for this,’ and ever since then it’s been hell,” he said. Lesko plans to hire an attorney and go to the police once he gathers more information, he said. Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Bates said Lesko could potentially take legal action against the poster. “For one thing, there could be a civil remedy for damaging the reputation of this person,” she said. “It’s a pretty terrible thing to say about someone if it’s isn’t true.” Heffernan said he doesn’t believe there could be criminal charges against the poster, although Lesko could have “a very good civil case.” “It’s not illegal to spread a rumor,” Heffernan said At press time, Facebook has not returned Toledo Free Press’ request for comment. Bennett Management appoints new CEO By Evan Brune Toledo Free Press Staff Writer ebrune@toledofreepress.com

Jimmy Harmon, a 27-year veteran of the restaurant industry, has been named CEO of Bennett Management Corp. and Tony Packo’s Toledo. The announcement follows the May 8 death of former CEO Bob Bennett. “Business-wise, everything will HARMON continue on,” said Beverly Benner, vice president of administration and marketing for Bennett Management. “Of course, we were all saddened by his passing, but Bob founded a company and his visions for that company, as well as the Tony Packo’s entity, will continue forward, in large part due to all the employees who have worked with him over the years. He was a mentor to all of us, especially to his top management.” According to a news release from the corporation, Harmon, who holds a master’s degree in management and organization and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, was most recently vice president of operations, training and franchising for Einstein Noah Restaurant Group in Denver. “I’m very excited about it. It’s a great opportunity for me. I started from the bottom and worked my way up,” Harmon said. Harmon began his career at Taco Bell while studying at the University of Colorado. He started as a team member and advanced through various management positions, ending

as a manager for multiple restaurants while finishing graduate school. Harmon earned management positions at the Wendy’s/Arby’s Group and By The Rockies, which manages Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s. While working at the Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Harmon was asked to meet Bennett. “I met Bob, and he was happy and healthy, and we really hit it off,” Harmon said. Following Bennett’s death, Harmon began transitioning into his new position as CEO. “Right now, it’s just getting in and meeting everyone. A lot’s happened over the last couple of years. I’m just getting around and asking questions,” Harmon said. “Everybody’s been great. I met with Tony Packo Jr. and Tony Packo III, and I had a follow-up with the staff. Everyone was fantastic.” Harmon said he hopes to understand the vision for Burger King and Tony Packo’s before moving forward. “Both require a little different strategy. Packo’s requires a little bit of growth,” Harmon said. Benner said Harmon is the right choice for the company. “We’re all grieved by Mr. Bennett’s passing, but we welcome [Harmon] into our business with open arms. I feel, from the short time I’ve known him, he will move our company forward,” Benner said. She said she sees a bright future for Bennett Management. “Mr. Bennett made the right choice,” Benner said. “[Harmon’s] experience and talents, his education, will contribute to the growth and visions of Bennett Management.” O

The idea behind SkyLife Technology, a new disaster relief system invented and operated in Toledo, is simple, said President Andy Stuart. However, the work and science behind the new product aren’t simple feats, he said. “SkyLife in and of itself not that complicated a concept; it’s just new,” Stuart said, later adding, “The genius is in its simplicity.” Thousands of packets, which hold up to eight ounces each, can be placed in boxes, which are delivered by plane to disaster-stricken people who may not have access to roads. The flaps on top of the boxes are not sealed and a small parachute is anchored to the bottom of the box. Once the box comes out of the plane, “The wind grabs the parachute and as the parachute is being yanked by the wind, because it’s anchored to the bottom, it turns the box upside down and with the flaps loose, the force yanks on the box and it jerks and all the flaps open and the packs fall out,” Stuart said. Stuart and inventor Jeff Potter of Potter Technologies are currently at a U.N. conference in Geneva to promote SkyLife. They are slated to return around May 24. On May 13, SkyLife held a debut celebration, which included speeches by Rep. Marcy Kaptur and Mayor Mike Bell.

Working in the garage

The idea for SkyLife originated after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Potter said. “As a former United States Marine, I knew our country could do much better to help victims of disasters,” Potter said in an email. In January 2010, Potter and some of his team began working on SkyLife in his father and chief engineer Terry’s garage as not to disrupt Potter Technology’s work flow. Stuart, then regional market manager of Clear Channel in Toledo and longtime friend of Potter’s, came on as SkyLife’s president in December 2012.

Gary L. RATHBUN

New highs, new hedge

A

lmost every day, the market is hitting new highs and with each new high, the market seems a little scarier. Some of us who study the psychology of individual investors in the market are starting to see uneasiness out there. People don’t want to get out for fear they will miss some more gain, yet they are concerned that the market will drop before they are able to get out and preserve their value.

n

Andy Stuart, president of SkyLife, holds one of ITS disaster relief packets, which can contain up to eight ounces.

At the grand debut, Kaptur joked, “I think that this particular microphone suits Andy Stuart much, much better than his old one.” Stuart said there are some similarities between his new and old jobs. “The idea is to introduce concepts and build relationships and trust, which is something that I’ve prided myself on all around Northwest Ohio,” he said. SkyLife is necessary because when disaster relief supplies are delivered through large pallets, which drop down from planes, militants often steal the supplies, Stuart said. “In all these conflicts, it’s the same story. It’s the young men or the men with guns that control the supplies and it really is a bedeviling project for the relief agencies and the United Nations,” Stuart said. SkyLife aims to avoid this problem as the packets flutter down and are dispersed by the wind. Additionally, more than three packets at a time are hard to carry due to their slipperiness, Stuart added. “SkyLife is not judgmental about who gets the supplies. SkyLife is the

ultimate in democracy,” Stuart said. Getting supplies in the hands of needy people could also quell distress, Stuart said. “The panic sets in when they don’t have something to turn to,” he said.

Community of innovators

Kaptur, who had previously met with Stuart and Potter, applauded their efforts May 13. “God forbid that the Middle East or any other unquiet place on this Earth fester up again; imagine the millions of people that such an innovation could help. It comes as no surprise to those of us who have chosen to spend our lives in this great region that this innovation could happen here. This is a community of innovators,” she said. SkyLife could also bring hundreds of jobs to the region, Stuart said. “We intend to make it here. The great thing about SkyLife is it was invented here; it will be made here and it will be distributed from here [to] around the world,” he said. SkyLife has also partnered with BX Solutions, based at Toledo Express

Airport, for logistical support. Relief and government agencies can store SkyLife Technology, which has a shelflife of five years, in their warehouses for speedier deployment, Stuart said. He declined to give the price of SkyLife, but said it’s less expensive than what people are currently spending on disaster relief. SkyLife is privately funded, he also said. It’s up to the aid agencies to determine what goes in the packs, but the possibilities are numerous— food, Mylar sheets to limit exposure, water and sanitary and medical supplies. Power packs may even be possible in the future, Stuart said. Potter said, “Being able to develop continuity systems is increasingly the focus of disaster planning. SkyLife delivers rapid continuity, not just for food, water and shelter, but also access to information; SkyLife can deliver communication devices and the power to operate them. Also, SkyLife will devise and manufacture novel solutions to shelter that will be a major endeavor.” For more information, visit www. facebook.com/SkyLifeTechnology. O

What to do?

There are several ways to hedge a portfolio and minimize the effect of a market decline. Probably the most popular method of minimizing the effects of a downturn in the market is through the use of stop limits or trailing stops. To use these tools, program a computer to automatically sell your holding once it reaches a specific price. For example, if you owned Microsoft stock and it is trading at $34 a share, you can set a stop limit for $32.50 and if Microsoft shares reach this price, an automatic sell order will be placed to sell your shares. A trailing stop is similar but it is usually set at a percentage of the share price rather than a specific price. You could set your trailing stop at 5 percent of the current price and if the stock went down 5 percent, i.e., $32.30, then a sale would be triggered. As the stock moves up, the trailing stop follows at the same percentage. If the stock moved to $35, your trailing stop would automatically move to $33.25. The stops never move down unless you move them manually. n RATHBUN CONTINUES ON 18

Ollie’s bargain outlet is located at 5860 Lewis Ave., off of Alexis Road.

Ollie’s offers eclectic stock, low prices

By Paige Shermis

Toledo Free Press Staff Writer pshermis@toledofreepress.com

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, an eclectic discount big-box store, officially opened in Toledo on May 22. This is the chain’s first area location. The new store is located at 5860 Lewis Ave., Toledo, off of Alexis Road. The Toledo Ollie’s is the rapidly growing chain’s 138th store. The company was started in 1982 in Mechanicsburg, Penn., and has locations in 13 states, with 15 more stores opening this year. “The reason we can offer our terrific brand name products at such low, low prices unlike anywhere else is the fact that we shop all across America, and in other parts of the world, for great bargains from great retailers who have overstocks, from manufacturers who may have made too much product, another company maybe discontinuing merchandise or maybe distressed merchandise from a fire sale that is salable,” said Ollie’s Director of New Stores Dave Campbell. Ollie’s stocks a wide variety of merchandise, he said. “Ollie’s sells just about anything you can think of. You’ll see, if you look around our store, that we carry books, food, sporting goods, lawn and garden, furniture; we sell toys; we have clothing, and all at fabulous prices,” Campbell said. Peter Ries, team leader, agreed. “We have great value and unique items every single day, and it’s just a unique shopping experience. … You don’t know what you’re going to find, and it’s value in every area,” he said. Customer Mary Ann Hierholzer said that there was a difference between Ollie’s and other large retail locations. She added that Ollie’s seemed “a little

cheaper” than other merchandisers. Besides adding variety to the Toledo retail market, the new Ollie’s created 50 jobs, Ries said. The store’s grand opening took place 9 a.m. May 22 with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. Outside of the store, a beaming, mustachioed inflatable head of late vice president and company namesake Oliver “Ollie” Rosenberg silently greeted and enticed new customers. The inside of the location is plastered with cartoon caricatures of Rosenberg. Toward the front of the store is the “7 ½ Commandments of Ollie’s,” with the first commandment stating that the customer is always right. The store was bustling with customers eager to see the new store during the grand opening. “I just thought I’d check it out since it was something new,” Hierholzer said. Many in the crowd were also there to meet Gaylord Perry, an inductee

into the Baseball Hall of Fame and Cy Young award-winner who was available for autographs and pictures. Two-hundred-and-fifty meet-andgreet tickets were available on a firstcome, first-serve basis. “We do this quite frequently. … We’ll bring a celebrity to meet the community, and bring people into the store to meet them and see our great selection of merchandise,” Campbell said. Ollie’s success in obtaining good relationships with a wide variety of vendors comes from the company’s trustworthiness, Campbell said. “[Ollie’s has] all sorts of contacts with various vendors that know that Ollie’s is a great place to do business with. … We are very honest, and we pay our bills on time,” Campbell said. “Because of that, they come and find us when they have product that they need to get rid of. They know that we will take great care of them, and we will both get a good deal.” O

A little more sophisticated method of hedging is the use of put options. Keeping with the Microsoft example, suppose you wanted to make sure you received at least $33 a share between now and July. You could simply purchase a put option which obligates the seller of the option to pay you $34 a share regardless of the market price of the stock. If the price of Microsoft went to $20, you would still be able to sell your shares for $34. A put option is kind of like an insurance policy against the share price going down for a specific period of time. Like any other insurance policy there is a cost to this put. The cost might be 45 cents a share for the time frame we are talking about. If the stock drops, the price is very cheap and if the shares stay above $34, you purchased the insurance and didn’t need it. The further out you go with the put option, the more expensive it will become, since you are buying time as well as price protection. An even more sophisticated

method of hedging is called an equity collar. With this method you purchase a put option but you also sell a call against your holding as well. In essence, you “collar” the stock between two separate prices. For Microsoft shares, we may buy a put at $32.50 and sell a call at $37.50. With the stock currently around $34 or so, this effectively collars the stock between these two prices. Either you will get $32.50 if the stock falls $37.50 if the stock increases or keep the stock if it stays between the two prices. Any of the above is worth looking at with your adviser, especially if you think your holdings are at risk of going down or you want to lock in gains. O Gary L. hollywood casino toledo — year one

By Sarah Ottney

TOLEDO FREE PRESS MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

Hosting an outdoor summer concert series has been a goal of Hollywood Casino Toledo executives since the venue opened along the Maumee River almost a year ago, said General Manager Richard St. Jean. “We knew that entertainment would be successful in our H Lounge since the opening. We’ve had a lot of great bands and attracted just huge crowds,” St. Jean said. “Back when we were under ST. JEAN construction, we anticipated that kind of success and determined that the front lot would make a great riverfront venue. The outdoor concerts are obviously predicated by the success of our indoor free shows. From that, we decided to move forward.” Enter the Spotlight Summer Nights Concert Series. A covered stage will be set up on a parking lot for each show along with ground-level seating for 2,500 people and food and drink tents, said Keira Finnegan, Hollywood Casino Toledo advertising and promotions manager. First up is a night of Motown music with The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards and The Spinners, set for 8 p.m. May 24. Tickets are $45 and available at www. ticketweb.com. Also scheduled to perform is Air Supply on June 21 and LeAnn Rimes on July 5. Tickets to those shows are $30 each. All tickets are for general admission with first come, first serve seating starting at 6:30 p.m. Parking is free. Hot dogs, brats and alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks will be available. Attendees, who must be 21 or older, will be able to go in and out of the casino with a wristband. Many factors are taken into consideration when booking acts for the series, St. Jean said. “We look at our clientele. We look at our demographics and where they are coming from. We look at bands that have been successful regionally,” St. Jean said. “We have over half a dozen offers out to other bands as well, so our goal is to have ideally 10 shows this summer.” “These concerts will hopefully drive consumers that haven’t been to our venue before and just provide con-

tinued exposure, which is good for Hollywood Casino Toledo, but it’s also good for the city of Toledo,” St. Jean said. Richard Nachazel, president of Destination Toledo Convention and Visitors Bureau, agreed the series should be good for Toledo’s economy. “Many people will plan on not only coming to the casino and staying for the concert, but very possibly making it an overnight stay in Toledo, which means additional revenue of a hotel room, late night dinner, breakfast the next day,” Nachazel said. “Even if they don’t decide to stay overnight, the fact there’s a concert in

the evening means many more people will likely be looking for dinner opportunities prior to the concert or something to do afterward should they choose to gamble for a while and then look for an opportunity for extended evening entertainment.” It’s taken months of planning, but everything is starting to come together, Finnegan said. “Now that things are getting set up, we’re getting super excited,” Finnegan said. St. Jean agreed. “It will be a fun, energetic evening,” St. Jean said. “I think it’s just going to

be a lot of fun.” The Temptations sold tens of millions of albums, received four Grammy Awards and had 38 Billboard Top 40 hits, according to a news release from the casino. Dennis Edwards joined the lineup in 1971. The Temptations Review includes Edwards as well as Paul Williams Jr., son of original Temptation Paul Williams, David Sea, Mike Patillo and Chris Arnold. The Spinners offer “sophisticated uptempo R&B with precision choreography,” according to the release. The group has sold more than 60 million records, received six Grammy nomi-

nations and have 18 Top 40 hits and eight Top 10 hits. Air Supply, featuring original members Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock, is known for such hit songs as “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “The One that You Love,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Making Love Out of Nothing at All.” Rimes recently released a new album, “Spitfire.” She made her breakthrough into country music in 1996 at age 13, winning two Grammys the following year. The Pinnacle will host an outdoor charity event from 5-8 p.m. June 6 benefiting the Ability Center of Greater Toledo. Three members of the Dancing Wheels Company, based in Cleveland, will perform from 6:30-6:45 p.m. This “professional integrated dance company consists of both wheelchair and nonwheelchair dancers and was

founded by Mary Verdi-Fletcher, the first professional wheelchair dancer in the United States. “It’s going to be pretty neat, said Ability Center Events Coordinator Amy Kerchevall of the dance. “We ask our donors to come as well as local businesses to come, and the Pinnacle does a lot of publicity. The event, part of its Twylite Thursdays series, is open to the public and will include a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres special drinks and live entertainment. Admission is $10, which covers the food and

The Dancing Wheels, whose full troupe consists of 13 members, performs to current music and will provide a “sampling of its full show at the Twylite benefit, Verdi-Fletcher said. Their history is rooted in Verdi-Fletcher’s desire to dance despite her spina bifida. “As I was growing up, my mother was a professional dancer and my father was a musician. I really wanted to follow in my mother’s footsteps and wanted to dance, but there weren’t any dance programs available or classes available for children or adults in wheelchairs, Verdi-Fletcher said. “For a lot of years, I had that desire to dance. In the 1980s ... I started to experiment with some of my nondisabled friends that were good dancers. We put a routine together and entered the ‘Dance Fever’ competition and we were chosen as alternates to

go to California. There was no social media at the time, but [there was] immediate interest and success, and people wanted performances all over the country. I did 72 performances in a year. Then, we became affiliated with The Cleveland Ballet. Further entertainment will be provided by Jason LaPorte, an acoustic musician. The Twylite Thursday events are sponsored by The Pinnacle in conjunction with local nonprofits to highlight the Ability Center and raise money and awareness. They occur each Thursday evening from May through September. “Everyone should experience something new and innovative ... and if they haven’t seen it before, it is certainly something that will brighten their knowledge and inspire them, Verdi-Fletcher said. Your Tarotgram and Horoscope

May 26 – June 1, 2013

Events: Mercury enters Cancer and Mars enters Gemini (31st) Aries (March 21-April 19)

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Options hinge on specific factors or individuals. Friendliness and social charm grease the wheels of possibility. Sudden discoveries appear Sunday to Wednesday. Lock into good deals on Thursday, but control excesses. Check in with your emotions through a busy weekend.

Meet and spend time with people who share your most passionate interests this week. Romance and loving connections fuel enthusiasm. Blessings arrive on Thursday. The weekend demands social finesse and speedy action. Don’t let one rotten egg spoil everything.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

If your visions are too lofty, go for what you can get. Finances get a boost through favors and personal connections. Thursday may bring sensational offers and opportunities. You’re on the road after Friday. If people compete to stand in the limelight, just stand back and be yourself.

Other people are the source of amazing, fantastic solutions and outcomes. Relationships are a fulcrum for life choices. Keep passions moving in positive and productive directions. Weekend social situations are highly enriching and offer sparkling new friendships.

Gemini (May 21-June 21)

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

Critical events boil over the holiday weekend into Tuesday. Important relationships are a source of speedy changes and new possibilities. Secure favorable lasting agreements on Thursday. Group activities over the weekend are good but prone to sniping or catty remarks.

Deliberately or accidentally, you’re thrust into a new life path or adventure this week. Your luck with good timing and connections is phenomenal through Thursday. Weekend obligations may feel like an annoying distraction — just get through it gracefully.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

The holiday weekend gives opportunities to make resolutions, unite diverse factors or bring frazzled situations into accord. Things evolve favorably at work or in long-term developments. Pace yourself during the weekend; let others expend their excess energy.

You harvest the fruit of long labors this week. It’s a bumper crop! While congratulations are well-deserved, your identity may wobble if roles are coming to an end. Tackle tests of concentration or coordination in friendly competitions over the weekend.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Major milestones are at hand. You receive bonuses and extras and make excellent interpersonal connections. New attractions spark and creative juices flow through Thursday. Juggling work and play over the weekend makes you wish others would be more helpful.

Creativity, children and developing relationships are a major focus this week. A looming situation provokes anxieties that spoil your joys if you let them. A playful attitude is fertile ground for breakthrough discoveries and ideas. Thursday is your lucky day.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

The holiday weekend centers on shifting from old to new structures, whether in career or domestic matters. Choose what’s most important or what best fulfills your desires. A wise adviser steers you in a good direction midweek. Early June’s ebb and flow is excellent but tiring.

Special friends extend fabulous invitations or provide multiple benefits through Tuesday. Your desire for beauty is at a peak; improve home décor or flower garden. The forces of destiny are active. Spirits or angels could be nudging you to explore new options and relationships.
