February 23, 2014

Welcome to Restaurant Week Toledo 2014 By Sarah Ottney TOLEDO FREE PRESS MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

A week featuring special menus developed by local restaurants with a portion of proceeds benefiting a local nonprofit is a recipe that gets local foodies and philanthropists alike looking forward to Restaurant Week Toledo (RWT) each year. The fourth annual event, featuring 30 locally owned restaurants, is set for Feb. 24 through March 2. A portion of proceeds will benefit Youth Leadership Toledo and Students in Action, two youth programs of Leadership Toledo. “In only our fourth year, we have built this into a to-do food event in Toledo,” said Cory Dippold, associate executive director of Leadership Toledo. “Whether you are a casual diner or a foodie, Restaurant Week Toledo allows the community to try new restaurants at affordable prices or possibly try a new menu item at a favorite dining spot.” The event, presented by Medical Mutual, offers “a culinary taste of Toledo,” said RWT cochairs Becca Gorman and Margot Estes. Last year’s event drew in more than 10,000 diners. “We try to change the list every year a little to stay fresh and the restaurants really work to have exciting options on their menus,” Estes said. Participating restaurants are 5th Street Pub, Avenue Bistro, The Beirut, Black Kite Coffee, Burger Bar 419 (Heatherdowns Boulevard and Monroe Street locations), The Café at The Oliver House, Caper’s Restaurant & Bar, Cousino’s Steakhouse, Element 112, Gradkowski’s, ICE Restaurant & Bar, Korea Na, La Scola Italian Grill, Loma Linda, Mancy’s Bluewater Grille, Mancy’s Italian Grill, Mancy’s Steaks, Packo’s at the Park, Plate 21, Poco Piatti, Registry Bistro, Rockwell’s at The Oliver House, Rosie’s Italian Grille, Shorty’s True American Roadhouse, social., The Original Tony Packo’s, TREO, Ventura’s and Zinful Tasting & Taproom. Restaurant Week

n RESTAURANT CONTINUED FROM 4 “Everyone wins — the restaurant owners for the increased traffic and marketing exposure, the customers who have a fun week of dining and trying new spots while getting a good value, and Leadership Toledo, which receives proceeds from the restaurants,” Gorman said. Leadership Toledo’s youth programs help teens “realize what their leadership roles and responsibilities are and how to maximize their impact in their workplaces, schools and community,” Dippold said. Youth Leadership Toledo is a ninemonth program that works with select high school sophomores to develop leadership skills and community service. This year’s class is comprised of 51 students from 30 regional high schools. Students in Action, a component of the national Jefferson Awards organization, recognizes area students doing community volunteer work. Since starting in four local schools as a pilot program in 2008, the program has expanded into more than 30 schools, including St. Ursula Academy, which was named one of the top four programs in the country last year, Dippold said. Participating students logged more than 213,000 service hours last school year. n RESTAURANT CONTINUES ON 7

n RESTAURANT CONTINUED FROM 6 “Since our youth programs do not charge tuition, we must fundraise to cover costs and Restaurant Week Toledo is an innovative way to help support our mission while also supporting local restaurants,” he said. Kristin Kiser, owner of Black Kite Coffee and a graduate of Leadership Toledo, said she is excited to participate in RWT for the first time.

“I believe in Leadership Toledo in every way,” Kiser said. “I’ve been a part of the adult class and I’m continuously moved by the success of Youth Leadership Toledo. I can’t express enough how important it is for people to know about it, so to help spread the word through Restaurant Week Toledo is great.” The Original Tony Packo’s and Packo’s at the Park are also participating in RWT for the first time. “This is a real nice opportunity

Restaurant Week

A Toledo tradition since 2005 for local restaurants to get a little bit of recognition,” said Tony Packo Jr., chief operating officer for the familyoperated business. “The independents don’t have that same muscle power [as chain restaurants] to put their ads on TV every night. They have to work hard to get their reputation. The ones listed here are good, hard-working people and they deserve this.” Burger Bar 419 is taking part for the third year, this time at two loca-

tions since its Monroe Street location opened in May. “Restaurant Week Toledo really took off within the past two years,” said co-owner Tony House. “I think the public really enjoys the idea and being able to get out and hit all these restaurants they normally wouldn’t.” House said his favorite part is the anticipation leading up to the event. “You hear about it for months: It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s going to be here soon,” House said. “It’s definitely fun for the staff and gets them amped up. The volume we see goes up dramatically.” Zinful Tasting & Taproom is returning to RWT for the second year. “Restaurant Week is a remarkable program to be part of. They are professionals through and through,” said Zinful owner Joyce Franzblau. “Not only are they dedicated and focused on leadership programs for Toledo but equally committed to supporting local restaurants. The exposure and new business they in-

spire is beyond comparison.” RWT definitely helps lure people out of the house during a time of year when business tends to be slow, said Sandy Spang, owner of Plate 21, also in its third year of RWT. “It’s just a great boon to the local economy at the end of February when most people are home and hunkered down,” Spang said. TREO General Manager Nate Schank agreed. “We participated last year and thought it was a really cool event,” Schank said. “I like the fact that they focus on local restaurants. It’s a really cool way to keep people motivated about spending locally.” O Toledo Free Press is a media sponsor of Restaurant Week Toledo. About 300 people gathered in Downtown Toledo on Feb. 19 to get a taste of the upcoming Restaurant Week Toledo (RWT). Response to the inaugural kickoff party, which sold out, was overwhelmingly positive, said RWT co-chairs Margot Estes and Becca Gorman. “It was a phenomenal event,” Gorman said. “The restaurants really brought their ‘A’ game. People were raving about the food and were busy making plans for how many restaurants they can visit next week. The kickoff event allowed us to showcase what people can expect from Restaurant Week Toledo and it was clear that people can’t wait!” The fourth annual RWT, featuring 30 locally owned restaurants, is set for Feb. 24 through March 2. A portion of proceeds will benefit Youth Leadership Toledo and Students in Action, two youth programs of Leadership Toledo. Among the food served at the kickoff event was the Junkyard Dog

and falafel salad from Burger Bar 419, penne and meatballs from Caper’s, bacon-wrapped water chestnuts and ICE Bites (beef tenderloin tips) from ICE Restaurant and Bar, braised short ribs over wild mushroom risotto from La Scola Italian Grill, hummus and grape leaves from The Beirut and Poco Piatti, baby lamb chops from Rosie’s Italian Grille, Stuffed Chicken New Orleans from TREO, curried chicken salad on greens from The Café at The Oliver House, fried goat cheese ravioli with sherry gastrique from Element 112 and grilled grouper with sprout slaw from Registry Bistro. There was also a coffee and dessert station, featuring pour-over Madcap Coffee from Plate 21, coffee and mini cinnamon muffins from Black Kite Coffee and petits fours from The Café at The Oliver House. Area distributors offering wine and craft beer were Ampelography, Bowling Green Beverage, Cavalier Distributing, D&E Fine Wine Group, Grand Cru, Premium Beverage Supply, Tramonte Distributing, Treu House of Munch and Vintage Wines. n KICKOFF CONTINUES ON 9

“We are thrilled with everyone’s comments and reaction to the kick-off,” Estes said. “The general consensus was people were amazed by the restaurants and what they brought as a sample. They loved the vibe of the Secor Building. A lot of people were saying, ‘This is so hip!’ I overheard people saying, ‘It feels like I’m in Chicago or New York City,’ so that was neat. I heard people saying, ‘Oh my gosh, this is amazing; let’s make plans to go out next week.’” Participants of Youth Leadership Toledo and Youth In Philanthropy Encouraging Excellence (YIPEE) served as volunteers at the event, including setting up, checking coats, working the checkin table and passing out menus. TREO general manager Nate Schank said he thought the event went well. “We thought it was a great event. It was a great way to get our menu out there and help people get an idea what they can expect at Restaurant Week Toledo,” Schank said. “We definitely drew

in a lot of people with our food. We had people coming back for seconds. We’re excited to have a good turnout for the week and hopefully raise a bunch of money for Leadership Toledo.” Emily Wagy, general manager at Caper’s, also called the event a success. “I thought it went really well,” Wagy said. “It was a lot of fun and good exposure for restaurants. We got some very good comments and people came back for seconds. We went through all our food. Each restaurant had their menu displayed and it was a good opportunity to really generate some excitement in people about where they are going to go next week.” Estes said people seemed to enjoy the wine and beer distributors as well. “They added a great element to the night where people were trying all these foods and then could go over and learn a little about wine and beer,” Estes said. “They said people were really interested and engaged in learning. and be adventurous.” Lindsay Myers, executive director of the Oregon Economic Development Foundation, said she had a great time at the event. “It was a blast,” Myers said. “There was really good energy in the room, with music playing and great food. All the restaurants had different dishes that showcased things you might not normally order there, so that was cool. And there were a lot of good local wine and beer distributors. “It was nice to see all those people come out and support Restaurant Week Toledo,” added Myers, a member of this year’s adult Leadership Toledo class. “I think it really got people talking about it and got the word out on social media.” Myers said Rosie’s, La Scola and Burger Bar 419 were among her favorite dishes and she was also excited to discover restaurants she’d never heard of. “Everything was really good,” Myers said. “I really enjoyed the lamb from Rosie’s. I would definitely make more of an effort to go there. I’ve never been to La Scola and they had a really good dish. Burger Bar 419 had a really good pulled pork sandwich.” Max Reddish of Reddish Printing in Oregon said the event gave him incentive for checking out some restaurants he normally wouldn’t. “I kind of have a problem with leaving the Downtown area, so having a taste of some of the more suburban restaurants that are out there definitely made me want to venture out to the outskirts,” Reddish said. Reddish said his favorite dish of the night was Rosie’s. “Rosie’s was pretty damn good,” Reddish said. “I think that one was my favorite.” Estes said organizers plan to host the event again next year. “It was definitely a win,” Estes said. “We got so much great feedback from everybody, from the restaurants to the distributors to the patrons that came.” Participating RWT restaurants are 5th Street Pub, Avenue Bistro, The Beirut, Black Kite Coffee, Burger Bar 419 (Heatherdowns Boulevard and Monroe Street locations), The Café at The Oliver House, Caper’s Restaurant & Bar, Cousino’s Steakhouse, Element 112, Gradkowski’s, ICE Restaurant & Bar, Korea Na, La Scola Italian Grill, Loma Linda, Mancy’s Bluewater Grille, Mancy’s Italian Grill, Mancy’s Steaks, Packo’s at the Park, Plate 21, Poco Piatti, Registry Bistro, Rockwell’s at The Oliver House, Rosie’s Italian Grille, Shorty’s True American Roadhouse, social., The Original Tony Packo’s, TREO, Ventura’s and Zinful Tasting & Taproom. Restaurant Week Toledo offers healthy options By Sarah Ottney TOLEDO FREE PRESS Star MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

Restaurant Week Toledo (RWT) organizers want everyone to be able to feel good about enjoying a meal out to benefit a great cause. For the second year, the Leadership Toledo fundraiser has partnered with presenting sponsor Medical Mutual to ensure each participating restaurant offers at least one healthy dish. A Leadership Toledo survey showed 31 percent of last year’s RWT diners chose one of the dishes designated as a healthy option, said Mark Tooman, communications manager for Medical Mutual. “Diners were pleased that there was a healthy option available to them,” Tooman said. “Nearly one out of every three meals chosen was the healthy option. I believe this showed that having a healthy option is important to the customer and that healthy eating has become a mindset for more people.” Each restaurant’s healthy option was reviewed by Connie Beutel, Medical Mutual’s manager of health promotion and wellness, who offered suggestions on ways to make the dishes even healthier, Tooman said. A healthy diet helps maintain a healthy body weight and helps prevent or lessen the negative effects of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, particularly when combined with exer-

cise, stress management and other healthy habits, Tooman said. “As health care and health insurance options change, consumers are being required to take a bigger role in maintaining their health. Healthy eating choices are one way they can be proactive, whether they are at home or dining out at a restaurant,” Tooman said. “By incorporating a healthy option into the Restaurant Week menus, people will be able to make smart choices while supporting a great cause in Leadership Toledo.” The fourth annual RWT is set for Feb. 24 through March 2. All participating restaurants are locally owned. Each will feature a special RWT menu priced at $10, $20 or $30. (Drinks, taxes and gratuities are not included unless specified.) A portion of proceeds will benefit two of local nonprofit Leadership Toledo’s youth programs: Youth Leadership Toledo and Students in Action. Participating restaurants are 5th Street Pub, Avenue Bistro, The Beirut, Black Kite, Burger Bar 419 (Heatherdowns Boulevard and Monroe Street locations), The Café at The Oliver House, Caper’s Restaurant & Bar, Cousino’s Steakhouse, Element 112, Gradkowski’s, ICE Restaurant & Bar, Korea Na, La Scola Italian Grill, Loma Linda, Mancy’s Bluewater Grille, Mancy’s Italian Grill, Mancy’s Steaks, Packo’s at the Park, Plate 21, Poco Piatti, Registry Bistro, Rockwell’s at The Oliver House, Rosie’s Italian Grille, Shorty’s True

GRILLED Halibut from mancy’s italian grill American, Roadhouse, social., The Original Tony Packo’s, TREO, Ventura’s and Zinful Tasting & Taproom. A Feb. 19 sold-out kickoff party, sponsored by Hylant, featured food samples from several RWT menus as well as craft beer and wine tastings, live entertainment and more. Everything at TREO is made from scratch, said General Manager Nate Schank. The Sylvania eatery’s designated RWT healthy option dish is rustico tagliatelle, featuring saffron tagliatelle with sauteed sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, artichoke hearts, eggplant, butternut squash and pine nuts in a light, smooth Parmesan pesto with fresh basil. “The pasta is handmade in house. We make the dough from scratch and roll it out per order, which allows us to have total control of ingredients from beginning to end,” Schank said. “That’s something not everyone does and something we really take pride in.” Schank said he’s noticed more customers asking for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. “As customers become more health-conscious, we want to cater to that, but also lead that taste by creating

options that are tasty but also healthy,” Schank said. Registry Bistro plans to offer three healthy choice entrees for RWT: grilled market fish with sprout slaw, five-spiced yams and chorizo hash or grilled winter vegetable ramen with poached egg. “I like to incorporate things that really pack a punch of flavor, but it’s a little healthier,” said chef and coowner Erika Rapp. Plate 21 has no shortage of glutenfree, vegan and vegetarian options, including its popular edamame kale salad, said owner Sandy Spang. Other healthy RWT options include Avenue Bistro’s chicken picatta, Black Kite’s Asian pear and lentil salad with grilled chicken and Zinful’s duck ceviche. “Our Medical Mutual healthy option is a spin on what is traditionally a fish preparation,” said Zinful owner Joyce Franzblau. “We use duck as an alternative to demonstrate that healthy does not have to be typical meatless or fish entrées. Our menu items offered during Restaurant Week are also gluten-free. We recognize the trend and are trying to stay ahead of it by making healthy food interesting and delicious.” O

Augsburg Lutheran Church marks 100 years EDITOR, TOLEDOFAVS.COM David.Yonke@ReligionNews.com

Exactly 100 years ago Feb. 22, six people from Glenwood Lutheran Church met in a room above a gro-

cery store in West Toledo and started a church in what was then a distant suburb of Downtown Toledo. Augsburg Lutheran Church is celebrating its milestone centennial year with a catered dinner the evening of Feb. 22 and a special worship service at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 23.

After branching off from Glenwood Lutheran on Monroe Street, Augsburg quickly began to flourish in West Toledo’s Library Village neighborhood. The first Augsburg Lutheran Church building was built in 1916, a wooden chapel on a wooded lot just half a mile west of

the grocery store. The building could seat 120 and was quickly outgrown by the expanding church. The congregation broke ground at its current location, 1342 W. Sylvania Ave., on Aug. 16, 1921 and moved into the imposing stone structure, with its large bell tower, the following year. It was built at a cost of $55,000 with members of the church council putting up their homes as collateral. By the end of the 1930s, Augsburg’s Sunday school had more than 600 members and the number of confirmed members of the church was 1,019. Augsburg underwent several renovations and expansions over the decades, including the addition of an educational unit, music room, lounge and chapel. When Augsburg celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1964, the church had swollen to 3,539 baptized members.

“It was the largest Lutheran church in Ohio at one time,” said Lori Reid, church secretary and lifelong member. Lynne Jacobson, 57, also a lifelong member of Augsburg, remembers when the church facilities were bursting at the seams. “The gymnasium was filled, there was a house next door and that was filled for Sunday school classes. They also had Sunday school upstairs in the church, and that was filled,” she said. “Every Sunday we had two services and the church was packed to the gills. My family always came late so we had to sit in the back row.” Pat Dermer, 64, a member of Augsburg since 1958, said many members lived in the neighborhood. “There were many people in this Library Village area who walked to church. My mother never drove so we always walked here,” she said. n AUGSBURG CONTINUES ON 32

AuGsburg lutheran church marks 100 years on Feb. 22.

32 Religion n AUGSBURG CONTINUED FROM 31 Today, Augsburg has about 350 members, with Sunday attendance averaging 70 or 80 people. Much of the decline in numbers reflects national trends, especially for mainline Protestant churches. In addition, members say changing ne i g hb orho o d d e m o g r ap h i c s have impacted attendance. DERMER Augsburg has gone from having a full-time pastor to having two part-time pastors, the Rev. Bill Fink who serves on an interim basis and presides at the Sunday services, and the Rev. Stacy LauerScovanner, who handles weddings, funerals and visitations for Augsburg members — in addition to serving as senior pastor at Redeemer and Reformation Lutheran churches.

February 23, 2014

A Toledo tradition since 2005 ToledoFreePress.com Lauer-Scovanner praised Augsburg’s members for their devotion in carrying out the work of the church. “This is an amazing congregation full of people who are passionate about sharing the Good News of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection with those around them, in word and in action, and they feel called to be disciples in the world,” she said. “They reach out to kids and teenagers, to people who are hungry, they take Communion to those who are sick, and when a need arises, they are ready to step in.” Fink said the shared pastoral duties have worked well, largely because of the support of the church’s lay leaders. “They do a great job, not only with their lay Communion assistance but also with social ministries,” he said. The church continues its outreach to Library Village, including providing free groceries through the Feed Your Neighbor program.

“We’re using our best coping skills but we’ve kept everything going,” Dermer said. “This congregation is dedicated,” Jacobson added. “We will go on no matter what.” One of the church’s most traumatic moments came in May 2005, when it was struck by an electrical fire. The stone structure survived but everything inside was damaged or

destroyed. Rebuilding and restoration, which took more than a year and a half, included a redesign of the sanctuary, adjacent rooms and office spaces. The sanctuary was given a more open feel and a nursery with large windows was built right off the main sanctuary. This weekend, the anniversary celebrations will not just reflect on 100 years of ministry, but look ahead as

well, Fink said. “We don’t want to be stuck looking backward. We are looking ahead to the next hundred years,” he said. EPIC celebrates seventh birthday with annual bash By Bailey Dick

Toledo Free Press News Editor bdick@toledofreepress.com

One local group is bringing Bourbon Street to the business crowd in Toledo during an event next weekend. EPIC Toledo, an organization that helps to engage talented young business and community leaders in the Toledo area, is hosting its 7th Birthday Bash. The party this year will have a Mardi Gras twist, featuring food, drinks and entertainment with a New Orleans flavor. According to event organizers, the Birthday Bash usually draws a crowd of 300-400 people. “This year EPIC hit 1,500 members, so that’s really something to be proud of,” said Sara Swisher, the Director of EPIC Toledo. “That’s 1,500 people engaged in the community that have been retained in the Toledo region. And that’s definitely something to celebrate.” Swisher said the Birthday Bash is often the first EPIC event individuals attend before getting involved with the organization. “For a lot of people, their first event is the Birthday Bash because it’s just fun and there’s no agenda. And

then when they hear about the other things we offer, they want to get more engaged,” Swisher said. The event will include entertainment from local band New Orleans Party Asylum, Southern-style food from area restaurants, a photo booth and plenty of Hurricanes. “We really want people to get the feel of Bourbon Street at the event. As far as I know, there’s not really any kind of Mardi Gras party in Toledo. So maybe we’ll fill that void,” Swisher said. The event is also a milemarker for Swisher, who will celebrate one year with EPIC next month. “It’s the last big event of the year that I hadn’t had a chance to plan, and it kind of marks a year for me. It definitely has a special place for me,” Swisher said. EPIC’s 7th Birthday Bash will take place from 7-11 p.m. Feb. 28 at The Pinnacle, 1772 Indian Wood Circle in Maumee. The $20 cost of attendance includes a complimentary beverage. You can purchase tickets online at epictoledo.com or at the door the night of the event. You must be 21 or older to attend. The event is sponsored by KeyBank, Yark Fiat, The Andersons and HCR ManorCare. O

Microbreweries take center stage at Glass City Beer Fest

On Feb. 28, there will be plenty of reasons for the Glass City to raise its mugs in celebration as the 8th Annual Glass City Beer Festival takes over the Lucas County Recreation Center. This year’s event will feature 45 microbreweries and more than 224 total tastes. Attendees will have the opportunity to tip pints from their favorite local breweries such as Maumee Bay Brewing Company, Great Black Swamp Brewing Company and Sugar Ridge Brewery. Regional and nationally renowned breweries including

Great Lakes Brewing Company, Hoppin’ Frog, Deschutes and Stone will also be tapping beers from their extensive portfolios. Revenue from the event will help support the Arc of Lucas County and the Northwest Ohio Hemophilia Foundation. According to Carla Wells, executive director of Northwest Ohio Hemophilia Foundations, the event has prospered because it provides a unique opportunity to try a lot of different beers and styles. “A lot of these microbrews can be costly compared to your domestic/tap

beers so it’s a great place to try them without spending a lot of money on a six-pack that you may not enjoy,” Wells said. “This event has been at the forefront of the microbrew explosion in the area and has become the premier place to go and try different

styles from across the country.” General admission tickets for the event, which will run from 7-11 p.m. February 28, can be purchased in advance for $30 at the Anderson’s customer service desks or for $35 at the door. VIP tickets will be $50 in

advance or $55 at the door. With the price of admission, attendees will get 12 taste tickets, each good for a 3-ounce pour. Additional taste tickets will be available for $1 each or six for $5. Parking for the event is free. O — Dave Kubacki

Your Tarotgram and Horoscope

FEB. 23 – MARCH 1, 2014

Events: Mercury direct in Aquarius (28th), New Moon in Pisces and Mars retrograde in Libra (1st) Aries (March 21-April 19)

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Your hopes and dreams are screaming for fulfillment. Anything standing in the way could get a blast of your hot temper this week. Channel your fiery fury in productive directions. Embrace your goal, figure out the steps to take and obstacles to conquer, and GO.

A castle in the sand topples. It was your pet chimera and you’ll miss it. The universe has other plans for you. Be open to events and ideas that will transform your fate and fortunes. Redirect attention and efforts into something of enduring value and satisfaction.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Your health and well-being are entwined with satisfaction in relationships and work. It’s time to balance the scales, break bad patterns and discard bad attitudes. Seek an inspiring vision of the future on Friday, and commit to it on Saturday. Radical changes are possible.

Hard work results in limited payoffs. You’re antsy and long for greater challenges and new horizons. Ambitions boil over in a new direction with surprising intensity. After Thursday, something or someone could sweep you off your feet and into new realms.

Gemini (May 21-June 21)

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

You must work with what’s on hand. It may not seem like enough, but midweek breakthroughs deliver inspirations that change your entire outlook. Everything happens for a reason, which may be discovered after Friday. Losses are balanced by gains.

You’re ready to buck the old and boring, and limiting conditions are anathema now. Turbulent external events parallel your desires to break free and conquer new worlds. The wheel of fortune turns for you on Friday. Think carefully before rushing toward possibilities.

Cancer (June 22-July 22)

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Shocking and amazing events unfold at a rapid-fire pace. Plans for the week or year are transformed. Emotions are released in a torrential flow. Let the dust settle before making big decisions, as talks with loved ones on Friday offer new viewpoints and possibilities.

Your sense of self-identity (and even your body) is in a state of heightened awareness and realization. Discoveries rattle your cage; assumptions are blown out of the water. By Friday, a new approach is dawning. Friends and loved ones support your process.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

The week’s events push you to the cutting edge. Look for a niche where your skills can shine in unexpected ways. Other people leave a trail of bread crumbs to follow. As the weekend arrives, it’s time to re-tool your ambitions. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

Slowly evolving situations reach swift turning points. Your work and daily environment are dramatically transformed. Other people's abrupt changes create more turbulence. Use your ingenuity to harmonize and benefit from all these transitions.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

Other people share stunning revelations about their hopes for the future. It may seem crazy, but shake-ups make growth and fulfillment possible. By Friday you’re onboard and ready to share visions and plans with others. Prepare to do what it takes to make things happen.

Even if you think you’re shock-proof, this week will surprise you. Upsetting events change the rules and fresh plans must be formulated midweek. You have to go with the flow. Many blessings are evident as experiences are shared with those you love and care about.

CARLSON’S CRITTERS

A home for Beyoncé

Beyoncé is a 1-year-old female shorthair tortie. She is a gorgeous young cat with beautiful markings and a soft velvety coat. Her favorite spot to sleep in the humane society cat room is on the top of the cat perch where she can keep an eye on her surroundings. Beyoncé likes to climb inside cardboard boxes if there is one readily available. Her fondness for boxes could be partly because Beyoncé was stuck outside in the cold until someone found her and brought her to the Toledo Area Humane Society to find a new home. If you are looking for a unique beauty with style and grace, this glamour woman may

be a good match for you. Beyoncé has been spayed, examined by a TAHS staff veterinarian, is current on her vaccinations and is microchipped. Beyoncé Toledo Area Humane Society is located at 1920 Indian Wood Circle, Arrowhead Park, Maumee. Adoption hours are noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
