From wedding bells to Christmas bells

Star of the Week

WNWO anchor Abby Powell Turpin and husband Travis lend voices to classic Mel Tormé track. By Brigitta Burks Toledo Free Press Star News Editor bburks@toledofreepress.com

Newlyweds Abby Powell Turpin, anchor/ writer/producer for WNWO’s morning show, and her husband Travis Turpin didn’t waste time recording “The Christmas Song” for “Holiday Wishes 2,” a CD project benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation. In fact, the two were in the studio the day after they returned from their honeymoon. The pair got married Oct. 6 in Nebraska, where Travis is from, before traveling to an allinclusive resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. They received an email asking them to do a track while vacationing and quickly agreed, Abby said. “[Recording the track] was great. We have a great time singing together and it’s always nice with Christmas music. It’s all about family and love,” she said. After working her shift at WNWO (Abby gets to work at 12:30 a.m. and then anchors from 4:30-7 a.m.), she and Travis cut the track together earlier this fall. Singing was what brought Abby and Travis together. In 2008, the two met while performing a country music revue in Nashville, Tenn. “[Travis] is actually still a headliner on cruise ships so he travels usually about two weeks out of the month,” Abby said. During the interview, Travis was headlining on a cruise by Saint Martin in the Caribbean. Abby left the full-time entertainment business to become a broadcast journalist. She joined WNWO this summer after working in Texas. She said her husband’s career allows her to be flexible with her own. “He can live anywhere as long as it’s near an airport,” Abby said. Abby grew up near Columbus before receiving a musical theater degree from Belmont University in Nashville. After college, she spent time working in New York City and at Toyko Disney, where she was lead singer in a Big Band show and played Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” at special events. “This is my first time living in Ohio in a long time,” she said. “It’s nice to be back in the

Midwest. It’s what I grew up around; it’s what I know so well.” Although Abby still sings at WNWO events, she said she’s happy to be in her new field. “I kind of knew [singing] wasn’t the ultimate career for me … I’ve always really loved writing so that’s kind of what got me in to the broadcasting world,” she said. “I’m 32 now and I think that every experience that I had in my 20s in the performing business when I was living in New York City and living in Japan, that really helped make me the person that I am today in order to be an effective communicator in the broadcast business,” Abby added. Abby said she enjoys lending her voice to good causes like Make-A-Wish. “Singing is always a lot of fun, but when it can be put to use to help a really important cause, that’s when it really means something. Singing’s always very special. It makes you feel a lot of emotions when you perform,” she said. “‘The Christmas Song’ is actually my favorite Christmas song. I love the Nat King Cole version and that’s what made that song famous,” Abby added of the silky, smooth track she chose for “Holiday Wishes 2.” “The Christmas Song,” with its well-known lyrics, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” was written by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells in 1944. The Nat King Cole Trio later recorded the song in 1946. Abby’s own unique style and her husband’s are evident on the track they contributed. “Travis, what he does out on ships as a headliner, is he does a lot of Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and so he just sang in his style and I sang it in my style. [With] my style, I have a lot of opera training. We did our own styles and kind of bent toward each other’s as well,” she said. But will Abby ever return to showbiz? She doesn’t think so. “Music has always been something that I loved … but I really don’t miss doing it full time. I really feel very fulfilled doing the broadcasting business,” she said. “I really love the broadcast business. I want to be in the broadcast business the rest of my life.” O

Hope grows Kerry Patrick Clark and children’s choir perform original song for CD. By Sarah Ottney TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

A steel drum performance, a poster at a movie theater and a couple of key conversations were among the inspirations behind “Hope Grows,” an original song contributed to “Holiday Wishes 2” by local singer-songwriter Kerry Patrick Clark. After watching a Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio performance, Clark approached director Lisa Alleman about writing a song for the choir. Clark’s son, Robbie, is a member of the group. “They had a steel drum band and it was so cool not only as a musician but as a father of a 9-year-old in the choir. I was literally in tears because of the musical experience he got through that,” Clark said. “I went up to [Alleman] and said, ‘What would you think of some original music?’ In the mean time, [Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief] Michael Miller calls and said, ‘Want to be part of this CD?’” Clark intertwined the two opportunities and wrote a song to perform with the children’s choir that he could also contribute to the holiday CD. “[Alleman and I] talked about what Christmas means, what the holiday means, why we sing songs, why we give gifts — and it’s all wrapped up in there without sounding too celebrationspecific,” Clark said. n HOPE GROWS CONTINUES ON 5

n HOPE GROWS CONTINUED FROM 4 “I had the song written, but the chorus wasn’t written because I didn’t have the hook. Then I was driving by the Maumee Indoor Theatre and they had a big poster that says, ‘Hope Grows’ and I said, ‘That’s it!’ So that’s the way it all came together. Bits and pieces and conversation and a stinkin’ poster.” The song addresses how many adults feel stressed around the holidays, but rekindle their joy once they choose to step back and see the wonder of the season through a child’s eyes. “Here it’s snowing again, I’m rushing around like a crazy person — the last thing I want to do is

open presents and be ‘Fa-la-la’,” Clark said. “I sat down in the midst of this and thought, ‘I get to choose how to react. Do I choose the consumer mentality or do I subscribe to the wonder of the season?’ In the midst of it, I get to choose in or choose out. And by choosing to be in, I can let hope grow in my life and heart and mind.” Clark, who also contributed a track to last year’s “Holiday Wishes” CD, said he was honored and happy to once again help Make-A-Wish. “I get to play music for a living. It’s all I ever wanted to do,” Clark said. “This is my way of giving back to the community that has allowed me to make a living this way. I look at my life and I know I am extremely blessed. Tatiana Owens sees her dreams come true, help others with theirs By Martini Rox Toledo Free Press STAR Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com

Tatiana Owens, the 20 year-old star born and raised in Toledo, started chasing her dreams earlier than most after discovering her talent while singing in church. By the time she entered the Toledo School for the Arts (TSA) in the seventh grade, there was no doubt in her or anyone else’s mind that she was destined for stardom. Enormous support from her parents has been instrumental in the success she has already achieved as a singer/songwriter. Owens’ popular songs “Pendulum” (from the VH1 show “Love & Hip Hop”) and “Hazy” have gained her the right attention and fans worldwide. Owens contributes an original track, “Winter Holidays,” to this year’s “Holiday Wishes” CD benefiting Make-AWish Foundation. Support from family and friends while still in elementary school helped launch her career with opportunities to sing, She sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at her father’s military events and her mother encouraging her to do the same at Mud Hens and Storm games. Working with local talent agency, Starbound NYC, was part of Owens’ preparation for success.

The agency provided connections that have been useful since she graduated high school and moved to New York City. Listeners who hear Owens’ voice are impressed by the tone, clarity, quality and accuracy of her singing. Owens possesses the talent to be as big as Christina, Mariah, Beyoncé or Whitney while maintaining an original sound. Her pop/R&B music has been featured on networks such as MTV, VH1, Lifetime and Sundance, to name a few. Owens has also worked as a co-writer with some of the most popular songwriters in the business, a few of whom have written for the likes of Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson and Nicki Minaj. Currently signed with New York based independent label TC Music, Toledo’s native daughter shows us what the benefits of early preparation in Toledo look like. Martini Rox: You started working on your career early. How did your education at TSA impact your music and entertainment career? Tatiana Owens: I was involved in quite a few things. I graduated with a double major in music and dance. I did theater as well while I was there and I think theater was one of the major things that helped contribute to what my job is today and what I do now. Also, songwriting, I took creative writing classes

while I was there at TSA and those songwriting courses that we took throughout the creative writing process really helped me, especially to advance my career today. I learned techniques in writing that help me today. Rox: What tools of your trade were instrumental in moving your career forward while living in Toledo? Owens: I did a lot of theater. I was in musical theater, I went back and forth to New York for auditions and I think auditioning is the No. 1 thing that can make you or break you because a lot of times that’s how you get your big break. Sometimes it’s a win or lose situation, you get some things and you don’t get other things. I happened to meet up with my manager (in New York) and I sang at this club and he was there along with a couple other agents and management companies and he immediately fell in love with me. (He) got on the phone with his wife and said, “This girl is amazing” and from then on, I started going to recording sessions. “I think that’s what helped start my career because I was getting into artist development and not rushing into it right away. I was able to do artist development and stay in school and Toledo School for the Arts was great for that. They’re trying to advance your career. O

Snowed in with you By Matt Liasse TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR STAFF WRITER star@toledofreepress.com

Because it was September when he started writing the lyrics to “Snowed In With You,” Jameil Aossey watched the film “The Polar Express” with his kids to get him in the holiday spirit. “I thought, ‘I’ll kind of start teasing them about the Christmas season,’” said Aossey, chief producer and engineer of The Moma Groupe. “You have to put yourself in a position to be able to create … get the juices going. Even though I could’ve picked a more romantic movie since we were going to do a song about a AOSSEY significant other. But, you know, they’re in their pajamas, on a train, drinking hot chocolate. It gets you in the mood.” The song was recorded at his studio in Toledo and mixed in Orlando. But there was no sunshine to burst his Christmas spirit since he was there during Hurricane Sandy. He faced 40 mph winds and stormy conditions. Monika Lignae, the vocalist on the track, was introduced to Aossey through one of his

Jameil Aossey pens original song for charity CD.

partners. Lignae has a jazz background, which complements the tempo of the song, Aossey said. “We thought she would be perfect,” Aossey said. “She was open to all the ideas, all the lyrics. We kind of let her run with the track once we presented it to her so she could use her artistry rather than doing what we thought.” The song is about spending Christmas with a significant other, but Aossey said there’s a deeper meaning. “A deeper message in the song is ‘Let’s just live,’ meaning just living your life the best way you know how and do whatever makes you happy,” Aossey said. “Make the best with whatever comes your way.” Aossey, who also contributed a track to last year’s “Holiday Wishes” CD, said he loved being a part of the compilation for the second year. “It’s one thing to make a Christmas CD,” Aossey said. “It’s another thing to make [one] and donate the proceeds to a good cause. It shows integrity [and] care. It shows a lot about our character in Toledo.” Aossey said writing an original song was important to him. “We’re trying to start a new tradition,” Aossey said. “Who knows? We might come up with a Christmas classic that becomes something someone wants to cover.” O

Polka Floyd Show mashes ‘Santa,’ ‘Hell’ By Sarah Ottney TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

Take a Pink Floyd song and a classic Christmas tune, add a healthy dose of polka and mix it together and you get “Run Like Claus,” Toledo band The Polka Floyd Show’s original contribution to the “Holiday Wishes 2” CD benefiting Make-A-Wish. The track, arranged by singer/guitarist Ken Haas and his wife, keyboardist Penny Haas, was created by combining Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell” with the holiday classic “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” “The lyrics to ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ just plugged right into ‘Run Like Hell.’ It was freaky and really fun,” Ken Haas said. “It was just one of those moments. We were sitting at the kitchen table, drinking coffee, and it was like, ‘Boom!’ We had the whole thing laid out in minutes and just sat there giggling. It’s one of those happy accidents — not unlike how Pink Floyd music, for whatever reason, lends itself to what we do.” The Polka Floyd Show tours the country, performing a unique blend of polka-infused Pink Floyd songs. “We are the world’s only Pink Floyd tribute polka band,” Ken said. “While it sounds like it’s kind of a joke, we take it seriously. We really pay honor to Pink Floyd. We do the stuff correctly.” The recording process was fun and smooth, he said.

“As a band, we’ve been performing ‘Run Like Hell’ for six years,” he said. “We just made some modifications to the lyrics, but the timing of the song is the same. We had some Christmas fun with the extended rollout at the end, but it went pretty quick. We did it in one afternoon.” Ken said he hopes “Holiday Wishes 2” helps put listeners into the spirit of the holiday season. “There’s a whole lot of talk about the country divided by politics and the last election,” he said. “I hope this Make-A-Wish CD will help everybody get that holiday spirit of pulling together to do something nice for the kids and young adults who could use something nice.” Ken said The Polka Floyd Show — which also includes Eric Hite on accordion and vocals, Chris Zielinski on bass and vocals and Frankie Dramczyk on drums — enjoys giving back whenever possible. “I consider myself lucky to be able to give back to the community while doing what I really love to do,” Haas said. “I love to play guitar and make music. The whole process is great. The fact I can do that and give back to the community at the same time is awesome.” As for “Run Like Claus,” Haas said he hopes listeners enjoy it and just have fun with it. “I hope people hear our track and just get a good chuckle out of it,” Haas said. Must be Santa Voodoo Libido channels ‘blues polka’ for CD. By Brigitta Burks TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR NEWS EDITOR bburks@toledofreepress.com

This is the second year Voodoo Libido, a local blues, soul and rhythm group, lent its musical stylings to the “Holiday Wishes” project. This year, the band performed “Must Be Santa” for the Make-A-Wish benefit CD. Last year, it recorded “Run Run Rudolph.” “We’ll do it next year and forever,” said John Rockwood, who did some of the vocals on this year’s track. The other musicians on the track include Dave Athanas on guitar, Rick Gerbeck on drums, Tim Berry on bass vocals, Steve Zilka on trumpet, Ross Murray on trombone and vocals, Bob Manley on saxophone and Nick Mousoulias on lead vocals. n VOODOO CONTINUES ON 13

Bob Dylan did his own version of the jovial tune in 2009. “We had a horn section this time around. It’s kind of fun. It’s not really bluesy; it’s blues polka,” Rockwood said. The song was written by Hal Moore and Bill Fredericks and first released in the 1960s. Voodoo Libido also has a long history. Rockwood and Athanas have been playing together for about 30 years. Voodoo Libido was born from a friend asking Rockwood to get some guys

to play together at a Christmas party. Although Rockwood doesn’t play it on the Christmas track, he often plays the washboard for Voodoo Libido in addition to playing the harmonica and offering vocals. “I’m learning every day. I saw [the washboard] down in New Orleans and my wife got it for me for a birthday present,” Rockwood said. “It’s kinda fun.” He added that he enjoys helping people through music. “Anything you can give back is a blessing and for somebody that’s very sick and in a bad place, it’s nice to be able to say, ‘Hey we helped,’ and we had fun doing it,” Rockwood said. Jazz legend Jon Hendricks contributed “The Gift,” an original song, to the “Holiday Wishes 2” CD. He recently recorded the track in Toledo, dedicating it to his longtime friend, jazz pianist Claude Black. “The words are self-explanatory,” Hendricks told Toledo Free Press Star from his home in New York City. “‘It’s Christmas time again and I remember when I bought the most expensive gift in town/Now I’m giving you a heart filled with love, dear/That’s the Christmas gift that lasts the whole year round.’” Hendricks, 91, said he wrote the song “a long time ago” in response to hearing the same Christmas songs over and over. “Everybody always sings ‘Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire’ and it’s a great song, but I thought, ‘Wait a minute, 10 years of singing this song. Let me see what else I can come up with.’ So I came up with ‘The Gift,’” Hendricks said. “Tony Bennett sang it at a couple of functions. He and I are good friends.

“I like it. I think it’s a nice song. It’s a quintessential Christmas song. The heartfelt feeling as opposed to money. You can pay so much for gifts, but it’s how close the gift touches the hearts of the people you’re giving it to that’s the important thing and that’s what my song says.” Hendricks grew up in Toledo near fellow jazz legend Art Tatum and went on to rub shoulders with many other great names in jazz, including Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Randy Weston, Charlie Parker and Joe Morello as he toured the world with vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and then as a solo artist. He returned to Toledo later in life and now serves as a part-time professor of jazz studies at the University of Toledo. Hendricks, who still sings and occasionally performs and records, said he’s happy to be part of the CD project benefiting Make-A-Wish. “It’s a good way to be a participant in many people’s hearts and to lift their spirits maybe and make them feel better, too,” Hendricks said. “Bring them the gift that you have — the Christmas gift that lasts the whole year round, the heart filled with love.” O

Home for Christmas By Martini Rox

Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com

She hails from a family that is ingrained in Toledo Hip-Hop legacy. She is the sister of Mr. International, one of the first Toledo rap artists to gain national attention and radio airplay; she is also related to producer/rapper Rugby. The road to success spiritually, personally and professionally has been long and rough for singer/ songwriter Carmen Miller. Miller contributes “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” to the “Holiday Wishes 2” CD. Miller was born in Detroit, the third of six children. Her mother was a gospel singer and her father was a cop. The family moved back and forth between Detroit and Toledo, where Miller would be introduced to the studio at 14 years old by Mr. International, as a female MC on one of his tracks. It was this experience that took her from singing in the choir to girl groups, and finally to a solo career. Coming from a big family, Miller was no stranger to discipline and responsibility. These qualities were put to the test when her mother passed away; she became more of a mother than a sister to her younger siblings while starting a family of her own. Using music to overcome tragedy kept her

family close and after recording with various artists in groups and as a solo artist, she has found her niche and calling. Miller has come full circle, from recording to performing all genres and back to her gospel roots. These days you may recognize her as the frontwoman for the band Tantric Soul. Taking a leap of faith, Miller completed her solo inspirational gospel album “All Good,” available through iTunes, Amazon.com and Allied Records. Her newest release, “Skin & Bones,” was executive produced and co-written by Robert Davenport. You can also see Miller perform live with Tantric Soul. She recently talked about her experience and the importance of performance as a recording artist. Martini Rox: After being in girl groups through the ’90s and early 2000s, what led to your decision to go solo? Carmen Miller: I had this drive to continue. I love music; I’m always going to love music. One day as that group situation was ending, I was really discouraged. My husband actually looked in the paper and there was a band auditioning singers. I went to the audition, met these guys, older cats, the most unlikely source of soul that you’d ever find. It was like, five older white guys in a band that has been in existence for almost 30 years called East River Drive.

I auditioned, they picked me up as their singer and for five years I hit the stage all over the city and the tri-state area and I developed a fan base. People really liked what I did as a performer. That’s when I really understood that it was something a little more than a passing fancy, a little bit more than a hobby, a little bit more than something just to do for other people. I could really do it for me. Rox: What has performing rigorously taught you in terms of grinding in the music industry? Miller: Being in East River Drive taught me a diligent work ethic. Out of a 52-week year we would play 32 weeks and 26 weeks of it would be straight. You get your grind on. There was never a month I wouldn’t play at least three weekends a month. They taught me that you have to be a well-oiled machine when it comes to getting on stage and that whatever’s going on in your personal life — whatever — goes on outside of that stage show. For three hours a night you’re giving somebody else a release of their week. For three sets a night you have to be their mental vacation. You can’t bring any issues or anything like that to the stage. It’s really taught me to be very open about how I perform and loose and really connected to the energy of the music itself. I absolutely adore that feeling. For me, it’s a three-hour vacation. O

Carmen Miller takes long road to success.

Double duty Candice Coleman sings two songs on 2012 CD. By Vincent D. Scebbi Toledo Free Press STAR Staff Writer vscebbi@toledofreepress.com

Toledo singer Candice Coleman is quite familiar with the “Holiday Wishes” CD project benefiting Make-A-Wish. The former “American Idol” contestant sang the duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with Chris Brown for last year’s CD and makes two appearances on this year’s. Coleman is back with the Chris Brown Band singing “Santa Baby” as well as with her blues band Buck69 on the track “Merry Christmas Baby.” Coleman said the addition of a stand-up bass adds a “nice layer” and some depth to “Santa Baby.” When performing cover songs, Coleman said there is often a struggle to find the balance between originality and respecting the original track. She said she feels both groups

were able to accomplish that. “Most of the time you want to do something that you can put your own stamp to. But you can’t take it so outside of the realm of the original song because people are going to get mad and be like, ‘Well, that doesn’t sound like that song,’” she said. “They are both just really laid-back and you can relax ... they are easy listening. You can groove on them.” Coleman said she has been performing “Santa Baby” since she was about 20 and it was not hard to record. “It’s been fabulous; she is a breath of fresh air,” Brown said of Coleman. “I have played with so many people around town. When I play with her, everyone has to stop what they are doing and turn around and listen. She has energy and there is just something about her voice that just catches everybody. I’ve played with a lot of people around town as duos but there is something special about her.” n COLEMAN CONTINUES ON 19

n COLEMAN CONTINUED FROM 18 In 2003, Coleman reached the Top 32 during the second season of “American Idol” before she was eliminated. Brown teaches at the University of Toledo and works locally as a commercial rep. She said her experiences recording last year were great and she continued to work with sound engineer Christopher Stoll on other projects. Buck69 is an electric blues and roots rock band that describes its sound as “Like Bob Seger meeting Jonny Lang in a juke joint to talk about Eric Clapton.” The band features Tom Clawson, his son Alex Clawson, Coleman, Buzz Anderson, B.J. Love, David Alan and John Sevilla.

Buck69 recorded “Mery Christmas Baby,” which has been performed by artists such as Charles Brown, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Otis Redding, Bonnie Raitt and B.B. King. Make-A-Wish has a special place in Coleman’s heart. When she was 15 years old, a friend was diagnosed with leukemia and Make-A-Wish granted his wish, Coleman said. “[My friend] was super into guitars and Jimi Hendrix so they did some really, really neat stuff for him,” she said. “For that reason, Make-A-Wish is absolutely a fantastic organization and will always hold a special little place in my heart. I’m really, really honored to be asked to do it again.” O

Got it covered

Nine Lives records Phil Spector classic for charity CD. By Mike Bauman Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer mbauman@toledofreepress.com

Nine Lives lead singer Jake Pilewski never pictured himself in a cover band. Turns out it’s been one of the most positive musical decisions he’s made. “I got so into the writing that I said, ‘You know, I would never be in a cover band. I would rather play a dive bar the rest of my life making chump change a night just as long as I’m playing originals,’” Pilewski said. “Well, then reality sets in and you start realizing, ‘Oh, I’ve got bills and I’ve got to do this and I’ve got to do this.’” The band covers an upbeat version of Phil Spector’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on the “Holiday Wishes 2” CD. Formerly of local band Highland, which also featured Nine Lives members Mike Toth and Mike Haskins, Pilewski said he didn’t consider playing covers an option until he went to a music convention in Harrisburg, Pa., where Fuel vocalist Brett Scallions was speaking. “At the time he had just left Fuel, and he was telling this story about how Fuel was a big cover band all around Harrisburg, Pa., for years,”

Pilewski said of Scallions. “And he said in Harrisburg, they were artsy, but still these places were going to hire bands to play what the bar crowd wanted to hear, which was cover music.” That experience, as well as seeing Cincinnati cover band The Menus live at Put-In-Bay, was enough to convince Pilewski to give covers a shot. He and Haskins left Highland nearly three years ago to join Toth in Nine Lives, a move that proved to be fruitful. It wasn’t long before Nine Lives was playing at some of Toledo’s bigger bars and events, including fundraisers at The Blarney Irish Pub and Mud Hens’ Opening Day. “It definitely was worth it right off the bat when we started seeing the reaction from people,” Pilewski said. “It made the whole decision to start playing cover music a lot easier.” Nine Lives is comprised of Pilewski, drummer Toth, lead guitarist Haskins, Tim Bauer (guitar/piano/sax/harmonica/vocals), bassist Chad Singleton and Bethany Wook. Part of what has helped Nine Lives find so much local success is its versatility. The band covers everything from 1950s era music to pop, classic rock, blues, dance, country and Top 40 hits. “Whether they were born in the ’50s or they

were born in 1989, I mean, we have a little bit of something for everybody,” Pilewski said. “They always say, ‘You can’t make everybody happy,’ but we come pretty close to it at least

throughout the night, as long as people stick around the whole set.” For more information, visit facebook.com/ ninelivestoledo. O

Stars of wonder

Sanderlings sing “We Three Kings” for holiday CD. By Matt Liasse Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer mliasse@toledofreepress.com

The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards described songwriting in his autobiography, “Life.” His words serve as inspiration for Toledo band The Sanderlings. In the book, Richards mentions “vowel movements,” the “oohs and the ees and the ahs … without the consonants” in rock songs, saying songs are made catchier by using words that don’t make sense. The Sanderlings’ guitarist and vocalist Josh Evans said the group’s music features many such “vowel movements.” “Those lyrics don’t make a lick of sense,” Evans said. Bassist Jonathan Rodebaugh said some songs on the band’s tongue-in-cheek album, “Awesome Opossum,” which was released in October, are obnoxious on purpose. “It’s weird if we have a song that’s too serious,” Rodebaugh said. “If you take yourself too seriously as a musician, then you’re Bono.” The Sanderlings consists of Evans and Rodebaugh with Jon Kynard on drums and Ben Mas-

ters also on guitar and vocals. The Sanderlings, featuring Jesse Hawkins, recored an amped-up version of “We Three Kings” for the “Holiday Wishes 2” CD. The silliness of the band makes it appealing to an unexpected demographic. “Kids have always been strangely attracted to our music,” Masters said. The group played a gig once with a group of kids dancing and singing along in front of the stage. “I felt like ‘The Wiggles,”’ Rodebaugh said. The album isn’t all jokes though. The song “Mr. Heart Attack Man” is about a local headliner the group has had to deal with in the past. Because the headliner changed the order of the bands performing one night, The Sanderlings ended up playing for no audience before the bar was open. The band also explores different sounds, as in the acoustic “Smoke” or “Busch Light Night” which includes Auto-Tune. “It’s like a ‘Seinfeld’-type band, no lessons learned,” Kynard said. Masters said The Sanderlings mostly wants the audience to have a good time. “We just love playing music,” Masters said.

The Sanderlings released “Awesome Opossum” in October. PHOTO COURTESY JONATHAN RODEBAUGH

“Awesome Opossum” was three years in the making. The album took so long to produce because Evans moved to Bend, Ore. He comes back to town to “keep the band name alive,” Rodebaugh said. Rodebaugh said the members are confident in the album. So much so, they took to the streets of Downtown Toledo with a video camera to film strangers’ reactions to hearing the music. The video is used as a promo video on YouTube. “This is my favorite album we’ve put out,”

said Rodebaugh, who wrote most of the album’s lyrics. The album features one of Rodebaugh’s favorite tracks he’s written, “I Want You,” which his wife Amy sings on with Evans. The band members have cited a variety of bands as inspiration, from ABBA to Nirvana to The Beach Boys. “All the greats,” Evans said. For more information, visit www.facebook. com/thesanderlings. O

”A master class all the way around: excellent acting by Daniel Day-Lewis (an Oscar-worthy performance), Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones; impeccable screenplay by Tony Kushner (‘Munich’); beautiful cinematography by Janusz Kaminski (‘War Horse’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’); a quiet and perfect score by John Williams; and Steven Spielberg’s direction is icing on the cake. The release of this movie about the last few months of the 16th president’s life is perfectly timed. A must-see movie.”

Twilight ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ James A. Molnar, TFP film editor:

”Twilight is about the fans. ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ follows this tradition and fans will very much enjoy this send-off. It is true to the story — as well as a movie adaptation can be. It’s hokey and cute and the sparkling vampires are back. Director Bill Condon utilizes the source material to the best of his ability and brings to life one of the best movies of the saga.” (on the “Twilight” scale)

Melody makers TAPESTRY records ‘The First Noel’ for holiday CD. By Brigitta Burks TOLEDO FREE PRESS NEWS EDITOR bburks@toledofreepress.com

TAPESTRY harpist Denise Grupp-Verbon said she and her husband, Michael, have enjoyed doing both “Holiday Wishes” benefit CDs so much they may put out their own Christmas album. “We’re thinking maybe our next CD needs to be a Christmas one,” she said, adding that fans have asked when the duo plans to release a yuletide album in the past. TAPESTRY recorded “The First Noel” for “Holiday Wishes 2.” Last year, the duo recorded “Greensleeves” for the first Make-A-Wish fundraiser CD. “My husband, Michael, who plays the guitar, was the one who picked the tune. He just really liked ‘The First Noel’ and he had been experimenting with an arrangement of it,” GruppVerbon said. To make the song their own, the couple experimented with the timing and allowed their two instruments to work together.

“Local restaurants are the lifeblood of any community. The personal touch and individual attention we provide our guests make your dining experience unique in a way that all chain restaurants unsuccessfully strive to emulate.”

“The harp and guitar together, we sort of share the melody. They’re sort of interwoven together. They’re complementing each other,” Grupp-Verbon said. The track was recorded by Christopher Stoll at Audioflare Productions at Zeta Recording Studios in Holland, who also recorded the duo’s contribution last year. The Grupp-Verbons organize the annual Harp Gathering, a large meet-up of harpists and harp enthusiasts in the spring. The couple met on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and have performed together as a band since April 2000. Helping Make-A-Wish and other children’s charities brings out the best in people, said Grupp-Verbon, who has played the harp since she was 11. “I think that people come together for charities, but most especially when it involves children … children tend to bring the best out in people because they’re innocent,” she said. Given the band’s stage personality, Skoobie Snaks drummer Brad Bury said it seemed appropriate that the group’s contribution to MakeA-Wish benefit CD “Holiday Wishes 2” would be the humorous song “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” “We wanted to record something with our style,” he said. “The original is wacky and we thought it was the perfect song for us.” Randy Brooks wrote the song, which was originally performed by the husband and wife Elmo and Patsy Trigg Shropshire in 1979. The song’s story was eventually filmed as an animated television special. There have also been a number of parody versions recorded. Known for its on-stage costumes and crazy hats, Skoobie Snaks is comprised of Bury on drums, Scott Ballard on keyboards, Mike Coulter on bass and Bob Stevens on guitar. Bury said the group’s cover of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” has a few variations to it. It lacks the “Jingle Bells” introduction, for example, and some “crazy noises” were added to the background. One significant change was instead of singing to send Grandma’s gifts back, they sing that they should keep them, he added. Should Skoobie Snaks ever perform its

cover live, Bury said he could imagine Coulter, who sings on the track and does “a great grandma impersonation,” wearing a grandma wig and glasses. “I could see the rest of the band dressed as an elf, Santa or a reindeer,” he said. “With a song like that, if we would be dressed in our casual clothes, it would be normal, but wearing our costumes, it definitely adds value to the song and makes it more entertaining for all.” One hat in particular Bury wants to see at a Skoobie Snaks show is his 5-year-old son’s elf hat with huge ears. But despite Bury’s pleas, his son refuses to let him take it to a gig. When learning a new song to cover, the members of Skoobie Snaks generally get together, listen to the song a few times and then try to add their own personalities to it, Bury said. The group has been playing gigs in the area for about 17 years and while it’s mostly moved from the bar scene to private events, the members are continually looking for new ways to entertain their audience. “We definitely want to keep people entertained and that’s when we started going to various costume places and buying crazy hats, whether it’s superheroes or whatever, depending on the event,” Bury said. “It continued to grow and we tried to take it to the next level and try not to repeat what we’ve been doing.” O

Party on the roof By Vincent D. Scebbi Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com

Local group The Wanna Bees brings some children’s music to “Holiday Wishes 2” with its song “Party on the Roof.” Band member Chuck Riepenhoff said the song tells the story of a sleepless child anxiously waiting for Santa Claus and the reindeer to land on his roof. The band’s goal for the pop-rock song was that it be lyrically geared toward children while still catchy enough for parents to enjoy. “The concept is geared toward the kids, but we think the music is good old pop-rock. The style is for adults to like,” Riepenhoff said. “It’s a whole movement for the kids’ music market — going to a more catchy pop-rock that the parents would enjoy, but the lyrical content is geared more for the kids.” Riepenhoff, who wears scrubs and a surgical cap while performing under the stage name Doctor Dan, said the song involved a few extras other than himself and Rob Donaldson, who goes by Builder Brad while performing. Bill McDevitt, aka Officer Ollie, who plays bass for The Wanna Bees’ studio work, played bass for the track. In addition, Donaldson’s wife Amy and

The Wanna Bees capture kids’ Christmas Eve excitement.

their son Ryan and daughter Rachael as well as Riepenhoff ’s son Ethan contributed with background vocals and the introduction. Tom Pokornik played the keyboards on the track. Riepenhoff said he was first inspired to form a children’s group in 2002 when watching an episode of “The Wiggles” with his kids. “The songs were good and catchy and the kids were reacting well. I was always into writing and performing music and the concept hit me. I was thinking, ‘This is something I could get into,’ ” he said. Each band member has a stage character with a different profession. The name of the band refers to asking children what they want to be when they grow up. Besides Doctor Dan, Builder Brad and Officer Ollie, there is also Mailman Mike. Riepenhoff said the group’s debut album “Work Together” involves various friends of the characters who help teach children important lessons. Riepenhoff said Toledo Free Press Editor in Chief Michael S. Miller approached him and asked him to contribute to the CD benefiting Make-A-Wish. “2012 has been a very good year for us in terms of getting our name out there,” he said. “There aren’t very many bands who do what we do.” O

Jingle bell rock More holiday music and videos for gift giving. By John Benson Toledo Free Press Star Staff Writer star@toledofreepress.com

The holidays have arrived, which means so has the anxiety of buying the perfect gift for the person who has everything. One easy answer is music. Either you can pick something that fits into their tastes or, even better, make them listen to something that defines your own musical palette. This year’s gift guide selection features plenty of familiar names, a few obscure choices and some holiday music to perhaps make the season special. Take a look at some of these newer releases:

Adult Contemporary

O Sade “Bring Me Home — Live 2011” (Epic) CD/DVD After a 10-year hiatus, smooth jazz/R&B act Sade returned to life with new album “Soldier of Love.” Now the top 10 selling tour has been captured as concert recording, “Bring Me Home — Live 2011.” Sure, you’ll get all of Sade’s hits (“Smooth Operator,” “No Ordinary Love”) but the real marrow of this release is the documentary film exposing the rarely seen singer and band.

Comedy

O “The Carol Burnett Show:

Carol’s

Favorites” (Time Life) DVD Sure, “The Carol Burnett Show” has been hawked in its entirety on late night television for years, but here’s a cheaper alternative that will produce the same gut-busting results. “Carol’s Favorites” includes memorable sketches such as “The Family,” “Mrs. Wiggins” and “The Charwoman,” as well as an awesome musical performance by The Jackson 5. O “The Ernie Kovacs Collection, Vol. 2” (Shout! Factory) DVD We all have that one uncle who is constantly making references to obscure or forgotten 20th-century figures. Well, you can’t go wrong with the three DVD set “The Ernie Kovacs Collection, Vol. 2,” which includes entire episodes of the influential comedian’s NBC morning show and game show, as well as interviews and sketches. O Doug Stanhope “Before Turning The Gun On Himself ” (Roadrunner) CD/DVD Raunchy and fearless funnyman Doug Stanhope’s 10th release may be his best yet at capturing his anger-driven social commentary brand of humor. Specifically hilarious — and decidedly for mature audiences only — are bits called “Hangover,” “My Piss Stinks” and “It’s a Party, Not Daycare, Asshole.” n MUSIC CONTINUES ON 31

Compilations

O Various Artists, “Fifty Shades of Grey: The Classical Album” (EMI) CD For those in need of aural assistance to fully experience the naughty pleasure of the erotic “Fifty Shades of Grey series,” an accompanying album of classical music has been released featuring the likes of Bach, Chopin and Verdi. To be fair, if “Fifty Shades of Grey” doesn’t do it on its own, perhaps you need Dr. Oz.

Country

O Dolly Parton “An Evening With Dolly Live” (Cracker Barrel) CD/DVD Even though it’s been decades since Dolly Parton last scored a radio hit, the country music legend can still pack in audiences, is as evident with her new concert release capturing a 2008 London concert. The show features classics such as “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors,” while serious fans will love the unreleased concert recordings of “Shattered Image” and “My Tennessee Mountain Home.”

Holiday

O “The Dean Martin Christmas Show” (Time Life) DVD Lately it seems as though Dean Martin is releasing more material nearly 20 years after his death than when he was alive. Now available is an entire 1968 holiday special featuring an amazing

array of guests — Lucille Ball, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Benny, George Burns, Johnny Carson, Bob Newhart and Dom DeLuise. Pour yourself a highball and enjoy this time capsule. O Edie Adams “The Edie Adams Christmas Album featuring Ernie Kovacs” (Omnivore) CD Here’s a Christmas album that belongs in a

TOLEDOFREEPRESS.COM / NOV. 21, 2012 n 31

gift alongside the aforementioned “The Ernie Kovacs Collection, Vol. 2.” Edie Adams, who was married to comedian and television host Kovacs, would often sing holiday music on his show. Now for the first time, Adams’ songs have been released. Invariably the material is warm and harkens back to another era. O Scotty McCreery “Christmas With Scotty McCreery” (Mercury) CD “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery adds his thick baritone to holiday classics such as “Let it Snow,” “Jingle Bells” and “Winter Wonderland.” What makes this seasonal album stand out is new material, including “Christmas Comin’ Round Again” and “Christmas in Heaven.” O Sugar & The Hi-Lows “Snow Angel” (Ready Set Records) CD Rockabilly act Sugar & The Hi-Lows brings its hipster cool retro soul sound into the holiday season on its EP “Snow Angel,” which contains five original tracks along with the obligatory “Jingle Bells.” Americana-loving folk will dig the dreamy title track and the mid-tempo “Home for the Holiday.” O Various Artists “A Very Special Christmas: 25th years, Bringing Joy to the World” (Big Machine Records) CD

A quarter of a century after U2 and Bob Seger rocked a “A Very Special Christmas,” an updated compilation finds a decidedly Nashville slant with Vince Gill (“Breath of Heaven [Mary’s Song]), Martina McBride (“Please Come Home For Christmas”) and Rascal Flatts (“Mary, Did You Know”). However, the one track that we’ll likely be hearing for years to come every holiday season is Train’s pop-driven “Joy to the World,” which is an ingenious mashup with its prior hit “Calling All Angels.” O Various Artists, “Average Joes Muddy Christmas” (Average Joe Entertainment) CD Something old (Montgomery Gentry and John Anderson), something new (LoCash Cowboys and Colt Ford) and a whole lot of annoying is what country fans will get out of the holiday release “An Average Joes Muddy Christmas.” Defined by The Lacs’ rap-meets-fiddle “Santa in a 4-Wheel Drive,” the seasonal compilation is targeting the quintessential off-roading country music fan with no taste in music.

Metal

O “Blackmore’s Night A Knight in New York” (UDR) CD/DVD Deep Purple and Rainbow alum Ritchie Blackmore is keeping his name alive with the release of the minstrel-friendly “A Knight in New York,” which finds the singer-guitarist and his wife-singer Candice Night performing a concert filled with folk rock. However, the show is less Mumford & Sons and more the miniature Stonehenge scene from “This is Spinal Tap.” n MUSIC CONTINUES ON 32

n MUSIC CONTINUED FROM 31 O Dio “The Very Beast of Dio Vol. 2” (Niji Entertainment Group) CD The follow-up to the gold-selling 2000 compilation “The Very Beast of Dio,” this second installment offers die-hard fans hits (we use that word loosely) from the latter part of his career. To be fair, “Vol. 1” (with “Rainbow in the Dark” and “Holy Diver”) is the better choice to remember the influential metal singer who passed in 2010. O Judas Priest “Screaming For Vengeance 30th Anniversary Edition” (Columbia) CD/DVD You’ve got another thing coming if you think Judas Priest isn’t going to spend its golden years living off the past. Rob Halford and company have unearthed a fan’s must-have CD/DVD combination with not only a digitally remastered original album but live tracks to boot from the era. The true highlight is Judas Priest’s 1983 US Festival show and previously unreleased track “Prisoner of Your Eyes.” O Motorhead “The Wörld Is Ours — Vol. 2 — Anyplace Crazy as Anywhere Else” (UDR) CD/DVD There’s a good argument to be made that Motörhead’s “The Wörld Is Ours — Vol. 1 — Everywhere Further Than Everyplace Else” accurately covered the entire Lemmy spectrum. Still, the Grammy Award-winning act would have been remiss to not release a nearly exact replica follow-up this year in the form of “The Wörld Is Ours — Vol. 2 — Anyplace Crazy As Anywhere Else.” The CD-DVD combo includes a 2011 Wacken concert head-

line appearance as well as highlights from the Sonisphere and Rio shows. O Stryper “Live in Indonesia at Java Rockin’ Land” MVD Visual DVD If you’ve been worried about what you were going to give your die-hard Stryper fan for Christmas this year, aside from advice to lose the mullet, here’s the gift you’ve been waiting for. Either Indonesia loves them some Stryper or Indonesians turn out for any group that includes the archipelago on its itinerary. Nevertheless, “Live in Indonesia at Java Rockin’ Land” is for the special kind of metal fan.

Reggae

O Various Artists “Reggae Golden Jubilee — Origins of Jamaican Music” (VP Records) CD For that one reggae-loving, patchoulismelling, rastaman-wannabe friend of yours who for years has dragged you to one Shaggy and Marley sibling concert after another, here’s your perfect thank you — a four-disc set that details reggae’s growth from Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff to Buju Banton and Sean Paul. Think of it this way: It’s a lot cheaper than flying to Jamaica.

Rock

O Bob Dylan & The Band “Down in the Flood” (Chrome Dreams) DVD The fact that the DVD box for “Down in the Flood” reads “This film is not authorized by Bob Dylan, The Band or representatives thereof ” kind of says it all. n MUSIC CONTINUES ON 33

“Holiday Wishes 2: River Of Stars” is available at Panera Bread locations and selected Levis Commons stores. n MUSIC CONTINUED FROM 32 Rare footage and archive interviews aside, this cursory documentary examining the relationship between the iconic ’60s folk singer and his thenunknown backing band who both would become influential ’70s acts offers very little to fans of both. O Danko Jones “Bring on the Mountain” (Bad Taste Records) DVD Just as Canadian rock act Danko Jones hasn’t let a lack of mainstream success keep the band from recording and touring stateside, the trio isn’t letting the same hurdles keep it from releasing its 90-minute documentary “Bring on the Mountain.” In addition to interviews with Lemmy, Elijah Wood, Ralph Macchio and Mike Watt, the DVD includes live footage and band videos. Invariably, this is best viewed only by Danko Jones followers. O Don McLean “American Troubadour” (Time Life) DVD Seen earlier this year on PBS, the singersongwriter Don McLean documentary “American Troubadour” pays tribute to the “American Pie” artist. In addition to live performances of his aforementioned ubiquitous biggest song, as well as hits “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” and “Crying,” the three-hour program features interviews with Brian Wilson and R.E.M.’s Mike Mills

and performances of his songs by Elvis Costello and Fred Astaire. O Elvis Presley “Prince From Another Planet” (SONY Legacy) CD/DVD A deluxe 40th anniversary two CD/ DVD presentation of Elvis’ historic return to New York City. Captures two full shows at Madison Square Garden, plus a hand-held film of the afternoon show and a 20-minute news conference. Includes a major new essay by Lenny Kaye. Highlights include “Proud Mary,” “Love Me Tender,” “Suspicious Minds” and “An American Trilogy.” O Incubus “HQ Live Special Edition” (Legacy) CD/DVD In the summer of 2011, alternative act Incubus decided to revisit its past (“Wish You Were Here,” “Nice to Know You,” “Megalomaniac” and more) with a week’s worth of intimate Web shows emanating from a Los Angeles gallery. While such a shameless walk down memory lane runs the risk of sappy nostalgia or a money grab, the CD-DVD acts as a perfect “Thank You” to Incubus fans who get an up-close-and-personal view of their favorite band. O Led Zeppelin “Celebration Day” (Omniverse Vision) DVD

TOLEDOFREEPRESS.COM / NOV. 21, 2012 n 33

It turns out Zeppelin fans hoping to see the band one more time live should have spent thousands of dollars to fly overseas to catch the group’s one-off 2007 reunion gig at O2 Arena in London. For those who missed it (like all of us), you can experience the magic and fire on the recently released concert DVD “Celebration Day.” This swansong effort is invariably bittersweet. Simply put, the blues-based band sounds amazing (“Black Dog” and “Ramble On”), but it’s too bad fans young and old can’t witness the band in action firsthand. O Meat Loaf “The Guilty Pleasure Tour” (Concert One Ltd.) DVD The good news is this latest Meat Loaf concert release, which was recorded earlier this year in Australia, doesn’t find the “Bat Out of Hell” singer tackling “God Bless America.” The bad news is he does do his hits, which to be fair include a few guilty pleasures. O Neil Diamond “Hot August Night 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition” (Geffen) CD Prior to Neil Diamond’s 10 sold-out shows at the Greek Theatre in 1972, the singer-songwriter was an artist on the rise. Afterward, as captured on the legendary concert release “Hot August Night,” Diamond was a star. Now the “Sweet Caroline” singer is revisiting his definitive con-

cert album with unreleased material (“A Modern Day Version of Love” and Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today”). O Rage Against The Machine “Rage Against The Machine — XX 20th Anniversary Box Set” (Legacy Recordings) CD/DVD Definitive hip-hop and heavy metal act Rage Against The Machine celebrates the 20th anniversary of its self-titled debut effort release with a massive compilation that includes its original demo, early concert footage and a 2010 London concert. The highlights include rare tracks such as “The Narrows,” which is an early version of album track “Fistful of Steel,” and unreleased songs “Darkness of Greed” and “Clear the Lane.” O “Robert Plant & The Band of Joy: Live From the Artists Den” (Universal) DVD One look at Robert Plant performing with his Americana act The Band of Joy in the recently released DVD “Live From the Artists Den” and you can see why the Led Zeppelin singer eschews any reunion talk with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. Plant is having the time of his life performing modern day folk. More so, Zep fans will enjoy his reworked versions of “Houses of the Holy,” “Ramble On” and “Black Dog.” O

The rivalry Toledo is ‘ground zero’ for OSU, UM rivalry. By Mike Bauman TOLEDO FREE PRESS STAR STAFF WRITER mbauman@toledofreepress.com

When it comes to the annual border battle between Ohio State and the University of Michigan, the city of Toledo just may be at the core of the rivalry. Located about 45 minutes south of Ann Arbor and roughly two hours north of Columbus, the Glass City contains a large contingent of both Buckeyes and Wolverines fans, not to mention numerous alumni of each university. “This is ground zero for the rivalry,” said Rocky Roemer, who serves on the executive board of the Ohio State University Alumni Club of Lucas County (OSUACLC). “Toledo, Ohio, is the only place in the world that has half, roughly, Ohio State fans and half Michigan fans. You won’t find that anywhere else.”

n RIVALRY CONTINUED FROM 34 An Ohio State alum who attended Evergreen High School, Roemer likes to joke that attending OSU is not a decision in his family, but rather a genetic predisposition. “We’ve had over 30 family members attend Ohio State, and I presently have two daughters who attend The Ohio State University,” Roemer said. “So it runs real deeply within my family.” The president and CEO of Roemer Insurance, Roemer said his father and former OSU football player Robert “Bob” Momsen were instrumental in reviving the OSUACLC roughly 20 years ago when it had gone nearly dormant. The local Buckeyes club has met monthly at the offices of Roemer Insurance ever since. Today, the OSUACLC is actively involved in both the state and the local community. As part of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s

Adopt-A-Highway program, the club cleans up roadside trash along the northernmost two miles of US-23. “From the Michigan border down two miles is our stretch of road that we pick up,” Roemer said. “We like to say we pick up the trash that blows in from north of Ohio’s border with that state to the north.” In addition, the OSUACLC provides financial aid to future Buckeyes from Northwest Ohio through the Robert Momsen Scholarship Fund, which was established in 1993. The scholarship is named after Momsen, who died in 2010 at the age of 80. The fund began with about $15,000 and now has a principal balance of more than $270,000 thanks to donations, contributions and club activities. “Each year we award monies to Lucas County high schoolers who are heading down to Columbus to matriculate at Ohio State,” Roemer said. n RIVALRY CONTINUES ON 36

n RIVALRY CONTINUED FROM 35 “We grow that scholarship through fundraising efforts. The signature effort each year is our OSU Alumni Club Golf Outing — the Robert Momsen Scramble — which happens every year in August.” A standout football player at Libbey High School Momsen went on to play at OSU and in the NFL. He was an integral part of the classic 1950 matchup between the Buckeyes and Wolverines known as the “Snow Bowl.” He and his older brother Tony, who played center for Michigan, both blocked punts in the game. While Momsen’s block led to an Ohio State field goal, Tony’s block rolled into the end zone, where he fell on it to result in the contest’s only touchdown and a 9-3 victory for UM. “What’s awesome about that is that you had two Toledo boys, one on either side,” Roemer said of the “Snow Bowl.” “That tells you a little bit of something about the strength of the rivalry and how it really does reside in Toledo, Ohio.”

Roemer and the OSUACLC aren’t the only proud alums and fans in Lucas County, though. Over at the University of Michigan Club of Toledo there is also a storied history. The club’s president, Jeremy Miller, is a St. John’s Jesuit grad who played under former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr in the late 1990s. “I was a long snapper from ’97 to 2001,” said Miller, a senior leasing manager at JMS Real Estate Industries Inc. “I redshirted the year we won a national championship in 1997 and then I was a part of three Big Ten championships while I was there, so I’ve obviously got a love for the university. I would do anything for Michigan because of everything that they’ve done for me.” Miller became president of the club in June and has seen its growth since joining in 2007. Both affiliated with and chartered by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan (AAUM), the UM Club of Toledo is one of more than 75 Michigan alumni chapters across the country and is one of the oldest, Miller said. However, there was a time when the club wasn’t doing well. “When I first came on the board we were in danger of losing our charter through the university because we just weren’t attracting enough

members or having enough events,” Miller said. Instead of having events centered primarily around sports, the club became more diverse with its activities, including a recent event where a UM professor came down to Toledo to speak about the drama school. That talk was followed by a trip to the Stranahan Theater to see “Billy Elliot.” In addition to a weekly luncheon, the UM Club of Toledo has a community service day each year, which usually coincides with Michigan’s National Day of Service. The UM Club of Toledo also has a scholarship it awards annually to an area student headed to UM, a fund Miller has made efforts to grow. Last year, Miller organized a scholarship fundraiser at Central Park West. Nearly $10,000 was raised in what ended up being the club’s largest attended event, including Carr. The club’s turnaround resulted in it receiving the 2012 Award of Excellence from AAUM. “It was a great success, and so now we’re working on getting [Michigan head coach Brady] Hoke down here because coach Hoke was my long snapping coach at Michigan,” Miller said. “So him and I stay in contact, just trying to get him down hopefully sometime early next year to come down for an evening and talk Michigan.”

Future collaboration?

In recent history, the OSUACLC and UM Club of Toledo have operated independently of one another, but according to Roemer that wasn’t always the case. There used to be an “Ohio State-Michigan Smoker” wherein cigar-smoking partisans from both sides would get together and razz each other in a playful, roast-type format. “It was really cool because that was Ohio State fans and Michigan fans gathered together in a friendly, rivalry atmosphere, kind of a party atmosphere,” Roemer said. “In fact, I think we should see about reviving that because that was just a cool tradition that lasted for, I’d say, many decades.” “I’d be open to having something like that [again],” Miller said. “It’d be good to get both fan bases together and have a little smoker, so to speak. I’m not opposed to it. We just haven’t had a lot of steps in that direction to really collaborate.” Ohio State and Michigan peacefully coexisting? Only in Toledo. An Old West End home decorated for last year’s Tours de Noel. PHOTO COURTESY KENT ILLENDEN

Glitter and Glo, Tours de Noel light up Old West End By Sarah Ottney TOLEDO FREE PRESS Star MANAGING EDITOR sottney@toledofreepress.com

After a hiatus of several years, Glitter and Glo, a holiday lights and decorations contest in the Old West End, is being revived. “And how exciting is that?” said Glitter and Glo chairperson Rick Kramer. “To see the neighborhood glow again. I was asked if I was interested in bringing it back and I said, ‘Absolutely!’ I love it for the neighborhood. I just love the name of it. It’s a fun event. Fun and festive.” Judging will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 29. Prizes will be awarded to the top three houses whose decorations are deemed most beautiful, creative and original, Kramer said. “We have three judges from outside the neighborhood so they won’t know the home owners or houses,” Kramer said. “One knows about the arts, one knows about historical houses and one is kind of a mediator. “I’m really excited. We’ve gotten some quite unique things in years past. Millions of lights. Better than the zoo. Plus, it draws neighbors together. That’s what makes the Old West End so unique. We are a community over here. These houses were made for the holidays.”

Tree-lighting

The Glitter and Glo winners will be announced during the Old West End’s tree-lighting event, set for Dec. 1 in Commons Park, near Bancroft Street and Robinwood Avenue. The ceremony will kick off with a visit from Santa Claus at 3:30 p.m. followed by the tree-lighting at 4:30 p.m. There will also be carolers, refresh-

ments from Black Kite Coffee & Pies and more, said Kent Illenden, publicity chair of the Old West End’s annual Tours de Noel. “It’s just a bunch of us neighbors getting together, a nice social gathering that’s open to everyone,” Illenden said.

Tours de Noel

Also coming up in the Old West End is the neighborhood’s annual Tours de Noel, set for noon to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and hosted by The Women of the Old West End. This year’s tour will feature five historic houses as well as the Milmine-Stewart House and First Congregational Church. Bus transportation will be available all day. The houses are the Mansion View Inn, 2035 Collingwood Blvd.; Sturges-Hutton/Bigelow Home, 2062 Robinwood Ave.; Mull-Geer Home, 2553 Glenwood Ave.; Mill-Bloomer Home, 635 Stratford Place; and David L. Stine House, 2333 Scottwood Ave. One of the houses will feature carved carousel houses and other wood carvings, Illenden said. “That offers in itself a unique feature,” he said. The Milmine-Stewart House, 2001 Collingwood Blvd., houses the Toledo History Museum. The annual gift boutique, featuring local vendors, will be set up at First Congregational Church, 2315 Collingwood Blvd., from noon to 7 p.m. Also hosted by the church will be the annual Arboretum Cookie Walk to benefit the Old West End Arboretum. Lunch will be served at the church from noon to 6:30 p.m. Presale tickets are available for $12 at Lily’s On Main at Levis Commons; David Swesey Florist Inc., 1643 Tollgate Road, Maumee; Georgette’s

Grounds & Gifts, 311 Conant St., Maumee; Schramm’s Flowers, 3157 W. Central Ave.; Color Concepts, 6725 W. Central Ave., Sylvania; Downtown Latte, 44 S. St. Clair St.; Black Kite Coffee & Pies, 2499 Collingwood Blvd.; or Brooks Florist, 5739 N. Main St., Sylvania. Tickets will also be available at each site on the day of the event. Cost is $15 for the full tour or $5 for a single venue. Seniors 55 and older are $10. Children 13 and younger are free with an adult. Black Kite will offer specials all day, including 50 cents off for all ticketholders, Illenden said. For ticket information call (419) 244-4921 or visit www.womenoftheoldwestendinc.com. “We really do have some wonderful houses this year and they will be decorated to the hilt,” Illenden said. “It just creates a wonderful Christmas atmosphere and gets people in the spirit. It’s just a really cool event.” Plus, the return of Glitter and Glo means the historic Old West End should look even more festive than usual for Tours de Noel, Illenden said. “We’re really promoting it in the neighborhood,” Illenden said of Glitter and Glo. “Certainly by the time the tours happen the neighborhood will be all lit up. Some people go crazy with lights. There is always a lot of good energy down here in the neighborhood when Christmas happens.” Founded in 1969, the Women of the Old West End is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting neighborhood preservation and fostering friendship and economic stability within the nationally designated historic district, according to its website.
