As children, many of us were admonished by our parents with “Cleanliness is next to godliness,” perhaps an attempt to get us to wash behind our ears! This adage first appeared in a printed sermon by John Wesley in 1769, in which the minister wrote, “Slovenliness is no part of religion. Cleanliness is indeed next to godliness.” Perhaps you think that the old saying, “God helps those who help themselves” is another Biblical truth.
