TIDBITS® BEATING by Janet Spencer

HEART ATTACK FACTS • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic. • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. A police officer attempts to stop a car for Tidbits Laughs speeding and the guy gradually increases his

speed until he's topping 100 mph. The man eventually realizes he can't escape and finally pulls over. The cop approaches the car and says, "It's been a long day and my shift is almost over, so if you can give me a good excuse for your behavior, I'll let you go." The guy thinks for a few seconds and then says, "My wife ran away with a cop about a week ago. I thought you might be that officer trying to give her back!"

PAPER PART 1 On December 26, 1854, John Beardsley showed paper samples made from wood pulp to the editor of the Buffalo, NY "Democrat" who wrote an article exclaiming over how wonderful the newfangled paper was. Come along with Tidbits as we look at the history of paper! PAPER BASICS • Paper has been described as "70% wood and 30% chemistry." Modern paper is made by having a log chipped, digested, refined, washed, screened, pressed, heated, and rolled. • For centuries the most popular writing surface was parchment, made from animal hides. The Egyptians used fibers from papyrus stems that were soaked, pounded, and laid in mats to dry. • In the year 105 A.D., a clerk in China pulverized rags, cooked them, then dipped a screen into the liquid and let the fibers dry. This was the method used to form paper for the next 1,500 years. Previous to this, silk had been used as a writing surface, but because of this new invention, China was able to export more silk, leading to an economic boom. • Rags were the main source of papermaking fiber for centuries. The result was a thick, gray paper that was often streaked with colors from the old clothing that was used to make it. PRESIDENTIAL QUOTES:

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
