TIDBITS® BEATING by Janet Spencer

HEART ATTACK FACTS • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic. • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. The History Channel

• On Sept. 28, 1542, Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sails into present-day San Diego Bay during his explorations on behalf of Spain. Despite his reports of the appealing California coastline, the first Spanish settlement was not established in California for more than 200 years, when Father Junipero Serra founded his mission at San Diego in 1769.

versial call at second base. The officials ruled that Giants first baseman Fred Merkle was out because he failed to touch second base, a call that has been disputed ever since.

• On Sept. 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which sets a date (Jan. 1, 1863) for the freedom of more than 3 million black slaves in the United States and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery.

CHEESEBURGERS (continued): • In case an ordinary cheeseburger isn’t your “cup of tea,” the Texas-based restaurant chain known as the Twisted Root Burger Company offers a variety of unusual game burgers, including venison, kangaroo, beaver, ostrich, emu, boar, alligator, and camel burgers. • How about a cheeseburger that uses glazed doughnuts in place of a bun? Nicknamed The Luther after singer/songwriter Luther Vandross, who had a weakness for this burger, it can total between 800 and 1,500 calories. You can cut the caloric intake by eliminating the chocolate-covered bacon. • If you’re feeling really hungry, stop by the BGR Burger Joint in Washington, D.C. and order up The 9-Pounder. This cheeseburger’s final weight is actually 15.4 lbs. after being topped with two heads of lettuce, eight tomatoes, three onions, and four whole pickles. Although it can feed between 10 and 15 people, if one person can eat the whole thing in one sitting, it’s free. The restaurant generously includes a free bottle of Maalox. • New York City’s Serendipity 3 restaurant offers Le Burger Extravagant, a Japanese Wagyu beef burger infused with white truffle butter, seasoned with smoked Pacific sea salt, topped with hand-formed cheddar cheese, black truffles, and a fried quail egg. The bun is topped with caviar and a diamond-encrusted toothpick. This lunch will set you back $295, and be sure to call 48 hours in advance to order. • How can Las Vegas’ Burger Brasserie charge $777 for their 777 Burger? It’s a combination of Kobe beef and Maine lobster topped with caramelized onions, imported Brie cheese, crispy prosciutto, and 100-year aged balsamic vinegar. The price is a little high because this entrée includes a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne.
