HEART ATTACK FACTS • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic. • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. • It was 19th-century Cuban poet and revolutionary Jose Marti who made the following sage observation: "Barricades of ideas are worth more than barricades of stones." • When you think of dangerous occupations, the jobs that immediately come to mind are probably firefighter and police officer. You might be surprised to learn, then, that in New York City, the fatality rate for garbage collectors is twice as high as it is for members of the NYPD. • A pregnant goldfish is known as a twit. • The U.S. Open, which takes place at the end of summer every year, is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, beginning in 1881 with a men's singles competition. The modern competition, of course, now includes men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. That's a lot of tennis -- and a lot of balls. During the two weeks of the

championship, approximately 70,000 tennis balls are used. • In 2012, at a hospital in Ireland, twin girls set a Guinness World Record when they were born 87 days apart -- and they confounded medical experts' gloomy prognosis by both surviving. • If you make a serious study of Hungarian gypsies, you probably already know that you're a tziganologist. • The flag of Ireland and the flag of Cote d'Ivoire are nearly identical, with vertical stripes of green, white and orange. There are only two minor differences: 1) The Irish flag has the green stripe on the left and the orange stripe on the right, while Cote d'Ivoire has the two colors reversed; and 2) the Irish flag is slightly longer. *** Thought for the Day: "The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." -Gen. George Patton

In celebration of National Guacamole Day on September 16, Tidbits looks into the facts on the avocado. • The word “avocado” comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl. The ancient Aztecs prepared guacamole in a molcajete, which was a mortar and pestle tool carved from volcanic rock. Clear back in the 1500s when Spanish explorers encountered the Aztecs, that civilization was making ahuaca-mulli, which translates “avocado mixture.” • Native to Central and South America, cultivation of avocados in the United States began the early 1900s. Major producers of this fruit are Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Colombia, and the state of California, which grows 90% of America’s crop. There are about 7,000 avocado groves in the Golden State, with San Diego County designated the Avocado Capital of the U.S. • Lots of folks think that the avocado is a vegetable, but it’s actually the fruit of the Persea Americana tree, a tall evergreen that grows up to 65 feet in height. One tree can produce about 50 avocados a year. The fruits will not ripen on the tree, and must be picked in order to initiate the ripening process. The avocado, a singleseeded berry, has been nicknamed the alligator pear because of its shape and rough green skin. • We often think of the banana as having the highest measure of potassium, while in fact, there is twice the potassium in one avocado than there is in one banana, 975 mg. compared to 487 mg. The avocado also has one of the highest amounts of protein in a fruit, with 4 grams in one avocado. One medium avocado also has 10 grams of fiber.
