Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess... Our Princess and the Pea photoshot began with a casual conversation between Natalie (from Petite Bijou) and myself...I remarked how her Vintage Toile collection range reminded me of the story and it really just grew from that. After an initial meet up to discuss what we envisioned, Natalie and I set out to source other handmade people to be a part of the photoshoot. Before we knew it we had a gorgeous group of women who shared our vision of a beautiful outdoors Princess and the Pea photoshoot. we selected a spot framed by two beautiful African flame trees that would also provide backlighting from the afternoon sun, offering the perfect light to capture the images... The first people we were lucky enough to bring on board were De, Natalie Woods (two Natalies!) and Flavia. Natalie(1) knew De from another shoot they had worked on together and we both admired De’s portfolio of natural light images. Natalie(2) from Zinnia Floral Designs contributed a story for our wedding issue earlier this year. She creates the most stunning floral designs. Our next task was to find a location that would provide the perfect backdrop for our shoot. As it turned out a family friend owns the beautiful Oriel Park Equestrian Centre in Henley Brook...and we couldn’t have asked for a more gorgeous setting. With the help of Deanna’s expert eye, we selected a spot framed by two beautiful African flame trees that would also provide backlighting from the afternoon sun, offering the perfect light to capture our images. Next we set out to find outfits for the prince and princess. The princesses crown is from Joallie Petit’s gorgeous new collection and the princes crown was created by Natalie from Petite Bijou especially for this shoot. The princesses dress was custom made by Yumminess Textiles and the princes shirt was handmade by Doodah. Naturally Natalie’s gorgeous quilts (which were the inspiration for the shoot) featured. And a callout for more quilts caught the eye of Julie from Kate Lauren Designs, who sent us a beautiful cot quilt from her Ashleigh Layne collection in the perfect shade of green. The weather on the day of the shoot couldn’t have been more perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Natlie & I arrived at around one in the afternoon to start setting up. The bed frame was borrowed from Natalie’s neighbour and the dresser was a lucky find at the recycling centre in Balcatta! Flavia arrived soon after to start styling the dessert table with her decadent macarons and cupcakes along with scrumptious cookies from Cookie Dough Biscuits. Natalie from Zinnia Floral Designs shortly followed with the gorgeous bouquet of green Wimbledon roses, hot pink David Austin Roses, Lilac Hellebores, green amaranthus, pink astible and pink peonies. And the arrangement for the dessert table, which featured lilac stock, hot pink David Austin roses, pink blushing bride, pink astible and green amaranthus. The crystal chandelier hanging above the bed was finished with the gorgeous green amaranthus and lilac helebores. The shoot began at around 5pm, just as the sun began to set and finished two hours later once the sun had dipped behind the trees and darkness encroached. O
nce upon a time in a faraway place there lived a Cake Decorator and a Graphic Designer who had the idea to create a magical and modern Hansel & Gretel woodlands feast for the eyes and the sweet tooth! Our concept for Hansel & Gretel was for a modern twist on the old and wonderfully
magical tale. We wanted it to be about how a child’s fantasy could become a reality and by using a natural setting to create the atmosphere.

As the setting had the browns and greens of nature, we opted for yellow to be our focal colour and wow did it ever pop! The venue was one of the main focuses. It needed to be somewhere a little gloomy, a lot of natural woodland as well as the beauty of old relic buildings – we found it in our own neighbourhood. A quick location check and all those boxes were ticked, we had found the perfect place where nature could provide us with our props! As the setting had the browns and greens of nature, we opted for yellow to be our focal colour and wow did it ever pop! The venue was set, but the photos needed to be just right! Tanya from Tindale Images was the perfect person for this job. Her beautifully captured images created the vignettes we were after! The gloom of the setting matched with the glorious colours of the sweets made this shoot what it needed to be – whimsically picture perfect! These

Beautifully whimsical and modern printables by Pretty & Print included lots of different touches that added that little bit more – including iron on labels for muslin trail bags, designed paper for wrapping treats as well as invitations, signs and giant co-ordinated lollipops.

There is nothing more whimsical, more evocative or more beloved of childhood than the timeless fairy tale, which makes it the perfect companion to an inspired children’s shoot. Vintage Pie stylist Jessica Lim breaks down some of our favourite folk stories and the design principles they inherently recommend.
The Princess and the Pea Hans Christian Anderson’s story fascinates young readers, in particular little girls, captivated by the fabulous image of twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds, juxtaposed against the tiny reality of a pea. Scale and size are the morals of the story here: sit your little princess atop a tower of vintage suitcases or soft furnishings for a fresh, modern nod to the tale, or highlight little hands with small, interesting objects such as chess pieces, thimbles and seeds (once they no longer want to ingest these things, naturally).
Hansel and Gretel No fairy tale sticks in mind more than that of Hansel and Gretal, purely for the wow factor of that candy-coloured (and covered) house in the woods. Bright fun colour + lollies + kids are the holy trinity when it comes to photos, and, you will find, especially useful in bribing your subjects! A play on the Hansel and Gretel theme would be super sweet for a brother and sister shoot, holding hands and clutching lollipops in a fabulous woodsy location.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears A firm favourite by merit of its winning repetition, the story of Goldilocks and the example of the Rule of Three therein will make your prop groupings not too sparse, not too busy, but just right. Also, be inspired by the homely utensils in those well-known illustrations- wooden spoons make fabulous comic-sized, inexpensive props for kids, and are especially funky dipped in neon paint or wrapped in patterned washi paper.

meet helen... Poss & Wom is the brain child of mine, Helen Shadforth, a Queensland based mum of two and professional graphic designer. I have been a designer for over 13 years and ran my own studio for 3 years before scaling down to have a family.
describe your style... I always struggle describing my work. I guess the best way to describe it is modern and quirky but gentle with soothing colours and cuteness. I like to combine cute drawings with beautiful patterns and fills. tickletheimagination.com.au 55
starting out... When my first daughter was born I struggled to find beautiful, eclectic and quirky décor that wasn’t too gender specific, brightly coloured or commercial. I also wanted to find something with an Australian feel without being cliché. When I couldn’t find anything to tick all boxes I decided to create something myself. The name and characters came about when I nick named my daughter ‘Possum’ which was shortened to ‘Poss’. One day I was thinking if she was a boy I probably would have nick named her ‘Wombat’ which would shorten to ‘Wom’ and voila! The concept of ‘Poss & Wom’ was born! My pug Daisy is a real character and a ‘chunk’, I adopted her mannerisms and quirk and put them into my character Wom, who is a funny little wombat. Poss is almost opposite to Wom, she is proper and very nimble but she does share Wom’s passion for fun.
inspired by... I am inspired by nonsense, simplicity, beautiful colours, textures and patterns. I like finding things that make people smile because of the beauty and laugh because of the absurdness. I think it is very important to have creative people around you and to be inspired by, it is essential in order to grow your own creativity. I am constantly finding new work that I love. The all round classics I always come back to are Beatrix Potter and Winnie the Pooh (the original stuff). I love fabric design and am always researching patterns. I also am a big fan of Belle & Boo, by English artist Mandy Sutcliffe, I am inspired how she has built up her brand and maintained the integrity. I also love to look at Japanese postcard art. I think it’s the edge about it I love. It seems to have a modern look that remains timeless.

typical day... Predominately I am a stay at home mum. Two days a week my children are in daycare – they are my Poss & Wom days. So a typical Poss & Wom day is: + Wake up, brekky patrol + Have coffee, kiss hubby goodbye + Day care drop and go + Check post box on the way home + More coffee, enter office – work begins! + Check emails and Facebook while having brekky + Fill any orders + Work on projects listed for the day + Lunch while keeping up with social media + Run any errands that need doing + Work out what’s for dinner + Pick up kiddlywinks + Come home, cook dinner + Day is done

other creative passions... I am a graphic designer by trade, so I do still work on commercial design. I also like to keep fit, so I run and enjoy pilates. I also like dancing, even if I do have two left feet! Since starting Poss & Wom I have come to learn about the plight of the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat. They are more endangered than the panda yet most Australians have never heard about them. I have taken it on board to raise awareness about these beautiful animals. I have information on my blog about it.
tools of the trade... Good old pencil and paper never lets me down. I am now and have always been a doodler - sketching is also a big outlet for me. All my finished work is digital though. I digitally sketch with my Wacom Tablet and iMac – a lot of people are negative towards digital media but I have learnt to embrace it and use it to grow and make my work a lot more versatile. I love paper, I always research the best paper types for optimum results. I print everything myself on my lovely gicleÊ printer – definitely one of my best investments. I use archival rag papers for my prints and recycled papers for gift wrapping and packaging (which is another art I love).

All I can say is nothing comes easy, if you really want something to happen you really do need to put the hard work in to achieve it. Research is valuable and planning is a must. Back yourself no matter what but also be open to suggestion. Googling can increase your knowledge and resources – do it.
“I love to receive emails from people suggesting products they might like to see.” support & networking... Nothing formal but I do like attending a artisan market every now and again to network with other independent label owners. It is nice to support each other. Also the work at home mum networks are very supportive.
future plans... I am always coming up with new product ideas. I am working on the first of my fabric range, which means I will have lots of lovely textile items soon. Hmmm and the word is floating around… something about a kids picture book….! I have some retailers stocking Poss & Wom now too, so I am hoping to increase that number over the next 12 months.

Little Sooti was born three years ago whilst I was pregnant with my first child. It initially started out as a kids lifestyle blog and over time I found I posting more and more kids events which I was just in awe of. One thing led to the other and I found my passion. The name little sooti comes from a name we used to call my daughter Zoe “tooti”. I played around with the name and came up with Sooti.
inspired by... I am inspired by Scandinavian design and style, I love interiors and decorating and with over 1000 décor magazines I get inspired from anything from fabrics and different textures, to art and shapes and room designs. I love pops of bold colours!
other creative passions... I love to decorate, I love interiors and styling in general. I have a scrapbook of magazine cut outs and drawings of our “dream home” and have been adding to it for years. I then also have a great group of Melbourne vendors and other business mums in which we have regular dinner catchups. Its great to just have like minded people around you who you are comfortable with chatting about venues, where to source certain items from and just having some time away from the computer and talking about what we love!!

typical day at work... I work from home with a 3 year old and a 14 month old so my day is pretty hectic. I usually get sorted and then check and respond to emails. I then spend the day that I am working planning, researching, organising and getting quotes out. Event days are pretty full on and I am usually packed and ready the night before. My day involves many cups of coffee!!!

For as long as I can remember my mother has sewn. I grew up at her feet surrounded by fabrics and patterns and pins. As a tiny little girl I loved to sit atop the heavy wooden cover from mums old Singer sewing machine and pretend I was a princess on a horse! As soon as I was old enough I was cutting out doll’s clothes from fabric scraps, and then finally came the excitement of being allowed to use the sewing machine. My mother is an extremely talented dress-maker so I certainly learnt from the best. In primary school, I remember coming home from a friends birthday party and begging mum for a dress just like the party girls. My next memory is of the girls mother on our doorstep with the dress in her hand. Mum grabbed her tape measure and note book and within minutes had sketched and recorded all she needed and handed the dress back. And that certainly happened more than once! Mum and I had a lot of fun together when I was growing up, sewing up a storm and having a fabulous time at a local mill markets monthly sale, walking away with bag loads of fabrics - the stuff of dreams and creation! Mum has taught me all the best tips, like the importance of reinforcing the start and finish of each seam and to iron everything as you go. It makes a huge difference to the end result, a truly professional look that I hope is evident in my work today. tickletheimagination.com.au 89
getting started in business ..... Life changes. Study and a corporate career became my focus and for many years I never found the time or even had the inclination to sew. Yet it was probably inevitable that when I married and had my own children that I would rediscover the passion in a new way. Just for fun, I completed a pattern making course at a local TAFE college. Then in 2009, with our youngest child just 5 months old, minim kids came to life. I started sewing cute bandana style bibs for my little boy who was very dribbly at the time. Friends then began to buy some, I gave some away as gifts and before I knew it everything just took off.
I was extremely lucky to find a few local stores willing to stock my products which gave me a lot of confidence to pursue my goals early on. But it is never all that easy! You make a product then suddenly your head is spinning as you need a business name and logo, business cards, packaging for your products and labelling including fabric woven labels to be sewn onto each item. When I started doing a few markets I then needed signage and display props and a new form of bags and packaging. And then of course setting up the ever essential blog and facebook pages! It all takes a lot of time and research, upfront costs soon add up. Unless you’ve done it, many people have no idea what actually goes into a small business or how many things have to be factored into a cost price. Of course you have to cover all those expenses but I always try to keep my prices as low and fair as possible. When you have a good quality product, customers will come back and it’s that repeat business and word of mouth recommendations that have kept me going. I don’t even like to describe minim kids as a business, for now it really is just a hobby. All my work is done very late at night when our 2 boys are asleep, because unlike me, I don’t think they will be following in their mother’s footsteps ! They don’t like it much when I sew, though sometimes I can get away with cutting out and I always explain in detail to them what I am doing. So secretly, I am very impressed by what our boys actually know about different fabrics and sewing terminology!

It’s a cliché, but it is so important to do what you love. This makes your work easy and never a chore. I like to make and create new products as the mood takes me ! So from the humble beginnings of a simple dribble bib, my range has diversified into soft toys and kids decor including cushions, buntings, door stops, bean bags, doona covers and quilts. It’s all been great fun and I really enjoy the variety in what I do. So do what you love and enjoy the journey it leads you on. And don’t be in a hurry! I’ve seen other small business mums rush into an idea and put out a lot of money upfront only to find it doesn’t succeed. Start small and you will soon know what works for you and what doesn’t.

ZZ Totz was created to encourage children to create something for themselves, that is hands on and ultimately fun. No bells, no whistles and definitely no batteries! We received two of their fairytale inspired craft paper puppet kits for review, so we set to work our resident kids craft experts - eight-year-old Toby and six-year-old Indigo. The pair spotted the package as soon as it arrived and were keen to get started. Each kit contains everything needed for an afternoon of fun...a mat to work on, paper cutouts, glue & popstick. The enclosed instructions were clear and the image of the finished puppet make it easy to follow even those not yet reading. After finishing their puppets, Toby and Indigo happily played ‘prince & princess’ with their characters. Created for Indigo’s fifth birthday, this Rapunzel inspired party was based on a plaette of soft pea green, purple & lavender.

Invitations were clean and simple, but oh, so princessy! A soft lavender background colour, whimsical script font, and tiara design, and finished with a sparly gem!
decor
Starting with a simple white table cloth and hessian runner, branches ran down the centre of the party table. An assortment of lolly-filled apothecary jars, cupcakes, and paper flowers completed the whimsical tablescape Places were set with a princess tiara, name tag, and a little package filled with beads and ribbon for the girls first activity Simple store bought plastic tiaras were given a custom, handmade feel with the additon of clear crystal gemstones, and felt flowers and leaves. One of my favourite elements was the assortment of repurposed jars, wrapped with a paper doily and tied with twine. Flowers were created with miniature tissue pom poms, attached to florists wire and finished with a hanging crystal.

On arrival the girls each created their own princess bracelet...so sweet! One of the things Indigo insisted on having for the party was ‘rapunzel hair’. We found plaited hair ties and for their next activity the girls decorated them with sticky gemstones... to create their own ‘rapunzel’ hair plait!... they then all loved popping them into their hair and parading their new ‘long hair’! Then we sat down to watch a little ‘Tangled’ while they each had their nails polished and decorated with butterfly decals! Next the girls decorated cupcakes with gorgeous enchanted garden cupcake toppers from Jamosie Sweet.
And, of course, no party is complete without pass the parcel...the wrapping was inspired by one of the images from our pinterest inspiration board! Each layer had a unique felt flower hairclip which my sister and I made.

“when we have a day of parties or other activities I like to make goldilocks porridge so I know that they have had a couple of serves of vegetables, grains, dairy and some fruit. It makes the rest of the day less stressful and if they have a not so great lunch or dinner, I just don’t stress about it as much. And mama bear porridge is a great treat for the weekend...�

(serves 2)
2/3 cup oats (not instant) 1 1/2 cups skim milk (can use water if you have allergies) 1/2 carrot finely grated 1/2 zucchini grated 1/2 cup approx frozen or fresh blueberries Maple syrup and cinnamon for serving (optional) In medium saucepan stir oats, milk, carrot and zucchini over medium heat until simmering and mixture is the consistency you require, generally should be quite thick. If using frozen blueberries add at this stage and stir for a minute until thawed, remove from heat and serve. If using fresh blueberries, remove porridge from heat first, ladle into dishes and sprinkle blueberries on top. Serve with maple syrup and cinnamon sugar.

1/2 cup oats 1 cup water 1 apple grated with peel vanilla yoghurt raspberry jam slivered almonds golden syrup In a medium saucepan stir oats and water over medium heat until simmering and mixture is the consistency you enjoy. Let me set the scene for you...
Its 7am in the morning you just got out of the shower, you’re getting ready for work and your children are screaming to be fed and dressed and there is a lot of yelling and tears, and that’s just from Mum. The kids are going bananas because they can’t find the special t-shirt, sports uniform or fairy skirt they just have to wear today. Sound like your household in the morning? I’m Robyn Amott, a WAHM to two young girls and owner of Bless this Mess Professional Organising and De-cluttering services. I’m more than familiar with how chaotic life with kids can
be and know only too well how the regular morning routine can make getting out the door seem impossible. All because of a simple clothing issue. Organising the contents of your treasures wardrobe is a great place to start! Coming from a fashion based background, wardrobes are one of my great passions. You ideally want to create a wardrobe that fits your child’s age, allows for independence and yet is flexible enough to cater to both their current and future needs.

so now that’s sorted how do you stop those morning tantrums over what to wear? incorporate a new step into your nightime routine... Get the kids to choose their clothes for the next day. Let them know what the weather will be and the most appropriate clothing items i.e. skirt, singlet, short sleeve top, cardigan and stockings. With your newly organised wardrobe, the selection process will be much easier. Also gives you the chance to wash any last minute uniform or special items the night before they need them.
let go of your ideals on how you think they should look... Don’t get too hung up on what matches and what doesn’t. You’ll only end up in another tantrum based situation. Children need to experiment with their choices, its’ part of learning and a way for them to express their individuality. So let them! The outfits my children come up with are sometimes hideous and other times they manage to pull off the perfect outfit from items I would never have thought to team together. Be sure to praise their ability! Trust me their sense of pride, the smile on their faces and the ‘how do I look Mummy’ comments are worth every mismatched outfit. More importantly the kids will be only too happy to get dressed the next morning as they chose their outfit and can’t wait to put it on.

a place for everything... When it comes to organising any space it’s not only about ‘the stuff.’ Giving everything a home creates calmness for both your mind and spaces. Systems and routines are a big part of the process too and ensure you don’t end up back at square one in a few weeks. These systems provide an ease of use for everyone. Additionally they allow for independence, save on space, create a home for everything and in turn make it easier for you/ the kids to find and put clothing away when clean. . Most importantly they will save you time, money and your sanity and make that morning routine run more smoothly and have you out the door on time.
Now that’s sure to make the morning routine a little more bearable!

Once Upon a Time
design challenge We spoke to three of our favourite designers, and set them the challenge of creating a design board - the brief was quite simply to be inspired by ‘Once Upon a Time’ and using Australian suppliers, where possible handmade. Each designer interpreted this in their own way and three deliciously different boards came back - we love them all! Read on to see their boards, and find out a little more about each stylist and the gorgeous products they’ve selected...

Lots of mixed and matched fabrics that were hand made, used from sheets, pillowcases and old clothing.
In this design I have used vintage elements such as the iron bed, studded arm chair and the lamp shade but chose a pastel pink bed, a rich velvet armchair and a cluster of small vintage style shades, to give the room a modern yet old world feel. This vintage poster is very sweet and rag dolls were very popular before barbie and cabbage patch kids. The bunting also adds a modern touch but vintage fabric was used to complement the design of this little girl’s once upon a time room.

I’m sure there was a time when Children’s books were made exclusively for children, fortunately the talented creativity poured in to the really great books mean that many serve to delight the adults as well as their children. Owl Know How, with its plethora of handmade loveliness, is certainly one of those cross over books. Owl Know How began life as an animation which combined the talents of Cat Rabbit, a talented indie textile artist, with animator Isobel Knowles. The stop-motion animation is deliciously reminiscent of 1970’s children’s programmes with
clear actions and expressive music negating the need for any narration. Whilst exhibiting at the No Vacancy Project Space in Melbourne they were approached by publisher Thames & Hudson … and the picture book was born!

Owl Know How features Cornelia Rabbit as the owl obsessed inhabitant of Cloud Town living next door to the cute, spectacle wearing Orvi. The inhabitants of Cloud Town appear to be having quite an idealistic life until one day they are attacked by tree branches poking up, well, everywhere!! Cornelia soon hatches a plan which involves everybody coming together to make lots of ... owls! The attention to detail, the creativity, will leave you pouring over the details long after you have completed each sentence. – from the pictures and postcards pinned to Cornelia’s fridge, to the pale blue sock dangling out of the open drawer. All of the items have been hand crafted from felt, whilst the town buildings have been crafted from cardboard and adorned

with felt detailing - this is sure to inspire rainy day afternoon inspired activities either in the classroom or home. The endnotes are a delight. The autumnal coloured clouds dotted with owls compliment the pages perfectly. Tucked inside the back cover is a perfect surprise, a cleverly concealed envelope containing an Owl Know How Owl Pattern complete with instructions, together with directions to an online tutorial, especially created for fans of Cornelia. Perfect!
