And on Christmas Eve, the magic and joy of the season will follow you on a walk through Old Town’s Plaza in Albuquerque or a stroll down Canyon Road in Santa Fe. Don’t miss a chance to hop on the NM Railrunner Express. With 15 stations between Belen and Santa Fe, it is a great way to view the winter landscape while you relax. Disembark at the Santa Fe Depot / Railyards, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Santa Fe’s shopping, arts, and entertainment districts. Just steps away you can enjoy a craft beverage at Second Street Brewery, take in dinner & a movie at Violet Crown Cinema, or browse the year-round Farmer’s Market that takes place on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. And, as you ease into the New Year and the hustle of the holiday season ends, make sure to take time for yourself and be kind to those around you. Did You Know... • New Mexico is the oldest wine producing region in the country. Franciscan García de Zúñiga and a monk named Antonio de Arteaga started growing wine grapes along the Rio Grande around 1629. By the late 19th century, New Mexico was one of the primary wine growing regions in the United States, producing over a million gallons each year (that’s more than New York)! • New Mexico is the 5th largest state in the country but one of the least populated. • The Chile Pepper is both our State vegetable and State fruit, with our state question being, “Red or green?” - In reference to how you would like your chile served on your meal. To ask for both, the answer is, “Christmas.” • Santa Fe is the highest capital city in the United States at 7,200 feet above sea level.
• The word “Pueblo” is used to describe a group of indigenous people, a town, or an architectural style. There are 19 Pueblo groups that speak 4 distinct languages in New Mexico. The Pueblo people of the southwest have lived in the same location longer than any other culture in the Nation. • The City of Truth or Consequences was once called Hot Springs. In 1950 the town changed its name to the title of a popular radio quiz program.

It was named after a Municipality in Spain (Alburquerque). • Taos Pueblo’s unique architecture has been inhabited for over a thousand years and are still in use today. • Hatch, New Mexico is known as the “Green Chile capital of the world.”

One of the best things about living in Albuquerque is the weather. Each season highlights the beauty of mother nature without her extremes. When it snows, we enjoy a white wonderland for a day, maybe two, and then it melts away before interfering with daily life. If you are in search of the white stuff, it’s never far away. This picture was taken along the road to Sandia Crest, a short drive from Albuquerque. Locals love being able to drive a few minutes to play in the snow, then return home to clear roads and driveways. Welcome to winter in the high desert!

In addition to sports, he enjoys dancing, playing video games, and doing “something fun” with his family. Derek likes to read “Pete the Cat” books, watches “American Ninja Warrior” on television, and counts pizza, sourdough bread, and vanilla ice cream as his favorite foods. Winter Driving Tips
TIRE PRESSURE As the temperature drops, your tire pressure can drop too. It is possible to lose up to 1 pound per square inch with every 10 degree drop in temperature. Before you hit the road, check your pressure to avoid the potential for premature tire wear or tread separation. Low pressure can make your vehicle handle with less predictability and lead to an accident. Make sure to check your pressure if you are traveling by car this winter. GASOLINE AND WASHER FLUID It is a good practice to keep both the gas tank and the washer fluid tank full in the winter. A full gas tank will help prevent accumulated water from freezing inside your
fuel pump and can aid in helping you to stay warm by keeping the engine running in case you get stuck. Keeping a full windshieldwasher reservoir is very important if debris from weather stricken roads find their way to your windshield. SURVIVAL KIT Hopefully you will not need this, but being prepared is always a great idea, especially in the winter months. We recommend keeping a blanket, first-aid kit, a knife, backup cellphone charger, jumper cables, a shovel, and water. New Mexico is rich with Spanish, Mexican, Native American, and Anglo history which has shaped the holidays in our state bringing centuries of traditions to our holiday landscape. These traditions come to life with our food, our decorations, and our unique love for sand filled paper bags, lit by a single candle. New Mexicans pass the following holiday recipes from generation to generation as a way to keep their traditions alive. • Tamales - a savory dish made with corn-based masa dough, which is typically stuffed with shredded pork or vegetables. The little package is wrapped in a corn husk and steamed. The husk is removed before eating and topped with red or green chile sauce when served.
• Posole - resembles a soup made with hominy; a specific type of large corn kernel without its hull. This dish has various recipes, but is most often made with pork or chicken and red or green chile. • Biscochitos - a cookie made with lard and flavored with cinnamon, sugar and anise. Another NM Tradition includes illuminating paths and rooftops with luminarias (also called Farolitos), which are sand-filled brown paper bags lit by a single votive candle. Many churches, families and neighborhoods around Albuquerque decorate their dwelling and business exteriors with luminarias for the holidays. The largest display takes place on Christmas Eve in Historic Old Town Albuquerque with another event lining Canyon Road in Santa Fe that same night. New Mexico may not receive the same attention as its neighboring states of Colorado or Utah, but the Land of Enchantment has its fair share of great skiing. There are eight alpine ski areas: Angel Fire, Pajarito Mountain, Red River Ski and Summer Area, Sandia Peak, Sipapu, Ski Apache, Ski Santa Fe, and Taos Ski Valley. Here are ten enchanting tidbits about skiing and snowboarding in the state. 1. YES, THERE ARE MOUNTAINS - A few years back, the state of New Mexico conducted focus-group research that revealed many potential visitors thought the state was just one hot desert. On the contrary, northern New Mexico has a large swath of true alpine environment that goes above 13,000 feet. Even much farther south in the Sierra Blanca range, Ski Apache goes up to an elevation of 11,400 feet. 2. SANTA FE CAN BE A SKI TOWN - Santa Fe blends Native American, Spanish and Anglo cultures. The ubiquitous adobe architecture and 250 art galleries overshadow the fact that the highest capital city in the United States sits at an elevation of 7,200 feet. Just 16 miles (or about a 30-minute drive from downtown), Ski Santa Fe has 660 skiable acres of solid terrain for all ability levels. The ski area does not have lodging, but first-class hotels in Santa Fe provide plenty of options. Plus, winter is Santa Fe’s off-season, so hotel rates tend to be less expensive. The city’s cultural attractions and jaunts up to Ski Santa Fe combine for a unique ski vacation. 3. THREE RESORTS COMPRISE THE “ENCHANTED CIRCLE” - The three ski resorts of Taos Ski Valley, Red River and Angel Fire comprise the “Enchanted Circle.” The highways connecting the areas form an 83-mile loop with the town of Taos on the west side, Red River on the north, and Angel Fire on the southwest. Also nearby, Sipapu is located about 20 miles southeast of Taos.

4. MAJOR UPDATES AT TAOS SKI VALLEY - Founded by legendary ski pioneer Ernie Blake, Taos Ski Valley was the quintessential family-owned and operated ski area until its sale to billionaire Louis Bacon in 2013. Respectful of Blake’s unique vision, Bacon plans to stay true to the ski area’s character, but also fund a much-needed major update of the base-area facilities. The first improvement of the new era was the installation of a new chairlift accessing Kachina Peak. The impressive bowl previously required a hike of at least 45 minutes. Some diehard locals lament the loss of exclusivity that went along with the demanding hike, but most of the masses will opt for the relatively tame Main Street trail down the middle of the bowl. The steep and technical K Chutes, located to a skier’s left off the lift, should still see rather limited traffic. Also, Taos’ precarious lines off West Basin Ridge and Highline Ridge will still require a hike. 5. TAOS HAS A REPUTATION FOR CHALLENGING TERRAIN - Taos Ski Valley has a deserved reputation for challenging terrain. One exception is the beginner White Feather trail. The name actually has a hidden dig attached to it. In British history, those who were deemed cowards for staying out of the army during wartime were given a white feather. 6. BEGINNERS CAN SKI GREENS AT RED Beginners should feel no embarrassment at Red River, which draws heavily from Texas and Oklahoma. Many of the flatlanders appreciate the excellent green terrain up high on the backside of the mountain. The meandering trails through Aspen groves offer spectacular, unbeatable vistas. 7. SERIOUS PARTYING IN THE MOUNTAINS DURING MARDI GRAS - Among the New Mexico ski areas, Red River is the only one that rises directly above a town. The old mining town of Red River really comes alive each February during Mardi Gras in the Mountains. Locals organize “krewes” and enlist visitors to join in for a week of serious partying. 8. YOU CAN HAVE RED, GREEN, OR CHRISTMAS WITH YOUR SOUTHWESTERN CUISINE - Of course, the Southwest culture extends to dining. Many dishes can be prepared with a diner’s choice of red or green chilies. For a combination of both red and green, just ask for “Christmas.”

9. FIRE UP THE EVENING WITH NIGHT SKIING. Angel Fire is the only New Mexico resort to offer night skiing. About 50 acres of terrain are lighted until 8 p.m. on weekends and holidays. 10. BOSQUE DEL APACHE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE By Terri Dean, Publisher For years I have heard about the magic of the Bosque del Apache during the winter months. So on New Year’s Eve morning 2016, I found myself driving in the pouring rain to see what I might be missing. The weather would not dampen my spirits, and this journey was filled with music and imagination of what was ahead. With camera in tow, coffee in hand, off I went, hopeful that the clouds would be gone by the time I arrived. My first stop was the Visitors Center. The staff was very helpful and after learning more of the history and armed with a map, I set out with camera in hand to play.
Four bald eagles, hawks and more cranes than I have ever seen in a lifetime elevated my senses, and I was totally captivated by the nature and beauty the Refuge had to offer. If you are a nature lover, a wildlife watcher, or a photographer, this is a MUST DO while you are in New Mexico. Arrive at dawn, and you will witness thousands of snow geese, Ross’s geese and sandhill cranes as they ascend from the waters that protect them from predators at night. Stay until dusk, and enjoy the sunset sky filled with birds in flight, as they return to nest for the evening.
You can drive the 12-mile loop or take the guided tour. However you decide to enjoy this adventure, please obey the rules of the Refuge. On my way home, a stop at the Owl Bar and Cafe was in order. People come from all over the world to enjoy the famous green chile cheeseburgers and experience the atmosphere of this establishment that has been around since the 1940’s. With a full belly and a happy heart, I hopped in my mudsoaked car and rolled back toward the freeway. Just then, the clouds parted and a good ol’ New Mexico double rainbow followed me most of the way home.

Want the recipe for taking something great and making it even better? We know just the guy to ask! Chef Marc Quiñones, who was named Executive Chef of Hotel Andaluz earlier this year, is bringing his own flavor to the already established MÁS Tapas y Vino, located inside this boutique Albuquerque hotel. The full-service restaurant and tapas bar has been thriving since it opened in Albuquerque back in 2013, bringing traditional Spanish cuisine to the downtown area. With bold flavors, locally-sourced ingredients and a thoughtfully crafted menu and wine list, MÁS had proven its success and left very little room, if any, for improvement. Enter Chef Marc Quiñones, who was named “Chef of The Year” by The New Mexico Restaurant Association in September. Well-known and highly respected in the culinary scene, it was only a matter of time before Quiñones’ passion and skills transformed into flavors of their own resulting in changes both inside and outside of the kitchen.
Within a month of his rein, Chef Marc Quiñones rolled out brand new menus in both MÁS and Ibiza - the rooftop lounge located within Hotel Andaluz. He only slightly modified existing guest favorites, he says, but the majority of the items on the current menu(s) are brand new. He did, however, remain true to the Mediterranean and Spanish focus, but simply added a more contemporary flair. Outside of the kitchen, Quiñones is a loving father and husband who he says he owes everything to his family. “They support me so much and are so understanding of my obligations,” he gushes. “They are so much fun and if I am not working you can best believe that I am spending my time with them.” The future looks bright for both Chef Quiñones and Hotel Andaluz; a perfect pairing, if you will.
