Lana Borg shocked, honoured, humbled to win NSW Award

R

eaders of The Voice of the Maltese should be proud of the fact that by their vote they helped Lana Borg, a grandmother and mother of seven to win the 2015 A.H. Beard's Community Hero Award in the NSW Woman of the Year Awards that recognise the outstanding contribution women across NSW make to industry, community and society. Lana of Emu Plains shed tears of joy on March 4 when she was announced the winner during a special reception at NSW Parliament House, and was then presented with the award by the Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Women Pru Goward. The realisation of how much the award would mean to scores of hungry and homeless who await the arrival of the Mama Lana van carrying free, hot meals four nights a week at Penrith’s Allen Place carpark, was quite emotional to Lana. Asked for her reaction, she told The Voice, “This is an amazing result and makes me feel even more in shock that I won. I am also feeling very honoured and humbled that I won by a large margin. It has already brought about new awareness to my cause and new interest from other media agencies. “I hope that all this new awareness and support can lead us to our goal of our drop-in centre complete with commercial kitchen where we can help our patrons with their resumes, online courses and interview training. As well as making them feel useful by helping prepare the nightly meals.” The awards attracted over 7,000 votes (the biggest amount ever received that is) for the Premier’s Woman of the Year Award that has been won by Profs. Minotti Apte OAM, a leading researcher in the field of pancreatic cancers; A.H. Beard's Community Hero Award won by Lana, Co-founder of Mama Lana's Community Foundation; the Harvey Norman Young Woman of the Year, given to Annabelle Chauncy OAM, the co-founder of the School for Life Foundation, and the Rex Airlines Regional Woman of the Year, won by Barbara Cowley, a dedicated Hunter Valley volunteer and fundraiser. FACS, the organisers of the Awards received 229 nominations from across NSW highlighting the achievements of women across the state. A spokesperson for the organisation told The Voice of the Maltese that they received close to 3,000 votes in total for the Community Hero Award, with Lana receiving close to one third of those votes. Working as a sales rep for a radio station, puts Lana under a lot of pressure, but she is very proud to have founded the Mama Lana Foundation with her husband Roger.

She added: “People are shocked to see how many people and families turn up at Allen Place carpark for a hot meal. Everyone can do something to help – even it it’s making sandwiches or spreading the word through Facebook.” Lana, nominated for the award by Peter Camilleri of Storage King Penrith told The Voice: “I want to thank you and your supporters very much for voting and believing in me.” She said she acknowledges that it is not her alone that has earned Lana with husband Roger, with whom this recognition, rather she shares the award she is holding it is the community of It all started when they were asked to cook people and businesses who volunteered a Christmas Eve banquet for Penrith's their time and skills, donated money, gohomeless in November 2013. Who was the first Maltese landowner in Pendle Hill? T he table below lists two brothers from Birkirkara Rd, St Julians, one of whom, Joseph Sammut, is believed to be the first Maltese to buy land in Pendle Hill (known as Little Malta is a western suburb of Sydney, NSW), way back in 1912. The exact date when Joseph left Malta for Australia is not known. A search in a 100,000 strong database I have compiled of Malta bills of health and passport applications (1815-1923), held at the Malta National Archives, points to a three-month period in January-March 1911 which, though missing from the archives, may explain why an entry for Joseph Sammut is not entered in the passport database. He may have arrived in Australia during early 1911. However, a letter written by Joseph himself to an Australian Government Department, when visiting Malta in 1917, gives us further insights. Joseph wrote to the Australian Passports Office on the 22nd June 1917, requesting a return visa to Australia. He stated: …. I have been in Sydney for five years carrying business as partner in the poultry farm at Wentworthville, No. 90 Block, purchased from Messers. Arthur Rickard & Co. Ltd of 94 Pitt St. Sydney. He added: Having come to this Island (Malta) about two months ago on a visit to my family and relatives, and being ready to return to Australia to resume my above referred to business, I have applied to the local government for a passport to return…. This request was followed by a Malta passport application for Joseph Sammut dated the 9th Sept. 1917 (see table below). If one deducts five years prior residency in Australia as stated by Joseph in his letter, the poultry farm Joseph purchased would have been bought in 1912. What is of interest is that in this 1917 passport application, Joseph entered his occupation as cook. He added that he had been to England several times. We know from his letter that he was a poultry farmer in Australia. The reality was that in 1917 there was a strict embargo by the British Imperial Government that no passports were to be Date of Issue Surname Name Son of

issued for Australia from Malta. This embargo lasted till late 1920. The passport embargo took effect as an aftermath after a group of 214 Maltese migrants were refused entry to Australia and sent to New Caledonia because of the controversial referendum happening in Australia in Sept 1916 regarding conscription during the First World War. This sad chapter in Maltese migration history to Australia is known as the Maltese of New Caledonia incident. So, when Joseph applied for a passport in 1917 he found himself barred from obtaining a passport to Australia. He had a poultry farm to return to. He had spent two months in Malta visiting his family and needed to return to Australia. So his only option was to engage as a cook on a ship and make his way home. The year 1917 was a risky year to travel by sea as the First World War caused many casualties at sea. The destination he stated on the passport application is not legible as the passport application form has a big inkstain smudged across the paper, so one cannot tell for sure what destination he had stated on the form. A search at the Sands Directory (Sydney & NSW), which is the equivalent of today’s Australia White Pages, lists Joseph as residing at Western Rd, Prospect from 1921-1925. Moreover, a search in the 1926 Holroyd Municipality ratepayers roll has no entry for Joseph Sammut. Did he sell his land? Did he move elsewhere? Did he return to Malta? Joseph is a very early Maltese pioneer, a poultry farm owner, in Pendle Hill. In an oral history interview I did

Traditional Maltese food for Easter Maryann featured on SBS food magazine

E

aster at the Camilleri’s household at Cecil Park NSW is time for celebration and a food feast. The way the family of Maryann and husband Bartholomew Camilleri prepare for Easter and how they cook and serve to their extended family, the best of traditional Maltese food is featured in the current and final issue (April 2015) of Pacific Magazines and SBS’ monthly food magazine, FEAST’. Although Maryann was born in Australia her love for Malta and Maltese food is evident. She met her husband in Malta in 1981 when she was 22 and married him 10 years later. In its April edition the magazine highlights what is usually available at the Camilleri’s with vivid pictures of the Easter specials; figolli with Ωebbu© mimli, ©bejniet, galletti, bigilla, ˙obΩ biΩ-Ωejt and for good measure even almond cake and the traditional Maltese rabbit. The magazine, that is still available in bookshops even includs other Maltese recipes for torta tal-lewΩ, stuffat tal-fenek, and imqaret. Maryann Camilleri, an avid reader of The Voice of the Maltese was also featured in the March 18, 2014 issue (No. 71) when she recounted her experience as an Australian born of Maltese parents, growing up on a market garden around Horsley Park. Maryann attended the Maltese Language School at Horsley Park, passed her HSC and became the school principal for a while. Her two children, Thomas and Rachel also attended the school and can speak Maltese. Introducing Maryann to the readers, the magazine said: “In Sydney’s western suburb of Cecil Hills, Easter celebrations are laden with delicious Mediterranena food, special treats, lots of laughter and traditional folk music that takes the Camilleri family on a nostalgic trip back to Malta”. Maryann pictured with the finished product Maryann loves Easter, and particularly the figolli it seems. “Everybody featured on FEAST magazine loves figolli, my cousin Mary sent me the figolli cutters from Malta. I make them every Easter and gift them to relatives and friends”. Joe and Agnes, Maryann’s parents are from Mellie˙a. They raise rabbits especially for family occasions. “I am extremely proud of my parents and I inherited the love of Maltese food from them,” Maryann told The Voice of the Maltese. If you rather buy your figolli and other Maltese sweets we recommend Sunny’s Confectionery. (See advertisement on page 13). Maryann making another Maltese delicacy, the ©bejniet (cheeslets)

The event also included kids’ activities, a giant play pen for kids to play in as well as a range of live animals for the kids to touch and hold. Cassandra, Carol and Charmaine with assistance from Nicholina also ran a BBQ at the back area of La Valette to keep up with the amount of hungry Maltese around on the day. But wait! There’s more! There were also a lot of people who enjoyed the cultural side of the fete. Many said they got to learn more about their background and those who attended that weren’t of Maltese background, also enjoyed learning about our heritage. “Elvis” was a great hit. Shannon, Kylie, Cassandra, Elizabeth, Brittany, Carol, Nicholina and Charmaine who make up what is MAYC, organised a Maltesethemed fete that proved successful with pride beaming from every point of the day. The day started as early as 7am for MAYC, who got to the event location of La Valette Social Centre, Blacktown to start setting up for the day. The doors opened at 10am with the front grass area filled with stalls. They included; the Maltese Heritage Rugby League Team, OLQP Band, Fortress Cakes, Baby Birth Prints, Candles and More, two of Sydney’s Maltese language schools. Randal, a Maltese-Australian wrestler also held a stall, so too Sunny, who was there selling his traditional Maltese sweets. There was a White Elephant, and of course, MAYC also held their own stall selling merchandise like Food We Love Maltese/Australian cookbooks and MAYC t-shirts. The Committee also had a BBQ, run by Kylie and Elizabeth, with Brittany selling raffle tickets for MAYC’s raffle that had over 26 prizes to be drawn at the conclusion

I myself download it and print about four or five copies to distribute to relatives who are not computer literate and are therefore unable to read it online. I also email it to other friends and family members in Malta, and also to others here in Australia and also in the US. I like the debate that seems to have been launched about whether Maltese migrants should have the right to vote. To be honest with you I never even thought about it and I have never met any Maltese-Australians friends of mine who have even ever mentioned it. Therefore they, like me are not interested in having the right to vote. In this latest issue I also note one interesting fact. I don’t know about Joseph Cutajar. Now, after reading the interesting article on Page 2 (Issue No. 96) I am glad to have discovered the face behind the name.

Sandra Borg, St Albans, Victoria, writes: ustralia in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest? This is unbelievable. I always thought that this most popular musical event was only for European participants, that is the member countries of the European Broadcasting Union, EBU. Since when has Australia become part of that organisation? I am sure that like me, even many Europeans from EU member states would find it strange to be competing against Australian talent. They would ask themselves if it is fair. many in Australia too would be asking if it is also fair for the Australian representative. Every year, there have been accusations by participants that victory is mostly determined by neighbouring countries voting for their neighbours. Australia has no neighbouring countries to vote for her or for that matter, also competing. Therefore the Australian representative would be at a disadvantge. Now, let us assume that Australia wins the contest. Would it be allowed to organise it the following year? Do you think Europeans would vote for it bearing in mind time differences and budget constraints? Perhaps it could be good for Malta, as Maltese-Australians would be voting for the Maltese song. At least without being neighbours we could help vote for tiny but talented Malta. But here we also have Italians, Greeks, Croats, Serbians, etc. They too would want their country of birth to win sp vote for it. So what chances have Australians or Maltese to win?

kitba ta’

IVAN CAUCHI

D

an l-a˙˙ar, il-mara waslet lura mix-xog˙ol tag˙ha. Indunajt li kien ©ralha xi ˙a©a, g˙ax kienet qed tgedwed wa˙edha minn ta˙t l-ilsien. Mallewwel staqsejtha x'kien ©ara, u dak li riedet! Fl-ispiΩerija li ta˙dem fiha f'Toongabbie, ji©u ˙afna Maltin, u w˙ud minnhom jistaqsu g˙aliha ˙alli taqdihom hi. Wa˙da minnhom kien kunjomha Butti©ie©, u l-mara tieg˙i g˙ajtitilha b'kunjomha ˙alli tmur ti©bor il-mediçina li kienet ordnat. Wa˙da minn s˙abha, immigranta b˙alha u b˙ali, qaltilha (bl-IngliΩ) li mhux hekk suppost tippronunzjaha, imma Battigig, g˙ax hekk kienet ippronunzjatha l-klijenta. Il-mara tieg˙i qaltilha li l-mod Malti pur kif tippronunzja dak il-kunjom huwa Butti©ie©, imma din se˙bitha qisha ma ridetx taççettaha. Kompliet tg˙idli b'dispjaçir, li l-biçça l-kbira talMaltin li ji©u hemm ma jg˙inux biex il-pronunzja ssir sew, g˙ax juΩaw verΩjoni Anglisizzata ta' kunjomhom. G˙alhekk Baldacchino li suppost jinstema’ Baldakkino, jitlissen Baldaççino, Bor© isir Borg, Grech li suppost jinstema’ Grek jitlissen Greç, Ebejer isir Ebe©er, u l-lista ma tieqaf qatt. L-estrem isir meta l-kunjomijiet jinbidlu anke formalment, ji©ifieri jibdew mhux biss jitlissnu imma anke jinkitbu wkoll differenti mill-ori©inal, b˙al Mercieca li jinbidel f'Mercia, Bajada f'Baiada. Naturalment, jien nifhem id-diffikultà li nies li trabbew fillingwa primarja tag˙hom tkun l-IngliΩ li jippronunzjaw il-kunjomijiet Maltin. Dan min˙abba li l-kunjomijiet Maltin jinkitbu biex isegwu fonetika Taljana. Biex tifhmu dak li qed ng˙id, b˙ala eΩempju nistg˙u nie˙du lkelma Taljana 'chi', li tfisser 'min' bil-Malti u 'who' bl-IngliΩ, suppost tinstema’ 'ki' fit-Taljan, imma l-IngliΩi li g˙andhom kliem b˙al 'church', ilissnuha b˙ala 'çi'. Dan jispjega g˙aliex kunjomi Cauchi, Awstraljani jippronunzjawh Kawçi u mhux Kawki kif jinstema’ fil-Malti. Hemm diversi ittri o˙ra bil-Malti li jinstemg˙u differenti ˙afna mill-IngliΩ, b˙all-'j', 'q' u o˙rajn, kif jiskopru mallewwel l-istudenti tieg˙i tal-Malti. Jien smajt lil ˙afna Maltin hawn fl-Awstralja (u probabbli f'kull

pajjiΩ ie˙or b'popolazzjoni sostanzjali Maltija) jg˙idu li jixbg˙u ma jinftehmux meta jag˙tu isimhom, jew li jkollhom jispelluh kull darba, u g˙alhekk ilissnuh b'verΩjoni Anglisizzata. Dan il-proçess probabbli kien ukoll influwenzat mill-politika fuq l-immigrazzjoni tal-gvernijiet Awstraljani, fil-perjodu meta l-immigrazzjoni minn Malta la˙qet il-quççata tag˙ha, ji©ifieri wara t-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija. Din il-politika, imsej˙a ta' assimilazzjoni, kellha l-g˙an li l-immigranti bil-mod isiru simili g˙all-Awstraljani IngliΩi fil-valuri, im©ieba, stil tal-˙ajja u finalment, fit-ta˙dit.(1) Il-pressjoni biex il-Maltin ji©u aççettati f'soçjetà li kienet issej˙ilhom b'mod derogattiv wogs ma setg˙etx ma kinetx kbira, u ˙a©a li kienet tag˙milhom differenti kienet bla dubju il-kunjom. Biex ng˙id kollox, dan il-proçess jidher ukoll f'kulturi o˙ra, u kultant b'mod iktar estrem l-aktar f'immigranti Asjatiçi, fejn innies komunement ikollhom isem IngliΩ apparti dak Asjatiku, u li jikkwotaw lil tal-ewwel u mhux tat-tieni. Jien fl-esperjenza tieg˙i fid-dinja tax-xog˙ol hawnhekk, nista' ng˙id li l-kollegi tieg˙i kienu jag˙mlu minn kollox biex jippronunzjaw ismi b'mod korrett. Ismi Ivan, li bl-IngliΩ jinstema Ajvin, u kont niggosta lil s˙abi jippruvaw jippronunzjaw ismi b'mod tradizzjonalment Malti, u jibqg˙u jippruvaw sakemm jirnexxilhom. Niftakar li kont in˙ossni grat li kienu jie˙du l-˙in li jag˙mlu dan - forsi kont xortija tajba li sibt kollegi li kienu miftu˙in g˙al kulturi o˙ra. G˙eΩieΩ ˙uti Maltin, l-appell tieg˙i hu li ng˙oΩΩu isimna u kif jinstema fil-lingwa tag˙na, g˙ax dan huwa uniku fid-dinja, u parti Ωg˙ira mill-patrimonju inestimabbli li n©orru minn dik il-gΩira f'nofs il-Mediterran tant imΩewqa b'g˙ana kulturali. Jien kburi li jsimni Ivan, u li jinstema’ Ivan u mhux Ajvin. Referenzi 1. L-ewwel Ωjara pastorali l-Arçisqof-elett jag˙milha fid-Dar tal-Providenza

umejn biss wara t-t˙abbira li ©ie mag˙Ωul millPapa Fran©isku biex imexxi d-djoçesi ta’ Malta b˙ala Arçisqof, il-Mons Charles Scicluna g˙amel l-ewwel Ωjara pastorali tieg˙u. Din kienet lid-Dar talProvidenza fis-Si©©iewi fejn ©e milqug˙ b’applaws minn dawk li ja˙dmu u/jew jg˙ixu hemmhekk. Huwa qaddes quddiesa u wara ltaqa’ wkoll ma’ dawk li jg˙ixu ja˙dmu, jew huma voluntiera f’dan il-post fis-Si©©iewi. Qabel il-quddiesa, id-direttur li jmexxi din id-Dar, Fr Martin Micallef, ta mer˙ba lill-Arçisqof elett u wassallu l-fer˙ tieg˙u u ta' dawk kollha fid-Dar, g˙all-fatt li lPapa g˙o©bu jag˙Ωel lill-monsinjur b˙ala l-Arçisqof ta' Malta. Huwa tah ukoll ˙ajr talli l-ewwel Ωjara tieg˙u g˙amilha proprju fid-Dar tal-Providenza, li, qal, hi “il-wiçç uman tal-Knisja Maltija”. Ûied jg˙id li bil-gest tieg˙u Mons. Scicluna wera li jrid ikun ir-rag˙aj ta' kul˙add, u filwaqt li fakkru fis-slogan: “Xejn dwarna ming˙arjna”, talab lillArçisqof elett biex jisma’ u jag˙ti widen ta’ dawk b’diΩabbilta`. Fl-omelja tieg˙u Mons Scilcuna, li g˙andu jie˙u l-pussess biex imexxi d-djoçesi ta’ Malta fil-Kattidral tal-iMdina fil-21 ta’ Marzu, issokta jg˙id, li d-Dar tal-Providenza hi post g˙aΩiΩ kemm g˙ad-djoçesi u wkoll g˙as-soçjeta`. Qal li d-diΩabbiltà tista’ t˙ares lejha b˙ala limitu, jew inkella tista' taraha b˙ala xi ˙a©a li tista' timbuttak. Huwa fakkar lil-fundatur tad-Dar, Dun Mikiel Azzopardi kien l-ispirazzjoni ta’ dan il-post, u wkoll fa˙˙ar il-©eneroΩita` tal-Maltin, li g˙inu, u li grazzi g˙alihom id-diΩabbilta` f’Malta ma baqg˙etx ti©i mo˙bija.

Sa˙aq li, “fid-Dar tal-Providenza d-diΩabbiltà ©iet mibdula u f'dan il-post hija turija u xhieda tad-dinjità talbniedem.” Qal li fid-Dar tal-Providenza, bl-isforz ta' ˙afna Maltin u bi m˙abba kbira, dak li hu mistkerrah mid-dinja sar im˙abba. Huwa temm l-omelija tieg˙u b’talba g˙al dawk li da˙lu f’din id-Dar u “raw it-tbatija tal-Golgota, biex ma jinsewx il-glorja tat-Tabor”. Fi tmiem il-quddiesa, huwa ltaqa’ mill-qrib ma’ dawk li jg˙ixu f’din id-Dar u mal-˙addiema. Kien hemm xeni emozzjonanti u f’waqtiet, f’g˙ajnejn l-Arçisqof elett anke dehret i©©elben xi demg˙a hu u jitg˙annaq ma’ w˙ud mir-residenti.

Roundup of News About Malta PM describes the first two years of a labour government as:

‘Optimism for families and businesses’

A

t a press conference marking the first two years of a Labour government since the 2013 general election, Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat said the government’s achievements in these two years had turned a situation of stagnation into one of optimism for the future, particularly for families and businesses He explained that developments in the first two years of a Labour government resulted in a change for positivity in the country’s direction, and that the increase in investment, the creation of new jobs and the growing economy are all clear signs that Malta is well on its way forward. Listing a number of these achievements he said the government kept its promise to reduce water and electricity rates for domestic users by 25% and by the end of March it would also honour this promise by reducing by a similar amount the tariffs for businesses. When it comes to energy he said the government also kept its promise to switch off and close the 62-year-old Marsa power station, and later also said that the closing down of the power station was the biggest environmental achievement the south could have ever reached. “We are one step closer to the implementation of our energy plan,” he said, adding that “the environment doesn’t belong only to those who voice their opinion in the newspapers but it belongs to everyone. To those, who for decades suffered more than enough.” Dr Muscat said his government is going ahead with its plans to convert the current BWSC plant at Delimara to a new gasfired power station. Work on the interconnector with mainland Europe is also on

track The reduction in the electricity tariffs was one of the factors that helped Malta’s economy to grow and unemployment to fall to its lowest levels ever. He said that the free childcare that encouraged many women to go out to work boosted employment and also helped to improve Malta’s economy, changing the stagnant economy into a fast growing Prime Minister Dr Joseph Muscat adone that looks to the dressing the news conference about the future with optimism. first two years of a Labour government He pointed out high net worth people Hospital, providing more beds. rovisional estimates indicate that compared to the previous year, in 2041 there was an increase of 5.2 per cent (3.5 per cent in real terms) in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), amounting to €7,961.5 million. During 2014, growth in gross value added was mainly generated by public administration and defence; education; human health and social work activities; professional, scientific and technical activities; administrative and support service activities; wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food service activities.

2,937 new dwellings in 2014 he number of new dwellings approved by the Malta Environment T and Planning Authority in Malta shot up from 2,707 in 2013 to 2,937 in 2014. But the number of permits for new dwellings remains slightly lower than in 2012 when 3,064 new dwellings were approved, and a far cry from the 11,343 dwellings approved in 2007. According to official statistics in the same year, MEPA approved the highest number of maisonettes since 2008 and the second highest number of new units resulting from conversions of older buildings since 2000. The number of units created from re-development projects remains lower than in 2011, when 1,592 units were created, but higher than in 2012 and 2013.

Queen Elizabeth to attend Malta CHOGM in Nov.

Q

ueen Elizabeth II accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will visit Malta to open and attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that takes place in Valletta from November 27 to 29. The announcement, made by Buckingham Palace and the Maltese government said that Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, would also accompany the Queen, who will be 89 in November. In the meantime, Malta President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca and her husband, Edgar Preca had a second meeting with Queen Elizabeth in a few weeks (above) when they attended a reception at Marlborough House in London hosted by the Commonwealth’s Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma . During a lengthy talk with President Coleiro Preca about CHOGM in Malta the Queen said she was eagerly looking forward to the visit to Malta. This visit will be the monarch’s return to CHOGM after she missed the last meeting in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2013 – the first one she was unable to attend in 40 years. The Queen, then a Princess, and Prince Philip, then an officer in the Mediterranean Fleet, lived in Malta in their early-married life between 1949 and 1951. Since then Queen, Elizabeth visited Malta in May 1954, November 1967, May 1992, November 2005, when Malta hosted CHOGM for the first time, and in November 2007 when she came here on what was called her ‘second honeymoon – marking the 60th anniversary of her marriage. Prince Philip also visited the island for Malta’s Independence celebrations in 1964. This will be Prince Charles’ first visit to Malta with the Duchess.

he Maltese Government said it has acquired from the French Government the data, popularly known as Swiss Leaks, insofar as it relates to Maltese nationals. It was presented in Paris to the representative of the competent Maltese tax authority, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Revenue, and Malta’s Ambassador to France. The process to acquire the data was set in motion by PM Joseph Muscat in talks with French President Francois Hollande last month. It was followed by a formal request by the Maltese authorities on instructions by the Minister for Finance. The Government pointed out that these legal instruments make it clear that the information provided can be disclosed only to persons or author-

ities, including courts and administrative bodies, concerned with the assessment or collection of, the enforcement or prosecution in respect of, or the determination of appeals relating to, the said taxes. “As such, the Maltese authorities cannot publish the said list, in the same way as no authority in any other country published such information,” the government said in a statement. It added that persons appearing on list would not have necessarily evaded tax. However, in terms of the Income Tax Management Act the Prime Minister requested the Commissioner for Revenue to indicate to him any politically exposed persons who total 80.7 per cent of households in Malta and may be on the list and Gozo had access to the internet last year, while whose position apperegular internet users reached 239,225 (73.2 per cent ars to be or to have been compromised of the population aged 16 to 74). A quick glimpse at Australia

Australia is back in Iraq A

n extra 300 Australian troops are being sent to train Iraqis in the fight against the Islamic State terror group, with Tony Abbott refusing to rule out boosting the deployment further. The Prime Minister confirmed that about 300 Australian Defence Force soldiers would be sent to Iraq for a long-term training role at the Taji base north of Baghdad. He said the mission would last for two years. Flanked by the Chief of the Defence Force, Mark Binskin, and Defence Minister Kevin Andrews, Mr Abbott said the new deployment marked the "next phase" of Australia's contribution to fight the brutal group causing upheaval in the Middle East. "We have slowed Daesh's advance but Iraq's regular forces now require support to build their capacity to reclaim and to hold territory," Mr Abbott said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. The Australians will as expected partner with New Zealand forces, but the United States, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark will also contribute forces to help with training. "It would be wrong of me to say that this is the last that we will do here, but nevertheless what we are doing at this stage is prudent, it's proportionate," he said. Both Mr Abbott and Air Chief Marshal Binskin said there was a genuine risk of insider attacks by Iraqi soldiers on the Australians – so-called "green on blue" attacks that claimed several Australian lives in Afghanistan. "It's a real risk. It's a risk I take very seriously," Air Chief Marshal Binskin said.

Now for Regular and Priority letters C

abinet has approved a proposal by Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to introduce a twotiered pricing scheme for letter deliveries that is expected to see basic stamp prices increase to $1. The reforms will allow Australia Post to introduce a “regular” and “priority” letters service. Letters sent with a “regular” stamp will arrive an average of two days later than they do currently, with mail within metropolitan areas arriving a day later than the current timetable. Safeguards will be put in place so that prices remain frozen at current levels for concession cardholders, including pensioners. And Christmas cards could still be sent with a 65-cent stamp, Australia Post chief executive Ahmed Fahour said at a press conference in Melbourne on Tuesday. “These reforms mean we will be able to reduce our losses in the letters business and we will be aiming to get it back to break-even,” Mr Fahour said.

“The letters business won't make a profit, and that is not our objective. Our objective is to reduce the losses so that we can support five days a week delivery of mail and secure the future of post offices across the country.” Australia Post Austalia Post CEO would keep Ahmed Fahour about 4400 post offices, including 2500 in regional areas, and at least 10,000 post boxes. It currently has 15,805 post boxes. Posties would still deliver mail five days a week. Priority stamps are expected to cost around $1.50 when they are introduced and prices could rise to $2 in later years. The reforms are aimed at stemming the bleeding in Australia Post's letters division. Australia Post last week announced a first-half profit of just $98 million - a dive driven by mounting losses of $151 million in its letters business. A report by the Boston Consulting Group, commissioned by the government, forecast that Australia Post's letters business would lose $12 billion over the next decade. Australia Post management hopes the reforms announced by the government will cut these losses in half to $6 billion. Mr Fahour also defended his salary of $4.6 million a year - the highest paid public servant in Australia. The latest annual report revealed 409 managers and executives at Australia Post were earning more than $195,000 a year.

A quick glimpse at Australia

Intergenerational report

T

he Australian Human Rights Commission welcomes the release of the fourth Intergenerational Report, which outlines Australia's changing demographic. Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan says she's pleased the report recognises the gains older Australians offer by working longer. “Older workers have the wisdom and experience that so many workplaces need to improve their bottom line. It is essential that we find ways to increase their participation,” said Commissioner Ryan. The report shows the number of Australians aged 65 or over is projected to more than double by 2054-55. It states that participation rates among those aged 65 and over are projected to increase strongly

from 12.9 per cent in 2014-15 to 17.3 per cent in 2054-55. The report points out those gains in life expectancy mostly translate to healthy additional years. “The fact that we are living longer, healthy lives is great news for all of us but it means that we should be thinking about how we’ll use those years. We must shape our societies, communities and workplaces to make sure our older years are fulfilling and productive. The release of the Intergenerational Report should also inspire Government to look at a range of other policy measures, including those often put in the ‘too-hard basket’. “Tax benefits for those who’ve already

Susan Ryan got significant retirement savings could be better redirected to those with minimal savings and who are likely to be dependent on the age pension,” says Ms Ryan.

The Australian government has rejected the report outright. Tony Abbott said the UN’s representatives have a lot more credibility if

“The most humanitarian, the most decent, the most compassionate thing you can do is stop these boats because hundreds, we think about 1200 in fact drowned at sea during the flourishing of people smuggling trade under the former government. Australia is meeting all its international obligations.”

Dead, buried and cremated The Abbott government finally killed off the unpopular GP co-payment proposal after several attempts to reach agreement on different versions of the controversial charge failed. The Prime Minister said that as a former health minister he should have known better than to attempt health reform without the strong co-operation and support of the medical profession. The Health Minister Ms Ley said the government would push ahead with a freeze on indexation of Medicare rebates until 2018, "while we work with the profession to develop future policies". to say whether the freeze would be lifted at some point in the future. "It's definitely good policy to put the right price signals in health to make sure that people value the service they get from doctors," she said. I want to represent us well. I want people think highly of Australia. The Maltese Connection in Holroyd

istorian Mark Caruana delivered a very interesting talk about local H Maltese Heritage in Holroyd to the

tese community (now The Genista Nursing Home, The pastizzi shop in Irrigation Road, ‘il-˙anut ta’ Ganna’ on the Great Western Highway to name but a few. Many other meeting places and old places of work such as the Bonds Textile factory in Wentworthville and the many market gardens and poultry farms in Greystanes, were also mentioned. Mark is an avid researcher of many years and is also a migration historian. He gladly shared his knowledge and enjoyed explaining how he was able to get the information through interviews, archives, old Council

records as well as numerous interviews with residents of Holroyd and an Australia-wide explanation from his research. The members enjoyed the experience and Mark hopes to come back with an interactive workshop with the group so that their collective memories of the Maltese connection in the Holroyd area will be preserved for the next generation of Maltese-Australians to be passed on to their descendants. The Greystanes Seniors’ Group is supported by the Maltese Community Council of NSW.

Greystanes Maltese Seniors Group during their monthly meeting in the St George Preca Centre, of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Greystanes. The members all joined in and shared their many and varied memories of life in the Holroyd area, especially around Pendle Hill (also known as Little Malta) and also many interesting facts about the Maltese connection in the Greystanes, Merrylands and Wentworthville areas. Mark interacted very well with the Marisa Previtera group and was able to provide some interesting and little known facts that the members could relate to. Well known successful Maltese business families, such as Zammit’s Meats, Bajada and Cordina chicken outlets. Many happy memories were shared of Maltese functions held in the old hall on Old Prospect Road known as ‘is-Sala tal-G˙asfur’, which was often Members of the Greystanes Maltee Seniors listening attentively to Mark used by the MalCaruana’s talk about the local Maltese Heritage in Holroyd

MCC Oral history project - Maltese Personalities I

n order to preserve our Maltese-Australian heritage for posterity, the MCC of NSW has embarked on videorecording the settlement experiences of Maltese personalities. The oral history interviews are con-

ducted in English on Wednesdays mornings. The time taken varies from 60-90 minutes and are done by Mark Caruana, who has been doing such interviews since 1982. At the end of the interview, the person interviewed is asked to do any necessary editing and to furnish four photos to be included in the DVD cover.

The MCC will produce seven DVDs, five of which go to the family, one to the MCC Archives and one to the National Library in Canberra. A donation of $50 to cover costs would be appreciated. Anybody wishing to have his settlement history recorded, is requested to contact Emanuel Camilleri on 9822 0228.

Community News Coach trip to Australian War Museum & Memorial in Canberra As part of the 100th Anniversary of the Anzac’s Commemoration, the Sutherland & St.George Maltese Group will be visiting the Australian War Museum & Memorial in Canberra on Wednesday April 8. It will be an official guided tour, but those who decline to participate in the guided tour are free to do so. This War Museum is the Fifth largest of its kind in the World, therefore it would be a very interesting and informative visit. The Museum also has a small section dedicated to Malta. We will be travelling in a modern and luxurious 5 Star Coach that will leave from Miranda at 8:00am sharp. Another pick-up point will be Liverpool Bus Terminal at Bigge St Liverpool at 8.30 a.m. Then we travel to Canberra stopping on the way for morning tea, etc, at Goulburn. We will then have Lunch and visit the Museum. We plan to leave Canberra to return home at approximately 4:00pm, again stopping at Goulburn for Afternoon Tea or a meal. We expect to get back to Liverpool at around 7:30pm, and Miranda by 8:00pm. We aim to stick to these times as much as is possible. However, some variances may occur. The Coach is equipped with a toilet and a TV monitor, allowing us to watch a feature film on the return trip. In order to ensure that passengers enjoy maximum comfort, we are restricting the number of passengers to 48. The total cost for the coach trip is $42 per person. Anybody interested is advised to contact Charles Mifsud on his mobile: 0421 662 298 A.S.A.P.

The Voice of the Maltese way back in September (Issue No. 84) after her amazing achievements thanks to hard work and training, also made it to the front page of the Capmpbelltown Macarthur Chronicle (see front page). The current under-10s girls’ Australian champion and reigning NSW champion was lost for words as she accepted her medal from MC and Fox Sports presenter Adam Peacock. But her mother, Kris made up for that. She said her daughter was overwhelmed by the attention. “She gets a bit anxious and nervous in front of big crowds,” Mrs Pace said. “She was really excited to win but she al-
