Carnival 2017 in Malta - a tribute to the hundreds of participants who contributed to make it such a spectacular show

Malta Carnival 2017 -a tribute to the participants n our childhood days, Carnival time in Malta was a most welcome occasion, not just for the mid-term holidays from school, but most importantly it was an occasion when our parents would carry us kids to Valletta to spend a few hours to watch the colourful floats on the back of large trucks with youths – girls and boys - on top making merry and singing to popular music or blowing on whistles. People used to fill Merchant Street and Republic Street (then still known as Strada Reale) to the brim doing their best to find vintage points for their kids to be able to enjoy the spectacle. In our family we were never encouraged or denied from putting on carnival costumes, and to be honest we did not even bother. However, we enjoyed seeing other kids or grown ups in costumes or donning masks to hide their identity or for a laugh. And we laughed a lot about this fact as those whom we used to call “clowns” paraded the streets of our village or in the streets of Valletta. Nowadays, either because it is the wish of their parents, or the kids themselves, they like to dress up and join others, at school, private parties or during the defiles in Valletta. We all enjoy seeing these kids happy imagining themselves as being some cartoon character or hero. Though there have been times when Carnival’s popularity seemed on the wane, in the past few years it was given a fresh boost, particularly when two years ago the government lifted the ban on the use of political satire. As such, satirical floats became as important, as the grotesque, and perhaps even more popular as watchers were given the chance to try and recognise faces of local politicians and figure out the situations or messages the float builders wanted to pass. Satire is indeed on the increase. Each year brings new innovations as the dedicated participants and the organisers build on previous successes. Much progress has been made in all sectors and even more progress is envisaged for the future, particularly after the government announced the commencement of the Carnival Project, which means that a long-drawn dream of the Carnival participants should soon come into fruition. In fact, work on the Malta Carnival Experience (Carnival Village) should start soon after the Planning Authority approved all the necessary permits. The Minister responsible for culture even promised to continue to support Maltese talent that also includes all the people who work on the floats, grotesque masks, costumes, dancers, performers and musicians who year in year out successfully organise this event that brings so much joy to people from all walks of life irrespective of their political leanings.

An event that for at least five days unites the community are publishing, shot by professional photographers clearly bring to life most of what the locals, and tourists witnessed during the Malta Carnival 2017. Therefore let us feast our eyes on these beautiful pictures and admire the work of the Maltese craftsman and artist who keep alive one of the oldest and most enjoyable traditions, the Maltese Carnival that can also be explained as a distraction from politics as it is an event that at least for five days also unites the community. Meanwhile, the dates for next year’s Carnival have already been announced. It will be between Friday February 9 and Tuesday the 13th, 2018. JosephCutajar *from page 2 Today Carnival participants are looking forward to the completion of the Carnival project, which is to be financed from European Union funds (ERDF), is aimed at having activities running throughout the year. It will bring together various artists in their work and in the end could prove to be the breath of fresh air needed to preserve this annual celebration and even improve its standard. Minister Owen Bonnici further announced that in May, Malta would also host the annual convention of the Federation of European Carnival Cities with the participation of delegates from over 20 countries. Even more support for Carnival this year came from ‘The Valletta 2018 Foundation’ that committed itself to further investment in Carnival, particularly in the quality of the activities and the number of activities that took place inside and outside of Valletta. This year’s Carnival was superb. The colourful and very artistic floats and merriment pulled vast crowds to Valletta, Hamrun - on Sunday morning, with the participation of five bands marching along the streets accompanied by a number of floats - and Floriana, especially in Tuesday night’s grand defilé in St Anne’s Street - and in the case of Gozo to Republic Street and It-Tokk Square at Victoria. This year’s even helped to further enhance some old traditions that had almost been lost in past years. The floats this time round were of a very high standard, huge in size and even more artistic than usual. Among the 17 floats was a special one. Since Malta currently holds he EU Presidency, one of the floats, designed by renowned cartoonist Steve Bell and constructed by the Maltese Carnival participants, was dedicated to the presidency. This special edition of The Voice of the Maltese is dedicated to all those who have worked so hard to make such a success of the event. The pictures we

An extra 100 waste bins were provided for the Carnival days.

ERIK and ELSA DAHLBERG: We are very happy to be here at this time of year and to be able to join in the merriment. We are from Stockholm (Sweden). Malta has always fascinated us as though it is quite small compared to other European countries it has so much to offer. This is our second visit to Malta but the first time that we have been here at Carnival time and able to be part of it. We are very impressed with the show and believe that our congratulations to those who have made it possible would be most appropriate. We are also happy to have been able to feel so welcome in these surroundings. We also enjoyed the way that the people, locals and foreigners felt they could integrate and feel part of the event. LAWRENCE u CARMEN (St Albans, Victoria): Mhix l-ewwel darba li Ωorna Malta f’dan iΩ-Ωmien. Ìieli konna hawn insegwu l-Karnival. L-a˙˙ar darba kien ˙ames snin ilu imma qatt ma ˙adna gost inkunu parti minn din il-festa daqs din id-darba. Konna impressjonati bil-livell g˙oli tal-artisti Maltin biex jibnu karrijiet b˙al dawn. A˙na attendejna g˙addefile` ta’ nhar is-Sibt bil-lejl u wkoll illum fl-a˙˙ar jum fil-Furjana. Tassew ˙adna gost imma l-aqwa eperjenza tag˙na kienet li naraw il-karrijiet mixg˙ulin tard filg˙axija u lbrijju li ˙olqu Ω-Ωeffiena.

PETER BEVAN: I come from Wales. My wife is Maltese. I married Gina (by the way she is from Marsa) three years ago and this is our first visit to Malta together. My wife is an avid reader of your magazine that she gets from her mother who in turn receives it through an email. Perhaps I should say that one of the reasons that we came to Malta this winter was because of the good things you keep saying about Malta in the magazine. I am a keen swimmer and my initial intention was to visit the island in the summer to make use of my snorkelling experience. However we reached a compromise and after this exciting experience we are set to visit again perhaps in July/August. If this is the way that Malta celebrates Carnival every time, then I would say I am very impressed. The merriment and the atmosphere created by the dancers accompanying the very artistically built floats are most enjoyable. I never thought it would be so interesting to visit Valletta at this time of night during Carnival. I also intend to visit the defile’ during the day on Sunday. Congratulations! MIRIAM SANT (Fairfield, NSW): Din l-ewwel Ωjara li qed nag˙mel f’Malta mindu mietli r-ra©el erba’ snin ilu. Ìieli ©ejna fil-jiem tal-Karnival g˙aliex meta kien Ωg˙ir ir-ra©el kienu jie˙u sehem s˙i˙ fih. Li kieku kien g˙adu ˙aj u jara dan l-ispettaklu kien jibqa’ imprssonat bil-progress. Veru l-Maltin saru kapaçissmi biex juru t-talent tag˙hom. Ti©ini nostal©ija li ner©a’ ni©i ng˙ix Malta. Li jΩomni hu biss iΩ-Ωew© uliedi u lfamilji tag˙hom fl-Awstralja JURGEN and MARTA FISHCER (Gummersbach, Germany): Very impressed with the atmosphere and also with what Malta, such a small country is capable of doing. You must have many talented people to be able to organise such an occasion and provide so many beautiful and colourful floats. This must be an added attraction.

Is-satira politika tat spinta qawwija lill-Karnival Malti *minn pagna 10 B’din il-˙ar©a nixtiequ nag˙tu ©ie˙ lil dawk in-nies kollha li ming˙ajr ˙idmiethom il-pajjiΩ ma jkollux cans jiççelebra avveniment li storikament jaf il-bidu tieg˙u fl-1400, imma li fl-1535 il-Gran Mastru Piero del Ponte tah il-vera ispinta bg˙ax beda jkun organizzat ‘professjonalment’.
