Following initial immediate aid packages, the foundation has pledged a further $3 6 million over the past three months, from May to July, to help the Church in Ukraine

“The worst consequences of the war will not be felt in the short term: the psycholog ical, physical and humanitarian effects will only become apparent later Only God can heal the deeper wounds, but we can try to soften the more immediate needs and sup port the local Church so that it can remain on the ground,” says Thomas Heine Geldern, executive president of ACN Inter national Magda Kaczmarek, who has headed the foundation’s Projects in Ukraine for the past 14 years, said, “the Church is the an chor that keeps the boat steady through the changing tides”

The event is linked to the Strategy for Malta’s Foreign Policy’s section referring to the Maltese diaspora and its first pillar of the action plan that refers to Connectivity aimed to bring Maltese youth from all over the world to work together and share ideas on the chosen theme: I want to Connect: Maltese language, culture and identity. The readers are being requested to share with all the Maltese Associations in NSW and all of their email contacts They are also being encouraged to make use of So cial Media to disseminate this with their on line contacts

Pontifical foundation Aid to the Church in Need that also has a branch in Malta, has sent more than $7 million in emergency aid and other support to Ukraine since the coun try was invaded by Russia in February.

The Australian office of ACN has con tributed over $360,000 of this support

“The main concern and fear that every body feels has to do with the coming of winter, but now they are also worried that by the end of August the shortage of food and fuel will have become even more seri ous,” Ms Kaczmarek said

At this momentous time, speaking about globalisation and the eradica tion of borders is a rapidly evolving reality that affects each and every one of us In this regard, the significance of being Maltese takes a universal dimension We are Maltese because we are citizens of the world, and we are citizens of the world because we happen to be connected to a particular cultural reality. The two are inter linked with the fundamental premise that there cannot be one without the other The Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade in Malta is organising the 1st Virtual Youth Forum for Maltese Living Abroad with the aim to enhance connectiv ity amongst young Maltese and young peo ple of Maltese descent living abroad.

Of the $7 million, $4 7 million was sent to Ukraine for emergency and subsistence aid, including money for dioceses to offset the most urgent needs in their regions

Q. I am 82 and finding it hard to go out. I have a friend that does my shop ping for me but I feel that I need to ap point someone to be able to withdraw money from the bank on my behalf on a regular basis Can you advise me on what I should do to organise this?

This document contains factual information only and is not intended to provide any recommendation or opinion in re lation to the topic/s discussed Fiducian recommends that you seek advice from a pro fessional to address any issues that may be raised by this article Fiducian accepts no liability for any loss suffered by anyone who has acted on any information in this document

A The amount that a person can invest in super as a non concessional contribu tion is limited to $110,000 per annum

By moving out of her home and renting it out, she will be treated as a non home owner and the value of her home will be come an asset. This means that your mother will lose her age pension completely and fi nancially may be in a worse position The rent received will also be treated as taxable income and she may need to pay tax on it

Q. My mother is 85, on the full age pension and lives in her own home worth at least $1 5 million She is finding it too hard to look after her home but does not wish to sell it. She wishes to rent and move into a unit and rent out her own home. This would leave her with more money to live on rather than just the age pension. Is she able to do this or will this affect her age pension?

A. When one inherits shares, they do not pay capital gains tax unless the shares are sold If you purchased these shares from your children, they will have to pay tax on the capital gain that they make, as they would be selling their shares to you

Q I am 65 and just retired, my hus band is also 65 and still working. I am planning to commence an account based pension with my superannuation funds. I have a term deposit maturing in October for $150,000. Am I able to invest this money in superannuation or am I limited to a certain amount?

Tuesday, August 30, 2022 The Voice of the Maltese 3

A. I think you could consider setting up a Power of Attorney for someone you trust to operate your bank account This would be a general power of attorney with the person nominated to be limited to just withdrawing money on your behalf from just one partic ular account You can then ask for a receipt every time they make a withdrawal for you that would show the amount withdrawn and the bal ance in the account and you can monitor your ac count this way Q My mother passed away three months ago. She left me, her only child, and my two children a large portfo lio of direct shares each. She had asked us not to sell the shares if possible, but to hold onto them, as they would provide us with tax effective income and growth. My children would rather sell these shares, as the income from the sale would pay off a good part of their mortgage If I buy them from my chil dren, would I need to pay any tax on these shares? The amount involved is quite significant.

A.

Q. My father gifted my sister and me $100,000 each nearly five years ago. Centrelink are still treating these funds as his assets and they told us that this would be for five years, and after that they are removed from his asset list. As we are coming close to the five years do we need to remind Centrelink of this or do they do it automatically? This would entitle my father to the full age pension.

The cost base is the price that your mother would have purchased them for This is a monthly service offered by The Voice of the Maltese in which Marie Louise Muscat from the Fiducian Financial Services helps our readers under stand the complexities associated with financial plan ning. If you need more advice send an email to Marie Louise via: maltesevoice@gmail.com. and therefore this could be quite a large sum especially if she has held them for a long time and bought them at a very low price I would suggest prior to doing any thing, you should ask your children to visit their accountant to work out the amount of tax they would have to pay on the capi tal gain

There are a number of options she can look at rather than this move I would sincerely advise your mother to see a financial plan ner to provide her with various options. This way she will be able to make an in formed decision

A. I believe that your father should visit a Centrelink office and advise them on this. This will ensure that the funds have been removed from being treated as his assets He would know whether this has happened once he received his pension, as this would be noted in the amount of pension he receive

Q & QA & A

However, you have an option of using the ‘bring forward cap ’ and this allows you to invest up to $330,000 for the next three year period It may help you to seek advice from a financial planner

“During my later years at High School and then at University, uranium mining in Australia was a big issue, and the Peace movement in Australia (as well as in Britain) was gaining momentum Youth unemploy ment was also at a record high “I became interested in these issues and then in broader social justice concerns I began to attend forums and listen to some great local women politicians addressing these matters such as Meredith Burgmann, Susan Ryan, Ann Symonds, and Jeannette McHugh”

When the new mayor left University she practiced as a solicitor for 16 years, working for the law firm Turner Freeman Solicitors She helped them to open their Parramatta Office where the focus was acting for workers in their compensation and personal injury claims Given their Western Sydney base, it wasn’t long however, before the main attention shifted to the many workers (including Mal tese) who were suffering from asbestos related diseases Her boss, a great lawyer, Armando Gardiman, had forged a way for asbestos victims to claim damages for their terrible suffering and the numbers of these cases increased dramatically in the late 1980’s and throughout 90’s

As a councillor of Holroyd City Council and when in May 2016, the name was changed to Cumberland City Council, Lisa Lake hardly ever missed attending the Sette Giugno celebra tion at Pendle Hill NSW This year she was the guest of honour as the new Mayor of this 72 sq km (27.8 sq miles) municipality of 216,079 resi dents Very well known to the Maltese, The Voice of the Maltese decided to feature the new mayor as this month’s personality.

Clr Lisa Lake

H e l p i n g M a l t e s e a s b e s t o s c e m e n t f a c t o r y v i c t i m s

M ayor Lisa Lake is 58 years old, married with an adult son. She grew up in the suburb of Ryde and has lived in Wentworthville now for 32 years Her dad was a boil ermaker who worked at Shell Oil in Clyde and her mum was a primary school teacher She was raised in the Catholic faith and attended St Therese Primary School in Denistone, Our Lady of Mercy College in Ep ping She spent her senior years schooling at Marist Sisters’ Col lege, Woolwich, and her tertiary education at Macquarie University where she gradu ated with Bachelor degrees in Law and Economics in 1986 Lisa Lake told The Voice of the Maltese the reasons why she became involved in pol itics

Lisa followed their lead and joined the Australian Labor Party, and soon after became active in Young Labor “Eventually I was elected on to the Executive of the NSW Young Labor Council and it was there that I began to work with many progressive young students, unionists, and workers. Some of them have risen through the ranks over the years to become great lawyers, union leaders and members of Parliament (including of course our new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese!).”

It was during this time that our Personality of the Month, acted for several fathers and grandfathers of local Maltese families These men were migrants who had come to Sydney in the 1950s and 1960s and found work at the asbestos cement factories in Camellia, among them James Hardie and Wunderlich. With a reputation for hard work and loyalty, these men were readily employed by these companies to work on their factory floors and were exposed daily to heavy concentrations of air borne dust containing asbestos. In later years they contracted serious and often fatal illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma It was Lisa’s job to interview them about their working lives in Malta and Aus tralia, their diagnoses, and their suffering, and prepare lengthy statements for their damages claims in the Dust Diseases Tribu nal. (Cumberland Council continues to honour these gentlemen at a Workers Memorial Day held annually in May at the Holroyd Brickworks ) In 2012, spurred into action by moves to close down and abolish much loved community pool in Wentworthville, Lisa Lake de cided to turn her attention to local politics and use the skills that she had built up over the years helping others in their elections, to run for election herself She was elected a Councillor for the North Ward of Holroyd City Council and served in that capacity until the Council itself was abolished in 2016 In 2017 she was elected Councillor to the newly formed Cumberland Council in the Wentworthville Ward and was re elected to that job in 2021 Then in January 2022, with a Labor majority now on Council, Lisa Lake was elected by her peers to be Cumberland’s first fe male Mayor

It was obvious that this had nothing to do with gender equality: women were not wanted as equals but as cheap labourers, as wives and, by extension, mothers They earned in wages, an average of nine pounds a year This was an exercise in ex ploitation

The promise of a new life was full of risks. On the arrival in Sydney of the Red Rover the Sydney gazette and the NSW advertiser reported it as any other type shipped to the colony Until they found employment the women from the Red Rover were housed in makeshift accommodation in a disused lumberyard that today is the site of an of fice block in 13 15 Bridge Street Sydney

Requested to give our readers a message for the future she said, “I’m looking for ward to seeing more translating resources, less jargon, and more face to face consul tation through workshops, reference groups, and panels I’m really happy to see our Advisory committees being reformed “These committees have the potential to give community members a real say in our decision making. Also, our community grants programme needs to expand and support community leaders and advocates building on their good work.

L ooking back at the way Australia was populated by white colonizers is not only interesting but very in triguing. Australia’s population history is not very old. It was only in the 18th cen tury that the white colonizers reached Australia

Pressed by The Voice, Lisa Lake said, “The responsibility for this position is a heavy one but I share this task with a great and diverse team of Councillors who are committed to improving our area for everyone As a Council, I think we need to work harder in our engagement with our various communities to understand better their in terests and concerns. That’s how we build trust and credibility”

“We’re expecting 300,000 people in Cumberland by 2036 ”

“Finally, it is essential that we build a strong dialogue with our State and Federal Governments so they can better under stand our needs The endgame is to have sufficient funds to deliver on the ground all of the infrastructure and programmes that are required for our rapidly growing population

The Committee for promoting the Emi gration of single women offered free pas sage from Ireland to Sydney. Many boarded the Red Rover in Cork and arrived in Sydney on August 10 1832 following a four month voyage They were all of childbearing age and intended to assist in the growing need for domestic servants and to help balance the male dominated ratio in the colony

From Ireland to Sydney on a free passage

Australia’s population history

In 1832, in the early days of the colony, Australia's migrant men outnumbered women by as much as six to one The Government sought a solution to this problem by arranging for a British gov ernment emigration scheme to attract un married settlers, mostly from stricken poverty in Ireland

“We must continue to assist our commu nities to build their capacity so that they have the skills and the knowledge to con trol and direct their own lives Our com munity is caring, compassionate, and generous with their time and a lot can be done by and through the community with a bit of good coordination.

The extraordinary stories of Gorton didn’t start there; they ac tually started at birth Firstly, up till now his birth certificate has never been found. It is thought that John Gorton was born on 9th J ohn Gorton will probably be most known for the extraordi nary way in which he was catapulted into the Prime Ministership. Everything started, as I had written in The Voice (No. 276), when the PM of the time Harold Holt had disappeared in December 1967 during a swim. John McEwen, the leader of the Country Party which was in coalition with the Liberal Party, had been appointed as interim PM, until the Liberal Party, of which Gorton was a member, selected a new leader.

I am amazed that Gorton was not chal lenged on this while he was Prime Minis ter, especially after he himself had revealed in 1968 that he had been born in New Zealand, the same year he became prime minister. Some argue that Gorton in fact was never even eligible to serve in parliament 2 Before entering politics, Gorton had gone to England to study history, politics and economics at Oxford University, aiming to become a journalist Upon graduation, dur ing a visit to Spain he met his future wife Bettina Brown They got married in 1935 and came to Australia and to live at Lake Kangaroo, close to Victoria’s border with South Aus tralia, where his father had an orchard called Mystic Lake. During the war Gorton served in the RAAF and had quite a few hair raising ad ventures In Singapore, he crash landed his aeroplane and hurt his face badly. Upon being saved by an ammunition ship, this was sunk by a Japanese submarine, and he floated for 24 hours in a dinghy until being rescued by yet another ship. When he recovered he was taken to Dar win where he had an emergency landing with his plane on a sandy beach Later, he had a third potentially fatal accident when his plane flipped during take off T he choice of leader on 9th January 1968 fell on John Gorton The very next day he was sworn in as Prime Minister He immediately had to resign from the Senate, as an Australian Prime Minister had to be a member of the House of Representatives (the lower house) This means that initially, Prime Minister Gorton was not even a member of parliament After his Senate resignation, Gorton contested the election for the seat of Higgins of the House of Representatives (the one that Harold Holt used to represent), which he won on 24th February 1968, and a week later on 1st March was sworn into the House.1

John Gorton. seated left, as a student at Geelong Grammar School in 1930

After about 20 years, his father told him he had actually been born in Wellington, New Zealand, and from then onwards John Gorton (the son) started using that place name to apply for important activi ties in his life, such as when wanting to be a pilot, going to col lege in Oxford and joining the Royal Aus tralian Air Force (RAAF) But apart from this, it seems that he kept this information to himself

The father is named as John Robert Gor ton and his mother Alice Sinn. However, his father was in fact John Rose Gorton

The split between Gorton and his party finally ended when he was accepted back as a member in 1999. In 1977 he was knighted John Gorton died at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney on 19th May 2002. He was 90 years old The Voice of the Maltese

On 13th August 1971, Gorton published the first of a series of articles on his time as PM, and was accused by McMahon of divulging cabinet secrets He was asked to resign, which he duly did. He remained in parliament until 1975 even after the tables were turned and the Labor Party was in government, but by then the division between himself and the Liberal Party was becoming a chasm. There was much mutual loathing between him and Malcolm Fraser, and after the lat ter became leader of the party, Gorton re signed from the party

The next day, the Liberal Party had a de bate and held a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, that resulted in 33 33 Gorton declared that this was not a vote of confidence, and resigned In a subsequent election for leader of the party, William McMahon was elected, and surprisingly John Gorton put his hand up for deputy leader He was also elected From then, Gorton started serving as the Minster for Defence, and was noted for his opposition to Australian troops being sta tioned outside the country, and criticised the defence forces as being unprepared

As PM relaxed and with a tendency to be unorthodox

On 2nd October 1983, his wife Bettina, with whom he had three children, died of cancer Ten years later he married Nancy Home

In that year, he was so against the deci sion of the Coalition in the Senate to block supply to the Labor government of Gough Whitlam, and the subsequent decision for Governor Kerr to appoint Malcolm Fraser as an acting Prime Minister, that he en couraged Australians to vote for the Labor Party and not the party of which he was a member for so long and even led He himself sought election as an inde pendent, but was not successful, and imme diately retired from politics, although he remained a public figure, especially on radio and television programmes, and other activities such as the controversial cam paign for the legalisation of marijuana

When a swing against the party tran spired in the 1969 (House of Representa tives) and 1970 (half the Senate) elections, this hostility to him only increased.

In 1971, there was some friction between the army and the Department of Defence on Vietnam, and Malcolm Fraser who was then the Minister of Defence was accused of being disloyal towards the army Fraser resigned from his position, and the next day accused Gorton in parliament that he did not deserve to occupy the office of Prime Minister

Prime Minister Gorton was in favour of increasing the responsibilities of the Aus tralian Commonwealth, resisted increasing the Australian contribution to the Vietnam war (against army advice), promoted the use of nuclear energy (with Australian ura nium) and generally the exploitation of Australian natural energy resources by Australian companies, provided free health care for hundreds of thousands of poor people, increased handouts to the needy and introduced different bands for income tax depending upon income On the other hand, he maintained the pol icy of aboriginal assimilation into the pop ulation, and the system of direct interven tion of the Commonwealth of Australia in the education, health and housing sectors He strongly opposed the concept of abo riginal land rights, arguing that this might lead to separatism With time, the ranks of enemies to his rule started swelling, especially within his own (Liberal) party Their objections were several policies that were seen as diverg ing from the party’s traditional values, for eign policy, his style and general actions and, above all, a suspicion that he had Labor sympathies

Gorton entered politics when putting for ward his candidature for the Victorian Legislative Council (that state’s upper chamber of parliament) in 1949 as part of the Liberal and Country Party (LCP) that had just been set up, and almost got elected He had greater success a year later when he was elected to the Senate of the Aus tralian Federation as part of Menzies’ Lib eral and Country party coalition. In 1958 he became a Minister for the Navy, and a Minister for Works and Education in 1963 Five years later he became Prime Minis ter His style was relaxed, speaking his mind and a tendency to be unorthodox in what he says, and not too worried about his dress taste Gorton was careful to have a life outside of work and found the time to go for a swim, play tennis, attend parties after hours and have a chat with friends He had a reputation for not necessarily accepting advice from the top brass of the public service, and had a habit of consult ing directly further down the ranks, which created tension with the upper levels of the public service.

*In the next issue, we will feature Stanely Melbourne Bruce who became PM when he was 39 years on 9th February 1923

Mgr Philip Calleja the founder of Migrants Commission dies at 93 A shield for those uprooted from their home Mgr Philip Calleja (right) presented with the Dun Mikiel Azzopardi award in 2018

Mgr Philip Calleja, the founder of the Migrants Commission in 1950 died on 16th August at Dar tal Kleru in Fleur de Lys, at the age of 93 For more than 70 years he also occupied the position of Director of said Commission and worked tirelessly for Maltese emigrants and in later years, also for migrants in Malta Until two years ago at the age of 91, the Mgr. was still attending reg ularly at Dar L Emi grant to offer his service Mgr Alfred Vella, his successor as director in 2003 who had worked with him for about 18 years, de scribed him as a “per severant” person always determined to help those in need Mgr Calleja, also known amongst old timers as Dun Philip used to make himself available at the Dar next door to the en trance of Upper Bar rakka, to give advice or assitance to whoever needed them. It was only because of the pandemic that he suspended this service Philip Calleja was born on 8th December 1928 in Valletta and was ordained a priest on 2nd August 1953 His first pastoral work was mainly with the children of Val letta but in 1956, Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi appointed him Deputy of the Office of Marriages, of the Archbishop's Curia and in later years held various other posts in the Curia, including administrative sec retary and chancellor In 1950 due to the exodus of Maltese em igrating to other countries, he founded the Migrants Commission within the Maltese Catholic Action movement in response to the great exodus of Maltese people to other countries He was appointed as its first director In 1967, Philip Calleja became Rector of the Jesuit church in Valletta, where he gave priestly service throughout his whole life, so much so that he used to call it "my church." Two years later he was appointed Monsi gnor and organised, and also led the first Convention of Maltese Migrants, for which thousands of emigrants came to Malta He was very well known for his work among uprooted people, first as the cham pion of post war Maltese migrants and their families and then as the leading pio neer defender of refugees seeking protec tion and help in Malta. He offered assis tance to those making plans to live abroad and through the Commission also helped immigrants and refugees in Malta He led by example, even hosting migrants in his Valletta home He built Dar L Emigrant in 1971 in Castille Square, a living monument to the Maltese migrants. The Dar has currently become a centre for information and assis tance to many refugees In the 1990s Mgr Calleja dedicated him self to the needs of the first groups of peo ple reaching Malta seeking international protection and solidarity, and under his in spiring and assiduous leadership, during the decade the Emigrants’ Commission catered for almost 3,000 asylum seekers from 39 countries, de fending their refugee rights and making sure they had a roof on their heads. He was committed to providing shelter for refugees, so much so, that by 2020 the Com mission had 14 houses that sheltered around 400 refugees He made several visits to Australia

According to Fr Lawrence Attard, a migration researcher and historian, the his tory of migration from the Maltese islands, especially post war migration, is now to a great extent the his tory of the Emigrants' Commission He said, “The Commission was providentially fortunate in that, since 1953, it has had as its driving force Mgr Philip Calleja, who, since then, has dedi cated his priestly life to migrants and to all people whose life has been affected by emigration.”

In a tweet, Archbishop Charles Scicluna said Mgr Calleja “was truly a brother to our migrants: MIGRANTIUM FRATER! [migrant brother] May he Rest In Peace!”

Mass exploitation of temporary migrant workers

Stephen Donaghue, QC, Common wealth solicitor general found that ex PM Morrison's secret ministerial appointments were legal but added that the failure to make those appointments secret from cabinet colleagues and the public was not consistent with the principle of “responsible government” as laid out in the second chapter of the Constitution. Chapter II of the Constitution is “deliber ately” vague in detail when it comes to the executive powers of the Commonwealth.

The solicitor general found Mr Hurley's actions were consistent with convention

The institute's International and Security Affairs Pro gramme also found almost one in four Australians believe Beijing will launch an attack on Taiwan in the near future, compared with just one in 20 of the island's people

A ustralians are more worried about being attacked by China than their Taiwanese counterparts are, re search suggests, with one in 10 Australians believing that China would attack, which is double the number in Tai wan who fear a similar offensive, according to the Australia Institute

The union is also calling for more fund ing for vocational training, as well as com monwealth subsidies for apprentice wages

Most members of the United Nations, including Australia, do not recognise Taiwan as a separate country. The research found slightly more Australians (85 per cent) than Taiwanese (80 per cent) perceived China as aggressive But both groups said it was the United States who was the aggressor.

“Our migration and skills systems are broken,” ACTU president Michele O'Neil said. “This has resulted in the mass ex ploitation of temporary migrant workers and the neglect and decay of our skills training system.”

The Australian Council of Trade Unions wants to see workers offered im proved wages and conditions before re sorting to migration to plug labour gaps. It supports boosting migration if these con ditions are met, but also wants better treat ment of migrants working in Australia. This includes abolishing visa conditions that tie workers to a sole employer, and stopping employers from hiring migrants if they have a history of underpaying or mistreating workers

According to the federal government's Skill Priority List, the jobs most in de mand in the future over the next five years in Australia are expected to be: Construc tion managers, Civil engineering profes sionals, Early childhood teachers, Registered nurses, ICT business and sys tems analysts, Software and applications programmers, Electricians, Chefs, Child carers, and Aged and disability carers

Key results: A surge in support has de livered Labor a primary vote of 42 per cent, up from 32 6 per cent at the election in May, while the Coalition has sunk from 36 to 28 per cent in the same three month period When it comes to preferred prime min ister, Anthony Albanese has a command ing lead over Peter Dutton of 55 to 17 per cent. Following the success of teal can didates, support for independents has in creased from 5 to 8 per cent

The big issues: Voters backed the Coalition on economic management and national security before the election, but Labor has now snatched leads on both of these key issues. Labor also significantly extended its leads on jobs and wages, climate and the environment, the cost of living, health care and Indigenous affairs What it means: “It's not uncommon for a new government to enjoy a honey moon period where voters are hopeful for change under the new management,” said Resolve director Jim Reed “But the size of Labor's vote gain is more than that. This is a relieving elec torate affirming they collectively made the right choice ”

oters appear to be pleased with the Albanese government's first three months in power, the latest results from the SM Herald's Resolve Political Monitor show, but will it last or is it just a honeymoon period?

uring a visit to Thursday Island (above) Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with members of the Torres Strait Regional Authority He vowed his trip would not be his last to the region as Prime Minister and told community leaders he wanted to leave "per manent footprints" and see real change

More than 35,000 cases in 92 countries, and 12 deaths, have now been reported to the WHO In Australia, there have been 89 (confirmed and probable) infections Al most all new cases are being reported from Europe and the Americas.

Those most at risk have been prioritised for the initial phase, with more supply ex pected to arrive later this year and into 2023

“The Uluru statement is a very generous handout from people where the gap is there I see this as something that won't just benefit Indigenous Australians; it will benefit all Aus tralians,” he said Mr Albanese travelled to the Torres Strait with Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney and Queensland senator Nita Green, for discussions on what an Indigenous voice might look like “The voice ... is a very modest request in my view, but it's a request that should be met with absolute acceptance,” Mr Albanese said “As a step towards how we improve the engage ment that needs to occur to fully reconcile our nation."

The Spartans finished their adventure hav ing surpassed three qualifying rounds to be come the first Malta representatives in history to achieve it. The adventure was fine while it lasted Ħamrun end their historic run in Europe Meanwhile, Malta’s U/16 team (pic tured above) participated with con siderable success in their first World Championships in Volos, Greece They started with a 9 7 win voer the USA and then brushed aside Kazakhstan 13 3 to top Group F to qualify to face Group G winners Turkey for a place in the top eight. However, they found the Turks much too strong in the Gold/Platinum Group and lost 8 14 Next, they played Egypt for a place in the positional play offs from ninth to16 and won 8 6 to again face the USA. This time they lost 6 10 and finally met Brazil and suffered a 7 9 defeat to finish 12th U/16s 12 in their first world Championship

In fact, after holding reign ing Champions Hibernians to a 1 1 draw in their open ing match, they came out guns blazing in their second game against newly pro moted Pieta Hotspurs and hit the target six times with out reply for a 6 0 win Hibernians again start favourites for the title, but besides Valletta, Floriana, and most certainly Ħamrun would be giving them a good run for their money. They kicked off their de fence of the title with the re spective rounds’ top games

Unfortunately, Karl Izzo will be without four top players Steve Camilleri, Jordan Camilleri, Jake Muscat and Jerome Ga baretta who could not make the trip. In their place, the coach called up four young promising players The 2022/23 Premier League football Cham pionship in Malta kicked off a fortnight ago with the teams that dominated the last term again expected to be among the front runners. But by the looks of things, they could be joined among others by Valletta who have already distinguished them selves after two rounds.

M onday evening Malta’s national team was scheduled to kick off its commitments at the European Waterpolo Championships in Split, Croatia against hosts Croatia It is Malta’s fourth successive participation in the tournament that pits together Europe’s top 16 teams, with national coach Karl Izzo vying for a top 14 finish In the group stage, apart from Croatia, Malta will face Greece (August 31) and France (September 2) There’s little hope of Malta picking up points in the group stage but they will serve as a build up for the play off tie against either Israel or Slovenia from the other group That match, for 13th or 14th place, would be played on September 4, and if success ful, it would be the highest position ever achieved by Malta in these championships

Last season’s runners up, Floriana opened their campaign with an easy 2 0 win over Pieta, but then were made to sweat by Sirens who gave them a fright They shared the spoils after coming back from two goals down to earn a point in a 2 2 draw against a Sirens side that was re duced to ten men Sirens had built a two goal advantage by the half hour and then suffered their goals after having a player sent off in the 69th minute

Hamrun Spartans ended their historic run in the UEFA Conference League commitments with a 3 3 return draw in front of their fans at the National Stadium, but with a 4 7 aggregate defeat against Ser bian giants Partizan Belgrade who beat them 1 4 in the first leg.

The Spartans faced an uphill battle as they needed to make up for the three goal deficit, and their hopes were further thrashed when despite their fine first half performance, and against the run of play they fell further behind after 28 minutes, but levelled six minutes later Hamrun suffered two more setbacks by conceding two more quick goals (72nd and 78th) in the second half which they also dominated before they staged a strong comeback and likewise scored two quick goals, both from penalties (82nd and 90th) to level the score after 90 minutes
