As someone who is truly concerned for

my fellow black brothers, I ask this question: Why don’t black men seek professional help in their time of need, especially around issues related to mental health? Shame. Fear. Judgment. These are all topics that came up in conversation when black men decide to check into rehab. For men coming to terms with needing assistance with their mental health is difficult because they feel that others in the black community would see them as weak, because for most black men, the image of being strong outweighs the mental-health struggles they deal with. These feelings are not uncommon for many in the black community. We often struggle with opening up about what good mental health looks like and how to begin conversations

ly doing themselves a real disservice. The idea that black men can maintain their mental health on their own is rooted not only in machismo but also in the idea that by seeking help, you are weak and allowing someone to see all of your dirty laundry. And the last thing we want to do as black people is expose our dirty laundry, right?

As a community, we have to recognize that by not seeking help, we are truly only hurting ourselves. We should not be ashamed to talk about mental health because our community as a whole is dealing with some of the most difficult issues. We as black men have led difficult lives. We as black people have led difficult lives.

To say that we don’t need help navigating our struggles is a disservice not only to the community but also to the struggles we face as black men.

It's a honor to be featured in any magazine but it's a amazing accomplishment to be featured in a black magazine.

The impact of COVID-19 is devastating to mostly all business, Trina Hopkins and I started our business Hair & Body Oct 2019, where We focused on Health, Beauty and Fitness. Since the Coronavirus our sales has plummeted tremendously, we lost over half our clients and rent was still due on the 1st of each month. We decided to reinvent and take step classes outside with social distancing and online workouts. I also started delivering smoothies to customers and added another hair stylist to help boost our business. We are trying to stay above water until gym restrictions are lifted and/or when our lease ends.

What Healthy Black Love Looks Like If we are being real, we know way too many people–that is, if we are not one of them–who are in unhealthy relationships. They stay in the name of love but are miserable and life is way too short to be unhappy. Many people have this misconception that real love is not only earned, but in the most ridiculously painful of ways. It is as if the more someone puts you through hell, the stronger your bond. That isn’t love; it’s dysfunction. Many of us need to be reminded of what healthy Black love looks like. It isn’t someone putting you through hell. It isn’t someone who is making you pay for the sins of another by forcing you to break down their walls of pain built by fear. Healthy love isn’t a back-and-forth type of struggle for power or a tie to the dysfunction disguised as “chemistry” and/or a “connection.” On the contrary, healthy love is given freely and willingly to the one who deserves it. Everyone may deserve love, but that doesn’t mean they deserve your love. In order to get to a place of loving someone willingly and unrestricted, you must develop a relationship with your self. It is what you should trust (next to the Creator) to guide you. Now back to what healthy love looks like. 1. Healthy Black love is trusting. When you are engaged in a relationship that is healthy, you are so in tuned with your self that you know who you are and whom to trust. Trust is healthy in a rela-

tionship, and it brings the two of you closer. 2. Healthy Black love is compassionate. When you truly love someone, you seek to understand your mate. Instead of arguing or setting out to prove a point, you prioritize understanding your partner’s point of view in an effort to come to a solution. 3. Healthy Black love is genuine. When you really care for someone, you do not become obsessed with keeping tabs. You genuinely want to see your mate win in life, and there is no unhealthy competition. Healthy Black love is simply real … and it’s pure with no motives that are motivated by self-gain. Even the best marriages have their own special challenges, inadequate communication, silent treatment and financial troubles are some of the most common issues couples face. This year has intensified the normal issues and has some marriages questioning their future. The COVID-19 virus has created uncommon fears and health concerns while social unrest and racial tension have caused a rethinking of how we view our world. As a result, there has been a marked uptick in couples seeking counseling. But difficult times don’t have to automatically translate into difficult marriages and being quarantined together for long periods of time does not have to be a marriage death sentence.

Pre-COVID, people getting out of the house during a regular workweek served as a respite from each other. It gave couples a chance to experience much needed alone time. Quarantine, however, removes that option, so couples are now faced with continually seeing each other. This can truly test what your relationship is made of. Here are two suggestions to help you through the struggle.

Talk to Each Other More Ironically, some couples find that they have nothing to talk about now that they are stuck in the house. It’s similar to the empty nest syndrome, where the kids, who served as a distraction and provided subject matter for the couple, are suddenly gone and the couple now has to talk to each other. This is where spouses have to force themselves to break the silence. Even if you feel there is nothing to talk about, talk about why there is nothing to talk about. It may be because you have not probed deep into each other’s emotions. This is the time to do so. Dig deeper, and as painful as it may be, force yourself to talk about emotions and feelings. 

Don’t Just Talk About the Problems While quarantined, the issues we would normally ignore can become grossly exaggerated. You will start to notice things you have never noticed before or second-guess each other’s intentions. This is a result of proximity overload. So the natural thing is to complain about what bothers you. While I do not advocate stuffing problems and not talking, minor issues can be handled on your own without discussion, especially during quarantine. You may

need to take a few hours to be in separate rooms. While isolated, collect your thoughts and stop listening to the negative voices in your head. After you’ve re -energized, emerge with a fresh perspective and talk about the things you like about your spouse. Remember, the only real problem in your marriage is the one you choose to fight over and not resolve. Discuss with solutions in mind. If you are just trying to win or make a point, there will never be resolution. Your mate needs to know your heart, not just your point of view. In a day and age where positive portrayals of African-Americans are a must-have, depictions of Black love and family are a given. We know that there’s much more to see than what mainstream society presents regarding our culture, and it’s time we proudly showcase how we get down!

Why Black Men Don’t Commit? The disconnect between men and women has and will always be, “what does sex really mean?” Certain women think that any man who deems her worth having sex with and feeding, also deems her worthy of a relationship. Some girls say this aloud; some keep it to themselves and assume a man is smart enough to know what she expects. Either way, it’s a game that women usually lose. Women are being blown out by men in terms of this relationship battle. The reason being is that by the time a woman has “the talk” about what they are going to be, that man has already gotten the pot of gold. Even if he likes her, he’s not going to be pressured into being with her. Her conversation and friendship isn’t priceless, so he walks away with his head high because he got the only thing he saw as valuable—Your body. In the

end, all the woman gets is a lesson in, maybe your naïve behind should have gotten what you wanted first like a normal person.

be exclusive without a title with a girl they’re in love with just because it’s the safe route. All men are afraid of The Switch.

The solution is to stop being obsessed with what a man wants, stop overthinking your every action, and stop being so hard up that you come off as some weird, giggling, submissive little girl who strips down her personality in order to impress a man.

Fear Of Giving An Inch

Don’t Be Scared Homie Fellas, consider this a closed room meeting where the girls aren’t listening and let’s be real with each other. Commitment is scary, I don’t care how tough you are, putting your feelings in the hands of a girl and trusting her to not screw you over, causes paranoia. Real men make decisions; they don’t keep smashing and agree to

You give a girl an inch; she’ll take a mile– start picking out wedding colors and start writing her first name with your last name, regular and hyphenated. She won’t tell you this, but it’ll slip out in the little things she says and does. Your future is now her future, and while you want her as a girlfriend, you aren’t even thinking about marriage. The older you get, the more women consider you, “the one.” That’s how females are wired. Agreeing to be monogamous aka “giving up the title” is showing her that you don’t want to date other girls, you like her, and want to see how far it can go once committed.

Men see those girls on social media writing about, “my bae is so good to me… my bae a trip… waiting for my bae to get off work,” and shake their head at that corniness. There is no way you want to be the “bae” to some lovesick girl who feels a need give strangers play by play on your relationship. We men are built different, we don’t need that kind of attention, nor do we covet it, but some girls take pride in having someone and have to inform the world. You’re afraid that the moment you make it official, she’s going to blast it off as a status update and expect you to do the same. You can’t explain to a girl that it makes you uncomfortable; she doesn’t see the problem, so she expects you to act the same way.

Now that it’s your turn to make it official, that “what if” runs through your head. Men don’t like to talk about this because to even imagine that it’s a possibility makes you seem unsure in your ability to keep your woman satisfied, yet it’s a key reason why dudes would rather keep a girl as just a “friend” than wife them.

My name is Ra'shad King (preferred name), I'm from Little Rock Arkansas, born and raised. My entire life I've always been the boy that was driven to be something moreI have my MBA, Masters in human resource management, and several certifications. My accomplishments that I have today, they did not come easy, because I was challenged with several roadblocks from being taught not to believe in myself to not knowing who I really am. Eventually, once I discovered my passion and drive for spiritu-

ality and religion things in my life completely started to change. For example, in high school I was starting to learn that I had a voice and the message I had was important for some people. Therefore I created a mentoring program that helps elementary kids with common problems they will have to faced in junior high/high school. From there I completed four years in the military and gained a ton of experience an new aspects about religion and spirituality By being around so many different people from different cultures, upbringings, and walks of life. The Navy expanded my reach and nuances. When I get out the Navy I became a foster parent, and over the years I have fostered 16 boys and now I'm going through the process of adopting a nine year old boy. I say all of that to say this, I've learned that my purpose is to give hope, encouragement, empowerment, inspiration, motivation, and equipped my brother is with the tools that they need for growth. I’m so happy that as I’m choosing to step out on my path that is bringing so many great opportunities such as being featured in this magazine.

I am all about strengthening the body and getting fit on all three planes which is the Body, Soul, and Spirit. I believe that in order for us to feel whole and complete we need to work on all three planes. So not only do I perform exercise such as weight lifting but I also do activities such as meditation, reflection, mirror work, affirmations, and other tools that help strengthen the Soul and Spirit. I encourage people to understand that we are more than just our physical bodies, that we are much deeper and complex than what we realize. And in my opinion, the best way to achieve wholeness is by working out your entire being. My next project is to write a book and I'm hoping that it will be successful as well. The book is going to focus on how we can strengthen and workout The Body, Soul, and Spirit. It means a lot to me that I was asked to be in this magazine because of all the positive energy I try my hardest to put out in the universe for people to grab a hold to as a tool to use to change their lives Lastly, I have a YouTube channel by the name of P.S. Fitness. P.S. Fitness standards for physical and spiritual Fitness.
