AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN AND DIABETES Diabetes affects 2.7 million African Americans. Studies show that minorities are more likely to develop complications from diabetes. African Americans tend to eat foods that are high in carbohydrates, sugars and starches. They also eat less fruits and vegetables, and more fried foods than other demographic groups. TYPE 1 & 2 Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) accounts for 5% of people, it is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. In Type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin which is needed to convert starches, sugar and other foods for daily energy. Type 2 diabetes (insulin r esistance) is th e m ost com m on form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly and makes extra insulin to compensate. Eventually, your body cannot make enough insulin to maintain blood glucose at normal levels. Higher than normal blood glucose levels are called hyperglycemia. COMPLICATIONS When African American men have diabetes they are more likely to develop more serious complications including cardiovascular disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease, nerve damage, fungal infections, bacterial infections, dry skin, gangrene, erectile dysfunction and amputation. African American men are 1.5 to 2.5 times more likely to experience amputated limbs than other race. SEXUAL HEALTH Men with poorly controlled diabetes are more likely to have sexual issues. One of the biggest causes for these sexual issues is erectile dysfunction. More than 50 percent of men who have diabetes for more than 10 years have erectile dysfunction. Other concerns are low levels of testosterone, decreased libido, depression and premature ejaculation.

What Do You Know About Prostate Cancer? By FaLessia Booker Most people know the significance of a red ribbon - AIDS awareness; Pink Ribbon Breast cancer. How about a sky blue ribbon, drawing a blank? Most people do. Sky blue signifies Prostate Cancer Awareness. While not as wellknown as AIDS or Breast cancer, it can be just as deadly. The prostate is a gland just below the bladder and is the size of a walnut. Its primary purpose is to produce seminal fluid. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, after skin cancer. Risk factors include family history and age. African American men are also more likely to develop prostate cancer than other races. Prostate cancer is usually, though not always, slowgrowing. In its initial stages, prostate cancer can have few, if any symptoms. Most early symptoms

nvolve urination problems: frequent urination, especially at night; weak urine stream; pain or burning during urination (or ejaculation); or difficultly starting or stopping the urine stream. Prostate cancer can usually be detected early by conducting a blood test called the PSA, which stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen and is a protein made by the prostate gland. Another way to find prostate cancer is the digital rectal exam, which most men find distasteful. Though neither of these tests is a foolproof method of detecting cancer, and indeed may even show false positive results, testing is still recommended to men over the age of 50. Earlier screening may be recommended if there is a family history of prostate cancer in the patient’s father or brothers. As men age, their risk for developing prostate cancer will rise, with 66% of prostate cancer diagnoses occurring after age 65. Prostate cancer is complicated, and diagnosis isn’t always easy. Men should talk with their doctor to determine if the risks of screening outweigh the benefits.

I am divorced with two children, a 7-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy. The primary life-event that guided me into my career was the passing of my father at the age of 42, and having children who I wanted to be around for when I got older. It is my goal to change this in my family and improve the lives of others in the process. My Passion is improving the lives of others physically, and through charity.

W. Thomas Anderson

My hobbies are creating and printing positive and uplifting t-shirt designs. I love anything active, paintball, bowling, and a little running. I also enjoy creating healthy meals for people to try.

My food likes are gluten free pizza and authentic Mexican food, which are treats, of course. My food dislikes are anything raw, calamari, oysters Rockefeller - crossed that off my bucket list last year! I seek a God-fearing, independent woman with her own goals and aspirations. One who is respectful and even-tempered, seeing potential in me and not just what I’ve become so far. Also, an active supporter of my visions, with good communication skills and no guess-work regarding her wants and needs to be happy in life and love. I love all genres of music from rap to classical, and have the weirdest playlist which includes Bing Crosby, The Who, Chris Brown, Miki Howard, and Def Leppard. I predominantly listen to R&B and Rap but I appreciate all music. Divorce was the absolute worse thing that has ever happened to me, and nearly destroyed me. To know what’s about to happen but be powerless to stop it can take a toll on you mentally. Knowing that mistakes you made can never be fixed and will have a permanent, irreversible impact on your life; that you will be watching your children grow up from a distance just as your father did - while you tried not to repeat his mistakes but made your own in the process. Being the Ultimate Black Man means being triumphant over life and circumstance. The deck has been stacked against us for decades. I think it takes a lot of blessings and sheer determination to not give up on making a respectable name for yourself in this world. Being the Ultimate Black Man means to not settle for average existence, but to continually strive towards perfection. The Ultimate Black Man makes everything and everyone he touches better. He’s a leader and not a crowd follower despite influence from near and far; and represents the best of what we have to offer this world……strength, intelligence, leadership, and ever changing with the times. I give back to the community through a couple different avenues. I’m a certified personal trainer, and have been training low income clients for free for the past 3 years - currently have 4 clients, and also offer deep discounts in low income areas. In addition, I buy groceries for low income families. I currently do not support a specific Non-Profit, but all of my funds go directly to the people in need in my community. I would encourage young men to know that you have the potential to be far greater than any of your forefathers and can learn from our past experiences and lessons, as there is no need to repeat our mistakes. Take this insight and apply it to your life and the decisions you make. There are three words in life you never want to say….would’ve, could’ve, should’ve. Ask yourself every day, “What did I do to improve my life and the lives of the people around me? What strides did I make towards my goals? How can I improve on what I did yesterday?”

I would encourage young men to know that you have the poMy favorite form of entertainment is going to the movies. I enjoy the whole experience of viewing a movie at the movies, popcorn and company. I have to mention a date went on. It was a first-date on New Year’s Eve. I picked her up around 8pm with flowers. We went to dinner and talked for a while. It was actually a place that sold wings, nothing extravagant. After dinner we went to a movie. It was a movie that she had actually seen already but she still reacted to the action as if it was her first time. When the movie was finished we went to an Asian spa around midnight. We brought in the New Year in the lobby while we waited to be checked in. This was new for me. Once you paid the entrance fee you could stay there for 24hrs. They had all kinds of saunas with different healing properties to sit, relax, and meditate in. Most of them we sat in for about 30 minutes but the hottest one I think we lasted for no more than 12minutes! There were all types of people there, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, couples, families etc. It was a wonderful experience. Around 2AM we went to sleep. All the cots and recliners were taken so I turned two chairs to face each other. I sat in one and she sat in the other, resting her legs across my lap. We slept facing each other for 4 hrs. We woke up around 6, sat in a couple more saunas and then showered and went to breakfast at a gourmet breakfast restaurant which had the most amazing dishes. To this day that was the best breakfast I’ve ever had! After breakfast I took her home, we said goodbye and hugged. This was the longest and most enjoyable date I have ever been on. It lasted for almost 14hrs. My advice to single ladies is that you don’t have to conform to what society thinks you should be, but rather be secure in who you are. It is ok to be independent but know when to give up that ‘in’ dependence when you find the right one. Two should depend on each other in a relationship. Measure a man by his actions, and not his words. Love is a verb. Media and entertainment have portrayed the black man as a socially and politically out of touch, irresponsible individual with only two things on his mind, sex and money. When I refer to media I include social media as well. I see what’s posted on a daily basis and most of it is trash. Every now and then a positive post of the black man will come across but for the most part it is fighting video, which I have personally boycotted, ‘what a real man should be’ posts, and someone’s pissed-off girlfriend cursing about her man messing with someone beneath her (very unsexy). As far as mainstream media and entertainers, rap is what’s in. The content of the music is self-explanatory of the image that’s projected of the black man.

Marty met his wife Joya in high school and have been married for 26 years. They have two nose pickers. one daughter 23 and one son 19. Being spontaneous and unpredictable is what keeps their marriage alive. One can become bored or boring if a routine is established. They like doing crazy things at crazy times and the sex ain’t half bad either! Hey, you asked! I really can’t give advice on marriage because all situations are different. I will say to keep nosybodies out of your relationship. It’s always the nosy ones and the single ones who are trying to give advice when they can’t seem to get married or stay married. I’m a bit unique in that I have had several predestined careers. I was a professional basketball player, Director of Athletics and entrepreneur owning a pest control company, real estate holdings, car wash, sports shop and restaurant. It would seem that every endeavor transitioned into another endeavor. I still do not quite know where I am going to fit in just yet. It appears that my life will be that of a chef and restaurant owner, but it has yet to be written in stone. I am very passionate about cooking, writing, child abuse, domestic abuse and mental health. They all seem to garner most of my attention. When I am involved in those passions, it isn’t a chore - it’s a love affair. My hobbies are writing, cooking and art. Through those hobbies I am transported to another dimen sion and become someone else. My writing al

ows me to become the very folk I write about. I am very adept at using my imagination, and never seem to run out of ideas. My cooking allows me to invite others into my world. Food is the one item that will always be a common denominator, as it allows others to glimpse into your mind. My art is my heart, I love to draw, and also am a collector. I don’t collect to hide my pieces, but collect to show them to those who may never get a chance to see such beautiful artifact. Food likes and dislikes? Really? I am a bona fide food whore! There is no such thing as dislikes regarding food in my life. I like it all! Southern, Italian, French, Japanese, African - you name it and I probably like it. Now, I may not eat everything, but I have not found too much that I don’t like! Being married - and I know that you said skip, but it’s important - what I sought in a woman was a person that could balance my life. Even at the young age of 17, I knew that my wife - who was my girlfriend, could do that. So much so that I placed a note in my bible and said that I was going to marry her! I still have the note to prove it! She didn’t believe me either until I found my old bible, opened it up and viola, the note was still there! I’m strange about music. When I am cooking or drawing I prefer to listen to classical music and opera; when I am driving on the expressway I prefer to listen to hard core rap; when t I am relaxing or just driving around the city I prefer to listen to slow R and B. Yeah, my kids are pretty much the same!

see a difference being made as opposed to looking at numbers to quantify whether or not a difference is being made. Don’t get me wrong. I’m all about quantifying the ends, but keeping it real…if you can’t see it is it really working?

Several things will fit into this answer. The worst thing was losing my mom and dad and also losing everything that I owned. Of course losing mom and dad ranks much higher, but when you lose your livelihood, that ranks pretty high as well. Being the ultimate man embodies strength, passion, forward thinking, family, spirituality and community. I feel that I am that type of person, but am humbled by the magazine nominating me as that person. I like to believe that I am a renaissance type of man which, in my opinion, is what the Ultimate Man embodies. While I am not a public community activist, I pride myself in quietly getting involved in worthwhile community endeavors. Having a restaurant in a community other than my own was not an option for me. Being involved in athletics in another district was not an option for me. Opening my many businesses in other communities was also not an option nor was it appealing. Being involved with the Whaley Center and Big Brothers/Big Sisters was appealing to me. As a matter of fact, my unof ficial little brother now works at the restaurant. It’s all about giving back. Im huge on doing things for the Whaley Center and Big Brothers. Although I haven’t been very active in either for a few years because of personal injuries, I prefer to deal with organizations where I can

Always remember, you inspire so others can aspire. Be an inspiration to other young men as a way to help them aspire to be what you have become. I like to train my cooks because I believe that I am a stepping stone for them. I expect them to surpass ALL that I have done in cooking and that includes writing cook books, creating a brand, creating spices and restaurant ownership. This is what Ultimate Men have done for me over the years. My favorite form of entertainment is dinner, of course! I have never entertained a dinner party in which my guest walked away without being amazed. Well, one time but that’s another story! I simply believe that as a self-taught chef I am supposed to always have a wow factor when presenting even the simplest type of food. In my world, there is no such thing as simple.

The media/entertainment industry can make a black man look like a deranged serial rapist or make him look like the next president. When you have unethical folks or very rightwinged folks controlling the media, that’s where the problems can arise. Entertainers forget that they are always news-worthy, and need to recognize that no matter how secretive and incognito they try to be, the media is looking for them to be secretive and incognito as well. When you have the media looking to break you down or build you up, they are going to look as deep and hard as they need to. Build a rapport with the media, first and foremost. Once trust is established, they can help build a career. Black men in particular, need to recognize that the media can be an asset, but they can also be a nightmare. My preference is and will always be to include the media as opposed to alienate them from my life. I also feel that if I share my life, what can the media write that is negative that I haven’t already put out there?

Because my life is so hectic, a perfect date to me is a simple steak dinner and maybe a chance to feed the ducks on the river. I’m really a simple guy who often can’t sit back to smell the roses. Before I know it, it has snowed and I missed the roses! I’m trying to change that, but overall I enjoy the simple things in life. To single women I would say that a man doesn’t make you, but rather is supposed to complete you. If he can’t make you feel whole and complete you as a woman, keep moving. Ain’t nobody got time for that! If he disrespects you or puts his hands on you, keep stepping! Chile, please! And if he can’t take you home to meet his family and his closest friends, umm… yea, keep moving! Treat yourself like gold. You don’t give your gold to just anybody. Just remember that once you give away the gold, you can’t get it back! He better be worthy and worth it!

1ST SAMUEL 1st Samuel (born Samuel V. Berry) is a Christian rap artist from Flint, Michigan, who has shared the stage with gospel stars: Karen Clark Sheard, Kurt Carr, Smokie Norful, Marvin Winans Jr., Ramiyah, Jessica Reedy, Lisa Paige Brooks, 21:03, and many others. Having released two hit singles, and two EPs I’ve Been Changed and Represent, he is currently working on his first full length Christian album titled “Been There, Done That” scheduled to be released in the spring of 2015.

With the support and recognition of his local community and gospel celebrity friends, 1st Samuel continues to reach beyond his verses, touching many hearts with his personal testimony that is conveyed through his life, his story, and his song.

Born a Flint native, Samuel actually lived the street life most rappers front about. He caught the attention of a member of Fo’ Deep while playfully rapping about biscuits during his work shift at Hardees. Impressed by his R. Kelly and Luke style, the group invited Samuel to shadow them in the studio and on the road, where he began to rap about sex, partying and his street life. Per conversation with the now well-known, Lil’ Jon, Samuel was advised to start using his own name, thus 1st Samuel being born. It wasn’t until 1997, after being well-received for performing a Black history song in church, which 1st Samuel decided to switch to a more positive message. His ministry grew with his relationship with God. As host of gospel TV show, “Purity Zone” and radio shows, “Elevations”, “Let’s Straighten It Out with T. A.G (Teens Anointed by God), and the “Afternoon Drive Time” on 1420AM-WFLT, 1st Samuel has touched the local community with an uplifting and relevant message. His high ratings ushered WFLT to the Stellar Awards twice with nominations for “Radio Station of the Year”. He even united men of Flint through a Men’s Unity Conference in 2007 with guest preachers, Apostle Jerome Bouverette, Apostle Lawrence Moore, and Bishop William Murphy, Jr.

Although he doesn't have a University degree, he is still considered as a scholar due to his tireless and in-depth research and study in the areas of Ancient African History, Modern History,

Craig Derrice Samuels July 12, 1966 Craig was born and raised in Flint, Michigan and attended the Flint Community Schools. It was during his elementary school years that he was introduced to the NAACP, It's history, and Black History in general by his mother who is a forty-seven year member of the historical organization. As Craig grew so did his zeal to enhance and advance his knowledge about himself, his people, and the ancient culture from which we derived. Craig had brief stints in college, attending both the Detroit College of Business and Baker College-Flint as a Marketing Management major. But Craig's real passion was being a voice for the voiceless and an advocate for the oppressed so in 2004 he joined Carpenter Road Apostolic Church. A naturally gifted speaker and writer, he became a very effective minister with a heart for outreach. But it wasn't until 2006 when he and his lovely wife joined Halal Praise Ministries that Craig began to step into his purpose of social activism.

Theology, Psychology, Philosophy, and Politics, and is affectionately called "Dr. Samuels" by those who know him. His self-taught education has made him an effective and minded intellectual with aspirations to travel, teach, learn, and help to build and rebuild black people and ultimately the black community. Not to mention the continuation of book writing. In 2015, Craig met a local activist who enlisted his services as the Director of the Mentoring Program for the newly formed non-profit organization M.A.D.E. INSTITUTE. Today Craig is operating in a position that affords him the opportunities to walk amongst the people and administer the often lacking human touch that some of our residents so desperately need. Lastly, but certainly not least of all, Craig is happily married to Renee Samuels. The two are High School sweethearts and have been together for 32 years! They have one child; a thirty year old daughter and four grandsons. Together they are a family oriented driving force that wants to see change for the better in families and communities the world over.

In 2009 Craig moved to Columbus, Ohio to broaden his horizons and returned to Flint in 2011 more polished and ready to tackle the societal moors that plagued our city, but soon grew weary of the slow progress. So in 2012 he left again heading to Atlanta with goals to build in a much bigger city but found himself right back in Flint a short time later. In 2013 he teamed up with a local pastor who was heavily involved in community affairs and began to assist with food & water give-away to families in need. In that same year year Craig joined the Men of 2Morrow organization who mission was to develop young males between the age of seven and eighteen to become productive citizens in their communities. During and between the times of social involvement, Craig took the advice of his mentor and wrote his personal memoir. The Book has been

I am a divorced father of one, aged 25. I worked for Detroit Chassis (Ford Motor Company) for 13 years, and due to downsizing had to reevent myself. I’ve always had a passion for helping people, and that is what led me to where I am today, working for a nonprofit organization, and recently elected to the Beecher School board. The worst thing that has happened in my life is losing my mentor and best friend, my Dad. My Hobbies are golf, sporting events and traveling, steak and sea food.

In a woman, I’m

seeking someone who is crazy, sexy, cool, but the ideal woman for me is confident, intelligent, spontaneous, sensual, honest, independent, and supportive.

Our young men need to “stop being self-destructive and start being self productive.” (Tupac Shakur) Also, “if you

My favorite music is R & B, some Rap and Jazz.

can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.)

Being the ultimate man signifies understanding that greater happiness lies in helping others, not helping himself. I give back to the community by mentoring men in the community aged 18-24 years old, and I’m also actively supportive of Flint Strive, Big Brothers, and Big Sisters.

love find you, and when it does let the man love your mind first and not your body. Media and entertainers play a huge role in our society because reality for lot of young men in our communities is the sum of what they listen to and/ or watch, and they must be educated on the truth of the images they see and hear.

My favorite form of Entertainment is outdoor concerts, Portrait, and Jazz shows and my ideal date is a quiet dinner and great conversation. My advice for single ladies is don’t look for - rather let

Anthony Dirrell (born October 14, 1984) is an American boxer from Flint, Michigan. He competes in the super middleweight division, where he is the former WBC Super Middleweight Champion. Personal Dirrell is the younger brother of Olympic Bronze medalist and fellow pro boxer Andre Dirrell. Anthony is viewed by many as being the more aggressive of the two in the ring (as well as having more knock-out power) though it is widely believed that his brother is the more naturally gifted boxer.[1] Professional record Anthony Dirrell made his pro debut on January 27, 2005 against Henry Dukes. Dirrell stopped him in the first round. Dirrell had his next fight on February 11, 2005 against Dewayne Warren. Dirrell knocked Warren down twice in round one and twice again in round two. Dirrell won by TKO. Dirrell had his third fight against Larry Brothers in which Dirrell won by TKO in the second round. Dirrell had his seventh fight against Chris Grays in which Dirrell won by TKO in the first round. Dirrell had his eighth fight against Juan Carlos Ramos in which Dirrell won by TKO in the first round. Dirrell had his

ninth fight against “Jammin” James Morrow on June 23, 2006 in which Dirrell won by TKO in the first round. Dirrell won this fight in impressive fashion as he first knocked down Morrow with a huge right hand to the head, then followed up with a flurry in which Dirrell hit Morrow with a perfect left hook to the body which blew Morrow’s mouthpiece out. Dirrell’s tenth fight was against Billy Thompson in which he won by unanimous decision in 6 rounds.
