Ask Rebecca Holistic and Natural Healthcare and Lifestyle Education Dear Rebecca, I work out regularly, but I know I need to make changes to my nutrition and lifestyle. I try to eat to build muscle, but I’m almost 40 and sometimes stress and digestion issues creep in. I’m not a professional athlete, but I do like to play a little ball and workout. I just really need to stay fit and live long and healthy, but I’m really not sure where to begin. Can you make some recommendations? - David S. Dear David, this is a great question during a season when so many people are trying to get fit. Oftentimes I find that people are relying on outdated information regarding nutrition and lifestyle, so let’s break it down to 4 key elements that are important for anyone, but especially athletes.
1. Hydration: It cannot be said enough; we are made of almost 80% water and must replenish and restore that everyday. And water with flavorings, food coloring, preservatives and chemicals don’t count! Please choose water. The body has a specific game plan that it engages with water to flush out toxins and keep cells vibrant. Ideally, drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water daily for proper hydration (i.e. a 200 lb. person drinks 100 oz. water daily). PRO TIP: Put a pinch of Pink Himalayan Salt under your tongue or right into the water and drink. This improves absorption, digestion, and full system hydration).
2. Rest: Do not underestimate the power of stopping and intentionally allowing your body and mind to have a break. The Indy 500 isn’t won without a few pit stops. Letting your body rest allows systems to rejuvenate and restore, boosting immune systems, and improving energy, metabolism, and mental clarity. That makes for better quality life by reducing stress and creating a healthy lifestyle overall. 3. Fresh Whole Foods: Guess what? Human blood (hemoglobin) and plant blood (chlorophyll) are one DNA factor apart. Amazing, right? This means the more you can consume fresh fruits and vegetables, the more vibrant your cells are. Alive foods create alive cells. Dead foods create dead cells. The higher the quality of life in your food, the more positive the impact on your health. 4. Proteins: Yes, they are absolutely important. But the source of the protein is the most important factor. Many times animal proteins are contaminated in the farming process with hormones, antibiotics, steroids, and GMO feed - all of which create unhealthy, hormonal, synthetic animals, which create unhealthy, hormonal, synthetic people - - who eventually require synthetic medicine. None of this is how it’s meant to go. Rely on wild caught fish, organic turkey and lean beef, as needed. But remember that brown rice and beans, as well as dark greens, such as kale, broccoli, and other lettuces are rich in proteins, as well as a great source of fiber. Interview with Kelly Oubre, Sr. Renetta J. Cochran – Chief Editor TheUbmm: What a does being single father mean for you? Mr. Oubre: Single father, It’s like looking in a mirror and seeing what’s in front of me without giving it a title or definition. Yes I happen to be a father, yes I happen to be single and honestly it’s always seemed strange to find a comfort zone while marrying the two terms. To have had a spouse who also believed in my vision would have been great, but that just wasn’t the case. Taking pride in leading by example was always my intention since 12/09/1995 the date of my son’s birth. Just because he and I were in this circumstance together never meant that we had to be victims of it. I never wasted time placing blame, because I was too busy strategizing and planning for my son’s future. I’m not single because of a catastrophic event I’m single because deviations in my plans for success were not going to be interrupted by anyone or anything. Being married a few times taught me that biological connections between parents and children are strong whereas non-biological connections can many times just be convenient. I am comfortable with my status because I’m happy and I have the freedom to move as I please. With this inner happiness I’m able to support my son and his fiancé as they explore their love and happiness also.
TheUbmm: In the upbringing of your son give me a little bit of what you had to go through to get your son and yourself to the success that you have now. Mr. Oubre: Upbringing of my son, Upon his birth my focus became more crystalized and words like failure and trying gave way to more important words like doing and dominating. Having obtained legal custody meant that I was in a position to impose my blueprint to ensure his success in life. There was no nasty court battle, but instead an imposition of my will at a time when the word no meant nothing to me. Those who thought that I was crazy back then have probably spent pointless hours of their recent lives distancing themselves from that poorly thought out position. Holding firm to developing a complete individual gave me the motivation to be active in his life and to research historical principles that various civilizations incorporated into the development of their young men. Agoge training principles played a huge part in me supporting and motivating my son to earn his black belt in TaeKwanDo. This rigorous training was instrumental in laying the foundation for his current success, because it not only helped him with confidence, but it also helped him with perseverance. I’ve willingly made sacrifices and reinvented myself in an effort to facilitate positive growth for the both of us. Through it all I’m still Dad, because through it all Dad is who I’ve always wanted to be.
The Ubmm: What is Beast DevelopMental? Mr. Oubre: Beast DevelopMental is a concept that came to be roughly 20+ years ago when my son was an infant. The concept is rooted in a play on words that derived from the definition of the word personification. Personification is defined as giving human like characteristics to animals, but my term Beast DevelopMental was developed with the intent of giving animalistic qualities and descriptions to humans. I’m a nature buff and throughout life I’ve always noticed how man has gravitated towards mimicking animals to assist with inventions, camouflage and descriptions. Within my concept the term Beast DevelopMental (see logo) hovering above acts as a drone if you will overseeing a Diamond representing the Athlete encased within three very thick protective walls. To the right of the Diamond is the term Trusted Advisor representing a Person or clarifier (preferably with a biological connection) who will forever remain non-compromised. Directly under the Diamond is the word Peers which represents the young Diamond’s friends, rivals, co-workers and teammates. Within our Beast DevelopMental blueprint these peers act as motivators that the Diamonds must always work to stay one step better than with a three dimensional well planned out approach. To the left of the Diamond in the middle of the logo are the words Governing Body which represents those who develop and implement the rules and or laws that all young Diamonds, Trusted Advisors and Peers must respectfully adhere too.
