Lifestyle as a “Way of Life” by Katy Leakey
When I was a little girl I had big dreams - but living in a tent deep in the African bush, with no running water, and taking bucket showers wasn’t one of them. Never, even in my wildest dreams, did I imagine that I would be living surrounded by wildlife, basically isolated from the world, and living among the pastoral Maasai. For years, I had lived in California, making my living as an artist. Married. Then divorced. It wasn’t until 2001, when I fell in love with and married Philip Leakey that I took the leap and moved from my continent to his continent, that my passion came fully alive and I finally began living the lifestyle I was meant to live. It took adversity - the likes that only Mother Nature can create - to shape my destiny. When I moved to Kenya, a terrible drought gripped East Africa. Philip and I soon found ourselves supporting over 100 families, women and children fending on their own, as the men drove their cattle far and wide in search of grazing. As the need outgrew our capacity, we came up with the idea to provide work opportunities for the women so they could help themselves. We needed a product that was easy to make in the bush yet would appeal to a global market if we were to really make a difference. So we designed a contemporary stylish single strand of jewelry, made from grass and glass beads strung on elastic, that could be worn as a bracelet, necklace or anything else a creative woman could fashion. We named it Zulugrass. In the beginning the rural men railed against their wives working for money, but over time they came to see the benefits created by their wives’ income for the community. “Being an orphan, no one was there for me; now I am able to feed my family and help in all ways. No more time for self-pity, only time for working," says Nolari, 32-years-old with five children. Noseuri, 56-years-old with eight children, says, “Women are no longer begging for basic needs and men have now recognized that women can be breadwinners and become valuable contributors to the society.” For Philip and me, the years building our Fair Trade company, The Leakey Collection, have been long and difficult. The challenges of wedding production in the bush with a demanding global market seem
insurmountable at times. Moreover, balancing the needs of local communities with limited resources is a constant concern especially in uncertain economic times. Yet, we continue to forge ahead - expanding our product line from fashion accessories to interior home and skin care. We remain fiercely dedicated to helping the Maasai women advance on all levels. For, you see, I have the privilege to live amongst some of the most elegant, selfconfident, and beautiful spirited women I know - women who live in ten-foot-long oval mud-huts women who have taught me more about lifestyle than anyone ever could. Reaching for Your Mamalode by Elke Govertsen
I continue to surprise myself. At twenty-five, I woke up in a hospital bed barely hanging on. After contracting typhoid during a humanitarian trip, my gallbladder ruptured, spilling infection into my body. An emergency surgery to clean me up left me sliced open from sternum to pubic bone, and left many of my organs encased in scar tissue. At one point in my hospital stay, I let go completely. I saw the white light and Angels and Guides. A nurse in the ICU brought me back, and at that moment I hated her. But the moment passed and I was grateful. She and I are friends to this day. So at age 25, I was sliced open, still sick with typhoid (it hung on for about seven months) and with an alarmingly long list of things I could no longer do. I was told I would not have children. Recovery takes such a long time, and a lot of hard, hard work. I was on borrowed time and grateful, but at 25 I was also barely able to walk, unable to work and fighting myself not to give into anger. A year later I was pregnant. My body was not fully recovered from the infection and the subsequent half a year of antibiotics. But the baby held on and defied probability and we made it. I now have two sons who are amazing and healthy and think mommy’s scar across her entire belly is cool. Then, I took another risk. With $400 and a good pitch, I started a company, Mamalode®, that is a magazine (print, online and tablet), Web site and lifestyle brand for moms. What sets Mamalode apart from other parenting publications is that we never, ever run how-to articles or recipes, but rather fill our pages with first-person authentic voices that create real connections and emotion. The seed for Mamalode began with a party - the Mother’s Day Eve ™ Bash. The first year it was a night out for moms, and by year three it had grown to over 500 women and business sponsors. The following year, we unveiled Mamalode at the party. Mamalode launched as a free local publication supported by advertising, and has now grown to a paid subscriber base in 49 states and six other countries. We have grown through word of mouth and hand to hand. We also do custom publications for companies that want to tell their stories and share them in a beautiful way.

Courage and Croissants, Inspired Joyful Living by Dr. Suzanne Saxe-Roux
Growing up, we were told we could have it all, the American Dream challenging careers, a rewarding marriage, financial success, increasing amounts of leisure time and even children if we wanted. I grew up in the '50s in an easy middle-class upbringing with a close family and lots of friends and seemingly few problems. It never occurred to me that I would have to make choices about my life as an adult. Life was good. I went to college and continued on to graduate school without really thinking about it and found myself being redefined as a “professional career woman.� Soon thereafter, I met my South African husband while we were backpacking through Europe and Israel. After a whirlwind romance he followed me back to San Francisco where I had received a position teaching college. We were young and in love. Being with Jean was my second life-changing event. Not only was he (and still is) my soulmate, he challenged me, pushed me, supported me, and made me grow as he did. Life was full of simple pleasure and bursting with possibilities. We traveled, bought a small condo, traded up to a bigger house, climbed the career ladders, ate at great restaurants, bought a summer place in France, started businesses, and loved life. In 1999, at the age of 45, life took a big turn; my business partner died of cancer and I gave premature birth to a baby girl. Soon thereafter came the downturn of the dot.com, 9/11, and the world as we knew it. It soon became apparent that life was no longer working and that something had to change, something major. In 2005, we sold the business I had built for 15 years, gave up our worldly positions, the SUV, the nanny, the big house and moved to a small village house in the south of France to figure out what life was about and how we could get back the joie de vivre we loved. The story is told in our book, Courage and Croissants, Inspiring Joyful Living, A Story and Life Guidebook. What we learned in taking three years off and living a dream is that it is possible, it takes effort, planning, resilience and focus, but our adventure can never be bought, traded, or disappear. It is the experiences we carry with us that changes us.
Our focus as a family and as individuals is to continue to find ways to create the lifestyle that will nourish us and make us happy. We still have to deal with a growing child, college, retirement, and aging parents, but choosing our lifestyle is also critical. Some days are harder than others, but every day we focus on the simple pleasures we learned in France: enjoying a meal for food and conversation, getting out in nature weekly, taking a day off without schedules, and slowing down. Our life is a continuous journey. We move forward one step at a time to return to both live in France and travel back to California; to do work we enjoy that feeds us, gives us flexibility, and is good for our health; and living every day with joie de vivre. Celebrating the Inner and Outer Beauty of Menopause by Carrie Pierce
I've always been fascinated by makeup and women's grooming rituals. When I was seven, I played for hours with my teenage sister's makeup. When I was 10, I couldn't wait for Halloween, so I could be magically transformed into a gypsy or a witch. When I was 13, I was given a lovely bag of toiletries, the symbol of a young girl's rite of passage. At about that time, my beautiful mother spent a half-hour one day carefully shaping my eyebrows. Her caring gesture made me feel that I could be beautiful, too. Mom had been a professional model and jazz singer, and was a huge influence on my future. I decided right then and there that someday, I would help other women bring out their own inner and outer beauty, just as she had for me. And that's exactly what I've been doing for 26 years. I started my career working in Hollywood and Las Vegas, providing makeup and special effects for feature films, TV commercials, and TV shows. I then went on to professionally style TV news anchors. I soon discovered I longed to make more of a difference, so I studied reconstructive makeup procedures and worked with patients who had been disfigured by burns or scars. This taught me a lot about life - and the importance of self-esteem. From there, I shifted focus to expand my understanding of various holistic therapies for treating skin conditions, and for general skin health. Going back to school, I received my Aesthetics licensing and certification in Color Analysis. I then studied the psychology of beauty, and also key marketing aspects of the cosmetics industry. All this led me to my passion: I now work exclusively with women who are moving through the aging process, women who are peri-menopausal or menopausal, helping them deal with the various beauty changes and challenges that arise during this time of profound transition. I make it a point of addressing, first and foremost, the self-esteem and lifestyle issues affecting their sense of self-worth, while we work on the "outer shell." My core message to my clients is one of positivity surrounding menopause. I emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle, healthy mindset, healthy self-care. My goal is to educate clients so they can make their own informed decisions.
Menopause - rather than being your enemy or a disease process - is what I like to call Life's Ultimate Re-set Button. Enhancing Sexual Vitality by Saida Désilets, Ph.D.
I was conceived by deeply passionate, French Canadian parents on a fur coat in front of a roaring open fireplace on a cold winter night. It is safe to say that I emerged fully awake in my Erotic Innocence and began my career—as a radical pioneer in the field of conscious, integrated sexuality—at the young age of five, when I shamelessly shared a little secret about a pleasurable spot with a small group of girlfriends. In the moment when I was caught, punished, and ostracized, I thought to myself, “Obviously she doesn’t know about this great pleasure or else she wouldn’t be so angry!” I discovered early on that the world did not appreciate fearless, empowered sexuality. Growing up on a few First Nations reservations in the center of Canada, I was also witness to many accounts of domestic violence and blatant sexual abuse of both women and children. My home, a place where my parents shared openness and integrity about sensuality, was often a shelter for these women. Later on, my own erotic innocence was challenged through a violent rape and a subsequent near-death experience. This led me to explore a path abundant with both false teachings as well as profound truths birthed my insatiable curiosity for real and embodied sexual wisdom. The creation of my Jade Goddess program fed my growing hunger to serve and inspire women of all ages and walks of life. It is supremely fulfilling to support women in reconnecting with their own powerful, natural sensuality and erotic intelligence so that they can experience their birthright of sexual health, vitality, limitless pleasure, and gourmet relationship. Another passion of mine is creative collaborations with women who greatly enhance women’s lives. I've contributed to Dr. Christiane Northrup’s books; The Secret Pleasures of Menopause, along with the revised edition of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom as well as Dr. Rachel Abrams’ book: The Multi-Orgasmic Woman. The Power of Dreams for Your Health & Wellness by Carla Blowey
My appreciation for dream work began in 1991 with a precognitive and prophetic dream - a dream in which I was given knowledge about an event in my immediate future - the death of my five-year-old son Kevin, and the spiritual transition that would occur for both of us. Dreaming Kevin became a valuable tool to reexamine my perceptions about death, loss, and the afterlife. With prayer and discernment, I discovered the personal symbols, metaphors, and archetypes that led to forgiveness, healing, spiritual growth, and new life. I also realized that dreaming is a healing tool that transforms your inner and outer health and wellness. Twenty years ago, I began this journey as a bereaved mother who took the road less traveled, but dreaming Kevin has assured me that I’ve never been alone. Kevin is my spiritual coach who inspires and guides me with the assurance that Love remains! Today, as a certified dream work facilitator, I weave the values of spirituality with personal loss and transition for the process and development of psychological and spiritual growth by inviting the dream images to speak their truth, thus creating a space for grace to nourish…and Love to flourish. In ancient times, dreams were recognized as a means for overall health and wellness conveying diagnosis and cures for illness in the body, guidance for life issues, and direct messages from the gods and the deceased on spiritual matters and the future. I Am A Spirited Woman by Nancy Mills
When I was around six, I was gifted an Annie Oakley skirt. I walked around the house (strutted, if truth be told) in my bright red velvet skirt with white fringe, and all sorts of pockets filled with fake guns, shouting, "Bang, bang," to shake things up. Wake things up. Just bring me some type of action! Thus began my career as a Spirited Woman. That inner-Annie has stuck with me my whole life - you might say I channeled her essence or she channeled mine - and together, we decided to ride off into the land of Spirited Womanhood. Well, it didn't exactly happen quite that way. Along the journey, there were many bumps, obstacles, challenges, careers, family issues, fears, self-esteem concerns and on and on. But I always dusted myself off (no matter how long it took) and through my unstoppability (a big Spirited Woman characteristic), I persevered. Plus, I am adventurous and filled with boundless curiosity. Which led to how Spirited Woman really began. Long story short, I had just broken up with my boyfriend, my neighbor heard me crying, knocked on my door and asked, "What would make you happy?" "A trip," I sobbed. "Where?" she asked. I still don't know why I answered, "Montana." I had no friends or family there, had never done a travel story there (I am a former travel journalist and PR maven), nor do I dream of moose. Two days later, that same neighbor said, "My mom is leaving on a driving trip to Montana next week, and one of her friends dropped out. You want to go?" "Sure......" LIttle did I know that the real mission of my life would begin on that fated adventure. I arrived in Montana, stayed at a home next to an Indian burial ground, and went for a long walk with the owner. Near the end of her property was this HUGE rock in the shape of a woman's face. Awestruck, I asked her if she realized that. She said, "We call her Spirit Woman." I turned to her and basically shouted, "That's what I'm going to do for the rest of my life!" On that propitious day in 2000, the seeds of Spirited Woman were planted. I came back to Los Angeles and channeled a manuscript, "Spirited Woman," which became the basis for Spirited Woman's underlying message: YOU ARE ENOUGH AS YOU ARE and EVERY WOMAN is born a Spirited Woman - meant to live through her passion. Her inner-Annie, if you will.
Today, I have greatly expanded Spirited Woman into a global movement for women. I'm known as the founder of TheSpiritedWoman.com - a worldwide women's empowerment community, the Creator of The Spirited Woman Approach to Life, the publisher of the popular International Spirited Woman Blogger Team, and the host of the "Spirited Woman Visionary" series. I now speak on women's empowerment issues. My belief is that EVERY WOMAN is a VISIONARY, changing the world one Spirited Woman step at a time. Tree Spirited Women Unite! Each of us has a Different Life Journey - It’s Time to Share Our Stories by Colleen Baldrica
In this lifetime, I have lived many lives, I’m not who I was even a year ago. In my early twenties I would never have believed I would have accomplished all I have. When I was in my twenties, divorced, supporting two small children, I started my first year of college. Charlie and I first met in the school lounge. He was an older student, older than me. He had graying hair, which he wore in a long braid, his laugh lines were predominant and his eyes a steel gray. Charlie was a Lakota Medicine Man. Struggling with faith, I went to the woods near the college to pray. I stopped by a large oak tree and could feel the tree's energy. I closed my eyes and prayed. I could feel the tree speak to me, telling me to lift my branches and let go. I raised my arms and felt my hands gnarl and felt the pain being pulled from me. As I entered the college so at peace, I saw Charlie. As we talked, he told me, “I give you the name, Tree Spirited Woman." A few years later I had a dream that I would write a book entitled Tree Spirited Woman; it would be a cross between the style of Siddhartha and The Prophet. I knew I had to experience more in life before I was to begin. Even though I wasn’t a writer, the voice was so powerful I never doubted that this book would be written. It was about fifteen years after the dream when I began writing the story. As with all of us, life happens and we often put our dreams on hold. Working in education for over 28 years as a teacher, school counselor and administrator, that happened. Writing Tree Spirited Woman took a number of years from its beginning to seeing it in book form. Believe in your dream and anything can and will happen. I have a lot of faith. I always believe God is guiding me, however, I’m not always sure where I’m going. I let go and I trust as I joyously travel down this path of life. Writing Tree Spirited Woman has led me to meet many wonderful women from around the country as well as having the opportunity to lead Women’s Circles, and present a variety of workshops at conferences, churches, local organizations and book festivals.
Just think how different this world could be if every human would trust and let go of pain and anger that hinder harmony and growth. What is “Living a Creative, Artful Life” all about? For me, it is reaching out beyond personally imposed boundaries and stepping into new worlds; challenging myself, experiencing new realities and environments. It means creating - in a world of relationships - various ways to relate to humankind as well as to nature and the cosmos. But, probably one of the most exciting ventures is moving out of my comfort zone and viewing problems as new possibilities! This journey has led to personal transformation many times. I live a fully creative life. Whether creating artworks on canvas, facilitating weekend painting workshops locally or internationally, renovating houses, playing with my grandchildren or working in my garden, the opportunity for transformation whispers nearby. My story starts way back in my childhood, when I was continuously drawing and creating art projects with my little sister, Marcy. At age ten I entered an art contest sponsored by a local television show. My entry was a drawing of a loaf of Langendorf white bread, and I won an appearance on the show. Off to a promising start, wouldn’t you say? In the following years until college I pursued the arts – painting, theatre, dance - but when I went off to college, I forgot that I had any interest in the arts, and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and a Master's in Counseling. Then I married and started my family. Though I was living a life of creativity through raising a family, the arts receded into the background of my life, and any dreams I had of entering the world of art were completely forgotten. Many years later, after my children were all but grown, I was standing in my kitchen when I experienced a major “A-ha!” moment. ”Self,” I said, "I want to do my art now!” Through a series of events, I ended up living in France for a while attending Art School, and I was mentored in the use of pastels by my good friend, Academy Award-Winning director Bert Salzman. Since then, I have been living a fully creative life.
What I learn daily from art is the experience of entering a new world of possibilities, which can be intimidating, and fear-inducing. But it is also an exciting and joyful journey. Fulfilling beyond my dreams. I live six months of the year above my art gallery, "Arte De Sayulita" in the charming village of Sayulita, Mexico, which I discovered serendipitously with my husband. Here I paint and facilitate painting workshops. In addition, once a year I take a group of painters on a painting journey to places that satisfy my sense of adventure. This year we traveled to a small village in the Chateau Country of France. The remainder of the year I paint and teach from my home base in lovely Mendocino County, California. “Inspires” Defines My Life by Whitney Ferre’
I love that the word INSPIRED literally means "spirit within." For me, my entire career as a Creatively Fit Coach, author, artist + speaker has been inspired - birthed through intuition, realized through small miracles, and founded in the heart. After growing up as a "wanna-be" artist, truly (!!!), I opened an art center in 1996 to offer others an environment where they could make their mark and realize their creative potential. I knew nothing about art when I opened The Creative Fitness Center in Nashville, but "knew" that I had been given a mission to empower others by accessing their creative spirit. With no formal art training and no business plan, I proceeded to create a supportive and inspiring oasis within which my clients bloomed into their true selves. My favorite times are when they share with me, "Guess what I have done!? I have been meaning to do it FOREVER!" As it turns out, true to my intuition, making art accesses a new awareness of the ART that is our LIFE and our role as the ARTIST! Making art accesses the right hemisphere of our brain that is connected to spirit, the infinite, a reality based in love, and that can manifest, or create, whatever we can imagine. It is a simple, but powerful, shift that leads to an entirely new way of being in this modern world. Inspired by the success stories and the need to empower the creative spirit in others, I began to write my first book, The Artist Within, A Guide to Becoming Creatively Fit in 1998, to be published finally in 2008. In those ten years I gave birth to three incredible children, was a regular "creativity expert" on HGTV, opened two wine bars with another inspired woman, became an "artist" in my own right, led corporate creativity workshops and community art projects, and inspired thousands of other "wanna-be" artists to create the life of their dreams. With the launch of my book in 2008, I took to the national stage, presenting at the Creative Education Foundation and the American Creativity Association conferences, the Esalen Institute, and my new ".com" audience. I lead online creativity programs and have trained and certified Creatively Fit Coaches in Africa, Denmark, Croatia, Canada, England, and the U.S. In October, 2011, I presented
at the International Creativity Conference in South Africa and traveled to remote villages with a local arts organization. In June 2011, I realized another long-standing dream when my family and I moved from Nashville to a 600+ acre ranch, a slice of heaven, in the Wallowa Valley of Northeast Oregon. Surrounded by immense natural beauty, prolific wildlife, snow-covered mountains, and sweet-scented air I feel closer to spirit than ever. Awakening... at the Refuge: The Art of Healing... loss, grief and grace by Sharon Strouse, MA, ATR
On October 11, 2001, I received a phone call in the middle of the night from the New York City police telling me that my 17-year-old daughter, Kristin Rita Strouse, had “fallen� from the roof of her college dormitory. She had ended her own life. That moment changed my life forever and set me on an unimaginable journey. In the following months, I found no comfort in traditional therapy, and no solace in spoken or written words. Shortly after the one-year anniversary of Kristin's death, I began using her abandoned art supplies to make collages from images torn out of magazines. This, along with a devoted meditation practice, was the beginning of my fall into grace. Over a seven-year period, I created one collage after another. It was soul medicine. I returned to life through them. What started out solely as a personal exploration, turned into a template for my professional work as an art therapist, teacher, facilitator, speaker and author. My career focuses on issues of loss and bereavement, where my distinctive healing approach inspires thousands, locally and nationally, at conferences such as, The Compassionate Friends (TCF), the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), the Afterlife Awareness Conference and the American Association of Suicidology and the Healing After Suicide Conference. Trauma and loss are universal and transcend all boundaries; it's a part of our human condition. Those broken by its weight find solace in my presence, where they quiet their minds and open their hearts. I am the keeper of a safe, sacred creative space. I serve as a guide by example. It doesn't matter whether I am at home in my studio in Baltimore ... at the Refuge ... with a few artists or at a conference workshop with 75 bereaved parents. I am grounded in my body, present to each moment and willing to journey with participants. I trust the healing quality of art making in an open and non-judgmental way, with no attachments to the created product. My alchemical vessel for personal growth and transformation is filled with tissue and construction paper, paint, brushes, markers, watercolors, oil pastels, magazines, fabrics and found objects as well as examples of participants' creative expressions.
Inspired artists arrive and we begin with meditation. I bear witness as they soften and relax into their process. The room is always pregnant with creative healing energy. Its silence broken only by the sound of paper. I watch when tears fall and mingle with the color, texture and shape of each personal story. I listen to breath, released deep within the belly. I understand how compelling the process of creating into one's life can be. It is not enough for a woman to know how to ride; she must know how to fall. - Mexican Proverb Silver Horse Healing Ranch in the hills of Topanga, California began from a dream I had after proclaiming to the universe “I’m ready for a horse." In my dream a horse appears in regal costume; panicked, he runs directly into my path. Face to face, he stops dead in his tracks. “Phew!" A week later this exact scenario played out in real life and this is how Silver, a pretty gray Arabian horse, and I met. After this chance encounter, Silver’s owner informed me she was no longer able to care for him and asked me if I was interested in becoming his new horse person. With no doubt in my mind, I said yes. In my imagination, I saw us galloping across mountains into blazing sunsets, but Silver had other plans in store. Unbeknownst to me, Silver held traumatic memories of being ridden. My fantasies became glaringly unrealistic after getting bucked off, falling and being trampled by Silver on one too many occasions. Clearly we needed to reconsider our relationship, as riding Silver was nerveracking and dangerous. I dropped the idea of riding. With the pressure off, Silver felt safe enough to reveal his true talents, pushing us toward an unconventional path as we explored new territories. Silver showed me how much he loved to play and dance. He taught me how horses intuitively know our thoughts and feelings. His Arabian intelligence, along with his goofy humor, blossomed and we enjoyed a different quality of time together. As a team, we were hired by an Equine Therapy Ranch to help people who were in crisis. These early experiences with Silver along with my background in the healing arts led to my current work, which combines Bert Hellinger’s Family Constellation therapy with horses. Hellinger combines ancient healing rituals and modern psychoanalytical techniques to help us heal trauma in our ancestral lineage that is consciously or unconsciously affecting our lives in the present.
Constellations are performed within an energetic container recognized as the Knowing Field. Horses, dividing their time between the spiritual and physical worlds, navigate the Field with a natural ease. In a Constellation, they assist us by providing significant information through their actions and movements. After having experienced a Horse Constellation, many people notice a change pertaining to their situation of concern, whether it be relationship, financial, health or career. Other horses have followed in Silver’s footsteps in offering their services at SHHR, located in Topanga, California. Most of these are mares rescued from the Premarin (PREgnantMAResurINe) industry. Perfected Yourself Yet? by Ann Keeler Evans, M.Div.
Like many of you, perhaps, I’ve spent much of the past 30 years trying to make myself better. A stint in investment banking, then in seminary— both offering a challenge to find, form and foster a woman’s place in a man’s world. Raising my own consciousness; helping others raise theirs. Self-help. Exploring philosophies, forming communities, watching them dissolve: hope, then disenchantment, followed by hope again, all interwoven with the joys and struggles of everyday life with family, friends, and those-who-don’t-get-it. The whole point was to make myself a better woman, a better human. It was time and energy well spent. But at what point is better good enough? And what can better mean without a purpose? Shouldn’t “better” really HAVE a purpose? The answer, like the journey, is so much larger than ourselves: better people make better communities. I was lucky. In Northern California, in the 1990s, I cultivated a group of like-minded women seeking support, growth and spiritual meaning. Today, I lead a thoughtful Unitarian congregation in rural Pennsylvania. In between - ever a practical theologian - I’ve used ritual, art, music, and laughter to call people into themselves, into relationship and into community. Then, encouraging that little extra effort to stay on track. Now I seek women ready to take the next step: to make a better world. It doesn’t matter what type of project or effort you have in mind, whether it’s large or small - only that it benefits outward, and that you are passionate about it. Want to clothe children in poorer countries? Start sewing and find others who’ll do the same. Want to improve the schools in your town? Call an action group together. Want to create support mechanisms for aging or dying gracefully? I will show you how. I was born an "edgewalker," a "paradigm pioneer" - meaning that I walk easily between the worlds of business and spirit. I surf ahead of the wave, I explore outside the box. All my life I have intuitively felt that I have a unique perspective about business that combines heart and mind - this guided me 20 years ago to follow my path, often navigating uncharted waters while being led to my passion, Transformative Business from the Heart. I delight in working with women worldwide to align their purpose in both life and work, and to take their leadership to the next level. My philosophy is that we "reinvent success from the inside out" when we "reclaim our wholeness." Integration and integrity are truly my mission and message. I was a member of the Association for Spirit and Work and a certified EDGEWALKER facilitator and coach. My educational background also reflects the integration of two strong passions of mine: I have a B.A. in Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology, and a Master's degree in Business and Organizational Development. But before I could effectively offer my idea of Transformative Business from the Heart, I had to trust that I would find - and become - the person I was born to be. My journey of discovery has involved traveling, expanding my network, reclaiming my wholeness, and letting go of the limiting beliefs that kept me from being authentic. Some of the adventures I enjoy most, I've found, are swimming with dolphins in the wild and whitewater rafting in the Grand Canyon. My parents' background made me feel comfortable about traveling: my father was an American Airlines pilot, and my mother was a travel agent. Skeptics have said, “You can’t talk about those topics to businesspeople and expect to get hired!” But I feel there is a greater risk in not speaking out. souls that has negatively affected our companies and our world in general. But this problem can be resolved. What does fabulously successful mean to you? For me, it means opening up to all of the possibilities in your life, expanding your horizons and giving fully of yourself. It is for this reason that I chose this phrase as the name of my personal and professional transformation company: Fabulously Successful. I have found that when you open up to your own awe-inspiring potential, you can’t help but give the best of who you are both to yourself and those around you. Yet how do you live to your optimum when you are not even sure how to take the first step? It is the first step that is the hardest because we get caught in the routine of our daily lives. Do you sometimes feel your life is in neutral, that you are simply coasting and everything seems a bit flat? Yet at the same time, you feel there is a spark inside you, a knowing that there is more to experience, more to live and more to give? I understand how you feel. Let me share a bit of my story to explain: On May 27th, 1997, I was on a plane headed from Miami, Florida, to Paris, France. There was so much swirling around in my head that it was hard to make sense of how I was actually feeling. A not-so-happy ending to a fairy tale marriage had left me heart-broken and in search of a new life path. In the 17 months that led up to that plane ride I had seen my world rocked like I could never have anticipated. Determined to make my life whole again after the divorce, I found a job in the booming telecommunications industry, bought a red convertible sports car, began volunteering again, and cried harder and hurt more than I ever had up to that point in my life. The true transformation came, though, when I decided to move to Paris: a new country, a new language, and a new dream. It was thrilling and yes, more than a tad scary but somehow I knew that all this was bringing me closer to the real “me.� Transformation can happen at any time in your life, as long as you are open to the wondrous opportunities brought your way. In the time since I have moved to France, I have traveled the world, met inspiring people, worked with amazing women and created a loving family life with my new husband and our three sons.
It is now my life’s work and joy to help women bring more spirit, more spark and more of themselves into their lives. My specialties include working with other expats, working moms and overworked executives. Hearing the Joy and the Laughter by Vicki Lickorish
My life’s journey has taken me down many various paths and taught me many very valuable lessons. By age 31 I had been married, divorced, and re-married (to the same man!); I had three miscarriages, an ectopic pregnancy that almost took my life; I lost quadruplets at 26 weeks after my first IVF treatment, lost one twin after the second IVF treatment, lost my hubby and had a hysterectomy…quite a journey! As you can imagine, I hit a deep low after my husband died, and I wallowed in my own self-pity. I couldn’t see a way forward for myself and my cherished son. Then a few years later I had another hard wakeup call (I know, can you believe it?). After a series of unexplained illnesses, I was bedridden for six weeks, two of which I have no recollection of whatsoever. It was love that pulled me through and turned my life around. Hearing the joy and laughter coming from outside my bedroom window as my young son celebrated his birthday, led me to find the inner strength to carry on and the courage to pull myself through and follow my own personal and deeply spiritual journey. While attending what I call, the "Great University of Life" - my own personal development journey has taken me down many various paths of study, including Psychology, Counseling, British Sign Language, Life Coaching, Self-Harm, Autism, Grief and Bereavement, Relationship Guidance, Soul Healing, Horses for Therapy, and Contemporary Shamanism, which have all helped me to deepen my knowledge, change my perspectives and live my true authentic life. I work with clients from around the globe helping them work through the layers and levels of their own life lessons from many varied perspectives. Also, I am deeply committed to coaching deaf and disabled adults. I so strongly believe that we are all equal, no matter what our age, creed, color, or abilities. Frame of Mind Coaching - Journal into a New Way of Thinking by Kid Ades
I have gone through some significant personal transitions as an adult that have dramatically changed the course of my life. I was an early bloomer, married at 20, graduated with a B.A. in psychology and a Master's degree in business by 22. I had two young children soon thereafter. I was driven, and determined to make an impact on the world. Nothing was going to stop me. I created a company called Upward Motion, where I built and developed simulation-based assessments designed to evaluate the critical skills, personality traits, and IQ of top performers. As a result of working with thousands of professionals, I was able to collect and study concrete data regarding success and failure. What I discovered is that there is only one substantial difference between top performers and other people – their degree of emotional resilience - in other words... their ability to manage life’s adversity through a strong mindset. In a dramatic and confusing way, after 15 years, I got divorced. Wanting to heal and regain my equilibrium, I turned to personal development. I went to workshops, seminars and read a ton of books. It was easy for me to absorb, internalize, and make sense of the material. I had a natural ability to apply what I learned and I discovered that in many ways I had leaned on my ex-husband to supply me with happiness, leading to a relationship that was doomed to fail. I decided that my days of being a victim were over. I was ready for my life to go a very different way. Recognizing that the single greatest difference between those who are stratospherically successful and everyone else is their THINKING, I created a coaching process called Frame of Mind Coaching, designed to provide clients with a supportive infrastructure where they could develop the skill of deliberate thought. As I experienced adversity in my own life, I found that journaling my way through the changes enabled me to move from destroyed to alive again. I also learned that journaling is the most effective and profound vehicle for substantive and lasting change, and decided to incorporate it into the Frame of Mind Coaching process. When my clients experience coach-guided journaling, they are able to SEE their thoughts and understand how their thinking affects their results.They learn about
themselves at a whole other level, allowing them to make dramatic shifts in their lives. To see it in action is absolutely mind-blowing! I now have a global network of clients, from Malaysia to South Africa, from the U.K. to North America - and I am fortunate to be an author, speaker, entrepreneur, coach, and one of Real Estate’s 50 Most Influential Women in Canada. My pathway into the world of writing and speaking was paved with my two earliest passions. The first was books. I was enchanted by the world of reading and how the stories touched and moved me. I always dreamed that I would be an author one day and inspire people through the power of words...and not just writing them, but also by speaking them passionately. This led me to my second love, which was to entertain! From a very young age, I had a flair for melodrama. Over the years, I seized every opportunity to get involved with anything to do with the stage - from drama to musicals and light opera, and from debating to comedy improvisation. Ever since I can remember, it has been my quest to live life full-out, to live a life that is both rich and exhilarating, as well as deep and balanced - hence the moniker, "The Queen of Having it All." I noticed along the way that not everyone was cultivating the kind of life that was so natural to me. In fact, people often asked what was my "secret." I naturally gravitated towards teaching the techniques I used so that others could create for themselves the life they wanted. From the moment I discovered the field of coaching it was like finding the glove that fit me. I knew immediately, whether I was coaching five or five hundred, that this was what I was here on the planet to do. This was the contribution I was here to make! Combining my absolute love of moving an audience with my passion to ignite people's lives, over the last fifteen years I have had the good fortune to speak to many groups, such as Women in Management, Total Woman, and California Women Business Owners, as well as service organizations, like Rotary Club and Kiwanis. Remembering the Applause - Finding Your Purpose by Allison Blankenship
My life’s calling was revealed to me at six years old – of course, I had no idea at the time. It was my first ballet recital…I remember being onstage with the bright lights and hearing the audience, even though I couldn’t see them. Mostly I remember the applause – it was magical and filled me with joy to my innermost being. It wasn’t until almost 30 years later that the memory was finally anchored into present day. No, I didn’t become a professional dancer despite being totally addicted to Zumba. At 36, I started my own business – not out of desire, but simply a need to help support my family. By this point, I’d been downsized and laid off twice, overcome Stage IV cancer, qualified for food stamps, and married into a blended family to become a part-time parent to two young children. Through a series of self-crafted exercises, those memories of being onstage led to developing a speaking and professional development company that’s been successful for 15 years. Prospective clients always ask why my presentations or programs are so loved by diverse audiences. Perhaps it’s my background of turning unexpected upheaval into success; maybe it’s my “awardwinning” communication skills that earned me Florida Speaker of the Year from a group of my peers. Most people like my high-energy outlook and results-driven tools and techniques. Honestly, I think it’s something very simple – empowering people is my gift. And empowering women is my passion. Even as the lone female executive for a five-star hotel company, I mentored aspiring young women leaders. Eventually I toured with a national seminar company as a keynote speaker for a Women’s Leadership Conference, inspiring thousands of women to follow their dreams. And as life so poetically does, empowering others led to my selfempowerment…I met a kindred spirit and before I knew it, we wrote and produced a one-act show entitled Life Divas ® -- a Woman’s Journey chronicling the roller coaster ride of women’s life stages and roles. Once again, I was back on stage, only this time with a powerful, inspiring message. Along the way, I co-authored three books on leadership, productivity and communications, plus several audio programs. Then my Life Diva® sister, Bonnie Michaels, approached me to write a book about the accelerating rate of change in the world and people’s struggles to adapt quickly and thrive. This book would take a holistic approach and give readers tools to redefine happiness while creating

A Leap into the Unknown - Led to A Journey of Healing by Carolyn CJ Jones
My life has been a kaleidoscope of colors. I became an accomplished violinist, woodworker, and renovator. Despite my accomplishments, I felt awful about myself. It wasn’t until I took a leap into the unknown and dealt with healing emotional pain that I was able to open my heart and move into my current roles - author, photographer, publisher, and speaker. It is not surprising that I gravitated to these roles. After all, I began writing in diaries at a young age, had a camera around my neck since I was ten, and had performed in front of an audience in my high school musical. I even became a nurse in order to heal others. Over and over, I re-invented myself, overcoming the effects of being raised in an abusive environment. But the major change in my life occurred when I decided to become sober. You see, in my early 20s, I discovered that alcohol and drugs numbed my feelings of worthlessness and deep despair. My drinking and drugging worsened during my 20 year marriage. Finally beaten down to an emotional low, I left my marriage to “find myself” and also to get sober. I decided to go on a road trip. Before I left the San Francisco Bay Area where I was living at the time, I went to say goodbye to my ex-husband, who was still living on the sailboat we had called home while together. As I sat in the cockpit, looking at the hills across the water, I decided to visit a neighborhood I had never seen before. There I discovered the most lovely gates, which I vowed to photograph if ever I returned. Three years later, now a sober woman, I returned and started photographing them; I couldn’t stop. After several weeks, I realized that the gates represented my heart, closed from life’s pains. By that time, I had accumulated dozens of photographs. Meanwhile, I was engaged in a practice of daily journaling. In November 2004, I wrote words that gave voice to an image I had just titled Webs of Fear. This prompted me to search all my journals for other words that described the photos. Amazingly, I found phrases that fit 25 gates. I realized that what I now had was a book.
Six years later, I published Opening the Gates of the Heart: A Journey of Healing, the story of how I was led to heal my emotional pain. I’m delighted that the book has won several national awards for photography, spirituality, and inspiration. As an author, it naturally followed that I would become a speaker to present the ideas in my book. I have spoken at countless libraries and book stores across the country, and on radio and TV shows. Currently, I speak to a variety of audiences about the opening of my heart. My message is one of hope and inspiration that encourages self-responsibility and action. Our journeys converged when Trinity led Mara through a transformative chakra clearing process. Your Life Purpose is in Your Hands by Pamelah Landers
Walking across my high school campus at age 16, I had an Aha! Moment. I "just knew" my life would be about working with people. I just didn't know in what way. It would take 26 years for me to find out! During that time, I took workshops and classes, therapy and personal exploration to "find my purpose." But it wasn’t until I learned about the system of Hand Analysis in 1991 that I had a succinct and specific language for it, a really clear vision. What I learned in my Hand Analysis Life Purpose Blueprint session is that my fingerprints actually ARE all about "working with people." Even though I knew that in high school, I didn’t know the WHY. My life purpose turns out to be “sharing my spiritual wisdom with the public through creativity and leadership with love.” The next day after learning the basics of Hand Analysis, I looked at hands every day. I couldn’t get enough. I loved deciphering the map. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, Hand Analysis is a science-based system of using your hand's map to determine your life purpose. It’s the fingerprints that identify your life purpose and life lesson - and those are formed 16 weeks after conception! The rest of your hand explains your approach to everything in your life: what matters about work, personal relationships, favorite hobbies, how you experience events, and more. The greatest gift my clients tell me is that they feel clarity about direction and relief that they are actually on track - at some level for expressing their life purpose. Often they say they feel permission to be who they really are designed to be, feeling "seen" - maybe for the first time ever in their lives. As my career progressed, in 2000, I traveled monthly to Houston/ Austin from the San Francisco Bay Area to teach eager students how to read hands. I LOVED how I felt when I was teaching. Helping people learn about themselves through their hands was a fantastic experience. Claiming my passion as a teacher made a huge difference to me. It has become a major focus of how I express my life purpose and engage in deep connection with others.
One of my students, Jenny, told me after a series of three classes, “The information from you is the best and most accurate sense of myself that I have gotten from another. As the saying goes, life has come full circle, and it most definitely has for me, as I am now living my life exactly as it was intended to be! I was a communications/journalism major in college and had set my sights on broadcasting, reporting or writing for a local station or newspaper here in Southern California; however, those goals were set aside as life had a different path for me. I wouldn’t change a thing, as I was blessed to have met a wonderful man with whom I have shared 32 years of marriage, raised three children, worked as a legal assistant for 20 years, however, I knew there was another calling waiting in the wings for me. The opportunity to step into the radio industry came my way in April 2010, when I was asked to be a guest on an Internet radio show. It was after that guest appearance when I spoke about my interest in health, that I knew, without a doubt, that I would host my own show. Therein began my new career as I created Feel Free in the O.C. on BlogTalkRadio in May 2010 and 200 shows later, I am now the radio show host on the blossoming The Nancy Ferrari Show on KNOC Radio, airing live on 1680 on the right side of the AM dial in Orange County, California. I share my story to inspire others to follow their true heart’s desire and that it’s never too late in life to rekindle those passions within. I truly am living my best life RIGHT NOW. My life is enriched with each and every interview as I have had the pleasure of connecting with an amazing array of expert guests, ranging from authors, medical practitioners, psychologists, inspirational speakers, to women in baseball and seemingly everyone in between. I have found that life is what you make it, and as my messages are that of positivity and what’s right in the world, I am continually rewarded by the abundance of guests I've shared with my listeners. My personal growth has been exponential as I learned more about the radio industry, and the skills of effective interviewing. One of the first lessons was the skill of listening. In March 2011, I was looking to do brief radio-based "mini-commercials" for the law firm I own in Atlanta, Georgia, The Oaks Firm. The owner of a budding Internet radio station welcomed me onto his afternoon show for a 20-minute interview about the foreclosure and housing crisis and then asked me to stay on-air for the rest of the fourhour time slot because he and his listeners were loving it. By having the good fortune to build a rapport with him, one month later he offered me my own morning radio show and my response was, “Sure, why not?” I tried to play it cool as a cucumber when inside I knew this was a huge deal. Not only was I thrilled to be hosting my very own Internet radio show, I was also a little nervous. After all, who would want to listen to me talk for two hours or even one-and-a-half with music breaks? What would I talk about? What would my voice sound like on-air? And perhaps the most important question of all, would people like me (remember Sally Fields at The Oscars?)? Those were just a sampling of the questions running through my head. At first the show was entitled AMO (Attorney Misty Oaks) in the Morning and was intended to have a legal slant to every story. It took me about two months to realize that being an attorney is what I do, not who I am. I was so much more than just an attorney, and while legal topics are interesting, I was interested in expressing so much more. I am an attorney, an entrepreneur, a young African-American female, a writer, a speaker, and an avid student of metaphysics and spirituality. I am proud to say that the Internet radio station that took a chance on me is called Sensation Station Network and is now the hottest Internet hip-hop and R&B station in all of Atlanta. I am also proud to announce that as of June 1, 2011, the name of my morning show was changed to The Misty Oaks Experience, because it’s not just a radio show, it’s an experience. On The Misty Oaks Experience, we speak truth to power and powerful truth every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST. The show is a combination of everything I am, all the roles I play and all the hats I wear. The show is heard now by roughly 60,000 daily listeners and is currently being shopped for national syndication.

My path to becoming a health advocate and the host of my own Internet TV show about food, health and healing was an unexpected twist of fate. To fill you in on my story, I am married to a successful entertainment company executive. As a young adult growing up in California, I joined a family passion and worked in the real estate industry for 25 years. But as my own family grew to include seven children, my focus shifted. In the late 1990s, when our sixth child CJ was diagnosed with a triplethreat group of conditions - autism, colitis, and Crohn's disease - I became a woman on a mission. After interviewing the top doctors and leading experts in both traditional and alternative (even controversial) medicine, in an attempt to find ways to make CJ and my whole family healthier, I discovered that CJ was not digesting the foods he was eating, and was in fact allergic to many foods. I went on a 13-year search for ways to heal my son CJ from autism, and ultimately, I was successful. But I wanted to share my experiences and discoveries about truly healthy living with thousands, possibly millions, of people worldwide. I thought, what better way to convey what I've learned, and be able to interview fascinating guests, than to have my own Internet TV show about health and healing? The result was that in September 2010, I hosted my first show on www.RealFoodRealLife.tv, and we've been running ever since, to very positive feedback. My series is a combination of education and entertainment ("edutainment") designed for the whole family, and is available to viewers on-demand, 24/7. The objective of my show is to make all my hard-learned lessons about healthy living easy for my viewers to access, so they can take realistic steps, and also shorten their learning curve. In my show segments, I interview talented, bright people who are experts on a particular show's topic. For example, one of my guests was Lawrence Gust, the top environmental engineer in the U.S., discussing how to create a healthy home environment. All the shows are shot at my house, which is completely set up for filming and production. Because I believe that most of my topics originate within people's homes and relate to their families, I feel that
filming in a home setting is the most appropriate. I'm fortunate to live in Los Angeles, which is the hub of production talent, so we use professional videographers and editors to produce my shows. I plan the shows about 30-60 days ahead of filming. It's typically a 60-day cycle to identify and book the best guests, to develop scripts and a list of camera shots, to do set preparation, and so forth. I can’t remember when books were not part of my life. It probably began with the children’s stories my mother read to me. One glorious day, my father brought home a book for me to read by myself. It was a first-grade reading primer and I can’t imagine where he got it, but I still have the well-worn hardcover on my bookshelf! From that day on I was addicted to reading, and I have no intention of trying to break the habit. Since graduating from college, my career has been rooted in some area related to books and communication: I’ve held positions in book publishing, magazine publishing, marketing and public relations as an editor, writer, author, publisher, marketing director, publicity agent, consultant and author advocate. You may know me as Shelley Lieber, The Wordy Woman, author and publishing consultant. In that persona I wrote 4Ps to Publishing Success and Publishing Made Easy & Profitable; created the VIP Authors writers community; and founded Visual Impressions Publishing, a publishing vehicle for independent authors. But there’s another protagonist in this story. About ten years ago I was transitioning from life as a wife, writer and mother to single, writing mother, headed toward being an empty nester in a second marriage and new career. A few years later, I was writing Sex in the Suburbs, a nonfiction book about my midlife experiences re-entering the dating world when the story abruptly morphed into fiction. You’ve probably heard authors talk about characters having lives and minds of their own. That’s exactly what happened to me. I had interviewed dozens of women for dating and relationship stories to use in Sex in the Suburbs. One day as I struggled with the structure and organization of the book, the interviews suddenly merged into the life stories of two characters, Leah Gold and Roxanne Stein: two friends with contrasting personalities and a shared propensity for choosing Mr. Wrong. Their story became The Prince Charming Hoax, my debut novel. I use my pen name, Elyse Grant, for fiction because truly the inspiration for storytelling comes from a source inside myself that is not a person I’ve yet shown the world. The Prince Charming Hoax, a sizzling hot story of self-growth and empowerment, was almost seven years in the making. While in the final editing stage and preparing for the release of the ebook, it
occurred to me that I was also gearing up for my personal “release” as the author of erotic fiction. Contemplating these momentous events, I was struck by the realization that Shelley Lieber and Elyse Grant are the real-life models for Leah Gold and Roxanne Stein. Shelley and Leah are the “good girls,” smart, successful, with nurturing mom-type personalities. Roxie and Elyse are the “naughty girls,” sharp, ambitious with a penchant for bending the rules and having fun. The truth is that every woman has these two personalities within. Mine are just living it out publicly! I hope you enjoy The Prince Charming Hoax. FYI: This is Leah’s book, with Roxie as co-star. But in the second novel of the e-trilogy, Roxie gets the lead role. Living Serendipitously...Keeping the Wonder Alive by Madeleine Kay
I love the word serendipity – I love the way it sounds, I love what it means . . . and I love how it can transform your life and take the “if” out of any equation and replace it with “when.” That’s what living serendipitously has done for me and can do for you too . . . whatever you want – happiness, success, relationships, money. I had been living serendipitously pretty much my whole adult life, naively believing that everyone else was living from that same spirit. So this is what it feels like to have a nervous breakdown!” Feeling a sense of awe, gratitude … and even a little amusement, I realized that my nervous breakdown had become just another experience for me . . . something new, unknown and wonderful to experience. That experience, losing everything temporarily and all that made me feel special and unique, gave me the opportunity to understand others better and to understand who I was and what I had to offer – the gift of serendipity – not as some vague metaphysical concept, not as a naïve way of living with no personal awareness . . . but rather, as a practical, real-life solution and way of responding to life. Six months later, I wrote Living Serendipitously . . . keeping the wonder alive. I wrote it long-hand . . . in 21 days . . . and it was published almost exactly as I wrote it! Since then I've written several books.

Armed with a pocketful of Band-aids and a heart full of compassion, as a little girl of five, I set foot on my path to healing and changing the world. Even then I had a passion for wellness. I looked for ways to make people better: a massage for an achy muscle, that Band-aid for a wound and always a listening ear. Everyone knew I was destined to be a nurse - except me. I wanted to be a journalist, to travel and discover the world. But in college I met my future sister-in-law, Marva, a nurse working in Vietnam, and suddenly it became clear: I would explore and heal. So off to nursing school, then the Malaysian jungle working with the Aborigines, then India and Bangladesh working with WHO in Smallpox. Next stop: I decided to become a Nurse Practitioner and Health Educator so I could practice more independently and holistically. I am a Spirited Woman. Strong, vibrant, and radiantly healthy. One of the bright and shiny types. But that’s not always been the case. There was a time when my light had grown so dim that I was disconnected from my body and spirit and felt like an empty shell of a person. Growing up, I suffered from severe acne, frequent infections, allergies, PMS, mood swings and digestive issues. In my early 20s I began to experience fatigue, anxiety and depressions so severe I was not able to think clearly or find enough energy to get up, get dressed and function each day. It was like living in a fog and trying to move through molasses. At one point I was taking a combination of six medications just to “manage my mood” – including one that caused me to gain 30 pounds in one month! That was before being introduced to holistic nutrition and spiritual healing. Growing up, all I knew was “conventional medicine,” processed foods and synthetic medications that only treated the symptoms of my dis-ease and threw my highly sensitive body and nervous system even more out of balance. When I was sick, my doctors never asked me what I was eating. They never asked about my sleep, self-care, exercise or stress levels. It was only after I discovered and began embracing the principles of healthy living that I was able to make the connection of diet and lifestyle to my mood and energy levels. Through a self-guided healing journey that included cleansing, detoxification, healthy eating, yoga, massage, bodywork, and energetic healing, I was able to completely heal and get myself off all medications. Shortly after, I realized my mission is to serve as a guide to inspire and teach others how to heal naturally and live healthy lives. That’s when I decided to change careers in order to create a life that was in alignment with my life’s purpose and shifted from recruiting scientists for the pharmaceutical industry to becoming a certified holistic health coach and spiritual healer.

A NATURAL-BORN INTUITIVE by Cheryl Wagner
I've always had a sense of "knowing" things, even when I was a very little girl. I was forever asking, "Who am I? What's going on here? Who are we?" to the priests and nuns at my Catholic school. But it's only within the past few years that I've gotten confirmation that I am indeed a natural intuitive. About 11 years ago, I had an awakening -- although some might call it a nervous breakdown. So many things were happening at once: my kids were graduating from high school, I was starting menopause, my husband and I were not getting along, and in the middle of all this, we found out that my mother had terminal ovarian cancer. Her illness was a sign for me that I should work with people who are dying - and eventually, I was in fact powerfully drawn to becoming a hospice volunteer. One night in the middle of all the chaos going on in my life then, I had a vivid dream, which ended with an overwhelming feeling of blissful love. I interpreted this dream as a gift from God, encouraging me to heal myself. I started recovering from the breakdown by, among other things, reading books on meditation, and then deeply meditating about what I wanted to do in my life. I definitely could feel Spirit working through me. I decided to study with a Reiki master for a year, because Reiki is one of my passions. Since then, wonderful and magical things have happened. I am now a certified master Reiki practitioner; in my sessions with clients, I use essential oils, color, crystals, tuning forks, and do reflexology to help reduce stress and restore energy. In my Reiki practice, I've worked with dying people, babies, even animals! Another facet to my healing work is that I am a spiritual counselor. The modality I use is the reading of oracle or angel cards. I have the ability to go deep and listen well. I know that I am a clear and perfect channel for counseling people through Spirit. Actually, people heal themselves; they know when it's time, when they're ready. I believe that I am an instrument of God's love to help people learn how to do the necessary work to heal. I'm also very excited about the healing jewelry that I've been creating. I put information about the esoteric meaning of the semi-precious stones, charms, and color with every beaded bracelet, and also provide an individualized written reading. “Wells Bring Hope” Helps Women and Young Girls Survive by Barbara Goldberg
Blessed to have lots of awesome women in my life, in the early ‘90s I created a way to bring them all together by having monthly “salons” in my home - dinner, a guest speaker and serious Q&As. I’ve always said that when women come together they create “magic,” forming friendships and partnerships, connections and support systems with great fluidity. Nineteen years later, with over 800 women on our mailing list, the Salon Forum is still going strong. But it was in 2008 that a Salon Forum evening literally changed my life - presenting the greatest challenge and opportunity to impact the lives of women and girls in a way I’d never imagined. Former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti spoke about the dire need for safe water in West Africa, about which we knew nothing. Here’s what grabbed us: water is a women’s issue. In the developing world, it is the women, and girls as young as eight, who are responsible for getting water. In places like West Africa, it means walking an average of 4-6 miles every day to find water, water that often causes death and disease. Hearing this, I said to myself and others in attendance that night, “We have to do something.” And so with the support of a group of extraordinary women, I founded “Wells Bring Hope,” a non-profit working in Niger, West Africa, the poorest country in the world at the time. We drill deep water wells going 250-300 feet into the ground to reach the artesian water table, providing a source of clean, safe water to entire villages, 67 to date. Our vision? Saving lives with safe water. When you provide safe water to a village, lives change instantly and dramatically for everyone, with infant mortality dropping by as much as 65 percent. In Niger, one out of four children never reaches their fifth birthday. With much of their time taken up with fetching water, women are so overburdened that they do not have time to properly care for their children or handle their basic chores. They work non-stop and are
continually stressed, exhausted, and age before their time. The tragedy is that these women know their lives could be better if they had a well in their village. No longer having to walk miles to get water, 50 percent of their time is freed up. As part of what we do, women are given access to microfinancing loans so they can start small businesses and contribute to the economic welfare of their families. Girls, no longer needed to help their mothers walk to get water, can now go to school, often for the first time in the history of their village. When visiting Niger in 2009, I met many of these beautiful, resilient women. I talked to one who had lost 11 out of her 12 children. Unimaginable. The Greater Contribution by Karon Wright
I have always believed that ideas can and do change the world. One of those small, nagging ideas gave a whole new direction to my life and was the start of a nonprofit organization: The Greater Contribution. In 2006, during a meeting of The Executive Women’s Retreat, I shared that I had been thinking about doing something bigger, more meaningful with my life. I had a strong Executive Coaching practice and felt fortunate to have been born in America, where a lot of opportunities were available to me, but I knew that was not the case for so many women in the world. After reading The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs, in which he describes how 20,000 people a day die of preventable causes related to poverty (most of them children under the age of five), I knew that I had to do something to help fight poverty. I was fortunate to have three other women join me. After a lot of soul searching and research, we discovered microfinance as a way for us to make a "greater contribution". Almost six years later, we have given micro loans to over 4,200 women and helped more than 20,000 people altogether. A micro loan - a small loan of $50 to $250 - given to a desperately poor woman enables her to start a small business and literally transforms her life and that of her family. The Greater Contribution works in East Africa with women who are earning an average of $37/month when they enter our program and an average of $150/month when they leave 24 months later - a 400% increase. From the beginning, I was committed to not just giving these women a loan, but really helping them work their way out of poverty. Also, we provide them with business training and one-onone mentoring every month. How does this increased income change their lives? When I was last in Africa, I asked women that question. They said, “I don’t have to wait until Christmas or Easter to buy meat for my family!” Also, virtually no one was wearing glasses (except me!). They can’t afford the most basic necessities, like meat, so items such as glasses are a luxury beyond their means.
However, with the development of a small business and a sustainable income, the women can, and do, work their way out of poverty. They increase the nutrition of their family’s meals, they pay the fees to send their children to school to break the awful cycle of poverty, they provide medical care when needed, and much more. The success of these women reaches beyond just their families. Studies show that women are twice as likely as men to re-invest their profits in their families and communities. This is true in Buyobo, Uganda, where our program is headquartered. In two years, the women have saved enough to replace the one crumbling schoolroom with three new classrooms! Our goal for our 2013 Directory is to EXPAND IT. Presently, we have 15 categories and over 100 listings - we'd like to offer more. Have more women involved from more countries, and more states. Expand our reach and have an abundance of new profiles and listings.
What makes this Directory special? It is a by-invitation-by-referral-only Directory. There is no publication ANYWHERE (online or off) where women from around the world have come together like this.
